Reviews of USS Indianapolis National Memorial
I wanted to see this war memorial ever since I heard of it. It was beautiful. It's located next to a canal and the memorial is surprisingly interesting learning about this ship and it's crew. Definitely check it out.😊 …
An emotionally moving memorial site, imo. A highly condensed summary of the main narrative inscription reads:
"THE WORLD'S FIRST OPERATIONAL ATOMIC BOMB WAS DELIVERED BY THE U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS TO THE ISLAND OF TINIAN ON 26 JULY 1945... THEN... ON 30 JULY 1945 SHE WAS HIT BY TWO TORPEDOES... OF THE 1196 ABOARD, ABOUT 900 MADE IT INTO THE WATER IN THE TWELVE MINUTES BEFORE SHE SANK... SHARK ATTACKS BEGAN WITH SUNRISE OF THE FIRST DAY AND CONTINUED UNTIL THE MEN WERE PHYSICALLY REMOVED FROM THE WATER... ALMOST FIVE DAYS LATER... THE SURVIVORS WERE ACCIDENTALLY DISCOVERED... OF THE 900 MADE IT INTO THE WATER ONLY 317 REMAINED ALIVE. AFTER ALMOST FIVE DAYS OF CONSTANT SHARK ATTACKS, STARVATION, TERRIBLE THIRST, SUFFERING FROM EXPOSURE AND THEIR WOUNDS THE MEN OF THE INDIANAPOLIS WERE AT LAST RESCUED FROM THE SEA."
Beautiful monument to the crew of the USS Indianapolis. Tasteful and moving to read the story of the ship. Beyond the story in Quint's JAWS film.
I love military history. Seeing the monument for the USS Indianapolis was truly humbling. To learn a brief history of the ship made the journey even better. To know the USS Indianapolis was the flag ship of the 5th fleet and earned 10 Battle Stars is something I will not forget. Seeing the ships bell is at the Indiana War memorial was a treat not expected.
It's a beautiful park right off the canal. My girlfriend and I were visiting from San Diego and found it was a wonderful place to stroll through. There is a zoo however it wasn't open when we pass by. Maybe it was a little early in the morning. But the canal and river area are both very beautiful.
Well represented memorial with pic of ship and its history. A LONG list of names who sacrificed for our country on its last voyage when it was sunk and an accounting of this event engraved at the memorial. I visited this memorial after listening to an outstanding account of this ships last voyage on Audible entitled “Indianapolis”. What a story these men have to tell and few have heard!
There’s a playground just next to memorial or walk down the man-made canal.
A beautiful monument. My great grandfather died on this ship. Nearby is a beautiful playground.
These pictures are actually of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Includes the gorgeous and beautiful Canal Walk. Include some pictures from the state fair that's held in Indianapolis right outside of Indianapolis, Indiana. The city, and area businesses, along with the entire Indianapolis, Indiana Community have come together and made a beautiful, welcoming, and unique downtown area. They have horse-drawn carriage, to peddling beer bars smiley. :-) :-)
This is a beautiful but small memorial. A memory that should not be forgotten. The story is very powerful. Take the time while visiting the Canal and remember.
AGENT!! CAR SALER…. HOME SALER… IPHONES SALER….. GOLD SALER!!
Small but important memorial to the last naval vessel lost during WWII. The memorial tells the story of the USS Indianapolis, including its accomplishments prior to its sinking. It's very tasteful, and in a great location near the canal.
Definitely worth paying your respects to the men who endured so much. If you don't know the story, look it up, or better yet visit the monument on the Canal Walk.
Poignant memorial. Beautiful space as well.
Beautiful setting, beautiful memorial! I think it's wonderful that it has the crewmembers names so that visitors can etch the names of their family or friends.
Wonderful place to spend time with family and friends.
Very respectful and informative Memorial. A must see when in Indianapolis.
The USS National memorial was super clean and very well enlightened. I spend some good time there.
Always appreciate monuments to those who served.
My first time and it was very enjoyable.
Beautiful how the built it along with the canal walk
Moving. Very informative. Just WOW, to all the heroes of the Indy.
A beautiful historical monument to the men lost on the USN Indianapolis. Next to beautiful canal walk and a playground for older kids.
Very interesting! Has great information on the story and events!
A beautiful trail to walk/bike/ride/anything on! It is apparent that a lot of people use this trail but it never feels crowded. Makes for a great Sunday walking location.
Great meeting place in the city for outdoor adventure with friends. There's always someone around when I'm there. Latenight it gets dark in places, lighting is limited. Sidewalk has plenty of light.
Such a beautiful place to take a break while walking.
Great views really peaceful park area on the canal. Great if you want to stop while walking the canal. 2 gyms and a stop for pokemon as well.
Beautiful park with a new park for kids. Safe place to hang out with the family during the day. Restaurants on the canal walk and a cute gelato shop.
A very well done memorial tribute in an area with plenty of foot traffic attention. A true gem so we the free citizens of this country never forget the unselfish sacrifices of so many.
Beautiful memorial. Glad to see the history being kept alive. On a beautiful canal walk great little stop if you're already in the area
A small memorial along the canal, it tells the very detailed story of the last few days of the USS Indianapolis and her crew. Definitely worth a minute of your time.
Beautiful tribute of all who have fallen
Beautiful honor monument. Park there is fantastic for kids. A great spot to sit or picnic at
Memorial honoring those surviving and lost to a crucial turn in WWII.
A tastefully modest marker commemorating the US Navy heavy cruiser named after the Circle City. Three panels detail the ships' history from its initial launch, and pre-War assignments through WWII and its final mission, delivering the first atomic weapon to the island of Tinian. Just 4 days later, the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine. The memorial focuses on the historical effect of the mission on ending the war so the observer must continue elsewhere to research and learn 879 of the 1196 man crew which were lost in the sinking. The terrible story of the conditions those sailors endured has been recounted in film and books - but their sacrifice and that of their their shipmates through the pre-war years is a well-earned point of pride and remembrance for the city. The memorial is well-kept and well-visited.
Relatives of Richard Eugene Houck, survivor. RIP Uncle Gene... Gone but not forgotten!
This memorial is for all the soldiers whom perished and survived the sinking of the fastest heavy cruiser in the fleet at the time...among those who perished was my grandfather...
Great memories of the military service members who served are listed on this memorial panels. Enjoy your time looking at this memorial with your family and friends.
Honored memorial for the namesake ship of the City. It's location on the canal is perfect for stopping buy to pay homage to those who lost their lives for valiantly serving their country all those years ago.
This memorial is a wonderful tribute to the last crew to sail on the U.S.S. Indianapolis. The surrounding area on the canal is lovely and peaceful.
Love the canal, best pace to chill, be that someone, and learn about some history, where else can you do that! And that's not the half, rent boats, thrikes, get some grub to
Great open space on the canal. Our fitness groups meet up there and practice during the warm months.
Great place to walk but I just went there over the weekend and there were 2 shootings from teens, walk during the day or if you must at night have a partner with
