Reviews of Charles Allis Art Museum

Visiting this museum was part of an enchanted afternoon in Milwaukee's Lower East Side. You'll have to decide for yourself what's the most appealing: the private art collection or the home itself. I ambled thru the museum at my own pace and enjoyed all of its tranquility. While standing on the second floor marble staircase, I watched a wedding reception on the patio below. What a lovely setting for special occasions.

Gorgeous house museum. First floor focuses on furnishings showing how the family lived plus a diverse and global art collection procured by the Allis family. Upper floor is more minimalist, showcasing temporary exhibits and contemporary local artists. This dual-function house means locals can return with confidence that they’ll see something new each time. And visitors and locals can glimpse into the past thanks to the first floor. Admission here gets you admission to the Villa Terrace Museum, just make sure you obtain proof of ticket purchase. Or even better - purchase a membership! Recommend!

Beautiful historic home, made for a nice walk through. The museum lacked information about the home itself and its art collection. Though the current exhibit ‘Ghosts of Segregation’ was fascinating. $10 wasn’t bad, but like i said would have enjoyed more historic information on the home and individual.

Beautiful old mansion. Well worth a visit.

We attended a beautiful wedding there in October! The weather was perfect to walk around the outdoor patio and the large exhibit room was wonderful for dancing. It was fun to explore the museum as the room was being switched from ceremony to reception. Beautiful building! I love the staircase.

We went inside the Dressing The Abbey exhibit. Well worth the money. I would love to go back just to spend the time in the museum

Once a month they offer a free day at the Charles Allis Art Museum! It was smaller than expected and many rooms have been closed off or transitioned to new art instead of the original pieces that were in the home. It is not really a good place to take young kids but is a nice place to experience a little art, history and culture with an older group of children or adult friends.

This is such a wonderful, underrated museum! We've been there a few times now and it's always really interesting to see how they incorporate the exhibits, which are often a bit more modern, into the historical house. The price of admission is extremely reasonable and all of the staff/volunteers we've dealt with have been helpful and happy to let us wander.

Such a beautiful house and an amazing museum filled with tons of history. It's amazon at how original this place is. But the allis family always planned on making it a museum so it's in amazing shape and filled with priceless treasures, just hiding in the heart of the lower East side. Must visit and see the amazing stuff in here.

The Charles Allis Art Museum is so beautiful. We chose to have our wedding, and we loved it for its uniqueness. My only complaint is the events coordinator, Megan, is not very good. She was unresponsive to many emails and seemed disorganized. At our final walkthrough just weeks before the wedding with my caterer and wedding, Megan took absolutely no notes. She also was not present at the wedding. Luckily her staff really stepped up, and our wedding was perfect. I would definitely recommend as a wedding venue but do expect to work a little harder and some frustration in working with Megan.

Elevator out of order, no one explained the exhibition was 2 floors, so I only saw first floor exhibit. Feeling sad.

Great fun afternoon full of amazing Downton Abbey Costume, architecture and searching for secret servant passages.

What an amazing family to donate their home and art work. Such a beautiful home with excellent craftsmanship! Highly recommend seeing if you love art, history and architecture.

The Charles Allis is one of the greatest cultural treasures in Milwaukee and one that is little known, even among local artists. This gilded age mansion is reserved in size and exudes a humble midwestern modesty. Charles Allis collected small to mid-sized oil paintings from the Barbizon (French Landscape) and Hudson River (American Landscape) Schools along with an assortment of European and ancient art. This includes several works by Blakelock, Inness, Diaz, Rousseau, Troyon, Dupre, and Camille Corot. Spectacular individual examples by Thomas Moran, Thomas Gainsborough, Winslow Homer, Rosa Bonheur, William Trost Richards, and Paulus Potter are also present. The entrance to the library is flanked by two portraits by Lucas Cranach the Elder, both in their original frames. These works are accented by ancient art from China, Greece, and Rome along with a selection of period furniture and Tiffany glass. If you are a person familiar with fine art this museum is something to behold, a quiet and wonderful place to see paintings.

Outstanding collection of artwork in the beautiful historic Charles Allis mansion designed specifically to showcase the art and generously donated to the city.
Peg Harloff
Excellent display from Downton Abbey. Beautiful, well kept home.

To be hones when I hear a "museum" I pretty much imagine a place full of artefacts. This one has nothing to do with such things. It is modern and still interesting and appealing. Do visit!

I just voted here for the second time, they made it so easy and clapped when I walked in because there were only 3 other people voting at the time and they were happy that they had something to do. Please god let him win ag....

Very beautiful museum with famous artists. There were paintings and sculptures and the house is a work of art.
