Reviews of Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens

The Hampton-Preston Garden is one of the best places for a lunch stroll in Columbia. It’s full of beautiful vegetation and has a host of different paths that are excellent if you have young children. Make sure to check out the greenhouse, it’s one of the most beautiful structures in Columbia! The Boyd Foundation did an excellent job restoring these historic grounds so that everyone can enjoy!

We enjoyed our visit to the grounds. They do not have daily hours, only certain days. Lots of information on the evils of slavery to be found here. Slightly more difficult to find however, is what kind of tree it is that we're looking at. It would be great if they could cover both at least. I'm sure that had we been able to visit on a day that they are open we would have learned more. Grateful that the grounds are open to view even if the tours don't run every day.

This is a dream wedding and event location. The grounds are plentiful, and the main lawn is preset with tent anchors. You should definitely stop by and see their new greenhouse. It comes with a catering kitchen that has its own separate entrance/exit.

Absolutely stunning. Went there for an after party after an Historic Columbia event. Gardens are in bloom and well maintained. The new greenhouse structure is beautiful and would be perfect for an event space in chillier weather.
Kyle
Fantastic grounds. Definitely worth a visit. Would be a great spot for a picnic

This is my favorite of the four Historic Columbia House Tours. It's the biggest, grandest house with the most beautiful gardens, I really enjoyed my tour. My volunteer guide was super chatty and fun, I liked her a lot! Make sure to walk around the gardens and read all the signs. The memorial pavilion to the right is really cool. All tours start at the Robert Mills gift shop, and then you walk across the street.

The gardens are newly replanted based on historic records and include many native species. Absolutely beautiful place to visit and be inspired. The plants are well marked and the signage is informative. The site includes water features.

I went to an outside concert that was sponsored by the Richland County Public Library. There were people in lawn chairs, food trucks and libations. The local musical artists provided the soundtrack for a good time had by many. What an awesome way to enjoy the evening. The grounds were beautiful.

This is a beautiful and well-maintained property. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable on the history of the property and the stories of the people who lived there. She was very passionate about the subject and pleasantly engaging with the tour group. Highly recommend for an educating and entertaining view of Columbia history

The Christmas candle-light tour was well-done and very informative. It's a beautiful house. The historical society has done a great job of preservation and upkeep for future generations. The gardens have always been interesting to me, too.

Hampton-Preston has a lot of crazy history behind it. Historic Columbia puts on a fantastic tour that emphasizes the enslaved people of the property. They were very well versed in the history of the property and provided a lot of fun information that I won't give away cause you need to go on your own and listen to them. The property itself is beautiful and I don't doubt that if you're into history it's a great place to visit.

A beautifully restored glimpse into pre - Civil War Columbia. This house was spared when the city burned. It's architecture and period rooms give visitors a unique window into history.

I once lived in Columbia historic district where my home was only around 10 minutes walk to those historic buildings such as the Hampton Mansion. Travellers can join a guided tour provided by Historic Columbia to visit this mansion, Robert Mills house and Woodrow family house, etc, although the price is a little high, about $10 for each place. All these places are well preserved. Moreover, those stories from the past are awaiting their listeners.
