Reviews of San Jacinto Museum of History
Jim Seifried
What a great place and impressive monument. You must watch the movie about the history of this epic battle of Texas Independence. Take a walk around and drive through the battle field. Head on over to we’re the Texas army stood strong under the beautiful Oak trees near the water.
Mike Herriman
We visited here on Saturday 6/25, I was amazed that there was not more traffic at the museum or the Battleground. Granted it was very hot out, but the museum has A/C. the staff was very friendly and helpful, there are a lot of displays to see and a 40 minute movie to watch that gives you a good overview of the historical significance of the site. We thoroughly enjoyed this visit, I would highly recommend, you can also stop at the nearby Monument Inn for a great lunch, and make a day of it.
Michelle
Full of history and a great view from the observation floor. We enjoyed spending time here. The monument seems much bigger in person. I recommend walking up close around the monument to really appreciate it. There is a museum on the bottom floor with many artifacts to see. We went on a Sunday and it wasn't very busy. There are plenty of significant places to visit at this battleground.
Travis Deck
Any Native Texan should visit at least once ! I grew up going on field trips here and had to come reminisce as an adult. Very cool to
See the battlefield and the artifacts from the Texas revolution. Very peaceful and serene on the grounds. Took the elevator up and got the Birds Eye view of the channel and Houston beyond. We went during the week and were the only ones present and had the whole place to ourselves. $10 for pp for all the attractions which is great. Go check it out for some good insight into Texas History.

Last visited 3-18-2022.
The staff here are kind! There is a 20 minute video and then walk through the exhibits. There are handicap accessible public restrooms inside the monument and in the picnic area across from the battleship. There are multiple picnic areas throughout the park.
David Phillips
The museum had a 30 minute movie of early Texas History and the San Jacinto battle. Exhibits were very insightful. Great trip with kids for Texas History in school. Ours were excited to learn their great, great , great, grandfather fought at the battle and drove Santa Anna off the battlefield in a medical wagon after he was captured. We combined a week with Goliad, Gonzales, The Alamo, Bob Bullock Museum, State Capital, Governor's Mansion, and Sam Houston Monument in Huntsville.
Nancy Rodriguez
It's a lovely Monument. It's weird that the surrounding area is nothing but refineries. Also they should make a walking trail with benches around the lake where the ship used to be. Make it similar to the Monument in Washington DC. Quick note you only pay if you go inside the Monument. That's where the museum is. Otherwise you can walk around the premises and sit on the picnic tables for a quick lunch.
Kimberly Jenkins
What a marvelously beautiful place. I had no idea it was there, but wow it took my breath away! We did a drive out there with Chevy Boys of Houston and it was such a fabulous ride! The weather was gorgeous and the scenery magnificent! Truly a hidden gem.
Karl Breneisen
The San Jacinto monument almost seems out of place... unless you imagine the surrounding hallowed battle ground as it was in 1836. If you are not familiar with the gritty industrial area East of Houston be prepared that this is not Gettysburg, Pearl Harbor or Arlington, however the monument and battlefield is equally important to our nations history. Be sure to sit for the film. Also there is a wonderful 3 mile walking trail through the marsh, and a nearby cemetery - and do arm yourselves with mosquito defenses.
Jonathan Greenstein
Great place of reflection and history of Texas. An amazing monument and museum of the early days of Texas through the revolution and into modern day.
The monument itself is reminiscent of the Washington Monument but features a distinctive Texas star atop it making it just a tad taller (it is Texas after all).
The museum features countless artifacts from early human history in the area through the revolution and into modern day. Interpretive signs and displays explain the item and significance to the history.
A great movie is included in the price of admission and details the battle and people for which the monument stands.
Handicapped accessible lot and building. Unfortunately at the time of our visit the elevator was out of service and we were unable to venture to the top of the monument, so we will plan another trip just for that.

A great place off Texas history and independence. Unfortunately they say the elevator to the observation deck is down until sometime in October 2021. The museum and movie were very informative about how Texas became a nation.
Eng K
Love this park.... it is huge, windy and beautiful park that I ever visit in Houston. There also a museum and a battleship in the park too....
Kenneth Beaver
Amazing spot to dive into our American History. This was the location that defined Texas as Texas and not Mexico.
Tonja Hall
Inside has changed and remodeling is going on....again but a movie has been added to explain more for those who didn't take Texas History in school. We took our 6yr old and he enjoyed it like I did growing up. Places to sit makes it nice if needed.
Natalie Hartman
The scenery is beautiful!! We didn't get to explore the museum or the other side across the street because we came just before closing, but we did get to explore the outside with our dog. Such a beautiful monument!
Laura
It was a very nice place and portrayed some of Texas history beautifully. We were too tired to go up in the monument today but we are definitely coming back. There was some awesome history portrayed on the monument and it was beautifully done, especially taking into account the year it was erected. It's a master piece in the craftsmanship. We also explored the battle grounds and was able to walk close to the battleship as well. They are not allowing tours on the battleship, although they once did. It was still stunning to be that close to one, although I've seen it before many years ago, it was still an experience to see it again even without being to go on board. In the park area is also a lot of history and park places to have small events. Pretty sure I seen someone grilling today. Definitely going back.
Austin Rice
Never even knew this existed until my family wanted to go. History lovers. It has an awesome little museum inside. The elevator to the top look out was unfortunately under maintenance.
They have a grounds tour that takes you around in a vehicle with a tour guide and explains the significance of the battle ground and where the camp sites were during the battles.
Oksana Wright
Small museum, very focused, easy to follow exhibits. There liked the van tour of the surrounding property and the movie explaining the historic events. Oh, the diorama is awesome!
Cody P
The monument is huge and breathtaking! I only wish it was open when we were in town on a Monday. What we did as an alternative to visiting the museum inside was that we explored the nature walk behind the monument that leads to certain areas where Mexican camps were set up before and during the battle. Even if you don't care about the history of the locations you're walking (why are you here again?), the scenery of the nature walk was just as equally enjoyable.
Krishna Chaitanya Anumolu
It's a great place to visit. Especially if you are a history buff. The top floor is so high you could directly see the battle ship. But as of when this review is posted the battleship tours are cancelled and can only be seen from outside. This place has a lot of Texas history. There is a lone star at the top of the monument.
Lazlo Arcadia
The site was awesome! At nearly 500ft high the view from the top of the Monument is truly breath taking. The gift shop is well stocked with various books about the history of the area and the museum is full of historical artifacts. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the area.
You can see the battleship clearly from the top of the tower. The battleship itself you can go see (currently, it is slated to be moved at some point to a new location) however it is no longer open to the public so you can't go inside.
Dave Hoppe
Good museum, very focused on the local battles. As such, it's small but that paired with the surrounding area and the monument makes it worth it.
Michelle Ray
Small museum and gift shop are available to walk through. There are no bathrooms, only outhouses across the parking lot. The elevator to the top was out of order....the only access to the top. 😮💨 2 school buses full of chatty 4th graders were also visiting, so the area was loud, busy, and children running in and out of the building. I got ran into 3 times! Almost toppled on some stairs, trying to return from the outhouses. Terrible experience for us. I'd recommend calling in advance to ensure schools are not having a field trip and that the elevator is operational. The movie was informative but extremely outdated! Very one-sided. The narrator is famous but died aboit 20 years ago. No discounts for seniors or retired military.
Farid Mahmoodi
Very beautiful and calm place ,Very scary jungles, Beautiful water and ships and wonderful place for clicking natural photos
Robert Z.
If you love or, at least, are interested in Texas history, check this place out. There are some wonderful artifacts in the museum from some of Texas's founding fathers.
The grounds have ample parking with bathrooms on the Texan and Mexican camp sides.
Built in the 30s, the obelisk is a reminder of its time and of the time it memorialize.
At the top of the monument, the view is incredible but lacks a 360 degree view and is such a small room.
This place may need some modern upgrades with better technological attractions, but even with its 1950's vibe, the San Jacinto Museum of History informs the public of a historical event and mildly entertains.
Peter Mancini
A very important battle, the very small compared to any other battle of the significance of this one. You are on the spot where brutal dictator was captured and the independence of Texas was created. Lots of interesting objects from the battle and from that history are enshrined there. The film they show you is excellent.
Pamela Pfeiffer
Wonderful place! We've been here lots of times & it's always a great time. The staff was very nice & friendly and the whole place was spotless - very clean. We love the observation floor. It is just a spectacular view out of every window.
Right now, because of COVID, the coin-operated binoculars on the observation floor are not in use. My husband thought ahead & brought our binoculars from home. Also, the Penny Press machines have been removed.
The movie they offer is very good. If you have time, catch it.
Wheelchair & walker friendly. Also, not too overwhelming or over-stimulating for our Autistic son. I think he enjoyed himself today.
C J Goins
Interesting field trip to the monument and battleground. View from top is impressive. It has been years since I visited museum and drove the battleground. Picnic areas are quiet and peaceful. Say what you will about the history but hopefully learn something before you open your mouth.
Ken Schwart
1st and foremost, I helps keep alive the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for what they believed, fought and died for at this battledield location. It is a very well put together memorial and reflection pool. It reminds me of the Washington monument in DC except this on is taller. You can take the the elevator up to the observation deck and see a lot of the Houston channel, currently you can also see the USS Texas and etc.
It has a nice museum on the lower floor and some nice displays. There is quite a bit of information that was engraved into the outside walls surrounding the entire lower circumference of the monument.
The facility also offers van tours of the area as well.
Brian Crone
Great place to brush up on your Texas history! The museum is very clean and everyone is very friendly. The sky was so clear, we could see for 30 miles or so all around from the top of the monument!
Vanessa Rodriguez
The architect was amazing, but it looks like the Washington monument in D.C. with the long pond in front of it. It's not big its a 1 hour walk though including the 25 minute movie of the history. I was intrigued and do want to know more of the Texas history. The hour is to look and read about the very short info. And how the architecture was built. Is it really worth the price of admission no not really $10 worth yes, being the gift shop like all gift shops are over priced for no reason.
Sarah Slack
Top wasn't opened
$10 adults
$6 kids
Theater and museum bottom part was only open and gift shop. A nice walk out to water and let kids run around. Can take ferry over to it for more of experience
Hussain Hassan
I came here with my friend this past Sunday and had a wonderful time. The staff members were welcoming, and I really enjoyed the view from the observation deck. The binoculars there are not in use due to COVID, but feel free to bring your own if you'd like. We also watched a 35-minute historical documentary that was very informational.
Mikhail Zasolotskiy
Good place to walk. There is no ship!
Jenny Zhang
This was the second time when we visited here. We went on a Sat and it wasn't very busy. Even if we can not get in the observation floor due to the elevator out of order, there are plenty of significant places to visit here, such as battleground and trail. We really enjoyed spending time here and will be back again.
Aimee Lim
The view on the top is amazing . You will learn a lot of American history. This place is highly recommended for school children. We enjoyed visiting the battleship. Kind of neat place. The staff are friend and knowledgeable. Well maintained building. Price is very reasonable.
Marco Chapa
Very humbling and historic place. It is literally the place where Texas was born. Nice museum inside the monument with lots of information about the creation of the monument and about the historic battle that took place there. Definitely a must see for anyone visiting the Houston area.
Olivia Allen
Very nice monument and museum. We couldn't tour the battleship due to time but drove around the area and looked at markers showing what happened during the battle. The dioramas were my favorite part. The woman in the elevator was such a sweetheart and gavr us information on how many floors and such.
Aboriginal Indigenous Media
I was overwhelmed to see this Grand Monument of Texas History. Never knew such a great piece of history existed only 55 minutes away from my home. The Museum does offer Military discount and the drive was congested.
Alyan khan
Nice place to visit but too expensive for what you get
Amy Vaughn
I get to now bring my children to a place I loved as a kid. Elevator is still a bit scary, there is a small fee. Museum has beautiful displays of Texas history. Gift shop is fun too.
Samoul Murray
That's is the place for tourists and local travelers as well. Bring here your family and friends. Learn about the Texas. Be enjoyed by the trip. Everything here is wonderful. Nothing to worry about. The staff that works there will help you out with any questions.
Don L
This is a must see after going to the Alamo!
I love history. The monument museum is great. Many stories and artifacts.
There is also a souvenir shop.
With the lights I am thinking night time pictures of this place will be great too.
You can also see the battleship Texas from here.
Ruben Kan
Nice little museum at the base of the monument. Many artifacts are viewable free of charge. They have a theater showing films for a little extra. Going up the monument in the elevator costs $6. Very educational for anyone interested in Texas history.
Alfredo E. Ramírez González
Visiting this place was a great experience. The stuff exposed in the museum are very interesting. You can learn a lot about Texas history. Going up to the "lookout" is a good experience too, you can see the ships, the fields, etc. We went on Sunday and Fortunately it was not too crowded. if you are going to visit this place, don't forget to go with about 1-2 hours if you are that kind of person that like to read everything, because the museum closes at 6pm no matter what.
Ana N
Interesting museum about the characters who participated in the battle of San Jacinto. It seems that it has a good view from the top but we couldn't go up in the elevator of the monolith because it was under repair.
Marsha Calhoun
It was cool, but the elevator was out. There was also a field trip so it was hard to really stop and look at things. It was interesting.
Sarah Sidell
Out of the way historic site. Not very many people, beautiful grounds.
Brian Baker
Actually quite a detailed museum on one of the greatest battles of the U.S., where over 25% of the current territory the U.S. was won. Plenty of exhibits on both the Mexican and American sides, including art, models, and weaponry. Plus, the monument itself is an impressive building worthy of even the Washington D.C. area.
lilly rose benz
The museum was smelling very bad(moisture), you feel It when you step in, I highly recommend a mask.
There were no limitation for visitor's number, while the space is small.A hole school's class was justeling with visitors.
The elevator was out of work, which is a master piece of the hole visit to have a panoramic view!
Frederick The Great II
Excellent monument and the sites are beautiful as well. Good food to go along with the experience. Highly recommended!
Ryley Thompson
Excellent museum. Very detailed exhibits with interesting artifacts covering Texas independence. I think the most interesting thing is that I had no idea this place existed in the first place.
They currently have a paid exhibit with interesting media and other cool documents.
Mel A. P.
I remember coming here as a kid. I recently had guest from South Africa and decided it might be of interest to them. There was enough information for non-Texans and persons form out side of the USA to learn a good bit about Texas early days.
There are several options for visitors, including the ground level musem (part of which is free). On a nice day one can walk the grounds to visit some of the landmarks or maybe just take a moment to sit and enjoy next to the reflecting pool.
David Palladino
Very impressed, spacious well kept grounds. Historic Texan/ US monument! Elevator ride to top, museum below. Free parking...shaded..picnic areas .
Collins Farms
Unfortunately we were only able to go when the museum was closed but the park was open so we were able to look at the monument and all of the area around.
L wilder
Just the outside of the monument alone is impressive. The museum is full of info and displays. On my visit, the elevator was broke, so I was only able to see the ground floor and experience the movie in their theater.
Wil Banchs
Only open Wednesday through Sunday 0900-1600. Nicely kept, nice walk with an available 3 mile hike that is optional.
Cyn Grisham
It's awesome inspiring. The elevator was down, but....well worth the drive if you visit the battleship Texas and cemetary.
Mike Montenegro
This place was an awesome place to take a homeschooler for field trip. We love Texas history and there is alot of cool info here
Jennalee Kocurek
I love love love the Texas monument I’ve actually walked around it quite a few times and read the inscriptions on the sides of the monument the grounds are beautiful. Thank you to the parks maintenance and grounds keepers for keeping the place so beautiful and clean I just hope it stays this way for future generations.
JENIVIE
Beautiful and substantial. However, the top was closed until October (as far as I could remember). Regardless, I learned a lot about history and the employees were all friendly and respectful.
Daniel Jeans
Great visit even though the elevator wasn't in operation due to maintenance. Neat exhibits and superb documentary movie.
Charles Lau
The historical significance of this place cannot be underestimated. Thanks to the victory of the San Jacinto battle, Texas gained its independence from Mexico. This led to the Mexican-American war where the USA won one-third of its present area (from Texas to California) from Mexico. Even though I'm a foreign visitor, I was moved by the impact of this decisive battle. The interesting museum and the excellent 35 minute film explain the history of Texas and the San Jacinto battle in great details and are highly recommended. The observation deck offers great view of the historical battleground and the surrounding waterways. (Unfortunately most of the areas around the battleground are occupied by petrochemical plants and industries.) The place is accessible by car only and there is no public transport. There is ample free parking around the monument.
Just Sayin'
Awesome place to visit! Museum, gift shop and elevator straight to the top with stunning views
J Referente
This museum is a nice side trip from Galveston. There's a lot of information about Texas history here. You can see the vast area surrounding the museum atop the tower.
Allyson
Really cool place to come visit and learn about the history. I had never been over to this area and there is a lot of cool spots all around here. It would be a nice spot to come have a picnic!
Anahi Soto
History always interesting. 6dll to go in the elevator that takes you five hundred plus ft in the tower. There's a gift shop, displays with belongings and facts about the war. The tower itself amazing, there's facts engraved on the tower, which were individually carved...must go...
Kevin Jackson
This place is amazing. They are very organized. I do have to say thw hurt shop is a little pricy but their museum and exhibits are awesome. There is only one elevator but it only takes 40 seconds to get to the top. The staff is very nice. I enjoyed my visit and hope to come again!
Angela Taylor
Museum we have never visited. Will be going back. It rained while we were there so we couldn't walk around the grounds.
Samantha Lockwood
Such a hidden gem. I know it’s taller than the Washington monument, but due to its location, you would never really know it’s there unless you looked. Absolutely gorgeous monument. Can you really call yourself a Texas if you haven’t been?
David Plutowski
I had no idea this monument was here in this area of Texas. It's about 500 ft tall. It's unusual because it's in a very industrial area... not the prettiest drive up to it but nice when u get there
Jenny Ott
A great place to learn not only about the battle that took place here but the history of Texas as a whole. I found the exhibits about the civil wat especially moving and informative
Julie Hall
I've been to the monument, but only on the latest visit did I go into the museum and up to the top....wow, what a view! We also had the privilege of listening to the museum director speak about the history of the monument and some of the interesting facts and trivia. Texas history is so flavorful! So many people don't know about all the stuff inside the museum...I highly recommend it.
Carla Flores
Loved the history of this place. And the staffing was nice. And going to the top and getting to see everything around from nearly 500 ft above is pretty awesome.
Rebecca Loa
An okay place if you're bored, or if you have a huge interest in Texas history. I would skip the "movie" and just go up the elevator, they show the exact same thing up there.
Nicholas Oinonen
Why does the pride of every Texan stand erect on guard so high up in the Texas sky? Why does the nine banded armadillo cross the road to die? Cuz Texas that's why! San Jacinto Monument where even gigantically tall or well endowed men can take a pee. Seriously, the only thing taller than the Washington Monument or, better yet, the San Jacinto Monument are the urinals at the San Jacinto Monument. Plus, excellent views and smooshed pennies. Well done Texas, well done.
John Sullivan
Nice place to visit on a breezy sunny day. Amazing how quiet the park is considering the location. Plenty of places to park around the grounds. That includes picnic areas in the battlefield.
Jimmy Allen
This monument is huge. I was amazed at how tall it is. It can be seen from any high spot in La Porte, which isn't easy to fine. There isn't a lot to do and see in La Porte. I recommend you stay in Galveston and just make La Porte a day trip. The USS Texas is just across the street from the Monument and Juan Seguin Historic Park is close by. The grounds are really pretty. There were lots of families on the day I was there. I was there, mainly, to take pictures which I'll post here.
Gavin Taylor
Great place to expand your knowledge of Texas history. When we went the elevator was out of service and the battleahip was out fie repair so it was a bit of a let down.
kim brochu
Very knowledgeable staff and super friendly!
Colleen Howell
This was incredible! I loved reading the inscriptions in each side of this San Jacinto museum and monument! You need to come see this! Wow, so beautiful!
Kendra Brown
Great experience! The movie was perfect for kids to take in the history. The elevator to the top is a must do!
JOSEPH LEONGUERRERO
An amazing view from the top. Well worth it if you have the time. Also go and visit the USS
TEXAS.
Yourmustachman
Very inspirational to be standing on, or near the battlefield were Texas independence was won! The battleship is awesome and the museum and movie were great. The monument itself is massive and the elevator ride to the top is a little sketchy, but my daughter and I made it! I give it two thumbs everyone should take the kids at least once ! FirstLineNutrition
Atheendra S
Very nice place for a 2-3 hour visit. Informative museum and the views from the top of the monument are amazing- can see the ship channel and all the refining facilities near the Buffalo bayou. There are also some short trails in the area.
William Johnson
This is really fun if you have some time to spare. It is very historical and had some great places to take pictures.
John Goebel
Monument has a Museum inside Explaining the Battle and History of Houston. Elevator inside will take you to Top for Fee. Fun for Family and just to Visit.
Barbetta Freeman S
My kids enjoyed the history lesson and being able to see and touch something that old and giant made their day!
Eliza W.
It was nice to learn about Texas history. They also have an observation deck with a cool view.
Kimberly Landry
The monument was closed the day we went but it was a beautiful site. Lots of history here.
Edward Prosienski
Amazing Facts about this little known but Hugh battle that helped to form America as we know it todsy.
DESH DEEPAK DIXIT
This museum is located beneath the monument. The museum ticket includes observation deck.
JW Washington
Required trip and adventure for every Texan and history lover!
The place is well done. We were able to attend special exhibit detailing Mexican -American War. Well done with great period pieces telling the story.
Steve T. Gove
Love Texas History! We love visiting all the places involved with the rich history of Texas.
J B
Great place to take your kids to show them some State history. Go to the top of the monument. Beautiful views.
Tiffany Hicks
Took my girls for a Texas History day, they loved it, and we are planning on going again.
Danny Wallace
Fantastic exhibitions, paintings and artefacts from the battle and many personal effects from those who fought it and made Texas what it is today.
The museum sits directly under the monument, take a ride to the top and see the amazing views. Only given 4 stars due to the disappointing room at the top of the monument.
Kendall Robinson
Unfortunately, we did not get to go up in the elevator, but I recommend you take the van tour
Erin Watson
Very fun place to visit and learn about the history of this area. Not exactly the best place to take younger children, but my 5 and 6 year olds still had a good time.
George Sn
San Jacinto Battleground is a historical place to visit. The museum and Herzstein Library are located inside the base of the San Jacinto Monument.
Jason Brown
Wasn't super impressed with how it has been maintained over the years. This is the birthplace of Texas and it is soooo under funded!!!
Bill Anz
Expensive elevator ride. Cost my family of four $22 just to ride to the top for an average view. If it wasn't for the view of the Texas it would have been a complete waste. If you're hoping to see the ship bring your own binoculars or a good 35mm with zoom/telephoto lenses otherwise it's a bit underwhelming. We paid the same amount to actually tour the ship which was FAR more worth it.
Ben Masters
Excellent museum! I consider myself an amateur history buff and learn quite a few things on just the free tour! Well worth the trip to learn more about this awesome state!
Majk- Boris Jednacak
Awesome Beautiful there it was very much impressful to visit the Top of the Monument and the View was just amazing 😍😎💪 …
Elias Moreno
It is a great place to walk off the meal from the Monument Inn.
K W (HollywoodHTX)
Well curated, with many personal items, letters and histories. Observation deck provides expansive views.
Hec Lo
Very educational and nice place to visit, wish the elevator would of worked on my visit.
Noone Youknow
It had tons of information we stopped on our way to Galveston BUT the elevator was down for construction and that really threw off the whole fun!I won't put too many pictures to not kill your experience but I will say entrance is 10 dollars and it comes a short informational film.
Rahul Nagar
Awesome place..
Having theatre, where story behind texas freedom well explained 👍🏻
Monument is huge and well maintained …
Raymond Ureste
Great place to visit and learn about our Texas history.
Allstar Ambassador (Houston Insider)
Great exhibits on display. $6. Gets you 2 top of the San Jacinto monument standing 563 ft. View all three of Houston's skylines on a clear day.
Joe Quinonez
I've heard the history before but it still makes you proud of Texas history. You can go there after eating at Monument Inn.
Katrin Kinderknecht
It was a nice place. There's a museum inside but I didn't visit it. You can also use the elevator to the top of the building.
Glenn Sharp
Four stars only because of the lack of vision this entrusted with this seem to have. The monument and Battleship and area grounds are well worth knowing the history about and seeing.
Sid Foto
Open 7 days a week the museum is home to one of the largest collection of Texas art, artifacts and history.
Special treasures from the Mexican Texas, the Texas revolution , and the republic of Texas can be found here.
Paul Ladd
What a magnificent museum and collection of Texas history and artifacts. Every time I go, I spend hours looking at the treasures and reading about them. Any fan of history, especially Texas history should make this a must visit. The monument and grounds speak for themselves. It's unlike anything else outside of visiting the monuments in DC, but San Jacinto is awe inspiring.
george hinkal
Magnificent structure. Well presented history. Helpful staff. No crowd!
stanzy sam
Great place to know the history of US. For a ticket price, you can take the elevator to the top floor.
Peter Schönefeld
An attraction somewhat besides the beaten path. That means there's not a ton going on in terms of visitors, making for a very relaxed experience. There's also ample parking space. Now to the monument and park itself: A rather well-made exhibition about a part of American history that, at least in Europe, it almost unknown, and a historic place and large park area that make for a welcome change to the usual in the Houston area. The USS Texas, a WWI-era battleship, is close by, even though it is currently closed for maintenance. I enjoyed the exhibition of historic Texas flags right near the monument.
Everything is a bit old, though, or you could say: the exhibition breathes the air of the olden days :) Also, the movie shown in the museum was very... patriotic, even for US standards.
L G (Lizzie)
just did outside the monument
Jacqueline Parchem
If you love Texas history or want to learn it this is THE place to do it! It has been one of my favorite places since I was just a little kid.
Brad Schaider
Texas history worth visiting. Though the observation deck was not much to speak of.
Valentin Coronado
Great historic site to visit and refresh your Texas history.

Theater "movie" was very good. Artifacts in the museum couldn't impress me.
lisa bird
The bottom museum is free, as is the outside. It does cost money to ride the elevator to the top. But wow what a view! Well worth $12.
Wes Ogilvie
The history in this area is worth the stop. The Lynchburg Ferry is nearby, which is historical in itself. Then there's the battlefield where Texas won its independence from Mexico. The grave markers and historical markers give a huge insight to the battle -- and how what's now industrial Harris County was once the site of a monumental battle.
The museum itself is interesting. While the museum gives a good overview of the Texas revolution and Texas history, it's surprisingly light on the actual battle that occurred there. The current exhibit on the construction of the museum and monument is a real treat giving a great deal of history on the New Deal era project.
Unfortunately, the tower and elevator were closed when I visited, so it bears a return trip to see the view.
Billy Butler
Looking for something cheep and fun? Climb aboard the old elevator and look at all Houston has to offer.
All jokes aside, this is fun to come out and see. It is in the middle of nowhere but it has a charm to it.
Tommy T Truong
Vey nice, peaceful and quiet ❤️👍 …
Blake G
Great place to be reminded of our presious Texas history. "Come and Take It".
Bobby R
Awesome place to visit. Especially if a person has never been there.
Going back to explore thr grounds more. Lots to see.
Only thing that was a let down is that the elevator is broken down and couldn't go to the top to the observation deck. Will do that later though.
Ruby Palacios
Even tho it was closed due to Covid, the monument was beautiful. My daughter loved it. Wanted to know more about our Texas history.
Dennis Pohle
Museum with nice mix of artifacts and signage on Texas history from native people to 1900’s. Majority of items relate to Spanish and Alamo time period to independence. 35 minute film on San Jacinto battle prelude, battle and after effects is well done. Impressive monument.
Brandy Galloway
A worthwhile experience. The elevator was down when we visited a week ago but apparently you can take it to the top.of the monument for an incredible view. The USS Texas is on the same property.
Meanchey Abi
I have been here several times and still enjoying. This place is like the Battle of Yorktown for Texans that was fighting for independence. This place is rich with Texas history. Near by is the Texas Battleship.
Raul Escobar Escobar
A great place to celebrate any events .
The food is amazing and the service as well!
Antonio Florit
Really nice views from the top, worth the visit. The price of an adult ticket is 6$.
Rhonda Hiser
Another Texas History Museum that is in danger of being forgotten. It has an amazing history in it's self, but the reason it stands is more amazing! The elevator wasn't working the day we went, but have gone before and it provides a view of the battleground where Texas won it's independence from Mexico, and the surrounding area. If you live in, or visit, Texas take the time to visit this historic treasure. There is also a beautiful historical research library inside the Monument. Please call ahead and set a free appointment to visit or do research in the library. An adult ticket to the museum was $12, but it helps maintain the monument.
Daniel Perales
Nice tower and view. They person on the elevator didn’t know too much info about the tower so we had to look it up! But was humble enough to say the truth!
Bagus Sudiro
Awesome museum, loved the exhibit and the 498 ft elevator ride to the viewing area.
Tina LK Ogle
Walked around the walking trail there without mosquitoes repellent was not good choice hehe.
Bring one if you want to go to their walking trail.
H Otte
This is a great little museum! There is so much info and the movie they have is very well done, easy to follow but detailed. I will recommend this to all visitors of Houston.
Pablo Monreal P
I liked it because it is Historical, but the place was under lots of maintenance issues. If trails were fully open and all mechanics operational then definitely 5 stars
Eliza Diamond
Interesting to see how and why this was made and the people who made it possible through history.
Diane Griffin
This was the first time I ever went to the top of the monument. Because of Covid, our family had the whole place to ourselves.
Kenneth Ventura
Great place to learn and see an important part of Texas history. Museum has a great collection of displays how the battle took place and the key players.
I also like they had a great section on how the monument went from an idea to reality. The monument is great and I would definitely save time to take a ride up to the top observation deck.
The grounds are well kept with nice markers identifying moments in the battle. Staff was great and very helpful. Plan to spend a couple hours to really get a good sense of this monument.
Sandra Burgler
Wonderful place! Full of history and beautiful surroundings.
Brittany Aragon
As "new" Texans, my kids and I loved checking this out!
Billy Martinez
Send it. First I've been here and loved it. Only 12 ton15 dollars you can see the top of the tower.
JONATHAN CEN
Very historic museum. Let students understand the modern history of the United States.
Chibea Lee
Fantastic museum. The whole area is steeped in history, including the land around the museum where the battle took place. There's also a marsh walk trail, fishing area and the Battleship Texas within walking distance.
Ana Selarom
Really nice place If you want to know about little more about history...
Zoltan Wilson
Loved this place. Museum is really cool and I enjoyed the exhibit on the construction of the monument. Very cool.
Kaye Queen
Nice to visit and see where history really happened
Joey Carreon
If you like history, you will love this place.
David Simmons
Take a trip back in time and learn about Texas history! Go to the top and check out the view!
Julia
Friendly staff and history here, the walk down the stairs was fun😁 48 flights of stairs because of the storm that suddenly blew in but the staff kept us safe and sound. …
Sue Laprise
Wow La Porte! This entire place needs a facelift 🥲 broken elevator for years!!! The beautiful old theater looks nice but the movie was all messed up. The museum followed no obvious historical order BUT had some amazing artifacts lost in boring displays. Y’all might want to plan a trip to Washington on the Brazos and check out what a good museum looks like. Good news was only$5 per person. However, even though the museum was aged and the grounds weren’t well cared for the advantage of walking where Sam Houston and Santa Anna walked was amazing.
Darren Mosier
12 ft taller than the Washington Monument, the San Jacinto monument is something to go see. Built in 1936. There is a very fun restaurant close by called monument hill and the Battleship Texas is right there as well
Robert Aylor
Beautiful views, needs more people explaining things. Wanted to learn more but not many people working there and those that were there are just to sell tickets and run the elevator
Carissa & Coal
Came for a 4th grade field trip. Video was very informative. Great place for a picnic
Jennifer Bullard
Beautiful monument. Informative exhibits. Great place to visit with your family.
Tia Tolson
The monument is really impressive. Good low-cost educational and also somewhat exciting excursion. The film is well produced and edited and presents a side of Texas history I never knew. It was pretty fascinating. The artifacts are awesome too. Its not a large museum. It's just enough. It was pretty cool to be able to go up to the observation deck. If anything. We took a large group of kids(61 to be exact) on a rainy day and they were extremely patient with us. If anything, I would recommend outdoor seating, but I also understand why they don't do that. It's a historical monument which should be reverenced more than a park or picnic grounds. The scenery on the way is, of course, the bread and butter of the Houston economy- oil refineries. Not picturesque, but the truth is, it forces you to remember this part of the backbone of our nations economic prosperity, so...The actual monument grounds are gorgeous and the view is amazing. We enjoyed the trip there. I recommend it. Plan to spend 2-3 hours here if you see the film, read about some of the artifacts, go up, and visit the gift shop.
Alfonso Mendoza
It's was Awesome that for Building the Monument ThXs U ...🤗✌😁 …
Jessica Blevins
Was a beautiful place to go and view with the family. And an amazing elevator lady I can't recall her name but she was fabulous!
Robert Pierce Jr
Amazing part of history. Short film was cool. Come and Take it! 1836! The monument looks to be the same size as the Washington Monument.
Kenneth Sparks
A great place to visit. History of the birth of Texas is carved in the limestone and in the artifacts on display. The names of the heroes of San Jacinto are memorialized in the bronze plaques on the walls in the theater. Dont miss the view from the tower. What a sight! A great history lesson for kids and loads to see nearby.
Brandi Rockett
Elevator was broken & battleship was closed when we went. It was nice to see outside but definitely wouldn’t pay to go inside the museum.
LC Williams
There wasn't much to do while visiting. The movie was very enjoyable however I think I would have enjoyed it better if there was a interactive experience.
Aditya A
The San Jacinto Monument is a 567.31-foot-high (172.92-meter) column located on the Houston Ship Channel in unincorporated Harris County, Texas, about 16 miles due east of downtown Houston. The monument is topped with a 220-ton star that commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The monument, constructed between 1936 and 1939 and dedicated on April 21, 1939, is the world's tallest masonry column and is part of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. By comparison, the Washington Monument is 554.612 feet (169.046 m) tall, which is the tallest stone monument in the world. The column is an octagonal shaft topped with a 34-foot (10 m) Lone Star – the symbol of Texas. Visitors can take an elevator to the monument's observation deck for a view of Houston and the Battleship Texas.
Karen Moss
Very educational for anyone wanting to know about Texas history. The view from the top of the monument is quite nice. You can see a lot of Houston Bay area and a whole lot of oil storage and refineries. If oil ever fails that will take away most if not all of Houston's industry. (Biden will ruin Texas)
Robert ČEP
Nice view to Houston Bay and historical place for Houstonian people.
Sandi Wilson
Being a native Texan I love everything about our history. The view from the top is breathtaking. The movie is spectacular & well presented & the displays are phenomenal. Everyone who works there is very friendly & knowledgeable. It represents the major turning point in our history. Take the school age kids so they can learn how it really was.
Matt Rody
Love this place! The staff was very friendly and I loved the observation room!
James Hannah
This site would have earned a higher score if the elevator had been in service. If you plan to see the view from the top, call before you go. Otherwise, the video and displays are really good.
Jess Clark
You gotta get yourself here! To my shame I have lived in Houston all my life and have never been before writing this. Take your time, watch the movie, do the trails, and then finish at the monumental inn. Great for history buffs, first timers and it's air conditioned. Susceptible to bayou weather and conditions. Consider this when choosing foot wear.
Laura Frizzell
It was nice to see again. Hadn't been there since I was a child.
Gary Payne
If your a native Texan you just have to visit certain sites and now this historical beautiful site is off my bucket list. GOD BLESS TEXAS, TEXAS FOREVER
Dixie Luten
My family has been coming here since way before I was born
Rod Stephens
Was great to spend some time with our boys where we could sneak in some history without them noticing.
Andy Sirianni
A really cool place, that sadly i didn't know much about until we get there. Lots of good history and you can take most of it in with a quick stop.
A great and quick ride to the top to look over the harbor and also a couple of smaller exhibits down at ground level. I'm not sure if there was a wheel chair accessible ramp thought o get up to the main doors.
James Liburd
The kids and I learned alot about some of the folks who contributed in the history of Texas.
Mark Ogden
Wow, great place to visit, bigger than Washington Monument!
Rosemary Ciletti
What a great little museum! So much to read about the history of Texas, the battle of San Jacinto, and the monument its housed in! The 30-min movie was really great and definitely worth the watch!
Stephen Binckley
My son and I went and were delighted with our experience. Using the maps and trails and recent experience he gained in Texas history, it was the right time to take him. As an native Texan, and as typically very proud of it, I always enjoy coming here.
Joel ALF
I like going to the top of the building and great views up there
Steven Wauson
Get there early they would not allow in after 1730. Will have to return at a later date.
Andrea Mays
Even though I went through Texas history in school, actually going to places like this really drive home the importance of the sacrifices our forefathers made. Texas parks and wildlife department have done a marvelous job in the management of this property, presentation of the facts, an outstanding display of artifacts, pictures and paintings, period clothing and tools ... these are all on display inside the museum on the bottom floor of the monument. There is even a 3+ mile path you can walk to retrace the different battleground and significant moments
Tim Grier
Lots of Texas history. Wonderful place to visit.
Antony Wu
The museum provides plenty of historical information as well as artifacts. The construction of the monument was detailed in the museum as well. You can also take an elevator ride all the way to the observation deck. The admission is not free but it is still worth the money.
Mark Trautmann
I wish we would have had more time to spend here. If you have any interest whatsoever in Texas history this is a must see. This is the location where Texas won it's independence. The museum here will provide you with a couple hours of relevant historical backstory to the people and places that made Texas what it is today. For a Texas lover and history freak, it doesn't get much better than this.
Chris Abbott
1st time back since the 70's on middle school field trip. I love history and Texas history even more. Too bad we are loosing the Battleship Texas.
Durk Reinsma
What I could see was nice. Wasn't able to get inside because it was closed that day
But the grounds are very well kept. I'm not from here but was nice enough to read the history on the walls .
Jesse Travels
An impressive monument. Free museum inside with hundreds of artifacts. Very informative. Beautiful setting... Great place to learn more about Texas history! Awesome place to go to do some sightseeing lots of wildlife and birds to photograph hiking trail is extremely overgrown with all sorts of stuff. Watch where you step!
Troy Suza
It's a great spot to show the history of Texas. It's very clean and a/c is blasting, the monument is very Awe inspiring but I can't help but feel it just needs something else there to get more people coming or to make it all around amazing, maybe some tours or recreations of the war or another monument or something.
François Picard
Became a dusty place. The view upstairs is beautiful but the explanation minimum (but interesting), the tv doesn’t work. Downstairs there are missing paintings. The movie is a bit out of date. The 6 dollars per children is too much. The store is out of date. That important historical place deserves better.
Dario Chavez
The San Jacinto Monument is another great place to visit or bring friends and family from out of town. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite part was the observation deck atop the obelisk, it was well worth the small fee. Once on top, one can see nice views of the Houston Ship Channel and the area around. On a clear day the Fred Hartman Bridge are visible as well. I've been a history buff for a long time, visiting the park and monument are like seeing a bit of history. I definitely recommend that you make the time to visit.
Myron Martin
Remember the Alamo was a battle cry here at Jacinto! We really enjoyed the history of independence from Mexico for Texas here at the memorial, the movie provided a nice historical perspective! The monument provided a nice aerial view of the surrounding oil refineries and ships and a nice view of the USS Texas! And also you could envision how the battle took place many years before all the oil refineries were there!
Steve Treviño
I loved the park, the grounds, the battleship. The tower gives a great bird's eye view of the grounds. The museum was fantastic with many items of the past. I wish the gift shop in the tower had more items for sale. They do not even sale flags. I would imagine if there was any place in Texas that sold flags it would be here. I was wrong... Other than that the experience was great.
Kerry Bradley
The Battle at San Jacinto, recognized by historians as one of the most significant in world history, freed Texas from Mexico and allowed the United States to acquire the huge southwest territory. The Museum and Monument commemorate Gen. Sam Houston’s victory over the larger army commanded by Santa Anna which gave Texas it’s freedom. The displays inside are well presented. The trip to the top of the Monument and views from there are not to be missed. The film about the Texas Revolution is a great introduction to
Texas history for all age groups. We enjoyed touring the battlefield as well with the audio descriptions of the site.
Jeremy Little
Very open environment. Great place to take the kids for some educational fun and ride the elevator to the top. Loved looking at all the historical documents and soldier attire. Very nice to see Texas represented in such an important way.
Owen Carew
An interesting memorial and a lot can be read into the story of why it exists.
Definitely took some of the shine off to see an exhibit that required paid entry - when the exhibit was a sales pitch by petroleum companies talking about how great they are to the people of Texas. Actual historical exhibits are free and worthwhile.
Nancy England
Great place. My granddaughter loves to come here. Very disappointed to here their trying to find a new location for the Battleship. I feel like when it's gone so will this place because it is one of the reasons we go there. The Monument/Museum. The Battleship. The Ship channel. A new great little playground and to ride the Ferry across, all of what draws us to the place.
Whitman Fallis
If you are a fan of Texas history, this is a must visit location. The first thing you need to do is to go to the visitor center (at the bottom of the tower) and check out the museum. Don't waste your money on the paid advertisement by the local oil companies. You shouldn't have to pay to check out their "exhibits". Love the industry, I just don't get that they are trying to capitalize / monetize a historical monument. After doing the cool video, you should now be prepared to actually see where the Texas heroes fought and what the battlefield looked like from their view. Go to both the Texan and Mexican sides of the battlefield. It's very accessible via car. They have done a great job marking everything.
Deepak
Exotic historical museum loated on the Eastern end of Houston.
Had an opportunity to learn and understand the freedom struggle and the liberation of Texas. Don't miss the movie show at 2pm where in you have opportunity to learn about history of Texas ,Alamo war and how Texas stood out for its freedom. They also have lot of artifacts from the war including the model battleship within the museum. Its nice to have a stroll around the museum.
Reflection pool where the mirage of monument falls over the water is located opposite to the entrance. Battleship is located next to the pool. Observatory deck can be accessed through elevator located close to the entrance.
View from the observatory deck is very nice that everything expands in bird's eye view.
Gift shop is located next to exit door and you can collect the war souvenirs. #HappyVisiting
JC POWERS
My great grandfather helped build the monument. It's a very nice place to go and relax and get away for a while. History markers are located around the property and if you get a chance, read the writings on the outside walls of the monument. Wanna get a higher view?? Then take the elevator to the top of the observatory. They charge for this but not much. And most of all don't forget to cross over to the battle ship.
Update 3/2020. The battleship is now closed to the public. From what I know they are making repairs and don't know if it'll ever open again. If you never been, you missed something very special.
Anthony Acosta
Amazing place. There is serenity in the air that really lends this place a little bit of reverence. Learning about the historical events that transpired here, and seeing how this impressive structure was constructed, well, you can't help but be awed by this experience.
Definitely take the time to go up the elevator to the top for a fantastic view of the USS Texas in the distance as well as the surrounding area.
Robert Harris IV
Very impressive complex, park tries to keep the land accurate to the conditions during the Battle of San Jacinto. Love it. To clarify, it does not cost $22 to ride the elevator. That is the price for the combo ticket to do everything from elevator, movie and special exhibit. The young lady at the front desk is very helpful in explaining prices thoroughly. Also, when I asked to go to the 5th floor the lady told me that’s the observation deck. I asked what’s in between that and another young man told me it’s the archives where they keep other artifacts and offices for accounting and curators. I read these other reviews and can’t believe you people actually think there’s a CIA office or Sam Houston still alive in one of these floors. Internet is crazy. Regardless, great visit. I don’t recommend going to the Battleship if you don’t want to fall or be exhausted at the end. Battleship staff are very rude for the expensive price I pay to walk around a sinking tub.
Jon Curry
Museum was closed. Still fun to walk around though.
Ricky Pike
After living in Texas longer than I care to admit, I finally visited this place. The museum is great and the view over flat land from the top of the monument is impressive. There are some good photo opportunities here with the monument in the background.
Anna Diaz
Not much to see. The whole trip took an hour. The cost was great for a cheap family day. It costed $21 for a family of 4. 2 adults and 2 kids to go up the elevator. The sight on the top is beautiful. The restroom are clean and the staff are very helpful.
Waylon Vanderpoel
Magnificent. Must see in person. Pictures do not do it justice.
David Hearne
You can't be an official Texan unless you've visited this place!
Jacob Tijerina
This state park relates the story of The Birth of Texas as an independent state, a very interesting site, complete with museum and gift store. Numerous landmarks depict various stages of the battle; USS TEXAS (BB-35) a World 1 era battleship is very close by as well!
Anthony Martinez
I loved it (yes you have to pay) But Its soo much fun!! Kids will love it here!!
Brian DTX
Critical part of Texas history and very much worth the stop. The museum and grounds are free, but there is a charge for both the movie and an elevator ride to the observatory on top. Both are worth the price. The building itself is interesting - note the fossils in the giant stone blocks. We've been there twice but the weather was lousy both times so we weren't able to walk the grounds. Note you do have to drive through an industrial area to get to the park so if you're thinking you made a wrong turn just keep following 225 or the signs to the park and you will be there soon enough
Duane Dixon
Was neat to see the final battleground for Texas Independence. The spire is magnificent, the observation deck was fun, the movie was good, sadly, however, I wanted more from the museum. All in all it was a good experience but the Alamo has much more. Seeing as San Jacinto was the final and defining battle for Texas Independence I expected more from the museum.
Tim Bade
Spectacular if you grew up in Texas and know the history. Not exactly the most accessible area of town. Monument is taller than Washington
Stephan Shaffer
As a new Texan this monument visit and museum was so educational and helped boost my pride in this great state. Beautiful prairie land and inspiring monument to the battle that help found the great Republic of Texas. Great place for education, picnicking and enjoying family time.
Buddy Conyers
Great monument explaining Texas history. Too bad the surrounding battlefields are no longer maintained. Weeds over your head in many areas. Texans should be outraged one of our most historical sites are in this condition. No longer live in Texas but was very surprised. Again the monument area was nicely maintained
Robert Little
It's important history, absolutely, but the museum was a yawn. Exhibits of precious documents and artifacts don't tell the story. The 36 minute movie, on the other hand, is excellent. Paying extra for the "special exhibit" was a mistake. Take the elevator ride to the observation floor. It's fun. However, peering through cloudy glass panels is no joy. Coin operated binoculars don't add much to the experience.
vacations and food
Very nice place. Good place for barbeque too. There was a tower and a war ship. You need to pay if you like to try them. The only not good thing is they close early and you have to move your car from the parking lot..
Richard Wagoner
About 30 min E of Houston. Lots of history and open space for walks.
Ben Hancock
Makes for a nice day trip depending on where you are in Houston. You sort of have to drive through a section of heavy industrial refineries to get out to it but it's worth it. Monument is interesting and you can pay a small fee to take an elevator to the top. I walked around here for a bit then headed out to San Leon for some oysters. Made for a decent day out.
Jeremey J Morgan
I love this place. If your not familiar with the Battle of San Jacinto, and its importance, thats ok! The whole story is LITERALLY written on the monuments walls. The museum was closed this particular time we went, but just seeing the monument from the exterior is truly fantastic.
Kevin “TheGolfBallGuy” Smith
You can't do better than Texas history.
Carlos Rodriguez
As a kid just went to battle ship of texas never knew there was so much more across the street. A lot of sites to see. like a history field trip.
NicHole Antoinette
Historic site. Great for teens and adults. Little ones would enjoy the elevator ride to the top of the monument. Came her with my husband and we enjoyed learning about a bit of our Texas history!!
Susan B
Battle of San Jacinto reenactment!
JRusted 5.0
Been visiting this museum since I was in 4rth grade and have taken my nieces and nephews some of who are now in their mid 20s. We have a great and historical time always. My favorite thing about it is the feel I get when I see all the history in the collection. Have all the smash pennies, and at the battle ship gift shop you can buy bracelets for the kids to put them in.
John Lane
I've been coming here since high school and place never gets old. You can purchase tickets to take elevator ride to the top observation deck. Amazing view from there. You can also purchase tickets to see the short film Texas forever.
Amanda Burton
The monument is amazing but the hiking trail is extremely overgrown with all sorts of stuff and not kid friendly right now. The trail ends up putting you on private property. But we took that route since the trail has swamp land on both sides and smelled like a rotting carcass. Wont be doing the trail again anytime soon.
Erico Marrero
Cool ppl place to visit
Sabina Eschmann
Another place you have to visit when in Houston....amazing history
Samuel Wasden (Sam)
One of Houston's best kept historical secrets! Taller than the Washington Monument, the San Jacinto Monument commemorates the victory of the Texas forces over the Mexican forces, which ultimately led to the Texas Republic and it's eventual statehood. This battle changed the face of the nation. Come learn the history and walk the field. And while you're here, visit the Battleship Texas!
Lisa Hovland
Beautiful! They do have a free area but it's worth paying to see everything
Marlene Berrier
Keep this historic monument open. A lot of history and great information
Daphne Connolly
A fantastic memorial and free museum. The San Jacinto Battlefield is also well maintained with lots to learn here. Great place to spend the day. Bring a picnic to enjoy. Awesome photo opportunities. Watch the birds in the area.
Leo Frantz
A place everyone should visit. Not just for a trip up to the observation floor of the monument. Seeing the individual pieces used by the people, reading what they wrote, and following the development of Texas is a wonderful experience.
Geo CiMedman
Loved the wee museum in the Monument... for the first time, I understand how Old Sam whupped Santie Anna! Great film with Charlton Heston narrating. Loved the markers in the.old battlefield, and how the terrain helped win the battle. And finally got to ride to the observation tower, amazing!
Brooke Trail
A diamond in the rough!!! Very cool sights and very cheap! I learned so much about Houston and areas of Texas! The sights are breathtaking and did not affect my fear of heights. The ride up is in a regular elevator. But there are even more things on ground level to learn.
uri chemerinski
Film and elevator to the top is worth the visit...
Valeria Mcdonald
Amazing to see the uniforms, clothing and common items of 1840's on display. The clothing in particular makes me realize how much we've changed. Cotton and wool were the primary fabrics worn in a hot, humid climate. But seeing the small sizes brings home the change in our bodies and diets too. The adults of the period were the size or smaller than average 14 year olds of today.
Going up to the observation deck, seeing the area almost surrounded by water gives a better understanding of battle too. Amazing to see all the industry in place almost 200 years after that defining battle. It changed the course of not just Texas but the United States and Mexico.
G Gray
Entertaining and educational, there are plenty of things to do here, you can go to the observation deck of the monument, tour the museum and look out or hike the trail going around the park. There is a lot of history here (this is where Santa Anna was captured in 1836 after the alamo was seized by the Mexican army), if you try to see the USS Texas and the monument in the same day you might not have enough time but you should still have a good time learning more about Texas History.
Ken McWatters
Historic monument by the Ship Channel near Deer Park. Everyone who studied Texas History in school will know about this place, where Sam Houston's army defeated Santa Anna, paving the way for Texas to become an independent nation (and eventually statehood). The monument itself is quite a surprise, it is shaped like and must be as tall as the Washington Monument. With a big lone star on top! And you can ride an elevator to the top too. Also on the grounds is the Battleship Texas, worth a visit as well.
emma lanier
What a wonderful experience. If you love history and Texas, you will love the museum. The staff is friendly and passionate and know their Texas history. Everything really is bigger in Texas.
Aaron Diestelkamp
The moment was cool for a family outing (in conjunction with the battleship Texas just across the way) but the facilities seemed a bit outdated the top viewing floor of the monument in partition could use some renovations and updating (paint was peeling and looked really run down). Still was fun for the family even if it was a bit pricey to go to the top for what it was.
Jeremy Wright
Good information, well maintained, knowledgeable staff, wheelchair access . Picnic areas through the park area. Headquarters secretary s friendly.
John Jairo Vásquez
It has a great view and a great landscape. Such a majestic structure
Kelly Wilson
Amazing educational experience
robert toppi
If you are a history buff you will most certainly want to stop and see this place. Free vehicle ferry to the island. Admission to the museum and to go up the 54 floor elevator in the monument was fairly priced. This place represents the turning point in the war that led to Texas being independant. The reflection pool at the base of the monument is similar to that of the one in Washington DC.
Daniel Yeager
Perfect day trip from Houston, spent a little over an hour. Observation deck 400+ feet in the air that highlights the position of both armies. 35 minute informational movie that starts on the hour and a great little display of artifacts and timelines of the history of Texas.
Nataliia Kotenko
History of Texas, place of significance for all Texans, and theres military discounts for family
Amber Brown
This was a really cool place to visit if you are in the area, the elevator attendant was very kind and nice to talk to. Don't forget to bring quarters so you can look out through the telescopes! It was $6 for adults to go to the top, worth it!
Gary Pabst
Texas history. Museum is great, the elevator was closed so didn't get to go up to observation level. Lots of Texas historical items.
Scott Moseley
Awesome museum which is free. I would skip the $6.00 elevator ride to the top. As view is less than stellar. Nearby Texas battleship.. Very cool. Worth the $12.00
Thomas Cordero
Texas is really big, and I underestimated the size of this Obelisk. When I was there, the indoor museum was not open although just being close to this marvel is such a sight, and really left me in amazement, it's really worth visiting and taking a sight of this memorial.
Marc Ness
This place is a must see. For all of the non-Texans (I am definitely one), this is eye-opening about how the US was formed in this part of the continent. For Texans, this will be a point of pride with some balance. I am proud of Texas, and Texans, after this. Even as a small-s socialist.
Jusie Rodriguez
This Monument was so amazing and fascinating to see and learn about our fallen brothers that made our Texas history. Appreciating the beautiful sight was a pleasure to us and our family and we reccomend it to any true Texan to see this astounding monument
April Kratz
Visiting the SJ Monument was awesome! Lots of cool things to see in the museum and learn about. I went on a Sunday wasn't crowded at all and no line to take the elevator up. Was a great experience :)
M Z Prince
My kids loved riding the elevator to the top and they enjoyed seeing all the old weapons in the museum. They could not believe there was actually a battle at that very spot and they enjoyed learning about it.
Kristopher Pastrano
The exhibits were very informative and interesting. They cover time periods all the way from pre-colombian to modern day. It was not crowded the day we went. There are also trails around the battleground site for hiking or biking.
M T
Super cool monument. Reminds of dc monument . So much history exists here !
JD Lott
The exhibit inside is really interesting, maybe not the best for younger/less patient kids.
I gave a 5 star because the monument is impressive! Great free place to visit.
Guillermo Mendoza
Great museum and monument to a piece of Texas history
Bruce Sealy
Went by after visiting the Battleship Texas when it was open July 4th weekend. Unfortunately, apparently the elevators are out of service so we didn't pay to go inside because you couldn't go up in the tower.
Isaac M
Absolutely amazing experience filled with rich Texas history. Includes a theater and observatory. Worth the trip out there.
Chris C
Museum was pretty interesting. The trip up the elevator might be worth it if it isn't crowded. On a busy day, its super cramped up there. I'd visit the museum again, but not the observation level.
Kevin Cocks
Amazing piece of history. Had things went badly for the Texans we would be a very different country. Elevator was closed for maintenance or I would have given 5 stars. 😎 …
Jesse Arredondo
They had discount prices for veteran's and you'll learn a lot of Texas history. Fun place to take your kids to explore the top level and gift shop.
Chena
The children weren't very excited since we didn't use the elevator to go to the top floor. If prices would of been updated on the website perhaps we would of planned to spend more time here. Other than that pretty nice place to visit.
John Briggs
I'm a bit of a history buff do I loved my time here. There was a lot more to see then I thought there would be such as the USS Texas, the monument, the Texans encampment, replicas of the twin sister canons, grave sites, and the Mexican encampment which had several signs explaining what was there.
Russell Betts
A great view of the area, very interesting museum about the battle
Kate Doamekpor
Cute little museum, beautiful views, wonderful informative movie. Only word of caution, bring deep forest bug spray. By far some of the worst mosquitoes I've experienced.
frankie reyes
Always a great place to bring your family and relax for a while. Very informative and the staff is extremely friendly to everybody plus are you supporting historic Texas monument just by visiting and investing some time and money here highly recommend five stars love it!!!
Andrew Ward
View from the tower is amazing on a clear day. I also highly recommend a visit to battleship Texas adjacent to the monument. Both are very informative across a large part of Texas and US history.
Saron Guide
Insane historical treasure that I don't recall ever learning about in school.
Clay wood
It was a hot day. But it is always interesting to be able to see a piece of history up close.
Jerry McSpadden
This is a great place to learn about the history of the Battle of San Jacinto. The museum has any things to see and read about the History. Very well laid out and usually is not very crowded
Lee Schultz
The newly installed exhibit on local Industry is done amazingly well. It's user friendly, interactive, and progressive. The museum needed this update and new feature.
Jennifer Palm
Memorial is beautiful, of course lots of history. Museum part is free. Only pay for the specialty museum section and to go to the top. It's not overly expensive. Great views.
Gus Perez
The place is nice with a excellent view when you take the elevator to the top . A panoromic 360 view of the whole area with the Houston ship channel to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the east . Insciped on the monuement are historical Texas facts of our history of our Republic. Great place to take your family and visitors for a day trip . Also nearby is a seafood restaurant and parking is free but a fee is charged there .
B E
Lots of history; the tower is not as impressive but the building definitely is.
Karol Roark
Though the website says it is free, they charged $6 to ride to the top. (The view from there is mostly obstructed.) They also charged for the "special" exhibit and the film. The museum was free and, though small, very good.
Tonya Berry
Very well done and maintained. All the employees were very friendly and knowledgeable.
Amanda Harris
Was closed on inside..but still was Amazing to see
R. Sanchez
Great visitors place. Bring money to be able to ride to the top. There is also a bottom part museum for a fee. You can also rise around in the state park

A must visit the top of the monument, once up it will take few minutes to enjoy the panoramic views. From here visit the USS Texas just a mile from the Museum

Family fun day for everyone age 2 to 52!
Manuel Reyes
Beautiful place, too bad the elevator was not working and we couldn't go to the top of the tower.
J C
Great museum of Texas history. I love the film and the lookout. Exploring the battlefield markers is a must do.
J H (TheGreatSlim)
Enjoyed the visit immensely, San Jacinto is currently undergoing some construction so we weren't able to enjoy the entire exhibit but I'm also glad to see them doing the upgrades.
Jonathan Zapata
This museum hosts lots of artifacts and historical documents. This is an affordable museum, but it is geared towards an adult audience. What I mean by that is that the youngin's might find it quite bland and boring.
Mrn Byn
5 Stars for the Texas history plus it's a phenomenal monument
Be sure to get a ticket to go up the elevator!
Don't forget to drive across to the battleship Texas
Jeff P.
It's a great place to visit. It is, however, in the middle of the refinery area. But it gives a very good history of Texas' beginnings.
Pingyueh 'Nelson' Li
Bad timing when we visit here, windy and 35 degrees.
S Ruby

So interesting - we all hear of the Alamo, but this is "the rest of the story." Great monument, enjoyed walking around it & reading the inscriptions and enjoyed the museum inside.

Amazing structure built from unusual stone in 1936.
gregg giddish
The Battleship and museum are well worth the time
Mark Crawford
Interesting history, the artifact display is worth the visit alone! Amazing how small people were back in those days. Don't miss battleship Texas whilst your there.
D C
Needs to be open more and someone needs to get people to stop smoking pot along the trails, maybe cameras or something? But the whole trail smells like someone just fogged out the swamp with weed
Garnie Bolling
good to see the birthplace of the republic of texas.
the grounds were ok, but the museum inside was great. Lots of good history and information. you can even take a tour of the top...

P. D
Neat place, they had a great historical film, a small museum, a gift shop, and a high lookout point.
Bring change for the viewers, and a penny puncher if interested :)

Enjoyed the plan on returning, hope to stay longer. Learned a lot of interesting facts about the independence of Texas at the museum.
Spencer R
It was pouring rain upon our arrival and we were soaked by the time we got inside lol Of course the a/c has been full blast which was expected so we were cold. Other than that mild discomfort and a seeming lack in warm hospitality from the individuals who work there, it was quite the experience amd will be back again.
I have actually been back to the grounds themselves to work out, but javen't gone back inside.
murtadha alosfur
Great museum Great souvenirs but couldn't go up because the elevator was broken

If you are in Houston, it's a must to stop by here. Not a large exhibit, but it's good. I go here with my family every year. Been trying to make it to the reenactment of the Battle at San Jacinto, but it's been so packed I can never get in.

Great history lesson. A must see for every Patriot.

Spoke with a man that when he was a young boy actually met and spoke with a man that actually was in the Battle. You never know who you might meet so treat everyone with respect. After all it is the TEXAS way.
