Reviews of The ARTS at Marks Garage
This is only a review on the parking garage. CHEAPEST PLACE DOWNTOWN, at least that I've found. Most places are $21, even municipal parking. This garage is only $10 for a business day. It's clean, no elevator though, only stairs. Don't pay attention to the arrows painted on the floors, pay attention to the signs to find out where to go. Remember where you park, because the levels aren't labeled. Take your ticket with you when you leave your car because the kiosk to pay is on the bottom level (near the foot path to enter/exit). When you return to leave, pay at the kiosk, you'll get another ticket which you give to the machine at the exit to raise the gate. The kiosk does take card, unlike many other parking garages.
A small local art gallery. Much of the work is inspiring. Super informative/friendly staff greets you as you enter. There’s a rotating display of art every month(call for changes). Some months it’s photography, other months it’s abstract art. You never know what awaits you. Worth a visit if you’re into the art scene.
Very nice. Just a little pricey. Very conv for Hawaii Theater.
Great local arts center supporting the community. Bar available by donation during local shows. Stop by and support by purchasing Arts at Marks gear.
Arts at Marks has wonderful rotating art shows, performances, yoga classes, and much more! They also have awesome coffee and food at Cool Beans Coffee Spot inside which has made from scratch breakfast burritos, cookies, brownies and more. The library has a small satellite friends of the library bookstore there as well, making this a haven from the busy streets. Also, Downtown Art Center is only a couple of blocks away. They both have First Friday activities. Very cool places to go see wonderful art during the week or during First Fridays!
Been frequenting this theater space since 2000! Highly recommend hitting up a show here, checking the monthly art installations, and booking out for your own events or shows.
Cheap all day parking $10 if you get there before 10am and leave by 5pm
Very interesting store with unique items for sale, it's definitely worth visiting.
Great venue to see local artists.
I was lucky enough to see the Hawaii Water Color show on 10/17/20! Impressive and beautiful! I'll go back a few times. The staff are welcoming and friendly. Hoping they start serving adult beverages and add more exhibits. Great local amenity!!
Local art gallery that's been around forever. They do shows featuring local artists of all kinds (painters, sculptors, etc.) and a small stage area for performances. They also rent out the space for events. I recently went here for a fundraiser and it was a cool vibe. They're very helpful in getting tables and chairs set up for events. As of 4/4/18 they're also letting the Friends of the Library of Hawaii do a pop-up shop selling used books to benefit the libraries, which is cool. Directly connected to Mark's Garage so parking is super simple or there's metered parking in all the nearby blocks. The facility is staring to look a little dated on the inside, but it's a longtime establishment so that's to be expected. Looked like the bathrooms were renovated recently though -- nice and definitely one of the cleanest places I've peed in Chinatown.
Great place to find art from local artists. They also have a small coffee shop with a nice selection of cold brew coffee. I recommend the vegan Thai coconut.
Everything about Arts at Mark Garage is wonderful. The performers' commitment to promoting visual arts and encouraging the local community to produce arts are very impressive. There are art shows, horror, exhibition, film screening and many more. I have fun here and will keep on coming.
What a cool spot!!!! Check out rotating local art, grab a good coffee, and a be a part of the local art scene. I love this place and keep going back!!
What a neat little venue! The gallery showcases local artists and the exhibitions change frequently, and it seems like there's always a good show on. Improv, Shakespeare, Burlesque, and more. I think they also host private events.
The epicenter of Chinatown's First Friday and Chinatown arts, it's where we always start our visits downtown. They rotate arts displays every few weeks and have shows too (my daughter saw Rocky Horror here on Halloween). Also, the windows have posters of upcoming events around town. Always interesting.
Great art venue, home of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival
MacBeth
I’ve read this play. I’ve help direct this play. I seen a movie of this play. I’ve done the Shakespeare Recitation of the Porter of this play. I’ve done a mockery of this play. Despite that, what I saw this evening was an amazing production.
First, I will pull the theater superstition about saying the name of the play. From here on it is “M.” I will reiterate my last review about the beauty of the smaller performance space. Now, I MUST say as loudly as I can, the awesomeness that is this production.
This was a very large cast for such a small stage but, every character deserved their audience time. Victims, villains, manipulators, and heroes... every single character added to this performance. What I loved the most about this performance was this is the first time I felt sympathetic to the main character, whose fate I knew before walking in. Great characters, excellent delivery of dialogue, and stage combats sequences that keeps you on the edge and all the way back of your seat.
I've walked by this place many times but it was always closed. Luck would have it we were in Chinatown for something else and as we walked by we saw it would be open shortly! So we waited for it to open.
The lady who opened up was actually the lady working the friends of the library bookstore inside... which I didn't know was there. It's not big but it's worth stopping in to see. You can't beat FotL book prices. I scored a Dr. Andrew Weil book for $2! Great condition.
The gallery is small, we enjoyed the few exhibited artists work that were there. I think one of the big draws is that it's an event spot. When we walked in there was an event already in full swing. Might be an actors studio class? It was curtained off with thick heavy curtains.
If that area is closed off just plan on keeping your voices down a tad... not that you usually go to an art gallery to romp and scream (well most galleries you don't lol).
At any rate we kept our voices down, walked thru the gallery quickly, less than 5 min I would guess. Walked through the bookstore area in the back in the same amount of time. Tiny but quite a variety! (Manga for a dollar! A few collector books were on site, in this case I believe out was Queens of history... something of the sort. Health, comics, fiction, cooking, little of everything truly!
I enjoyed the exhibited artists thoughtfully created pieces. Nice quick place to walk thru when your already in that area.
If you're visiting from somewhere else I do want to warn you. While the area has amazing, fun little shops tucked everywhere we do have a homeless problem. You will walk in areas that smell like urine, you might come across someone homeless sleeping in the doorstep of a closed business.
It's a problem, it's embarrassing and I apologize for that. Sadly a lot of the beautiful places this island has to offer is tainted by the very big, very real issue of homelessness.
So there is your warning, but, while you should note the issue, I do encourage you to explore the gems of shops and see the beauty that is there!
Enjoy! Mahalo!
Small little whole in the wall place with a small art gallery, book store, and theater area. Awesome people there and pretty cool place to just relax right in the heart of China town.
Always a great venue to meet interesting folks. Nicely laid out art presentations, a little resale bookshop in the back + a performance area.
We had an awesome time watching Rocky Horror Picture Show! The area was cool and hip and somewhat tight. The people who ran the event were friendly and the overall experience was enjoyable!
Nice small art space. Community bookstore in one corner with a modest selection of used books. Great location for events.
Great atmosphere and people
Awesome venue. Comic book art all April long!
Wonderful artists displaying their art, annual Shakespeare festival is here, and now has a bookstore. Very neat place!
Saw Rocky Horror Picture Show here Halloween night. Lovely party! Have gone to several events here all we're loads of fun.
Fun and creative events. Interesting art. Very friendly people. All these things make it hard for me to decline any invitation to an event at Mark's Garage.
A central hub for the Honolulu Art community, Arts At Mark's Garage is a good place to start (or end) on your First Fridays tour of Chinatown.
Lots of events available to the public monthly, if you like art there are activities here on a regular basis that are both fun and interesting.
Often cool exhibits, pick up local art and a beach read at the used book shop- books priced nicely, good ecclectic collection.
Found some unique greeting cards handmade using photos from former library books, just a couple bucks each.
Many spaces are tight. And be careful where you turn, because there are dead ends where you must back out from, unless you have a small Honda Fit or Mini Cooper to turn around. And there is no elevator, so no good for seniors or anyone who can't maneuver the narrow stairwell.
This place has beautiful art and great coffee. It would be a place to stop at.
Mark's is a great place to park. They recently switched their parking contract over to Elite and it has been a great experience so far.
Came early, guys at the booth were very friendly. Stalls are on the small side. Gets crowded so expect double parking.
fabulous find for arts of all sorts in Honolulu -- nice 'black box' space with a variety of truly original offerings --
Great art exhibits, friendly staff, amazing coffee!
A classic mid-century (20th) architectural temple to the personal car. Along with ground level retail.
Good place for art lovers. Unique artwork in very different styles.
Gallery and performing space that features a wide variety of local and touring artists, shows and events.
