Reviews of Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site
Awesome historical attraction, well, for those of us who love Indiana and US history. Nice, modern interpretation center that is located next to the well maintained house of the "President of the Underground Railroad." The museum tour guide did a fabulous job of presenting the house and the story of Levi and Catherine Coffin!
Such a great place to learn the truth of history! So very interesting. Next door is a wonderful experience as well.
Please go & see this place it's awesome plus our tour guide was very knowledgeable & friendly.
Extremely well done. The hour long tour was very historical and informative. It included a 10-12 minute video to start and then the guide took us, a small group of about 10, on a tour through the house and barn next to the visitor center.
Really nice visitor’s center with displays, stories, and movie. The tour was great with lots of history and interesting stories. Amazing to walk in the same place of the freedom seekers and abolitionists. Anyone who gives it a bad review just doesn’t respect the history.
Interesting bit of history and neat to tour the house. Plan ahead for the tour since the solo staff member will lock up the museum while they're giving the 30min tour
We went on a crazy hot day. This made the house crazy hot. But the last step in the house was the kitchen and that made it all worth it! Seriously, the sweat was pouring down all parts of me. My sunscreen was in my eyes. Joanna Hahn (I have her name written down but not in front of me and hope I'm remembering it correctly) was leading us through and just full of information. This was equally very old museum house and modern, interactive and informative. Great experience.
Very informative. The tour guide was very helpful and well educated about the history of the house and the history of the Coffins.
Awesome experience, there are two buildings. The tall white building is the museum that contains information on slavery in Indiana /Ohio area. Then there is a bit about the Coffins. The red building shows the Coffin house and how they lived helping slaves escape. Loved the tour, if you are a history fan then this is a treasure to see.
Great site displaying history of Underground Railroad site in Indiana- very well done- accessible without overwhelming for kids - great look into history as well as architecture & lifestyle of the time period.
Great tour (by appointment) of a historic place
This family and this home played a truly vital role in the success of the Underground Railroad. I just wish I could have come away with an emotional connection to the Coffin family. Our guide was obviously knowledgeable but also seemed to hold tight to scripted information about household items displayed rather than the people involved.
Amazing history of Indiana everyone should visit. The tours are intimate and cover the whole history of the Coffin family while they lived here in Indiana. Their home served as one of the main stops in the Underground Railroad.
Walking through history was informative and very revealing about our past in a good way. Our docent was knowledgeable and encouraged questions.
Note the picture of the ropes and the Wooden Key on the bed. The ropes were the mattress on the beds in 1800s. Every night the Wooden Key was placed against the knob which are called a "bed bugs". Frequently fingers would get caught in the key when the mattress ropes were tighten hence the expression "don't the bedbugs bite."
It was a wonderful experience for our son's 3rd grade field trip!! The tour guides were very knowledgeable and energetic to teach us along the experience!!!
What great joy to learn about the "President and first Lady" of the underground railroad. This needs to be a must stop site on your adventures!
Educational. The guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Everyone should get this experience.
Great spot to learn about local Indiana history. The home is well preserved and the accompanying museum building is modern and light. Highly recommend visiting this spot.
Nice museum. Very friendly staff, young lady gave an excellent tour.
I feel blessed to share with my grandsons true information about this important time in our history.
This house belonged to a family of heroes. In the 1830's, Levi and Catherine Coffin helped over 2,000 freedom-seekers (people fleeing slavery) on their way to Canada and other places where they could live free. The visitors' center does a great job of interpreting the amazing story of what was known as the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad, as well as the stories of the people who passed through it on their way to freedom. It's a very moving and inspiring place. We picked up a copy of Levi Coffin's memoirs in the gift shop, and it's a fascinating and powerful read. Beth, who was our guide for the house tour, did a wonderful job, really bringing the story to life. This was the highlight of our trip to eastern Indiana.
We came too late for their tour but there was a lot of information and displays.
This is a little known gem! The history taught here through fabulous displays and information is top notch. Go and experience it, you will be glad you did.
Such an amazing historical museum. Make sure you sign up for tours...we came on a spur of the moment and didn't get to tour the home...but the museum has more than enough to satisfy the history buff.
What a gem for those of us in East Central Indiana. So interesting and well done. I'm embarrassed that it took a visit from our grand children to get us there. The historic impact of the Coffin's and the commitment they had to such a dangerous and scary mission should challenge us all to be better people. Our whole family was truly inspired.
Extremely well designed and managed museum. Very knowledgeable guides. Displays were appropriate and engaging for all ages in spite of the challenging topic. Highly recommend.
Excellent tour. Fascinating and important history.
A very good educational experience, if a bit long for young kids attention spans.
What a hidden gem in indiana. What an amazing place. To see a house from 1839 and to see all the little things that were built to aide in levis work with the underground railroad was amazing. Plus all the historical artifacts. The museum is really nice also. Well worth the trip and experience.
This is a wonderful place for a historical perspective of the Underground Railroad from a northern perspective. It offers a fantastic tour of this nearly 200 year old house built specifically for helping individuals making the travel from the South to freedom in Canada. Interactive museum exhibits help learners get a grasp on what it would be like be held in slavery and understand the horrible act that it was. Tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable and courteous. Highly recommend for all interested in learning about major historical events.
The guide was very informative! Great part of history lesson
This is one of the most amazing historical sites I have ever visited. The curation is impeccable, and each tour I've taken has been full of engaging and fascinating information. Come, bring the kids, often. These are the stories we must remember and retell. #NeverForget
Great historic site with a wonderful story to tell!
A fun educational experience. We had a great tour guide and everyone there was so pleasant and helpful! Highly recommend!
My daughter and I had a wonderful visit at the Levi and Catharine Coffin Home. We received a guided tour of the home with some great info and history of the Underground Railroad. We also got to spend some time the interactive center that is located next door to the house. A great piece of Indiana history.
I recommend the candle light tour!
My grandchildrens great grandma Penny was a tour guide. A person can learn alot just walking in.
A great learning experience and a great picture of Indiana history! Very knowledgeable tour guide. A definite must see if you are nearby; worth the drive if you are a bit farther away!
If you want to learn the real history of the under ground railroad this is a must visit, tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the house and the under ground railroad best tour we have had in a long time.
Had a great time. Tour was very informative.
This place is a must-see. I reccomend for ages 7-77! (You do have to be able to walk up and down narrow stairs in the Coffin House, so 77 might be pushing it a little!) Take a tour by one of the very passionate and knowledgable volunteer tour guides. The lady who did our 4th grade tour had been doing it 40 years. Indiana made a very good decision in the 1960s to not let this place get torn down and a gas station built in its place! It's very humbling to stand on the very floors that a Freedom Seeker laid on. I was amazed at the courage of both the Coffins and the Freedom Seekers.
The interpretive center next door was nice for restrooms, movie, gift shop, and a display upstairs, but the real treasure is the Coffin House.
Tour was exceptional.
A great look at this historical period of time, with the staff being very knowledgeable and the artifacts and home being very well preserved and cared for. You can feel a sense of the lives affected as you take the guided tour.
If you are interested in history of the Underground Railroad, this is one of the last stops enslaved Africans rested on the way further North. Levi Coffin's house shown here is in Winchester Indiana. The next stop was Ohio then on to Canada.
Absolutely love this place our history is so very important to our culture! It very informative iand detailed I plan to return one again!
The Catherine and Levi Coffin house was has been maintained beautifully. My docent has been there for decades. She had a wealth of knowledge. I'm so glad this history has been preserved. It's a tribute to the brave freedom seekers who saught refuge there.
Our guide was great and a wealth of knowledge. She saw us drive up and greeted us in the parking lot SO we would not miss the tour she was starting..
The stairs are a little tight in the house but it was still really neat to hear the stories of a community that helped 1000s of people escape.
The story of Levi Coffin is inspiring. Makes me proud to be a Hoosier. We have gone many times. Love it every time. Something very special about the place. Took 10 friends with us this time
I attended a fantastic teacher workshop hosted by very professional staff and outstanding expert guest presenters.
A fun experience into the past.
Considered the Grand Central Station of the underground railroad, the Coffin house has a significant place in American history. The new visitors center next door give a film and a bunch of displays to provide background and context for the house tour.
This is an interesting part of American history. Many people risked everything to help enslaved people and this shares part of that story. Also, it is a very well preserved house and a beautiful new interpretive center.
Levi Coffin is part of my Heritage and I am very proud that my family helped to free the Slaves that SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SLAVES OR ANY SLAVERY EVER ANYWHERE! My family was Quakers and did not believe in slavery thank God that they didn't. Because I think that I would not be proud of my heritage if they would have been slave keeper's!
God bless all!
Great biography and history, a must visit location. Our guide, he did an awesome storytelling.
My kids loved it. We went a week ago and they are still talking about it! A little piece of advice though go on a cool breezy day!
The fact is that I have lived & worked in the area all my life and this is one of the best sites to visit in the state of Indiana. I think the name of the town was once Newport.
It's a great place to learn local and U.S. history, and the tour guides are very polite and knowledge able
Incredible piece of history. Tour guide was great. Passionate & knowledgeable.
It was a very interesting place to visit and we love history!
A must see!! Worth the trip! Great examples of people living with a purpose!
Great educational experience! Tour was extremely informative and guide was extremely knowledgeable!
Great tour!
The tour and new center we're top notch! What a great way to learn about the underground railroad.
Saw the sign and had to turn around! The building was closed but the outside was beautifully kept up...I will return with my class :)
Great knowledgeable tour guides and an excellent new museum next door.
Great tour and great educational expierience in history of the underground rail road.
Very knowledgeable tour staff, and a first rate interpretive center.
One of the coolest places I went to for a field trip when I was a boy and a significant piece of American history and Freedom...!!!
I enjoyed going here to learn about Levi Coffin and Catherine Coffin. I went here because they are some of my ancestors!
Awesome place. I learned a lot. Great place to take kids. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Magnificent, in every way. History in a house. Tour guide knew her stuff.

Educational, under construction to better serve visitors. Must see if you are in Wayne County Indiana
Educational enjoyable visit with lovely kind tour guides.
Amazing museum! Excellent education and info.
Had volunteered for almost 12 years until the State took over. Price has raised dramatically.
Such a neat story! Tour the home and the new Interpretive Center!
Town wide garage sales, food vendors, lots of locally made items for sale. Something for everyone!!
Not as many vendors in 2018 as usual, seamed like only half. It was very disappointing.
