Reviews of Portland Museum
This is an amazing little museum and a great resource for the community. If you are traveling on I-64 and want a dose of art, history and river culture, stop here. We learned so much about the history of Portland, the Ohio River and contemporary life. Great for kids! Kudos to the staff! It's a free museum, but it's always great to donate.
We went today, a gloomy rainy day but it was extremely nice inside. It was our first time going and we will be back. Everything was nice and neat. Beautiful building and exhibits. We enjoyed the local history and the African art. The historian there was super kind to us and very informative. I can't wait to go again on a beautiful day where we can enjoy the outdoor part as well.
Wonderful museum. Portland is an interesting neighborhood worthy of studying. Friendly staff.
If you like small regional museums , this is a gem. It has a nice history of the area. They will be adding a children's museum in the future.
What a great place! I went to the exhibit from the Smithsonian on voting and democracy. The Portland Musuem did a beautiful job with the displays. This FREE museum is easy to get to and has a beautiful outdoor space/courtyard in the historic building. Easy on-street parking is free too.
1. Great historical overview.
2. Loved learning about Mary M. Miller, 1st Female Steamboat captain.
3. Unique Italian style house.
4. Check out the back yard garden. Very beautiful.
5. 2nd Saturday of month. Free entrance when I attended.
6. Replica of Steamboats very fascinating.
7. Famous football player from Portland interesting to learn about. Ask about.
8. They’re closing for 2 months to remodel. Call ahead to make sure open.
Enjoyed our visit to the Portland Museum on the Louisville Cultural Pass. Very in-depth history of Portland and how it related to the Ohio River and Louisville. There are many fascinating stories to be heard here. The old house which is part of the museum is also rich with history. Well worth spending a couple of hours or more here. Don't miss the newsreels of the 1936 flood, either!
Great little museum. Portland is rich in history and was the largest city until the canal was built around the Falls of the Ohio. Portland is full of pride and has great potential to be a booming neighborhood. It is the largest neighborhood in Louisville.
It's simply wonderful! Everyone in Louisville should visit and learn
the REAL history of our city. Excellent displays and write-ups. VERY
nice, knowledgeable and helpful people. This place is a hidden jewel.
Go on a week-day and have lunch at The Table just down the street.
(Restaurant open Mon.-Fri., 11am-3:00. Food is great. A "pay as you
go" effort that has been a resounding success!) pw
Interesting place for anyone interested in local history!!
Great institution serving its neighborhood, the city and river buffs everywhere. It’s current hosting of Wes Modes’ the Servret History Of American River People is another great example of their creative, progressive programming. Go Portland Museum!
Everyone living in Louisville should visit this museum. What a history lesson, all school children should take a field trip there.
What the Portland museum has for show is reasonably intriguing. They are working on adding more exhibits. As a native Louisvillain, I learned a few things i was previously unaware of
It's a small place but good information to you as to get to know about the Portland. Staff here is really good and they helped us to know more about the Portland area and it's history.
Wonderful little museum! Never knew Portland’s history was so fascinating!
Nice place to learn Port and neighborhood history .. They need volunteers to keep the doors open.. I grew up in Portland even though I moved away in still a Portland girl at heart..
It's a good place to learn about Portland neighborhood. Educational, and the workers are polite. Portland is what built this city.
The only museum west of the 9th st corridor in downtown Louisville. A wealth of historical knowledge about origins of Portland/Louisville.
It was interesting. Your tour guide was lights and sounds and it kept my little one interested. My favorite was the animated Mary Miller.
Great hospitality. We enjoyed on the art fair tour, loved printing press experience. Wish it was open on the weekends!
Charming. But the collection is not particularly extensive. Loved the info on Shippingport, but even that could have been explored further.
Small, but very informative museum about local history. I learned a lot!
