Reviews of Salisbury House & Gardens
I had seen a couple performances at the Salisbury House before so when it came time to plan my wedding, I knew there was no other location I would rather have my ceremony at than the Salisbury House. Absolutely stunning. We had our ceremony indoors in the Common Room. There was enough seating for approximately 100 people, and the air conditioning stayed cool even with that many people inside one room. The photos taken there are simply gorgeous and the atmosphere was so refined and elegant. I mean, every single room is beautiful so the photo potential is endless! The staff at the Salisbury House was a joy to work with and they always seemed excited to show me around and ask questions about my big day. Would absolutely recommend to any brides-to-be considering the Salisbury House.
Great experience and a hidden gem in the area!
Well preserved snapshot of history here in the Des Moines area. Plan for about an hour and a half to fully enjoy your time - we did a self guided tour and likely missed a lot of details.
Had our wedding at Salisbury House and it was amazing. Most of our guests were from out of town and didn’t know of this establishment. The house is beautiful on its own so decorating for a wedding was just icing on the cake. The staff was amazing and very receptive and helpful. We can’t recommend them enough!
We stopped to see something different in Des Moines. I can say the Sailsbury house didn't disappoint! amazing history and architecture! Pay the extra for the tour. We will be back to see it in the summer.
We held our ceremony and reception at Salisbury House and Gardens this August. The property is absolutely stunning. We received so many compliments about the location of our ceremony (South Gardens) and reception (Cobblestone Courtyard).
We worked with Lynn throughout the whole process and cannot say enough good things. She really made the experience great! She was there to answer our many questions and was present for multiple walk throughs with different vendors. Lynn and team also worked tirelessly during our event to make sure it went smoothly.
10$ admission was worth it, it's super pretty and a nice way to stay out of the heat without being at home
A beautiful house that has been surprisingly well maintained for being 100 years old. It has a tremendous art collection that's almost worth the price of admission on its own! So many little details went into the design of the place, so I suggest paying the extra few dollars for a guided tour to get a high quality learning experience. We had Judy and she was knowledgeable and funny too.
Super nice house! If you like a museum to go to and not have to read a bunch of stuff to get a feel for the old lifestyle, this is the place for you. Very historic furniture and dishes. Super friendly, knowledgeable staff! They really are educated on the house, and the people who used to own it.
This house is really beautiful with a mix of Tudor and Gothic design. Although the house was ‘recently’ built, in the 1929’s, you wouldn’t know it by the interiors. There’s a lot of cool history about the ceilings and archways that were brought over from England. The staff was very knowledgeable. All in all a great place to visit.
Such a gorgeous property. Staff was doing upgrades in back garden area. I've visited as a vendor for my floral business a few times. Always friendly staff. A must see in Des Moines!
This is a stunning place with amazing art as well as architecture and architectural craftsmanship. We visited today, Nov 12 and we went for the first tour. We had a wonderful and knowledgeable guide and we were the only ones there! A private tour! The guided tour is worth the extra expense as you will see more of the home and you will have docent guided tour with background and additional information. Whether you like textiles, paintings, pipe organs (amazing), sculpture or woodworking, you will delight in this amazing home. And we went with very cold weather and it was toasty warm! You will have stairs to climb. And there is parking. I cant say much about the gardens as it was all covered in a beautiful blanket of snow. This is a must see for locals and visitors. Enjoy!
Beautiful home built in the 1920s designed to reflect the architecture and feel of a manor seen in Salisbury UK. The home is furnished worn some replicas and some authentic 16th century architecture and furnishings. Some of the paintings on the wall are quite gorgeous. Tours of the full house are only offered three times a day, but you can pay $8 to walk around the first floor only. I opted to self guided tour which ended up being very few rooms and the front garden.
We love visiting for the Holly and Ivy event!
I love touring mansions from the early 1900's. This was really interesting and I loved all of the information included about the family.
Nice place and history. Entry fee is little high.
Gorgeous place for a venue! very historic also.
Beautiful, historical home with amazing, high quality art pieces! Fun seasonal events!
This is a wonderful place to tour while visiting or living in the Des Moines Metro. It's tucked away in a beautiful neighborhood and is so picturesque and full of history. Run don't walk!
Salisbury House is one of my favorite destinations! Each time one tours, a different guide tells one different facts re: the House....
there is so much to know about the House and Gardens ! If you are in Des Moines, don't miss it!
This historical home has far more history than what you would normally find in Des Moines, Iowa. Craftsmanship from the 1600s is everywhere, and the flint decorative blocks on the home's exterior is unique. The grounds must be beautiful in warm weather; they were pretty enough in winter.
Wonderful Guided tour and got lucky enough to have Dan McGary be our guide and he captivated us with a lot of facts and some fun stories. Would suggest this tour to anybody interested in amazing architecture and beautiful craftsmanship The Salisbury House is a must see.
Beautiful, they have free classical music every Wednesday 5pm
We went to Mysteries at the Castle and had a great time with three of our kids. It was beautiful, fun and festive. The historic backdrop was delightful to show the kids and imagine with them how we would live there if it was our home. Will return to see the House when it is not a "Castle" :)
Always have a great time exploring the history of our great state of Iowa. Salisbury House never disappoints.
Wonderful tour guide- well worth the small fee to get an extensive look at such a unique house
Fascinating art collection. Some of the art is good, some is pretty bad, but it’s all interesting. Worth a visit. David the tour guide is very good.
Took a self guided tour. Everything was clean and well cared for. Garden didn't have much to offer, it's really just a lawn.
Nice place to visit to see Des Moines history and how the ultra rich lived about 100 years ago. Worth a look.
Very interesting home with a lot of history and beautiful artwork. The staff are very friendly and informative. It is definitely worth a visit.
Amazing place! Incredible that all the furnishings survived it's years as an office complex. Mostly handicap accessible, only a couple places with a couple steps and very helpful staff. Small elevator (won't fit if your legs are extended) works fine for a standard wheelchair. The house has SO many really old pieces that are very interesting and quite an eclectic collection. I spent 4 hours here and ran my battery from 100% to 5% taking almost 400 photos! My guide was wonderful and has been giving tours for 12 years. He was a font of details!
Such a cool, unique, place to have in Iowa!
Beautiful, historic castle in lovely setting. Shakespeare in the Park event was stunning. And the themed ice cream was good.
Beautiful property, lovingly repaired and maintained. It is apparent that the staff are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated, providing well beyond basic facts and showing their enthusiasm. We came to tour a historic property and were delighted with the staff's ability to engage us in the history and stories of the property. The art in the property is exquisite and enjoyable. I highly recommend a visit, superb craftsmanship and staff.
The house itself is fascinating with lots of English & French decor. The self guided tour was fairly easy to follow .
Highly recommend the guided tour...takes approx. 1 hour & really fun to hear stories about the art collection displayed in the house!
The Salisbury House is always a very special experience regardless of whether we are there to begin the annual Holly and Ivy Christmas tour, the summertime Shakespeare on the Lawn or a wedding n the lawn. This year's holiday decorations were outstanding. The staff was warm and welcoming. It was another superb Greater Des Moines and Salisbury House experience.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all,
Bob King
Great place for daughters wedding. 👍Staff and fatalities were fantastic.👍 …
I absolutely love touring the Salisbury House. We went a little early in the year, so the gardens weren't in bloom yet, but the house stands on it's own. The staff were very knowledgeable and super friendly. A must see whenever you're in Des Moines.
Belin Quartet concert. Superb sound and setting. THANKS to the organizers for golf-cart parking shuttles.
This is an amazing and unique place. This house was cobbled together with architectural components from Europe combined with old world craftsmanship. It's hard to imagine that it exists here in Central Iowa.
Very enjoyable ~1 hour self tour (inside only due to cold, rainy weather). The woman at the desk was very knowledgeable and took time to tell us a little more about the history of the house and family before we left. Probably deserves five stars, but they aren't giving guided tours due to COVID and the weather dissuaded us from walking the grounds. Well worth $10 per person.
Not going to lie kind of lame. Not much to see and the garden is empty.
This was a great place to visit. Loved everything about it. The art work, antiques and history was wonderful to look at. I could have spent all day looking at everything and still feel like I would have missed items. This is a treasure.
This is a great place to visit if you are at all interested in history and/or architecture. I took the overall tour, and our tour guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the house and the family history too. She knew a lot of little details, and made the tour fun. I would definitely recommend it, if you have a few hours spend, and would to get a taste of England right in the heart of Iowa!
If you like old buildings and bits of history this place is amazing. They have digital and physical guides, the staff is amazing and helpful in explaining anything I had questions on.
What can interesting old mansion. Great family story. Many of the furnishings are original to the house which really made it authentic. Our docent was very knowledgable and answered our questions for the most part. We spent 2 hours on the guided tour.We highly recommend that over the self paced one because you only get to see the first floor on that one. We went to the basement and all 3 other floors. It was a great tour!
Very interesting to tour, read about the history of the home and family. Home is well kept. The lady welcoming us and selling the tickets was very friendly. You can self tour or have a tour guide for a little more. Tour with guide allows you to go into the library, basement and few other rooms. All 42 rooms are not open to view, but enough are.
A great historical place to visit in Des Moines!
The absolute best Salisbury Steak I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating in my entire life. Honestly, it’s probably better than the Salisbury Steak your mom used to make. I plan on eating here at least 3 times a week from now on. God bless Salisbury Steak House & Gardens.
We have toured several mansions as we vacation, this one is definitely in our top favorite. The history of the family is pretty unique. We had to self tour due to covid and the worker was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions.
If you are into English castles and can't afford to visit England right now this estate offers a very similar setting .
My school age son and I went there the other day. Our tour guide was Sheila and she was amazing. She had so many details and tailored the tour to fit both my son and I (like stories about the boys who lived in the house. My son is still talking about them riding motorcycles through the front and back doors). We also got to see things you don’t get to see in the self guided tour. This was a great experience for us and I would recommend a visit to anyone!
Had the most wonderful tour of this historic house. Our tour guide, David, was incredibly knowledgeable and went above and beyond the call to provide us with the most information and best experience possible. Please take the time to visit this enchanting mansion and make sure to give whatever donation you feel comfortable, so that future generations can enjoy this marvel as much as we have.
This house it a must for someone looking for a cool historical place to visit in Des Moines. The house is inspired by Tudor architecture and it's amazing. It has to be the coolest historical homes I've ever visited. I took the self tour of the first floor and the booklet you get has the backstory and map for the self guided tour. I would definitely suggest a visit!
A beautiful home with a lot to see! I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was thoroughly impressed by how much fun it was to explore this place. I would recommend it to anybody looking for a simple yet fun way to step back in history and enjoy some lovely art and history. :)
Amazing home right in the middle of Des Moines! The history is stunning and you really need to absorb each room. The entryway which has wood from Shakespeare's time is breathtaking and the pipe organ is immense. I would highly recommend taking a tour of this beautiful mansion.
Need to take a more expensive guided tour to see the most, as many parts of the house are off limits otherwise. It's quite impressive either way, though, and it's easy to let yourself believe that you're in England instead of Des Moines. Very beautiful and worth it!
Beautiful home with a great staff that wants to help make the most of your visit. Enjoyed a self-tour but unable to get in on the guided one. The guided one was already full so get there early so you don't miss out on the library and 2nd floor. We will have to go back.
No tours Mondays and during special events, so check the website calendar first! However, the staff is extremely friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. Great place to explore history, art, curation and the minds of a unique set of architects in a magnificent estate which provides for weddings and other events. Definitely worth a stop.
Such a beautiful home! Very impressed by the knowledge of our tour guide. He was engaging, friendly, and you could tell he loves the history of this house.
I've always adore this place since I was a child and my mother would take me. Fun half day activity for children 12 and up. Great little piece of history to partake in. Always great to go back for a visit. I recommend always looking at the website for time and date information though, because they do events that may interfere with regular business hours. If your ever in Des monies I highly recommend.
Beautiful gardens and view. We were there for a play performance.
Phenomenal. Any one who loves history, England, or beauty should check it out. I was blown away. The story of the home and how it came to be is incredible to me. People with incredible sums of money these days would never build anything so amazing. A very unique find in the middle of Iowa.
Beautiful place. It's a huge mansion with ancient architecture and beautiful furniture. You can see hoe different life force back in the early 20th century. You can see appliances from the 1920s. You can take the guided tour and it's nice but it's not necessary. You can walk around and explore the house. However, if you don't take the guided tour, you'llon the library which has some really ancient books and artefacts.
Must visit if you are in Des Moines.
Have lived in Des Moines for a awhile and have never been or heard of this place. The history is fascinating, would recommend the guided tour.
If you enjoy local history, you will love this place. Its a cool step back in time, with really good public access
I had my wedding and reception at the Salisbury House. I enjoyed every bit of our time there!!! They were organized and adjusted to the needs of the day that arose! I could not suggest a better place!!! They are extremely kind people!
Have always wanted to go inside for a tour but never have. Still a very large property and beautiful house to enjoy from the outside.
Fabulous venue for educational trips and high end events. This place transports you back to Tudor era England, surrounded by charming gardens and walking paths. Lots of great opportunities for kid's events.
Great historical house with many things to look at. We went on the guided tour and the guide was able to give lots of insights on the house and family. The library and it's collection is amazing.
Beautiful house and collections. We took the self- guided tour, which is good if you can't make the guided tour times. The art is beautiful and the tapestries are very intricate.
im not one for historic things but this house is pretty amazing. we went there for a trick or treating event. it's more for little kids. my son is 8 bit he still made the best of it. it was $5 per person for this event not a bad price and out waa interesting to see once for me.
The house itself is fascinating with lots of English & French decor. The self guided tour was fairly easy to follow and the staff was very friendly and informative. Definitely worth a visit.
We love the history of this place, but also so many of the quality events.
A miniature imitation of Salisbury Cathedral. However no replicas of the Magna Carta . A lovely residence for one of Des Moines entrepreneurs.Having visited Salisbury Cathedral, this pales to the original presentation.Perhaps this lovely miniature presentation is nearly a-memory to the reflection of a visit by the owner.Another symbolism of limited history and architecture!
Beautiful home. Great tour guide.
Fantastic preservation of a beautiful legacy building. A mini Hearst castle.
Enjoyed my time at the Salisbury House. I went for a wedding. Fascinating history. Major kudos to the historical society that restored this treasure. I highly recommend this for a wedding venue!
Beautiful house with an interesting history. Make sure you take the guided tour because you will get access to rooms you would not see on the self guided tour.
It's a sight to see. It will leave you in a transtic state of mind. The family and house gives you a true understanding of the family values, and beliefs. I recommend a tour guide. It's a couple, individual, or family event to attend.
Lovely lady she's patient and understanding with your questions and concerns with any and all things. We booked this location for our wedding (has not happened yet). But done with ease!
What a treasure grove in des moines. Love the history and beauty in a single place nestled deep in south of grand. From Shakespeare on the patio to dinners in the dining room, the place always impresses.
Beautifully decorated, was enjoyable having the entire place to ourselves towander the halls. People need to come and enjoy the spirit of Christmas here.
Beautiful setting for Macbeth with tall trees as three witches run thru the nite. Food delicious by HyVee. Young thru older came for Macbeth. 1st timers will return, maybe Christmas Tea. Enjoy.
Incredible tea at a world class castle. I can't wait to return.
I visited Salisbury when I was a little girl. It was as amazing as I remember, and our tour guide was outstanding. A must visit!!
What a great DesMoines treasure! More people should check it out and take one of their interesting guided tours! They also have great events!
Very interesting place. Lots of history. Great guided tour!
Fantastic visit, exceptional tour guides and staff. Lots to learn and enjoy. Well worth the time.
Incredible space in a super cool neighborhood, worth a few dollars admission to help support the foundation.
Best Salisbury steak in town!!!!! I recommend visiting "Steve Bunce's page dedicated to Salisbury steaks (with garnish) with an honorable mention to hamburger helpers Salisbury mix" Facebook page for all things Salisbury (as long as it's Salisbury steak) and the world of Salisbury steaks!
Beautiful Historic Home, Worth a Visit!
I enjoyed seeing many historical items in a mansion moved to Des Moines piece by piece from England.
Interesting place to visit with lots of history. A bit on the spendy side though. Guided tour was informative.
Really great place to visit. Jill was a fantastic docent, very friendly and informative.
Always like to learn something new.
This looks like a lovely place to visit! so easy to get to in West Des Moines and I can't wait to visit it!
Just lovely. So happy we decided to go there. It is a nice stop off.
Stunningly gorgeous! Don't wear heels.
Enjoy the great architecture of this house that sits majestically on a hill. See something different every time I visit.
One of America's castles. Tours, teas, historic lectures, symphony performances and yearly Shakespeare on the Lawn. A jewel in Des Moines westside.
Super cool place. Not very busy, and the staff was really knowledgeable and friendly.
Great museum, beautiful grounds and architecture. Would be a great place for engagement or wedding photos
Great Tour and Guide. Very knowledgeable and interested in his topic.
Concert on the lawn. Wonderful!
It's a nice way to spend an afternoon... Wish more of the house was accessible to the public however...
Excellent place to visit, extremely great people working there, Kathy is one great tour guide...
David the tour guide very friendly and house is beautiful worth the extra money for full tour.
It is always fun to visit old mansions and the staff knows their history well.
The Halloween event at the Salisbury house was GREAT! I only wish we could have gotten there earlier.
We went there for the Halloween event. It was great. Loved the Mansion.
Great historical property with a garden. They also host quite a few different activities!
The history was neat. Paid 12 bucks for the tour. Well worth it!!!
Beautiful grounds and buildings. Excellent virtual classes and teas as well

It was beautiful and interesting. Tour is the way to go . Ask for Corydon.
The Salisbury steak was excellent today
Such a cute place, and having events here makes timeless photos
Nice but the sidewalks are dangerous and your better walking in the grass to avoid the tripping hazard

My step-son visited this beautiful museum on a visit to his grandparents in Des Moines. His grandmother, and four cousins went there as an activity and he absolutely loved it. It was summer, and he said it was very cool inside. He would defiantly want to visit again. He loved it.
(Translation) I arrived early so I couldn't get inside to visit, it's worth it
