Reviews of Grohmann Museum
Gretchen Schwartz
This is a gem in the middle of Milwaukee! A museum with art dedicated to work and industry may not be typical, but it is truly breathtaking! The tour will start on the roof where you step into the most beautiful rooftop green area filled with grass, amazing flowers, walkways and huge statues positioned around the perimeter of the roof which can be seen from the street below looking upward. The collection ranges from current paintings to some going back the the mid-1500s. Don't forget to look upto the ceiling and down to the main entry floor, as art surrounds you. I highly, highly recommend this museum!
McKenna Dietze
Such a fun museum! Very noticeably an art museum with the statues on the top, it was filled with a lot of work on occupation and "older" styles. It was great for a class trip and the roof garden and dome on top is beautiful!
Hans Johnson
What a concept- a museum built around a common theme - work. They suggested that we go to the roof and work our way down so we did. Don’t forget to pick in the office on the top floor to see some stained glass. No problem parking on the street from in front.
Ken Wolf
My favorite museum for Art in Milwaukee. See paintings and sculptures from the 16th through 20th centuries for an incredibly low admission price. Also has a beautiful rooftop with massive sculptures of people at work.
Elizabeth Cushing
Wow!! What a kid-friendly find!! We are vacationing with babies and it’s difficult to find places that they can walk and are child safe and this fit the ticket perfectly. The staff were extremely helpful and even stored our double stroller behind the counter (side-by-side double-wide strollers will not fit well here) while we enjoyed all the exhibits. The rooftop garden was absolutely gorgeous with a view. The paintings were incredible to see people at work throughout the ages. Men, women, and children in every occupation. There is a space in the basement to study or eat which was nice. Clean restrooms on every floor. At the end, the manager carried our stroller outside for us because the kids were asleep. I can’t recommend this place enough!!
patricia schlagel
Awesome artistic interpretation of work. Appreciated the curation and so many field of work over the ages for consideration. So cool, actual classrooms are on the floors. The rooftop area is very captivating! The complimentary book is very helpful in understanding the museum's story.
Therese Davis
Roof top sculpture garden has huge bronze sculptures that are really a unique experience.
Tom Ruopp
Wonderfully curated Art Museum that we saw during Doors Open Milwaukee.
I didn't think I would be a fan of art but it was really nice to walk through and see the various depictions of work throughout the ages.
The rooptop is gorgeous as well
Kenneth D
This is truly a great little Museum, one wonderful hidden gem in Milwaukee
Cathy Peterson
Wonderful art. Start on the roof with a lively garden and interesting sculptures and then walk down the curving stairs. The quality of the art is phenomenal and makes you understand so much of life hundreds of years ago.
Janet Danielsen
Was awesome place to visit with our Ela township +55 plus day trip
Tanya Fuhrman
Not only beautiful paintings, sculptures, but an education on the history of Milwaukee, industry, agriculture, invention, men (& women) at work. A real gem of Milw. Everyone needs to come to their Lost Arts weekend don't miss it!, and that's all I'll say about that. I hope this peeks your interest of th Grohmann Museum. It's awesome. And if you come on Thursdays you may even catch a glimpse of artists studying these masterpieces. They're friendly, will talk to you & answer your questions. The people who keep this place going are great too.
Brianna Wallace
Had a great time today at the museum. I loved how each floor was dedicated to a different type of “theme” and there were a lot more paintings than I would have thought. Also very affordable!
Melanie Lemley
This is a hidden gem in MKE. Don't miss the rooftop sculpture garden. Should be appreciated over a couple of days to avoid saturation.
Gail Jones
Wonderful gem! Very reasonably priced. Don't miss the rooftop sculptures & stained glass.
deb calvey
what a lovely surprise. stopped here earlier this week while touring MKE. gorgeous building, beautiful art and stunning rooftop views. can’t wait to return in the spring.
Dawn Zeleny
Loved this museum . Excellent price and free parking. We were directed to start on roof top and proceed to next level down. Great historical experience of all types of workers.
Bill Brown
Wonderful museum with surprising collection of paintings and sculptures. Explanatory plaques were interesting and educational. Roof top sculpture garden looks like a nice place to visit when warmer.
Tatyana
I went here a few weeks ago, but I wanted to review this place because I had such a fun time, and everything was phenomenal. I was passing by Milwaukee on my way to Niagara Falls, when my family decided to spend the day here. I am so happy that we did, because we visited this museum and it was astounding! The sculptures and paintings (We saw the men at work exhibit) were beautiful, and we got a nice book with information about art for free! The outdoor balcony area was great, too!
Ken W.
Fascinating museum, documents various types of work and professions. Even has a Norman Rockwell! Lovely rooftop sculpture garden. Grand staircase with ceiling painting not to be missed.
Peggy Pierotti
Love Doors Open Milwaukee. Fun and such a great eye opener. Easy to spend 2 days all day.
Christianne Varela
Mooved to mke 4 years ago... How did I not know about this gem? Must see!
Anjali R
Loved the art work. I am not an art enthusiast still I was able to enjoy it completely....
Love to visit again
Mark Mueller
Extraordinary art museum. United by the theme of work, the collection has a surprising number of 17th century paintings, including several by Breugel the Younger, wonderful European 18th and 19th century paintings with light effects of forges and glass-blowing as well as exterior natural light. They have hundreds of bronzes, many of shirtless, barefoot, muscular men engaged in work activities. The collection is simultaneously a review of the development of work technology as well as a history northern European art.
Peter Maloney
Outstanding collection of oil paintings featuring labor workers in action in a variety of scenes such as metal foundry, railroad, building construction, agriculture, and glass blowing. The rooftop garden has amazing views of downtown and the bronze statues are larger than life. The best part was seeing Mr. Grohmann walk in as we were leaving.
Oli Pierce
very beautiful, if you love art, you definitely need to walk through.
Betsy Murphy
Great museum dedicated to art of the subject of workers. From steelworkers to astronauts, the subject of every painting and sculpture is work. The rooftop sculpture garden and the mosaic floor at the entrance are particularly cool. An unusual art museum well worth the visit.
Paul Gifford
Amazing museum on work and what men and women have been able to do from fine Belgium lace to large steel skyscrapers. Love the paintings, photos,, art pieces, mosaics, sculptures and stained glass windows.
Karen Mann
Excellent collection of art that depicts (mostly) men at work over the past few centuries. Many of the pieces were donated by Mr. Grohmann, and it's largely based on works created by German artists. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Milwaukee!
Bob Burke
Amazing 5 floor collection of detailed art that you can really spend time pouring over covering a wide swath of different jobs shown in historical perspective. Also roof level outdoor garden of large statues that are fun to wander around in.
Wendy “Sis” Winkler
Loved the Lost Art exhibit. It was awesome? I ran out of time so I didn't see everything. I'll be back.
I did not know there was a senior discount until I heard it offered to the couple behind me. Too late for me!
Angelo Fresco
Multitude of great paintings and sculptures. I like the very few but interesting videos. Should have more.
Bekka Nassivera
Very interesting to see and learn from the Wonderful statues and paintings.
Will Cappon
Interesting art museum with a focus on workers. MSOE affiliated.
L B
I was part of a tour arranged by the University of Wisconsin Extension, so I'm sure we got to see areas not seen by the public. Our docent was delightful, an art teacher or professor from MATC, and told wonderful stories not only about the paintings, genre, their contents, organization within the museum, and acquistion, but also gave us insight into the collector, Dr. Grohmann.
Lisa Mowery
Had some extra time to walk around town. Never been to this museum, it is very reasonably priced. I think it was $4/adult. There are 3? Floors with rooftop sculptures that center around the working industry. Worth a visit.
Calli Spheeris
Stunning. We brought our middle school students here a couple years ago and then I brought my family. It is not only about ART, but HISTORY.
August Liu
Really nice museum!
Terry Stoerzinger
Great collection of "people at work" art. Mostly paintings, but also a number of cast bronze statues. Roof top garden has life size and larger bronzes. Don't miss the stained glass images on the roof top level. Allow at least an hour.
Alan Arenz
Awesome museum of art related to manufacturing and industry. Did a lost arts here with family business of chair caning. Visits are a must if you like iron working paintings.
Bob Coletti
The Grohman is a very good museum filled with artwork relating to the toiling and ingenuity of mankind. The museum tour is very reasonably priced. Moreover the Grohman is more than just a museum. It is a special event venue as well. The garden roof deck is a very special setting and can host parties up to 100 individuals. Check out the Grohman sometime. You'll be glad you did!
Kelly Mohan
Not your traditional museum, but better, I think. I spent about 3 hours here, starting at the outdoor rooftop garden and working my way down. Great displays of the sculptures and paintings along with a few video presentations that were quite interesting.
Just Revues
What a nice little gem! I was not expecting the nice art that was hanging on the walls. They are not only visually pleasing but have a strong history. Building is great as well. Recommend visiting the top. Parking can lack but hardly packed unless an opening night or event. Nice staff.
Genevieve Hebeka
What a small but incredibly interesting and packed museum. Very very impressive. Be sure to go to the roof to see the gigantic sculptures. Just amazing. You won't regret it.
John Guld
Well done museum combing art and work/industrial history. Helped that I am a fan of industrial art. My 19yr daughter not so much, but she can write her own review :)
Ted Hertel
What a terrific museum. Great paintings of people at work (an appropriate topic for Wisconsin!). The special exhibit of railroad photos was outstanding. And don't forget to go to the roof and see the sculpture garden with its great view of downtown.
Tim Bast
What a great museum tour. This could be called the working man's hall of fame. Art work and depictions going back to the Tower of Babel right up the modern industrial era. Anyone who has an interest in history and work should spend a couple hours here.
David Nestingen
A secret Milwaukee treasure on the MSOE campus. The art of work begins with an elevator ride to the very cool rooftop garden, complete with large bronze statues. The large collection of mainly European oil paintings in the galleries is a charming reminder of all the ways people have snd still do earn a living.
Jacquie C
Great art if you like the theme for the museum. The outside garden at the top of the building with sculptures is nice.
Mary Phelps
Nice collection, affordable and not overwhelming in size. You can see it all in 1-2 hours. Great rooftop sculpture garden with nice views of the city. Worth the trip!
JoAnna Minneci (ChefJoAnna)
The entry fee was only $5 and this was absolutely fantastic. we spent so much time on the top two floors we had to leave and get lunch then come back and see the rest of the museum. Really incredible art of all styles.
Wilson Wright
Very relatable fine art of the industrial age. Sculpture and paintings in a contemplative setting. Some explanatory video and aural explanations. Very well done!
Ben Nelson
Spent an hour or so wandering the museum with a friend. Good location, only 5 admission and 3 floors of works. The art works are all around a certain kind of an industrial nature but good.
It's a reasonably small space but an ideal way to spend a sunday afternoon
Nilay Sheth
Lots of art to look at for a low price. There are also some videos and reading materials. There's a book as well that describes things in more detail.
Bruce Heilbrun
Loved it, especially the roof top garden!
Benjamin Baldwin
The Grohmann museum is a fantastic display of artwork depicting the working people of society worldwide throughout history. it is a beautiful representation of the people who built this world into what it is today. QR scan codes and video screens that go along with different artwork motifs create an interesting and immersing experience.
Old Mke
I finally got around to visiting this museum after thinking about it for many years.
Wow! I wish I would've went sooner.
What a beautiful and important collection on the history of work.
Try to go on a decent weather day and you'll be able to enjoy the roof top patio as well.
I'll be back as they rotate certain collections over time.
Sara Krentz
There's a free parking lot around the side, just have to tell the museum it's your car. Entrance ticket prices seem very reasonable. Not crowded at all in the morning.
Carl Gilmore
Wonderful museum as part of the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Collection of paintings is built around the theme of work, occupations and industry from agriculture in middle ages through the industrial revolution in 19th and 20th century. Totally interesting and extremely well curated and organized by time frame and occupation. A must see if you visit Milwaukee.
Karl K
Undiscovered gem for art lovers. Excellent collection of paintings depicting man's evolution in industrial capabilities. I would rather spend time here than the public museum.
Iowa Reviewers
I was pleasantly surprised to learn of this museum while on a brief trip to Milwaukee. Its theme is different than that of most museums or galleries, but don't allow that to dissuade you; there is some excellent art here, and the sculpture garden on the rooftop is very good. There are permanent collections and temporary exhibits; I found both to be enjoyable. If you enjoy art, be sure to visit when in the area.
Peter Angelos
Wonderful Old World Masters and period US pieces. Wonderful presented.
Rebecca Hamersly
The Grohmann Museum is a wonderful museum with paintings and sculptures that pay tribute to the people and professions that helped to make and shape this world of ours.
History comes to life!
Brian Kemp
Absolutely fantastic. Massive collection. Unique paintings and sculptures. A must see in MKE
Teresa Arenz
Paintings here are so wonderful. They also have great special events. Recently we attended their Lost Arts Show. Fantastic!
Cornelia Beilke
This is an amazing collection of paintings and scultures, documenting the history of trades and work. It is housed in a beautiful building with a roof garden overlooking the city. It is a must see. I take all my visitors there!
Pastor Adam Westrich
This was a great place to visit. Lots of art relating to the topic of work. Beautiful.
S. Ruben
Nice museum, reasonable admission fee, lots to see about workers...paintings and sculptures.
Stephen Gaddis
Awesome place, even better price.
5 bucks and I got to see LOTS of sculptures and paintings. I got a quick rundown of the best way to explorer, was given a small book about it, and sent on my way. I started at the rooftop where the weather was nice and grass was green. Some great sculptures up there to see.
Working my way down floor by floor, the museum is divided by theme. I enjoyed most of the pieces and got some really good pictures as well. I was alone, so I took my time and looked at each piece.
If I am ever back in the area, I will definitely go back here and will be sure to bring anyone else who wants the experience too.
Christian Smith
A hidden gem of a museum. Spent an afternoon here viewing the artwork. It's well worth a visit.
Aaron Lee
Staff is nice, hours can be kind of odd, and the roof garden is rarely open, but if it is, it's a must see. The paintings are gorgeous, unfortunately some of the best ones are on display around campus, not in the museum. The temporary exhibits tend to be awesome as well.
David Sheldon
Well maintained, interesting art work depicting working people throughout time. Mostly european artists, very good way to spend a few hours.
Seth LiaBraaten
Pretty good art and great value for the price. They rotate exhibits frequently enough
Dale Smaglik
Great place to visit. The sculptures and pictures of how Milwaukee was built are spectacular.
Claire Jones
Surprisingly good. Easy parking. Low ticket price. And a wealth of industrial art from the 1600s forward.
Ian Dale
A lovely little gem of a museum in downtown Milwaukee on the campus of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, this is a great place to spend a few hours admiring the quite extensive collection organized around the theme of "Man and Work."
Scott Potter
This is an amazing collection and museum! It is themed all about work through the centuries. The paintings and sculpture are depictions of things related to the trades. You will see many stunning pieces and it will take you a few hours to get through the 3 or 4 floors of it all. You will learn too. The roof has a sculpture garden as well which is a must see. On a nice day this would be a real treat of a trip!
Jill Cichacki
It was interesting if you have someone give you a tour so you get the history on the paintings
Gabriel Olaciregui
One of the most unique (and largest) industrial art museum on the planet. Highly recommend visiting this hidden gem of Milwaukee.

kenneth Doine
Terrific museum, found it one afternoon while headed to see a play and have visited it three times and will visit it again. Go on a warm day and visit the statues on the roof.
Nic Strike
Most of the art is paintings, but it can be a nice place to have class. No comfortable seating in the museum to do hw though.
Sue Bailey
Each floor dedicated to a different type of work or craft. Impressive body of work- both paintings and sculpture. Head to the rooftop for a garden and stainglass viewing
Paul Thacker
Let's of beautiful paintings on the history of Engineering and technology. I could have spent hours and hours here.
Paul Shinkle
This is an extraordinary collection of fine art, all of it dealing with people at work. Many of the pieces are simply exquisite.
David “Prop head Dave” Mulhorn
This is a very interesting Museum to visit, the view from the rooftop is outstanding.
Walter Galen
Love the paintings, the setting. Don't miss the sculptures on the roof.
Theodore Salgado
A National must-see. No where else can one find a collection of art devoted to mankind's work ethic and achievements.
Chelsea Calvert
The museum is nice and has a nice collection of art. Unfortunately it has a glass elevator and glass atrium and stairs that go up along the glass atrium. Some might think that sounds pretty and it is unless you suffer from a fear of heights and get trapped in the elevator on the 3rd floor. We used the call button to get help which came pretty quickly but whatever they did caused the elevator to drop from the 3rd floor to the 1st floor VERY quickly. We didn't get any warning that the elevator was going to move much less drop so dramatically. This was pretty bad experience and when the doors were opened for us we were not greeted with an apology, explanation, or any sign of concern for our wellbeing.
So it is a nice little museum but if you go there, take the stairs!
Gene Wright
Unique in the world! Nothing like it. The art is awesome especially "The Bookworm". The rooftop garden is extra special.

In many ways better then Milwaukee's Art Museum.

Lore Lisheron
One of my favorite Milwaukee art collections houses some offices of MSOE faculty. Theme of artwork exhibited is Men at Work, including professions ranging from farmers to physicians, ironworkers to glassblowers. Highlights are an entryway ceiling mural, mosaic floor and rooftop sculpture garden.
Isaac Grahl
Unique collection, definitely a few gems, really enriches the MSOE campus
Dave N.
Small museum but nice exhibits.
Benjamin Hynes
This is one of my favorite hidden places in MKE.
Kent Lewandowski
Very friendly service, very interesting collection and a building worth touring just for the rooftop view. At a price of $5, it's not asking too much.
The museum has a large collection, which I found more interesting the higher up I went. I especially liked the old movies of steel casting and glass blowing.
The collector Dr. Grohmann tended to collect mostly german artists with some dutch, belgian and american works mixed in. I could not help thinking it was too bad that other cultures / ethnicities that contributed to Milwaukee's industrial past were not represented. But I get it, it's a private collection, not a public one. And I am grateful it exists!
I was also happy to take them up on free parking in the MSOE lot next door, also.
Andy Saputo
Amazing art and friendly staff.
Erik Duhn
This museum is unpublicized among the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area. The collector has amassed great works from around the globe. When I was there, the tour guide provided good insight as to how the works were acquired and who the collector was.
Grohmann was chased out of Poland after World War 2 since his quarry was not seized by the Nazi's. It is a great collection and I think more people should take advantage of it around the Milwaukee area.
Ann Steinmetz Harris
Large collection of art related to industry, agriculture and old time professions.
Hunter Riley
Great art museum showcasing predominantly German artists.
Orrin Maki
Very amazing displays of time tales of progress in the world.

The Grohman gallery is one of Milwaukee's best kept secret- my first encounter was a couple years ago - I was totally engaged in the exhibits- art relating to work- our city is so fortunate to have the school if engineering. Matc, & our legacy of " the machine shop of the world ", during WW2 as well as our tradition of being ahead of our times with all trades, whether steel, tanning, or beer.
Im looking forward to seeing the current show honoring milwaukee's contribution of the typewriter. The Nash. & more.
