Reviews of Frist Art Museum
Chirelle Pearson
Only one of the exhibits were open when we visited, which was unfortunate. It’s a cheap activity for something to do. Informational & cool to see, I guess I just expected more exhibits to be open. We were able to see the medieval bologna exhibit. The books are really cool to see. Interesting to see how things were interpreted in that era. The building is beautiful! Check out which exhibits are open. Would recommend it more if there were more than one exhibits open.

Very nice museum. I’m glad I visited on my last day. It was a pleasure and even peaceful to calmly view all that was displayed and read/learn about the displays. It’s not big but I’d give myself some time if I were you so that you can read and understand the history behind the exhibits….allowing them to come to life! Reasonably priced. Even the gift shop is nice. I recommend! I read that the exhibits change thus I shared some pics! Enjoy!

Super small but very old and elegant building. Which compensated for how this place only had two artists and one was spread in 3 rooms when could fit in a small room. It was a great visit and we now intend to visit Kansas City to see the remaining of the collection of weaving splendor. Every one in the building was super friendly. The old post office still visible and that made the visit and the fee worthwhile.

It should be called Frist Art Exhibition Hall. This is a museum that only has limited exhibits and no permanent collection. The only exhibit that was showing was Matthew Ritchie’s “A Garden In The Flood” which I enjoyed. The art deco building was beautiful. I will probably go back when I came back to Nashville depending on the exhibit.
White & Gray Matters
A great place to vist whether on vacation or you are a resident.
Beautiful building inside and out, the visitor parking area with the fall leaves were stunning. The inside of the building is so nice and beautiful by itself.
They have a nice gift shop with neat items and its nice they have a self coat check. The activities center was really neat to experience and play around with. The giant light bright station was a lot of fun.
The dishes and south African displays/art were my favorite to see. I really enjoy the visits I made here.
Adrian Alamillo
I absolutely love this place. I purchased a dual membership so me and my husband could go, but really I got it for myself. It's never crowded and so quiet. The pieces are always well taken care of and the displays are beautiful.

Had great timing coming here as there were three exhibitions open. Virginia Overton’s section was interesting especially the piece “Sister Ham” which is a bronze recreation of cured pork leg that the artist’s sister usually makes. I wish they had more exhibits as it kept me wanting more. The building’s facade is also beautiful.

The museum had one exhibition which surprised me. The exhibit was very nice, very nice. However the price should have been reduced for entry. The woman Artis Alma W Thomas was from Washington, DC and she grew up around the corner from where I lived as a child. She was a black artist that could not put her in museums however she has arrived after her death.
Sam Herrington
I recently visited the Frist for the first time and it’s absolutely beautiful. The building itself (the former post office) has a lot of architectural charm, and everyone I spoke with who works/volunteers there was very knowledgeable and kind. I visited to see the Light Space Surface exhibit from LA, and I can’t wait to go back and see many, many more exhibits there! Such a unique, open and effective space for showing off incredible works of art!
Casey Gordon
The Alma Thomas exhibit was great, but really the only thing open when we went. The museum needs to do a better job with disruption avoidance during visiting hours. It is hard to enjoy the art to the sounds of a hammer drills and saws.
Brenna D
I visited Nashville and needed a place to spend time before a late flight, visiting the Frist Art Museum exceeded my wants and expectations. Their exhibits are thoughtful and inspiring, their guides are helpful. I loved the interactive art station with printmaking, color theory, and painting for kids and adults.
Good facilities, too. I walked and took public transport, so I did not have to worry about the parking. Their parking is paid so people should know that in advance.
Patrick Fraser
Fantastic art museum. At the time of this review, December 2021, they were running an Art Deco exhibit and an exhibit on Medieval Bolognese art. Both were really interesting and well done. They have an art studio area where you can make your own art and learn more about the art they have on display. Also, get the parking validation ticket as it dropped my parking fee from $20 to $4! Kids are free to get in.
Mark Manning
The architecture alone is worth a visit. The two featured exhibits on display when I visited were both unique in varying mediums as well as engaging in subject matter. There's truly a lot packed in to this relatively small space.
U. Chinedu Amaefula
A beautiful and robust art gallery with soothing aesthetics. A definite tour destination. Perfect for locals, families, couples, and individual art enthusiasts. Enjoy the multiple curated art installations with an open mind and a slow-flow walk.
Marwan
This is a very small exhibit. It is ok over all . If you have some time that you want to spend and you don’t know how to spend probably this is your Place otherwise it doesn’t worth the time. There’s a good section for kids also maybe your kids will like it.
Peter Gerard
Great contemporary art exhibitions in a beautifully restored art deco post office. Plus a fun room where you can make your own art. The museum is a perfect size - just enough galleries to spend an hour or so. They also have free lockers.
Lari S
There are many photos I took but I think you should go to see! Very interesting exhibitions and as I heard, they change it all the time. Loved the section for the kids there are a lot of art activities for kids and people who assist, great day to spend in AC when it’s hot and make your kids busy (don’t have kids, but as an adult I enjoyed the activities haha)
Felipe Cavalcante
I love the FRIST. A place to rest my mind. I had some of the best memories in Nashville in this place. It’s simply amazing, peaceful and open minded place. I strongly recommend it!
T EB
Be prepared for its smallness!
They’ve sacrificed some space for the art quest and studios; so perhaps think of it more as a working studio with some exhibits versus a museum. They do have some curator shows which are certainly interesting, and your kids might like art quest which is hands on, etc
Stayed for the 4 to 5 pm curator/artist walkthrough with mark Ritchie. My bit was X-ray fluorescence to unlock time dimensionality of layered art and fractal expansion of his metal pieces.
Conclude that the cozy experience of the Frist is probably best experienced as a walking artists sálon with the artist through their own pieces, and to jettison the expectation of a large repository of pieces; since the Frist isn’t it. Without that last artist show I might’ve been a bit more disappointed in what I was getting for cost.
Also, check out the student art along the walkway from front desk! Those kids are really the future!
Stephanie Polakowski
This is a must see if visiting Nashville- even if you are not an art enthusiast; the architecture of the building itself is noteworthy. Spring of 2022: The current exhibits at the Frist were outstanding and I highly recommend checking out the Alma W Thomas one if you are interested in color theory, black history and female artists who are changing the world! There were over 150 pieces in this exhibit and the largest one ever of just her artwork, ranging from her watercolors to acrylics to some of her puppetry period sketches and puppets. I learned a lot from this expansive exhibit and felt inspired upon leaving. I think it paired beautifully with the Nashville Art Teacher exhibit that showcased over 30 pieces created by actual current K-12 art teachers in the area. So much talent and a wide array of medium. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well. There is a parking lot too which is convenient and reasonable at $2 an hour with museum admission/discount.
Wilfredo Ulacio
What an incredible museum! We just loved all the exhibition and how welcoming the staff were ❤️ Definitely a must if you enjoy art
Ronise Parks
First time customer went on a Sunday around 2p parking is validated paid $4 for parking, would recommend buying tickets in advance $15 for 18+ free if under 18 yrs old. There are two floors first floor is museum second floor is arts and crafts they closed at 530p. Overall experience was great they have a gift shop and coffee Cafe, clean inside on second floor they do require you to put away your cell phones and sanitize before starting arts and crafts. Would recommend

I went specifically to see the LIGHT, SPACE, SURFACE show which will be up until September 4, 2022. Standout works included Mary Corse, Doug Wheeler, Norman Zammitt, Gisela Colon, Guy Dill, and a very small James Turrell work.
Lauren Nelsen
Wow. We came and saw the knights in armor exhibit and the light and surface exhibit. Both were interactive and fun. This museum is great for kids too, as they have their own play space and areas to draw and play. The gift shop is amazing! The lady working the desk was super friendly and she helped us navigate the shop. We ended up buying some souvenirs. Overall a great time, and only $15 a ticket!
Nancy Holcomb
Went and saw the Knights display. Great museum with a hands-on kids section. Loved how the Knights display was very detailed
Kristina S
A lovely spot to stop in! We enjoyed the Light exhibit, as well as the Knights in Armour! Staff were very friendly and helpful!
sophia a
It was nice to visit and the exhibits are beautiful. The knights armor one was amazing and the kids area was great when the tiny ones wanted to wonder and touch.
Angie F
This museum is fun to visit. Inside, it used to be U.S. postal building and changed into an art museum. I love the structure of the building inside. Goes well with the art museum 😀 While we were there, they had the Elementary, Middle, High school, and maybe colleges students near by, that entered in their art work. We had so much fun looking at their art works. We even looked at the exhibits Matthew Ritchie A Garden In The Flood, Weaving Splendor treasures of Asian Textiles, and Virginia Overton Saved. We really enjoyed it. Thank you so much, First Art Museum!
Brian S
Note that this museum has no permanent collection. The two exhibits on display were quite nice and the building which appears to be an old Art Deco post office was also beautiful. If the website would have been more explicit about not having a permanent collection, I could have planned less time here and squeezed in another venue for the day.
Tim McPherson
Great exhibits. The kids loved the hands-on art room.
Yonas Simon
The Frist Museum is a cultural staple in the city! I only have positive things to say about this spot.
Each time I visit, I’m amazed by the diversity of exhibits that they put on and the level of depth put into each one. In my review, I’ve included photos from their Picasso and Glasgow Style exhibits. I always leave here learning something new.
From their volunteers to the community outreach coordinator, the people that work here are so friendly and hospitable. I feel comfortable letting my little brother and sister explore an exhibit unaccompanied.
This museum attracts great visitors as well. I’ve meet people from all over the globe and different walks of life.
Next time I go back, I plan on taking full advantage of their visitor parking in the back and inquiring about their in person community events.
Sheldon Watson
Very interesting exhibits that change frequently. Discounted parking behind the museum. Docent tours around 12-1pm were really interesting and added a great deal to the exhibit.. definitely worth any wait.
Clinton Newkirk
Awesome museum in Nashville. We went and walked through the exhibits and were impressed. The upstairs had a cool arts and craft section that would be good for the kids. So if this is your cup of tea check it out. This place is worth the whiskey.
Michael DePoortere
The current Knights in Armor exhibition was a fun experience for my girls to visit. Our family loves the rotating exhibition list throughout the year as they get to see items from all over the world. This is the perfect place to expand your children's curiosity about history and art.
Max Chilton
Super beautiful building, only had one singular exhibit, I think they were under maintenance. The exhibit they had was loaned from Denver, but still beautiful. Nice hour spent.
Brian Helming
It's smaller than expected. They have 2 galleries and one was closed while an install was going in. They charged 10% less to offset but it should have been much less. Unless you're the type to sit and stare at a painting for 30min it's so short you'll be done walking through in less than an hour. And I was trying to make the most of it. It's a nice place they just need more going on to make it worthwhile. If both galleries was open it would be better and if they had more interaction activities it would be 4 stars.
Thomas Hemingson
We went to the Picasso exhibit and there was another exhibit upstairs about the Early Western United States. It is a quiet atmosphere where everybody is trying to maintain social distancing as much as possible. There are no barriers between some of the artwork and the observers, so if you have unruly children, I would recommend not bringing them. Each painting, sculpture, etc has a little info card next to it. Of course nobody has time to read them all, but by the time you get through each exhibit, you have learned enough to make the whole thing worthwhile. I particularly liked reading the brochure about the buildings history. The is a gift shop but the line was so long to get in we decided to pass. There is also a children interactive exhibit but I think you have to purchase tickets in advance to get in, but it might be worth investigating online. Overall an enjoyable experience.
Ricky Valero
this wasn’t my first visit here but first since in awhile.
i went to see the picasso exhibit and it was breathtaking.
they always have things put out in a perfect way that’s easy to access plus organized to see it in a cool manner.
this is one of the best art museums i’ve been too. they do a great job with all the new exhibits
Angie Kinsey
An immersive art experience for people of all ages.
There's usually two different themed exhibits on the first floor, a new-age exhibit on the second floor, and of course the hands-on children's art experience on the second floor as well.
There's food in the cafe, it's wheelchair accessible, and worth a regular visit.
Dave Towne
Our family has had a membership since we moved to Nashville. Always friendly staff, simple parking and it's close enough to the highway you don't get caught in the city traffic. Kid friendly with a whole area dedicated to exploring art make The Frist a great family day activity.
Scott
Only one exhibit so it was a bit lean, if I’m being honest. We were able to kill 45 minutes and see the one cool Medieval Knight exhibit. But we were left saying “now what” way too early. It was a reduced cost entry, but it seems like they do that most of the time. In addition, the gift shop had virtually nothing that connected to the exhibit, saying they sold out of the one catalogue the exhibit said to check out, even though the exhibit is running for another 7 weeks. The other 99% of the museum shop is just a bunch of generic gifts that don’t make sense in a museum. Just kinda odd.
Christine Kelleher
We arrived between exhibits so the tickets were cheaper but the building alone is worth it! So beautiful!!
Ning Xiong
The exhibition about the Chinese / Japanese royal robes was really cool. The staff was very friendly and told us about the history of the museum being a post office previously. That fun fact made the experience more noteworthy.
Jenn V
The Frist Museum is a gem. They are adhering to Covid protocols. The Picasso Exhibit was a treat and we are so thankful they were able to obtain this exhibit from France. I have not had the opportunity to see a Picasso in person so I was glad to share this experience with my 3 teenagers. We all liked reading quotes by Picasso throughout the exhibit and the information provided next to each painting was often very interesting. We also were able to see the exhibit of the American West paintings and we all really enjoyed that as well. My girls and husband would honestly say they enjoyed that exhibit more than Picasso. Lol. The staff were all extremely helpful and kind. They are having you wait until 5 minutes before your ticket time to let you in. So no need to get there early.
Tangmo SJ.
good and nice but less compare with price .parking lot available in back of museum
Mary Nunaley
First time visiting the Frist and it was quite pleasant. You can feel the energy of the old post office. The building is spectacular, from a certain point of view.
The Picasso Figures exhibit shed new light on one of my favorite artists.
Victoria Blalock
Breath taking art work in the exhibits. Very over crowded for covid, but the mask rules are enforced. The Picasso exhibit was a once in a lifetime experience, and the western exhibit was surprisingly wonderful as well!
Laura Weston
An outstanding museum with a lovely permanent collection, terrific travelling exhibits (We just got the Picasso exhibit's only stop in the US!), a remarkable interactive center for kids. The architecture and history of the building are worth seeing on their own. We are lucky to have this gem in our city.
Sharded Glass
Been for multiple exhibits, and always enjoy it!
Rhiannon Marie
My first art museum. I visited in 2021 and it was beautiful.
Michael Richardson
Took about an hour but I enjoyed myself entirely. The interactive exhibit is currently closed but I was not not at all disappointed, Will be back again. Really clean, floors marked for direction and staff was great. Made for a great afternoon.
Victor Wang
Absolutely amazing museum with a ton of exhibits. The artifacts are wide ranging and the timeline is quite wide. There's something here that everyone will enjoy. I like the fun interactive exhibits as well. The modern/contemporary pieces were also fantastic. Best part is the admission is included in to the ticket for the country museum and hall of fame.
Juliana Simone
Beautiful stone museum in the heart of Nashville with an art deco interior. We had attended a J.M.W. Turner water color exhibit at the Mystic Seaport Museum in CT on its last day in February, so we were excited to note the Frist Art Museum was showing one, as well, called "A Quest For The Sublime" in their Ingram Gallery.
We made a point of going today to look at their collection of 75 pieces which consisted of Turner's oils, watercolors and sketches. It was wonderful to see up-close so many of his large oils that dealt with both his biblical depictions and European scenery. There are quite a few oils and watercolors of his interpretations of the ocean which he is often remembered for as an artist.
The lady taking our admission tickets was thrilled we had been to the Turner exhibit in Mystic, and said their museum has been trying to get a collection of his work to show since 2001!
The exhibit runs through May 31, 2020. There are many other artists on display here currently that if you have the time you should see. There is a cafe and gift shop on the premises.
Joel Chirinos
Great experience. The exhibit was amazing and enlightening. The building has a beautiful layout with many art pieces by local talent as well. Definitely recommend a visit.
Ethan Roldan
Amazing fine arts exhibits and activities! The Frist Art Museum is home to many great opportunities for attendees to view and create art. Parking is $2/hr and admission is free for children to 18 and under. With frequently changing exhibits, this museum is a great place for locals and tourists alike.
Brandon Hehn
A nice place to go with family. Spent time here with my boys, but only the South Western exhibit is currently open to the public.
Cristela
This is a small, but thoughtfully curated Museum. When we went, they were showcasing native American women artists. I've lost at least two hours if you really enjoy reading different aspects of the artwork. Small, fun gift shop.
Kasey Brown
Very nice, clean, beautiful atmosphere! I went while an exhibit was being built, so I wasn't able to see much, but what I did get to admire was absolutely wonderful!
Niraj Trivedi
Amazing way to kill some time in nashville.
Himadri
Beautiful collection, reasonably priced and parking is only $2 per hour for museum visitors. Second floor has a colorful space for kids to do artwork. The museum is not super big but we spent around 1.5 hours going through all the collections.
Katrina Kassis
Wow! what a great museum. Went here on a recommendation and was not disappointed! The Chaos and Awe exhibit was breathtaking. The photography show was nice but not my favourite. The civil rights show was also very interesting. A good size museum - you can expect to spend about 1 hour if you're quick. They even have a virtual reality piece that really plays with your mind. It is the artists version of a self portrait... and you certainly feel like you're inside the chaos of another person's mind! All in all a great museum. Especially since anybody staying at a Nashville hotel gets in for free (It is worth the fee though)
Virginia Yurich
If you have kids don’t miss this place!!! Excellent family location. Kids 18 and under are free and the kids art area is so fun that our kids requested to go back years later. They can paint, do stamps, try printmaking, make stop motion videos and SO MUCH MORE. This is one of the best places in all of downtown Nashville to take kids. Even really little ones will love all the interactive art stations!
Kaitlyn Pool
It is a great art museum! There is an excellent gift shop. There are activities upstairs for kids and adults. Plus, if you are a student at Watkins College of Art (which I happen to be) you can get in for free on certain days. On Monday (August 26th 2019) we went on a field trip for our Core I: Surface, Space, and Time class.
Carrie Finnegan
Always enjoy our trips to the Frist. The exhibits and the kids art area are a great way to kill a couple of hours with the kids. We also like stopping in for the last hour of the day on our way to dinner/date night
Beecat
Very small inside compared to the exterior. Modest exhibits, but art is subjective. A decent way to spend an hour.
L3xTheR3x
A very large, formal building, in the art deco style of architecture, with two floors. There is a cafe beside the entrance for anyone hungry, as you cannot bring food into the main exhibit. The hallway leading up the main exhibit features various student artworks from around Tennessee. The main exhibit features an expansive collection of works by various famous artists, with an informative plaque beside each one. There is a gift beside the main exhibit, featuring mainly exquisite jewelry made buy various crafters.
Philipp H.
Enjoyed.the combination of old and contpotary art.- the had a stunning light exebition as well as knight armor from Europe on display.
The building itself is a must visit!
Paul Allen
Nice art decor. Changing exhibitions so not as much to see as usual.
Yoon Soo Park
Excellent and must-visit museum in Nashville!
Sammi Alsaleh
I hate not giving a 5/5 because the artists exhibits displayed at the moment were great. Overall just missing some intangibles. But a good museum nonetheless.
Andrea S.
This place is so pretty. With my reciprocal membership I got free admission to this space during a rainy afternoon. The frida exhibition is beautiful and the Art Deco Desing of the building makes it charming. Don’t forget their Art Space where you can do sketching, painting and pressing (for all ages) and their gift shop
Brittany Swanson
This review is solely for the Children's section, since my children have never allowed me to investigate the rest of the museum:
My kids love coming here, it's a great rainy day activity and it never gets too crowded. They rotate stations more often than I anticipated, so there's always something new to check out.
My daughter and I love to draw the mannequin. It's a great place to allow kids to be creative and where there are plant of volunteers to help so you don't have to do it all for them!
Cai F
This museum is AMAZING and the price is great. Kids 18 and under are free which is always great. College students are 10 dollars and free certain days. The museum offers rotating exhibits. This month was Eric Carle and it was cool. They also have a whole area where you can do arts and crafts and other activities. I will definitely be taking the kids back.

I was almost convinced not to go to the Frist by a young people who misread the fee structure and were not impressed either by the many b&w historical photos displayed on the lower level of the corridors. I am glad I decided to check things out myself.
When I walked in, I was first hit by the silence, like I was entering a place of worship, one filled with reverence. Why? Then I saw the photos - all along both walls of the corridors heading towards the ticket counter.i started reading the first blown up photo of a newsprint from 1960s and I was lost in the history of the struggles and fight for acceptance by the African-Americans of the time. Rev Martin Luther King Jr’s name and pictures came up over and over along the walls. His support and fight for freedom, for equality for his people, leading to his assassination in 1968 and further determination of the African-American people of America. I teared up when reading how they were locked out from entering a pool, how the “Western” white people protested desegregation at schools. Such repetitive acts of discrimination has occurred everywhere that was occupied by Europeans, especially the English, who invaded most continents.
But, let’s stop there now. To return to the Frist, I was impressed with the beautiful interior and architecture of the place. High ceilings and soft lighting. Then, I went to the ticket counter and asked how much for the entry - her response “$12 for all 3 exhibits”. I asked if they had a regular exhibit, hopefully free for the public, and she said No. I decided $12 was fair, paid for it, was given a wrist band to wear. Off I went; and though I am not a fan of modern art, the “Chaos & Awe” exhibition was excellent. The selected art of contemporary artists resonated with the name. I am not an art buff but I have selected photos to portray what I am trying to convey.
I think every Art Museum needs local and international support to keep the Arts alive, so, if you are local or a tourist to Nashville, do go in and enjoy their exhibits. The staff at Frist are courteous and actually walked up to me to tell me that the place was closing in 15 minutes when I had walked to the top floor for the Photography exhibition. What? Where had the time gone? I had been there 3 hours!
Glad i had not dismissed the place on someone else’s opinion.
Guy Thomas
Loved the exhibitions that were on when I visited. The building is beautiful and clean and the staff are friendly.
Sean Noack
A solid museum that had a blend of galleries but a lack of items to put forth. It was trying to use space that should be put to use for twice the volume. Maybe I'm spoiled on my hometown museums' free permanent collection, and the fact it's one of the best, but The Frist was less spectacular than its touring galleries and for the 10$ underwhelmed me with its permanent. We caught the last day of the Twins "Osgemeos" and that was the shining star, talk about a unique vision. The horror gallery was the other touring section and was incredibly interesting and added a nice dose of history to boot. If those galleries weren't there, not sure what my thoughts would be.

Great museum I wish I had frequented more but I got 2 check out legendary film director Harmony Korine’s exhibit, Shadows and Loops, a few years ago 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🐐📽🎞🎥 …

It cost 15 dollars to gain access to the galleries.
There are currently 3 exhibits at the Frist Art Museum. The first and most developed is called The Hearts of Our People and showcases Native Women Artists. The second is an exhibit that focuses on the art and life of Eric Carle, who made The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The third and smallest exhibit is called Osgemeos, which presents itself as a very short-lived and vibrant experiment with acid.
There were many incredible pieces of craftsmanship in the Hearts of Our People exhibit. The themes revolved around female empowerment and the personal experiences of women. If you enjoy such topics, it's the place to go. If you don't, then... Don't go.
The Eric Carle was a nice exhibit with some in-depth looks at the creative process and an area with video of the author reading the book. There are play areas for children around the upper floor.
The Osgemeos I don't have much to say about- I walked in, walked through the two rooms, then walked out. It was colorful.
There is also a hallway directly in front of the door that houses the Community Arts Gallery, which has examples of African-American cultural art, graffiti, and murals.
The museum is clean and orderly, has chairs and wifi, a gift shop, information and membership services. I gave the museum 3 stars because of the cost and how little variety there currently is in the galleries. I walked through the galleries in 30-45 minutes and ended up confused, thinking there would be more. There was no abstraction, impressionism, or other 'fine art' pieces, which I personally feel that, you know... An art museum should have.
Having seen everything, I would not return to the Frist Art Museum until the galleries cycled out or collected a wider variety of pieces.
Lauren Russell
Wonderful museum. Not too overwhelming but lots to do. Epic kids area - my toddler had a blast. Handicap and stroller accessible!!! Parking does cost money but it was cheap. They give you a card to reduce costs when you buy your ticket.
Tara Allen 51
Beautifully renovated museum with lovely exhibits and large gift shop. The museum is two stories and has a rich history. Parking is available on site for the museum.
Reace T
The museum was free for my 3 little ones who are all under 18 years old (the age for free admission). There was only an admission fee for me (for those with a Bank of America account, you can visit for free on the first weekend of the month). I was not sure my elementary aged kids would find the museum of much interest but after about the third exhibit room, they were coming along and finding different interests in each picture, painting, sculpture, and exhibit. To find at the end of the gallaries there is a children's experience room, my crew's visit went from being "okay" to "that was kinda fun".
It ended up being a good worthwhile trip for us.
Claire Bone
This may be a small art museum, but she be mighty! We had an enjoyable day exploring the three beautiful exhibits displayed as well as a bonus photo journalism exhibit in the civil rights movement. Forget the music in Nashville, the art and history are not to be missed.
Zubair Ahmad
Art museum downtown. The permanent exhibit is the Roman located downstairs. Nick Cave show upstairs on view til mid May was quite eclectic. The art deco design might have been my favorite part. It's a quick visit, can go through it in under an hour. Not the first place I'd visit but interesting nonetheless.

Definitely worth scheduling time to visit this arts centre, there is more to it than meets the eye. The interest starts with the building that is a converted mail sorting centre, and hence the architecture stands out, elegant, deliberate, and lavish in features, materials and execution e.g the special wood block flooring, amazing corridors and staircases, impressive doors and other features... look up go see... anyway it makes a perfect building to house art and expression of all forms and genres in their galleries, and this is what it does... be blown away the moment you go through the front entrance and enjoy... you need a good two / three hours if you want to take time and see everything. Aside the exhibitions which they change regularly, there is a strong connection to the community, and areas for community art and activities, which I found vibrant, fun, and nourishing to the soul.. You will enjoy what ever is on, and the gift shop is extensive and worth a browse... Go for it, enjoy!
Debbie Cornett
We visited the Paris 1900 Exhibit about art, fashion, lifestyle and the 1900 Exhibition. Fabulous!! Historic and tres chic!
The discovery exhibit upstairs is super fun for kids of all ages- and adults!

Wonderful museum. The exhibits (3 right now plus a great local photo exhibit in he hall on gentrification) are wonderful, the building is beautiful too, and the cafe has great sandwiches and cakes and of course fruit tea. You can sit outside or in and have wine or beer too. There was a live guitarist relaxing (sort of classical) music 6-8pm. I asked for a parking discount which saved a lot of money on parking. The hands on art room is amazing and great for all ages. There were at least 6 very nice art activities in the room. I highly recommend this museum!
Jon New
Beautiful museum that frequently changes their exhibits. They have some excellent traveling exhibits.
nancy sommers
Loved the art deco aspects of the building. Interesting exhibits. Nice gift shop. Friendly employees.
Ally Thomas
Excellent value! High quality, accessible, thought provoking traveling exhibits and incredibly friendly staff. There is free art-making everyday in the Martin ArtQuest studio including watercolors, stop motion animations, printmaking and an amazzzing interactive light board that is photographically irresistible. 18 and under are always free!
Mary West
This is a lovely little art museum and I'm so glad I went to see the Alma Thomas exhibit. The artwork was awesome: so vibrant and colorful! The museum exhibit was laid out very well and logically, and the informational signage was helpful to understand her life and art. The interactive art lab where you can make different artworks inspired by her art was my favorite part! The volunteers were so friendly and helpful. I know it was primarily for kids but I love my block print and would have probably just played there all day if left to my own devices! The upcoming exhibits all look interesting too. If you're visiting Nashville, I'd highly recommend stopping by! It's close to Broadway and lots (LOTS) of restaurants!
Mariam Othman
I needed a somewhere to pass the time during my stay to Nashville before a late flight, and the Frist Art Museum fulfilled both my needs and expectations. Their guides are beneficial, and their exhibitions are thoughtful and inspirational. The interactive art space with printmaking, color theory, and painting for both adults and children was fantastic. excellent facilities I didn't have to bother about parking because I walked and rode public transportation. People should be aware that their parking is paid for in advance.
Teresa Hickey
The Frida exhibit is a MUST!! The museum is fairly small compared to museums in bigger cities. There’s reasonable parking available behind the building, just be sure to get the voucher when buying your ticket. The gift shop is a decent size. The Frist is a great way to spend a couple hours away from the more touristy parts of Nashville.
Kisha Burton
Great exhibits, beautiful building. We really enjoyed the hands on art room. Great for kids and adults alike.
Noah Burke
Beautiful art museum that looks like an Art Deco dream! Large exhibition space with high profile exhibits from Monet to Dorothea Lange. Kids are FREE and they large kids space upstairs can keep the occupied for hours as they create their own paintings, sculptures, films and reliefs.
Jeremy Dunn
Highly recommend the Frist Art Museum. Super chill and a lot of fun. Even the little ones had fun. Didnt want to leave.
Wesley Jones
Very nice.
I like the Frist center.
Would have liked a larger display.
Ben Blanton
The Frist is a wonderful museum. It is accessible, parking is plentiful and the exhibits are always very thoughtfully curated. The two primary galleries often compliment one another very well. A annual membership is a good idea, if not only for the timed tickets and cheaper parking - but to support the organization.
Sarah Arace
Always a great place to find refuge in Nashville. I renewed my membership (that expired during the shutdown) on this last visit and look forward to seeing upcoming exhibits and events.
Kara Walkers is what brought me back in. A few years ago I came to the Frist and, her artwork made me laugh one minute and cry the next. She didn’t disappoint... This was my first time seeing her sculptures, other types of 3D works and, an animation. I loved the feedback areas, transitions, and meditation space this exhibit provided. Extremely thoughtful.
Bravo to you for providing such a perfectly blended space.

It was an amazing experience, I went with my children and both had much fun in the kids area
Bell
I always love the Frist! They consistently have interesting and impressive exhibits happening. The Van Gogh and Picasso exhibits a few months ago were amazing. I also appreciate how they shin spotlights on smaller artists with impactful art. Can’t recommend this place enough! The images below are from Mary Sibande’s Red Purple Blue exhibit
Otto Rascon
I absolutely enjoyed the Dorothea Lange exhibit. The price of admission is worth it just to see her amazing work. The museum is beautiful, both inside and out.
Elizabeth Spitznagel Rose
Loved the Eric Carle exhibit! The Frist is open late on Thursday and Friday, so it's a great place to go after work and unwind. There were a few events there and lots of people - great vibrant atmosphere! The college student discount is an excellent deal too. Parking is $2/hr, thanks to the museum discount.
Katherine Romero
It was a nice exhibit about cuban art. I liked you get discount park with you admission tickets.
Emily Crow
Beautiful space. A bit strange that a city of Nashville's size doesn't have an Art Museum with a permanent collection. The shows were well curated and the space is really supportive of a variety of set ups.
Tiffany Rogers
One of the best at museums we've visited. The children's interactive was second to none.
Andrea Mercer
Great museum for adults and kids. I have been to several exhibits and they did not dissapoint. The curators have done a wonderful job at luring exquisite art. Upstairs on the 3rd level is the kids gallery and hands on area. My young son can spend hours crreating his art. Nice gift shop and a cafe in the building. The Frist is located very near other Nashville landmarks.
DD DD
Wonderful place. Must see when in Nashville. Great collections, beautiful building. Great staff. Gallery Shop worth a visit...great selection. Be sure to join the Frist and take advantage of the benefits and discounts.
Sylvia Rowe
Wonderful exhibit on Mexican Modernism! The museum is easy to navigate, and they have an affordable parking lot for visitors. The cafe is nice, too. Great way to spend a few hours.
Jann Griffiths
The Paris 1900 exhibit was absolutely fantastic. This was the first time I had visited the museum, which is the old Nashville post office that was renovated for this purpose.
Cam Busch
We had a fabulous visit to the Frist Art Museum. It was well worth our 3 hour visit! The Frida Kahlo exhibit was outstanding.
Katherine Stevens
My favorite art museum in Nashville. The galleries are changed out quite often. It is a beautiful building that is actually a repurposed post office. The building itself is rich in history and culture. There is even a cool kids space where you can create orignial pieces with your little piccasso. All the exibits are educational and interesting.
Sara Barrett
Excellent exhibits, but the highlight of our visit was the ArtQuest upstairs for kids of all ages. Lots of great hands-on art opportunities there. The one thing I would say is the gift shop is pretty pricey - the art museum in Chsttanooga has a much better selection of items in all price ranges. A plus is they validate your parking, so instead of paying 30 dollars for 3 hours we only paid 6 dollars.
Michiel Buitelaar
Beautiful museum - the building is actually more beautiful than its contents. And the latter are not many but very very nice.
It is a former post office. Impressive.
Friendly staff.
Frozen Proze
The Frist is always a delight... They have had art ranging from Japanese artifacts to Picasso's paintings! Always informative and well put together.
Del Gado
Had a blast. The kids activities room is amazing. My daughter had such a great time. Coloring, pairing, drawing.
Dylan
Such a nice museum. Even if I'm not super interested in the current exhibit, I still like to go. For the price there's no reason to not at least go check it out if you're at all interested in art.
Jess Baer
This is a small museum, which is why it's only $12 for an adult. It's a very cool building though with great exhibitions! They also have a gift shop and cafe. I went to see the Nick Cave exhibition and it was amazing! If you're traveling they will check your bags for no additional cost.
Courtney Fulgham
Quest for the Sublime by JMW Turner is their main exhibit right now and it was very underwhelming. The flags and Ghandi's letter to Hitler upstairs was cool, but that's all there was. I could be spoiled by the Dallas Museum of Art or maybe need to come back when a different exhibit is here.
Brian Auger
Seeing the building alone was worth the price of admission. Spectacular.
Chris Brown
Excellent exhibit! All the exhibits are great! We were there for the Impressionist exhibit this time. Really great anytime.
Candace Newson
This time around I checked out ArtQuest with my 5 and 3 year old nieces. Of course they loved it. There are a variety of activities for children and adults! We were literally there for hours.
Matthew Sullivan
A true gem in Nashville's crown! The art is amazing and always changing. The building is an Art Deco treasure. Our family purchases a membership every year, and it is money VERY well-spent!
Emily White
Beautiful art museum with great shows. It is very clean and has great descriptions of the art. I would definitely recommend people visit. Also, Thursday and Friday nights it is free for university students which is awesome.
Kristin Johnson (Kayaheartc)
Great place for family fun. They had a great lower floor exhibit (Samaria). Upper floor is great for kids to run off energy and do educational activities. Very nice staff and experience. Worth the price.
AOS ADMIN
I read about the exhibit in the news and planned a group vacation to go see. As a member of the High Museum and a supporter of the Arts, I became a member of the Frist as well. The building is beautiful to say the least and the exhibit was well presented. We spent all of our time 1+ hours just reading and absorbing Picasso's work. Will definitely plan another trip to return to take in the rest of the permanently housed and new exhibits.
Erin Fayermark
Love the renovated ArtQuest Gallery for kids!! There are so many different art stations for your little one to try out! The staff is also very helpful and encourage the parents to make some art too!
Mauricio Coss
The building is beautiful! Such a shame they don’t have a permanent exhibit but everything else is cool.
Brandon Blair
Lovely medieval armor exhibit. Great activity art area for kids of all ages. Wonderful and friendly staff.
Jeanni Grizzell
Picasso was amazing! Liliana Porter exhibit turned out to be my favorite! A must see!
Dylan Walter
Awesome museum - my second time passing through. Always a must see in Tennessee. The staff is super friendly and accommodating.
Claudio Mendoza
We came from Kalamazoo, MI, to see the "Picasso: Figures" exhibition at the Frist Art Museum. Picasso at his best. A gem in every sense, and no better motive to visit the lovely city of Nashville. My hat off to the Frist for putting up a show of this quality. The installations by Liliana Porter and the collection on the American West were also worth a detailed visit.
Deborah Buma
Wonderful excursion with grand kids to participate in arts of one of the masters. Really enjoyed our time viewing some masterpiece work.
Chad Gillock
Not a very large museum, but good exhibits and great presentation/ layout. Very helpful staff too.
Franklin Nouvet
Amazing Roman antiquities on loan from British Museums. Keep an eye out for surprise free events. Get the App, parking cheap and right behind biilding.
Massbaum
What a great addition to the Nashville arts community!! This museum holds some treasures.. I’ve visited during many different events and exhibits and all of them have been satisfying and rewarding.. My children love visiting the interactive exhibits on the top floor.. They spend hours creating their own works of art.. And the artwork that they are exposed to through the larger exhibits is just amazing.. Memberships can be expensive if you’re not a student, but we always go with the family membership.. It offers us some good options and it gives us a constant source of entertainment and inspiration throughout the year.. If you haven’t stopped into the Frist yet, do yourself a favor and check it out!!
Lisa Toland
This place is so extravagant and spectacular. Words cannot do justice for the love I have for the collections I saw during my visit. The Art Museum is just so beautiful, all the staff are very welcoming and professional and incredibly helpful. I was overwhelmed with the place and the recent collection just took my breathe away. You are allowed to take picture just no flash and you can get pretty close to the paintings too. It was just phenomenal. Great place to take families too there’s a kids room upstairs for kids to watch and play with paint and learn about it. Put this on your bucket list and worth the trip.
Ser Rengati
Depending on the exhibit, they could be worth visiting. Good to check their website before a visit. They have parking lot nearby with discount on endorsed Frist ticket
Kosie Tripp
We went to see the Picasso exhibit and we had a great time. They enforced masks, but sadly, there was no social distancing. You will have a great time if you enjoy art.
Andrew Morehead
The Frist is amazing. From the stripped classicism art deco to the cute kids interactive learning, this place is worth every penny. Head over to see the exhibits, provocative and thought provoking though they may be, and sit a while in the cafe. Then, if you get a chance, visit the awesome gift shop full of pertinent gifts to the exhibits.
Christina Blust
The building is gorgeous, and the art that comes through is so varied — from Kandinsky to cars to Tibetan monks to American masters to Nick Cave. Since they don't have a permanent collection, they can get really creative with exhibits. It's also a good event space both inside and out.
Josh Pagano
Small art museum. Some of the exhibits are quite good. But the overall impression is underwhelming
Sean Busick
The Frist Art Museum in Nashville is a must-visit attraction. It is one of the best art museums in the region, attracting a variety of the top national and international exhibitions. The Picasso Figures exhibit currently on display is outstanding. Check it out.
Danny
The building is an amazing example of art deco architect.
Sofia Gomezllata
I really loved it.
The building is an old postal office and it is gorgeous. The expositions were great. A nice selection with good explanation and a free audioguide. The top floor has interactive activities geared towards children, but also fun for adults to do.
Highly recommended, a nice 2-3 hour visit.
A Kim
Pretty good museum. The building architecture is very cool. Pro tip: You can go for free if you have your ticket from the Country Music Hall of Fame. That was a pleasant surprise that didn’t come up in my trip research. I liked the photography exhibit.
Ally
Beautiful grounds and building but thought there would be more art. Very helpful that there’s a free coat check if you’re travelling and the staff were nice and helpful.
Joel Davenport
Staring at works of Van Gogh, Gaudin, Monet, Renoir, etc., in an intimate exhibit... a wonderful way to spend a rainy day...
Aye Em
Beautiful exhibits. I can’t wait to go back to take it all in. The problem is, they close at 5:30 PM every day. This makes it really difficult to go to the museum for people who work regular job hours to visit. Especially if you so happen to also have a part-time job on the weekends.
Also, they charge for parking by the hour, and although they give you a great discount, don’t stay even a minute over the hour or you will be charged for two hours.
Of course, all that can be avoided by purchase an annual membership for $50. If you love museums and art, it will be worth it. They always have great exhibits.
Sherry Roth
I was visiting Nashville from Florida, and the Frist museum was one of the main attractions for me, specifically the Rina Banerjee exhibit. I was not disappointed. It always amazes and intrigues me when people can take ordinary objects and turn them into works of art. Light bulbs, feathers, masks, bits and pieces of all kinds of things. It helped that the pieces' titles, as well as explanations of their backgrounds and interpretations, were posted, to better understand Banerjee's starting place. Not everybody appreciates this kind of art, but those who do will come away with all kinds of ideas floating around in their heads.
Patrick Miller
The modern art exhibit they had in the museum when I visited was really cool!
The pictures had accompanying soundtracks you could listen to on Spotify that were composed by a local ambient music group in Nashville.
The staff were all very friendly and some of them were even quirky.
Everyone was friendly.
Modern art can be hit or miss, but this was for the most part, incredibly interesting.
Rite Lite Signs
A delightful museum with interesting galleries! We experienced “Paris in 1900” which was simply fantastic while extremely informative. I suggest the audio app and free headphones to really get into the exhibit!
Cam Cote
Nick Cave exhibition was brilliant. I’d certainly like to see more exhibitions from both students and professionals within the halls.
Scott sagar
Nice place to spend a few hours. Great old building and nice interactive exhibit on the 2nd level
Linda
Great museum! I was blown away how well put together it was. Also I visited in time for the tour which was courtesy of the museum! I visited many museums in Europe and Mexico. I was extremely happy to catch the Frida exhibit and wasn’t as packed luckily.
Daynise
The Frist is a beautiful museum with a delicious cafe and many interesting community events. The Murals of North Nashville is a definite favorite.
Pamela Tish
There for Frida Khalo, stayed for the architecture! This amazing art museum was once the Nashville, TN Post office. Not to be missed when visiting!
Rachel Rueff
I have loved this place for years. I've seen so many wonderful exhibits through the years. There is always something that sticks with me every time I go. This trip was special because a featured artist was someone we know and love from local public schools around the area. Once again I was in awe of what people with these kinds of talent are able to accomplish. Knowing many of their tender ages made it even more impressive. I'm very thankful for this bit of culture in our area and how hard it works to cultivate that love in the next generation. Don't miss the studios set up for the kids tti be creative.
Keewi Haller
Amazing museum! The building alone was worth the price of admission, and they had an exhibit of Paris at the end of the 19th century that was wonderful – lots of gorgeous art nouveau pieces. love here. Apparently there is no permanent collection at this museum. You won’t get bored! Now I am listening Bass+Banzo at the museum café.
The gift shop is great also. - got a book that you can’t find in Amazon, a cool 1000 pcs puzzle and some last Christmas presents.
Parking was easy and after spent over $50 at the gift shop, we got a free parking ticket.
Andrea Hauser
This us my second trip to Nashville and my second trip to the Frist. Well worth a visit every time. Oh, and this sculpture is badass.
Larry H
It's an old former USPS building that was updated & repurposed. Neat building. They have interesting exhibits that change reasonably often. They have a kids area with a lot of kid activities to enjoy.
Cheri Frencl
Was very interesting, looking back in time of my grandmother and my great grandmother. Will definitely be back!!
William Dickerson
Little over priced for a 2 floor museum with no permanent exhibits. Beautiful building and the exhibits that were present were very nice. On the whole, worthwhile stop.
Mystery Mama
This place is more than just fun. Amazing Frida kahlo exhibit and dint miss the second floor kids area.
Erika Caceres
Some exhibits were closed. If you're a college student you get a discount with your I.D. it was a very interactive art museum.
Sam Williams
Gosh I love this place. I've been here quite a few times and really enjoyed it. My favorite exhibit was the Van Gough exhibit. Since it was Van Gough, I saw a bunch of haystacks. I just love how the Frist family donated money to make this place actually get built. This is an actual must see.
Cory Kesty
Went to see Frida Kahlo and the surrealism exhibit. It was wonderful. Very clean and respectful environment. Even with lots of people. One of the "guards" had their arms in their shirt not in the sleeves, I'm sure she was freezing though. :) One of the guards was even Willing to give information about an exhibit. Wonderful experience, Will be returning.
Kristine Rosendahl
I flew in from West Palm Beach for the Picasso exhibition (Grand Opening today). Utterly phenomenal!
Justine Bursoni
Very small, but important museum to pop-in. Currently they are under transition in their galleries (only one gallery opened) and they offered half-off of admission prices. They had a beautiful photography exhibit on the Civil Rights Movement and a gorgeous exhibit of Nick Cave’s pieces.
Isabel English
Smaller exhibits but is quite affordable and has amazing service and accessible parking! It is also kid friendly and has a unique and beautiful architecture
Mygan Ashton
Always a pleasure to visit this museum! They feature traditional exhibits as well as modern art and change their offerings fairly often.
Karam Albanna
Great art museum
The staff was so nice, arts are great and the 2nd floor (drawing area) was amazing
One of the greatest Nashville place’s must visit
Aaron Monts
Only one exhibit was open the day I came. The Knights exhibit, however was remarkable. I wish I could have seen the paintings in the other exhibit hall.
Dave Denney
Great time with the grandkids - also the Asian weaving experience was amazing! Go! Enjoy!
Cary Christian
Will depend on the current exhibit but very well done and interesting.
CL Parks
So MUCH information and music. So much stuff, you have to see it for yourself, it's an experience and for a dollar more you get a sound track.
Trenton Moody (Lord Trentonian)
One of my favorite places in the world. Get a years pass for two people and a membership for $70. Exhibits change every few months or so.
Hailey Frazier
A slice of refined culture right in the heart of Nashville! As a native, sometimes I forget about the lovely gems we have, with all the new construction. I visited the Frida Kahlo exhibit and it was wonderful. The frist is always clean, friendly, and accommodating. A perfect afternoon activity!
Corey White
One of the best art museums in Nashville. I really like when they have the car exhibits.
Elizabeth Willett
Didn't love having to wear a mask, but we did it because we wanted to explore the Frist. My whole family enjoyed the current exhibition.
Have always loved this place & hoping this is the year we do a membership, I'd love to not feel rushed to see everything in a day.
Looking forward to the Cafe serving more substances items, since everything around is usually packed- it will be nice to take a break and grab a bite without having to plan ahead or leave the property.
Sonia Z
Perfect place to visit as a local or a tourist. Always has a cool rotating exhibit and it's small so you don't end up overwhelmed with too much museum. The upstairs has a great interactive area for children and adults alike.
Dale Long
Loving all things Art Deco, I couldn't pass this opportunity up. The exhibition did not disappoint! Plus we took the time to view a collection of 600 plus year old illuminated manuscripts-not too shabby for a Sunday afternoon! Just beware of the auto parking attendant. It refused to acknowledge its own ticket and cost a handsome extra fee!
Beth Péeva
Nice building but only 2 exhibits. Modern art downstairs was not to my taste. Enjoyed the knight exhibition on the upper floor.
Leon Lei
The Deep South turns out to be cultural! Our curator, a retired businessman, gave us detailed, emotional and sometimes funny talk into Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s life and artwork. Never felt tired in the 1.5 hours narration. Got much more than in Mexico City. Highly recommended to check out before the excellent exhibits finishing on Sep 2.
Tevis Denise
If you want to choose an incredible way to spend a few hours, you should visit the museum. The curators bring in rare exhibits as well as showings that are surprising and unusual. My family and I regard the Frist as a Nashville treasure.
Angie Deaton
Amazing museum with so many things to offer to visitants of all ages!
Hunter Lewis
Frist is a really solid art museum. We went when they had selections from the Miami museum of art, a Cuban artist exhibit, and exhibit for teachers from around Nashville and it was a great day. Perfect way to spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying some beautiful work.
Alison Pack
Good museum. Decent art pieces. Fun time if you go with the right people. Wouldn’t be my first place on a list of things to do in Nashville but wouldn’t be my last either.
peter covino
Amazing building, renovated post office. Great setting for museum. Current exhibit of Italian post war cars is great and not just for car buffs
John Paull
Great museum. Rotating exhibit, good value for the dollar with admission.
Rachel Tankersley
One of the most beautiful buildings I have ever set foot in. The architecture is wonderful. I went to the Frist for the Picasso exhibit and it did not disappoint. The museum and its staff were well-prepared to deal with a sold out crowd during a pandemic. Through-ways were clearly marked and getting into and out of the exhibit was efficient and well-planned. I will absolutely be back.
Andres Garcia
Art exhibition on the first floor and photography on the second. Very insightful.
Walter Stedronsky
A must visit, we saw 1900 Paris Fair and Do Ho Shu's presentation of his NYC Apartment. 3 D life size appliances made of see through material and fine wire with all the detail of inside plumbing mechanism.
Birdboy Blue
Great Atmosphere, and a good little spot upstairs for kids. Not a very large museum, but worth visiting. Thursday and Friday evenings are free if you show a student ID.
Kyle Hopper
Relatively small, but very well laid out museum featuring many contemporary works ranging from oil on canvas to abstract sculptures and immersive experience. Our visit featured exhibits from Alma Thomas and Cuban artists.
Very cool, and worth checking out if you're in the area for only $15.
Brent Sutterfield
Great place for kids and adults too! Had a blast with my daughter helping hwe to create her own works of art.
Jannette Parent
Exquisite displays, very nice docents, and fun gift shop. Whether you take advantage of the guided tours in person, or from the audio app, or decide to wander around aimlessly by yourself . What a bargain for the price of admission!
Christian Tena
This place had friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the Frida Kahlo/Diego Rovera exhibit was put together very well
moe miller
Very nice, enjoyed just walking around looking, they have tours but we just wanted to move along at our own pace, which your are more than welcome to do
Fancy Pants
Great place! Wish there were more paintings to see but I was so happy my favorite artists were there! The upstairs was fun for my son, just a bit crowded.
Sara
Beautiful exhibits, incredible staff. I always enjoy visiting the Frist center
Carl Street III
I love the building, maybe more than the exhibitions I saw. I went for the surrealists during war. I loved that but didn't find much of their permanent exhibit worth visiting..
Barbara Thompson
Loved the building. Beautiful Art Deco design and the history was fascinating
Was disappointed there was only one exhibit. The exhibit covered heavy material with some difficult images
It would have been good to be able to take a break with something less disturbing and come back to finish the exhibit. Next visit I hope to have more choice and variety in exhibits.
.
Lori Brawner
Having had back surgery 6 wks before this day. My grandson was chosen to have his drawing; representing Sam Houston Elementary School in Lebanon TN. Kindergarten and the only student to represent. If you haven't been; take a trip to see. The history of the Museum, the Art , Gift shop and more. This was a Blessed Day for my family. See something different every time.
Whisper Brock
A Nashvillian of 15+ years, we frequently visit the Frist. Today the Cobb salad at the Cafe was delicious. The Italian Automotive Renaissance exhibit was outstanding! A must do for all who visit Nashville, as well as the locals.
Christy Cox
Loved it! I had 3 kids with me 16, 11 and 8. They all loved it! Being able to make their own art after enjoying the museum was great!
Johnny Walker
Gorgeous works during my visit. Included exhibits of Art Deco style as well as an exhibit featuring medieval books and statues dating back to the 14th century. The building itself could be considered its own exhibit, set inside a restored post office. The staff was also very friendly and accommodating.
Tanisha McKoy
I enjoy going there and witnessing the different exhibits. I especially enjoy taking children so they can make personal gifts and learn different types of arts and crafts that have available to them.
Lauren Basham
I cried. So fascinating and the exhibits they bring are incredibly displayed. The interactive art space on the 2nd floor is so very fun for all ages from a wee babe to oldest of bones. History is truly captivated in the creativity of humanity. I would be a member if I were local to this gem. Will definitely be back as much as possible.
Paul Nicholson (pwnicholson)
Amazing architecture. Exhibits are hit or miss. Some are great, but some are duds. Worth having a membership for the 3-4 good ones that come through every year, plus the kids area is a good rainy day spot for the kids. Parking is a pain though, especially if you're unlucky enough to come when they're having a board meeting. They basically close down the parking lot to the public for those.
tay gudmundson
Beautiful art deco building that is as much a piece of art as what they have in the galleries. Loved my visit here
Scott Dohrmann
The Impressionist exhibit is very good and a great value, especially considering those under 18 get in free. Don't miss it!
Brewski
Bathrooms aren't touchless. Hand sanitizers were empty most of the time
Nathanael Reveal
Came to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit. Also spent time in the new ArtQuest space upstairs. Great exhibit. Plenty of strategically placed benches to sit and enjoy the major pieces. (Photo: The Love Embrace of the Universe, the Earth (Mexico), Myself, Diego, and Señor Xolotl)
Zulema Marín
Very small museum. Current exhibitions were not impresive.
farzod darzi
The exhibition I visited was a collection of photos, capturing the chaos and sorrow in poeple faces at time of WW. Forced relocation of Japanese decent in WW2. There are some creative spaces to express yourself artistically. A great place for a date since there is a cafe at the entrance.
Bob
The building itself is an absolute gem; it’s a historic Art Deco building that is stunning to look at. They only had a few exhibits, but it’s definitely worth a visit! And it’s free for those under 18; students and vets also get discounts. The current exhibit is loaned from the Denver Art Museum and it has a lot of Native American and Western themed art, and there’s also an exhibit about architecture.
Brett Black
Nice museum, super friendly staff at audio tour desk.
Alexis Bennett
They change exhibits every couple of months and each time the artwork is beautiful
artz folk
It was very clean and nice to get out of Nashville’s heat for a minute and walk around the gallery. It’s quiet and a nice place to reflect.
Gourmand
This is a great museum that does not get boring, since this museum has seasonal exhibitions of different works of art from around the world. Be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time, as popular exhibits with famous artists can sell our well in advance.
Gregory Yuh
Having visited some of the larger art museums, I was a but disappointed with the size and quality of the collection. Some interesting pieces but what I enjoyed the most were art work from local schools... some belonged inside the exhibit.
Marcia Butler
Great exhibits. Great children's creative space. Kids are always free!
Kevin Gardner
Phenomenal experience! Went during the Picasso Figures exhibit and the staff were incredibly accommodating and attentive. The exhibit itself was spacious and well laid out, and the history is the building itself is fascinating. Oddly enough I couldn't get over how the floor is made of pieces of 2x4s stacked together upright! So incredibly cool!
Dark Seraphim
Great museum and entry was free on Easter Sunday.
Myia Brown
The Native American exhibit, "Hearts of Our People, Native Women Artists" was spectacular! It's open until Jan. 12th 2020, definitely check it out!
Ashley Wiley
one of my favorite museums. rotating exhibits so it’s always something new to see, i’ve been to the picasso exhibit and the art deco exhibit here both were great. plus the building the museum is in is gorgeous and historic
Jocelyn
The staff is friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibit and other exhibits on the other floors.
Isobelle Keywood
Beautiful building and really friendly staff. Worth visiting !
Diane Sykes-Early
The admission price might put attendance at this exhibit outside of most families' budget, which is really too bad. This Picasso Exhibit is carefully curated and a real gem. The Art Deco building itself is also an architectural wonder, and makes you feel like you're trespassing in Paris for an afternoon. I Loved the whole experience.
The biggest surprise are the other exhibits, actually. For me, they make the entire experience feel like a steal and more than compensates for the admission price. There's an exceptional Children's Area with a variety of activities including a life size Light Bright game. There's an additional fee to access and use this area.
The gift shop was also a pleasure. There's a ton of treasures from which to choose. Enter with a good idea of who you are shopping for as there's a little something for everyone there and many choices. Prices are on par with most museum gift shops, so a bit pricey. Come prepared. There are several smaller souvenir items and beautiful cards if money is a consideration. The Museum has obviously considered family outings and that matters to this mom of four.
There was no cafe services on my visit, only vending machine options. The exhibit is C-ovid sensitive and handicapped accessible. There is parking. Public parking nearby is available too, but NOT secure.
annmarie thomson
Absolutely fantastic! Great show, an interactive children's center which was absolutely fantastic... really for all ages and a fun shop. Building itself is an archaeological gem... Truly wonderful ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Robert Forrester
We saw the Picasso exhibit at the Frisk and loved it.

It was interesting but lacking a little. I was surprised there wasn't more art.

I always want to be honest in my critique about wherever I go, so others aren't deceived by people's flowery dishonest reviews as guides. That being said, the Frist museum's actual building is beautiful, and it is in the old Post Office. I love that they saved a Historic place! Don't just show up without looking online to see what exhibits are being shown, as you may end up having a negative experience, if you don't like that specific style of art. They have an area you can bring kids to learn and play. Elevators are available for the disabled. The food is top notch, ESPECIALLY the tuna melt!! The gift shop use to be better with a lot of pottery, and more blown glass, not just knickknack kids souvenirs or shirts. Maybe they rotate it, but if so, they should always keep local potter's, and glass artisan's work available, for adult collectors that want a diverse offering of work that can be passed down over time in collections. I think they should offer a balance of current and historic religious art, all cultures/races/ethnicities, and not just spend excessive time in one. I love Russia's Historic religious art and History, for example. Parking is around back, and if I remember correctly, it is pay parking. They may stamp it though, I can't recall. Overall, it's a great museum of art. Would like to see more ADVANCED pottery, sculpture, and glass mixed in, not just kid's or HORRIBLE work that ANYBODY could throw together. Check for Covid rules BEFORE YOU GO. RESPECT OTHERS BY OBEYING WHATEVER RULES ARE IN PLACE FOR SAFETY. DON'T THROW TRASH DOWN OR MASKS! GREAT PLACE TO VISIT.
Mike Marples
One of my favorite places to visit in Nashville. Be sure to check the calendar throughout the year as the galleries change, but regardless of what is being featured any time spent here is enjoyable.
María Fernanda Martínez
Nice experience now that they are exhibiting art deco! Although it was a little difficult to know where to go.
Everything is well illuminated, clean. Staff is nice.
You have to paste a sticker on your clothes after you pay, so just make sure it doesn't fall.
Mara Cabrera
The mood and service was wonderful, very affordable price. Eighteen and under go in for free which is great being a parent. The exhibition itself was interesting, minus one star because of how many security guards there were watching you, you just felt uncomfortable and with their gazes all over you it felt like they were following you. Besides that it was a great time, they had an interactive craft station in the second floor which was very fun for the kids and even us as parents we got to enjoy it as well.
Casey Neill
I come to the Frist at least every 2 years and wish it was more. The Art Deco was great and Sibande's work is incredible and awe inspiring. Everyone who can get down there while these are showing definitely should!!
Kenny Tao
Rotating exhibits near downtown Nashville. Has student and member discounts. On-site paid parking available in back.
Matt Ramsey
Beautiful building. The two exhibits were nice - but it did not take long to tour. The kids area made the day great for my family.
A Farrar
Alot of fun looking at the artwork currently at the exhibit! As an artist, its refreshing to see all kinds of artistic expressions!
Tarannum Lakdawala (Tara)
Really cool art museum in Nashville. They had a couple exhibits when we went but my favorite was seeing the work people do in their studios. Highly recommend for anyone looking to spend a nice relaxed afternoon away from Broadway
Paul Joiner
Always a great time at the Frist. So thankful to have a quality art museum in Nashville. We were just there for the Picasso exhibit. This is one of the few stops in the United States for this exhibit. It was very well done.
Rosemarie Misciagno
Beautiful architecture and the art in the galleries were very unique.
Brianna Lewis
Wonderful exhibit chronicaling desegregation of Nashville schools and other happenings during the '60's. It's currently free!
Brian Hawkins
Saw the Picassso exhibit. It was amazing!!
Sully
A great museum for Music City. The 2010 Nashville flood exhibit is a must see as we remember how devastating those early May days were 10 years ago.
Stephanie Barrow
Paris 1900 exhibit was very nice- thouroughly enjoyed it.
Luis Guillermo Garcia Marcano
Great Place to learn and share with your family
Jerry Soer
Amazing art museum with an excellent kids section. Must try if you have kids!
Allan Gruen
Renovation of old post office. Beautiful architecture and nice exhibition of two artists in lower galleries. Galleries on 2nd floor and activity center for kids as well as story time. Sign up for time when entering the museum so you can lessen or eliminate your wait. Lots of steps but elevator access for disabilities. Something for everyone. Macintosh exhibit extensive. Changes after a period of time. Check with website.
Robert Scholz (Bob)
The Picasso exhibit is on tour from Italy real Picasso's until May, there are at least three other exhibits here. I saw the N2020, some dioramas from an Argentinian artist, and a collection of art from the American West both native and cowboy. It was a full wonderful enriching day. Buy your tickets when you can I actually had to wait 2 weeks for my appointment because there is a limit to how many people can be in the gallery.
Carol Edmiston
WENT TO SEE THE ARMOR THAT WAS TOURING IN NASNVILLE, TN.
VERY IMPRESSIVE. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVER TOURS OF MUMMYS, CARS AND OTHER THINGS ALWAYS PRESEBTED IN A PROFESSIONAL WAY. SECURITY WAS ALSO QUITE PROFESSIONAL.
MILITARY PERSONAL, VETERANS WERE ALLOWED TO TOUR WITH OUR CHARGE THE DAY WE WENT THE FRIST WAS HONORING GOLD STAR FAMILYS.
Brooke Borchardt
Great exhibit, nice staff, and beautiful architecture!
tim crowder
Bravo!! Was there for the Picasso exhibit and wknd in Nashville. Incredible place. An exquisite example of art deco design. Thank goodness Nashville saved it's old post office and transformed it into a true gem of a visual arts museum with world class works of art. Fantastic experience!!!
Seamus Carey
Amazing collection 👌 Degas, Monet, Picasso, it was exquisitely Scrunted …
Lori Trichel
Stunning Architecture!
Joey Keenan
There is a lot to discover at this museum. The exhibits change every 2 months or so, which makes it more likely for people to return.
Jim Blumenschein
The exhibit was less than expected. I would like to see some classical art. One of the contemporary exhibits was not worthy of a place in the museum. Just because the work of an artist is in a museum doesn't mean it is good.
Scott Kathary
Excellent place for Children ages 2-5 maybe 6... I went during the Eric Carl exhibit which was geared towards kids to begin with. However that was not the best part. The activity center for kids was excellent. They had art activities, camera and motion stuff. My daughter had a blast and the staff was very friendly. We will be returning. I will admit we have not attended during an exhibit geared towards adults but I look forward to doing so.
Joseph James
I have been there twice, mostly for my kid's school trips, bit I have been impressed everytime I come. They have some of the world's foremost artists, sculptors and painters all showing their craft. Recently we all enjoyed the picasso exhibit and it was amazing to see his work in person.
While there we shot up to the "Western Art" exhibit that showcased art from the days of the wild west. Paintings that showed the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains and the intimate personalities of our Native Americans. Each painting brought you to that moment in time.
Overall, if you love art, history and a little bit of quiet (parents I'm talking to you), then you will definitely love this place. Thanks.
Sarah Siegel
Enjoyed the Art Deco features of the museum building itself along with the biggest and most various Art Deco exhibit I've ever seen (including one in Toronto and another in Boston).
Brandon Lino
Very beautiful art. I highly recommend going to see the wonderful exhibits they show.
ThePsychoMailman ThatStoleMyBody
Super great Museum I've been going to since I was little, Tourists be warned though, exhibits are all temporary so if there's something you'd like to see it's better to go ahead and visit before it's gone.
Ana ve
It's a small museum with a lot to offer. Quality expositions and good prices. Definitely worth it.
Asma Hassan
Very small art museum, but nice nonetheless. Went here on a school field trip and thoroughly enjoyed.
Upstairs they have an entire interactive kids area with different stations set up for kids to do fun art activities. My daughter, age 5, who loves art, really loved this section. They had everything from stamping to stenciling to videography and free drawing, water color painting and more.
Awesome for kids on a rainy day .
David Brewer
Still a great art museum. We go every chance we get.
Jacob Bell
Fantastic art exhibit! Although a little small, the pieces are wondrous to inspect, and the interactive portions are incredibly fun!
Remember to ask the front desk about parking discounts, as you'll get cheaper museum parking than if you're just going to the mail center of the building.
Jonathan Neal
To be honest, the place could be much bigger. But that has more to do with the really well made exhibits. I've been to a few of their exhibitions now and I can say that it is worth going to because they are well coordinated and thoughtfully curated. They use the digital aids kinda sparsely; like the touch screens, but they do it to a point and its apparent when you experience it.
Ric Rini
I was totally impressed by this museum from the exterior architecture to the interior. It's a fabulous structure to admire, balance and symmetry throughout. The visiting exhibit was Nick Cage, and I found the exhibit to be visually stunning, like nothing I've ever seen before. They had a fun interpretive area that actually was very entertaining, even though it is designed for children.
Expect to be here 2+/- hours.
They also honor AAA discounts which was a nice addition.
Gina Humphries
Absolutely a must see and a great addition to the community. My only word of advice to families: leave young kids at home. I wish they would be transparent and just say young kids are not welcome. I’ve been taking my kids at least once a year since my ten year old was a toddler. She was always well behaved and contained in a stroller until old enough to follow the rules but, there’s always one volunteer who follows around the families with young children and it’s completely unnerving. This time I have a one year old and we attempt to social distance. Having Molly follow us around about two feet from my back looking for a reason to get on to us was unsettling at best. I fully admit this fourth child is a handful lol but...come on. My two teenagers even took notice that while I was out giving the baby a bottle (that she couldn’t even have at a proper distance, again, strapped into a stroller, I get many many rules must be made to keep these priceless works safe but children under 1 (mines right at one) strapped down to a stroller or carried attached to the mother like another 8 month old was should pose no threat. Anyway, my teens even took note that they seem to coordinate and have volunteers follow families with babies because two other families with infants had an employee walking behind them for several minutes monitoring them. This was always my experience. Like I said, my older child they never even had an issue with and we were constantly followed “just reminding you they have to be behind the line” me:”oh sorry but we are several feet behind to be sure she stays. Is there an issue?” “No, just reminding you” was common place/ I can’t say enough good about what they add to the community but I do wish they would set a minimum age or instruct volunteers to not harass families with young children, obviously if a rules broken say something but my teens were left saying “this is why art is dying. They don’t want the younger generation interested. We didn’t break any rules they just didn’t want her there”. That’s exactly what I’m trying to avoid them thinking
Mary McGrady
We had a great time today viewing the Picasso exhibit. All the museum staff were very friendly. We also felt very comfortable since temperatures were checked at the door and masks were required.
Dessa Hix
The building has been remodeled from its previous life as the Post Office and its Art Deco beauty still shines. The exhibits change regularly and I'll be returning soon. The Art of the American West in the upstairs gallery was stunning!
Kendell Ragsdale
I had a wonderful time here. All three exhibits were beautiful. The line didn't take long to get my tickets and everyone was very courteous.
Cynthia Hale
Beautiful art deco post office converted into world class museum. What's not to love? We have been going since it opened and have seen many fabulous shows. The museum is kid friendly. Art Quest is fun for all ages. The gift shop has lovely items. Even the cafe is okay.
Drew Morris
The Art Deco exhibit is great, but a shame that it’s temporary! Fits so well with the building itself. Wished there were more exhibits on display in general.
chad gates
Beautiful museum. Worth the time and visit
Papasbitty Girl (Leelee)
It is so fun. On the second floor there is stuff that you can do.
Drew Gilpin
It's a nice, smallish contemporary arts museum, very nice kids area with print making etc..
Shira Shika
Lovely small art museum. Galleries vibe
Kelly Gentsch
Went when they only had the marriage chest exhibit, so entrance was discounted to $10. In my opinion, totally worth it. Coat check was available if you didn't want to drag your around, the whole place was clean and all labels were easy to read. The exhibit was interesting as well, and while I didn't explore it, there was an area for kids as well. The lighting was a little sparse in places but it wasn't a big deal, I assume it's lit like that to protect the art.
Jama Smith
What a beautiful art museum! The architecture in this building is gorgeous. The exhibits were interesting and timely. My daughter and I truly enjoyed being here. And the ladies bathroom was very uniquely designed. I really appreciated this visit. 😀😀😀 …
TT FW
It is a great place for art lovers. My kinds enjoyed there by painting, sketching, Animation and so on.
PAUL RITZ
Excellent art museum for a few hours visit. Easily managed without getting art overload. Nice rotating exhibits. We saw an extensive exhibit on Eric Carle, author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Worthy of a visit when you are in Nashville. Interesting building that was once a post office.
Bree McElroy
This place is definitely unique. The building in of its self is incredible. Visited during a day trip to Nashville, so it wasn't very crowded. The samurai exhibit was really stunning and well thought out, being able to see the things that were apart of their daily lives and all. Also, I absolutely love the idea of the rotating exhibits they do here. I would definitely recommend taking the kids here, too. The upstairs kids area has all kinds of really wonderful things to keep little minds thinking.
Becka Lang
Beautiful building and I love the less than subtle anti fascist theme at the moment.
Leighanne Chiupka
It's so affordable for a rainy day trip absolutely beautiful and great employees
Darla J
Wonderful experience for us. Excellent displays, friendly, helpful staff, convenient parking, good food in the cafe. Loved it.
Nikki Key
Great place we love. Fun and lots of activities
Isabel Schmieta
A lot smaller than expected and than your typical art museum, but it has quite interesting exhibitions. They’re constantly rotating and they don’t seem to have a permanent one. Definitely a unique experience.
Hoel Junior
The Frist Art Museum definitely fulfills your expectations! It is an incredibly fun building to explore, inside and out. Walking around it shows you truly how massive it is and all the detail on the outside that they had to model. Going inside to the art gallery and to see the statues, you must go to the east side lower level.
Kriz Rogers
Frist cares about the details and their exhibits are well planned, which guarantees captivating experiences.
Even the building itself is an artifact, since it is a historic, former post office. That makes for a great architectural exploration as well, but it also makes it a little bit harder to get around on the second floor. All together, well worth a visit. Their food and staff are great too!
Mitchel Anger
A must do in any situation, out with kids, for a date or just need to do something. Lots to do and see.
Adam Runnels (A-Run)
My family and I enjoy the variety of exhibits they have here. There is a fairly regular rotation of exhibits and small, ancillary rooms for modern art pieces. We particularly enjoys the Impressionist exhibit. Upstairs there is an interactive art room for children (and adults too).
O Miranda
Enjoyed Free Museum Day! They have parking for a discounted price which makes it convenient
When it's not free admission for 18 and under is free and adults is no more than 20. They have a children's section and although the exhibit was small. I enjoyed it.
I reality I'm in love with the building. The history the architecture. Just ahh!
Anna Otis
I enjoy going to different exhibits here. I like the multiple levels.
Penmom 3
Very nice museum. Absolutely for teens and adults. My 10 year old not impressed. We had a great time and employees were very friendly. I loved how they had the authors descriptions beside the paintings that helped with the enjoyment of the museum because I understood what the pieces meant. It was pricey too it was $81. I received a dollar off for having a college student with me. It also charges $2 an hour for parking as long as you get the validation from lady when you pay for your ticket.
Ashli Allen
A nice art museum centrally located with great exhibits.
Mallory Miller
Extremely clean and well functioning for the current situation. Beautiful, thought provoking exhibits from an array of topics. Although not all exhibits are currently open there is still plenty to see and take in. Definitely recommend for a safe, enjoyable activity.
Moriah Bender
Fun kids section
Daniel “Keith” Boyce
Without a doubt my favorite building in Nashville. It was built as a United States post office during the great depression and the architecture is phenomenal.
Brooke Powell
A great place to experience art - well curated and frequently fun and/or topical. My all time favorite was the animation exhibit. If you’re visiting Nashville- go. If you’re local- go. The building itself is lovely and I’ve heard the architecture tour is fantastic.
Teresa Chung
Very small, it only had one exhibit but worth the price with lots of fun activities after
Stefanie Delinois
Their kids art section upstairs is fantastic. Probably better for 5 and up but younger kids can enjoy too. Peaceful and calming space. If your child loves to create, this is were you should take them. Year membership is a great deal too.
Hsrah
We have enjoyed the Frist Art Museum several times and this visit was just as great. We loved the Eric Carle exhibit very much, along with the Native Indian Women art exhibit. The museum itself used to be the Nashville post office. We have enjoyed each exhibit we have encountered there. There is a pay-lot for parking. If you are traveling to Nashville be sure to make time for this museum.
Alison Weiss
Beautiful museum with a lovely cafe and gift shop. The museum offers a retrospective of a highlighted artist so you really get to appreciate and learn about the artist and their work. If you are looking for a place to see a wide variety of artists, this is not that kind of museum. There is discounted parking so learn about someone new, enjoy a meal or snack and plan to have a great afternoon.
sweetdd1
Wonderful!! My daughter and I had a great day filled with Eric Carle!
Eric Malin
A wonderful host for art galleries of different kinds.
S Van
The Frist is lovely, and if you are a student they have free student nights! I went for the second time and they had all new art exhibitions which were really spectacular. The new MapQuest center was fun too and open to all ages, so I made my own little piece of art even though I initially thought I was a bit too old for it. The cafe is tasty but a bit overpriced as all museum restaurants tend to be--the lemon cake was really delicious though. Will be visiting very often!
RETLAW26
Went to see the Alma Thoma exhibit after missing it in D.C. Bravo to the Frizt Center for bringing such an exceptional exhibit to Nashville.
Reverend Muffington
A Cool place to wander around... high.... or bring your family... Either way.
Phil Ollenberg
I liked this museum and its fine choice of contemporary art. Although it was a little small, the space was well-used. The employee who first greeted me was very welcoming and that made the experience that much better as a weary tourist!
Caitlin Jo Ramsey
Their special exhibits are nice but the permanent collection is very sparse. Nothing like the St. Louis art museum or those if other cities of a comparable size, so set your expetations accordingly and you will have an enjoyable experience. The architecture of the building is really cool and worth seeing if you've never been there before.
Vivian Katz
Wonderful, small museum with excellent exhibits. I was there to see a Friedo Kahlo exhibit and it was well worth the time. Also there was a very nice exhibit on surrealism. The entrance fees are very reasonable also. Nice maker space to explore your inner artist that many adults and all kids would love.
Leana Miller
I LOVED going to the Frist Art Museum today! I brought my six year old brother so we were in the Martin ArtQuest Gallery the entire two hours we were there. The gallery is extremely interactive and he didn’t express any boredom. My favorite part about the gallery was the station for exploring moving images. Another great thing about the Frist Art Museum is that they offer military ($7) and college student discounts ($9), every person 18 years of age and younger are FREE. Parking was not pricey either, $2 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour.
Big Papa Stroh
A true gem of the city, this place is exquisite. Packed with an abundance of art history, one visit isn't enough to take it all in. With several affordable options for memberships it's definitely a must have for local residence and travelers alike. Looking forward to bringing the whole family back, again and again.
The staff was courteous and friendly. The accommodations seemed just right for any group of visitors.
Naser Altameemi
Wonderful museums and great place to spend the day with family, friends.
Jennifer Poole
High price for admission, but not a lot to look at overall considering. The exhibits were interesting nonetheless. I would go again if there was an intriguing exhibit but I wouldn't rank it in my favorites.
Aaron
Overall, the Frist is okay. I come from Raleigh NC which has a HUGE and very diverse art museum, so I was really shocked to basically only see a handful of exhibit rooms. The art was almost explicitly just English and French oil on canvas, with a very tiny room in the back for modern art. I’d say this venue is more for a person in love with historical art. Parking was a pain, and I suggest you get there early to avoid a huge line.
Jessica Dean
Have been visiting the Frist since I was a kid. I learned the many forms of art as well as how to appreciate art for all that it is and comes from. I have started taking my oldest child to see exhibits and she thoroughly enjoyed it. She loves the hands on area also. Always a great day spent at the Frist alone or with kids.
Diane Jones
We love visiting the Frist, but I do have a daughter attending the Watkins College of Art at Belmont. We love art!
Elise Moore
Don't miss the cafe after visiting the fine exhibits. Hidden in the back of the building overlooking a pleasant courtyard with outdoor tables as well as indoor space, the food is excellent and fairly priced. The half chicken salad sandwich on croissant roll is delicious. Homemade chips or a yummy salad come with. The fruit tea is a local treat and the desserts are amazing. The exhibits change regularly. The building itself is delightful art deco and the museum shop provides special gifts some made by local artisans.
Wendy Gupton
Bought tickets for the Picasso exhibit. They were selling them in timed increments due to COVID. I can respect that, but once we got there, I do not think that there was anything different. Ot was all a show to appear in compliance. People were all on top of each other looking at the exhibit. Absolutely no social distancing. Was disappointed in the amout of people there in at once. I don't care if you have been fully vaccinated or not please respect others personal space. Again very disappointed but loved seeing the Picasso exhibit!
Nathan Fields
A membership to the Frist is an excellent birthday/anniversary/Valentines gift. Students under 18 are free and graduate students or university students or teachers get discounted rates to purchase the membership. The Frist has attractive and intriguing travelling galleries that come through seasonally, so there's almost always something new happening every few months. While there's displays and art exhibits that come and go, you'll always be treated with kindness by the staff and you'll be sure to find something intriguing in the exhibits. Last fall, they had an exhibit from the British Museum featuring Rome, and my wife and I went on three different dates to visit and explore for about an hour-hour and a half each time and we never completed seeing all they had in that exhibit. I also have taken my kids on the weekends to do some art in the children's section. I'm always grateful for the artists they have who work with the kids. Very grateful for the Frist and what they bring to our Nashville community!
klinkerpopper
We have been several times over 5 years and the family always enjoys the visit.
The kids art center is the carrot I dangle to my kids (now 10 &12) so they will agree to visit. The art exhibits have never failed to draw them in and explore and enjoy before remembering that they came for the kids center.
The renovated kid center still has their favorites (print making, stop motion video making, painting, and drawing stations). In addition they have added a changing color wall, color with your shadow, and several other new favorites.
The Frist Center is still a Nashville must go!
Natalia Allen
This is a very small museum, but it’s worth the admission price (and even better when you get the entrance with the Country Music Hall of Fame ticket). The Frida exhibit is excellent, and the monsters and myth is also very good. The cafeteria is so lovely to sit at and they have pretty good snacks.
dawn baxter
The art deco building was beautiful. Free coat check and free wheel chair rental (yes we had to use it) was even better! The exhibit.... not so great, and super small for the price we paid.
E Schwartz
The Picasso exhibit was great. Everyone was friendly.
Heather Brady
The Van Gogh exhibit here was amazing. We attended on a Thursday night for student night and arrived just in time for an exhibit talk! The talk was very educational but also fun and interactive. After our tour, we perused into the cafe to listen in on a smooth jazz band
Moriah Anderson
The exhibit was good as usual. Going during the week is the best time. We ended up getting a mini tour from one of the security guards who had met several of the artist. Plan to spend 3 to 4 hours to actually see and ponder everything. Great indoor activity on a hot day.
E H
I have not been to the Frist since I was a child. Visiting today was amazing. The exhibits, the staff, gift shop, everything was just great. Do yourself a favor and visit the Kids Take the Frist exhibit.
val c
Whoever thought of turning a post office into a museum is brilliant. You have 2 stories of art to explore, a gift shop, and a cafe. Parking is right across the street and they do validate. The staff is very friendly and always so helpful. There's not a whole lot to do during the day in Nashville so be sure to put this museum on your list.
Elizabeth Green
What a gem! My first visit and it definitely won't be my last. Loved the exhibit. The restored building is the perfect spot for this museum. Take the time and stop by. You'll be glad you did!
Eric Young
The exhibit on hand doesn't compare to other major museums, but what they have is done so well. And the events at the museum are beyond what I expected. I'm so glad I just stopped by and had an amazing experience. Well worth the effort.
Steven Elliott
Well curated shows- Good reasonably priced food in the Cafe- Beautiful building
Libby Baughman
Always a wonderful experience. Today we were treated with murals of north Nashville and a docent. Lunch in the cafe was a treat. I went for the sweet potato salad since it was the first day of fall. It was reaaally good. Good quality whole foods at decent prices.
Tom McCulloch
I usually go about once a year. I have been to museums all over the world and the Frist is way up there. They have the best hands on (for children) experience of any museum I have been to. When I only give the Frist 4 Stars, I am comparing it to the Louvre and the Huntington Library. Top notch.
lemondrop charms
The Frist has a lovely cafe with wonderful staff and the interactive exhibits for children and adults on the second floor are superb. The art exhibits were fantastic as well. The reasonable price of the museum also allows for any budget. However, the lack of parking, the lurking security making for an uncomfortable viewing experience, and the lack of customer service in areas of the museum keep the rating from being much higher.
Paul Tobias
Loved it so much. Great gift shop.
Sam Veremchuk
Great regional museum with temporary exhibits. Awesome space.
Christian Rodriguez
Great cultural center. Brings in a diverse selection of exhibits and the building itself is interesting to explore. Staff has always been friendly and last I visited, they had live music on Thursdays in the cafe part of the building. Highly recommend for a nice evening out.
Geraldine Vahey
Very nice museum. They have a lot of security guards, who are not very friendly. I smiled at three of them and they just stood there. Then to enter the one section two of them were standing together talking in the doorway and you literally had to squeeze past them, to the point where I thought the area was closed and I was sneaking in. Other than that, it’s a very nice place. Parking was easy to find, and you get a discount when you buy your tickets. The gift shop is really nice and the workers there are super friendly and helpful. Would get a membership if we lived closer.
Bethany Hallas
Went to see the pablo picasso exibit and was not disappointed! I looked at all the other art they had their and enjoyed that too. Also the building architecture is amazing and so inspiring. The one drawback to the place was the huge amount of biased, personal, and factually inaccurate descriptions for many of the paintings (not the picasso). It was very misleading and I hope that they will adress this issue and strive to make the descriptions more fact and not opinion or theory based.
Chandler Ross
The exhibits this location draws in is pretty incredible. The building is chic in an art deco sort of vibe. I did the Italian car exhibit which was a smashing success and then the samurai exhibit which was educational. Also don't skip the upstairs as they have some more eccentric displays tucked away. I normally avoid gift shops but this one is EXTREMELY well run and has perfect memorabilia themed for each exhibit.
Elaine Friesen
Great museum. Small but wonderful rotating exhibits. Love the interactive art space- it's not just for kids!
Dustin Win
Came during one of the free days. I really like the historic look of the building, you could tell they gutted a post office and really did a good job of putting a unique look to it. The art was lesser known but arranged well and easy vantage points. Would come back again for new exhibits.
Jessica Bach
Lovely place but seemed a short experience because there was just one exhibit. Would love to go back when there was more. Friendly staff and cute little cafe inside with an outside patio area. Check out the Flying Saucer pub right behind the museum on your way out though!! Super cool place! The Frist will validate some of the cost of parking if you are in the correct parking lot but be advised... The lot that is behind the Flying Saucer is pricey! We paid $15 to park and were in and out of both places in 2 hours or less.
Danielle Quinn
Amazing interactive exhibits for kids on top floor. Top notch painting, drawing, reading nooks, hands on exploration--great! The Eric Carle exhibit is wonderful.
Also a wonderful historic building in its own right -- the Frist is in the old 1930s Art Deco Nashville Post Office. Wonderful Art Deco characters throughout the lobby and Art Deco features (lights, transom windows, marble floors and walls, etc.). Truly an Art Deco gem!
Rebecca Miller
I took my students on a field trip here. The building has a fun history and is very cool to see the old style post office. The museum it self has changing exsibits and are always fun. The kids zone is great to have some hands on art and they get to create their own.
Carla Auchterlonie
Picasso exhibit is really good! The museum staff are friendly and helpful. And there are online talks to give perspective on the works before you go.
Michael Tumblin
Awesome museum, beautiful space, quality exhibits. Highly recommended!!! Parking is free w admission to the museum.
Amy Kammerman
This is a great museum of rotating exhibits meaning there is no permanent collection and every visit can be different. The building is art deco, a former post office and worth a look by itself. Lovely exhibits, creative gift shop and a tasty cafe round out a must do in Nashville. We visit for every new exhibit.
T G
This is a very small museum but the quality of the exhibits are great. I enjoy the member times, which reduces the number of people in the galleries. I also really appreciate the diversity of all the exhibits.
Brian Fritz
The Museum is great! Really beautiful exhibits and architecture! The interactive section upstairs is fun for all ages. Parking is expensive if you don't get one of the discount tickets from the tickets counter at the museum.
Venu Arunajatesan
Great place to come with kids. They have rotating art exhibits that are unique and thought provoking. They also have a kids art play area where my daughter can easily spend an hour or two. In case you get hungry they also have a cafeteria which is moderately priced
Michael Ketzner
This museum was really cool. I loved the Power of Pictures exhibit. It explored the relationship between art and politics, revisiting a point in history when artists were a primary engine of social change.
Unfortunately that was the only exhibit open (as of May 8th), but tickets were half off. Also, anyone 18 years and under is completely free!

I enjoyed my walk around the exhibits. This museum is very small, but I feel it's priced accordingly. Very well laid out and beautiful works of art. I like that they rotate exhibits every 90 days.

The lighting was incredibly dim making the inside look unwelcoming or even closed. I think that even though it is important to have a space for children the space is so big that it takes away valuable space for other exhibits. The gift shop is more focused on little items rather than art books like other museums. The exhibit was more of a biography rather than an exhibit of the works of the artist. I could have seen all that info by opening a page of the artist online. I wanted to see the artworks. Another of the exhibits in the back seemed more of an afterthought since it was crammed in a small room in the back. The cafe is so dark as well, it could use fresh new and brighter colors. The information desk at one of the doors seems kind of useless since it simply directs you to the visitor center. Why not sell tickets there too? There were a total of four infor.ation desks within eye reach of each other.

The Art Deco event was fabulous!!! Great venue for an amazing night out with friends!!!

My family & I visited on a Thursday at dinner time. It was great timing for us since my 2-year old was noisy & wanted to move around and there weren't many people at that time. Upstairs we spent the most time in the children's part where we drew pictures, painted watercolors, created an animated video, & made puppets. It was a great way for our family all to enjoy exploring the arts.

We visited the Frist for the Van Gogh, Monet, Degas exhibit. It was free for college students on Friday. We definitely enjoyed being there. The museum is clean incl. the bathrooms, has parking space and coat check.

Small museum with no permanent collection so your experience weighs heavily on what the current exhibit is. Cafe is fantastic, chicken salad with homemade potato chips is my fav. Great gift ship with wide variety. The building itself is impressive and beautiful being a historic 1920s art deco post office originally.

Bottom floor exhibit is something pretty different than what I was expecting for art but is art none the less. The top floor however is something incredible, art from history that makes a faithless person think twice about the powers of Gods influence.

I visited here with my 3 year old son and we had a fantastic time! I took him to Artquest on the top floor which is an interactive art studio for both children and adults. We painted, drew pictures, designed using shapes, built towers and houses, watched videos, and drew on a double sided window. It is very clean and well maintained, the staff was so helpful and attentive to us, and the cafe had great food. All it took is a single visit to convince me to get a membership for our family!

Picasso exhibit was awesome. They had people everywhere guiding you throughout the building. They were very nice and helpful. I love going to the Frist Center.

Beautiful museum and really enjoyed the large special exhibit of Monet, Van Gogh, Degas which had many wonderful pieces. It seems like this museum has more space for rotating exhibitions than permanent pieces, so just don’t except a deep collection going in. For what they do it is excellent, though.

Great learning experience

What a great art museum! Their admission isn't excessive, especially for residents with membership. The building is the old post office, and it's beautiful. They have many rotating exhibits. The second floor has a nice kids area and the staff are quite helpful in answering curious patrons.

We visited on girl scout day this past Saturday. It had nice activities for the girl scouts to do to earn patches and a 'different' type of art than I am used to seeing. Not a large quantity of available art in my opinion. Overall our scouts enjoyed themselves. Parking is not bad for Nashville. Would return for another event.

This is easily the best museum in Nashville. Last Friday I attended the Frist Friday event, which is a concert series that the museum runs for part of the summer from 6-9pm every Friday. The music was phenomenal, they had drinks and food, and for $12 you were able to listen to the show and walk the museum. I ended up spending an hour listening, and another hour wandering their exhibits. Right now they have a superb contemporary American exhibit, that engages you with so many different mediums and messages. Easily one of the best $12 I've spent in a long long time.

We enjoyed our visit, even though early 19th Century France wasn't the most stimulating of subjectmatter at the time. I liked the architecture of the museum better than the current exhibit. My wife commented that the gift shop was the best in Nashville.

Wonderful museum. The exhibitions are always beautifully done and so interesting. We’re really lucky to have a place that brings such fine art and photography to Nashville. Wonderful live music, as well.

Always a great time at the Frist. Relevant and fresh exhibits that are curated very well. The cafe is a great spot to stop in and the music nights that they have during the summer or just a good time. Everything about the Frist is just fantastic. A big fan of the opening night parties they throw for members as well, it's worth it to be a member.

Kind of disappointing given how expensive it is. There are only two exhibits plus a small introductory exhibit about the history of the building. It does have a cool art deco style.

This is a great place to go to see the fine arts. They have some very interesting exhibits, and some not so much. I just depends on your tastes. They also have a fun work shop that you and your family can enjoy. Defiantly a must to stop and check out while in Nashville.

(Descriptive) Nope. Was ok could've been better.

I enjoyed the space and the exhibits were great, but the fee should be free for military like it is at most museums (including ones like the MoMA and the Whitney)
Also, expect the galleries to be noisy/hectic because there are MANY small children who come.
Desmond Williamson
I really enjoyed the nick cave exhibit! The WWI exhibit was also very interesting and it really made me sympathize with the people who went through that. Also, it is free if you are 18 and under, which I am a big fan of. Overall, super cool way to spend an hour or two.

Amazing. Very kid friendly but also is a fun place for creative and artistic adults. Make sure to check what exhibits are open before you head inside because I went in and only one exhibit was actually open but it was still a great time.

I've been multiple times, before als the exhibits were really nice I even love the art area for young kids as well as kids at heart! But on this day, I had the awesome privilege of attending a performance presented by Nashville Jazz Workshop- a tribute to Nina Simone! The entire event was wil organized! The musicians awesome! The singer Dara Tucker PHENOMENAL!!! The Frist has embraced all at forms!

My husband and I come here every time we make a trip to Nashville. Each exhibit is unique and intriguing. The museum is always clean and staff are kind and willing to answer any questions.

One of the best art museums I’ve been to in a long long time. This is well laid out and the exhibits are set up so beautifully to fully capture the store of the artists they showcase.
The building in itself is very historical and so beautiful to see and touch. As a carpenter I first took notice of the floor of the showrooms and thought of the structural magnificence - then found the case that told the store of the floor, why it was like that, and the history of the building.
Well worth admission! Also, don’t sneak in food into the space. It’s not just because the staff doesn’t want to clean up after you. It’s so the person standing next to you in the gallery doesn’t hear you crunch your trailmix with your mouth open (Sorry, passive aggressive message aimed at lady yesterday).

I wish this place could fit more than a couple exhibits. The staff we interacted with were beyond friendly. I also wish there were exhibit pamphlets (maybe there were and I just missed them). Over-all had a great experience because, you know, art. Parking was fine. Also, the tour guide that was roaming was British adding an extra cheesy “umph”.
