Reviews of Historic Arkansas Museum
Such an awesome place. You can do your own tour which is free or you can pay for a tour which is pretty cheap but make sure you're there on the hour cuz they do tours every hour on the hour I got there like 5 minutes after 3:00 and missed it so it was okay I just walked around it was nice. And certain days you would have to ask they have people dress up in the old timey clothes and have those old houses open talking about the history. They have an Indian museum a little place for children to play and a few other cool museums in there to look at old things from the 1800s it all has to do with arkansas's history though.
Everyone is so friendly and nice. They were doing a reenactment of the gold rush Era and each individual had some amazing stories to tell with lots of history behind it. I loved this place.
Such a charming historical museum!! Loved the authenticity. If you join the tour, you can walk into real historical buildings and furnitures. Museum is free and tour is 2.5 per person.
We saw galleries only which were free. The senior price for touring houses was $1.50, but we did not have enough time. They were excellent. Be sure to see the Native American one. There is also an introductory film.
This museum is a great place to bring your family to learn a little history of Arkansas. It carries a wide variety of antiques and treasures throughout Arkansas past. You can do a self guided tour or get a tour guided by the employees every hour on the hour. The entire staff was extremely helpful and knowledgable. I highly recommend stopping by and checking this great museum out.
Took tour; guide could be a little more polished but he did okay.
This is a good museum to come to on the weekends with kids. I do not suggest coming during the week. The weekend is when they do all of the reenactment and the forgery. Overall I had an okay time. It was raining when I went so I got a little wet. There is also very little information and things to actually see and do during the week.
This is actually a great museum. It’s got two sections. The first is an 1800’s village that you can take guided tours of for a small fee ($1.50), complete with a print shop, pub and some other cabins and houses. The second section is the main museum itself (free), with tons of exhibits, ranging from artifacts from the daily life of early Arkansans, Native American artifacts, Civil War artifacts, early exploration artifacts, and more. Definitely a good stop when you’re in historic downtown.
New to Arkansas and visited on a field trip. The entire time we spent was worth so much more than we paid. The staff, who are dressed to match their timeframe and stories was my favorite part! Great for all ages. Very informative and tons of fun. We will be going back!
Great tour guide & such interesting history. Also a very nice gallery of contemporary paintings.
Decent size museum. Now it's free, not much crowd, so you will not be disturbed.
Good native american and racist exhibits.
One good thing I learned from the museum, how people in south enslaved people after civil war and proud of it 😉🤖
Great little history lesson about Little Rock. They have done great at keeping the homes and businesses in great condition. Look forward to going back on a 3rd Sat when they have people doing everyday living reenactments.
Lark is an awesome employee! Thanks for the fun time. Cool place for sure. Also the group of men at the Blacksmith were so kind and knowledgeable about the skill. They showed us lots of tools they made and whatnot. Super neat place! This museum is well loved, well taken care of, and everyone we met was extremely pleasant. Thank y’all for the enjoyable time!
The staff were friendly, approachable and informative, the admission is free but if you want a guided tour it is $2:50 for adults and I would recommend it, there are galleries with artefacts and modern pieces, the knife display was very interesting, outside is a selection of historical/period buildings from the 1800's, I particularly enjoyed the printers building, the gardens have some interesting plants including a cotton plant, I would definitely recommend a visit...
Really interesting exhibits with good information. Also enjoyed the gift shop with lots of local artisans crafts.
I'm glad I went to this museum and I'm especially glad that it's free. I must have come at a bad time. There were really only two active exhibits inside as they were in the middle of changing displays. I also got there too late for a guided tour of the buildings, although I meandered on my own and even called in the awkward telephone guide system. I'm sure on a different visit I would have a much more enriching experience.
Loved the art work and well priced historical tour. Wish I would have visited sooner.
It was very good, it is on the site of the original little rock settlement with some of the original buildings.
Hello There,
My name is Teresa. My family and I visited on the 28th of December,2021. Mr . Leon was our tour guide. He absolutely showed great enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge about the museum history. The artifacts he kindly explained and answered our questions. I have visited many state museums. I would have to say this one really exceeded my expectations. My kids and husband were very impressed. That's hard to do with three teenagers. We would love to return when enactment are up and running. All of the employees were great. Thanks for sharing your history with us.
Mrs. Cager
Had a great time at the territorial fair! We will be back during regular hours to explore everything the museum has to offer.
Lots of interesting displays of historical events that shaped up Arkansas. Great place.
Very interesting and the guide was exceptional!! Really nice and taught us so many things about Arkansas history!!
I always enjoy the exhibits here and the gift shop provides some great local products! you will not be disappointed!
Runaway apprentices!
Take the tour! Amy was our guide and the tour was full of great history, funny stories and interesting revelations on some common phrases. Do you know where the word "toaster" comes from?
Check the website to see if they will have any reinactors on site. That was a great surprise!
Such a beautiful place with lots of information for adults and kids alike.
Great learning experience for the kids. Some of the people who we thought were tour guides of certain houses didn't offer up much info unless asked.
I love art. This was the first museum I've been to in Little Rock and it was super dope. Historic Arkansas Museum is home to an historic city block including the oldest building in Little Rock, an 1850s Farmstead, galleries of Arkansas Made art and history ranging from indigenous Arkansans to contemporary artists and artisans. Visit us for unique programming and events
The grounds were amazing! It was so interesting, educational, and the guide was friendly and funny. I love the native American exhibit and seeing local art. I love that the gift shop has local items as well. Great for tourists and locals, family fun for all ages
Solid Museum but there was too much Injun history. The Arkansas toothpicks were my favorite part.
Absolutely loved this museum! It's free to tour the gallery and they have guided tours for a small fee. The gift shop has lots of interesting little items. I picked up a very tiny mason jar of honey and a bat magnet. The artwork and artifacts here are pretty tame so its a good place for kids. I highly recommend checking it out.
This is an amazing place to learn about history. They had beautiful quilts. Gorgeous hand made knives and a section on American Indians. You can choose to pay $2.50 to see historical buildings. One that is said to be oldest in Little Rock. Excellent experience. Don't hesitate to go.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this museum. It includes a free portion (its internal galleries) and a paid portion (its external preserved half-block of Little Rock historical buildings). The external portion is only $2.50, and I believe that is more than reasonable. Some of the buildings are only viewable from the outside, but several are open for you to go inside and explore. Those buildings are staffed with reenactors, which makes your viewing more fun. The internal galleries include a permanent exhibit on Native American tribes and temporary exhibits. On the day I went, there was an excellent cross stitch sampler exhibit, art from different Arkansan counties, and a truly lovely exhibit from the collection of an art professor and his wife. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this museum and will go back in the future.
Overall, my experience was good. There is an historical village that you can tour, but I did not go. I believe I was too early for a tour. While walking through the museum I actually felt like I was walking through an art museum. There were a few exhibits for Arkansas history but they were rather small. The museum itself is very small, inside. I was looking for more of a "history of" rather than a "display of art". The exhibit for Arkansas blade smith was sort of neat. I went upstairs to the Native American exhibit and it was sort of a let down. I enjoy reading about and viewing Native American history and wished they had done more. Overall, it was worth a stop to check things out.
Great atmosphere and was a great experience with small kids! The employees were so nice and great at talking to and had so much patience with my two kids (4 and 2 years old). They could answer every question we threw their way and you could tell they have a real passion for the place and history.
I love visiting Historic Arkansas. I love the shop. I stopped in yesterday just for the stout mustard. The workers are so fun and full of great info about the buildings and people from the time. I always learn so much from them! I esp loved watching one of them cooking an authentic meal in the kitchen. That was an absolute delight!!
The historic buildings have been beautifully preserved and the interpreters make the experience great for kids. The price of admission is well worth it. The gallery is small, but nice and also worth a look since admission to it is free. The knife collection, in particular, is interesting.
We just visited this lovely museum, and what a pleasure it was!The guided tour of the buildings, for a VERY nominal fee ($1.50 for seniors) was truly exceptional. Casey was our docent, and he was amazing! He is passionate about what he does, he knows such a lot of the regional history, and he really brings a lot of knowledge to the subject. Thanks very much Casey.Another real highlight was the living history guide who was portraying Tabby, a person of history from the appropriate time era. The woman was truly exceptional....you really believed her. She is a gifted re-enactor, making history come alive. Don't miss this gem of a museum!
Love this place. When my grandchildren was small, would take them to the different events. They loved it as well... great for kids of all ages. Always has interesting things about history.
I learned so many things about history of AR.
The museum is amazing. It is very well worth visiting. Quilts from early 1800s, knife collection, history of Quapaw and Caddo indians, along with some of the earliest buildings in Little Rock. The staff reenacts characters from the time in telling the history of the buildings. If you are interested in early history of the area, you will not be disappointed.
Nice, little museum. Staffed by helpful, friendly people.
Allergy suffers beware, they didn't have a cat that patrols the museum. However, it usually avoids guests and stays out of sight.
Such fun, historic time. The people that dress up are informative and friendly. Awesome information.
I've been here many times as s child and now as a teacher. I just realized during my last field trip that the houses are original. Like a little hamlet in time smack dab in the middle of the city. Amazing! The tour guides are always kind to our students and knowledgeable about Arkansas history.
Nice little place. There is 3 buildings to go thru, and a period actor that gives a little talk. Just $2.50 for an adult. Hop on the trolley passing by. $2 for an all day pass. Hear some history and ask questions. Cars go by about every 20 mins
Not really a whole lot to see, I'd recommend maritime and national guard museum instead or the MacArthur museum.
However, the Historic museum does have some amazing knives and swords on display, when I visited Hands on History was closed and I've heard that's basically half the reason to visit it. So, contact them, make sure the hands on history is open before you go there I'd say.
Not for everyone but I enjoyed it. Excellent knife exhibits. I loved the mid-late 1800's handwritten letters. What a step back in time. The native exhibits are worth the visit in and of itself.
The museum was pretty cool you go on a tour through some houses from the 19th century and there are actors in each house that tell you the history of the area and you get a glimpse of how they lived there lives and what one of the first printing presses looked like. The most interesting part of the museum in my opinion is the huge collection of native american artifacts.
Very informative. They had period actors who really knew their history about the place. The gift shop has a lot of really neat stuff. Their galleries were full of interesting things.
Neat historic buildings.
Not a museum like you'd normally think of one. While there is a large building with exhibits (historic and art exhibits), the real jewels are the historic buildings that have been picked up and moved to the museum grounds. There's basically a little historic block. The museum regularly has free public events where re-enactors will show you how people use to use the buildings and tools to go about life. Its honestly one of Little Rock's treasures.
This urban museum of Arkansas' history (including the actual building in which the state legislature first met--a pub with sleeping rooms--is a gem for those interested in American history of the 1820s and 1830s. The galleries are home to seasonal exhibits on the Bowie knife (in some circles called the "Arkansas Toothpick," and other interests from the state's history will satisfy your culture-hunger and give you a unique glimpse into one of America's charming small states.
Arkansas should be proud of this little Museum. it provides a great look back into the history of Arkansas and open my eyes to a number of things that I did not understand well before. Very much worth the time learning about the history of Arkansas and the people that live there I recommend it highly..
First of all it is free and you cant beat that price! Also, there are always several events and it's great for kids. There is a trolley pick up next to museum so you can double the fun.
Great exhibits! And they don't hide the less palatable aspects of our history, but neither do they celebrate them. Good balance, hard to achieve in practice. Awesome job!
Had a great time. We took a tour of the houses and watched a great film and interesting gift shop, and art museum along with the Bowie knife exhibit. Overall a great trip.😃 …
I am a history buff, so love this place. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable and the exhibits are displayed very well and contain good historic information.
Wonderful place to learn about early territorial AR with the outside restored buildings. Also, the museum is quite interesting, with not only Arkansas historical items, but also some excellent artwork from the past 100 years.
Nice museum. Indoor section is free, out buildings require a small donation. Really good display of Bowie knives I'm first floor gallery.
Loved it just wish they at least had the doora to the buildings open so we could see inside them. Had fun though!
They have a suprisingly sized gallery that is quite varied. It's easy to spend a whole day here. From the buildings that are outside and the art inside it's a great place.
The staff are highly qualified and the exhibits are exquisit. The highlight of the experience were the collection of highly crafted knives from local bladesmiths.
The blacksmithing demonstration across the street from the main museum was great!
The 2nd Friday art night events they host are so much fun! They ask for donations but offer free wine and finger food!
You will always learn something on the tours of the older construction, and the attached museum has incredible exhibits and connections rotating through. A true gem.
This is great for adults, but could use more for kids. It was set up very well, was very informative, and incredibly affordable. In fact, if you go on Sunday, it's free.
Very nice museum. Great things for the kids, a nice gift shop featuring a beaucoup of Arkansas made stuff. Lots of really interesting exhibits.
Visited the museum as I was passing through Little Rock and was amazed by the quality of the exhibits and the information! Would absolutely go again!!
Incredible! Awesome exhibits, and the grounds tours are too affordable not to go
The museum itself is wonderful, but the tour of the restored builds was spectacular. Don't miss it.
Lots of fun, beautiful pieces of art
Amazing displays. Free of charge, great way to explore and learn about Arkansas. Super friendly staff.
I love to check out the new exhibit each time I visit. I get something Arkansas Made in the Gift Shop, too.
It is a really nice museum... Take the time to have a guided tour of the grounds and by all means visit the blacksmith shop!
Very interesting. A lot of beautiful Christmas decorations and activities for children. Great historical information given.
Pretty cool exhibits, I'd go again if I were in the area
Wonderful place to visit and learn. Great Christmas celebration. Bad parking tho. Be careful where you park.
Terrific place. Don't miss 2nd Friday art walk. Great bands every month.
It has a few art exhibits and some historic houses. I think the tours are on the hour.
Beautiful place with lots of art and historic exhibits. This is one of our favorite spots in LR.
Always good exhibitions. Small, easy to see in and hour or so.
Being able to get up and touch the historic log cabins was just amazing, it's a really great set up.
A Little Rock gem! Go experience a step back in time with cabins and reenactments all in the middle of downtown with restaurants and the River Market within a couple blocks.
The place is huge with some awesome art. Very cultural and I appreciate it!
Small but big variety of items, galleries, and a great tour of grounds. Great price.
Love this place! Tree Docs did a great work with the trees.
definitely worth going.
Electronic displays were not working. Had they been working it would likely have greatly improved the experience.
Very kid friendly and updated to modern times. Full of information.
This historic preservation museum is a rare opportunity to dip into early American--and Arkansas--life and culture!
We took the grandkids and they enjoyed it very much. We will go back again
Good place but there were alot of rude people. The staff was awesome.
What a great educational facility. Visiting is just like taking a trip back in time.
Nice little spot! I came in from Michigan! Really cool galleries!
Although I have no particular interest in quilts or knives, I found those displays to be quite interesting!
This place is awesome and filled with Arkansas history. Can't beat the price anywhere.
😉
Love it. …
Nice place to visit. Wish we had time to take the tour.
Guided tour of historic buildings was excellent! Museum exhibits are outstanding!
The museum is excellent, the staff are terrific.
Smithsonian quality exhibits and free admission
It's part of the river front so if that is wonderful this has to be included in order to make it all happen
Always a good time. Great art and displays. Free
Boring.
However, we didn't get to tour the houses, so my rating is just based on the inside exhibits.
A lot of history and it's free! Great place to visit as a tourist!
I loved this place as a child. I have passed that love on to my children and grandchildren.
Staff was helpful. Their native American history is very interesting.
A great state to visit and so nice and green. People are friendly as well.
