Reviews of Hirshhorn Museum

The staff are very nice, professional and friendly.
The guards do not shout at people, which is awesome (other museums in DC, guards shout at you for random rules of the museum which is extremely unprofessional).
The kids activities the museum has every couple moths are really entertaining and keep the kids busy for at least 20~25 mins.
The exhibits are few but some are interactive, well laid out and interesting.
There’s a small coffee shop with a few pastries on the first floor as well.
Will def be back!
Jessica Sun
We only had time to walk through the Laurie Anderson exhibit, but it was dually chilling and perspective-altering. I would especially recommend stopping and really reading and thinking through everything. Something truly intriguing was the AI-written version of the Bible. Reading about the “animal friend” gave me shivers. Overall really cool experience!

I think all museums should be built as big circles like this or the Guggenheim -- it just makes them so pleasant and easy to navigate.
Building aside, this museum was fantastic. The galleries were very well curated and thematically organized, with a nice range of pieces.
The facade is currently under construction but the museum is open, though when I visited the second floor was closed for installations. The kusama exhibition currently on the first floor is awesome, though it's definitely best to show up early or at a weird time to avoid lines, and you only get about a minute in the mirror rooms (it's still worth it!).

It was under renovation but you still can visit and enjoy art show inside without being distracted by. The Marcel Duchamp legacy exhibit “It’s Art If I Say So” was informative and interesting, if you plan your next visit, pay attention on the white toilet that was almost mentioned in some of the artworks. Can you count how many are they? 😉 Don’t miss out the drawing your shadow in “Call it A Little Game Between ’I’ and ‘Me’” exhibit.
While you walk between exhibits, don’t forget to feel the Mark Bradford “Pickett’s Charge” that goes around the building.
Check on the Laurie Anderson “The Weather” Exhibition! It was a breathtaking!
Also don’t forget to stop by the lower level exhibit of Barbara Kruger “Belief + Doubt” around the shop area.
And when you leaving to the Sculpture Garden, don’t be surprised of the wide coffee tables from tree root in the lobby! Awesome!

My favorite museum in DC! I love that the exhibits change out and you can revisit it months later and it can be whole new art. It was pretty crowded though for a Saturday, so plan accordingly. I used to work nearby and used to go there on my lunch sometimes and enjoyed eating my lunch in the court yard. It's big but not overwhelming. It's such a diverse group of eclectic thought provoking art from varioua artists.
Seth Grossman
An incredible museum which is currently undergoing some renovations, but is still worth the visit! Like the Guggenheim in NYC, the shape of the building itself plays into the experience; each exhibit following the curve of the building and leading you through its treasures. A perfect example was Mark Bradford's "Pickett's Charge" which was created specially for this space. Besides the building itself being part of the museum experience, each floor is like its own separate tiny museum, focusing on one artist's work or one subject. It is a well used space for a somewhat smaller sized museum.
And the experience can be enhanced and enlightened depending upon the specific exhibit. However, the Duchamp exhibit was informative and just okay.
If you get a chance, go to see Laurie Anderson's "The Weather" - I was absolutely blown away by this entire exhibit. Most of my pictures are from one room of this exhibit, but all of the rooms were an experience. I was not expecting anything and was touched and impressed by every section of the exhibit. Check it out!
Also check out the cool tables in the lobby built using the cross section of a tree's root system; beautiful!

A must if you travel to Washington !!
Museum of Modern Art with of course exhibitions that change during the year, and for my part I had the chance to see the exhibition of Yayoi Kusama.
The different exhibitions are on several floors and the permanent collection is on the last floor. There are very interesting pieces from artists mostly American but also from around the world.
There are also different installations such as video or playful installations with participants in certain works.
The museum shop is also very well supplied with very good books or very good souvenirs to bring back.
And all this of course for a very low price since the entrance is free.
Claire Hamilton
Great experience! I think this particular showing is temporary but it was easy for us to get free tickets that gave us a time slot to go through. The rest of the museum doesn't need a ticket so you can walk around and see everything else until you time slot too.
Erica J Myers
I had always wanted to visit the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. This time I had my chance. I have some mobility issues, but this venue is handicap accessible, with ramps, escalators, and elevators. You will need to check any bags that you bring in. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And that was just having my bag checked on the entrance. The exhibit was exquisite. There are other exhibits as well. Some of these have a grey stripe on the floor. Do not pass these stripes, because it is an alarm. It's for the protection of the artwork, but the grey stripes are hard to see. (My husband stepped on one by accident). I really enjoyed the flow of this museum. You can easily move from one display to another. The only thing I wish it that there were more bathrooms. I had to leave from the top floor to get to the bathroom in the basement.
Tips: If you have timed tickets, get there 15-30 minutes ahead of time. Leave the snacks in the car. L'Enfant Plaza has plenty of parking and is nearby, but it's expensive ($30 on a Sunday). Be prepares to spend a lot of time (so comfy shoes). Have a great time and remember, if you have kids, ask them how they feel/what they are thinking about what they see. I will take my niece and nephew here one day.

The architecture of this building in itself is cool! It's a circular shape with the middle being empty. It gives the exhibits a different angle and in some areas, you don't even notice. The exhibits were very cool! There was a good variety of history mixed with art. Entry is free. Staff were friendly.
Krista Lorenzo, Realtor
Super cool museum! Loved the exhibits. Really neat way to view it with the circular building. Beautiful! Loved the outdoor sculpture garden too! Our family really enjoyed this museum!
Jesse Lynn
We came specifically for the Kusama exhibit with our boys (6 & 9). The tickets need to be picked up day of visit in the morning, it was an easy process. It was a great exhibit to introduce abstract and visual art. We also walked the sculpture garden and had lunch at the cafe there which is a good option.
Gary Seybold
The Laurie Anderson exhibit was simply awesome! It’s so good! This woman is a genius and I am so glad I saw her work here! If you have the chance to see it you should. You will not be disappointed.
James Barton
"As busy as it can be," which is a rating I've never seen before. This is a great art museum for people who don't like art (or the enlightened). This is all "modern" art, and mostly temporary exhibits (except for the sculpture garden, which seems to not change much).
Amber Moreland
I loved this museum! My favorite part was the Laurie Anderson exhibit, it was amazing. It really made me stop and think. It def gave a lot to ponder on! The staff members were friendly and the coffee I got in the lobby was my favorite coffee of the weekend! I can’t wait to visit again!
John
Super interesting art exhibits. Just like many of the museums here, entrance is free. But I would make sure to check if you need tickets for certain exhibits as some require tickets that are given on a first-come-first-served basis.
Raymond Luong
The Laurie Anderson exhibit was incredible. Very interesting and thought-provoking.
Highly recommend this museum if you’re looking to go on an artistic journey and escape the crowds and screaming children at some of the other more popular museums.
Alexa Bragg
So much fun, great for a day date. We went when there was absolutely no crowds, we were one of the only people there. Art was amazing! There was something for everyone. Art to walk and pass by and art to sit and stare at for awhile. As a note though, there was lots of nudity and some graphic images in some exhibits.
Clarice B.
Very interesting Museum, the building itself is a piece of Modern Art. Temporary exhibitions are really nice, I went to the Yayoi Kusama one and found the experience awesome! However, temporary exhibitions normally need to scheduled in advance and places are limited (tickets are available by 9:30 a.m. at the front desk)
PiinkLady B
Great day trip!
The sculpture garden was nice, great for photos.
Yayoi Kusama portion was interactive, but it was definitely short and sweet! Top floor was open and we enjoyed the contemporary art.
Other exhibits were under construction at the time.
Valerie Rose
Attended the Yayoi Kusama Eternity exhibition and was not disappointed. Arrived early to reserve tickets, entrance to museum is off to the side due to construction. Guests are allowed 1 minute inside each infinity mirror rooms- older kid friendly, imho. The garden walkway on the side of the museum offered a shady place to sit and many flowers to look at!
Logemann Wissanee
They did a good job for the presentation of the art works. It just wasn't my style. I appreciate the free entrance of this art museum. If you are visiting this area and are looking for something to do, this is it.
Dottie Riley
Went to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. you need to reserve tickets the day before at noon. They have lockers to put your bags in not allowed in. Very fun exhibit I enjoyed it!
Charles-Stephen Laubhouet
Great place, i went especially for the yayoi kusama exhibit. Loved every bit of it. The museum has other stuff too but this is what i really liked, also the staff and security ladies are awesome and super helpful!
Rebekah Horne
I took my kids to see the museum on Wednesday and they liked it so well we went through the exhibits twice. Then they asked to return again the next day. The Kusama and Anderson exhibits are wonderful! I couldn't recommend them enough. Both exhibits my teens loved, which is uncommon for them to be so excited about art.
Adriana Rakshana
The Yayoi Kusama exhibit is nice but honestly not necessarily worth it for the ticket wait? Pretty instagrammable though, if that means anything to you. If you live in DC, maybe wait for a couple months before visiting perhaps? If you're planning to visit anytime soon, maybe try and line up at 8/8:30ish. We visited at the end of March and the tickets sold out by 10:30, so plan accordingly! Outside of that, the Marcel Duchamp and the Laurie Anderson exhibits are pretty decent!
Abi M.
The museum's exterior is currently under renovation but it is open to visitors and the exhibits, especially Laurie Anderson's "The Weather" & Mark Bradford's "Pickett's Charge" are awesome!
grace north
Loved walking through and looking at all of the pieces here. I especially loved the outdoor sculptures. Unfortunately, my group came pretty close to closing and we’re unable to see the full sphere of the museum. However our hour was well spent and we had a great time exploring.
greg hakala
Phenomenal visit to see the yayoi kusama visit. Arrived at 10:15am for the free allotted tickets and was able to grab 2 for 11:45am. Seems if you go in morning should be able to get tickets for that day, none are online.
Olga Sokolova
It is a nice museum with progressive exhibits.
The building itself has a round shape. Per ancient theory of architecture (Hindu) it is a place of energy. Stay there for couple of minutes and experience the energy flow from the sky. Enjoy!
The Hunter
I know very little about art but we were in DC and doing the Smithsonian thing and I read online that many locals call this their favorite and many call this an undiscovered gem. One entire floor was closed due to renovations but what we saw was interesting and the current exhibit of Yayoi Kusama was one of the highlights of the trip. Her two rooms are truly mind-blowing.The sculpture gardens is worth a leisurely jaunt as well
You do need to get a separate 5icket for the Kusama exhibit. Timed entry. I would go there first thing when they open to procure that ticket. Ticket is free.
Isabel Berdeja
One of my favorite DC museums, it’s free!
Saturday and Sunday get pretty packed, so make sure to arrive early if you want to avoid crowds. Also, tickets for special exhibits sometimes ran out, so if you’re looking to see one of those, book the tickets in advance (they’re still free, they just use them to manage the amount of people in the exhibit)
Misch
Very interesting place! Nice and interesting art here from sculptures to paintings to murals and other interesting artworks. Heck, even the architecture of the building itself is an interesting work of art! I took these photos at the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020. Only problem is that it gets overcrowded here, but it is definitely worth a visit when it reopens soon, so keep checking back on that! Oh yes, and I almost forgot to mention that they have a large human-sized color wheel gallery that you can walk around, which I included in one of my photos.
Kathy W
This museum is great for kids on weekends as there were 3 booths set up for hands on experience and story time reading. We got there shortly after its opened at 10am and got timed passes for the YAYOI KUSAMA exhibit but cannot get in until 12:45pm. We could not use the passes as the assigned time did not work for us (too late in the day for kids to eat and nap). Therefore we were a bit disappointed and may try again later in the year.
Jan Pokorný
The exhibition One with Eternity from Kusama is really fun and unique. However is quite small, so I recommend to go off peak hours otherwise you will wait a lot.
We had a problem at first to get a ticket because the staff did not really care, but then they have switched and the other guy was super helpful and friendly.
R Lin
I never want to give a Smithsonian less than 5 stars, because they are all unique and deserving of starlet recognition in their own right, but the way I felt so disappointed after leaving here is only fair for me to be honest.
It seems that I came to visit Hirshhorn at the worst possible time. It was August 2021 and the entire outside cylinder is covered in metal platforms for renovation. Inside, there was only one floor open with exhibits to walk through (out of at least 3 floors, I think there was maybe 4) and even then there was at least one section where it was literally an empty room and nothing at all.
The sole floor we got to see was okay. I would describe a lot of it as super modern art- like, the type that’s so modern and interpretive you question if it’s actually art. It was cool to read the thoughts behind some of them for more context, but to be honest most of it just lost me. But that’s really more personal and I wouldn’t knock that ever on the artists.
My favorite part was the interactive exhibit. I can’t remember the artist’s name, but they had a collection on silhouettes, so as the visitor we got to create our own silhouettes and hang them up. Super cool. You rarely get the interaction like that in those big museums.
Another issue: the gift shop and cafe were not open when we went. The cafe didn’t even look like it had kitchen furniture in it or was even close to ready.
I’d say the best part was the sculpture garden. Seriously, that was really neat and a fun walkthrough. I really think I came at a terrible time and I’d consider coming back later when it’s all done renovating, yet at the same time I don’t want to be disappointed again. But I’d still say this is lower on the museum priority list no matter.
Beverly (Beverly)
This is one of my favorite museums. They present unique artworks. The outdoor sculptures are nice and definitely worth a visit. There is a coffee bar that serves delicious coffee and has and overall cool vibe. At the moment an artwork called "Draw the Curtain", is installed on the museum. I love it. I went to see the Yayoi Kusama's "One with Eternity". Her work is mesmerizing, creative, beautiful, and more. Your eyes know what she has done but your mind takes you somewhere else. It's magnificent. I always have to pause when looking at her work. There also two new artist works on view, Laurie Anderson and Toyin. These works are very exciting and unique. Highly recommend this museum.
Beata Krowicka
Great modern art Museum with Kusama’s installations and great Museum store. I loved also the exhibition about Guerilla Girls. And the perfect thing is it’s completely free
Jonathan Schroeder
Went for the “One with Eternity” exhibit. Super cool! Would definitely recommend catching it while it’s still there.
The rest of the museum is a little too modern for my taste; but definitely a place to check out, if that’s your thing. Staff are super nice!
YoMags “Mags”
The Laurie Anderson exhibition was an outstanding adventure. If you can catch it it will be fun for the whole family.
Joseph Shakal
Typical big city art museum. This one has a special display featuring a Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Nothing spectacular.
Amanda Cropper
Who doesn't love weird, subversive art? This place is DC's MoMA...minus the entry fee (thanks fellow taxpayers). Book the entry tickets for the Yayoi Masuma exhibit. Trippy and worth planning for it.
L
We got there early at 9:30a to get tickets. The line was long, but moved quickly. Our tickets were for 12:15p. It was well worth the wait.
Amelia Buchele
Love that the museum is free and accessible to all, though the kusama special exhibit requires timed entry. Only one floor had galleries open when we went (the second floor had a new exhibit being installed) but there was still enough that I was glad I went.
Ali Algermozi
Very artistic experience 👌 lots of walking around to do to get to see everything.
Danika Okpaleke
Finally made it to the Yayoi Kusama exhibit! Make sure you reserve tickets at 12pm sharp the day before. Easier if you’re online at a desktop by 11:59am. Very well organized and clean! Staff was knowledgeable and kind.
Brian Johnson
To date one of my favorite modern art museums in DC, the collection of pieces are very cohesive amongst each other
Penny Isolampi
We were able to get tickets for Yayoi Kusama exhibition. It was 😍. I also really enjoyed the rest of the museum.
OuterSpaceLace
I have not been to this museum in probably 12 years so I figured I would give it another shot. I am glad it is free because I would have been upset if I paid. I am not a huge fan of modern art so that does sway my option and I understand that. This museum is relatively small and you can get through it in an hour or less. The outside is currently under construction but the inside was fine. It is clean and the staff was friendly. I will say, a lot of the art was unappealing and made no sense. I am aware that is a big point of "modern art" but it is a little ridiculous what they call art in this museum. I was simply not captivated or drawn to any of the exhibits. If you like things that make no sense, weird photographs, random items thrown together as a "statue", short films that make no sense, and things that you think you could do but are somehow in a museum- this place is for you!
Eileen Finn
Inspiring exhibits. Make sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time to visit the infinity rooms.
andre perkins
Had a fascinating time on a short break. Invested the entire time viewing (and hearing) the Laurie Anderson exhibit.
Noah Miller
In all the years I lived in DC I never checked this place out, but the time finally came and I was not disappointed.
Before you do anything get your free times ticket for the exhibit on the sub floor. If your weight is 1 to two hour you have time to check out the rest of the building while you wait. The third floor exhibit on gender/challenging gender norms was very interesting and well done. The second floor was largely closed for a new installation, but it will be back. If that one is open as well I would probably give the museum a good two hours before going to the special exhibit.
On the other side of things it is just a cool building and I can't wait for renovations to be done since it has always caught my eye.
David Bear
Wonderful Yayoi Kusama special exhibit. Like other Smithsonian museums there's no admission fee.
Marlon Nelson
Saw the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. A bit disappointed that there wasn't more, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Naomie Kim
I loved this place, I'm glad I went, the people working there are so nice and kind, very spacious and lovely.
Bryce Garner
Stopped by on a recent visit. The Kusama exhibit was amazing.
RY
around here is good area to take shots. and some contemporary arts.
West Point
This has been, and still is, one of my favorite museums on the planet. Conveniently located on the Mall, it is easily accessible but often overlooked. The outside is not impressive and maybe even dull, but once inside you will be stimulated. What makes this museum different from most of the others in the "Smithsonian" group, is that it caters to not only modern art, but quite progressive art. It's more "New York" than Washington, and you may find "installations" with sound and lighting--not just paintings. The interior space is rather plain and cold, but this somehow offsets the works of art and/or installations and interactive sections all the more. You may not like everything you see here, but I guarantee you won't be bored.
Crystal Sperduto
We went to see the yayoi Kusama exhibit and it was amazing 🤩 …
Christopher Valdivia
Free art! 3 floors of it! It was an excellent experience with very eclectic exhibits.
MBC
One the best Contemporary Art Museums in the East Coast. Their Current line up featuring legends Laurie Anderson and Yayoi Kusama is mind blowing. Practically dedicated entire floors to their illustrious careers/phases which is such a visual treat. ITS FREE ALSO.
Elisa Ferrante
This is one of my favorite all time museums. Not only is the building's architecture amazing, the exhibits inside are too. Went for the Yayoi Kusama exhibit and had a really fabulous tour guide, who also pointed us to the 3rd floor exhibit, currently all female artists. This place is always worthwhile.
Vanessa Rodriguez
It was a nice museum. Wait time is only for interactive portion of the museum.
Devi
Modern art of an eclectic variety. I was unable to get tickets to the Kusama exhibit but that looked amazing online. Best to get it online a day prior! This museum is free and has lots of different exhibits
saicharan gullapalli
The place is good but the tickets are not online it’s first come first serve and all tickets will be sold out by 10am. So be there early if you want to see it
Chris Scarmack
I really enjoyed seeing the art inside of this building. I normally don't ever look at or appreciate art, but this museum made me change my mind. I also really liked the various exhibits this museum had, because it allowed for a wide variety of art to be shown. I like how this museum was no cost, but educational in nature.
Pavithra Kannan
The Laurie Anderson exhibit here is a must visit. It is my favorite exhibit off of all the museums I've been to.
Auggie Flentje
Not all that impressed with the museum at the moment. Too much hype for a two room Kusama exhibit. That needed to be combined with more smaller pieces that could be viewed during lengthy waits. Construction seems to be going on a long time. Look forward to that being finished.
Joanne Woo
Definitely my most favorite art museum ever.
Megan
So many interesting exhibits. There was an exhibit on manifestos and three floors of different types of artwork. The entire museum took about 3 hours to walk through. There are also video exhibits that bring the experience to another dimension—especially for people who like modern art, this is such a captivating place with different perspectives and understandings.
Jason Phillips
One of my favorite museums in the entire world! The museum is part of the Smithsonian which means free admission, and it's not huge so it can be walked in a few hours max. The smaller size makes it a perfect venue for rotating exhibits. The circular layout is reminiscent of the Guggenheim in NYC. And a subtle thing I noted on my recent visit was that the escalator spits your out in a counterclockwise route on one level and a clockwise direction on the other. Very clever! The sculpture garden trumps the museum's interior gallery--which is no small feat. Bravo on this excellent contemporary art museum in our nation's capital.
Robin Taylor
Late review but I came just in time for the mirrors exhibit. This is my first time visiting this museum and I was very impressed. I only had time to see that one exhibit but will definitely come back to check out the other ones that I saw in passing which also piqued my interest. We spent hours going through the several things on display and enjoy every minute of it as it was attractive and also interactive.
Christopher Yandell
Wonderful modern art and photography museum.
Sam Odle
Never seen anything quite like it. The entire museum (not counting the plaza and sculpture garden, which are also worth visiting) is comprised of six rotating exhibits split between three levels - two above the entry level and one below. It’s definitely not for everyone and there is adult content in some of the exhibits (it’s not for children) but I thoroughly enjoy my time here every time.
It’s a quick visit, especially if you don’t do the whole thing so I recommend coming here after or before seeing aerospace, American History, or natural history for a nice change of pace.
GPS
Got 2 glo up at the Yayoi Kusuma “Infinity Mirrors” exhibit a few years ago. Never seen lines like that for any museum 😵😭💯 but the staff handled it w ease and it was the greatest museum experience I’ve ever had. Gotta love those Barbara Kruger entrance murals 🐐🙏🏾🎨💫 Became a certified Hirshhorn member that day #squad 😎💯 …
Raj S
Visited last year, and it was good.. Kids liked it much.. Im not too much into Art, but my kids were happy.. very courteous service, and its free ! good for a quick 1-2 hour walk through the museum.. Visit if you have time ... and if you are interested in arts :)
Keith Pham
As a local, my absolute favorite museum. It's a the perfect size with modern, contemporary artists and often an interactive tech components that really makes you feel like you're a part of the exhibit. The exhibitions also change every few months, making revisiting well worth the trip. Like most other museums in DC, it's also free.
Bill Schauman
Best Mall museum for contemporary and modernist art. Somewhat undervisited but would you want it to be like Air and Space? No, you wouldn't. Good gifte shoppe. Coffee bar staffed by attractive young people. You should go.
Lauren Brown Turner
I loved the variety of mediums and inclusion of digital work. The museum shows modern artworks from their collection, but also brings in work, and expands with new acquisitions. They are working to engage children with Pepper the robot and storytime. I appreciated the level of engagement on the tour and how knowledgeable the gallery guides are. I enjoyed a tasty mocha at the small cafe and spent a while in the densely packed gift shop staffed by a very nice woman.
Tori
The Hirshhorn always has something interesting going on and is one of my favorite places to visit in DC. Do not assume you will see whatever exhibits you have seen in pictures as there is a constant rotation, so be sure to check out their website to know what exhibits are on display.
Sahara
Admission is free, but certain exhibitions require a reserved time slot. Well designed and curated collection of contemporary art.
Tyler Harris
Probably my least favorite of the Smithsonian art museums. Its is out in the margins of progressive art. The Laurie Anderson exhibit was quite good, I enjoyed the breadth of her work, especially the graffiti room. Overall a good experience but not my cup of deal.
Michelle Torres
My visit to the Hirshhorn Museum was unplanned, and more of an unexpected visit, but definitely one that I won't forget. The art displayed was beautiful, and modern with a backdrop in history. It wasn't overcrowded, nor too "busy" to enjoy. Definitely an experience worth having.
Nazli Abhari
My friend and I accidentally stumbled upon this place as we were on our way to the other more popular museums. This place is great!!! we are so glad that we found it. There is also a statue garden in front of the museum. be sure to check it all out. Highly recommend this place.
emily weber
We went specifically for the Yayoi Kusama exhibit, and it was fantastic. Quick on the weekday to get thru and such a cool experience.
Andrea Bielli
Great space offering well thought and selected modern art exhibitions in the heart of the Mall. The rounded shape of the building is providing a unique setting for organizing the placement of different pieces of art. In these days, the Laurie Anderson exhibition is a must as it provides a great overview of this eclectic artist.
Aditya Mahadik
The great Museum to visit. The work of some of the great places and people have been sum up under one roof. I liked the this museum since it very informative and scope of art is displayed in true sense. One of the best in Smithonian museums. The cool part is that the entry is free..
Bernardo Mar
The exhibit was nice and it displayed several great artist but If you are short on time visit the portrait museum instead. When I went it was under renovation and many exhibits were closed. Call beforehand to see what exhibitions are Available
James Wang
One of the most underrated museums on the mall but one of my favorites.
As a modern art museum, it offers quite a fun, multimedia experience that doesn't hinge on staring at paintings. Its design is also intriguing since it is a cylinder with a hollow interior which just adds to the fun.
As of June 2022, there is a Yayoi exhibit showcasing some of the incredible work she has created recently along the themes of infinity. Recommend going there at 9 AM to procure tickets (maybe even earlier now that tourists are coming back)
Ekaterina Zaiva
MUSEUM IS SUPER AWESOME! highly recommended for everyone who is in Washington for one day travel. Very very very satisfied
Eric Salas
If you love modern art, then the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is the place to go. Not as vast as the other museums on the National Mall, but you get a good dose of very creative film art. The building has a unique circular layout and beautifully simplistic.
Mad Mike0082
This really was an incredible place on the national mall. Possibly our favorite place so far. Nothing else like it around this area.
Mitch Vine
The standard collections are first rate. The special Eternity: Yayoi Kusama exhibit is way overrated. Nothing you couldn't see in the house of mirrors at your local county fair 50 years ago
anyah le
Loved the Yayoi, “One With Eternity” exhibit, get here early (like 8am), the tickets go fast!
Stephen Michael Fox Jr
A fabulous Smithsonian. This is the contemporary and modern art museum of the Smithsonian's collective on the National Mall. The building itself is impossible to miss as it stands in stark contrast to the majority of buildings on the Mall. Inside all the galleries are laid out in the circular patter of the building itself. The art inside varies and although not to my particular taste, I found it thought provoking and worthy of a visit. My only negative experience was with the over zealous and rude security staff. I was sitting in the coat check room on the floor using a wall outlet to charge my phone. A female security guard approached me and in a directive rude way told me unplug my phone, that I wasn't allowed to use the wall outlets. Obviously a petty person on a pathetic power trip of some sort. I complied with her instruction and unplugged my phone. I then went to the front desk and told them what had happened, the staff told me the security officer was wrong and called a supervisor guard over and informed him of the situation. I then went right back down stairs directly to the woman, informed her she was wrong and that I've informed the museum staff and her supervisor and then proceeded to plug my phone back in and continued charging it. Petty people with nominal authority always make for comical encounters.

Very nice museum! Definitely reccomend it if you like somwthing different other than historical painting and art!
Lori Petersen
What a magnificent place. We visited on Christmas Eve and it was spectacular!! A must see in DC!
Bren Miaira Kutch
Varied interesting collections inside and out. Not a huge museum but worth an hour or two! There is a nice coffee shop and reading area on the main floor and a small but well stocked gift shop on the lower level; unfortunately the courtyard Dolcezza gelato shop is closed in the winter 😢 …
Ronald Steele
Laurie Anderson's "The Weather Exhibit" is a mind- blowing artistic experience at the Hirshhorn Museum (although undergoing renovation).
Shreyasee Shinde
Hands down one of the best contemporary arts museums I've been to till now. The interiors and the pieces around the museum itself make you interested and curved walls lead you on. They showcase many unique exhibitions every month and some of them are utterly breathtaking and make you challenge your perspective. Would definitely recommend to all art enthusiasts!

The Hirshhorn (free entry) is a contemporary and modern art museum and member of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. The museum is located along in a round shaped building that has been likened to a spacecraft parked at The Mall. It is next to the Smithsonian Castle. Opening Hours are 10am to 5.30pm daily.
The museum includes several floors of exhibition space focusing on works from the last 50 years. During our last visit in May 2016, we particularly enjoyed the Linn Meyer 'Our View from Here' exhibition featuring a range of shapes formed solely by uninterrupted individual lines. This was beauty in simplicity and something we both really enjoyed seeing. Quite original, methodical and delightfully interesting images formed by Meyer.
We also enjoyed the Suspended Animation films shown on the lower level as well as the peculiar 'Belief + Doubt' exhibition by Barbara Kruger. Here the entire space is covered in intriguing phrases and sayings of various sizes, making use of black, white & red colour. It is an original art form that immerses viewers in language in all directions, which has the great effect of capturing your attention to provoking your thoughts.
There is a small gift shop on the lower level of the Hirshhorn but no restaurant or cafe here. There are some tables outside in the plaza area as well as sculptures scattered around the main building. For those who enjoy this art form, you should definitely allow time for the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, just across the Jefferson on the Mall.
In the end, we like the Hirshhorn Museum, finding this to be a nice complement to the NGA and other art museums and galleries around the city. The contemporary art exhibitions here, at least during our recent visit, were child and family friendly and overall, pretty good works.
Note: You can visit the Hirshhorn Museum website before deciding to include a stop here during trips to D.C. They have a updated list of current and future exhibitions so you can have a think about what is available to view during the period of your intended visit to the capital ahead of time.

So so so in love with the Hirschhorn!
Everything about this museum is great. There’s an adorable coffee shop in the lobby, the ladies working in the gift shop are incredibly sweet, and the ART. So great.
I went while they had the Baselitz exhibit and it was incredibly well curated. My visit also coincided with some really hot/humid/generally gross weather and I appreciated all the little nooks scattered around where I could sit and chill and also be surrounded by cool art.
Bonus points for some cool views on the top floor!
Vincent Lee
Enjoy both the infrastructure of the museum and the works of art within. The circular layout with more exhibition spaces branching out around it is unique.
I appreciate when Mark Bradford uses the curvature of the walls to showcase his eight huge canvases; a mixed media piece collectively named "Pickett's Charge". They are worth your time sitting in front of them to soak in the colors, texture, and emotion they seek to trigger.
There are some construction going on during my visit and so, the experience was a little "distracting". Nevertheless, I am glad to have visited it.
Parker Kelley
Great experience viewing the wonderful immersive art offered here. We were passing by and decided to stop by to see if any tickets were available. These are timed- limited tickets that are first come first serve. Worth checking out. We saw the one with eternity exhibit.
j Jetta
I went specifically to see the Laurie Anderson exhibit before it left. The exhibit, museum, and sculpted gardens did not disappoint. Anything at the Smithsonian is always good. Pick a museum. You will enjoy it.
Suzanne Hodgson
The museum is under renovation, but still open. This wasn't my cup if tea, but I can see how it can be very interesting for other's.
I don't normally have sensory difficulties but with the exhibitions on display just now, I couldn't wait to leave.
This may have been due to the amount of walking we had done in very hot weather. Visitors from Scotland.
Just outside the main entrance is a great little ice cream kiosk, definitely worth buying one before you leave.
Mika Niels Schröder
Really good exhibitions from different artists. One of my favourite museums in DC so far
Claudia C. Cornilescu
Not what it used to be. I will probably not visit this museum again for a few years. The exhibition was pricey and needed to buy tickets in advance.
Tyler Robinson
This art museum was really cool. It's free but there's also a paid exhibit side. The free exhibit was well worth it if you're in the area. Impressive building with tons of photo opportunities.
Sharnell Guidry
We enjoyed the exhibit! We went around 9:45am and was able to get the fumes tickets, returned at 12:45 for the exhibit. Our 6. Year old enjoyed the interactivity and we loved the instagram worthy photos
Hilda Kroll
Kusama is back and it's worth standing on line for a little while to get a timed ticket to see the exhibit. The rest of the museum is open to the public any time.
Joan D. Winston
Went to the "petite" Kusama exhibition preview. The museum is under construction so the outside is chaotic. Don't bring valuables you cannot put in pockets because you cannot take ANYTHING except a phone/camera into the Kusama infinity rooms. Staff have you put a purse no matter how small in an unsecured open cubby. Since there are timed tickets there is no time to go out to try to use a locker upstairs. They hopefully will organize this better as they gain experience.
The infinity rooms are nice but underwhelming compared to the hype. The pumpkin room is excellent. Overall, the online film "Kusama: Infinity" was excellent and more rewarding than my visit. It made joining to get early access to Kusama worth it. I wanted to do that to reduce covid risk since masks are a personal choice now.
Han Jang
One of my most favorite museums in DC/on earth. The smaller size makes the exhibits seem more accessible and less overwhelming. Every piece inside is MEANT to be there.
Hannah Vivian Shaw (vivshaw)
Neat little museum with some super! well! curated! special exhibitions. The current Baselitz exhibit in is not to be missed! It charts a perfect course from the unsettlingly dark early works thru the mad figurative fracture paintings thru the subtle, luminous recent works. I felt like the last few portraits would ascend thru the gallery ceiling and become the starry sky of a new galaxy.
Oh, and if you haven't been before, you missed Yayoi Kusama last year. So don't miss this one! It's literally free; there's no excuse.
Brooke
Really like the layout and walk through of this building. Three floors of art, a delicious coffee spot, and one of the best museum gift shops ever! Really unique items, books, art, jewellery to choose from.
Nicole Petrucci
Modern art installations in a unique building. If you want to go to the special exhibits get a timed entry ticket from the information desk as soon as you walk in.
Simon Alebachew
Washington DC is Full of Museums and sigts to see. The best part is most of them are free and are in a walking distance. As a Washingtonian I procrastinated on visiting the museum's thinking I have plenty of time to visit. In what was my first museum quest of 2018, The Hirshorn Museum proved me exactly how wrong I was to take the beauty my city offers. It's a collection of visually stunning collection of arts that will keep you captivated. It's definitely one of the best museum's I have been to.
You really want to understand some of the arts in display, and although some of them have discriptions that accompany the art, I highly suggest utilizing the volunteers (I'm assuming) who carry "Ask me about Art" booklets to contextualize some of the art for you to truly understand the arts.
Need I say more. Go enjoy the Museum. And Go do it now.
Donald Dudley
Great art museum for all ages. Admission is free, but went to the Kusama Exhibit ($) and loved it. Only limitation is the (non) availability of reasonably priced parking.
Auggy Augs
Amazing place! We drove down from Philly for the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirror Rooms. Everyone was so accommodating at the museum - even the security! We chatted with an amazing guard there named Quincy. Couldn't have been nicer!
We are members and plan to return in the fall!
Chas Kuhn
Currently under renovation. 2nd floor not viewable. Basement and 3rd floor are available and worth your time. Tours are given and helpful for detailed history and in depth analysis of art works.
zvi LikesTV
The building layout is a little bit interesting; it's all around a central escalator. The main floor has big windows and a comfortable seating area.
The exhibit I saw was Manifesto: Art x Agency, which provided a good combination of historical context and interesting art. I saw a Magritte I hadn't seen before, and the Four Freedoms photos from just last year.
It was great and I intend to go back.
mary beth oreilly
Funky museum with varied exhibits. Small size allows you to see most everything they have to offer. Definitely see the sculpture gardern.
Carlos González
Been a while since I have walked through the Garden. Notice they removed several sculptures and replaced them with plants. There was no sign of replacements coming. Other than that amazing statutes
Harshika Jain
Majority part of the museum seems to be under construction but really enjoyed the outdoor sculpture garden. The basement floor has a temporary exhibition going on by Yayoi Kusama which requires an entry ticket, and the last entry is at 4:30pm - something to plan in advance
Donalyn Holloway
Nice museum if you love art. I wish there was more to see. Make sure you get the tickets to the exhibits. Don't cheat yourself.
Jeff Hunter
While art isn't really my thing, the different displays were diverse, but really interesting, lots of viewpoints sharing different perspectives that were anywhere from annoying to engaging! Just look out for the construction...
It's all over the place
J G
Amazing museum!!! I didn't know you needed tickets to see a portion of the museum. I suggest everyone to get the tickets in advance to have the full experience of the portion of the museum
Wendy W
I went just to see the Mark Bradford exhibit- Pickett’s Charge. I am no Civil War history buff or scholar, but I was highly motivated to see this exhibit by an African American contemporary artist. It takes up the entire third floor outer circular perimeter and deserves more than just an half hour to fully appreciate. Like most exhibits at this modern museum, it’s not just abstract or pop art, but meaningful art that tells a story and will have a lasting place in art history.
J David Eisenberg
New exhibits, including Chinese photography, and an installation by Laurie Anderson. Everything is simply the best. A must-see if you are in DC and like modern art.
Emily
Check out the Kusama Show, Lori Anderson or whatever’s on!
A.J. Nowaczyk
A very well done modern art museum. I was truly in awe. The video flag, and manifesto were some really unique highlights. Loved the Warhol and Pollack works that were there as well.
Amir Aghareb (Amir Aghareb)
It took 2 hours to see all the pieces and it was really good curated. The gift shop is small and overal it is a relatively small museum that you can spend your afternoon in it.
Jennifer Prior
Infinity room experience & Laurie Anderson room were highlights this particular day. Chinese modern photography was... gripping. Go see.
Steve Lipp
The Hirshhorn Museum hosts wonderful exhibits like currently pieces of Yayoi Kusama. Get in line before they open - see their website - if tickets needed for a special exhibit like this one, they will provide timed slots that you can get at 9.30am (be there earlier!) until they run out of these same-day (free) tickets.
And if you can't get a ticket for that, the rest of the museum and the sculpture garden are definitely worth coming here anyhow!
They have a coffee shop in the lobby with some baked snacks and I believe in the courtyard there is another snack-offering around lunch/afternoons.
Very inspiring art installations on each of their levels. Do not miss you chance to visit when in DC!
E Nad
Really cool art exhibits. Don't forget to get your timed pass for the hall of mirrors. Unless you are a member, you can't reserve passes ahead of time.
SD DC
Awesome place. The exhibits are always outstanding. Not too many children here like the other smithsonians. Smaller overall size is really nice because it's not overwhelming. My favorite!
Tim Samples
How much you love it might depend on the exhibits and what you like, but the space is really cool and I like the circular layout. Also, the coffee counter in the bottom is awesome. And the sculpture garden is great on a nice day.
Yolanda Fraction
One of my most favorite museums of all time! Never disappoints! Perfect for modern all fans from around the world.
Millicent Bean
There are some permanent exhibits that still are fun to see each time I visit. The art in this museum can be very strange.
Brenan Stetzer
This museum isn’t large which is why I liked it. The spaces felt intentional and I wasn’t overwhelmed with options. The Laurie Anderson exhibit was one of the best museum experiences I’ve had in a while!
Lily
Amazing FREE contemporary art museum. Well lighted, clean, and as an art nerd there was a lot to see there that both I hadn't seen and wanted to see. Great collection, beautiful building.
Teddypant Bongaram
Hugest museum, too many arts! My wife got sucked into one of the paintings, still negotiating for finding her but very expensive to hire a dimensional shambler
Brad Barker
Modern art museum with unique and creative art pieces. For a quick visit, allow an hour and a half. If you are into art and art appreciation, this is a half day to full day stop.
Davon Brown
I had a awesome time in the museum. It was my first time. I love how to exhibitions are in a circle like the building. Very interesting!!!
Risa Nakagawa
Kusama exhibit is very short but fun! Showed up around 830 to get 10am tickets
Sneha H S
Multi-sensory museum with some incredible art on multiple floors.
Kimberly air
The artwork was beautiful and the featured exhibit was on time for our appointment. I highly recommend this place for weekends.
Peter Vanhove
Whenever in Washington DC and lover of contemporary art, go and see the amazing exhibition "What Absence Is Made Of". Not the classic retrospective but thematic on how artists have represented ideas instead of objects. From the folder "What Absence Is Made Of also explores the personal and cultural anxieties surrounding advancements in computer animation, avatars, and artificial intelligence, as well as technology that makes the body obsolete." I went back twice. Existing peices from the collection with brandnew work acquired specifically for this exhibition.
And a great App that explains based on a picture of the work, not a number on the wall. Well done Hirshhorn museum! Blown away...
Vaibhav Jain
Multimedia room and other art are very nice
Russell Nagle
Pretty much a must see. We started at the top and worked out way down (ending in the sculpture garden). There is a lot to like but I particularly liked Laurie Anderson's exhibit.
BMORE PRO PRODUCTIONS
Nice place to see some different different types of artwork. Roughly 4 flies of different exhibits displaying various genres of modern to contemporary artwork.
Joyce López
Went on a whim, it was great. I do recommend reserving tickets to their exclusive exhibit in advance because they go very quickly.
Michael Stump
Go see the Yayoi Kusama exhibit ASAP.
MT G
We arrived around 10 am on a Sunday and got 3 tickets for 12:15 pm admission to the Kusama exhibit, which was well worth all the waiting as we moved through the two Infinity Rooms and the giant pumpkin room. We loved it, got wonderful photos. We also visited and loved the Lori Anderson exhibit (again).
Carrie Hunt
My first visit, very nice and excited to watch new exhibits come through.
Casey H
Great collection of modern art. We went specifically to see the Yayoi Kusama but also looked through a few other exhibits while waiting for our time slot.
Heather Smith
I love this artist! Saw first of her works in Japan and totally fascinated by her. Love she is open and honest about the struggles she has had with mental health as well. She is unique, brings such amazing artistic works to the public, and non apologetic for who she is. Fantastic! Very organized to get tickets (free) for special show. Showed up about 30 min before they were handed out and maybe #50 in line. Got in quickly. And then each mirror room was minimized to your group, but timed. Perfect!
MkMG09
- awesome museum
- lots of stuff to take pictures of
- it's free
Plan on spending 1 & 1/2 hours here to see everything
- I'd recommend this museum
Benjamin
Cool space and excellent exhibits. Even during its exterior renovation the space and exhibits are great for a quick review or an extensive visit. A must see when touring the Smithsonian museums. Can’t wait until the renovated exterior is unveiled!!
Earl Mil
Was just there for the Yayoi Kusama and the Laurie Anderson exhibits. Both were most excellent. The Yayoi exhibit scheduling was well done.
T King
Amazingly great exhibits! Duchamp and Laurie Anderson now. A must see (and free).
Holli Bertrand
Website said no ticket needed, walked 15 min and not able to get into main exhibit for 3 hours as you need a timed ticket only available from lobby desk.
Valeria Lombo
Such an interesting Museum for contemporary art! Is refreshing to find a collection like this within the Museums and exhibitions at DC
Vlad Gorshkov
Awesome modern and contemporary art museum in DC. Always changing exhibits and always appropriately timely with those changes. The gift shop in the bottom floor is AWESOME, for any art and design type of person it’s like a little heaven.
Niko Welsh
Really nice experience and it’s free
Melissa Stegner
My favorite museum in DC. Plenty of interesting rotating exhibits.
Kevin
Not large but a great collection of challenging contemporary pieces. When we went there was a large exhibit on Baselitz. There's some fantastic sculptures outside- don't miss them! Also a dolcezza gelato place with great flavors in the courtyard. Good to pair with the East Building of the National Gallery of Art.
Heather B
The exhibits were very interesting and fascinating. The view from one room was really cool, which is the photos I shared. The art is much more interesting!
Christina Marion
I went specifically to see a very busy, very crowded exhibit and was super impressed with how well the staff handled the masses. They made an effort to keep everything organized and keep people moving through, which impressively allowed everyone to enjoy it.
The sculpture garden outside is also incredible.
Brandi Bernow
My family and I went to Hirshhorn to see Yayoi Kusama’s work. It was short but sweet. If you’re not a member of this museum, the only way is to get free tickets is early morning in person so you can pick the time. It’s first come, first serve.
For the first Infinity room, they allow two people at a time and around 45 seconds to look. I felt like I was in heaven.
However, we had to wait around half hour just for cleaning up (after someone puked) in the second Infinity Room and they allow up to four adults in second Infinity Room. It was enjoyable to see.
Matt
Very modern, unique art. We went to the top and walked down. Can't beat free admission, this is a good spot if you're really into art.
Alan C.
Under construction, the only exhibit open was on the third level in addition to the sculpture garden. I’d say skip for now, unless you are a Duchamp fan.
Virginia Stockwell
It's one of those modern art museums where you think "hmmm interesting" but may not longer long. The side rooms are where it gets really interesting. So much art immersion with a different vibe in each room. Does get pretty crowded on weekends and rainy days.
Sulie Rodriguez
First time visiting. It was a good experience. This was my favorite part of the museum.
Jaye Aster Broder
It’s free, crowded, round, and with a wide variety of art from installations to prints. Displays many socio/cultural commentary type pieces. The cafe line is long but it’s supposed to have nice coffee and gelato. The gardens around at pretty. There are several places to sit. We spent an hour here.
Tommaso Giampapa
Spectacular collection of modern and contemporary art. Highly recommend for art afficionados.
Tim Russon
I feel like if you enjoy contemporary art and "get" it, this would be a cool museum. Being a professional creative myself (video producer), I really didn't understand most of it, and didn't always feel comfortable having my two year old around some of the art. Bizarre experience overall. But, like the rest of the museums on the mall, it's free.
Verónica Carrera del Río
Small museum. Not such a fan of modern art, but it was a good expirience all in all. The museum is free but there is a expositon that is paid and at specifics time. We missed it
Michelle D
Due to renovations, only the third floor was open, sculpture garden closed. But still some great stuff to see, particularly if you walk through the beautiful garden next to the museum.
Ms. Davis
It was nice experience for our kids. Three levels of art. The sculptures outside were interesting as well.
Cathy Herndon
Saw the Kusama exhibit! Short but wonderful!! Did the whole museum.
Devon Boorman
Super interesting exhibits. As with any modern art museum some displays felt over wrought or had a lot of pretense without substance but some pieces were inspiring and thought provoking. Definitely worth a visit. The building itself is quite neat with its hollow cylindrical shape.
Walt Nicholson
The museum is between major exhibits and under construction at the moment, but what’s on display will please the modern art lover in your group.
Ehsan Dadvar
I love this museum. Amazing collections in an interesting building. People who work here are very kind and helpful especially the Italian-American lady at information desk.
Dondré
A great museum! Check their site they always have pretty cool exhibits here. The shape of this museum makes it very interesting and in the summer they have a balcony that has great views overlooking the national mall. If you like art then I'd say check it out. It is free like most museums in the district.
Alexis Thomason
Me and my momma stumbled upon it right before closing, so I did not get to stay long. We visited the top two levels, but unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the bottom level, which I believe would have been the greatest one. The bottom level held a limited time exhibit!
Karen Lopez
Beautiful museum on the inside and out! Perfect for dates. The exhibits are always very interesting and the store has the coolest finds. So much to see here!
Carla Fernandez
Very interesting exhibitions. I loved Manifesto: Art x Agency. A must se in DC for anyone that enjoys modern art.
Mark Windsor
A great art gallery if you are into modern art. Most of it was too modern and messy for me, but some pieces were fascinating and worth enjoying for several minutes.
Ying Liang
The Hirshhorn is an interesting building with interesting art exhibits. Definitely worth checking out! A lot of outside-the-box creativity and interactive displays. Probably should’ve read online beforehand but the special exhibit requires tickets that are sold every morning, and were sold out by the time we got there Sunday afternoon. So definitely be prepared if you want to get the most out of your experience!
Maria
Lovely art. The museum is clean and the employees were very helpful and even willing to discuss their thoughts on the art which was nice.
Skylar Joseph
The museum is quite large, and it took me a few hours just to see one of the exhibits. The exhibit that I saw was on the anti-corporate push back by artists during the '80s. I found the exhibit both interesting and informative on a topic that is still pertinent today. While I haven't had a chance to explore the rest of the museum yet, I highly recommend this exhibit and the museum as a whole.
Gabe Ghanadan
Excellent for modern art and multimedia art. It is currently under construction but that is temporary. It is not the prettiest building… but it is interesting. I am not a huge fan of modern art but I still really like this museum. Their exhibits often get you thinking. Some exhibits require free tickets but most often they are open to the public.
Mark Smith
Eclectic displays always!
Always something interesting.
Currently "One with Eternity:Yayoi Kusama" well worth the time to catch. Interesting
Timothy Thompson
Fabulous contemporary art museum. The Kusama exhibit was fantastic but shorter than I would have liked. The Laurie Anderson exhibit what enormous and enthralling. What an incredibly productive artist.
LP
Me and my friend spent four hours here and could have easily came back again for the same exhibits. The art here is emotionally loud and demands you intellectually engage with it. Often I felt uncomfortable, many times I was overwhelmed. It is beautiful and different than any other museum I’ve been to. I highly recommend it. There is a sculpture garden out front as well as indoor exhibit. Traffic throughout the museum seems regular but moderate even on weekends. There are free lockers on the bottom floor by the gift shop for coats or other things. I will definitely be back.
**there isn’t signage for art exhibits that could trigger those with different light sensitivities
Cory H
One of my favorite museums! Really interesting and constantly rotating collecting of exhibits.
Israel Siria
Loved the expositions in this museum. The remodeling happening outside ruins the experience a little bit.
Sushma Ambekar
Was a very unique experience. Spent about 3hrs here! I got here before it opened. Luckily there was a lobby they opens early

INFINITY MIRRORS at the Hirshhorn Museum
Time: Woke up at 6:30am got to DC by 7am (no traffic)
Parking: I parked on Jefferson Drive in front of the air and space museum for free (the sign said it was three hours but no meters and I was there for about 5 hours no ticket) It's half a block over from the hirshhorn.
Line: website said line starts at 9:30 doors open at 10. I got in line at 8:40 and was around the 40th person there so people had already been lining up. The first person there said they got there at 8am (I was at Starbucks across the street waiting until about 9 to head over had I known we could come earlier I would've just came straight there). There was a trailer about 100 could fit in if you stand tightly together in line. They let 10-15 people in at a time to get tickets, you tell them what time you want. I was the 5th group of people to go in and got my tickets a little after 10:30
Tickets: each person can get up 4 tickets. There are 400 same day tickets avail first come first serve (not including online tickets). These are timed tickets with 15 minute increments starting at 10 til 4 museum closes at 5 no tickets during the 12:00 hour. All tickets are free/the museum is free. Tickets were sold out in less than an hour
Rules: no flash photography. No bags or backpacks, small purses are ok. No food or drink. Complimentary lockers are avail (highly suggest putting your coats there)
Exhibit: the whole 2nd floor is dedicated to the exhibit. There are 5 rooms you walk in and 2 rooms you can only look in. The wait to enter each room is anywhere from a 5-20 min.
Groups of 2-4 are allowed in at a time in each room for 20-30 seconds (yes I know that sounds like not enough time, it does go by fast but you can go back in by standing in the back of the line). I had enough time to do a panoramic of each room and a few pics/selfies. We finished in under two hours.
Advice: do not come in large groups bc you can only go in 2-4 at a time in a room. If you are driving get there early to find parking. If you are standing in line for same day tickets come no later than 8:30am and bring a book, music, snack, something to keep you occupied. This might not be the best exhibit for kids (they're going to want to touch everything) or people in wheelchairs (small space). Use he bathroom before the exhibit because it's hard to get back in. Try to get tickets for the 11:00 hour because there are no tickets avail during the 12:00 hour so the lines die down there's less people so less waiting. Even though it's a straight line through the exhibit you can bounce around and revisit each room. Go to the 4th room first and work your way back to the first. the 5th room is the point of no return/exit.
You can stay for as long as you want and check the rest of the museum out, there's a gift shop and cafe too.
Online tickets are avail every Monday for the following week but they are impossible to get.
The exhibit is open until 5/14/17. The museum is open everyday 10-5 with the last timed tickets at 3:45/4
blueline_raptor JD
Don't take children in here. Nice art exhibits but definitely not a place for kids under 8th grade.
H TTizzo
Review pics made it look a lot cooler than it was. Kids were bored and could not wait to leave
G Oulee
Yayoi Kusama exhibit (free), surprised there were still tickets available at the door!
Kevin Doherty
Yayoi Kusama and Laurie Anderson exhibits were mesmerizing! Art is meant to be experienced. And this was a really great experience.
Brian Hicks
This is probably our favorite Smithsonian museum to revisit. The exhibits change regularly and are always really cool. For the special events you def need to get your free ticket ahead of time. Especially on the weekend.
James Walker
Currently undergoing some exterior renovations, but is open to the public under Covid protocols.
The garden and grounds have numerous art exhibits and displays visible from the street. They appear to have rotating collections from high profile artists/curators.
Ahmet Oğuz Atlı
GO EARLY to get tickets to the Yayoi Kusama exhibit, tickets are free but limited. They only sell in-person and run out before 11am.
Even if you can’t get the ticket to the Kusama exhibit, the other exhibits are still well worth your time. A must-visit in DC for lovers of contemporary art.
David
Free entry. I was surprised to like the museum with how I usually don't enjoy art. Sadly no sculpture exhibit as of writing this in Dec 2021.
Tondochan LaSylvet
The Kusama exhibition is worth arriving early for the timed entry tickets.
Holly Ketchel
For the Kusama exhibit, we spent a lot of time waiting, all of it standing, for less than five minutes of the exhibit. First is the wait for tickets - 45 minutes waiting outside. We got there at 9:15 and by the time we got to the front of the line the earliest available entrance time was 12:45. Then once in the exhibit we waited almost an hour for the first mirror room and 15 minutes for the second. By the time you get to see the rooms you are exhausted from waiting and must hurry through to allow others access. Perhaps they will improve the process with time but we were disappointed. Do not reccomend at all for children, seniors or anyone with physical challenges. It is an interesting experience however and we did appreciate the artistic qualities.
Khanh Do
Modern art museum at National Mall, Washington DC. Across D street is the Hirshhorn outdoor statue garden, a very beautiful environment with exquisite displays.
Alex Krentsel
Fun visit! Some exhibits are currently closed, so I didn’t need that much time to see everything carefully (think ~1-~1.5 hours)
Karl Hebert
Cool pieces and exhibits. Nice stop to cool off, get some water, and take in a little culture. Can't wait for the exhibit on the 2nd floor to open.
Pammy M
Love art! Some very modern minimalist pieces were not my cup of tea, but overall enjoyed our visit. Wish we had more time.
Rich McIntyre
This is a wonderful Art Gallery! I would hope that many Americans would take advantage of this free opportunity to review Art from some of the greatest Artists the world has ever produced.
Don Saxton
Los Angeles for contemporary art, but Hirshhorn has 20th century sculpture gardens
Bruce Ashley
Wonderful! Got to see two wonderful exhibits: Laurie Anderson's mind-blowing installation and Yayoi Kusama's psychedelic, mirrored rooms. For Kusama's you need a timed entry pass. After immersing ourselves in these exhibits we relaxed in the garden outside. Don't miss this experience!
Somboriot Kipchilat
Amazing place to visit for very unique and modern art. Be sure to try the iced latte at the coffee shop
Karin E
Besides other art exhibits in Hishhorn there was Kusama's amazing art exhibition. Entrance is free. For Kusama, be there as soon as possible to get the early tickets.
John Wilkes
Visiting the Hirshorn is always a treat! We saw the Yayoi Kusama exhibit and it was fascinating. Would highly recommend.
Jordan Goy
Was so glad we did this! Pulse exhibit was cool. It left me wanting more!
Anne Yensz
Not only did I absolutely LOVE this museum I am blown away by the service I received after I left.
I fell in love with a painting on exhibit and like a fool didn't take a photo of it. I couldn't get it out of my head and emailed the Hirshhorn on a whim hoping they would know what I was talking about. (The email literally said "the painting was black on top and gray on the bottom and was in the corner of the room it was displayed in.")
Imagine my surprise when a day later I had a response! Rebecca had found the painting and sent me a photo of it to make sure it was the one I was talking about.
It was truly more than I had ever expected. I would 100% recommend visiting this museum.
Carolyn Gillespie
I love going here once a year to see what theyve changed. Never a dull experience.
Kayode Yussuf
Enjoy modern art. I had two favourites in this museum. The first is the work i posted here. It was designed by placing lights behind or on black plastic. It was so beautiful. The second was a room where Al-Ghamdi was featured. The room was designed to make you feel dizzy while listening to the gentleman tell his story. Despite being a light reflection, it felt surreal
Richard Myers
Unique museum with delightful exhibits. You will experience art differently.
Maddie West
Went for the Kusama exhibit and had a great time! The staff was also really friendly and educated us on other exhibits which of course resulted in a visit!
Vagner de Carvalho Silva
If you like modern art you may like it. If not don't go to this museum. Coffee shop is very simple, so don't count with it for a meal, but just for a regular coffee.
Brittany John
Didnt cost anything to enter the museum.
Different and amazing exhibits that takes about an hour or two to get through. I went on a whim and was pleasantly shocked at how interesting the exhibits were.
I'd recommend checking in to exhibits that require tickets, e.g. -1 level, first. While the tickets are free they are timed entry and might not have any availability for a couple hours but atleast yoy can kill time checking out the rest of the museum first.
Honestly, one of the coolest places to go if you visit the National Mall area.
mindy logar
Love coming to see the new exhibits. This is a must stop spot in DC.
Morr K
Amazing !! I love how you get to learn a little more about an exhibit by listening to the artists
Naomi Leonard
Currently doing renovations, but cool exhibits
Brenna Killeen
A small but delightful museum. We bring our toddler at let him run around.
Kostadin Kushlev
Expand the mind through the ever changing exhibitions of modern art at this amazing museum. And yes, demand that your school trip makes a stop at this museum when visiting DC.
Tom F
I wasn't prepared for the power of the Laurie Anderson exhibit The Weather. Almost overwhelming but a huge pleasure to try to absorb 😀 Don't miss this if you can help it! And of course you have a magnificent DuChamp exhibit 1 floor up, but you should seriously consider a large break in between. Whew! …
John
Fantastic free art gallery

It’s hard to determine whether my five-star review reflects a typical Hirshhorn experience, or the installation that I saw. But nonetheless, the Laurie Anderson exhibit was one of the most inspiring, creative, and mind-blowing experiences I have ever had. I got lost in visual arts, music, poetry, stories, and am already thinking about going again. This installation was cutting-edge and pushing the boundaries of “art” into the twenty-first century. Since Anderson’s work was hosted by the Hirshhorn, it makes me think the museum really is embracing what art can be today.
Patty Adams
Pleasantly surprised!! Gorgeous, thought provoking exhibits. Don't let the construction on the exterior stop you. It's fully open inside. Try to go in "order" as the descriptions of the exhibits are helpful to understanding what you are witnessing.
O Morris
All and all the musuem is great and the rooms downstairs are fun but I'm one who craves modern art and not things that are so abstract it feels like we're giving anyone with some creativity a space. So if you like things that are abstract then this is the place for you but if you like modern art like myself then this isn't something for you.
Tonie Bedell
We did not visit the inside of this museum, but the gardens are spectacular!! Loved walking amount this garden.
Hungtang Ko
Not the best Yayoyi Kusama exhibition that I've seen but still amazing
Melanie Miller
I've been to all of the museums in DC many times but for some reason I never went into this one until the other day.... and I loved it. It was so different I just couldnt get enough. Definitely will be visiting this one again.
Justin Bivens
Amazing sculptures and gardens
Andrea De Arment
Love this museum. Kusama exhibit was awesome. A fave place to visit every time I am in DC.
Lukas Gaedtke
Saw the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. It was much shorter than I thought it was going to be, which is fine. The worst part was that there was one guest who was very loud and VERY rude while other patrons were trying to read about Kusama's history by LOUDLY over simplifying her history and exclaiming how uninterested he was in reading everything about her. Incredibly disrespectful. Incredibly embarrassing. When asked to be quiet, this person opted to verbally attack other patrons instead of keeping their mouth shut. Essentially ruined the experience.
Ben Kickass
Definitely a cool place to see! Still under construction when we went (Sep 20) but for What was open it was really fun. Will update next time we go!
Yolanda Santa Cruz
If you are looking for a great selection of contemporary art, this is the place to go!
C Poet
This is an amazing free modern art museum in the heart of DC. They have a rotation of installation peices, and art from a wonderful selection of artists. The have a great gift shop that has a gift for everyone. Overall if you're in DC and want to see an art gallery or simply do something indoors definitely check out the Hirshhorn.
Spencer Chen
Quite enjoyed Yayoi's exhibit, wish there was more of her work on display. The rest of the museum was also great and inspiring. To get the pass to Yayoi's exhibit, we arrived at 8:30am and found ourself about 50+ in the queue; I estimated that the line is about 300+ by 9:30am when they started handing out the passes. There seems to be plenty of passes to go around (at least 20 for each 15 min slot). You'll find the end of the in the garden on your left if you are entering from Independence Ave -- don't waste your time following the security's direction to the front of the line.
Brandon Seaton
One of the my top favorite for art museum! I am appreciate of many art things that has been fascinating to me! I can’t explain in many words. Only word I can describe is unique. All the things are truly unique of what artist have made it so many fascinating works and exhibits to all visitors at Hirshhorn Museum! I strongly recommend you to visit if you are new to art museum or interested in arts or whatever it is.
Jackie G
This place is crazy amazing! It's really the only modern art museum I go to regularly. And this time Marcel Duchamp exhibit made me so happy....
Michael Valdivielso
Rarely go to the Hirshhorn as I find 9 out 10 of its pieces either uninteresting or, to be honest, confusing. Sometimes I find something I like, or is beautiful, or catches my eye, or makes me think. But rarely. I just prefer the other art museums.
Sanket Phalgaonkar
Didn’t find it exciting enough, specially compared to the other art museums like SAAM around it. But the coffee place in it is good!
Craig Alexander
Always our go-to museum when in DC.
Paul Galloway
Always good traveling exhibits, never busy and easy to walk around. One of the best museums in DC.
Polly Thomas
Loved the exhibits and the location is perfect.
mallory williamson
the "popular" exhibits are pricey, but the rest of the place is just as great! Went with a friend who was in town and neither of us were disappointed! This floor had me feeling like an olsen twin in New York Minute!
Sean Jackson
Very nice museum filled with unique and interesting exhibits. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.
Laura Gray
Cool exhibits, friendly& helpful staff, neat design of building 💕
Kyle Getson
Not usually interested in this type of art but was surprised by it. Had good interactive stuff for kids. The pulse exhibits were really cool for kids and adults.
Uyen Hill
The general exhibitions were good and the Infinity Mirrors were pretty cool. However, we waited in line for 3.5 hours in the cold and the porta potties were being cleaned out, so the smell was unbearable. We got our tickets for the Infinity Mirrors to find out that there was more waiting for each mini exhibition inside. We have 11:30 tickets, got to the line at 11:20, employee didn't let us in. Came back at 11:27, she made us wait another 3 minutes. It was 11:30, yet they were still letting people with 11:00 and 11:15 tickets to get in, which caused the lines inside, yes lines with an s, to be packed. The employee was intentionally rude and mean to us.
Robert Drake
America's contemporary art museum is fantastic. The rotating exhibits and the lay out are fascinating. The staff and leadership are well trained and keep the work exciting, challenging, and accessible.
josh berg
Great place lots of fun but ask yourself how does art make you feel
Zara Altair
Highlights influential artists with an abundance of text. The sculpture garden also has a beautiful tree.
Niki Janssen
Saw an amazing exhibition here of Laurie Anderson. We were also surprised to find two of Kussama's mirror rooms here. I also like the size of the museum, its not too large.
Marcos Motta
We saw the Yayoi Kusama exhibition and we need to book a day before.
Zida Wang
My fav museum in DC
Colin Chaloux
First time here and they had some really cool exhibits. Wish the staff would have mentioned that one of the exhibits was not kid friendly before we entered with my 4yr old niece.
Fort Far
Love love love!!!! The staff is top notch, exhibits are amazing and the Gelato is yummy! This is a great museum.
Lizzie Marie
Awesome time today beautiful exhibits
Robert Newton
Beautiful architecture. The art is spread out in different corners and on multiple floors. Even though we had a floor plan we felt like we must have missed something.
Billy Riddle
Not into modern art BUT the Pulse exhibit was a tremendous experience
Abhijit Khanna
Generally like yhe exhibits, didn't like current exhibit of Chinese artists
Thelma
This is one of my all-time favorite contemporary art museums! I especially love the sculpture garden – wish it was larger. ;) Give your eyes a rest and stroll along the mall before you explore another museum!
Kanamori Yoichi
Great museum of contemporary art. Arts exhibited here directly or subliminally stimulate our five senses. (Or 6th.) In addition, the shop and cafe were great, too
LaQuitta Rummler
Awsome Laurie Anderson experience. They strive to always have something new. Relaxing atmosphere, no rush like other museums, go there every time I am in DC. Have never been disappointed.
Stuart Simon
Free. Highlight is the outdoor sculpture garden. However, the indoor core collection is the best in DC for modern sculpture. In the last few years they've had excellent, cutting edge special exhibits, including this winter season. Masks required but available at the entrance
Kasia Butkowska
I usually dont enjoy modern art museums but this one was AMAZING. I will definitely go back
Yolanda Anderson
Really enjoyed walking through the Laurie Anderson Exhibit in this museum. The holograms is this place we're very interested . Only did one floor today. Will definitely go back
Emily Andre
Really interesting modern and contemporary art exhibits!
Kittikun C.
Small museum in D.C., but worth a short stop for modern and contemporary arts.
Amber Hajek
Some exhibits were closed and not much to show. Need to come back again for the cool exhibition yono and the new one upstairs opens August 3rd
Zhuohong Xie
We arrived here on a Thursday morning (4/14/2022)at 9:50 am for the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. Waited 25 min to get a timed entry ticket @ 12:45 pm. The Kusama exhibit is relatively small. You do still need to wait in line for the Infinity Mirror and Lantern rooms. For the Infinity Mirror room you can stay 30 seconds, and for the lantern room you can stay for 1 minute. While you do need a ticket to the Kusama exhibit, You can go into the museum for the other exhibits without waiting. And I love the Laurie Anderson exhibit!
Jeffery Hyde
It should be noted that there are substantial renovations in progress at the Hirshhorn. (4/5/22) Entire building (facade), inner courtyard, some galleries all being worked on. This is a full on construction zone. Very interesting installation by Laurie Anderson, lovely sculpture garden adjacent
Shroom Butter
Yoooooo this Museum is a circle. If you go through it fast enough you may get dizzy! But! Even though the construction on the outside is extremely off-putting, the interior houses some of the best art exhibits on The Mall. Definitely worth a visit!
Fern Crossway
Part of the Smithsonian Institute's collection of free museums in DC, the Hirshorn Museum is a relatively small art museum featuring impressive architecture, modern art, and a sculpture garden located just across the street. Enjoy a variety of artwork including sculpture, photography, performance, and digital media.
ciara d
This is always one of my favorite museums to go to. A little disappointed recently with the handling of tickets for the Kusama exhibit, but nonetheless a great museum to see if you like modern art.
Craig Smith
As a contemporary and modern art fan then of course I am going to enjoy the Hirshhorn Museum as part of the Smithsonian collection. Located on the National Mall it is one of the more distinct of the buildings.
David Muñoz
Great phallocentric exhibit. A must see if you are into erections.
Ron Onedertwin
Great artwork. Wonderful atmosphere. The sculpture garden is as cool as the museum. Awesome place to just wander around..
N S
Love the art at this museum. And the architecture is sublime.
JY L
I found my new favorite art museum. It was great to see some of the works on view were specifically made/installed for this museum and its architecture.
Sebastian Rios
Always full of artistic surprises to enjoy!
J SUN
I’m loving it! One of the best contemporary art museum I’ve visited.
Internet Person
I don't understand modern art. Interesting kinda but not my cup of tea. I also didn't make it through the whole thing so take this review with a grain of salt.
Sinan Pismisoglu
Great exhibitions, great personnel, great free museum to visit and appreciate art!
Tiffani Collins
Just an amazing place to visit and see what other people's minds can create!!!
Matthew Stinson
The Laurie Anderson exhibit was AWESOME, can't wait to come back in August for their new exhibit
Focus
This was my favorite exhibit. Not sure anyone else knew it was art, but MUST be art compared to what's going on inside 😂😂😂
Mark Nierwetberg
Nice architecture and some interesting items especially in its surrounding yard with sculptures. There are changing exhibitions. Worth a look...
G C
I don't know much about modern art but I do appreciate the clean space and sculptures.
Gotham C
A great place for eclectic art in the middle of DC. Within the national mall area, it’s easy to navigate and free to enter.
Minh
Can’t wait for the Infinity Mirror rooms! The other exhibits were excellent too. Love the lockers in the lower level to store our jackets.
Tiffany Manchester
I love this museum as it is so abstract and different from most others. We spent hours inside exploring everything that there was to see.
Gigi H
First time here. Found an awesome way to pass a Sunday afternoon. Cool exhibitions.
Bling out with Pearl
Great experience and interesting art for conversation. Some paintingw are graphic.
Bill Tiemann
If modern art is your thing then you really need to pay a visit to the Hirshhorn Museum when visiting DC. The space is wonderfully laid out and easy to navigate.
M.E. Francis
One of my favorites in the DC Smithsonian set of museums. Always interesting exhibits. During COVID it can get quite crowded so beware if you're wary of crowds. Lots of tourists. Go on a weekday if you can!
Cody Webb
Excellent exhibits the yayoi kusama exhibit was absolutely immersive
Sergey Osokin
It's great even with the current outdoor and indoor reconstruction! And it will be better!
Jenn Francis
So glad we went here. It was amazing! Such an experience
Mary
This place was very interesting! Art is in the eye of the beholder.
David Sarokin
A DC treasure of avante garde art, sculpture and a cool gift shop.
Dylan Glockler
If you like contemporary within contemporary, this is it. Right on the mall - and save time to walk the sculpture garden.
Gori Larki
Worth visiting. Tickets to Kusama better to book in advance, do not leave withoutchecking her mirror rooms.
Tim Peterson
Exhibits were great, but the only escalator out was broken...no plan on how to safely remove people from the museum. Long lines for the freight elevator. Poor planning by staff made the overall experience far less moving.
Julia Herring
Highly recommend the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. Set aside an hour to visit as lines can be long, but a thoughtful and lasting modern art display.
Rea
The Hirshhorn has improved so much! I think everyone realizes this. The different temporary exhibits have been so wonderful and special. I have seen so much great art. There is a variety in the kind of art that they decide to show, both in terms of their temporary exhibitions and their permanent collection. There is always a good variety of modern artists who have decades upon decades of work and experience, as well as more experimental and newer artists. They choose to show everything art can possibly be, which I absolutely love. They also have a variety of events to check out. The museum is constantly trying new things and I really appreciate it. I can visit a few times a year and see new stuff!
Judy Sun
Awesome little art museum. Didn't get to see the time entry exhibit downstairs but everything else upstairs were really worth seeing as well.
Leon Rabinovich
Great museum that gets too easily lost among the Smithsonian museums. A must-visit of great exhibits with a statue garden in front.
Omar Shum
Not a big fan of contemporary art but modern section is good. However I prefer the East wing of NGA
Matthew Ford
Very modern, unusual collection. The Sculpture Garden holds a rare full cast of Rodin's "The Burghers of Calais", as well as "Walking Man" and "Balzac".
Dawn Barnes
This was a good museum for anyone interested in contemporary art. I only wish they had more exhibits to view while there.
Shi Yao Li
Staff here are very nice, but definitely overrated.
George Bruey
It was under construction but what was available to see was amazing. The Laurie Anderson exhibit was beautiful, surreal, and sad. I remember standing in one of the rooms and just staring at a piece on the floor. I stood there ten minutes crying and I couldn't even understand why.
Cameron Peltz
One of my favorite modern art museums to go to in DC! Always has powerful, thought-provoking exhibits I think about months or years later.
John Pacyga
The current Laurie Anderson exhibit was a pleasant surprise around every corner...
Madilyn and Mark Behlke
Wow! Amazing and sometimes disturbing works. Wide array of what our modern artists bring to the forefront of our awareness!
김연희
I arrived 9:40 am and I got kusama exhibition ticket for 10:30.
There are not many things but it was fantastic!
Rich Campoamor
Under renovation but still open to the public. Always a great exhibition to be found inside, in this case the Laurie Anderson Weather collection.
Brian Kleinke
Interesting modern art museum
Bernadine Mullin
If you love this type of art then you will like this museum,it's not my thing but I can appreciate it.
judi rockhill
The Laurie Anderson exhibit was far better than expected. It was busy but not crazy. I hope when the construction is done, the gift shop is bigger.
Oyun-Erdene Altan-Ochir
One of the coolest modern art experience!
Janice Girouard
Very interesting contemporary art. The sculpture garden was a mixture of older & new pieces well woven into the landscape plantings.
Gisselle B
My favorite thing about this museum is the art expositions.
Atul Patel
This was my favourite place whilst visiting DC. A must do.
Desa Sealy
Great exhibits in small, architecturally setting, for free! A DC jewel.
Daniel Harper
Great modern art museum. Has a strong emphasis on large pieces that are ment to be enjoyed as part of an exhibit.
Jason Broughton
Amazing contemporary art. Some of it is indescribable to place here. Very positive but makes you think. The current displays are amazing and unusual. But creativity generating thought to any examiners.
Franke Gordon
Not a big fan of the art exhibit of the married couple fighting in the lobby. They kept yelling and throwing other art exhibits at each other but I respect that artistic decision and I quite enjoyed the acting. Besides that a great art museum with captivating paintings and truly inspired exhibits. Just go to it its free and its good
Brian
Trying to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition but the staff stopped allowing people in after 4:30 even though the museum closes an hour later. Tried to visit the second day but the museum was closed because of public holiday.
Rain D
Excellent museum in DC
李彦凝
I love this museum so much! It’s only an hour walking inside, but you can take a lot lovely photos.
Nicholas Giamblanco
Very cool spot!! Modern art that's sure to spark thought. Very interesting layout. Also, good coffee on the main floor!
Jaimz Green
A more modern art gallery, featuring changing exhibits of newer, famed artists.
Dan Cook
One of my favorite museums in DC. The rotating exhibits are usually quite spectacular.
Niece Mac
Was okay had some cool pictures and artwork.
Perks Advisor
Permanent collection has a number of interesting pieces including "The Weight of History 5 Nights" by Cuban Reynier Leyva Noro
João Pedro Amaral
The building structure is astonishing. The exhibits are very interesting for people who like modern and contemporary art.
Nate Kobs
Great layout. Great location. Friendly staff
Amanda Marbut
Art is very objective and this particular art museum is not for everyone. If you do not like abstract and non-conventional art forms, you are better off going to another museum. It is a fairly small gallery compared to the other art museums in the area, but they are limited by the size of the building.
Sarah
Beautiful artwork, range of interesting and immersive art exhibits
tingting dai
Very nice experience
J. Stephen Lee
We visited this museum in early January. It was easy to get into unlike some of the other more popular museums on the Mall. The building itself is interesting. The Mark Bradford exhibit worked well in the circular gallery of the cylindrical building. The museum is also quite manageable to visit. You can see everything in an hour or so.
Sadaf Ahmed
This is a wonderful museum of contemporary art. It is quite small which makes it lovely for a couple of hours. The exhibits are really exciting and we did a really fantastic tour. It was my favourite Washington Museum and absolutely worth a trip!
R KM
Always a fantastic collection and exhibition.
James R Southard
Always my favorite in the city.
Kara Clark
Overall pretty interesting museum....free and plenty of space.
Steve Brookman
Modern art museum right on the Mall.
Easy access. Free entry. Small cafe serving nice coffee and cakes in the foyer.
Escalators and lifts to all floors.
Some displays were really very interesting and thought provoking. Others appealed less. But I guess that's the nature of art.
Lots of security staff around which felt a little claustrophobic, but again I guess that's a cultural thing.
All in all an interesting way to spend 2 or 3 hrs but not as extensive or far reaching as some modern art museum I have been to.
Brock Heller
My favorite museum in DC. Contemporary installations with beautiful and occasionally mesmerizing exhibits that showcase a large variety of artists and mediums. I can't see a reason I'd stop going!
Aaroniero K
I really enjoyed it stopped by just to see what it was but went down stairs and stayed for the live mural painting and experience. I was never one for museums or abstract art however I ended up staying and wanting to stay until the place closed!! Definitely bring your kids here for selfies and just to get them into the world of art and really paying attention; perfect place for gateway into it!
Vincent Hawkins Jr
The museum for the people. Morden art cool sculptures and artifacts. Must see!
Katherine Leonard
This museum is one of the best in the city. It is not overwhelmingly big, like the national gallery or national portrait gallery. It’s perfect to spend an afternoon wandering around the exhibits. They change fairly often, so you can go back again and again and see new things. The shop has some cool stuff in it—great for gifts that are fun but also functional. The outside of the building is weirdly hideous, though. Sculpture garden is fine. Good proximity to many great restaurants to go eat after you visit.
Darron Wood
Very interesting art. A must visit!
G Aquino
This Smithsonian museum dedicated to modern art of all kinds is truly magnificent. The exhibits are well curated and presented, and cover a wide range of topics and mediums. The museum's mobile website even helps identify the pieces on display using augmented reality.
The Manifesto video exhibit (featuring Cate Blanchett) really stood out for us. It was beautifully shot and thought provoking.
There are limited food options, so you'll probably want to grab lunch someplace outside the museum, but the gift shop is delightful and its staff is super friendly.
Allot at least two hours if you want to see everything at a comfortable pace.
Matt Filbert
Love the sculpture garden as is, but excited for the upcoming revamp. Also very impressed with the trippy Laurie Anderson exhibit currently on the second floor
Caterina Ositashvili
Great free museum in nice location close to many parks with mature trees
Tia Delay
One of my favorite museums in DC
Bill Luna
Tickets were a gift so I don't know the cost.
Giovanna Chavez
I love this place, from the gardens to the permanent and also changing displays. The store in the basement is a nice place to get souvenirs, although a little pricey.
Justin Johnston
The exhibits here can be esoteric and not all of them are family friendly, but for adult museum goers this is one of the better choices in the district. Always good for a free afternoon's entertainment, and I make it a point to check out the rotating exhibits. They change every few months so it always feels fresh.
Amy Toman
This is a beautiful museum. We enjoyed the exhibit we went to, which was especially easy to view because we bought memberships to the Museum. The exhibit was absolute wonderful, and had to do with mirrors. We were not necessarily fond of the rest of the museum, where many of the works were spread out a bit far, and seemed to be too similar to things we'd seen at other museums in Washington. We would definitely come back for an exhibit, but as just a museum visit, I think we've settled on the one and done.
Alli Lapps
the rotating exhibits are so great and always a new experience to reflect on
Patrick Hein
Modern/contemporary art museum with interesting exhibits. If you "get" modern art, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Hirshhorn. It's not really my scene, but I still enjoyed the 1.5 hours I spent here. Highly recommend for any art lovers though
Anshuman Swain
Extremely well curated art pieces. The exhibits are quite well lighted and this provides a good experience for the visitors. Some of the art pieces are interactive, making them quite an attraction. If you visit the museum, you must spend at least three hours to explore the exhibits.
Allison Blair
When I first visited here about 3 years ago, I decided that this is my favorite place in DC for multiple reasons. On a very consistent basis, they display modern and contemporary art that is thought provoking, boundary pushing, and creatively enriching. Some of my favorites would have to be more of the digital artworks or interactive exhibits like Pulse, Belief + Doubt, Suspended Animation, and even now, Manifesto. Just the fact that they are supporting the craft of video, animation, immersions, and other digital installations, I think that's so huge and so inspiring. All the staff are kind and helpful, the space is gorgeous and well set up. I could easily spend a whole day here. Honestly.
Allison Lau
I frequent this museum quite a bit - their collection size is not overwhelming, and I like their emphasis on sculpture and installation art. Their exhibits usually rotate every 6 months, and I gain a different perspective with each visit because of their solid content in modern and contemporary art. As for the interior and building aesthetics themselves, I am a fan of the hollowed cylinder and lack of corners.
Min Cheng
An excellent, really cool little museum with well-curated exhibitions!
Nam Mai
Nice museum out of all the Smithsonian museums on the Mall. Contemporary art is my kind of tea here, but this museum fits the ticket well. Exhibitions are very well organized here, with an emphasis on modern and post-classical themes. Wonderful place to visit if you only have a few hours!
Joseph Raczynski
Much larger more immersive experience here. Larger fully dedicated rooms for exhibits. It's definitely worth a visit on the Mall.
