As members of Harvest Hosts, we were able to spend the night in our RV in their parking lot. This was super nice. Very clean and well kept. The museum wasn't open when we were there, but the outdoor part was. It's a great place to take a walk or hike. Beautiful and quiet with some wildlife.
Robin K.
Really not that much there for the price. Long ride in a horse trailer than head been converted into a people mover. Really rough ride. Was super hot today so that didn't help. Been around to a lot of historical sites and for the price... This one just didn't

A wonderful interactive museum/recreational park with a full sized town with various different shops with reenactment actors portraying 19th and 20th century Iowans. My wife and I loved it, great for families on a beautiful day. We learned so much about early Iowa history and what it was like on the plains.
Micah Engle
We really enjoyed Santa's Rockin Holiday Lights. We went on Xmas Eve at 9 and there were very few other cars. Lights synced with the music are always great and without bumper to bumper traffic you could stop when you wanted to and enjoy a whole song.
Shane Howard
This is a fun place to visit. Many of the shops in the town weren't open but it could have been due to it being late in the season. The walk through the old farms was fun & neat to see. It feels like taking a small step back in time.
Nick Lees
What a blast! Our whole family enjoyed it so much that we upgraded to an annual pass. Looking forward to going back.
Jason Cox
It's was pretty neat. My boys are 5 and 8 and they really enjoyed seeing the old shops and homes. It was a lot of walking, but not terrible. The workers are very knowledgeable! The black smith likes to play "Stump The Blacksmith". If you can bring him a history question he can't answer, you win! We couldn't beat him.
Carl DiGregorio
Great place to learn about farming during the Ioway period, mid 1800's and early 1900's. Great village with the Flynn mansion as a highlight. The staff is wonderful and very knowledgeable. Worth a stop.

This was a fantastic day outdoors walking the farms of 1700, 1850, and 1900 and then through the town of Walnut Hill. I learned a LOT but it was fun! My wife and I talked to each volunteer we encountered as they were driving the tram, baking, cooking, and sewing, and setting type as they went about their lives. You must talk with these folks. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and very engaging. We talked with the folks making stew, preparing a pie, getting the beautiful stove hot for cooking, sewing at the Flynn's mansion, the "department" store, druggist, blacksmith, and the newspaper. Each knew so much and spoke as if it was 1876. So, I learned that horseshoes and tires were factory made and shipped to town and the paper was printed with national news on one side and then the local news could be printed on the other after it arrived in town. Even the cashier was friendly and personable. I will return if I have the chance.
Valerie Duenser
Great day spent here. Knowledgeable "residents" discussed their lives in several eras. Some authentic and recreated building make up a street scape. Informational placards explain the uses of buildings if "residents" aren't there. Tractor ride to very old homesteads. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience.
Christy Tharp
My favorite place! Knowledgeable interpreters and great exhibits.
Tori Smith
It's a good way to spend half a day. More than that if you're really into historical details.
There are picnic tables everywhere. I recommend bringing your own food. There is no restaurant. Only a small snack shop that opens at 1.
MIZZY Mf99
Definately a fun place to go to with kids there's a lot for them to view from the 17, 18, and 1900s to see how it was back in the day is awesome for them to see and learn how years change, and the people there will give you plenty of information they are nice too!
Andrew Colosky
Fun place to visit. We have gone for their apple fest and Halloween events. It’s a fun journey to learn about farming at the various stages in history. Repeat visits might start to get old.
The tractor rides take you back to a section that’s not really wheel chair/ walker friendly so something to consider if that’s a factor for your group.
Marty Hogan
Nice diversion today. Nice walk through farming history and a little something for everyone. We did not stay for the Oldies Ballgame but watched a bit. Easy walk and fun tractor ride back in time. Little ones will have fun but strollers may be a bit hard to get around. People had them but they had them there. Will be back.
Micah Luethje
This a great learning experience for the whole about our history as a country. Also great for school field trips of all ages. They multiple different events going on throughout the year from baseball games to Apple harvest. The only yhing it needs is a bit of expansion done to the place. Would love to learn how to volunteer or somehow get them some funding to help;).
Laura P
What a wonderful time traveling experience! This historic venue takes you back to different eras of living and farming in Iowa. We enjoyed what probably has been our 100th time visiting and it never gets old, pun intended. This visit, we brought our 91 year old grandmother who lived most of her life in Seattle and recently moved to Des Moines. The walking terrain is great for mobile adults and kids but slightly difficult for wheelchairs and/or strollers. The buildings, barns, and houses are in incredibly well preserved conditions and make you truly feel like you are immersed in the era you are visiting.
This makes for a great day out with the family and you get to learn all kinds of historical facts!
My only issue was the tractor depot had moved which made it a bit redundant walking back and forth from the entrance to the town. ( would love to see it moved back!)
Michael Glore
Lot's of interesting exhibits. Three period farms and a replica town. The 1870s mansion was built on site and is wonderfully period furnished. Admission and concessions are reasonably priced as are the gift shop items. Much of the staff is in costume and very friendly. They are happy to answer all your questions. A bit of a walk so I personally wouldn't recommend the whole museum if you have problems walking. You cannot get a wheelchair around much of it and almost all of it is not the most wheelchair accessible but there are ramps. Lots of dirt paths and boardwalks. It took us almost 3 hours but you could spend twice that amount of time here. I'm sorry we hadn't visited before.
Robert Ochs
Good day, touring the various farms. It had young people as guides, docents at the displays. They were History students who were excellent. Great to see youth caring about our history.
Jeremy Baker
Friends and I ran the LHF XC run. 5 miles over a varied terrain with a couple of creek crossing for added fun. Not a hard run, but a fun route and atmosphere. We figured there were about 400 runners with a well marked out course and lots of corner guides. They had mac n' cheese, carrot cake, bananas, coffee, water, and hot apple cider at the finish, which was uber nice amd a great change from the normal post race treats.
The farm looks really cool, but with the cold temps and a tight schedule we didn't stay long after. We'll head back sometime in the summer and enjoy the farm as intended.
Jody Beck
We love Living History Farms. It was on our "must go to" list when we traveled back to Iowa to see family for vacation. Great docents in period costume. Great place to enjoy lunch too - great salads, nachos and cheese, plus more. One of our favorite places with great memories. Great place to volunteer, too. Lots of special events.
Jordan “Pacific NorthWest Yetti.” Pawley
This place was awesome, give yourself at least 4 hours. It's big, over 500 acres. And has separate towns you can visit based on specific eras in time. They have done an excellent job, and also have live reinactors in period dress to explain things and answer questions. It will be nice probably close to 5 miles when all is said and done. The price may seem steep but is worth it too see the entire thing. A great museum and worth the stop.
Matt Rawson
A+ from start to finish! Starting with the 1700 Native American's to an 1850's farm to a 1900's town. The volunteers go above and beyond. You will not be disappointed taking the time for this fantastic step back in history.
Marie Rolf
I absolutely love learning about our history, and I'm so happy to be able to share that with my children. Every person we came across was so knowledgeable, and answered all of our questions. I can't wait to go back!
Riana O'Keefe
AWESOME place for young kids! The whole place spans across many acres so there is a tractor ride that takes you to each zone. It’s split up by centuries, 1700, 1800 & 1900. The 1900s area has a wonderful group of friendly and cute animals such as gentle baby cows, friendly adult cows and mellow horses. You can tell that the animals are well cared for and very healthy. Kids can pet the animals but do not feed them. It’s absolutely beautiful there and definitely a place you will want to take your family.
Brent Bloomingdale
Very in interesting place to visit. Lots of history. We started with catching the wagon ride over to the far side of the grounds and working our way back. You are allowed to take a picnic lunch in and they have nice a few nice areas to do that in. We caught a day where they had actors all dressed up in period costume and also had an fashioned baseball game going on. Lots of info and things to see. I would re commend checking it out. It took us a little over 3 and 1/2 hours to view it all.
Michael Miller
This is worth a visit. I would suggest about 2-3 hours. The site is split by the freeway, so there is a "tram" pulled by a John Deere tractor to get you from one place to another. I thought this might be inconvenient, but I ended up waiting only a couple of minutes for a pickup.
Brenden Allen
The farm is fun and educational for kids and cool to go to if you've never been, when I went half the stores were closed or roped off so you could not go in and explore. It wasn't so much living history as it was just a normal freeze frame of history and like a normal museum, there were no activities to do to get in to the feel of how things were and at almost 20$ a person to get in I'd have to say in that current state it is not worth it. Lots of stuff is in disrepair like roofs above bathrooms and other "none history buildings" and the Future of farming buildings and an exhibit which are really cool buildings on the outside are shut down and going to waste. It was a real shame that the area as a whole is in the state that it is in. If you can get discount tickets I'd say it's worth going but if you have a large group like I did with my family the 100$ that it was to get everyone in was in my opinion a waste with the lack of stuff that you could do and how much there was to actually see in the town and the farm areas. The print shop was staffed and really cool to learn about the printing press and how they do all that.
Engineer engineer
It's a nice place to visit and learn about Iowa history. Between the now and my blast visit from several years ago things did change, there seem to be less farm animals, the Indian village moved, and some places do appear to be as well maintained. Still worth visiting.
Chris Klahn
Great place to visit to experience history. A little pricey, and on hot days you will likely need to pace yourself (and experience what it was like to live without air conditioning and electricity). Lots to see.
The Rolling Rockhound
A walk back in time and history. Really enjoyed our hike through the farms and through Iowa farming history.
Dieter Stapelberg
Great visit. Take your time, and browse at your leisure. Guides in the buildings are knowledgeable and helpful. If you have kids, you can get rid of some energy.
Lisa Allen
Took my 6 yr old grandson. It was enjoyable and the employees sis a great job providing information, however, they are short staffed, so you don't get as much out of the visit as you used to.
Shelly Hamlin
The guides in each location are very friendly and knowledgeable. You can leisurely see the farm in a day. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Abhay Gobade
Great place to learn about history but most of the buildings were not operational because of shortage of staff. I would recommend to see town of walnut first and then see other farms.
Natalie Colosky
Went for Applefest and it was a lot of fun. There was so much to do, that we didn’t get to do it all, but we enjoyed the day.
Eric Hemesath
Very interesting to learn about the first people to settle the prairie. Nice day, nice walk, kids had a great time. Also, LHF puts on a 7 mile race every November. If you like to run through & in nature then check it out.
Abdul Hameed
A great place to visit, I was there Aug 13, 2011. I really enjoyed my time there and got good knowledge about history.
Rosie Fitzpatrick
This place is a must if you are visiting the Des Moines area. There is so much to learn and many fun interactive things to do! The staff are very helpful and do a good job of explaining the history behind certain things.
Gail Olson
Nice place though little crowded with over 600 students on field trips. Interpreters are friendly and knowledgeable. Military/senior/AAA discount on admission.
Laura Hansen
Really neat place! Great day trip for a young family.
Kyle Lyons
5 years ago I gave it 5 stars. Just went back, this place is literally falling apart. Signs have fallen over, very few animals, several buildings were closed/locked up, very few people working, the tractor pick up spots are falling apart/not in use, exhibit was closed - etc.
Maggie Osborne
The farm was run down from previous visits. The grounds and gardens were not well kept. Some of the presenters talked too long for kids. More demonstrating would be better as well as possible hands on experiences.
Carissa Rogers
Great place to walk back in time. Everyone in our group of all ages enjoyed this trip.
Kevin Parmenter
Excellent facility with numerous things to see and experience of farming from years ago. We have an annual membership so there is no entry fee with an annual membership. LHF offers numerous special events and classes you can sign up for if they are of interest to you. There is usually no wait to get into the facility except on those days when they have really large celebrations scheduled such as the Memorial Day or the July 4th events. Even on these days, the time to get in, pay, and start seeing the sites or planned events is literally less than 10 minutes. About 500 acres of land with numerous buildings to see and things to do. There are several farm areas that have been set up to show how things were accomplished in the 1700s through 1900. There is also an 1876 town that shows what a frontier community would have been like. This town includes many craftsmen and merchants including functioning blacksmith and brrommaker facilities. There is also a newspaper publisher, milliner, doctor, lawyer, vet, banker, & druggist. A general store is in the town along with homes, church, schoolhouse, and country cemetery. It allows for a relaxed way to spend the day seeing numerous interesting things. Great place and lots of different areas where you can purchase food and drinks. Can you tell I'm a huge fan?
Pearl White
Wow! This was not what I expected, but was completely delighted with it. We did the 1900 house dinner and just loved it. The food was so delicious. I just couldn't get my head around cooking with a flame oven and producing such excellent dishes. I know I couldn't do it.
The staff was personable and knowledgeable. I don't think there was a question we could ask that they wouldn't have known the answer to.
Even the animals seemed to be performing for us. Such beautiful horses and mule. They even had a farm cat that was super friendly and adorably cute.
We were so entertained that I didn't notice the time flying. I recommend this place and intend on trying the other house tours/dinners.
Paul Oyen
This is a place where history comes alive. Such a great job of incorporating many significant landmark periods in both Iowa and National history. As the Industrial Revolution swept our nation, the rapid pace of average people changed most dramatically during the noted periods of time.
This is a Must See!
Jeff Liske
Have taken my grandchildren at different times all have enjoyed our trip in time.
Mr Anthony
It's very cute and informative. Glad there is something like this out there. I love that you can go into the buildings and experience early frontier living. The land that it's on is huge but there are not that many exhibits. I would definitely recommend it but it's not an all day outing, I'd pair it with another excursion.
Stephen Wathne
A must see if you've never been. Dated but a great display of the history of the American farmer.
David Kirchhoff
It was a ton of fun. Went with my girlfriend and all of our kids. We all had a lot of fun. Many different activities to do and people to learn from in different parts of the farm. The tractor ride was fun. I brought a wagon for my youngest(2 years old) worth it but the tractor ride was a bit difficult with it.
Brian Bartsch
Great place to go to get a feel for what life was like 120 to 150+ years ago. Great actors and actresses who are all very informative!
Timothy Chew
Very fun and informative. Entertaining tractor ride and nice hosts.
Alicia.Rose. S.
Loved the history, we spent hours there.
Lisa Tichy
Great time with my nieces. Very hands on here and it was great. The people were very knowledgeable. A greet time. Only warning, make sure u have dollar bills for the pop machine way out on the tractor ride going to the 1700s. Thankfully another guest had change. We love this place
Kristy Lynn Burnside Heath
I'm glad I came here. I love learning about History. It's a walk but it's worth it.
Maxi
Went for the holiday lights. Was not disappointed in the least.
Ksenia Stith
Very much worth visiting! Plenty history and a huge area to explore!
Lorne Wiggins
The place is very beautiful. It makes me enjoy the simple things in life. I saw a lot of farm animals and we also tried organic farm produce. A must visit place.
Monette Harbeck
Living History was interesting, but it looks like the poor place needs lots of maintenance, building and grounds.
Sarah Rebecca Macbeth
Great all day activity, make sure you wear walking shoes! They do a great job keeping the place clean and the staff are very friendly!
Rachelle Walter
It's always alot if fun to come here! Everyone is nice and has a lot of knowledge.
Jessica Kelly
Our family has a pass to Living History Farms, we really enjoy going several times a year.
Matthew Frideres
We were actually here working on a project on the Flynn Mansion when I got this review request, but I've been here on dozens of occasions. Great family outing. I highly recommend them. If you have the opportunity to get here on a Saturday in the summer they play old time baseball games which are also fun and occasionally have audience participation, they also have special events for Halloween. The old time 4th of July celebration is great as well.
Rebecca Foster, PhD
Can't believe this is right in the middle of things. Beautiful property, helpful historical figures on site to inform and educate. A way to get away without leaving the area.
Susan Poole
This has the bones of a great experience, but has somehow fallen on hard times apparently. The people they did have working did a great job of playing their role and teaching- A+! But it seems to me they need someone with a fresh vision and marketing abilities to bring in the revenue, or better allocate their revenue to make it show that they care about the gem they have. Weeds in the parking lot and entrance...peeling paint everywhere...dusty as tired displays...few people living the life of its history. I left feeling sad for them.
With a little work and vision, it could become a popular wedding and event venue and their modern house experiment could become an Airbnb that could provide some financial streams for them, too, I would think...? Especially when the park closes so early these days. (4:00...on a Saturday??)
Made me curious as to what's happened as I sense that at one time it was more vital than it now appears to be. I'm guessing it's similar as to what happened to the Amana Colonies. When I returned to visit in adulthood, I was saddened and surprised to see how much had changed since I was a kid. All told, I still think it was interesting and worth doing, just less than what we hoped for and expected.
Jeff Mathias
Amazing facility, was a Penal farm in its prior life and then gifted and in trust only for current use. A bit underfunded so looking ragged at the edges. May have to wait 40 min for wagon ride to farms.
Erica Dawson
My girls had so much fun at the Living History Farm. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. We weren't able to get through the whole thing in one day. We can't wait to go back and see the rest!
sparKEJr1095
An awesome experience, with so many authentic pieces of history. On the day I went, the blacksmith shop and the type-settet/printing shop keepers were amazing story tellers who did a great job of staying in character. I especially loved how in depth both of these shop owners knew their craft. Well worth the entrance fee and even more, it would take me a lifetime to assemble all of the history my family got to see here.
Pete Jarvis
Most interesting thing I seen was a little piglet running around the yard like a little dog
Fran Timmons
We took our 6 year old grandson to the Santa Rock N Lights at Living History Farms and he loved the lights! We also enjoyed the beautiful LED lights, bright and colorful. Well worth the money.
Mischelle Hamilton
So way back when my daughter-in-law booked the Church of the Land and the Visitors Center for her wedding, we read through the rules and I was very intimidated. While I understood the need for the rules as this is a living museum that needs to be protected, I was fearful that a careless guest would bring down the wrath of Living History Farms and cost our party all kinds of fines. I am happy to report that our fears were unfounded.
Ann Marie was our contact for the ceremony at the church. She was so helpful explaining everything from where everyone should park to how to adjust the temperature to cute traditional things like ringing the bell after the wedding. The church is beautiful as always and it was a great choice.
I'm at at a loss for the name of the young lady who was our contact at the visitors center for the reception but she was awesome. Not only did she help decorate, move tables and go find things we forgot, she hung around the venue until the very end. The space was very nice with all kinds of possibilities for arranging and good flow. The dance floor got well used as our guests danced away and I think everyone was comfortable in the space.
Please do not overlook this site as a possible venue for whatever you are planning. You will not only get a very well cared for physical space but a very nice group of people to help. A++
Amanda Valderrama
Went to see Santas Rock and Lights and it was great!
Michelle Tuel
This is a great way to see our Iowa history. Shows how things have changed and progressed over the years. Demonstrations are going on in several locations throughout Living History Farms. Employees are very knowledgeable about the areas they are working in. They have Blacksmith, Broom Making, Farming, Drug Store, General Store and many others. We got to see heritage pigs, horse, mule, sheep, chickens & ducks. Also in the different houses they were making their meals for lunch. We saw stew made over the fire and also bread made in one of the wood stoves. Definitely will be back.
Mia Olufade
Usually enjoy visiting living history farms. This trip was disappointing and seemed like a waste of money. Some parts were closed which is understandable but you should be aware prior to going. Many in the houses and areas you go to the employees were not demonstrating or informing you like they usually would like they have in the past. Was not very interesting, informative or educational. The tractor ride had a long wait time but there was also quite a few people. Of all the years I have visited this is the first time I have been disappointed with the visit.
Brandon Cooper
Great for thw family and if your all about history it's a great place to go
Jay Udey
I did the 5k trail run with my daughter here and we had a blast. It was a ton of fun and pretty well organized for their first ever kids run. The warm up routine was great for the kids, the course itself was fun and the finish was great.
I would give a 5 star review but I was pretty disappointed when the rest of my family along with my sister in law and boyfriend had to pay full admission in order to watch my daughter and I finish.
Donna Ross
Fun place! We even went on a super hot day (103° heat index) but the different areas had air conditioning and there was plenty of shade and breeze and we still had a great time! The staff are super knowledgeable about their respective areas and do a really good job playing their parts and are dressed according.
Morris A
This was an awesome experience. Employees were knowledgeable without being overly stuck on role playing. There was a good overall picture of societal class and daily life in Iowa through the years.
Abby Feek
This was an awesome place! I figured on spending maybe an hour or two but we got there when they opened at 9 and didn't leave until 1! The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. I learned so much and it was completely fascinating! We had a 14 year old girl with us and she loved it as well. I would definitely visit this place again! The only thing I would say is to make sure you bring water and wear walking shoes.
Michaela Hixenbaugh
Such a unique and fun experience for all ages. I love the Flynn Mansion. Staff and volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable. I like to visit every couple of years and am never disappointed. And a stop at the gift shop to grab some old fashioned sarsaparilla and rock candy is a must before you go.
Susan Greenlee
4th of July weekend was so much fun! I took between 400 and 500 pictures. Very hot, but cool breeze in the shade. So glad I went!
Elle
This was amazing! I really hope this is something that happens every year!
Courtney Donaldson
Absolutely love this place!! We get the family membership each year which makes it easy to justify a quick hour and a half long trip to the town on one day, and maybe a longer trip out to the farms on another day. The membership is well worth it when it allows you to register for special events and camps before the general public, and saves you money on each camp registration. If you do the camps, the membership pays for itself! We spend time at living history farms probably 4 to 5 times per summer, and my kids are still not sick of it after several years of doing it!
Josie Lewis
A lot has changed since I was there last. A lot of things were closed due to not having enough staff. We wanted to know more about some of the areas and asked them staff questions and all gave us amazing answers except one. In the 1900s farm house we asked a bunch of questions and the employee in the house wasn't able to answer a single question we asked.
Dan Ocheltree
I hadn't been there since 5th grade and after we left I really regretted not returning sooner. It's not that I didn't remember what it was all about, but I didn't realize how much detail I'd forgotten. It was so neat to see them washing dishes after having cooked lunch with what people of the time period would have used. There was just so much cool stuff there! I feel like it's a pretty popular field trip, so maybe some people don't feel like they need to go with their kids since the school will take them. Having been in this boat myself, I'm glad we finally just went. I know I enjoyed it more than the kids, and the kids loved it. Do yourself a favor and make a day of this place. You won't regret it! We'll be back soon!
Dottie Rogers
So much fun and educational. You walk through history on a farm from earlyish to 1900. Well maintained buildings beautifully preserved. All of the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. My five year old grandbaby wanted to make a deposit at the bank and the lady played along.
Natasha Wainscott
We had a wonderful time! Very nice, friendly, knowledgeable folks in period costume. It's quite a lot of walking, but very much worth it. We took our kids after school had started, so there was hardly anyone there.
Chris Matson
Fun place to visit and learn. Enjoyed the old rules baseball game.
Adis Nukic (CaptainBosnia93)
Good place to take your family on a walk and go down history lane. Always a pleasure to stop by and see how life was a while ago makes you have a level of understanding and appreciation of things we have today. Also place is neat and clean. The staff are outgoing and friendly. Thanks guys.
James Hagan
Very interesting with a lot to look at. Took our 6Yr old granddaughter and she had a good time. The people working there were good to share information. The houses on the farm section were nice. Would've been nice to have more demonstrations and information on the farmstead part of the farms.
Jayme Chambers
My book club did one of their dinners around the Christmas holiday and it was a fantastic experience. We heard a brief history of the family and the farm whilst sitting by the fire drinking mulled wine. It felt very authentic and the ladies were fantastic hosts. Our book club plans to do this again! It was lovely. Also, the food was delicious. I highly recommend doing the dinners they have here. Be prepared because you'll need to go to the website and book one of these dinners several weeks in advance.
Lisa Hilton
If you cant walk alot your going too have issues. Enjoyable fun place too go just alot of walking. The day we went it was too hot and that did not help me. The staff was friendly love the fact they accomidate too those whom have medical conditions was able too be mask free which for my family is a huge deal during this pandimic we have medical conditions and its hard too go places because of the mask requirements. They dohave tractors too cut down on the walk. Just wish it was a little more walk friendly we had invited both my parents whom are in there 60's too come with us and realized were glad they had other plans. With there disablity they wouldn't have made it threw the farm. Beutifull place otherwise
Randi Stone
We absolutely love visiting here. I always learn something new, every single visit. Everyone who works here is so kind, and all of the holiday and special events are so much fun.
Esme McCloud
This place is a great learning experience for all ages! It allows inside looks into Pioneer life and is filled with great actors/workers representing multiple time periods. A definite summer stop if you're in town or even the living history farms race in the fall!
Skyler S
Great place to visit! Take a trip that will bring you back to the past where you are able to learn the history of the past and how far we have come over the last 300 hundred years.
Alvaro Prataviera Filho
I worked as a volunteer there giving out candy and it was awesome. Lots of kids, kind staff, no beer but they had free water which is great.
Chelsea Bauman
Absolutely wonderful. It was wonderful taking a day away from technology and watching the kids immerse themselves in history. They had a blast learning new things, seeing how our ancestors once lived and havent stopped talking about it since we got home.
Abby Cornelison
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Living History Farms. Our favorite sites were the blacksmith and the newsprint buildings. The people working the sites were dressed in time era garments and were very knowledgable and friendly.
Be prepared for some walking. Strollers are a good idea for families with small children. Lots of hands on experiences available.
Eddie Dunbar
An awesome place to visit for an afternoon. The interpretive staff and volunteers are amazing, and it's a great interactive way to experience history. Lots to see, so plan to spend a few hours if you want to see everything.
Ashley D
Such a fun place to visit, each time I go I learn something new and last time the man in the doctor's office was so informative we ended up sticking around listening for nearly an hour alone and learned so much more interesting facts about the old days, medicine and the original doctor that actually owned and worked the building they have today(though most of the time he would make house calls back then), it was just so intriguing! It really is an amazing step back into time and so cool to have a place like this here in Des Moines. I think more non members would visit if the admission wasn't quite as expensive, but with just a single membership you get a plus one, even a non member in for free!
Trix Underwood
Go here prepared to spend the entire day here. The interpretors are extremely knowledgeable, the buildings are beautiful, and the nature is breathtaking. Fun for any age.
Bai Yung
I m very happy i came to this place. Our family dont have any farm industry background and very are not very interested in it either. However, we find this museum impress us because it is not just a museum. Its a living story museum. This place is huge, there is a lot of farm history you can see. The old town is very interesting that makes you feel you go back to West World. And there are numerous very friendly staffs in each building of the town would tell you all the stories behind their store. You and your family wilk enjoy very much
Jim Skrydlak
I recommended a visit to my younger brother. Yesterday, I met him, his wife, his six-year-old son, and his nearly three-year-old daughter there. Everybody enjoyed it immensely. Everybody whom we encountered there was knowledgeable and friendly. The people at each of the farms really went out of their ways to do things to involve, teach, and amuse the children. We'll be back soon.
Shawn That one guy
Flynn High Style Coursed Meal was awesome. Beautiful setting, very interesting experience
Emily Rose
We must have come on an off day. Not many people around. The printing press and blacksmith were VERY informative and talkative
The general store employee said 'let me know if you have any questions' and silence. The woman in one of the houses said 'no I don't live here I just pretend to for 5 hours then I go home '
I guess I was expecting to be more immersed with role playing and a learning experience.
I mostly just walked around reading signs, which was disappointing.
The tractor driver was great too!
Christopher Evenson
Brought a group there. Motorcoach driver. Low key historical enjoyment. Neat that they had people in each building, and knowledgeable. So friendly. If you have a mature group pick a day that has comfortable weather.
Thomas Selgrade
We went in the morning during the harvest festival. The weather was nice and it was not crowded. We enjoyed the different areas and had fun watching an old timey baseball game with candy and soda from the snack vendor. Great family fun!
Tom Weissgerber
As older adults were apprehensive if it would be to kid oriented, it was not. Each area was well thought out, and the museum hosts were all very knowledge and provided a wealth of information. We spent close to 4 hours.
laura garrett
This is a great place to take kids for a look at past iowa history
Brett Elliott
It was fun, we went for July 4th. But the price didn't make sense. $15 per person and then many of the events inside cost additional money as well. Not sure it's worth any regular attendance for $50 a visit by the time I pay for the whole family. Which is too bad because it's a beautiful bit of history.
Kody DePauw
Always enjoyed this place growing up. Seems pricey for what they offer. When we bought our tickets the lady told us it was wheelchair accessible. That was a lie we could only see the beginning before my clients wheelchair got stuck in the gravel.
Jason
Really great to see the old buildings and people in period dress. 2 year old was bored walking through the old buildings but enjoyed the animals at the farm. He also enjoyed the watermelon for the 4th of July.
Ben Kamp
It was so much fun! I loved giving my daughter the tour around it allowed me to use the years research and application in 18th and 19th century woodworking to good use. The only thing this place is missing is a woodwright. Oh and a chef cooking at the homes.
Ashley Downs
Great fun for the whole family.
Thursten 4Moore
Extremely interesting and fun. Lots of information about the way people lived and worked in the years gone by. We spent half a day and probably saw less than half the property. We'll be back repeatedly so we can see different sections each time.
LaKisha Elliott
Wonderful place to visit! We learned some history and even got to interact, which makes the experience so much more rewarding!Everyone from the period actors to the staff working in the gift shop were incredibly nice.
Tony Murray
Even my young kids had a pretty great time.
Matthew Johnson
Great place to take the family for a day. Show kids what it was like before all three modem technology. Excellent learning experience.
Randy Thomson
We drove from Omaha to Des Moines to visit Living Farms. We enjoyed the village shops and checking out all the old business buildings. The farms were great also. We enjoyed our time there. I recommend stopped there.
Trae Blessing
Love this place. Small historic village, old mansion, historic farmhouse, blacksmith shop, church, general store, various other shops and period actors. Hosts various holiday events and fun runs. I enjoy this place every time I go. Good stop for tourists and locals.
Marlyn Copeland
It was very interesting and the guides were good in tell their facts along with a storyline. The whole area was spotless and we were there on a rainy day.defiantly worth going again without 24 kids to get it all
Jan Jones
We always have fun here! Such knowledgeable folks, excellent exhibits and so many things to do. This is our first year with a family membership and we are enjoying it thoroughly.
Aaron Schutte
Every trip to Living History Farms has been wonderful and very educational for my students. I love how some of the guides really get into their parts. A great experience for families and classes.
Elisabeth “Liz” Duinink
We went for the family Halloween and were herded around like cattle. Feeling like you were being prodded past closed buildings where the kids received one piece of candy, for a grand total of seven pieces. We felt rushed at the "selfie stations" and would've had to wait in tremendously long lines to have a picture taken with their costumed characters. The cups of pop and popcorn were a pleasant surprise while we waited in line for a 3 minute wagon ride pulled by a team of 2 tired horses. All in all for an entrance of $46.00 for 3 children and 4 adults I'd say nay...
Andy S.
This is my kids favorite place to go during the summer. The volunteers are great at answering all of the questions the little ones throw at them. We always take the tractor back to the Ioway Village first and work our way back to the front.
Josh Kirkpatrick
We brought our kids here a few years ago, when they were just 6 and 4 years old. We all loved it! What an amazing way to learn about some of our nation's history!
Ameya Amritwar
Great attraction ! really loved the well preserved cabin, all the farm equipment from old days, specially loved doctors office, bank and the pharmacy. Well trained and interactive staff. Great food at the machine restaurant !
Allie Lauritson
So much fun!!! I love visiting with the kids. It blows me away to visit the past. So excited for the new season to start.
Definitely recommend the winter tea party☕
Cynthia Carlsen
Loved Santa's Rock N Lights are fantastic! A must see. Just note that cash is not accepted, only debit or credit cards.
carla foster
It was a wonderful day with my church family Cambria Baptist church. All the kids an adults enjoyed themselves the kids all enjoyed going back in time to see what it was like. Great place to take your family
LeAnn Larsen
We enjoyed family Halloween at living history farms. The horse drawn cart ride was neat. The princesses and super heros we're great with kids.
Sarah Simmer
Such a fun place to visit as a kid and now taking our own children. The weather didn't let us see the farm side but we still had a great time!
Pastor Joseph Karge
Hi, this is Pastor Joseph and Jody Karge,....we have had the pleasure to officiant and preside at numerous weddings at the Church of the Land at Living History Farms. It is one of our favorite venues. The Church of the Land is simply beautiful as it stands, allowing our brides and grooms to create a simple and elegant ceremony without an extravagant decorating budget. The staff at Living History is always professional and accommodating. We highly recommend that any bride and groom looking for a wedding venue, consider Living History Farms.
Ben & Hilary Hogan
Fun stop for families—was disappointed when we arrived at 2:30 pm on Saturday that things were already closed although the schedule noted they closed at 4. Would have enjoyed seeing more!
Kate Challis
This is the best place to go with kids of all ages in all of Des Moines. Get a pass, and if you have to nix one, for sure nix the Science Center, which hasn't been updated in seven years. LHF continues to grow and improve.
Except the weird moldy dome exhibit at the end, but nobody goes there for that.
Kris Bunda
So many knowledgeable historians in period garb at this place. We'd never been here before, but as much fun as it was, we'll go again. Our whole family went, incl. 3, 6, and 8yr olds.
Only one shopkeeper was overly uptight about the youngest (who was not out of control) and could not stop interrupting her explanations with "we don't touch the desk, we don't touch the door, we don't touch the chair...," to the point we were finally too annoyed to stay and learn about the work and equipment.
Even though there were many school buses unloading kids when we arrived, the exhibits were not overrun or crowded, and it either worked to hear a presentation with a group, or we'd just go to another stop with no group currently there. Either way, you got interesting history vignettes, often from people who seemed to have grad student-level grasp of 18th, 19th, & early 20th century historical contexts, and the kids saw enough eye candy to keep them entertained.
We ate at the Machine Shop and then came back to the grounds, making an all day affair.
Jen LIAFM
I came here as a kid & now I've brought my kids here to experience it. They loved it just as much as I did! Listening to the townsfolk really made history come alive & brought back memories of on the farm.
Latish Williams
This was an awesome day trip and very educational for my 11 year old daughter and her classmates the only draw back was there's a lot of walking out in the heat and sun so if possible carry an umbrella to shield from the sun and drink lots of water
Emily Dukat
So glad we planned to stop here on our vacation! It was a great history lesson for my daughter. We loved interacting with the staff and learning so much along every stop!
Amanda Bieber
This was a great place when I was younger, but its looking a little rough lately. Something is definitely wrong in the Wallace Center, it has an odd smell. I hope they get the funds to repair to its greatness.
Lynne Sutherland
It is very fun you can see what it is like to be in 1850, 1750, 1950
Johnson Legal PLLC
The best place to visit in Des Moines. See our past. See what farming used to be because its gone.
Sheryl J Brooks
Fun to explore and each building has Reinactor to give history and answer questions. They need keep cafe open later than 2pm for late arrivals until closing time though
Joanne Svendsen
One of my favorite places.
Robert Atzeni
My niece remembered this whenv she was younger about 9 now that she's a mommy of 3 wanted me to come with so she could go back in time. I was busy keeping up but the looks of aaahhh from her kids was overwhelming. Busy day picnic lunch and everyone sleeped all the way home so I know they were sent and overjoyed. Hats off to Living History Farms
Jamie Amble
Cool place to take the family. Wear some comfortable shoes and take a walk back in time to simpler days. Make sure you grab some lemon and gum drops from the gift shop.
james myers
An excellent place to visit if you like history and antiquities. People "interpreters" are at key locations throughout the different buildings to explain and participate in actual life like circumstances for the era they are perpetrating.
Alec Maas
Lots of buildings. Good tour. They are improving much even now. Best part is the indoor experts in each building. Loved it. Great for all ages.
Irina Fedorova
Everyone was super friendly and informative. It's a different kind of experience. Fun to see how things used to look. Very peaceful.
Marcus Pitts
Very uniquely Iowan. Great place to educate children about farming history and what it was like living in the past. Definitely worth doing at least once.
ken neeld
Great time to step back in time, knowing presenters can explain there exhibit very well. Lunch on the grounds. Fun for all ages.
Brandon Johnson
We wished we had more time before naptime! We loved the history and the kids loved the animals and interaction with the printing press, school teacher, baking, drug store (grounding cinnamon and live leeches), and more!
Dennis Grimm
It was really educational. Showed you how farm's were run in the 1700, 1800, 1900's. Showed equipment used and what lifestyle was like. If you like history you will enjoy your time here.
FJD07
It was very fun and educational! All my class mates and I loved it!! It's a great place to spend time with the family!
Larry Juncker Jr
I have been to LHF many times over the years and love it every time. It is great to get a chance to see the history of Iowa. It makes it much easier for kids to learn.
Blue J
Our family enjoys The Living History Farms. The open space of the fields for the kids to laugh, play and learn is why we try to go every year.
Judi Webb
The light show was the best, especially being set to music. Enjoyed it very much with our grandsons.
Donna Miller
I have driven past this place for years on our trips back and forth between northern MN and southern MO. I will most definitely be back to explore more. Great place for children to have an adventure.
Vahid Ellig
Bigger and better than I expected going in. Quite a lot of time and attention to detail went in to the setup. People are very knowledgeable about their area. The live demos impressive and thourough.
Karen Nablo
Our traditions and history will only be lost if we fail to share it with the next generation; Living History Farms provides an interactive environment to do so.
David Frohman
They host the Turkey pardoned by the governor here. There's a lot too see, a lot of tours to take, activities to take part in, and a summer camp for kids that meets here. You can also upgrade your iPad/tablet with a chalk tablet!
I got stung by a wasp on the 1900's farm, though. So be aware that animals are dangerous.
And the pigs in the 1800's farm will try to slobber on you! They stand at the fence and go "Blurrbrbrbr" while shaking their heads and spraying slobber everywhere!
Josh D. Staple
I have always loved this place. Even though it is not as big as some of the museum complexes I have been to. It is nice to have this gem in central Iowa.
curt Jones
Great relaxing day traveling back through history. Family friendly... kids can learn what life was like 150+ years ago.
Terry Beek
Interesting, but way too much walking between areas. At my advanced age and the heat, I was not that impressed. I believe Pioneer Village in Minden, NE is much better.
Scott Bujak
Very well set up. Reenactors were very well informed. Unfortunately the weather kind of cut our visit short.
Kay Whipple
Very interactive and educational for children and adults alike. Have had a membership for years and enjoy their Photography Day in the fall.
Josh E.
A great place for the whole family to check out! You get to learn about history while exploring the great state of Iowa. Step back in time at Living History Farms!
Abigail Benz
This is a great family-friendly place to visit. They have some really fun events going on year round for children and adults alike.
Scott Lawrence
Went for a great car show but will come back for regular experience. Nice area
Shallay Booker
Hit and miss. The old town has a lot of artifacts and buildings with blacksmith and printshop. The farms are not really working farms, have things for show but not all accurate. Some staff knowledgeable some not. Weekdays there are day camps there so you get to watch them do stuff you can't, like play in the streams and work in the blacksmith shop.
Terri Reynolds
We had a great time. We got a delicious apple pie and a strawberry rhubarb pie.
Cyndi Shield
A great look into the past. Everyone was very informative and new their history well. A fun place for young and older as well.
Jason Dahl
Great place to visit and see farming from over one hundred years ago. Be sure to check out Flynn Manor, a really neat period home.
Jason Es
it was a lot of fun. The staff is very knowledgeable. Please bring your shoes because you'll get your steps in .
Dennis Pelletier
$16 for seniors, $17 for adults
Neil Franzen
Travel back in time to experience life out on the prairie over the course of 300 years of history. Jump on the tractor ride to start at the beginning, and work your way back toward the present. LHF, along with the Blank Park Zoo and Science Center, is part of the Tri Membership plan, which is a great annual pass program for families.
levi kroese
Everybody knows so much information and is willing to help. Great staff fun to see the old ways of doing things.
Rochelle
