Any art, history, or art history enthusiast will absolutely love this museum. It doesn't get crowded, has a very beautiful collection of American art and a smaller but still as beautiful, European art collection. As with all art museums, it's a very peaceful walk through the halls here.
Takes about 3.5 hours to go through it all.

We pre-registered for the before hours tour. It was amazing, and fun! There were only 3 of us on the tour, and while there were additional staff in the museum, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Being able to see these pieces in person was definitely the highlight, but also some interesting lesser known pieces were fun to learn about, and exploring the cabinet of curiosity gave me so much joy!

I’m accustomed to museums in DC that are usually free, and so I’m annoyed at the expense, but I had a great experience. I went when there were special Christmas trees decorated for a fundraiser at the museum. I loved the creativity of the designs and ended up being extremely pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed the other exhibits that are probably there year round. You can get much much cheaper tickets for the last hour before closing, but be warned, you’ll need more than an hour to see and appreciate everything and the staff are kind but prompt about ushering you out at closing time.

Wonderful museum which has amazing collections. Highly recommend to those who love art. We got free admission on second Saturday between noon-2pm. The staff are very nice.
Bob Baxter
An excellent value for the price. Classical works from antiquity to the present day. Check out the rotating exhibition each season. Parkign is available for free on the weekend. Be sure to pick up a unique present at the museum gift shop.
Mary Vasquez
This museum is incredible. It has works from the full gamut of famous artists--Caravaggio to Kusama. The Sol LeWitt installation is beautiful and worth the trip alone. I was shocked and impressed at every turn. Don't miss it!
Plan to spend at least 3 hours if you want to see everything. There's a cafe that serves food. The library is not currently open but should be opening soon. They have a bunch of free admission opportunities--check their website for more on that.

Stately & imposing, castle formed architecture, filled with truly impressive works of classic and contemporary art. This is a very large, elegant, public museum with very high security and seemingly countless exhibits and displays that inspire, educate, and facinate the viewer. Wear your walking shoes and prepare to climb marble stairways. When you're ready, enjoy the cafe and gift shop. The special art library there may be available at certain times by appointment only. This museum is definitely the prized jewel and rightful pride of Hartford, well worth the visit.

Bigger than I expected, with a nice modern collection and a pretty good Renaissance and Medieval collection as well. The people who work in the galleries are all armed with tablets and are the friendliest docents I've ever encountered in an art museum. Totally unpretentious.
Brittany
I was visiting Hartford for the weekend and I’m glad I didn’t pass this place! Such a beautiful museum! The staff was also very nice and knowledge! What a great visit!

Went to the MLK celebration my second time back for it, and as with the first time it was uplifting, joyous, inspiring and so beautiful highly recommend it and the Wadsworth itself. It offers so much visual delight, stimulation, and intellectual nourishment. I always feel full when I leave and the images I was lucky enough to encounter stay with me and the energy of the creative spirit I encounter there.

This is a major museum and I only regret that I haven't visited it before. Like other major museums, it covers the various canons, with an outstanding collection of paintings from the Hudson River School of landscape painting, but there's a lot more here. The current exhibition of glass arts is really beautiful as well. I went with 3 11 year old boys and that was a bit of a challenge - the museum is not in any way a children's museum, nor did I see any kind of space for kids. No matter - this is one of Connecticut's gems.

Absolutely amazing museum filled with beautiful works of art and artifacts. The building itself is a work of art. Beautiful carvings and architectural details everywhere you look
Everything is well organized and displayed very nicely. Staff is friendly and accommodating without "hovering".
We will definitely be coming back to this museum for many years to come!
Natasha Miles
Was enjoying Second Saturdays celebrating Women's Month as the featured visual artist in the Hartford Courant room. Families and patrons of the museum created personal symbols representing self-love & self-expression.
Audrey Dale
Absolutely fantastic museum with very impressive collections and exhibits! The glass collection exhibit is stunning and the variety and amount of paintings by famous artists is incredible!
Gloria Long
Went 2nd time to see glass exhibit and more, this time with family visiting from Detroit. 6 and 8 yr. olds were enthralled. I found out there's a ptg of a General Warren as he died during the Revolutionary War by Trumbull, after whom my street, WARRENTON Avenue was named. Museum is such a gem. Staff are so nice and helpful.
Gabby Kay
As I return to the Wadsworth at rare, random intervals through my life, it is always a place that brings some genuine moments of magic and connection.
I'm by no means an art connoseuir but I can certainly appreciate the variety their collection brings and the way the space informs the experience. If you're in Hartford it's definitely worth a lesureily afternoon of review.
Peter Huang (Pete)
Great collection with many artworks from well-known artists. The museum is free an hour before closing.

Overall, a great experience. Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum was very vast in its contents and displays. The collection provided for a pleasant viewing.
The price was relatively cheap for the great time it gave me.
Noah Lepek
The Wadsworth Atheneum is unequivocally one of the greatest art museums in New England! Being my first time visiting Hartford, CT, both the collections and the staff of the museum made the visit to the city ever so welcoming! Similar to many other galleries, one can find artistic giants such as Andy Warhol, Eugène Delacroix, Élisabeth Louise-Vigée Le Brun, and many more in this microcosm of creativity. The staff members were ambitiously filled with knowledge of both the anatomy of the museum and the many exhibitions available to visitors. When planning a trip to the capital of Connecticut, definitely plan to make a stop in this historic and precious gem of a museum.

Had a wonderful time. If you are an art lover you will have a great time.
Was in town on business and had a Sunday off so I decided to drop by.
Did a little tour and then explored the rest of the place on my own. I would recommend getting here when they open, it took almost the full 5 hours they are open to see every piece. The cafe is also a nice touch and was very pleasant.
Beth Elisa
We went today from the free second Saturday. It was lovely, not too crowded.
Kelly Nelson
My toddler and I visited for Second Saturday (family day). It was a lot of fun and the volunteers did a great job with the kids; they had arts and crafts, family friendly tours and toddler activities. It was pretty busy (she eventually became overwhelmed) so I'd like to return with her for a more quiet day.
Tae
Very impressed & pleased with the MLKJR celebration. It was very fun, interactive and informative for the kids. This was the only event in the city of Hartford honoring Dr. King & they did a great job!
penny holloway
Cute art gallery. Love the paintings by van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and others.
Kelly Selander
Bright beautiful museum space in downtown Hartford. The special changing exhibits and contemporary art are worth visiting for. The permanent collection includes a lot of landscape paintings, portraits, and period furniture (not my favorite but that's personal preference). There are also pieces important to local history including items from the Colt family and painting of the charter oak tree.
Nic
I wanted to check out the glass blow exhibit and ended up going there on the second Saturday during their free time without knowing. I believe it's geared towards families when they have their events so it was really crowded. Lots of kids. It made it hard to really enjoy everything. However, I appreciated them trying to get kids involved. If you are an adult going I would recommend a not so busy time. However, if you have kids those seconds, Saturdays are probably the best days for you
Debbi Tomel
We enjoyed our visit on Saturday viewing the glass blowing. Many pieces were exquisite! I just loved the Angle Tear, precious!!!! So much to view, you definitely get lost in time. So relaxing!!! Thank You!
Amber H
You could spend hours here. There is a very big collection of different art. Currently easy enough to follow the arrows for visitor path and have a good time. It was specified up front that there is no flash photography or videos. Friendly staff located everywhere with "ask me" shirts on. There is also a mobile guide on the website that explains more detail regarding certain works of art, so if you see a number next to a piece, there is a description on this mobile guide. All in all a good place to go.
Marshall J Brown
After taking the tour of the glass artisans, I enjoyed the wide variety of artists on display here and the dedication to the quality of their craft. Amazing shapes, colors and thought put into every creation. The massive spaces given to the arts at the Wadsworth Antheneum make the arts far more enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
Markym Fox
This was my first time here at the museum and i can confidently say it's been one of my favourite experiences yet. It was huge, diverse and full of culture. There was a certain peacefulness about it that I can't quite describe.
Lorraine Willias
Beautiful place! And Hartford residents get in free.
Millie Obregon
I came here for the Fired Up: Glass exhibit and I was not disappointed! It was an incredible exhibit filled with many intricate pieces.
Dan Patterson
Simply amazing, so many famous artists and their fabulous works. The variety of collections is vast and eclectic. It was so moving, I had to come back the next day and I still didn’t see everything.
Deborah Lynn
Such a great museum! Small and intimate, which is perfect! We signed up for the Paul Manship tour, and it was AWESOME! I highly recommend the private group tour. It's an hour long and covers so much. We learned so much today, about Paul Manship. His work is so wonderful. Please go see and enjoy! Amazing!!!!! Also, the staff is wonderful!
Jillian Kara
This museum is beautiful! I spent hours here and could go back and spend even more time. There are so many different art pieces and styles. There is really something everyone will enjoy here. If you bring your student ID your ticket is cheaper. I highly recommend!
Paul Foote
We spent a wonderful afternoon at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (WAMA). The museum has art from ancient classic periods, such as Greece and China to the Renaissance and Baroque periods of Western Art, and the more modern of Expressionism, Impressionism, Modern and Contemporary periods including some wall murals from Sol Lewitt.
The staff at the museum is very helpful and will answer questions about a particular work or artist and even give you helpful suggestions for viewing certain pieces. We found that very helpful for our own viewing.
We viewed every gallery in the museum on our visit and it took us close to 4 hours. Had we spent more time with some of the interactive aspects of the displays we could have spent an entire day there. If you are visiting or live in Hartford, the WAMA is well worth a visit.
Darlene Webb
Spent 3 hours there, and did not see everything. I would recommend planning on spending more time there or make multiple trips. The variety of artists and the opportunity to be so up close to their works makes the small admission fee more than worth it.
Vincent Nocito
A really impressive collection. Plan on spending the entire day exploring the galleries. Nicely annotated and displayed. The cafe was a nice place for a light meal. We will definitely need to visit again.
Mzia Antidze
Visiting this museum was an amazing experience. I would love to live in Hartford to just see this place every other week. Definitely a must see!
James Master
I like the museum. I came on a day where they offered crafts and decorations for the holiday were up
A MOHAN
What a great museum. Exhilarating experience. While MoMA, MET,MFA etc stay in limelight, for artlovers visit to Wadsworth Atheneum is unmissable. American abstract and European collection fascinating
George “GW” White
Very interesting pieces of art and friendly staff. I use to work here and I'm visiting from North Carolina so I decided to visit the museum and see what has changed. It looks so different seeming I worked there when they were renovating still and it was nice to see how beautiful the renovations were.
DrunkenFaeGirl
We love going to see the Festival of Trees every year. The single downside is how loud and crowded it can be during events which can be tough for neurodivergent patrons so best that in mind when making plans, if necessary.
William Morris
A spectacular building, gallery layout, and collection. The museum staff were especially engaging and helpful. The collection checks most boxes for American and European artists over long periods of time. Terrific 19rh and 20th century collections.
Vicki Mitchell
Visited recently for the art and florist exhibit, where area florists design an arrangement to complement a painting or other artwork on display. It was beautiful and added an extra touch to our visit.
They also had different choral groups performing throughout the weekend , and they were very good.
It is easy to park in the Front Street garage and walk to the museum, where they validate your ticket in the gift shop and we only paid $3.00 to park.
Amy Binette
This place is spectacular! It has everything I imagined a museum would have AND THEN SIME! The workers are very nice and very helpful. I will visit many many many more times. Spent 2 hours there and barely scratch the surface. If you're going to go, plan a WHOLE DAY FROM OPEN TO CLOSE.
Anissa Lewis
I love the wadsworth. I spent a lot of my time here growing up. My mom and I would take trips anytime we could to see new exhibits, spend time together, and appreciate the art.
James Wallace
What a gem of a museum!! Right here in downtown Hartford well stocked with works from most of the greatest artists in history as well as many who one day. Will be! Please do not not miss this wonderfully staffed and presented collection today!!
Terry Ernsberger
Definitely visit here! This is one of the best museums I've ever been to. It has a wide collection of various artists from classical masters to Modern Art that will thrill any and all art lovers.
Definitely plan to spend all day here. If you arrive at the opening of the doors and stay until they tossed you out, you could see quite a bit of all the art and have a wonderful time all day long. If you have the opportunity, definitely make a multiple day trip to this museum.
I keep coming back here for the Thomas Cole paintings and the other wonderful Hudson River School artists. Frederick Church and other masters all congregate in one gallery that is a wonder to behold.
One of my other favorite galleries is the Morgan 1 Great Hall. It's laid out like a gallery that you might find 200 years ago with paintings stacked from the floor to the upper reaches of the ceiling. There's such a wide variety of different artists and styles of European art, so be sure to grab one of the guides at each end of the hall so that you can learn more about all of the paintings gracing the walls.
Tracy Pendergast
A variety of art mediums to explore! Highly recommend a visit and a tour.
Dathan Perry
A must see museum while your in Connecticut
S. M.
Spectacular museum. So many stunning collections. I was there for the ancient art collection and it was fascinating. The gift shop has many unusual and interesting things, I spent an hour looking at all of them.
D. R.
A great place to relax and look into the past. Founded in 1842 and opened in 1844, it is the oldest continually operating public art museum in the United States.
Sarah Cooper
Diane was a friendly & knowledgeable guide & even though the space of any museum is not terribly kid friendly, it was amusing to keep 4th graders quiet. The Atheneum does have some neat exhibits, famous artists' work as well as some R hard 2 grasp your head around.. kids would paint some better I think quietly....
Eileen D
Great museum! So many things to see (I couldn't finish in a day). Guided tours were great too!
Tony Kibble
A very interesting art gallery with some very impressive works of art. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
Crystal Adamski
Beautiful place, full of hidden wonders of the world and many artists. Even van Gogh! Good for all ages so makes the perfect family trip, or a cute date, or a evening alone when in need of a change of scenery
Urszula S.
Enjoyable, educational, and pleasing to the eyes art collection of Hudson River School artists, European art, including famous European and American impressionists, just to name a few reason why I highly reccomend to visit this museum
Judy Mattson
The glass exhibit is superb. Varied expressions in glass. The 'Girls' exhibit left a lot to be desired. Photography amateurish. Very disappointing.
Henry Quinn
The Athenaeum (I think they spell with no 'a', thanks, auto correct) punches so far above its weight for being in Hartford. World class permanent collection, in particular of mid twentieth century. In that sense, a bit of a reminder of how far Hartford has fallen at the hands of Robert Moses bad ideas, but go and imagine. Tremendous Lewitt wall drawings and murals.
XXX OOO
The museum staff are super nice..I mean really..they want to talk to you about the art..it was a great expeience
Rebecca Kenefick
Great museum, always interesting exhibits. Also free entry which is nice
Corinne Tryon
The Wadsworth is always a pleasant place to visit! It is in a gorgeous building, with friendly/knowledgeable staff & of course- has beautiful art that is always rotating/being updated with new pieces. During my most recent visit, a guard an I had a good laugh that my sweater matched one of the paintings! Lol Always a good experience here and would highly recommend a visit to anyone, young or old.
Tara Mullett
Well staffed with kind people willing to answer every question. We got to go during the Sunday 4:00 to 5:00 free happy hour which was a great thing to do to fill time before our flight. My friend made a comment that he had never been to a museum where he could get close enough to see the texture of the canvas under the paint ❤️
George Daye
The art there was very interesting and this is one of the best art museums that have been to in a while
Joseph Kole
There are many beautiful works of art. Plan to be there a whole day if you want to see every piece.
Andrew
Amazing collection of art from different eras and types. An interesting building to navigate as well, it was fun to traverse.
Alexandra Ackerman
Huge collection, almost overwhelmingly so, but the docents were able to help and eager to discuss the exhibits.
Christa Galitello
This is the oldest continually operating art museum in the United States, and it's right in the heart of Hartford. It's $15 to get in, or free if you're a Hartford resident, and there's a days worth of things to see. From Van Gogh to Pollock, pieces from the 1600s to present times, there's something for everyone. I highly recommend going when you have more than a few hours to spend.
Thomas Regan-Lefebvre
It's a gem, it should be packed all the time. Truly a mesmerizing place. Lots of thoughts and efforts put on exhibits. On a minor note, I wish the "guns" and not-that-stimulating items from the Colt family were removed. Aren't there any cool stuff from Hartford that do not involve firearms (like bicycles for instance)?
Laurie Arshonsky
Beautiful fusing of two buildings housing some very beautiful artwork! I love the American Art and Impressionist Paintings. The Modern Art was also well represented. The last hour of the day is free but an hour really isn’t long enough! It was a great experience!
Louis Leo
Small but EXQUISITE library. The standouts are the hard model roman figures throughout the library. It possesses a very old, but charming feel. Very cozy and strict quiet for reading and work.
Matthew Koral
Very impressive collection especially for American artists. Don't forget to open the drawers in the curiosities exhibit!
Jim H.
Solid and varied collection, beautiful building. You can see everything in 2-3 hours. Great place to spend an afternoon. Highly recommended!
pat willis
Perfect day trip! We got a free pass from our local library. Beautiful and famous pieces of art. Highly recommended.
Kate Bae
Fantastic gem I'd never thought to visit. 4p to 5p is called happy hour and it's free to enter!
Credible Critic
The oldest continuous operating art museum in the US. The museum buildings and grounds reflect the gilded age of the area, when industrialists who built factories, brought wealth and arts back to their towns for their people. May be the proximity to Boston, this museum is often overlooked.
You will find European and American arts over many periods here in its permanent exhibits. Most of the important periods are well presented. The rolling contemporary exhibits are well thought out and laid out beautifully throughout the years.
The museum location is conducive for exploring many other attractions of the area. Family can easily spend 3-4 hours exploring this museum. One of a must stop in Hartford.
Abdul Raham
I love the art works and beauty of this museum . Their tight security added more meaning to the exhibited art works. I really enjoyed every second spent over there.
Natalie Shaffer
Wonderful experience, staff was very nice and informative. The museum is huge and can easy take you 2-3 hours to see it all!
Theresa spellman
Much larger than it appears with some really great collections. Multiple famous artist on display.
Barry Bernard
Amazing building with wonderful permanent exhibits. Went to see a visiting glass artist exhibit that is a must see. Highly recommended place to see when in Connecticut
kingmaster overall
I'm not much of an art fanatic. Going to this museum really enticed me. Open layouts, beuaitufl spreads, and on hand help. They have people ready to answer any questions in each exhibit room. You have to go, if nothing else, for the great hall. Breathtaking.
Isobel Stevenson
This is a very cool art museum. It may not be huge but it has a deep and diverse collection that is well worth a visit. It is known for its collection of Hudson River School paintings, but there is a lot more to see. The gift shop is a cool place for cool gifts. The museum restaurant is lovely, located in the center of the museum and not relegated to the basement as in some galleries. The food is excellent.
Michelle Ziegler
This is a hidden gem in Connecticut! It's the oldest art museum in New England and houses work from Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Samuel Colt, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol to name a few! From ancient art created before the birth of Jesus Christ to modern abstract sculptures, you'll find it all!
Jeannette Diaz
This place its beautiful nice personal excellent service very clean it's a muse an plus have a theater it open Wednesday's through Sunday's in the picture u going see the fares but I find a secret it open 12noon until 5pm and the last hour it free so comes checkout around 4pm to 5pm tourists in Hartford #xyngularyx Jeannette Diaz
Alper Eroğlu
An amazing collection of different art pieces. Many chances for free admission if you check their website for the latest updates.
Marcos Carvalho
There's so much attention to detail here, nothing is lacking here. So much care goes into displaying the art, as well as setting up an inviting atmosphere.
Bill Beck
We unintentionally went on a second Saturday and it was free admission. You still have to wear masks, but they supplied them. You're also not allowed to eat inside the museum part (our young daughter was caught eating goldfish). The religiously inspired paintings are cool to see. Also impressive were the two statues of lions made from marble from 300 BC.
Megan Coppock
Loved this museum! Not even sure I saw it all in one trip, so I'll have to go again! A few hallways were closed off, but the staff was super helpful in redirecting us to alternate paths. Great variety, too; great collection of modern and contemporary art, plus a big hall of classical oil painting. The curio and antiques cabinet room was really cool, too. Highly recommend this museum to art lovers.
Jim Mandala
Amazing permanent collection. The museums new philosophy has replaced guards with docent assistants in every room, who will help you if you're lost or help you understand the art you're looking at. The new exhibits are well curated and thoughtfully documented with interesting descriptions. This place is a real treasure!
Greyson Thorne
A must-see sight for New England tourists and locals alike! Not only is the building breathtakingly beautiful and filled with world-famous artwork, the staff are very friendly and attentative to making sure you enjoy your visit and find everything easily. I've dragged at least a dozen people hear and everyone loves it. Make it on your list of to-do activities!
Forest Song
Very nice the Museum of Art. Recommend to book their tour in advance.
John Sgammato
I'm a big fan of the Hudson River School, so this is my favorite art museum!
Tom
Always changing great exibits. An amazing permeant collection including Vangoh and Monet. If you love art or are just art curious do yourself a favor and visit the Wadsworth you will be glad you did.
Susan
Dali, Picasso, Miro, Warhol, O’Keefe, Dali, Monet, Munch, Kooning, Cole, Rothko, Davis, Hanson, Pollock and the list goes on. Outstanding museum. This is Hartford at its best.
Kristin Krauskopf
Such a great afternoon. So many wonderful things to see and a super tour.
cynthia willis
A great collection. A pleasure to visit. Highly recommend.
Serenity Rose
Pretty good use of your money and a day trip! Beautiful, spectacularl and large! Haha
Michael Sposato
We were recently in Hartford, Ct and visited the Wadsworth Museum of Art. This museum is well worth a visit the exhibits are fabulous. A large portion of there items came from the Du Pont's. Don't miss this museum.
Matt Weth
Great museum! Love the space and the setup. They have some really amazing pieces here as well. The Vlamnick piece was especially satisfying.
On top of that, the staff was very knowledgeable and incredibly warm and friendly. Will return!
Steven Schwartz
Great and expansive collection. A must see.
Tori Lynn
Beautiful place with a lot of beautiful art. Worth exploring. We had a splendid time and we only made it through one floor.
Taylor Clark
Absolutely stunning display of artworks in each and every room. I was enamored through and through and think this to be one of the most wonderful art museums I’ve ever been to. Hope to be back shortly!
Cécile Woodbury
Beautiful museum. "A small Louvre" according to my 8 year old daughter. She loved it!
Carla Ten Eyck
Weddings at the Wadsworth Atheneum are my new favorite thing! As a professional photographer based in Hartford, I absolutely adore working there. The space is so inspiring and just perfect for art + Hartford lovers! You and your guests are surrounded by art and sculpture and color which creates a wonderful backdrop for your day. Love this venue as a Hartford local and artist!
Bill Sanford
The building itself is a work of art.
If you like art, specifically paintings you will love the place. Actually it's worth a visit just for the architecture. There are masterpieces here that predate the birth of our country. No visit to Connecticut is complete without a stop here, at one of the oldest museums in the nation. If you have a B of A card you're in luck since this is on the 'Museums on Us' list.
Busy B
A beautiful building, in a lovely setting, with a surprisingly large collection. Paintings by many of the Masters. It would be easy to spend hours and hours here. Sadly, our time was limited, but we were glad to have found that Wadsworth.
William Lettick
Clean, brilliant, friendly, awesome exhibit, safe, helpful staff, nothing but good stuff to say about Wadsworth
Owen James
What a great collection of contemporary and fine art. Really great to have right in Hartford- and I’ve had the great food from the museum Café - makes it so you don’t even have to leave.
Nathan C. Hinson
Very nice place and the staff was very good and provide better services to the customer and the atmosphere was also good.
Tess Beck
Wonderful blown glass exhibit and great fun to see all the Christmas trees!
John D
Great experience except it’s not family friendly due to art exhibits that include profanity.
Stephen Taffe
Good place to go, especially for families. Parking is not great but it's Hartford.
Paul Pellegrini
One of the best museums, and The Festival Of Trees is a beautiful tradition

Collin Charles
Fantastic museum in an interesting building. I would recommended any art or architecture fan to come.
Loretta Waldman
The collection - from Renaissance to modern and lots of impressionist masters in between - is positively amazing. Try it out on Fridays from 4-5 p.m. for free, and pay to come back another day for a fuller view. This gem of a museum doesn't get the attention it deserves despite being every bit as good as its better known counterparts in New York and Boston.
Ladiiluk 78
I love this museum ! And the staff is amazing with great knowledge
Scott
5 stars for the museum as I won't take away a star for parking. I found parking on the street, right outside the north entrance but there was a 2 hour limit. There are three parking garages within 3 blocks though.
Solid collection of art but what prompts me to write this review is I like how those assigned to watch over the collections are not just guards keeping an eye out but are more like attendants available to answer questions about the art. If they don't know, they are equipped with an electronic pad in which they can look up information on the museum piece. Some even go out of the way to ask if you have any questions. The lady I was speaking with in the Great Hall, had an obvious love of art and provided a lot of interesting information.
Ann Duluc
Great art museum, would recommend!
Gary R. Brissette
Marsden Hartley's painting was great. I had seen it on loan in Montreal years before and was thrilled to find it here. There were so many great pieces of Art here. I had no idea.
Terry Orcutt
Wonderfully welcoming staff and an enjoyably diverse collection. Our first time there.
Kathy Keene
So enlightening!! The glass display was beautiful! I wish VanGoph was there.
Connolly K
Love the Atheneum! Great assortment of works. Never too crowded!
Brian i
Great museum. Free during their happy hour between 4pm & 5pm when they close. Bring a mask, they can also provide you with one.
Laura Georgiadis
Highly recommend. Museum is full of hidden treasures!
Kevin Donohue
It is a great museum to be sure but kind of overwhelming and without organization. First it's very hard to navigate, it's unclear where various parts of it are and there a few signs. Second there is not a lot of interpretation so it's more like reading a dry college lecture than listening to an engaging story. For example they have a large glass display of various crockery and you kind of wonder, why do I care about this? I spent 2 hours wandering through it today and I don't remember too much of anything beyond the fact that there are lots of pictures. But no doubt for lovers of art and people who are looking for something in particular it will be ideal.
Mark Lawrence
Always enjoyable go every so often as the change exhibits. Took a tour about glass work as art and function as drink use. Educational and very interesting.
Brandon Johnson
Peaceful, art Is only valued by the rich. Art like beauty is in the eye of the beholder , then again what if you're blind? Then how do you judge beauty in art Makes me wonder if such a thing should be judged but Just admired
Omar Parkes
I DJ'd an event there at the cafe inside the museum named Berkins on Main. The venue was as beautiful as the exhibits that I saw on display. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
Deborah Powers
Great place to spend an afternoon. Beautiful works of art.
Cinthia Zuniga
Cool exhibits if you're an art lover. I especially like the many helpers in the hall ready to answer any questions about any piece. Just beautiful.
P.s. those lockers are a lifesaver and the bathrooms are always so cool.
Dhara
A must-see for people in and around Hartford. beautiful art and very helpful staff.
Bill Paglia-Scheff
Very very best place. Worth the trip from anywhere. Very well managed. Clean. Spacious and maintained that way during the pandemic. Every exhibit is stunning.
The made in CT exhibition is remarkable and educational, even having lived here for 50 years plus. Admission was free and is till sometime in Dec 2020 but even at regular Admission pricing is a bargain.
Please go and share in the beauty of CT art and of other masters from around the world.
Gabrielle Biamby
The art work is just stunning and wonderful to see
David Udin
Superb Milton Avery exhibit (temporary). What we saw of the museum's own modern and contemporary art.is also top notch.
Clive LeMasurier
Tremendous art collection. Christmas tree display was not impressive.
Ishan Mehta
It's a beautiful and well curated museum.
Jackie Fretz
A fabulous collection in a space that is much larger than it appears

Not a fan of the Modern Art, but love the really old exhibition paintings and objects there and the architecture. It was a nice experience. Nice bathrooms. And much more enjoyable with classical music on headphones. 😉 …
Christina Ward
First time visiting! Loved everything about this museum. Went specifically for the Milton Avery exhibit which was fantastic! And would definitely go back
DinosaurPaws
I think of this museum as a hidden gem that I found while traveling around the U.S. Definitely worth a visit! It's a gorgeous museum with beautiful pieces inside.
Patricia Corcoran
The visit was very good. Less people in each room so you could stand back from a painting to see it better. Also I didn't realize that they had such master's work.
Michael Banbury
History museum is really quite good. Better than I expected. A beautiful building easy to walk around and a very manageable collection. In addition we had lunch in the cafe and the food was great. I would recommend this excursion to anybody looking to spend some museum time in the Hartford area. It is $12 per adult for admission however.
Asim Ardaman
Infinitely worth more than the entry fee :)) This Wadsworth museum is very well curated.
Lauren
The art is superb and the museum is very clean. However, I felt a bit like a burden visiting. There are arrows on the ground randomly throughout the museum to try to help with traffic due to COVID, which is great. However, they’re not around consistently and I would ask the docents to be gracious in knowing visitors are paying more attention to the art on the walls instead of the arrows on the floor. Additionally, I wasn’t told when entering that we couldn’t take video. A docent let me know of the no video rule so I deleted one I had just taken - no problem. However, later in that same room, I took a panoramic photo. Another docent came to ask if I took a video or panoramic and I clarified for her, and then let her know that I wasn’t told at the front about the no video rule - not to argue that it was a rule, but so that they could perhaps reiterate that at the front. The docent gave me a rude look and then started talking about me with another docent as I was leaving the room. Again, the art was great, though.
Ric Nalette
Impressive collection of everything from the old masters to modern art. We spent 4 hrs wandering the halls and could have spent another 4! Fun, interactive exhibits and kid friendly activities found scattered across the museum's 4 floors and multiple (connected) buildings.
Frequently rotated exhibits mean repeat visits are never boring.
It's worth making plans to see!
Christopher Miller
Nice little art museum. Worth checking out if you're in the area.
Branden Diniz
The building that the museum is in is quite spectacular and inspiring by itself. The exhibits are also great, and numerous. You'll need a full day to visit everything, and a couple if you want to take your time with everything. The Cabinet of Curiosity is just bursting with intriguing artifacts, you could spend hours there alone! Another great exhibit is the massive hall filled with hundreds of paintings from top to bottom, wall to wall; it's awe inspiring!
Koriru Wo
First class art museum with master piece of collection.
Lisa S
This is a wonderful museum. There is a wide variety of art to see. When we were at the museum they had a Gorey exhibit. It was well done and really cool. I also enjoyed the mirror and American art exhibits. I would recommend a visit here if you are in town. I would would return again to see what new things the museum has to offer.
Lydia Witherell
Very beautiful museum. We were there for about 2 hours or so and didn't even get to see a half of the museum. It's very large and well presented. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and answered any questions we had. I definitely recommend!
Ryan N
Attended the opening day on 9/5, first day open since the pandemic. The museum's director Tom Loughman was greeting and chatting with guests. Very personable guy! Plenty of Covid precautions made us feel safe. Me and my significant other spent about 1.5 hours in the museum. Beautiful art! Thank you Tom and the workers of Wadsworth Atheneum!!!
Kiewanna Gonsalves
Majestic place to be .... Plethora of history from around the world.
As well ; as the oldest museum in the United States Diplayed alongside Exquisite, Passionate Art ; even from Hartford and surrounding areas.
Awsome , Christmas events and programs throughout the year for Families!!
Paul Krauskopf
Terrific varied collections. Top flight.
Miosotis Garcia
Love this place i live in hartford for 15 year this was my first time here..
Nice place
Zhiwen Tang
The museum is larger than I expected. You'd better to save half day there. The admission is free 4-5pm.
Kate Davis
Great art, nice layout with lots of light. The restaurant inside is also wonderful! The setup of the museum is easy to figure out. Be sure to grab a map, and then have fun exploring! You can also get your parking validated, so parking is less expensive!
Jeffrey Kinsella-Shaw
We saw the wonderful surrealist exhibit and several rooms of the permanent collection. The exhibition was well hung and perfectly lit, which is truly remarkable given the wide variety in sizes and media on display. The museum was immaculate which was also remarkable given the number of people traipsing through it. The only real challenge was finding parking, which took about 15 minutes. Still definitely worth the effort and time to get their.
Cian O'Riordan
It's okay. Its free so if you're looking to kill some time it's fine. Very strict adherence to "social distancing navigation" around the place, which in and of itself is fine, but if I'm done and just looking to use the bathroom don't make me do a lap to just go through a single doorway, when you're not all that busy anyway. The art is what it is, some great stuff not to my particular taste some stuff that's fine. I'm no aficionado, by any means so more than worth a quick visit if you're curious and have some time. Not much contemporary stuff to choose from.
Micah Coons
I love this museum. Oldest Art museum in the nation, and just a beautiful space in a vibrant part of town. Parking can be tricky, but totally worth any hassle. I try to come here as often as possible. Exhibits change frequently and it 100% transforms that part of the museum. A great collection, really. The Great Hall is just stunning. Plus, area students and Hartford residents get in for free!
P C
The Milton Avery show was a fine exploration of an artist's evolving style. Kudos to everyone who put the exhibition together.
Martin V
Women. More than half of our population, yet so few of them in celebrated art. Makes you wonder if we’re misssing out on life.
I have seen in the Wadsworth that we are. I just couldn’t leave the room with Anguissola, Gentileschi and other great women of the Renaissance. Thanks to the staff for the extra minute past closing, thanks to Wadsworth and their sponsors for bringing this. This is life.
Mark Neidorff
This was my second time at Wadsworth. wonderful staff and displays. I can't say enough about the quality of the exhibits and staff. Both are excellent. Worth the trip.
Raeqwan Jordan
Absolutely a beautiful place to talk with people and learn about art
Estee Axelrad
The museum comprises a traditional building and a modern one, and has a vast range of beautiful pieces of art. You can find pieces by the likes of Picasso, Pollock and Dali, and enjoy different types and styles of fine art. The restaurant is perfect for a meal or light refreshment and offers great food with great service. A wonderful place to spend a day.
G Aquino
We were here for three hours! The collection is impressive for its volume, diversity, and scope and the museum itself is quite notable for being the oldest public art museum in the country. With so many art pieces to look at, the experience can be overwhelming so plan to have mini-breaks in between galleries. Be sure to also grab a map at the entrance to help you navigate the labyrinthian space.
Street parking is available nearby and we didn't have any difficulty finding a spot on a Sunday morning.
Elvis Hayes
Good history and paintings plus venues be going on outside
M. Showers
A must-see visitors museum. A local favorite that many locals fail to enjoy to its fullest offering. The many galleries provide great viewing of rotating exhibitions and permanent ones.
Plenty of transportation options afford easy access to this great location in downtown Hartford. Free coat room services and nice cafe.
Rachel
I loved the amount of art here! And it was all placed so well. My husband and I also came during the second Saturday event and admission was free. There was a lot of activities for children throughout and while we don't have kids of our own we are going to recommend it to our friends who do.
Andrew Popow
You wouldn't expect such a well thought-out and extensive collection to be in the city, but it is honestly a must stop even if you are in Hartford for 24 hours. I will say the layout of the museum makes it a bit hard to navigate and see everything, but this was the only negative aspect about the location. Otherwise, this museum has attentive security/staff and has great exhibits.
Lisa Andrews
We went here as kids and were impressed then. As an adult we were even more impressed. Great artwork enough variety for everyone to enjoy. We went the day after Thanksgiving to view the decorated Christmas trees. The trees are decorated by all sorts of schools, organization and the elderly. The results from all their work is impressive. The decorated trees and wreaths are for sale. The most spectacular part... a room with a Lego display. A train set with a T-Rex, iconic places and just all kinds of hidden things. The other part of the room has all kinds of bldgs made from Legos. The Santa shop has so many neat things to look at that you could be there for hours.
Santos Borges
Impressive art. Feels nice to be literally standing in the first built Art Museum in America.
Kyle Sheehan
Really enjoyed the exhibits especially the more modern arts, but besides that the architecture of the museum itself is worth a visit alone, beautiful building.
Lauren Ijomah
Their free "2nd Saturdays" are such an amazing gift to the community. I've been bringing my 3-year-old daughter since she was old enough to walk. They do kid-friendly crafts and sometimes have live music. It's been incredible to see my daughter get more and more into the art on display as she gets older. I love that the Wadsworth provides this opportunity to introduce children to art in such a positive way. The staff are always friendly and helpful. I do wish the cafe had kid-friendly options but there are other good lunch options in and around Hartford. My family will be visiting this museum for many years to come.
Mara VanGogh
Great art pieces! Was alot bigger than I originally thought.
James Mandala
There was so much to see here that I went out for a quick lunch and returned to see more. Though famous for it's collection of Hudson River School paintings there is a lot more to see. The building is oddly broken up so get a map or you will miss some. I recommend parking in the garage listed on the museums website and get it validated on the museum to avoid expensive parking in the city.
Jeffrey Lynch
Fantastic collection with some unexpected pieces from big names. Friendly docents and staff. Easy to get to, and even when they start charging admission again, we will definitely come back and spend some more time here.
Alex Dowlen
A much better museum than I expected it to be! We came in after 3 so it was free entry. They have many big name artist's such as Dali and Monet, but there were far fewer people than somewhere like MOMA or the Met. It was a really great experience.
Will Koehrsen
A stellar art museum with pieces spanning thousands of years and representing cultures from around the globe. Whatever your taste in art - from ancient sculpture to impressionist paintings to contemporary pieces - you can find something to appreciate in this museum. I highly recommend the Wadsworth Atheneum and it is one if not the top attraction in Hartford. The museum has such a wide array of pieces it can be almost overwhelming, and I found the tours (free with admission) to be a great way to get oriented!
Arno Jullien
A great museum and a must-see in CT, very nice collection inc. Picasso, Chagall, Magritte, Miro and more. Unexpected and really nice. Have a rest at the café it's worth it as well. The staff in the museum and the café are great too! Well done and keep up the great work everyone!!
Nives Dolsak
Friends recommended we visit it and it was wonderful. I just wished I could see their watercolors that were not exhibited, but it is nice to have something to look forward to for the next visit. Their exhibit on Church, his travels in the Middle east was spectacular.
Jolie P.
This is by far one of my favorite museums and I've been to a lot. (MOCA is also really good). They have art dedicated to controversial issues, political issues, race, sex, and more. They also incorporate the architecture and art so that they match and collaborate, thus creating specific atmospheres for each room. A very impressive museum!
Chitra K
Good collection & well placed exhibits.
Tim
Incredible exhibits from all over the world. Amazing works of art everywhere you look. And incredible Saturday on their free Second Saturday program. The whole family found works of art they were drawn to. Amazing amount of local history.
P Mac
I absolutely love this place! Other than the fact that they seemed shocked to see me come in, I ran in to no other black people (doesn't bother me) and they kept reminding me of the free times, but I'm a veteran and this museum lets us in for free anyways (I assumed they were just being polite) I had to visit this place twice in order to see everything! (That and there is a two hour parking limit) This is a must see! It's so beautiful, the African American photos made me sad since no one knew who they were or who took the photos but hey, that was a sad time in America. I'll be back with my children! And the fries in the cafe were delicious!! Better than the burger haha
Richard Gates
A real gem of a museum. It's bigger than you would expect and contains some diverse collections of amazing and treasures. It is probably less well-known than some of the other big city art museums, and consequently is less busy which makes it very pleasant to visit.
Dan Garcia
Great little art museum. I particularly like the big hall of old European paintings and the curiosities cabinet room - It was fun to explore
Torrilynn Walton
Second Saturday's are my favorite at this venue. Admission is free from 10am-1pm on the 2nd Saturday if the month. You can view the museum and create arts & crafts with your little ones and with friends. We always find something new & exciting in this historic museum.
Melissa Freeman
Even though we are members of the museum and visit it often, we decided to take one of the guided tours and we were happy that we did. The tour highlighted some of the treasures in the museum like the recently acquired Poppies by Van Gogh and the beautiful La Vecchio on loan to the museum. Just a wonderful museum that we love to visit over and over. I would highly recommended these guides tour talks.
Chunfen Zhou
This art museum is not encyclopedic in scope (mostly European and American artworks, with some objects from the Antiquity and a very small Asian gallery) but the quality of its collections is superb. Beautiful architecture as well.
John Holchin
The matrix gallery is always featuring a new contemporary artist. The museum has a large Hudson River School collection, nice landscapes. I enjoy the parts of the collection showing Hartford history, like the stuff from the Colt family. Be sure to check out the audio tours.
Lin Lufkin
Beautiful old museum, great collection, very affordable admission. The current Surrealism exhibit is well curated and a rare opportunity to see amazing examples of the movement together. So happy I went!
Trung Tieu
It's the longest continuously running Art Museum in America!
Great breadth of art and the a good size so that you don't get overwhelmed by any particular art style.
Also, if you have the right type of membership with the Walker Art Center, you'll have reciprocity to this museum too!
Jeff
Oldest continuously operating art museum in US... Fantastic buildings... new exhibits monthly with famous touring collections every 3 months or so. Free tours by knowledgeable docents at 1 or 2 PM each day.
Joe Markley
Why fight the traffic and the crowds in Boston or New York when there's a great art collection in Hartford that (alas!) is never crowded? The sheer quantity doesn't match the Met or MFA, but the quality is exceptional and the breadth surprising. The American holdings are predictably excellent, with plenty of glorious Hudson River paintings, primitives placed with the Colonial furniture, Copley and Earl, Inness and Ryder, our native Impressionists, right up through Hartley, Milton Avery, and my favorite-ever O'Keeffe to Pollock and the New York school.
But then there's a surprising selection of outstanding 16th and 17th century Italian art, plenty from 19th century France, and more than a sprinkling of gems from almost all times and places--outstanding work by artists as various as Fra Angelico, Cranach, Caravaggio, Zurbaran, Bronzino, Klimt, and arguably the greatest works of Holman Hunt and Max Ernst.
Which is to say, if you like art, go; and if you want to try out a museum, this is a good place to start. Unless there's a popular exhibition on--and that hasn't happened for a while--this is a very quiet place. That's a shame for the institution and a lost opportunity, but a pleasure for those who take advantage of the chance.
Shivkumar DESHMUKH
Must visit !!!
Its a great museum, one should visit.
Great historic paintings.
Edward Horn
Something has gone very wrong in one of America's great museums. To begin with, the parking garage is now closed on weekends. WHAT! If you are coming from New York you are at the mercy of limited street parking. The once fine restaurant had become little more than a mediocre sandwich shop. This is still one of the country's great art collections, and it should be a major tourist destination, but no one in charge seems to want to make it one.
Mike VA
For a smaller art gallery, they have a good variety of art and displays. They also put on special exhibitions fairly regularly.
Anthony McCann
We're talking world class art museum right here in downtown Hartford, CT. Amazes me that our own resident's allow year after year, feature expositions, coveted works secured repeatedly and our citizenship walks, rides by and dare not to enter this adventure in paintings, art works, and highly sought after famous works that are second to none. Don't you and your family be guilty of voluntarily ignoring a very important aspect of well roundedness in education and culture by letting another visiting artist works or 1st class social being held at our place. Be there soon and leave asking yourself, "what took me so long". Best outing for your families cultural development awaits. Cost? Many exhibits are FREE, esp. for Hartford students and residents.
Laurie Bonjo
Great museum-- lots of contemporary and modern stuff. Easy to park. Not so big that you get swallowed up, but you can spend a day and not be too tired for drinks and dinner afterward.
Dylan “Snowjedi6” Jacob Chin
Truly an incredible museum, I honestly loved every part. Such a diverse collection of art from around the world and throughout History. The Morgan Great Hall was a completely breathtaking sight.
Elizabeth Vargas-Negron
Beautiful museum and it's free if you are a Hartford recident.
Peter Nowak
Really great museam. Students get in free with a school ID, otherwise you have to pay to enter (~$15 per person). They have artwork from a wide variety of styles, eras, and nationalities. What I found to be especially interesting was there collection of American landscape paintings. They have work from a ton of famous artists such as Dali, Klempt, Van Gogh, Boticelli, and many others. Really great place to spend an afternoon. I believe they also offer guided tours if interested.
Sherene Hansen Player
Amazing art museum with an incredible collection. Wish we would have had more time there for our visit.
David G
Great visit. Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Renoir, and many more. Not a fan of modern art. But if you like it some pieces were interesting. We took the guided tour. It was ok. If you take the tour just ignore some of the personal views of the guide.
Gervaise Weir
I was able to take in the pieces with live music and clearly labeled spaces for standing. The flow of traffic was well managed and the staff are polite. Hand sanitizer is readily available in all spaces which is very important since we are in a pandemic.
Terri Wilson
Beautiful art museum with lots to see and enjoy. Good for all ages. Just go!
Sean McGovern
The exhibits are okay, nothing really special lately. It's the staff that makes the place a good visit. Polite docents/gallery staff and visitors services staff are well trsined

This is a beautiful and totally unexpected GEM. The way the artwork is displayed in the Morgan Gallery is in the grand manner of the best museums in Europe, and thru out there is a beautiful representation of many great masters. This museum overall is a second tier collection that is excellent. There are pieces, of course, that ARE first tier, such as those by Klimt. Of great interest is the magnificent Artemisia Gentileschi’s “Self-Portrait as a Lute Player” (ca. 1615–18). It is good for to see female painters whose work survived. There is on display a solitary gown by Parisian design house Worth believed to have belonged to Countess Sophie Petrovna Shouvaloff Benckendorff (1837–1928). One need not see more than this one gown, it is a museum of stitchery in and of itself! We had lunch at the very chic Cafe which is really a full sit down restaurant. The Soupe du Jour was butternut Squash. It was the best I have ever tasted... and I am a bit of a nut about butternut. We found the Bookstore to be delightful, mostly because of the two young ladies who worked there with such incredible enthusiasm AND knowledge about every trinket, book, postcard with regard to how it related to an exhibit past, present or upcoming! First time I have ever experienced that in a museum bookstore! It was so cute, and so appreciated. How rare these days that ANY salesperson has passion about being at work, about looking the customer in the eye! These two ladies get A+. Regarding tickets: Local libraries give free admission passes to this wonderful museum.
Chris Rakoczy
While it's probably not ideal for children, it was still a good experience for my art-minded 7yo. It's a great museum with lots of nooks and rooms and a wide variety of art from old masters to local contemporaries.
Morgan
One of the best art museums in the country. Street parking is free on weekends although a little challenging in Hartford, admittance is free for people under 18 and only $5 for college students with an ID. This museum is one of the best places you can see in this city if you're interested in world famous artists like Van Gogh, Monet, Dali, Pollock, and don't have a crazy travel budget.
Joseph Annino
A first class museum without the huge crowds so you can take your time to really appreciate the works. An encyclopedic collection including many big names, in a beautiful architectural space, curated to show the breadth of creativity through the centuries.
Tatiana Fonseca
This museum does not get enough credit for the caliber of museum that it is. Full of significant works in historic buildings. The temporary exhibitions are often on the cutting edge of the art scene, and the programs that they provide open up the art world to the larger community.
Jin Pyer
The best place to have a first date or just have a great time with your significant other
Phylis Iqbal
I haven't been to the Wadsworth in a long time, but it truly is a great place to visit. They have a lot of interesting exhibits there and it is free to visit from 4-5. One of Hartford's best cultural things to do.
Tim Malone
A good size with a ncely varied collection. They have something for everyone. Nothing earth shattering, but a solid collection. I wish they had more photography though. The space is also very nice and rarely feels too crowded. The building is beautiful and pretty unique as well. Worth a visit.
Ziyad T
Good art collection. Park at the south garage and pay just 3 dollars.
Julie Christianson
America's oldest art gallery? Yes. There are some amazing pieces of art that you wouldn't expect to find in little old Hartford here. Also, go for the festival of trees, it's a wonderful holiday event.
Anne
A wonderful museum. Great collection! You can get free admission by getting a ticket from your public library ahead of time. It will cost you $3 for parking.
Joey Adcock
I am so glad I was able to visit this place and view the great examples of Colonial art, furniture, and history. Definitely worth a visit. Check your local library for free tickets to avoid paying for entry.
Sonji Patrick
Had never been there or even heard of it before this trip. It is a really nice art museum showcasing a variety of collections -- paintings, sculptures, antique furnishings, etc. -- and we saw a Rembrandt (plus contempoaries) exhibit that was really good.
Rob Kilpatrick
One of the best art museums in New England. They have an amazing collection. From rustic furniture to surrealist paintings. Well worth the price of admission.
Ted S
The Wadsworth is the oldest art museum in the United States. They have exciting new exhibits in their rotation with a more permanent collection of more classical works. Last year's Coney Island exhibit was fantastic. If you live in CT or Western MA would need to take the time to enjoy this wonderful place.
Kimarie Cuthbert
Lovely. Calm .clean educational
Bryan Kelly
I only wish more people knew how glorious this museum is. Looking forward to the many trips in the future. My family loves the Welcomed
Hartford campaign they have now where Hartford residents are provided free admission.
Marcia Lahens
I love this museum. It's a gem, that flies way too far under the radar. They have some wonderful pieces. If you're I, the Hartford area go. If not, plan a trip. You won't be sorry.
Marie De Leon
There's no parking and you'll have a really hard time finding parking on the Street. The people inside were really nice and they make their best to show you around and explain, totally loved it!
Ravindra Vangipuram
Had been here long time back. It's a good size art museum with so many art exhibits at one place. Was initially reluctant to go but after visiting this place, have enjoyed a lot.
Matthew Cross
I have visited many museums in New York and New England. This is one of the best. My only complaint is that they should really encourage their non-docent staff (servers at the restaurant and security) to learn more about the art. I think education is one of the Atheneum's big things and they have neglected those people the public are most likely to be in contact with.
Robert Bentley
Excellent small art collection covering European, American, and Asian, from ancient to modern. Some of the finest works of the Hudson Valley School are among the highlights. Well worth a stop if you're in Hartford.
Wing Na Wong
I love all the portrait paintings in this musuem, I can spend the whole day in here!
John Walenczyk
This place is a gem. They have the largest collection of Hudson River School paintings in the world which makes this a must visit for any fan of American art. If you are a fan of art in general you really need to come here.
Christopher J
A great collection of Baroque painters, Two Picassos, a Dali or two. Nice architecture, and a long history. We only had a brief visit, but will be back.
Rosanne Shea
Always a beautiful experience
Amy McDivitt
Incredible museum with a great array of artworks. The flow of the museum was very safe and in accordance with COVID-19 safety guidelines.
Robert Condon
Art museums have become so large that museums like the Wadsworth Athenaeum are now considered small. But the Wadsworth is a great museum. It has recently been renovated and expanded and many more art objects are now on display such as ceramics, glass, statues and lots more. The two story hall now has paintings hung in parlour style with one above others. There much more to see. They have pay what you wish on the second Saturday of the month. I park at the convention center and walk over to the Wadsworth. The museum is not open on Monday and Tuesday so plan your visit to Hartford accordingly. Be very careful where you park because one of Hartford's nicknames is tow-town. There is a very good gift store with a new Scala monogram about the Wadsworth collection. Enjoy.
Verdant Girl
Lots of museum guides to direct traffic and enforce social distancing and share information about the collections. Went yesterday January 2nd and it was busy but not overwhelmingly so.
Amanda West
The Wadsworth always has something worth seeing. The variety there is refreshing. I love the Baroque section and the collection of contemporary artists is a feast for thought. Only draw back is the on street paid parking.
Ahuvah Amy Loewenthal
Weekdays 4-5 is free admission. I arrived in Hartford around 4, so I had just a quick visit.
The Tap on Wadsworth website gives interesting short recordings about selected works. I enjoyed a few galleries, especially a great George Innes work "Autumn Gold."
Gift shop was fun to quickly browse.
I'd like to come back with more time.
By the way, there are free lockers, where I stashed my heavy daypack.
Chelsea Hare
This icon in our community show cases all kinds , mediums and time periods of art. It has be visited by myself and students I work with many times over. I grew up as a young teen participating in greater Hartford of the arts summer work programs hosted in Wadsworth Antheum. It's a pillar in it's arts community providing free admission to Hartford residents.
Joelle Yammine
For the amount of artwork this place contains, many of which are by famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Pissaro, Monet, Dali, Lewitt, it does not get enough credit.
It also has many contemporary and classical pieces. It's unexpectedly large, and so underrated.
MAY FRIDAY
Great special and permanent exhibits. Family friendly and staff is excellent. A must visit!!
Laketa Joseph
The overall experience was okay. The staff was very friendly and helpful when needed. I was just looking for more cultural art exhibits. I was upset I missed the Amistad exhibit that would have been interesting.
张羡智
Waiting for my Peter Pan bus, I stopped by this museum to kill time. But I found lots of masterpieces of arts here. I'm a fan of Vincent van Gogh, and I saw his authentic work here! Brilliant, awesome, Excellent!!!
Carmine Esposito
Beautiful building, wonderful Christmas tree/wreath exhibit, nice live holiday music, interesting art and artifacts I'm really not a museum person, but I had a good time.
Natalie Tegtmeier
Great paintings and docent were able to answer my questions
Kitty Slaughter
Love this collection! Really fantastic museum with a large variety of piece from all over. It was great going there and they were part of the museums on us from BofA!
Justin LaLiberty
One of the best things about living in CT is proximity to this museum which is one of the best and most accessible art museums I’ve ever been to.
Gail Bailey
The Wadsworth Atheneum is a fine mid-size museum with interesting exhibits and a good permanent collection spanning centuries of art, but, if you've experienced some of the renowned museums of the world, it may be a bit of a letdown. If you're from out of state and find yourself in the Hartford area, it's worth a visit.
adriana burgos
The art was wonderful but I'll never be okay being treated rudely by the security staff. So if you like to be treated like a thug for legitimately just walking around sure have fun! :)
Jesse Moy
This place is awesome
Got some hot babe just laying in the middle of the floor there waiting to be talked to.
Aside from that, the galleries are nice, spatious, and artistic!
S
For this visit, the Wadsworth museum front had a giant "OMG" installation, which was interesting. The entirety of the bright, modern, spacious facility was jam packed with an eclectic range of work from many different artists and time periods, including Picasso and Dali. The trompe l'oeil and the painting including a cat with a bow tie were personal favorites of this art lover. A unique mobile phone supplement tour was available via a special website, and the museum has free WiFi. Parking was challenging; if you go on the weekend, street parking is free! I ended up parking a block away, but hoofing it over wasn't bad. One of the entrances was closed for construction.
Ronald DeRobertis
It is always a fun and interesting museum to go to
They always have new exhibits and the staff is always polite and actually are interested in helping you if you haven't been here you should put it on your to do list .

Lisa Vaughn
Always a pleasure to spend a rainy day at this museum. Enjoying the Festival of Trees this visit.
Megan Stevenson
The gem of Hartford! The collection here is insane and the interior of the museum is beautiful. Great old works and a collection of Calder. I would highly recommend stopping here if you're in town.
Patrick Smith
Amazing collection of art from the distant past to the present. Friendly staff, plenty of parking in the area, free admission due to Covid so book your time on line.
Adam Protter
Fantastic museum with a wonderful collection located centrally in Hartford. I visited for a class project and I learned quite a lot! I can't wait to go back and spend a proper amount of time.
Cynthia Racicot
Went to the recent brunch with band Bassology. It was an incredible event. The food, music and setting were incredible. The singer Danielle Valentine's voice filled the room
Susan Rubner
This place was wonderful! Small, doable museum with interesting art. Great gift shop and lovely outdoor cafe. Also, indoor restaurant.
Jim Meehan
I went in, intending to stay about an hour and see what they had. Three hours later, I wasn't nearly done. It's a fantastic collection, particularly for modern art. I'll go back, the next time I'm in Hartford.

A lot of great experiences and scenes to discover. There's some cool vantage points looking through the main foyer from upper levels (kind of guggenheim-esk). The current (feb 18) Edward Gorey exhibition had some gems.

Little scattered in terms of what they have but I suppose it's an individual's collection. The central gallery, while impressive in terms of what they could fit in there (they even have a video of the construction), makes about half the pieces difficult to appreciate.
