Reviews of Speed Art Museum
One of the coolest art museums I’ve been too. I loved it. Well designed and interesting art. I’d be very fortunate to encounter more museums as well put together as this one.
Went to visit for the Paranormal America exhibit, had an amazing time. The museum is free on Sundays but special exhibits still cost for non-members. Worth every penny though! I love this museum, even more so due to its accessibility. The Speed offers light folding chairs for visitors to take and use throughout the museum so that anyone can explore and at their own pace. Definitely go if you get the chance, every exhibit they feature is worth it.
I hadn't been to the Speed since I was a kid. My husband, my brother, his wife, my nephew & his wife and I all went for the last day of the Supernatural exhibit. I was so very pleased to find that this place is a first class museum. We will be back when we're in town. Sadly I didn't get to see everything , stupid Fybro, but I'm looking forward to pur next visit.
I really enjoyed the after hours event Codeswitching by Sanford Biggers. The art installation was beautiful. The museum itself is a very nice venue. I'll definitely return.
Next level event space for big parties. Sleek and elegant with superb custom services. The staff got me all the way together on what I needed. Beautiful glass windows, clean and spacious.
This place is great. It's a lot bigger than I thought it would be. There are numerous art pieces that are spectacular. The speed art museum is a must visit. On Sundays the general admission is free.
First time going. Took the kids. They have an interactive are for kids. And the whole place is massive. Free on Sundays. Free to Frontliners and students. Kid discounts. We had a blast and are definitely going back.
Sunday's are free admission. Wonderful selection of period furnishings, paintings by Monet, Rembrandt, and Cezanne, as well as contemporary blown glass
This is a historic museum with a modern edition, that is absolutely fabulous. It totally runs in and has amazing art as well as movies and special events. A must-see when visiting Louisville Kentucky!
The Speed after hours party is a lovely little soiree. Jazz band in the atrium, food, drinks, what fun! Great exhibit!
They still have free Sunday admissions. Great museum full of a wide variety of art from Ancient works and European art to modern day art.
Wonderful exhibit! Would highly recommend. Museum great too. Hope to see this exhibit again if comes to my town.
A small but nice one. The treasure exhibition is really awesome. For the oil painting, two stunning pieces are all in Room 23. Especially for the last figure, seems to be hearing the holy song when you staring at the paint. The Kentucky art was closed today.
Amazing and mesmersing.
Every art piece is mind blowing . The pictures taken don't do justice to the art pieces. You have to see them yourself to have the amazing experience
As stated by Jerry Saltz:
"Don’t go to a museum with a destination. Museums are wormholes to other worlds. They are ecstasy machines. Follow your eyes to wherever they lead you…and the world should begin to change for you.”
– Jerry Saltz
I visited the Alphonse Mucha exhibit while I was in town and it was beautiful. I highly recommend visiting this art museum.
Such a marvelous art museum! I had heard good things, but I had tempered expectations from visiting other smaller art museums. The Speed did not disappoint. They had a wonderfully varied collection and their Kentucky section was super cool. It is definitely worth a stop to soak in some culture. The parking garage was right near it, and they even have a good selection of souvenirs.
I've lived in Louisville for over a year and didn't think much about missing the art museum. But dang! It's a great place. Right now Monet's water lilies are on display. And there's this incredibly moving piece by Wolfgang Buttress that brought me to tears ❤️ I would go back again just to be with that piece. It's a huge place and dynamic in its offerings. Such a cool art musuem.
Had a wonderful visit, mainly to view the Mucha exhibit. It was fantastic! The only complaint I have is that the kitchen closed at 3 and we showed up for lunch at 3:15. Too busy viewing to eat, but it would have been nice to have been able to get lunch.
Stunning. Various pieces/artists' work. Free admission on Sundays. Large museum.
Huge place, tons of art to check out with three floors! The staff are all extremely nice and helpful, beautiful pieces and a cool gift shop!! Highly recommended for art lovers.
Great Mucha traveling exhibit on the third floor, until January 2023. Otherwise, liked that they shuffled the collection around - modern and contemporary in old building, more classic periods on 2nd floor of new wing. Favorite! 🆒
Loved seeing a Monet in person. Always free on Sunday to visit the Museum.
Boyfriend and I went there to celebrate his birthday. We love the art pieces here and the art is beautiful. The Art Nouveau exhibit is my personal favorite
I love going here, especially since it's so close to campus. I love going back to see what new exhibitions they've added. The building is also beautifully structured. Every time I come here, I feel inspired and motivated to be creative.
Promise, Witness and Remembrance exhibit is worth the drive here. If you have an interest in opening your eyes to the place race plays in America this exhibition will serve you. The artistic works stand on their own and together make a statement. Free on Sunday this year for this exhibition and most of the museum.
Free Sundays, but some exhibits need tickets. You can also become a member. They have so many great offerings for our community.
Large, varied, and unique. New wonders around every corner. Excellent interactive kids area with many different choices to stimulate young minds. Polite and professional staff. Sundays are free!
Was there for the Mucha exhibit. Nice museum. The museum is free, but you pay for the special exhibits. Pleasant day spent at the museum plus lunch in the cafeteria.
Wow!! Went to see the paper dress exhibit!! Oh my how exquisite! Incredible and beautiful!! The installation is so interesting. If you enjoy fashion and or paper .. Go!
Loved the Mucha exhibit - worth the two hour drive!
The new addition has made a good museum great. This collection is an assortment of artistic jewels, now with enough space to give them context and breathing room. The addition also affords space for special exhibits. The recent Picasso to Pollock was a delight. There's enough here to spend the day, but even if you only have an hour between meetings, you will find inspiration, beauty, and artistic range for every taste.
Beautiful clean layout. Friendly discreet staff. I loved the modern art exhibit and the flemish and danish collections were nice.
Loved the Alphonse Mucha exposition!
The museum’s architecture is beautiful. Paid parking available.
This was a great stop on our trip! Wonderful exhibits and was it had free admission on Sunday. I would definitely recommend stopping if you're in the area. You do pay for parking in the garage.
Lovely visit. Would have been nice had the upper levels been open but we can always visit again. We did get to see the Grandfather Clock exhibit before it was closed.
I have enjoyed the Speed Art Museum for over thirty five years. I have enjoyed classes, tours, dinners, exhibits and volunteering in the gift shop. Since they remodeled, I have visited the museum but not been as active as I have been in the past. The remodeled museum is gorgeous and was well worth the wait.
Great place to learn about history of art.. Today got to listen to some great folk music :) Love the exhibits each time I go! Best thing is on Sunday's it's free!!!
Supernatural in America special exhibit was fascinating and the house collection has everything from the Masters to Native American and African Art as well. Free on Sundays and low income free specials as well.
Nice small museum with a good collection of Kentucky art and furniture. Also some old Masters and European
I'm no expert, but their collection seems to be an excellent representation of art over the last 1000 years. A few items are by artists whom I recognize, most are not. We certainly enjoyed the several hours we spent there.
I love The Speed and my grandkids love Art Sparks and the Egyptian room. It has always been one of our favorite activities, and we'll be happy when they can open back up with regular hours/days.
Quite a variety of interesting pieces. Lots of unique items you won't find anywhere else. I'm not sure why it is called Speed Art. We arrived with only one hour to peruse and we were rushed and still missed a lot. You definitely need a few hours if you like to read descriptions, pause at pieces and/or take photos (no flash photography ). I would definitely return. Note: Free on Sundays and accepts token donations. I recommend this place.
The Speed Art Museum has a really nice collection for a city the size of Louisville. It is actually on the University of Louisville Campus. They had several special exhibits when we visited today, including a Hunter S. Thompson "Gonzo" exhibit. Sunday admission was free, and the facility was not crowded at all. We will visit again!
Easily the best place to enjoy art in the state. Their collections are varied and well curated. Temporary exhibitions are also interesting and rotate frequently enough to keep coming back.
Wonderful art museum! It has something for everyone. It even has a learning and hands on area for kids. My family and I will definitely visit again.
This is a really great opportunity for the City of Louisville. Wonderful art exhibits with specific regional art such as Kentucky and African art exhibits. Gets famous and the unknown artists. Had a great kids exploration center on the bottom floor. Free on Sundays.
This place never disappoints. Always learn something new,in a relaxed atmosphere.
Lovely exhibits, especially enjoyed the Kentucky art and many local artists featured.
The Speed has an impressive collection including Picasso, Rembrandt, and more. Today we saw a temporary Warhol exhibit. The world examine Warhol's relationship with Catholicism. Very interesting!
My daughter and I went on a field trip here with her class and had a great time. There were many hands on things for the kids to do that made them think. It was great seeing them try to figure out things.
We got to walk around looking at the different art and then got a tour guide who took us on a trip. The kids got passports that they marked in as they visited different pieces of art from around the world. My daughter showed hers to her dad and grandma and talked about what she learned there. Will definitely be going back (only next time with all the kids).
Wonderful museum. Free on Sundays and much to look at. Modern art, interactive area for kids, ancient artifacts and lots of great paintings. Cafe located inside for some food and drinks
Free admission on Sundays. Interactive exhibits. Great for groups and kids. Cool as heck! It's art!
Isabella De Borschgrave exhibit! Hand crafted & fashioned in paper!! Each & every detail...
Extraordinary....the piece shown is a reproduction of a master painting owned by the Speed
We went on a Sunday afternoon so it was free and not very crowded. Nice museum. Enjoyed the different types of art. Nice small cafe.
Great exhibit, great museum, parking garage is rough! Parking garage is VERY EXPENSIVE.. the horse exhibit was wonderful, and museum is big, wear comfortable shoes!
A cool little art museum worth a visit. It is free on Sundays, or has been in the past, so definitely worth it on the weekends.
A wonderful, diverse museum. Taking COVID precautions seriously. Spent 2 1/2 hours visiting all galleries and the special exhibit. Could have easily been 3 1/2, but we came during the later part of the day, the museum was closing.
The Speed is one of my favorite art venues in Kentucky.
I went on Sunday -- it's usually free all day except for the special exhibitions -- specifically to see Breaking the Mold: Investigating Gender. I was also happy to find the Picasso to Pollock exhibition up at the same time.
Both excellent shows, well curated, with a nice range of different media and scaled pieces. Well worth the visit!
I've heard so many wonderful things about the paper dresses.Totally mind blowing.
Solid, well presented place to take in some culture. The Mucha exhibit in 2022 was a delight.
Great place to visit with family or friends. I hadn't been in a while and reminded myself that I need to come at least once or twice a year.
Nice smaller museum that is perfect if you have just an hour or two to visit. Nice variety of art including sculptures, glass, metal fiber art and paintings. I saw two Picasso's, a Monet and a Cassata. Gift shop had some nice things and the prices were okay.
Fantastic exhibit. Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper. Unbelievable that these costumes were made from paper The detail is extraordinary.
Beautiful museum with many interesting and profound exhibits.
Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper
This exhibit was amazing. Such detail from paper. Got to see it in person. If you are Spalding University Faculty or Student, you get in FREE!!!
Loved our visit to the museum, exquisite architecture. Great exhibition. Take time to spend time with your kids in the interactive area and make some art. The gift shop was super fun and great prices. Restaurant was closed super early.
The art is all really beautiful and unique, but the building is itself really pretty, from the outside it’s shaped in a way that seems unconventional but manages to still come together and fit with the style the Museum was going for perfectly, just a nice place to visit
Codex quilt show. Outstanding creativity and color.
Lots of good stuff to see. Seems like the change out what is available regularly so repeat trips are worthwhile.
I love visiting this incredible museum, looking at a few of my old favorites as well as finding something new to enjoy every trip.
I toured the museum a couple of days ago. I like the aesthetic view inside.
Very nice and interesting art museum. Nice Kentucky art collection.
Went for a free Sunday, was surprised by the vast collections! Asked for a map after a few rooms cause I was worried I might miss something!
Even if you are not a huge art goer, the Speed Art Museum is a fantastic place to visit. You can see works of art from Kentuckians and world artists. There is free admission on Sunday to the museum, excluding the featured exhibit. Highly recommend everyone to go.
Went for the Supernatural exhibit, and it was pretty good. The space, layout, architecture of the museum is very nice. We've gone previously to see the permanent exhibit and it's definitely worth a trip. I believe the permanent exhibit is free on Sundays.
Special Exhibit: Dystopian Louisville/New Normal
Thoughtful, powerful, amazingly curated art museum. The community outreach of the Speed is generous. The children’s section for hands on art is great!
It's so inspiring to view great art and we are lucky to have this museum right here in Kentucky!
Place looks great. First visit since the remodel. Great exhibits and Wiltshire Pantry at the Cafe is VERY good. 👍 …
Took my boys to see the Breona Taylor exhibit. It was very powerful. They enjoyed it so much.
Top-notch stuff! The glass exhibit was amazing, and the paper dresses were super cool. The regular exhibits were very well done and we were surprised at the quality of the offerings found here. Definitely worthy of an afternoon spent poking around at all the cool pieces housed here.
Very beautiful place and very welcoming of all types of people. They also have seats all over for people that cant walk very far. Also have a little cafe and shop to buy items.
I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of art. The facility is beautiful and the staff is friendly.
Several rooms of wonderful art can be found here. They also have excellent summer programs for children. There are dining options available as well as the occasional nighttime programs that are not to be missed!
Great art museum and the special exhibit was amazing
I really like this museum. A must visit while you are at Louisville
Amazing displays of art in different types of mediums. Will definitely be back!
Awesome exhibit. Helper?
were very friendly.
Amazing artwork and revolving exhibits that fascinate people from all walks of life.
Always fun to go to this museum and it's free for U of L students. Would pop in between classes and look at the art. Theor special exhibits are something to keep an eye on as they rotate out. So far my favorites have been paranormal art and an exhibit on Hunter S Thompson.
Very nice atmosphere, family oriented, great time, very educational
Good place to walk around, and they seem to have actual art. My favorite pieces are the sculptures
Came to see the supernatural American art exhibition and was not disappointed. Really impressed with the variety of works on show and the thoughtful curation. There was a ton to see and it was exciting to see art presented by theme and artistic intent rather than just by the period it was made in.
The permanent exhibitions were also interesting, though much more conventional.
Spectacular on the whole, though we visited for a special exhibition.
A true gem of Louisville; don’t skip it because it’s not on “Museum Row”. The Speed has a beautiful look and an impressive permanent collection for a mid-sized city. Their temporary exhibitions are some of the best I’ve seen. Highly recommended!
Very cool art museum, and it was free to boot! Definitely check it out!
Not enough time to go through the entire museum. Will definitely return! A must-see every direction you turn!
Large areas were under renovation, so that was not any fun. Other then that they have a nice collection.
Amazing. So many beautiful pieces. Also free on Sundays!
We came here to see the Supernatural America exhibit. When we entered the museum, we had to go up two very high flights of stairs. The heat was turned up quite a lot and so naturally we were out of breath. My boyfriend pulled his mask down for about 2 seconds and the staff were immediately on us about it. This happened to us 3 times as we went around the exhibit and we were even followed and intently watched by them. We have never experienced this kind of aggressive policing at any museum before. And let me just say we are not anti-mask or anti-vaxx people, we are both vaccinated and wear masks. What’s the point of having a vaccine and boosters if you’re going to act like people will die when a visitor takes a fresh breath for a few seconds in a massive uncrowded building. It was just ridiculous, it made us so uncomfortable. They also did not even check for tickets, I had paid $40. We will not be coming back here any time soon.
Very nice stop in Louisville, a great space with a lot of interesting and eye-catching pieces!
The glass art was really colorful and satisfying. Also, the paper clothing exhibition was very novel to me, and quite impressive!
Definitely worth a stop to folks interested in art and also some good history!
Clean. Great place to see awesome art.
The museum was great and also make sure you grab brunch or lunch at the cafe', the veggie poutine was amazing!!!!!
Visited Mucha exhibition. Thoroughly enjoyed it
Great museum, and the kid-friendly basement (Art Sparks) is a lot of fun for the family, as well.
The Speed is a great place to explore. Their exhibitions are usually top rated and interesting. I wish I had young children -their child and family programs sound amazing. Don't overlook their cinema offerings.
Wonderful art museum here in Louisville. The Speed After Dark events are always a lot of fun and definitely something to try!
Went here for a college visit, staff was really nice, installations beautiful and I loved how close to the art you were actually able to get. Great time and well worth another trip
I always enjoy going to this place. I don’t mind spending money here because I fully support what they do.
I went to see "The Power of the Dog" and was delighted with the size and cleanliness of the theater. I will certainly be back for other events and exhibits. I do wish the theater had had concessions available. I can't seem to fully enjoy a theater movie without popcorn! The explanation was that this was due to Covid restrictions, but other theaters are offering food, so possibly the Speed's rules are a bit restrictive.
Great collections...friendly atmosphere..good size museum, not overwhelming
Closed Monday through Thursday! As a traveler visiting this city every year multiple times I've still had no chance to even get inside this place. Your hours are terrible as well. You keep making this place open less and less. I guess people in Louisville don't care about art.
Good variety of art -- perfect sized museum.
Great Warhol exhibit plus a great variety of local and international artists
This was my first of many visits to come!Beautiful place exhibits are very interesting. The glass collection was definitely interesting. Looking forward to the cinema opening again & the Kentucky collection that is set to open.
Awesome place to have a conversation theme and to share ideas. It is defiantly recommended to come with friends and family.
One of my favorite places. I stop in often. :)
The kids have fun. I loved the flower exhibit
Very relaxing space that will soothe your soul.
Great staff! Follow health-safety guidelines. Love this place!
Amazing museum!! Great collection ranging from early European art to African to down home Kentucky works. Very enjoyable!!
The Speed Art Museum is wonderful! Sunday is free, though parking was $7. The little bistro inside has delicious food and artisan drinks. The collect is separated into regions/time period it is interesting to see how the world looked at similar times through different eyes. Oh, and there is an interactive area for kids in the lower level. I spent the whole day and didn't get to see everything, definitely going back.
Great museum to come to. This place is beautiful and does a wonderful job with social distancing and other COVID protocols.
My favorite exhibit has to be ancient art since they feature so many beautiful pieces. Another favorite part of the museum of mine is the staff. They are extremely helpful and are very nice. Great museum to go to!
Really loved going here, lots of amazing art to see from all over the world and it's not to expensive to go either. On top of that they often have events for different artist in history give you plenty of reason to go back.
I really enjoyed my trip to the Speed! A must see when in Louisville
The speed art museum is a wonderful place to soak up some local history world history and really see some architectural an artistic beauty. This is a first class facility.
I live in Owensboro and occansionally I'll go to Louisville for work, my sister in law and I decided to take advantage and went to the speed museum when its free for KY residents on Sundays! Love that they have that option, we didn't have enough time to see everything but what we did see was great. I would go with at least a few hours of exploring. They were kind of lacking in their modern and African art sections though, I was surprised. The ancient Greek and Egyptian section was a treat.
I had never been to a Museum..Will go again we all have to live a little and try new things.I went for the Paranormal tour of Art...But was so amazed by the different Examples of Art and displays, something for everyone including Kentucky art...Was a plus..
Free admission on Sunday and free parking meters on Sunday make this the best day to go. Three levels of art. Really great place so allow yourself two hours to see it all
Wow they have changed their building and it's fantastic for a college owned art museum! I'm highly impressed with their offerings for summer camps for kids. Highly impressed also with the renovated building and extreme friendly staff. They have some gorgeous pieces that should not be missed! Their cafe is delicious. It's tranquil, sophisticated and inspirational.
Beautiful museum incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff
Wonderful museum and one of the most interesting docent-led tours I've ever been on!
I went here on a date and it ended up being a great time. You can tell they are very serious about the building and art integrity and everything is super clean. It took us about 3 hours to get through and see everything. If there's one thing I would improve, I'd like for there to be more modern work because while there was some, there wasn't a ton. I also wished that there were more large sculptures. There were a few, but I love big pieces of art like that. Regardless, it's a beautiful place and a great way to spend an afternoon. PS- the parking garage cost us $10 if you wanted to know rates
Love love love it! Especially the art quilts, what a great show. Great museum, hope to return.
The museum is small but choice. The works are well displayed but the best thing about this gem is the quality of the commentary cards. They are definitely worth reading. I've been to the Speed Museum many times and I could spend hours and hours there. They have so many beautiful things to see and such a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. No pressure to 'move along' or 'move so someone else can see' - just all the time in the world to enjoy and appreciate the culture of what you're seeing. It's a must go to location.
Good museum with a good variety of exhibits
I have been going here for decades. I only go on free Sundays and would not pay to go because I find most of their permanent collection uninteresting other than the native American stuff. On occasion they do have new collections coming through which you have to pay extra for. Some of those are decent and some not in my opinion.
Really great art museum. Not huge but a diverse collection and they change their art shows fairly often. Handicap accessible and child friendly. They have portable chairs you can take with you, earphones and noise muffling headphones as well ad wheelchairs and strollers available. They have a children's section and a nice gift shop and cafe. There's a nice nursing station in the first floor bathroom as well as a gender neutral restroom. The museum also hosts lots of special events for members and the community.
The Speed is a good museum with an extensive collection in a great setting. And Louisville is a great town for lots of reasons. If you enjoy a nip of bourbon now and then, think of this as Nirvana. Lots of places to enjoy a free sip, and you can buy brands here that you can't even get outside of Kentucky.
Nice exhibit on the 🐎 horse February 2020. Grandkids enjoyed the Arts for Sparks exhibit even more. …
Came here on a Sunday for my first time and it was really lovely!
Mucha exhibit was very well done and very informative
I love the free entry on sundays. It is such a neat place to visit. They have new art exhibits everytime I go. The art is beautiful, and definitely worth the trip. The staff seem friendly as can be,and the children's center is fun too! If you're on a budget and want something fun to do, this is the place!
I was glad they had the movie I wanted to see. It was not at any of the regular theatres. The theatre was nice and the museum was beautiful. Tickets were not very expensive.
The venue was nice. I just wish the people were a little more polite. I went to the gift shop after the movie and I asked the lady if there was a cover charge for the museum. Her response was literally, "We're closing in 10 minutes" and then she mumbled on about the rates on the different days. I honestly couldn't understand what she said about the prices.
I replied, " I just wondered because no one stopped me at the door." I really wanted to know how much it cost to get in but all this lady wanted to tell me is that they were closing.... But at least there were some nice people working there.
There aren't a lot of local artists who have work here. The Breonna Taylor exhibition was sort of exploitative and didn't have much of a theme.
Had a great time, really enjoyed the lipstick poetry. The museum has lots of interesting things. My grand daughter really enjoyed the activities, my son and grand son liked the room that copied your movements. Can't wait to come again
This is a beautiful and quality museum with a nice variety of art from many time periods and parts of the world. I especially love the fact that admission is free on Sundays.
It’s always amazing. Whether you’re just there to see the main exhibit, or looking at a new or traveling exhibit, or going to the kids area with your children, Speed Art Museum is always a good experience. The food is tasty. Chocolate chip cookies especially;) all together an amazing and beautiful experience every time I go.
Staff was friendly, art was amazing, building is beautiful.
We went to see the Warhol exhibition. His work wasn't as interesting as I expected. At least with a master like Picasso, you see a growth of artistry skills. Warhol's big prints are amazing for the sheer magnitude. Yes it takes talent to make these prints. It just wasn't what we like.
A great, diverse musuem with wonderful educational and entertainment programs that highlight the Arts and culture. I'd highly recommend as a venue for events and social gatherings. Very professional and skilled staff with excellent customer service. I always enjoy attending the Speed After Dark and Pride at the Speed events with friends and colleagues. A great way to connect socially and enjoy the Arts.
The Speed is a great gem on the UofL campus and Louisville community.
The only down side to the museum is that it's Friday - Sunday only. Impressive space, great variety of exhibits, and good at making art intersectional and accessible.
Very much enjoyed this museum, nicely spaced out and large variety of exhibits. Try visiting on a Sunday, due to the free admission. Parking is $7 in the nearby garage. They also have a cinema, gift shop, café, and exhibit on the 3rd floor for an additional charge. Make sure to visit all the floors so nothing is missed!
The Speed is an excellent art museum. I find something new to enjoy each time I visit.
I went with my friend and it was a wonderful experience. The actual museum is stunning, and they have wonderful pieces of art, sculpture, design, and textiles. Their Artspark program is also incredible, and allows young children to get engaged with art and play with its components. One of my absolute favorite things in Louisville!
A wonderful treasure in the city, even more so since its $60 million renovation and expansion completed in 2017. Excellent collections and special exhibits, strong cinema program, good cafe. And thanks to a generous endowment, admission is free on Sundays. Well worth a visit and returns.
Great museum, the lower level has some great local history and I loved this old whiskey container.
This is not an encyclopedic museum, but the staff here certainly knows how to make the most of a not-so-extensive collection (relatively speaking). The architecture is visually pleasing and the exhibition spaces are spacious. Signage is clear and the navigation between galleries is a breeze. Interpretive labels obviously receive a lot of curatorial attention: not only do almost all objects on display come with their own labels, but each of them has a small topic of its own.
Together, these elements constitute a pleasant visiting experience that makes the admission fee more than justified. Like what is stated on the Museum's website: whether you are "an art aficionado or don't know a Dali from a Degas," this is a great place for you to spend a few quality hours.
Clean, well taken care of. Lots of beautiful artwork and exhibits.
I took my 15 yr old granddaughter mainly to see the paper dresses but she was interested in so much more. It was a wonderful experience for both of us.
This was such an awesome collection of art. I'm not an art junkie but this collection was so varied and quite well put together. After looking through the artwork we had a great lunch at the cafe! I got the orange salad and my husband got the salmon patties. We both really enjoyed our meals and the presentation was definitely what you'd expect from an art museum.
Very beautiful artwork in all galleries. I love the diversity if the different exhibitions - they have European and American works as well as African and Native American works. They also have paintings, pottery, sculptures, glass, clothing, and many other mediums of art. They have temporary exhibits that change every few weeks, so there's always something new to see. There's really something for everyone, and pictures are encouraged!
A wonderful venue for a party, and as such I didn't get to see the entire museum in its full glory. However there were some very interesting works in there and something I never expected to see whilst in Kentucky! Take a trip if you are in town as it is in stark contrast to everything else.
If your a fan of art, plan to stay for 2+ hrs. Short Uber ride from downtown and Cafe offers a variety of lunch, beverages and sweet treats.
Fabulous art museum with an amazing range of collections - will be visiting again and again! Bonus feature is the Speed Cinema showing international and arts films you won't see in regular movie theaters, opening up a whole world of different perspectives.
Saw the Warhol exhibit. Very excited since I am an artist. A little bit disappointed...once we saw the EXCELLENT exhibit we wanted to explore the rest of the museum and it was closed☹. Wish they would have let us know that when we arrived.
Very cool exhibit on the supernatural. It was also interesting to see the Kentucky local art exhibit. Huge airy well lit space.
Free on Sunday's.
Giant selection of art. Has something for just about anyone. Lots of famous paintings, local artists, local artifacts and memorabilia. Hosts really cool events almost every month and us even free on Sundays for the time being. Has lots of stuff for kids in the lower section. Parking isn't free but it's a small price to pay if you're already going on a Sunday. Highly recommend to anyone. It even has a small gift shop right near the entrance.
On of the best museums in Louisville!
The treasures are breathtaking!
The tapestry room is a must see, as is most everything in there, I look forward to going back, as some of the exhibits were still being restored!
The receptionists were very helpful in planning our visits, thanks! :)
Fantastic Museum in the middle of the UofL campus, wish I would have had more time to fully explore. It's an easy four hour visit if you take your time to appreciate and read about the artwork. It has a very eclectic assortment of art to view from all over the world and a Kentucky assortment. They are currently for a limited time open on Sundays for free which was great to take my high schoolers for a school project they are both working on. Will definitely be coming back to finish up the last few exhibits we missed.
Great outing for my family. The staff took appropriate precautions with scheduled arrival times, masks, and social distancing. The exhibition ( Andy Warhol) was well curated as was the rest of museum. I hioe to be able to go back again soon.
So incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing museum in Louisville. The exhibits, both primary and rotating are amazing. The events, especially Speed After Dark are fabulous! Check it out
...better yet join!
LOVE going to the Speed and it's free on Sundays for locals! Can't beat that as a fun date or thing to do on Sundays.
Wonderfully curated museum. There are so many programs and activities here that you are able to engage in, if it's your first time in an art museum or trip number 1000 there is something for you. There is a parking lot behind the building and free street parking after 6.
It's in my hometown, but it's still awesome. And home to the Speed Cinema, which is also awesome if you like Tarkovsky and other amazing filmmakers. The museum collection and changing exhibitions are good too. Sometimes it's fun to go to 21c but without the context of the Speed's diverse collection, 21c would get boring awfully quick. We have so many great things in Louisville!
You have to visit the Speed when in town visiting or if you live here!
The Speed is always a great place to go. This time it was a cinema event - well attended
This was the first time since the Speed Art Museum's addition was built on that we had visited. We were surprised on Sunday's the general admission is free but for the special exhibitions it only cost $5. The older part if the museum was for the most part still the same. They built the new addition into the existing museum nicely. It all seems to fit perfectly. In the older section there is a large area for children to interact and be creative. My 8 year old spent a long time here. She enjoyed making a paper quilt and writing a 7 word discription for a painting. They had an image projection room which all children, and not just my own quite enjoyed. As for the art, the exhibition art was interesting, even though I really don't care for the modern early 20th century style. Their large art collection from the Netherlands was quite representative of that style. And the room with the stain glass was pretty but a little too religious for me, but back in the day it seemed ALL the artwork was based from the Bible. They had a beautiful wood panelled room imported from England. Would have been nice if they had a larger plaque and/or discription as why they had this room. Don't get me wrong, the room was pretty, but just seemed like it was missing something. Over all the Speed Art Museum is a nice place to visit.
My granddaughter was so excited to see the Isabelle de Borchgrave's exhibit. It was her first time going there or to any art museum and she absolutely LOVED it!!!
Enjoyed touring Breonna exhibit today with family. Very heartfelt and emotional from the crib until her death. She was quite accomplished at a young age. Free parking, oh yeah! RIP sweet young lady🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 …
Every time I visit, my body relaxes, my thoughts slow down, and I am able to focus on the artwork. When gazing at a sculpture or painting, I am somewhat mesmerized while journeying to that time and space.
Beautiful place to have a musical performance.
Since The Speed reopened it has become the new center of Louisville arts - especially with special Friday night programs, music, presentations by people such as Wendell Berry and other authors. I have really enjoyed their Films - recently attending the showing of “Parasite,” which just won a Golden Globe award. The Speed is open to the public on Sundays (except for special exhibits).
The Gonzo! Exhibit was very entertaining and we appreciated there notice at the beginning of the exhibit that warned of adult content (imagery and language). While we were there, we hit up the Ebony G. Patterson exhibition (which was gorgeous and thoughtful) and everytime we asked employees for directions they were very specific and easy to follow. We had a great time!
Well curated and fun. Sundays are free, the collection is not the largest but the way it is presented is informative and the staff is very involved in helping guests understand the pieces they have. Great educational environment for the kids as it's a quick trip that doesn't languish in old dusty rooms.
Free admission on Sundays until 2024 compliments of Brown Foreman.
Wonderful museum, completely renovated. Thanks to a generous grant, it's free on Sundays. While I love the permanent collections and the exciting, ever-changing exhibits, my favorite part of this place is the cool little cinema tucked in a corner of the basement where they show the most interesting, avant garde cinema in the area.
Honestly, I don't frequent art museums, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I enjoy visiting occasionally. It's beautiful, interesting exhibits, etc. I'm consistently thinking I don't go often enough.
This place never disappoints. The atmosphere is always so calming, and the staff members are friendly. It is one of my favorite places to visit in Louisville whenever I get the chance to relax.
This is one of the most thoughtfully organized museums I've ever visited. You can tell that they've put in a lot of effort to make the museum friendly to everyone, seasoned art lovers and newcomers alike.
Their show on the rise of sneaker culture was great--I was skeptical about it at first, but turned out to be super interesting.
And don't miss "Christ Watching Over Dudes" by Purvis Young.
Such an incredible museum of art, well designed, magnificent art. I want to acknowledge the museum staff and Wiltshire cafe food and service. I was so impressed with that addition to an already great place. And the theatre!!! Fabulous. Ill be back for sure!
Great exhibits, had a wonderful guide on our tour.
First time here was for the Steven Holl lecture hosted by UK. Speed was a perfect venue for the talk, and it was awesome to see Mayor Fischer introduce the event. Great also to see the Speed partnering on these type of civic arts/culture partnerships.
Second visit was for a Free Sunday, and I absolutely loved the Louisville / local artist exhibit on the top floor (at the back) the self-trained artist (I think it was called rhapsody in brown??) was such a unique lens into the history of West Louisville and I appreciated seeing that the Speed is highlighting this part of the city’s history.
This place has a fun layout. It offers beautiful paintings and arts that truly open your mind to new philosophical truths. It also offers a deep look into the past with pieces from the past. It's a very unifying place and is great to go to with your homies.
I could not ask for more from a Kentucky theater playing films like these.
I just love this place. There is something for everyone.
Incredibly well designed. Great movies! Definitely check it out. My dog is featured in the poster and postcards of the painting by Gayla Irwin. She's the small ocherese being held by one of the models.
An amazing museum, user friendly, top quality exhibits and wonderful staff. Always an enjoyable experience.
We were there to enjoy the performance of Kentucky Salsa All Star Band, the concert was great but the museum floor was very hard for dance. The drinks very expensive ($10) and one of the waitress was she was picking up the glasses with the drinks still unfinished. After we paid $ 10 USA for the drinks we felt bad to see that they were removed from the table completely full. Was it an extraterm for people to consume more drinks and get more profits? An unpleasant experience.
Beautiful staff. Beautiful architecture. Art sparks are a popular spot for kids. The museum has leveled up since the re-opening.
Enjoyed the Supernatural America exhibit over Thanksgiving holiday. It was great! Really love the new facility.
It's a beautiful facility. My issues are it was so very cold in the entire place and there was nowhere for the elderly to sit while waiting for the wedding party to arrive. Other than these two things...it was perfect. Now the parking lot attend was another issue. He was Very, Very rude and short with people. He seemed irritated that he had to be there.
A very respectable collection, well-installed and interpreted. One of my favorite rainy-day options. I've been visiting the Speed for a long time and ALWAYS notice something there that surprises and delights me. Top-notch cinema program, too. Plus a fun and clever kids' space.
The new wing is one of the nation's top works of contemporary architecture -- by Kulapat Yantrasast -- a dazzling counterpoint to the 1920s classicism of the original, Arthur Loomis-designed building. Be sure to pause at the Wiltshire cafe when your dogs are barking and your tummy's grumbling. Huzzah!.
A fabulous and beautiful place to spend some valuable leisure time! I found the staff to be helpful and friendly. The Speed Cinema offerings are current one-of-a-kind Cannes Festival as well as other national and international award-winning faire! I was really impressed and I really enjoyed my visit there to see the uniquely visual "Loving Vincent" (Van Gogh) artistically-drawn movie and I plan to return quite often!
A super cool place with awesome art of all walks of life. Definitely worth the trip. Take a date! Take the family! The employees are courteous and accommodating. Sundays are free!
Very nice museum. Staff is friendly and the exhibits are many
Wonderfully interesting paranormal exhibit on display for Halloween.
Sundays through March 2021 are free of charge. Permanent exhibits are wonderful, loved the Kentucky Room with furniture, folk art, local artists and such. The special exhibit of Ebony G. Patterson is breath taking and emotionally moving. I also loved Gonzo, An Illustrated Guide to Hunter S Thompson and his relationships with Steadman and Benton was awesome for mature audiences. I had forgotten he was from Kentucky.
Don't miss this museum. While they have a surprising collection of paintings from centuries past, it's the modern exhibits that slowed us down for a double take.
By the way there little food service was great too.
Local, regional, and internationally recognized art.
Sundays are free but plan on getting a ticket online for your visit time.
Many spaces, so explore curiously.
Great selection, spacious, modern building, well-organized. We covered most of it in one go, but I could easily have spent two days there. The cafe was a pleasant surprise; the food was quite good.
Andy Warhol Exhibit was truly stunning, MIRACULOUS even ; ). Seeing the images and artwork of Warhol's Mother Julia was a surprising treat, and the rest of the museum, old wings and new, was a sincere delight of sober, thoughtful, and at times playful curation. For example the juxtaposition of hand-woven and finely-detailed 15th- and 16th-century tapestries, some as big as theater screens, towering over intricate German paper engravings, the size of credit cards, was a pleasure in and of itself. Similar snacks for the mind, and body's five senses lie around every corner. We have NEVER been disappointed visiting the Speed Art Museum, nor have we yet to visit the same Speed twice. Bravo! : )
Amazing exhibition and experience!!!!
Entry is free on Sundays! If you get parking early its a great place to go on the Louisville campus. Some exhibits are of course not for everyone, but their is a large variety of different styles to grab your attention.
Amazing! The staff went above and beyond. I was there 3+hrs n still didn't see everything. This museum has such a vast array of are n exhibits and is massive. Very nice lay out.
I went specifically to see the Isabelle de Borchgrave exhibit but thoroughly enjoyed the whole museum experience. Art Sparks is currently closed.
My absolute favorite place. I always wanted to sleep in the Elizabethan room. The Speed is haunted,& I don't know if I can get gluten free in the restaurant. Well worth a visit. Very highly recommended.
Great museum. Free on Sundays. Expect to spend over 2 hours if you are truly interested in the art. If not, you can easily browse right through in less than 2 hours.
We so enjoyed the paper dress exhibit ! It was very intriguing ! Unfortunately for us we gave out before we could tour much more of the museum !
Tales from the Turf exhibit was extraordinary. I stumbled into the curator's tour which was exceptional. The amount of research she put into the documentation of the items was inspired. It was not just a bunch of brown horses as a docent described it.
Great museum and staff was friendly!
We came here on a field trip for my son's 1st grade class. The employees were all super friendly and helpful, our docent was fantastic. We enjoyed it so much we came back and brought the rest of the family 3 days later!
Good collection of arts from different Centuries and cultures
This is a great museum with regularly rotating exhibits. I worked here back in 2009 and have been visiting ever since. The remodel makes me miss the museum that I grew up with but it turned out great and made room for bigger exhibits.
Very interesting fashion exhibit. Everybody super careful to follow pandemic guidelines. Great way to enjoy art and be safe.
Love it, but please talk to the workers to not stare holes in people’s eyes. I understand that their job is to make sure no one is touching the art or stealing it, but it isn’t necessary for a worker to literally watch you and look at you in the eye as you read a caption. Just today, I was looking at a painting and I looked to the left and the worker was staring right at me and didn’t care that it was obvious. It is very uncomfortable and makes me not come. Long story short, please tell them to not make the staring obvious. Ps.. the lady chaperoning the Christianity part, needs a talk, because she is very rude. Thank you.
Great place to see local art!
Get a membership. It costs very little with a big return on your investment. Art, yes, but also events and programming, lectures, music, film screenings and more. This museum is on par with the great metropolitan art museums of the world.
This was different from my usual galleries. Loved the experience.
It was a breeze to get there and the parking lot wasnt as bad as some i've dealt with in lousiville. Overall the experience was amazing, i cant speak for the value of admission because we were lucky enough to go on a day that was free admission. It is a beautiful building and worth the drive across the bridge from Indiana.
I love the Speed Museum! There are always new exhibits to see and tons of beautiful art. That staff is very friendly as well.
Beautiful space. I've had the opportunity to perform in this venue twice working with The Company Band! The newly renovated museum is really nice. I look forward to visiting again soon.
Good:
* excellent variety of works from ancient to modern
* beautiful facility
Cautions:
* navigation is a little difficult, IMO (of course, that is often a caveat with a growing facility); there is a lack of uniform signage to provide direction and, though the available maps work well per level, navigating between levels is confusing
Overall, Speed is a very nice art museum and is very worthy of both local and traveling visitors.
First visit; very engaging children's activity area. Sold reasonable priced snacks and drinks; didnt have much time in museum with 3 and 5 year old
Best fine art exbits ever!all expertly currated my Miranda Lash, Curator. And what an excellent education program for regional school teachers as well. Truly outstanding! The redo of the building is miraculous and makes this art museum a must see experience for everyone.
Very enjoyable museum. I agree with a previous review that it's a bit difficult to navigate. I missed an entire section and didn't even realize until after I left and saw another part of the second flood from the outside.
The people were friendly and helpful when we asked questions. Absolutely loved the fashioning art from paper display by Isabelle de Borchgrave. It is a must see!
I took one of their Back to Basics classes today and it was a lot of fun. Although they laughed when I suggested that they put the print I had made in the class up next to the Pollock prints as if they thought I was joking. Well, joke's on them because I submitted that picture to Google for the Speed so people will see it and think that's the kind of amazing art work the Speed houses! Then they'll go and be like, "What is all this? Who is this Picasso guy? Where's the amazing print of the unicorn, Lock Ness monster, and UFO? That's what the people REALLY want to see!"
Ah, wait, the picture has to be APPROVED even for a Google places picture?! Well, never mind then, probably.
A really interesting and well curated collection of art from many periods and countries. Wonderful to be able to see art again after such a long absence.
Was really beautiful and interesting I loved looking at all the paintings and sculptures. Was there for quite a while and still didn't see the whole musem. The staff were all friendly and very helpful
Very beautiful and interesting artwork. But living in Louisville my whole life, I was used to free admission and parking. Needless to say, I was surprised to see admission go from free to $10. Plus, you have to also pay to park.
A gem of a regional art museum, with a strong collection of -- what would you call it?-- Kentuckiana. The show featuring Louisville native son Hunter S. Thompson and his collaborator Ralph Steadman is probably over, but if it isn't you should see it. Free admission (donation encouraged) on Sundays.
Great selection of local and international art, great experience end the also have awesome rotation of special exhibitions, thanks to how well funded the museum is entrance is free on Sundays, overall a must if you are in the area and enjoy art.
In addition to the high quality and diverse temporary exhibits, the permanent art is extensive and well-displayed. Having Wiltshire Pantry provide food service at a lovely indoor/outdoor cafe space is a bonus. The biggest attraction for me, though, is the arthouse Speed Cinema. Big auditorium, excellent sound system, dedicated projectionist and outstanding film curator in Dean Otto, who brought his expertise from similar post at the Walket in Minneapolis to Louisville.
Photos posted are from the July After Hours gallery talk on the Hunter Thompson exhibit. The panel included Stephen George, left, of Louisville Public Media, Hunter's son Juan, and local poet/writing professor Ron Whitehead, right. That's Ron again with the frame.
Excellent experience! I was very impressed with their collection by the master artists such as Cezanne, Rogin, Reuben and others. Must see!
Fascinating museum worthy of several visits. Extremely knowledgeable fine art curators. Very open and spacious new addition. Would highly recommend this museum for everyone.
I love the art! Such a nice place to go and it's so relaxing on top of that and it made my day!
Amazing experience watching the Sunday films. Interactive with the director and producer. Volunteers and staff very friendly and helpful.
So so so much better after recent renovation. The addition of the cinema was a great idea, watched the RGB documentary and loved it! Space is now a much more legit art museum.
A great way to spend a rainy day!! We visit a few times a year!
Good museum not stellar but got a lot of good art and interesting thing.
Great for a smaller museum. Love the curation and staff is always nice. They hold some good events which involve the public with art and a classy social scene.
Beautiful, calm & many exhibits
We went to see the Andy Worhol exhibit and it was great! Spent the rest of our time wondering the rest of the museum and learned a lot about Kentucky's history.
Nice exhibit, however eat before you arrive. The cafe is VERY expensive and only has a few items. It was $9 for a tiny grilled cheese sandwich!
We came for the glass exhibit, but were blown away by the intricate details of the paper clothing by Isabelle de Borchgrave.
Beautiful and informative, my children loved it!
I picked up a 'carry chair' in the lower level KY gallery and found it helpful. Neither of today's special exhibits meant a thing to me. Cafe very satisfactory.
Despite the social distancing challenges staff had everything expedited to check in. The exhibits were well distanced. Staff was friendly and courteous! Wonderful experience
The basement has so many really fun things for kids! I'm so glad we visited.
Fun museum for the family.
Beautiful building filled with awesome pieces of art, but there was a mandatory $5 donation for one of the shows on Free Sunday. Why not call it a $5 admission fee? #ThatWasTheStupidestThingEver
Very interesting stuff if into sightseeing art and learning. Sundays are always free--including their films. Always a relaxing and enjoyable experience!
Love the Speed. I go there to be amazed.
Always good exhibits and the Cafe was great!
I don't understand what people love about this museum
I feel like the expectation are just so low in Louisville
Not a lot of art is in there and the galleries are whether closed or you have to pay for
I would say the best part is in the basement where you can do activities if you're into that kinda thing
The art exhibits were top notch! The kid area was a lot of fun and very different from those that I have seen elsewhere. Bravo on not being boring or repetitive!!
I attended a film at Speed Cinema. It's a great place to see documentaries, art films and little known or old treasures.
Clean and Inspiring! Enjoy!
Great place so much to look at.
Always enjoy the Speed. Some art is not for everyone but they have a wide selection of different types. I always find something I'm interested in. A lot of cool events/music.
I went to the cinema in the speed and saw the notorious rbg. The movie was fine and the air conditioning was quite chilly. I'd imagine the artifacts in the museum are just as Intriguing as the outside architecture.
Amazing experience. You could get lost in here with the amount of exhibits. I mean, I did get lost. But they provide you with a map at the beginning to help you get unlost since it's so big. Must check out.
The Speed Museum looks amazing after the remodeling. They offer lots of great exhibits and their Speed Cinema brings a lot of different film experiences to the community. I am thankful because they brought the Dekalog by Krzysztof Kieślowski to the theater when it had been remastered - watching the ten short films with a community was something I'd wanted to do since I found Dekalog and they made it a reality. The Speed Museum is a cultural gift to this community, one to cherish and visit often.
11 year old granddaughter would spend all day st ArtSparks
Wonderful experience. I went on a free Sunday so it was a little crowded, but still well worth the visit. Wonderful exhibits in a beautiful space.
Good littleart museum with a focus on some artists I'd never heard of that is local to Louisville.
Good installations of different art forms and genres. Rembrandt and Chagall all the way to Chuck Crowe's President Obama weaving. Always worth a repeat visit.
Love the Owsley Free Movie series & the Free Sundays on the main exhibit. You will see incredible films and all you have to do is walk in the door by 1 pm. The $9 rpm series is amazing, too: this is where Louisville first saw "Loving Vincent," "RBG," "Lady Bird," "Tanya," and many other breakout films, as well as classic world cinema and groundbreaking documentaries. Film curator Dean Otto travels widely to view and obtain films which are often difficult to get in their original, uncut forms--Orson Welles' rarely-seen "Chimes at Midnight" is one example. Frequently, too, special guests will come for Q&A after the films. Dolores Huerta flew up for a post-documentary session last spring, and she is in her 80s! These film series are two of Louisville's best-kept secrets.
Definitely check out the Kehinde Wiley* painting on the second floor, and the Picasso to Pollock show. Revolving shows include very well-known artists, current and historic.
*Artist chosen by President Obama to paint his presidential portrait
Beautiful art. Sundays are free until end if March. Great place to visit on a rainy sunday.
Dean is doing a fantastic job with getting 4k restored films in the cinema. I try to see them all! Latest was Yellow Submarine. I also like hearing about how the movie was restored and all the background info. Check it out!
This is my favorite place in Louisville to be.
Went on owesley sunday it was great. Parking was reasonable, museum was free, rested in the cafe after awhile and the service was great. Ran out of energy before I ran out of museum. So I need to go back and finish.
I saw the RGB movie here and it was amazing. The movie was fantastic and I love the fact that I got to see it in Louisville. Also the theater is beautiful and the speed is a wonderful resource for the city.
Very modern, spacious, and well, chock full of great classic and modern art. As a member, I've spent many days exploring the exhibits there. I love it!
Women Artists in the Impressionist Age was spectacular! Art culled from 11 countries was inspiring and beautiful!
Tea and scones in the cafe was a real lift and delightful! Well done Speed Team!
Great museum! Haven't been there in years. However it had the highest admission charge I'd ever seen at an art museum. And $5 for parking!
The Speed always has something for us. Their recent modern art exhibit was fascinating. The staff is easy to talk to and the price is right. Highly recommended.
Really beautiful museum with parking close by and lots of cool events throughout the year.
Great experience and the exhibits are displayed in a professional manner. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful.
We had an amazing time. The service was excellent and we ended up seeing so much stuff. We were presently surprised. It is super clean. The staff did an excellent job at answering our 100 questions.
Always enjoy my visits to the Speed. Between the exhibits, the Friday night events (food, music etc) and the cinema, you have a complete night out at one location. Check it out.
I thought this was going to be like cars but i was wrong i actually really enjoyed the exhibits and the different categories and periods that they have.
Really amazing place to get lost in for a few hours! Lots of beautiful art and some science stuff thrown in too. Currently it's free on sundays until March 2021!
The ,local Speed' on Market is much smaller, and more hands on
.; with exhibits like pottery,or posters. And there it s a chalkboard for patrons. This is a lovely idea, the ' satellite Speed '. Worth looking into.
They just recently reopened and it is fantastic. For the next five years, Sundays are free, making it even more entertaining. There is a huge selection. Even if you hate art, it's still pretty fun.
I went there for a meeting and didn't get a chance to look around but from what I saw it was amazing! Its bigger thsn i thought and the staff was helpful when I was looking for bathrooms. I hope I get to go back on a leisure day to explore some more.
I came as a chaperon for my Daughters High school Arts and Humanities class. It was a short visit but we had a wonderful time. We'll definitely be back as a family.
Museum is a great to spend time viewing interesting art. Highly recommended
My husband and I visited here during our honeymoon. It's a great museum with excellent exhibitions.
Some of the art we wanted to see again was on loan to other museums..
Thanks for the white rose....
I'll forever be grateful
This a great family museum. And also a single person. Lots of history. Floor displays
And Bourbon.
This museum displays a little of everything. It is worth your time. It also serves as a venue for events and is absolutely beautiful.
Outstanding. 1 St time I have since the reopening. 1st.time for my oldest grandson 11th grade. Is artistic and is a designer. Art Sparks is amazing.
The Cinema at the Speed is always showing something interesting, and I love stopping by the Cafe for a quick and delicious bite from the Wiltshire before I see a movie or tour the exhibits.
Great cinema. Speed After Dark is the best time to go. Great food and performances, plus you can tour an exhibit or two.
I would give this place five stars if it wasn't connected to a hotel restaurant. Drunk people kept galavanting past me. I mean, not the gallery's fault but it definitely ruined the atmosphere for me.
Excellent museums made stronger by the recent significant renovations. Certainly worthy of an afternoon especially with the museum currently free on Sundays.
The kids enjoyed the Art Spark section and we walked through the exhibits. I really enjoy our cultural pass this year.
Waited and watched for over 4 years. It was great to see an updated version of art. We enjoyed seeing it on Mothers day. Thanks to the donor that allowed us to do this.
Always a good art fix!! Between the rotating exhibitions as well as things in the permanent collection that move from here to there now and again, always something new or different!!
It's free on Sundays so we visited it. I would go once more, it's a very beautiful museum.
Love this place, amazing exhibits, programs, events and films and free Sunday entry.also Also a great play space for children.
Only half the building is open on certain days (Fridays?) so be sure to plan accordingly. Love the setup and felt safe regarding COVID.
One of my favorite places to visit. The rotation of art keeps things fresh, and the cinema always has something fascinating to entertain you.
Anyone visiting the Speed Art Museum must dedicate their entire day here. There is so much to look at and not enough time in the day to examine each work of art.
Amazing museum with a great atmosphere and an amazing collection. Exhibits are top notch. This is truly a gem of Louisville.
It was a great look at our recent history. I'm proud to have been apart of. Great place to take the family.
Such a Gem of our visit in Louisville! Love the art environment here!
Website needs an update. You are required to bring a vaccination card and it does not say that anywhere.
Always lovely museum, and the Supernatural Art in America exhibit was fun!
This museum was everything I wanted in an art museum and what I needed from and art museum. I highly recommend going here and I hope to visit again with my mother and my daughter soon.
Beautiful art, I'm not usually into art like that BUT it was all so interesting and easy to gst involved in what was going on. What's this? That's cool, wow, how did they..? Alot of questions and amazement!
Great museum with all kinds of cool art pieces. They also hold events and symposiums there and always a great venue.
Loved it ...Reception for U of L homecoming event alumni. Good choice. convenient.
Great exhibits and local culture (we went on a family fun day). Everyone there is helpful and thoughtful with suggestions in response to questions.
Such a fascinating place! Highly recommend for all ages!
In the Speed, Louisville has an impressive art museum. If you haven't visited the Speed, visit the Speed.
Love the art and the atmosphere.. sometimes the people can be weird.. and what's with the checking a backpack? Who's stealing art with a backpack??
Each collection is interesting and well thought out, with some true jawdroppers of pieces
Great weird museum with stuff all jumbled up together. A bit more expensive than it has to be but art is always worth it
The new redesign was great... Super collection. It's really a 1st class museum that Louisville should be proud of.
Great family fun!
Love to visit every time I’m in town. First rate museum with fantastic artwork.
Loved seeing all the beautiful art pieces. Such a fun place for a daytime date.
Great museum! Free on Sundays when we visited.
Good stuff with the museum overall, good collection. Don't care for the virture signaling apparel in the gift shop however. That does not belong.
The Speed is one of those great museums with terrific collection that no one talks about. Sundays are free and the parking on the campus is affordable
Went here frequently because it’s free for students. Best place to go in between classes on campus when the other buildings are packed.
Went for the revealing of the 3 Marys. Stayed to see several exhibits. Wonderful museum experience
Large and well curated art museum. We loved it and will definitely be back!
I went to Speed when I was in grade school in the '60s. I was amazed. I have continued to visit every few years and still love each visit.
A vision of what Louisville could be if it designed everything to be for the people that live here.
The Speed Museum team provided our classroom an experience they'll never forget. The background, the fun, the memories... Thank you from Hite Ele
Delightful display of art. Enjoyed it. I would recommend this if you are visiting.
Amazing field trip with our third grade students. Very engaging activities for the kids to take part in.
Pleasantly surprised. Excellent collection, but perhaps not as expansive as one might like.
Saw the Pollock to Picasso exhibit. Unbelievable! Favorite piece was "Place of Darkness" oil on canvas by Abraham Rattner. (1943)
Awesome time. Beautiful art. The clerk was extemely friendly and helped my daugher out with a project. Definitely recommend.
One of the most complete art museums I've ever been to. Something for every age and every type of art enthusiast.
I couldn't see everything there was so much to find, the employees were helpful and the exhibits amazing. I will go again.
A beautiful museum and a great way to spend time in Louisville. It just keeps getting better.
The museum is wonderful since the remodel. You need all day to get through it but a great experience.
Great collection of strong work.
An exceptional museum!
The Speed is WONDERFUL. We are thrilled with the new installs. This is the gallery Louisville has been waiting for. Very impressed. Highly recommended.
One of the greatest exhibits at Louisville. Always free to students! Lovely staff.
I love the Speed Art Museum! Admission is free on Sundays so, it's great for families!
Speed really understands community. They really make art attainable for anyone of any age or wealth. It's not just for old rich people. Speed is for all.
The Van Gogh presentation (Loving Vincent) was awe inspiring. I hope the Speed Museum brings it back a second time.
Showed up on a free weekend. Beautiful building with an impressive collection.
A gem of a museum in the heart of Louisville. Great permanent and temporary exhibits, free admission Sundays, and friendly staff!
Great museum, had lots of fun with the bubs
The new exhibit is awesome. Would recommend.
The UofL dance showcase was so much fun!
It's so nice having such a great art Museum in Louisville. The theater is awesome as well
Nice mid-sized museum with creative special exhibitions.
A beautiful place to visit. The collection without the special exhibitions is great. The addition of the theater is also good
Loved the Women of Impessionism exhibit.
I feel privileged to have such an incredible museum in Louisville of all places.
Phenomenal exhibits, and helpful, knowledgeable staff! A great way to spend a day with family, friends, or even in a self adventure!
Went to see the Gonzo exhibit, loved it! Then found myself spending hours looking through the rest of the exhibits.
Great exhibits. I like going with my family. Nice way to spend the day in Louisville.
The art is great but the service at the cafe is awful. If you order a latte you'll get it 10 minutes after you order it and they are extremely forgetful despite it never being busy
Such a cool space and museum. Even the parking garage is well archetected. Plus, the museum is free on Sunday.
Today, a special exhibit on Hunter S. Thompson. Where is he, now that we really need him ? Hunter would be able to properly describe that unspeakable swine, Trump.
If your in Louisville it worth checking out the speed Museum. There is something to see for anyone that enjoys art.
A really nice place to spend an Sunday afternoon. The special exhibitions are always worth the extra cost.
One of my favorite places!
Always a wonderful place to visit, movie theater was nice with comfortable seating. Nice selection of rare movies not offered anywhere else.
Great exhibits! The whole place is just gorgeous and the collection is amazing!

This is a great place to visit, especially on a rainy afternoon. Take your time. Lots to see and some are interactive.
Great place to see a variety at a reasonable price (and it’s Free in Sundays thru 2021). Also enjoy the movies they offer.
Really amazing that Louisville has such a diverse and fantastic collection of art. Saturday's are free to the public.
Literally one if my face places, I go four times a year and never tire of their exhibitions.
Worth the visit. It's always changing, and has great Kentucky history exhibits
Such a good museum. Love that there is an interactive art section.
