Reviews of The Richard H. Driehaus Museum
A very beautiful example from the guild era. The home was originally completed in 1883. It was refurbished and is right downtown. We spent one hour viewing this magnificent home. You wouldn't be disappointed. Even the public bathroom inside the home is true to the period.
An incredible experience! We took the guided, highlights tour with Erick and we are so happy we did (as opposed to self guided). All the staff were friendly and enthusiastic, but our guide was exceptional. He was knowledgeable and excited to answer the group’s questions. The house has such an interesting history and some honestly jaw-dropping pieces inside. Tour is about an hour. Discounts available to students.
A wonderful place to visit to learn about Chicago architecture.
Great customer service. Very nice gift shop (so tempting to go back for a beautiful antique necklace I saw there!)
A great place to take guests visiting Chicago to.
fantastic gilded age mansion - recommend guided tour. Now featuring a Louis Sullivan/Richard Nickel exhibit. Park at the Row garage two blocks south, you get a $15 parking credit from the museum if you bring the parking garage ticket to show them
This place is a gem and a must see museum in Chicago. It explores themes in the architecture of Louis Sullivan and the photography by Richard Nickel that documented the destruction of many of Adler & Sullivan’s most important Chicago buildings. There are many art collections of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Absolutely beautiful!!!
I have long wanted to get into this museum. As soon as I found out about it, today I visited it and am incredibly happy. Charges this place with positive energy, I advise everyone. This museum is next to the Dominican Church see its timetable the place is also intriguing.
Beautiful first floor! The dome is amazing. I’ve been here multiple times and the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. Literally 2 blocks or less from the Starbucks reserve. Pretty decent gift shop!
Really beautiful museum/house with incredibly kind and knowledgeable staff. Take your time moving through to catch all the beautiful details of the pieces in the rooms.
Top 5 places in Chicago to see! Incredible history and restoration work. Very unique pieces of art and sculpture! From the floors to the ceilings this building was made with the highest level of care and craftsmanship. The domed stained glass ceiling is a mind blowing feat of skill and every single room has an aspect that will make you gawk at the amount of wealth the original owners must have had at the turn of the 20th century!
A great stop during a weekend in Chicago. The museum is filled with architectural and design gems including a Tiffany glass ceiling, marble staircase, and floor to ceiling tiled wall treatments. Every nook and cranny is a step back in time and offers something interesting from a design perspective. The guides were very knowledgeable about the history of the home. Nothing can be touched so it's not the kind of place I would take my kids to see but I really enjoyed seeing it with a couple of friends who appreciated the historical and artistic experience.
Beautiful architecture and artwork definitely recommend seeing it the staff were friendly and attentive highly recommend spending an hour or two exploring.
This is an incredible place. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The house itself is a work of art. Almost every square foot of the building is a call back to a time of complete craftsmanship.
Really loved our visit to this beautiful mansion. It was so nice to see it dressed up for Christmas. The app made it so easy to find facts about the house and its belongings.
It's a Beautiful Museum,,was a house back in the late 1800's early 1900's it's a Hidden Gem..❤️😃 …
Definitely one of the best ways to explore the architectural and design culture of Chicago. this house has furniture in fantastic shape for it's age and is overall decorated beautifully. If you're a Louis Tiffany fan (art glass, not jewelry) then this place is for you. I've never seen so many beautiful Tiffany lamps in one place! Highly recommend for locals and tourists alike.
We love small museums which sometimes are even more interesting than the major ones. This is an architectural marvel, a mansion that was fortunately saved from the wrecking process. The home is decorated with genuine art nouveau furnishings which adds to the beauty but the house itself is just incredible. All of this, gives a picture of what it was like to live in the Great Mansions of Chicago during the Golden age.
What a terrific house to visit. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was left wanting a little more and I hope they can restore some of the servant areas in the future that are only handled with some photographs right now. A terrific way to spend an hour or two in Chicago. I recommend it.
Definitely worth a visit, I've visited palaces in Europe and this home was like a small slice of decadence in Chicago. It was 3 floors, and the designs on the wall and woodwork was immaculate. The lady at the front desk was very helpful, good visit overall.
Nice interior with wooden showcases, different tiles designs on the walls, different model chandeliers in all floors.
If you love Tiffany, architecture and Art Nouveau this is the place for you. Stunning, detailed and beauty are the 3 words I would use to describe my visit today. Staff was very friendly, knowledgable and helpful.
Three floors of amazing architecture and artwork was well worth the entry fee in NH book.
GORGEOUS gilded age. Definitely recommend the tour, very informative. Plus they have exhibits going on in the rooms on second/third floor. Afternoon well spent.
We made arrangements for a tour online from our hotel. It was easy and turned out to be a great way to spend a cold morning. This home is a rarely experienced slice of Americana. What a wonderful and beautiful gift to the city that this is so well preserved. A big plus is that after the tour we were free to return to the rooms at our own leisure. Another positive afdition, photographs are allowed. The guides were friendly and informative. We moved along at a decent pace but there was always time for questions. So many details were explained. There is an elevator and some rooms have seating.
I have never written a google review before, and I may be taking a professional risk by posting this--but when I saw the discrepancy between the perfect 5 star google ratings and the many, many 2 star Glassdoor employee reviews involving horror stories about the management I felt like I had to say something, because I feel visitors should still be aware of what goes on within an institution regardless of its success.
I will start off by saying I was initially super interested in employment here. Though filled with excitement when I saw they were hiring, I still did my research. I have /never/ changed my mind so fast about wanting a job after reading employee reviews.
I cannot believe the gaslighting, gossip by managers, lack of HR accountability, and overall emotional manipulation that has been going on within the walls of this museum. It is extremely disappointing considering the beauty & potential it has. There is no reason for employees to feel unsafe and patronized in the same way that some fast food service workers feel.
Yes, this is a wonderful museum, but ultimately if they don't make some changes to management and treat their employees right, there will be no people left to maintain its foundation, which already seems to be crumbling. Museums are about embracing, inspiring, and uplifting others, and that includes its own employees.
Exceptional historical mansion and good highlights tour (heavily recommended if you visit, it's 25$ all included).
Moreover, the Tiffany studios exhibition was astounding (September 2019) and the Shonibare mannequins were interesting too.
Great stuff at the shop, pricey as you would expect.
Loved the Eternal Light exhibit. The staff is very friendly. The home is exquisite. Love Tiffany. The wall coverings throughout are intricate and amazing. I cannot believe I have not been here sooner.
it was so amazing, they were having a tiffany glass exhibit at the same time so I received double the exhibit. I am a history buff that has been completely absorbed in the guilded age for the past 3 years so to see it in all its glory through the house was amazing.
Great slice of the gilded age in Chicago. Beautiful details. Worth the admission, ($25 with tour) and the guided tour was informative and well delivered. The Tiffany exhibit was in when we visited. Beautiful venue for the exhibit. If you love Chicago, highly recommend.
This is a beautifully restored house in a posh neighborhood of Chicago. You can walk around with a paid admission, but I would recommend the guided tour. It is a deal at $5 and you learn a ton from the docent. There are also rotating exhibits on throughout the museum. This was my first time here but it won't be my last!
If you’re into history, art, or architecture this is a great find. Heck even if you’re not your mind is sure to be captivated while touring this museum and former residence. Be sure to check out the details in each room including the wood floors and fireplace mantels. Each are unique and inspired by exotic locations across the world. Bring your student ID for a great deal. They have rotating exhibits year round that don’t disappoint and keep us going back time after time.
An incredible well maintained museum to tour if you want a glimpse of affluent life in a different era. The design, level of detail and craftsmanship are breathtaking. Every room had its distinct purpose.
An interesting museum with a lovely collection of Tiffany glass. There are guided tours, but I chose to wander around on my own. Each room you go in has stunning features, and the more you look, the more you see. It's a beautiful house.
If you enjoy taking a trip back in time and discovering beautiful design and details then I can highly recommend the museum! The staff are very helpful and friendly, although we never took a tour they were still willing to answer questions and show us around some secret places we'd never have discovered alone! Everywhere you look there is a feast of details to be discovered! Reserve a few hours to amble slowly and enjoy the journey.
Driehaus Museum - Get Ready to Be Astonished
The Driehaus Museum is a hidden gem. The twenty-five thousand square foot, gilded-age home of Samuel Mayo Nickerson was built after the great Chicago fire of 1871. It is decorated in the Aesthetic Style - which was a design movement advocating more is more. The eclectic ornamentation throughout the house is almost overwhelming, but in a good way. We paid $20 for admission and $5 more for a docent tour - definitely worth the money. We came to Chicago to experience its art and architecture. This was, without a doubt, a highlight of our trip.
A beautiful and austentacious house full of Tiffany Lamps and glass. Beautiful paneling , floors, furniture. It was the best of the best, an American castle. The artwork is a glimpse of a past time. The personality of the players is well portrayed. A little known nugget that is worth your time. A nice little gift shop on the top floor. The volunteers are very helpful. Nice Afternoon.
Magnificent house interior well worth the time to visit. The level of details and finishes is stunning. A nice break from the downtown shopping area. Entry price a bit steep at $20 but this is not your usual museum either - all is superbly kept.
Beautiful home rich with history and gorgeous collection of art. The tiled walls are amazing!!
I have an abiding fascination with old, extravagant houses, so this place was great for me. The admission price ($20) felt a bit high though. I read every word of every sign, and stared at every bit of every thing for far longer than my companions could tolerate and had to catch up with them later, and still only managed to spend an hour and a half or so. We went because they were having a showing of artifacts from the Great Exhibition, and I loved everything they had, but it was also on a smaller scale than I had hoped. Still, everything that was there was great. I loved the colors and craziness of the art exhibits set against the stoic grandness of the architecture.
Do not leave town without seeing this exquisite example of "turn of the century opulence"
A most interesting introduction to the Guilded Age. Added bonus were the Tiffany stained glass windows on display. Highly recommend a visit.
really awesome living museum, only takes 45 min to get through
Probably the most beautiful place in downtown Chicago. The thick walls and beautiful old interior just sooths. You can take a break from the daily rut. Also the shop upstairs has wonderful products.
Stunning mansion and Museum. A step back in time. A must see by yourself. You have the choice of exploring alone or with a guide.
This museum was like stepping back in time in downtown Chicago. It was well worth the cost of admission. I especially liked the 1893 World's Fair collection.
Fantastic building, furnishings, tile, tiffany and period lighting. Current exposition of tiffany stained glass is outstanding!
Incredible home, mind blowing craftsmanship, and a chance to experience how the ultra-elite lived at the turn of the 19th century Chicago. Intriguing art exhibition as well.
I really liked this place. I felt like I was stepping back in time. I could almost see Mr Nickerson coming home and opening the doors to his home. It was spooky in some ways for me, but I liked it and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Chicago, worth a visit!
Great Gilded Age house. If you are a fan of architecture and design, you'll have a fun time walking through the 3 stories of this house that is situated between high rises.
A must see museum in Chicago. Get the guided tour as they’ll tell you a lot about the history of the house the area and Chicago in general.
Very cool place. If your interested in historical architecture this is a really neat place to see. It also has lots of Driehaus's personal collection throughout. The guided tour was nice and the girl was very passionate and knowledgeable about the history at the museum.
Amazing historical museum in the heart of Chicago. You really get a feel for what life was like for the lives of wealthy Chigaoans in the late 1800s gilded age.
Great small museum with beautiful architecture and paintings. However it was pretty expensive just for the small size and limited pieces versus attending the institute of arts. In addition, the heat was incredible - I didn't know you could get hot during the winter run Chicago. We were sweating even after we coat checked our items
Overall, I would recommend to anyone visiting Chicago. It's a great hidden away gem
Excellent restoration of an elegant late 19th century mansion. Truly a gilded age gem with an outstanding decorative arts collection. An opulent step back in time.
Great place to visit to see the opulence of a bygone era. I would expect these days that there might be a little attention paid to the working class servants, but there was almost none. Servant quarters were off limits to visitation and only one tiny afterthought stand with postcard-sized pictures of the staff quarters were on display. Mansions like this housed the privileged 1 percent who were privileged on the backs of working people, so the 99 percent deserve some due.
Exquisite quality of craftsmanship. A bit overdone, less is more. Class and money are not always related...
Do suggest a visit.
A beautiful house that has been restored to much of its gilded age glory. Worth a morning visit for sure. Half price tickets for teachers!
Tremendous work of restoration. 18th century living for the rich portrayed in every room and piece of furniture.
Beautiful house. It is a small museum, but every single detail of the house, stained glass, tile, woodwork, etc. is magnificent. Definitely worth the visit.
Great concert for St Patrick’s Day featuring traditional Irish Aires with Paddy Homan and Friends. Beautiful old home now a museum with incredible hardwood floors. So worth the trip.
Amazing!! The docents and volunteers are very helpful and knowledgeable. They even gave us pointers for other points of interest to visit
Beautifully restored Mansion in the heart of downtown Chicago! Highly recommend the guided tour.
This is a great, short visit. The mansion is really spectacular and I just loved all of the fine woodwork and stone work. The descriptions of each room and the furnishings were very detailed and interesting. The historical value of this place in unquestioned and all of the staff were extremely helpful and engaging.
This old Chicago mansion was really interesting to explore. Huge beautiful interior with exhibits from the owner's art collection in each room. Three floors to roam, or take the self guided tour. May not be interesting for younger kids, and I don't remember seeing an elevator.
The beauty, the opulence are beyond description. You just have to go and see it. Our docent was very knowledgeable. This museum is located in the heart of the Gold Coast, convenient to many other locations of interest, including the Mag Mile and Rush Street.
I lived in Chicago for a good part of my life, and I cannot believe I haven't visited the Driehaus Museum until this week. It is a wonderful place to visit. A great view into Chicago during the Gilded Age.
Always a favorite visit. They are extremely careful of pandemic precautions and social distancing. The best part is this is one person’s collection, so there is a unity to the motifs and exquisite decorations and furnishings. The staff, mostly volunteers, are exceptionally gracious, kind well-informed and welcoming. The hidden Gilded Age safety features are impressive. The architecture has been restored and would itself be worth a visit. Mr. Driehaus’ personal collection of (usually Tiffany) stained glass is far too vast to have on display at once and are delightful. The artworks and household objects on display make a unity that looks as if a (rather wealthy) family still lives there. This is the opposite of a sterile, white-walled museum.
My favorite time to visit is when they have era-appropriate Christmas decorations. Their special exhibitions are thoughtfully chose. The gift shop has unusual pieces. It is quiet and most delightful and a marvelous gift to the City.
Nice small collection where I had higher expectations. Not comparable to Frick collection in NYC or Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia though.
This mansion is incredible! The staff are welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. Put this on your "must see" list the next time you are planning to be in Chicago.
If you love the Gilded Age you have to come here. Great tours and friendly staff
A gem in the middle of cement jungle! A big mansion with amazing decos.
Not as grand as the Newport mansions but worth an hour or so.
Fantastic example of a mansion from the gilded age in Chicago. Authentic in all details. It's like stepping back in time to the 1890's.
Incredible! The best museum experience we had in Chicago. Flawlessly restored home with a powerful history and exceptional staff.
A beautiful, fascinating example of Chicago's Gilded Age. Ask for a tour with Jeanne S. She's an excellent docent!
Exquisite look into the past. Phenomenal Craftsmanship. Worth the trip.
Completely worth your time. A beautiful museum.
It took me longer to go through here than the Institute of Modern Art! Absolutely stunning!
Always an informative, interesting, educational event at the lovely Driehaus and Murphy Auditorium!
The mansion is spectacular and impeccably maintained. It's like stepping back in time.
Beautifully restored mansion from the Gilded Age. Welcoming professional staff. Excellent audio tour.
There are much many more worth places to visit in Chicago. This building is just a Cesar salad mixture of Arts from all over the world. Persian rugs, Italian marbles, Chinese caldelies and etc.
The mansion was really cool but the art was boring.
Enlightening tour..
Really made the place come alive with the details added by the guide.
Such an interesting place! Highly recommend the guided tour!
Amazing work of art. The whole house was sodetailed with so many unique decorating and pieces. We paid extra for the tour. Well worth it.
Driehaus museum is a hidden gem right in middle of downtown. I am still surprised I live 2 block from this place and still took me forever to explore this place. The house is a master piece from the 20th century. I love the souvenir store as their collection is so vintage and amazing.
Amazing mansion with an informative tour.
Such a lovely house to explore. I love natural and carved wood and every room in this house had a different parquet floor. Senior and other discounts
Always amazing. Beautiful mansion and a wonderful collection of antiques and Tiffany glass.
This is a great historical activity right in the middle of Streeterville. A beautiful building, and doesn't take too long to tour if you're not in the mood to museum for hours.
Absolutely wonderful museum, with an absolute feast for the eyes! The tour is well worth doing, and then spend another hour or so walking through the house and see everything. The Tiffany glass is particularly wonderful. When I was there they had a poster exhibition, which was out of this world. I took more pictures here than anywhere else in Chicago. What a great treasure!
A glorious monument to the gilded age.
Go on a weekday. You’ll have the place to yourself. The tour guide Jeanne was great.
What a little gem! If you enjoy the American Gilded Age art and architecture, you will adore this wonderful restored mansion house. With exhibits that change throughout the year, there is always something fabulous to see. The restoration is magnificent. The guides are professional and knowledgeable. Stay as long as you like. Gift shop is really fun as well, with little treasures and a sizable book selection that focuses on the Gilded Age.
17 kinds of marble. Like a palace.
This museum could be so much more than it is. The house is beautiful, and worth seeing! The stories and history behind it are wonderful. We paid extra for the tour with a guide, and that's where it really fell flat (although it could have just been our guide). While the tour of the first floor had some interesting tidbits about the design and function of the rooms, the second floor has little to no furniture in it, and instead is full of art and posters (which is not what we went to see). Our guide spent way too much time talking about each poster and artist while we would have preferred to hear more about the house. The things he did say about the house that were interesting were all printed on small sign stands, so save the extra money and give yourself the tour!
Highly recommend! This museum was beautiful. What a lovely place!
We took a private tour as a birthday celebration. The docent was excellent, the mansion museum is fascinating and I am looking forward to the return of their special exhibits.
FAVORITE PLACE IN CHICAGO. Cannot recommend this enough. I loved everything in here. A lot of history and everything is very very beautiful. The tour was awesome and the whole building is beautiful. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend.
This is a fantastic work that is carefully restored to give a window into the world of home architecture and interiors in the Gilded Age.
Like a mini-Biltmore, the home itself is a masterwork of many designs that were, at the time, married into a single piece, and the staff were both friendly and helpful in filling in any gaps that weren't covered by the available information.
When I revisit Chicago with friends, I'll be taking them here.
This is a beautifully restored house in a posh neighborhood of Chicago. You can walk around with a paid admission, but I would recommend the guided tour. It is a deal and you learn a ton from the docent. There are also rotating exhibits throughout the museum.
Perhaps the most beautiful, historically significant way to spend a few hours in Chicago. The Museum is actually a restored mansion from the late 19th century that houses an extensive collection of decorative arts. Tours and audio guides are available. Each of the three floors are staffed by knowledgeable guides. The gift shop itself is worth an extended visit. A fee is required for entrance, so be sure to allow enough time to become thoroughly immersed in this place from another time.
Beautiful house, well worth visiting.
From top to bottom, the Dreihus is a great step back in Chicago history!
This was probably the best tour we took while in Chicago. This is a truly amazing home. Great decor and home. Wonderful history. Amazing Tiffany Lamps and architecture. This tour should not be missed. Just of Michigan Ave. Great Staff...
Beautiful house. Really enjoyed our time there.
Enjoyed the history, loved the art program.
For me, this museum had been an overlooked treasure until recently. I've driven past it for years and was unaware that it was a trip back in time to the opulent Gilded Age. It's filled with beautifully preserved architecture, Tiffany Lamps and art. Definitely worth a visit.
This is an amazing, little known museum near the Gold Coast. You can see the entire museum in 60-90 minutes. The little peak into life for the rich in the Gilded Age is worth the price of admission, but there are also rotating exhibitions. The Tiffany glass is stupendous.
If you love glimpses into old Chicago, the Driehaus is a must. The woodwork is amazing. The stained glass is to die for. The marble staircases transport one to a bygone era. Although few of the original furnishing remain, the replacements still give one a strong sense of the craftsmanship and opulence available to the wealthiest members of the Chicago elite. Take a guided tour to maximize the experience. One visit will not be enough.
Absolutely beautiful. The level of detail in the rooms is far beyond what is seen outside anything but the most elaborate estates. The entire property is tasteful and amazingly detailed. If you like what you see in pictures of this house online, you will love your visit.
While this is called a museum (there is artwork, and they do special exhibitions), you are mostly seeing the house. It is of course large (25,000 sq. ft., or about 10x the size of a normal house), but it is still on a human scale (unlike the grand residential palaces of the world). As such, you only need 45-90 minutes to see it, depending on your pace.
Few other notes: staff was extraordinary friendly, they have recently expanded their hours (used to be by appointment or more limited hours), there is an audio tour (do it, there are not a lot of signs/details in the rooms), the high price of admission is worth it, the location is great (if you are a tourist downtown, you will be very close).
Gorgeous example of golden era life style. Oppulent
Fantastic look into the extravagant mansions of the early 1900’s. We visited in December before Christmas and the property was decorated with beautiful holiday decorations. I recommend pairing this tour with a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s house in Garfield built at a similar time.
I was so fortunate to view the Downton Abbey exhibit on its very last day, Sunday May 29. The mansion is so beautifully restored and all of the costumes were lovely. The "tour" was well done and very easy to follow. I read all of the information about the mansion and the costumes. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because of the security fellow at the entrance. A less welcoming representative would be hard to find. I am all about following the rules, of course, but his attitude verges on rude. He seemed to find great satisfaction in putting the guests in their place. The museum would be smart to find a better person for their "front door".
One of my favorite things to do in Chicago. This museum is gorgeous - a fully furnished house from the Folded Age, with rotating exhibits on the top floor. I've visited twice already, for an exhibit on jewelry and the Downton Abbey costume exhibit. Everything is so beautiful, especially the stained glass dome in the library!
Would love to give it 5 stars because it is drop dead gorgeous. The rooms are stunning, and currently there are a lot of Tiffany pieces spread throughout the museum. My only problem is it takes probably 45 minutes to go through completely, and at $20 a head it's a little spendy for the size and time.
We did not opt for the tour unfortunately because we did see a tour group go through and it seemed very in depth, so I would recommend signing up for the tour.
Worth doing if you've done the other Chicago museums and looking for something a little different.
I was thinking it'd be more like the Molly Brown House in Denver but grander, so I admit it was a little underwhelming. However, the story of how Driehaus came in and gave so much to the restoration to preserve a sense of the time and the effort clearly given to the task is astounding. Loved the art, loved the tour's highlights of the house's architectural details, and loved the Gilded Age portraiture on display. If you're not into stuff like John Singer Sargent though, not sure if you'll have a great time.
The highlight of our trip! We happened upon this place and we were quickly welcomed in. The staff was as friendly as they were knowledgeable. We also took the tour and definitely don't miss out on that. We had many of our questions answered and it left a lasting mark on the rest of our visit. Lovely!
If you only had time for 1 museum visit In Chicago then make it this one. It perfectly evokes the “gilded age” of Chicagoan society, when a family’s wealth was ostentatiously displayed in the furnishings and decor of the home.
Stunning detail in the carved wainscoting and ceiling ornamentation. Exquisite furnishings such as tables, lamps, fireplaces - all by master craftsmen and representing the very best of that age.
Part of the museum is taken up with an interesting history of chair design.
Must see for anyone who enjoys historic homes. Go to admire the leaded glass dome, the intricate wood mouldings, the textured ceramic tiles, sculptures, paintings and art objets. The special exhibits are always worth seeing. Tours are an additional $5 per person over general admission, which is $20. Slightly lower student and senior rates. Metered parking on-street or there are several nearby parking garages. The museum is a short walk from the Red line Chicago Avenue stop.
An unexpected museum. We never knew this museum was hidden away but we are glad we stopped in. They offer a self tour and guided tour. We opted for the self tour and roamed around. It was a fascinating step back in time. The architecture and preservation was incredible. There is a lot to see and so much to learn in one visit. Definitely recommend a stop in if you're out of town but especially if you live in the city.
Almost overwhelming in its ornateness and opulence, the house is a monument to excess. Yet the qualities of all the decorative arts on display transcend that. It's worth seeing as a subject for contemplating social justice (however you feel about it) and also if you have interest, as a collector (or wannabe collector) or historian of beaux arts gilded age design and craft.
Extremely knowledgeable tour guide, in our case at least.
Beautiful exhibit of Tiffany glass when we were there. Pay for the docent lead tour, it is worth the extra $5. Excellent history of the home, the architecture and craftsmanship, the people and the town.
This was an awesome architectural museum experience. A little pricey (tickets are $15 I believe with extra for audio tour if you like), but a great location to see one of the best preserved Gilded Age Mansions and artifacts I've ever seen, and especially on the North side of Chicago.
There is a large collection of Tiffany Glassware and artwork for viewing since the houses study had a gorgeous Tiffany Glass dome. I'd highly recommend it for anyone in their area who is into late 1800's architecture and history (around the Columbian Exposition in Chicago)
We had a wonderful time touring this amazing building. Such beautiful rooms filled with wondrous furnishings one can only be in awe of. Enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Audrey at the admission desk was so friendly, great representation of the place.
Exuberant Victorian home, great collection of art and Tiffany glass.
The ONLY, and I mean, ONLY reason why I gave Nightlife a 4 instead of a 5 star is because I went late and half the museum was closed by the time I got there, so I cannot write a full review. I stayed mainly at the aquarium, and even that was AMAZING! And only for the low price of $10 to get in. Genuinely exquisite!
House is amazing. The process of restoration even more-so. The current exhibitions are a distraction that take away from the home's history. Certainly linger on your own - the tour does not enhance the experience. The home was in the center of a dynamic time in Chicago's coming of age - yet the events associated with the home were not offered; instead the exhibition is confusing in it's relationship to the home and frankly, serve other socially popular agendas.
Interesting piece of history. An okay amount of historical decor and furnishings to reflect and depict the wealth of Richard H. Driehaus and the concepts held by the wealthy of that time period. The $20 for regular adult admission may bar many (including locals) from exploring this museum.
So much awe. Lots of wonder. Honestly, most people don't REALLY get it. They say wow, or nice, or I don't have this at home ... Chuckles.
Walk in. Just look. Let your senses feel almost a different world. This place was a family home, people bustled through it with important lives, the realty is an extension of their souls, if not the people that owned it, then the people who cared for it, leaving to the people that care for it now.
It's hard to vision this house how it'd have been used, seeing it a museum now - invent your world to imagine yourself there. So many nooks. Amazing layout.
This place is very special. I'm very lucky to have experienced how intensely it resonated with me.
I've toured many old mansions, but this one is remarkable for its condition. It seems like it is as immaculate as the day the original owners moved in. Often there are interesting exhibits in addition to the house tour. We enjoyed the retrospective of comics from Punch magazine.
A hidden gem of a museum, and a nice size to spend an hour or two. The guided tour is worthwhile, and the narration helps bring the house and family to life beyond the list of possessions.
The Tiffany glass exhibit (through June 29, 2014) was lovely, and I appreciated the objects differently in the context of a fine home.
My Detroit Institute of Arts membership got us a discounted entry.
I had around an hour to kill and this museum was right around the corner. I am so happy I went! While at first I thought the price was a little high for such a tiny location ($10 for a student), the quality of the exhibit was wonderful. The building is well intact and each room contains almost all original furnishings with a lot of historical information about the times. The art exhibit going on when I went was the art nouveau French posters like chat Noir, and that was also incredible. The staff is overwhelmingly helpful, there is a free coat check, and the gift shop has all sorts of cool souvenirs. Would recommend to my chicago local friends.
I wish more original detail was present. They cut out a lot of the actual historical accoutrements for an art installation.
I do appreciate the photography of the art installation, but the statues took away the immersion of the historical experience.
Worth a trip once
Architects/Artists/Historians rejoice! This place is absolutely stunning. One of a kind. I am serious when I say DO THE GUIDED TOUR, it’s so worth it and you’ll learn a lot! Carl was our tour guide and he really knew his stuff! My husband and I will be back for certain!
This home was built like a fireproof vault, shortly after the Chicago fire. It is located in an area where most of the homes were razed to make room for high rises. The stewards of this home clearly cherished its value, and it appears to have been exceptionally well-maintained. They did recently invest in achemical or laser process to clean the soot off the once blackened exterior. The interior woods, tiles, and granite are exquisite. Additionally, there is an extensive Tiffany collection. If you love history, wealth, and treasured art, this is a must see.
Very good place to see how the uber rich spent money on their homes around the turn of the 20th century. Fascinating decor, a great tour guide who looked like Teddy Roosevelt, and a rich history made this place a great stop on our tour of Chicago. I haven't seen so much marble outside of Rome... and that blew my mind. The tour guide made good use of context and history to bring the house alive. Definitely would recommend you visit.
A heavily decorated late 1800s/ early 1900s mansion near the red line L stop Chicago. Senior admission is $15. General admission $20. $5 for the conducted tour. Lots of history. At present there is a portrait display which includes a Sargent Singer which was a nice surprise.
Cute place. I visited this location on a whim, I was walking pass and saw people in line. I noticed signage indicating it was free so I waited in line and I'm happy I did. I believe it was a part of an architecture tour of buildings throughout the city for the weekend. It was pleasant, architecture isn't as "grand" in my opinion. However, it is worth seeing.
Great museum if you’re looking for a little break from the city. Lots of history and beautiful architecture.
Interesting home. The exhibit (World's Fair) was very very small. Less than 10 items. I would say if you are interested in seeing the actual house it's worth it, but be wary paying admission if you are really only interested in the exhibit.
The museum is great for the dec arts lover. The restoration brings all the finishes back to fresh and vibrant as they would have been originally. The bedrooms and sitting rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floor are exhibition space but most of the main floor rooms are furnished in period style with tiffany and other pieces from the driehaus collection. Cool side note the exterior was cleaned with laser the first in the country to be cleaned this way in its entirety.
A jewel hidden in the middle of Chicago. It is a nice pause form the busy city life as you get to explore the history of Chicago. The mansion is very well kept, and is beautiful. The staff are super nice and are more than happy to answer your questions. So make sure to ask away!
Loved it. If you are a fan of the Gilded Age or just want to be seriously impressed by fine crafts...This visit is a must. A nice walk around the Magnificent Mile neighborhood.
Interior of this building is gorgeous. Rooms and furniture are perfectly preserved, the stained glass windows are beautiful, and the art is amazing. Worth a trip if you're into antiques and art.
Omg!! One of the most stunning houses I have ever been too and I have been to a lot! The details are amazing... gorgeous house, highly recommend!
Amazing that this building has survived all these years. A historical architectural marker of s time when the display of opulence was unbounded. With s modern day eye, the original owner could have used someone with an eye towards "do we really need moorish and Chinese in the same small room". Well worth the money. Our arrival time did not allow for the guided tour but I imagine there are a lot more details to be gleaned in selecting that option.
One beef, they added an "a" to Frederick Law Olmsted's name on one of their display signs .
I love to visit this museum. Recently I took a tour through historical McCormickville neighborhood guided by Sally Sexton Kalmbach. I did not realize there were any hidden obscure unknown spots left right in the heart of River North. It turned out there is still something knew and worth exploring. Studio building and its history told by Sally are especially fascinating to me!
Beautiful museum - house is a marvel, very well curated and the crafted jewellery exhibition was brilliant. I do think its a little over priced - but not a waste of money - I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!
Incredible museum, the guided tour well worth the additional fee. I was stunned by all the elaborate detail inside the house, so much more than you can imagine just by observing the outside.
Tours are offered daily & are informative.
The museum is clear of dust, thank you!
Staff is welcoming and will give you directions or suggestions about the immediate area if you're trying to go see/do/eat someplace after visiting the museum.
What a beautiful and ornate mini castle of a museum. I will certainly make time to take a visit inside next time I'm in Chicago. It looks amazing!
Beautiful preserved Industrial mansion with special art & history exhibits. Exhibits may not be huge but pieces are usually significant. On street parking is often available. Each room was an example of an architectural style at their time.
This was an interesting site to visit. The staff at the museum were very helpful, attentive, and enthusiastic to be at work. The museum is not huge, however, it was enough to take about an hour to go through. For most, I think I would recommend the guided tour.
This little hidden gem is featuring modern art in a truly unique Gilded Age setting that explores thought provoking themes of cultural appropriation, wealth and power. Make sure to get someone to show you all the great details that make the place so special so you don't miss out!
Wish I could live here! Just purely amazing!
Lovely house with many interesting features. Since I am old and tire easily I wished for places to sit during the tour. Staff was accommodating and let me use an elevator.
Beautiful home, beautifully restored. Well worth a visit!
This is a gem in Chicago. An opulent incredibly well maintained historical mansion with beaux Arte decore and tiffany everywhere and a grand staircase that Downton Abbey grabs will love. It currently audio has a very interesting exhibit about chair architecture. With one of the best souvenir shops in the city on the top floor stocked with exquisite and unique keep sakes for a visit to Chicago
I loved this place but found one fault. I came with a small tour. Apparently, our group did not pay for a docent tour of the house, which I did not know. I asked a couple of questions and received stern faced answers. I walked too near a docent led tour and was scolded. A smarter group would have offered our group an upcharge to have a docent even though our group leader declined since time may not have permitted.
The way our tour was set up, we met at Dries House for an introduction, went on a walking tour of the neighborhood, then returned to tour the mansion. Lunch was scheduled before the tour of the mansion. I returned with a closed box and was twice scolded for the presence of food. The box was never opened; I was merely carrying because we had no access to our bus to store it. It turns out, I could leave it in coat check. But it took an unkind exchange to get that information.
I didn't care to be chewed out and treated rudely.
Outstanding experience. Fine example of Belle Epoch architecture. Amazing insight into the lifestyle of the wealthy of the 1880's A must see.
Beautiful gilded age mansion with lots of Tiffany lamps and stained glass. Well worth a visit to see how the "other half" (or more accurately, the other .1%) lived.
Luxurious home, well restored and refurnished. Informative audioguide will benefit from more "side paths" to provide in depth detail for those interested in restoration techniques, furniture history, or how the house was built. Thanks are due Mr. Driehaus for opening the house to public view.
Fascinating architecture, dense detail, history living in front of your eyes. Loved this museum. We found it by accident filling out activities for our last day in town. To think we might have missed this!!
We took the tour. The docent was very knowledgeable. The building is beautiful. The decorations are beautiful. This is my second time there. I look forward to my next time.
HISTORIC PLACE, GREAT OUTLOOK ON HISTORY FROM POINT OF THIS MANTION. amazing guided tours bring you back to Victorian era. A spot to come to and deep back into 1900...time machine
Immaculately restored gilded age mansion filled with old world craftmenship. .
Very interesting and beautiful home, with beautiful staircase and story about each room...the library was my favorite! They include original pictures of how the interiors looked at one time.
Overwhelming yet telling showcase of extreme wealth from the 19th century.
Amazing artistry and skill displayed in woodworking, ceramics, textiles, and stone.
A must see if you are interested in History.
This place is off the charts opulent, fabulous! Over the top restoration! Outstanding display of antiques in there period setting. Strongly recommend visiting this place!!
Very small but a must see if you're in the area. The exhibits rotate but it was Tiffany heavy when we were there and very beautiful.
A must see for anyone in Chicago. If you live here you must see it as well it's a wonderful Chicago historic place with super antiques. Also see what they are incorporating, like the history of chairs, the la trec posters and more.
My wife and I were looking for something different to do while in Chicago, and found this wonderful gem. We had a great time imagining what it must have been like to live in such a grand home. Well worth the time.
Anne was an amazing tour guide! The house was spectacular & I definitely recommend to anyone who is interested in history, architecture, design! Simply stunning!
Great architecture and design from an interesting time in Chicago's history. It's easy to walk through in a couple of hours. It's well run and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
Nice private tour! Enjoyed a piece of Chicago history.
The admission fee $70 isn't cheap in my opinion. An hour or two should can go through all three floors Museum. Not for little kids.
Gorgeous home with a rich history. I recommend booking a guide, but you will learn a lot reading from the plaques.
A very pleasant surprise. Did not know what to expect. I saw the Sacred Stained Glass Windows of Louis Comfort Tiffany - beautiful mosaics.
The collection is impressive but the whole exposition you can see there is only on the 1st floor.
absolutely worth the price of admission. the mansion itself is worth the visit, and the collection on display is equally amazing. not sure but i believe it's closed on Mondays.
Amzingly restored home. Impressive. The Tiffany displays were incredible. Nice way to spend an hour or two in an exquisite environment.
The detail in the Woodwork in this place is amazing. Lots of great craftsmanship on display on every square inch of the museum if you happen to pay attention to that kind of stuff.
Wonderful Guilded Home in Chicago. Take the tour. It is worth the extra $5. Enjoy
Very cool house museum. We did the audio tour and it was perfect. We could go through the house at our own pace. Absolutely beautiful!
History wonderful
We went there for a murder mystery dinner and couldn’t have recommended it more. The mansion is so impressive and seems set as it would have been in the era. The mystery dinner itself was a blast.
Very cool museum. Took us only 20 minutes to get through the entire house. Absolutely beautiful on the inside and the guides were very friendly
I loved it. I wish the lighting was better in of the rooms.
A really beautiful museum with the house and rotating exhibits. Enjoyed the tour.
Go see it! Beautiful history
Great example of Art Nouveau, unmatched in the US. Only museum houses in Barcelona, Spain and Riga, Latvia are as good examples. So good!
A wonderful place a visit for history education
Beautiful space!! Nice exhibits!
What a great piece of Chicago History. Do yourself a favor and come see this place!
Beautiful mansion. Great story behind museum.
Beautiful, historic home with rotating exhibits. Not expansive, but a lovely experience that's a world away from nearby Michigan Avenue.
Great little museum. Maybe a little pricey for what it is but enjoyed learning about the house and the neighborhood. Nice collection of Tiffany glass pieces.
A complete surprise -- astounding design and craftsmanship. (Of course it's outrageous that a private party could afford a palace like this when brilliantly skilled artisans could barely get by.)
What a beautiful surprise in central Chicago. Amazing home from the Gilded Age in perfect condition. I've lived in Chicago for 15 years and wish I had discovered this earlier.
Marvelous house with so many delicate antiques. It's a standing history itself. If you love the art, you will definitely enjoy this place.
loved it! our tour was great and super informative. the tour guides was very knowledgeable. it's a beautiful home worth visiting. great value.

Super impressive. If you haven't been, you owe it to yourself to spend at least a couple hours immersed in early Chicago Gilded Age history.
Tiffany glass lamps were wonderful. The colors exhibited in the glass were worth the side trip

The interior of the house was amazing!
Wonderful place to observe what real wealth was back in the late 1800's. Worth your time.
Perfect almost off the beaten path and so glad I didn't miss this gem of a museum with architectural details for miles and Tiffany lamps that are out of this world.
Excellent museum. Beautifully restored. My tour group had high praise for the visit.
One of the most impressive homes you will ever see, not to mention the fabulous Tiffany glas collection. Very friendly staff.
The era of the architecture was amazing along with the decor... it left me speechless seeing the quality of how everything was made during that time.

Beautiful, interesting, well curated. 4 stars is not a criticism. A peaceful Oasis in a busy City.
Loved this place! Didn't do the tour, but the house and its decor alone is more than worth it.
Interesting place albeit expensive to walk through. The gift shop talked up by an influencer was nothing special.
An absolutely gorgeous tribute to a bygone era that sadly did not persist aesthetically.
Beautiful house. Self guided tour had plenty of information, and a lot to look at. Guides were happy to answer questions.
