Reviews of National Museum of Mexican Art
Mikael Attal
An eclectic and unique mix of artifacts spanning more than two millenia and including references to issues around immigration, identity, workers rights and the Chicago community. Stunning and moving art. Nice shop. I strongly recommend a visit if you have a spare one or two hours (or more) in Chicago. It is a short walk from 18th Station on the pink line. And it is free!
Michelle Foy
A beautiful art museum that is both fascinating, colorful and educating! The museum has street parking around it as well as its own pay parking lot that isn’t expensive. Museum entry is FREE but you can make a donation. The museum is tastefully done, very well organized in sections and displays many art mediums (painting, sculptures, glass mosaics, pottery etc…). The history of Mexico is explained simply for everyone to understand and differentiate their culture from other Hispanic origins. We really enjoyed the day of the dead items, Diego Rivera sketch and Frida Kahlo wing exhibits. The gift store was amazing and had so many interesting hand made items and crafts. There is so much you can learn in this museum and I can’t wait to go back again to visit and broaden my knowledge of Mexico!
Fernando Fuentes
Great small museum of Mexican artifacts. Went on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in April. There is a pay parking lot but we were able to find free parking on street. There were nice examples of art and art works. There also was a very nice section about Frida kahlo. Lots of her art and items about her life. Very impressive. Plus it was free.
Paul Moreno
I went as part of a tour for my university class. Our tour guide, Ama, was very professional and courteous. Staff at the front desk were also very nice and welcoming. We chose the one day of the year that the museum would be overflowing with visitors. XD Luckily, our guide made us feel like we were the only ones there. :D
I'd totally go back on my own time to check everything out in detail. Wonderful accessibility for those with physical disabilities too. Overall, I had a blast! :D
Vanessa Correa
A wonderful place! Learned a lot and so glad it exists. Parking lot is small, but still helpful. Definitely plan to go to one of their events the next time I am in Chicago.
Orlando Ansell-Vicens
Very neat mesuem. Lots to walk through and see. Worth a trip, I would like to see a few interactive elements in the future as you can tell there is a lot of detail and passion here. For a free museum of its size-very much appreciated. Great gift shop even if a little expensive.
Edith Guadarrama
Love how beautiful this museum is, so colorful so much history, arts of all varieties. Make this a stop it is small but it's so worth it. When I stopped by I got to see 3 of their Exhibits. And they have such a cute gift shop!!
Lea D'alessio

Gorgeous display of mexican artist's art!
The dia de los muertos exhibit was the highlight. Would definitely recommend to any residents and visitors.
Jerry Garcia
It’s free!
Excellent settings and professional information
They have several rooms well kept
They really project how beautiful and rich is Mexico in history and culture
David Hong
Wow! First if all this museum is free so you can donate only if you want. There is a nice permanent collection as well as rotating collections. I really like the one with Covid 19 and ancestor art.
chad svastisalee
National Museum of Mexican Art is a wonderful place to bring the family. A great place to learn about the very talented Mexican artists and see pieces not usually displayed. We went specifically for the Dia de Los Muertos exhibit and was not disappointed. The powerful homage to those affected and grieving due the COVid-19 pandemic is captured beautifully in the artworks. There are several galleries and a theatre to explore so plan on spending an hour a half, more if you stop into the gift shop. Support the Museum as this is truly only one of very few Free Admission Museums.
Liliana Pascuzzi
I really enjoyed this free gem. The neighborhood had a lot of Mexican street to vendors selling elote, aguas frescas and fruit cups and I loved it. Bring cash so you can support local. I traveled via train on a Friday afternoon. The staff points you to the sign in tablet and from there in it's super easy to see the exhibit rooms. They had a seamlessly way about them and the art and description was in English and Spanish. The staff was super friendly. I'll come again.
Adriana Sida
This is my favorite museum, not just because I’m Mexican but because they’re always providing us with new events and art exhibits and experiences and everyone is welcomed!
Andrew Schaefer
Fantastic museum! Lots to see, beautiful art, very welcoming staff and well laid out. You’ve got to check out the gift shop too!
Ramon Gz
Is a nice little museum and right now they have the Dia de Muertos (day of the death) exposition
Killah B
Took my parents to the museum on their first ever Chicago visit. There was a Frida Kahlo exhibit. They enjoyed it. It wasn’t too busy.
Anthony Lopez
Definitely a place to visit if you’re in Chicago! It’s a free museum that is surrounded by a great community park. The art itself blends history into it to help teach you about Mexican culture! Definitely will come back to visit
Joshua Roy
Great experience and very educational. Even the gift shop had so many great items
Chris Van Dunk (Saintlycvd)
Bring your friends. Great exhibits about the Mexican community in Chicago. Bit of history. A bit of now. Beautiful pieces.
Jacob Y
Loved this place! There was a variety of pieces to see from throughout history, including all sorts of different mediums. The descriptions were informative and helped to improve each experience. Although it was a little confusing where to start, once you walk through a door, each exhibit is easy to make your way through. I particularly enjoyed “La leyenda de Popocatépetl e Iztaccíhuatl” and the souped-up lawnmower! We spent over an hour here. It’s also worth mentioning that their central air made the experience very cool and comfortable.
Mary Medrano
Went to the Day of the dead ball, and I was super impressed! I will definitely be there again next year!
Magda Pecsenye
What an excellent, well-curated collection. I wasn't really expecting much because the building isn't that big, but they have really quality, representative pieces that have been curated cleverly. The interpretation is also top-notch, so you can really understand what you're looking at and why it's significant. You can see the entire museum in about 90 minutes, and it's totally worth the time. I would recommend this over the Art Institute or any of the bigger museums in Chicago in terms of uniqueness, specificity to Chicago, and ease of parking and accessing the museum. Will come back again and again.
Abhishek Kumar Sharma
Fantastic exhibits and it's totally free! They're pretty strict with time however.
Hayley Davis
Such a cool museum. It took us probably an hour and a half to get though everything including the gift shop. Lots of cool art and the gift shop has loads of great handmade items. Entry is free and they have a parking lot connected to the museum that is paid but it only cost $2 for an hour. It was quite cold inside for anyone who cares about that (we went in September).
Melissa M
Wonderful, small museum full of beautiful pieces of art. It took me a little over an hour to get through the entire space.
Khaulah Naima Nuruddin
This is a wonderful museum to visit. The works in the permanent collection are smartly curated to share Mexican history and the contemporary Mexican experience. The current solo exhibit of Carmen Chami's paintings is beautiful figurative work. Be sure to walk the neighborhood to experience the beautiful murals and mosaics. Get a paleta and enjoy!
Bill Simon
Great museum! Wonderful art across Mexican history, I learned a lot, too. There was a great exhibition of Frida Kahlo's personal collection of photographs.
Beatriz Vazquez
We love to attend for the Day of the Dead, it brings back so many memories from our childhood.
Penelope Villarreal
It was awesome, there were to many beautiful pieces of art and very friendly staff. The gift shop was filled with so many goodies I would've loved to bought it all. They don't charge an entrance fee but you can leave a donation in there donation box. It's well worth the visit and leave a good donation.
Mercedes Fuentes
Amazing, love all their events especially for the little ones! I've attended a lot and will continue. Their very cheap new parking lot is helpful and their staff is always friendly, courteous and will go beyond to answer any questions I have. I always recommend their events and fast as some sell out like crazy! I love that it's a free museum and am obsessed with the Sor Juana festival!
Meredith Taylor
This FREE museum was well worth the hour we spent there. It's pretty small, but there's a lot to look at and read. Even with many students on a field trip in the museum, it wasn't too crowded and we were able to see everything we wanted to see. Be sure to also make time to get authentic Mexican tacos at a restaurant nearby and drive around to see the murals and street art in the area.
Bethany Crisp
As a Mexican-American, this became one of my favorite museums. Great exhibits, very friendly staff (you can't take water in but they let you leave it at the front desk and get it back as you leave). The gift shop has lots of great things so if you're a Frida fan, plan on leaving with something from the gift shop.
Rey Davila
Great historic culture. Beautiful scenery. Awesome art pieces. You must experience
Mariam Othman
Wonderful little museum with Mexican antiques. went on a lovely September Saturday afternoon. Although there is a paid parking lot, we were fortunate to find free street parking. There were some lovely artworks and art examples. A lovely portion about Frida Kahlo was also included. a lot of her art and personal items. incredibly impressive! It was also free.
Kwin Raymer
Donation based entry fee. It is small but full of interesting exhibits. It will make a fun short trip. The gift shop is impressive too.
Heather Estrada
Worthwhile museum, easy to get through in about an hour. My spouse and I really enjoyed this place, and we learned a lot. The staff was great. It's a free museum. And the gift shop is an amazing place to purchase both traditional and modern items for all ages - toys, decor, art, stationary, t-shirts, candy, books, kids stuff, puzzles, cute Selena items, and all things Frida Kahlo. We definitely recommend this place!
lupita Serrano
Absolutely Beautiful!! I learned a lot and my 5 yr old Niece Angela was so curios about the art and murals she actually had a lot of questions and was ver well behaved( totally shocking )
Nalinibhavani Emani
Lovely, small, Amazing museum , friendly Staff
Sabrina Mendoza
Absolutely beautiful place. Free admission. They have different rooms, some permanent exhibits and they just had the Day of the Dead exhibit which is extraordinary. The store has a lot of amazing trinkets, clothes, and traditional Mexican decor and stuff. Highly recommend this place. Usually spend like 1.5–2 hours there.
Bianca
Wonderful experience, something both my mother and I can enjoy. There is a little backstory to each artwork but there didn't seem to be any tour guides.
Big Papa Marquez
They have some interesting altars for the Day of the Dead and Mexican arts and crafts some beautiful drawings and paintings.
The gift shop they have lots of Frida Kahlo items and crafts and from Mexico and a lot of things postcards posters.
Miguel Sarmiento
I had a excellent experience visiting this Mexican Art Museum. The expositions were great and very interesting. The place is nice, well maintained and the staff very attentive. Additionaly, the museum has some espacious areas for special events, a great plus. If you like the Latin, Maya or Aztec culture, this is a place to visit.
Victor Wang
Quite an amazing museum to immerse yourself in Mexican Art. For lovers of art and history alike, plenty of opportunities to learn something new or revel in the massive number of artifacts. Especially make sure to stop by during the month of October when they have the Dia de los Muertos exhibit. Absolutely free museum means there’s no excuse not to stop by and check them out. Close to public transportation options and they even offer bag check for travelers from far away.
Caroline López-Martínez
Donation-based Mexican/Chicanx culture in the Pilsen neighborhood. Their store sells great items (including customized sugar skulls in the Fall). Highly recommend a visit to this gem!
Christina
Inspirational and amazing art work! I love looking at the culture and the emotion that went into this art work. This museum is free but after looking st the exhibit you should definitely make a donation. The gift shop has a vast amount of great mexican gifts from pottery, to posters, to jewerly. All around a great place to spend an afternoon. Truley worth going to see.
Meli Sanchez
This was the 1st time my family and I went to the National Museum of Mexican Art and I have to say that it was such a wonderful experience. The museum isn't huge but the amount of art that is inside makes it feel enormous! The amount of history that is there and the information that is shared is not only about Mexican art but of the Pilsen area itself.
The admission to the museum is free but make sure that you leave a donation.
If you have a few hours, take the trip to the museum and allow yourself the time to take a journey.
Salim Makhlouf
Loved this gem in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. It's a must stop to understand and celebrate the true melting pot of Mexican culture. And it's all free!
Erin Sorellino
I came to the museum based on recommendation and to check it out for a field trip. Everything the reviews say, is true. The museum is incredible.
I loved the temporary exhibit and felt that even middle school students could relate to the meaning and inspiration behind Luis Tapia's sculptures.
While reading the reviews, I discovered that they had Day of the Dead events in late October. I cannot wait to come back to experience that with my sons another day.
munchin oncuppycakes
Small and beautiful artwork. I agree on the comments below about the service guards. The gift shop is moderate price considering you are supporting the artist, teen program and the free museum. Pictures below are form day of dead exhibition. And 2 are from the gift shop!!
K Z
Visited the museum in November and got to see their Day of the Dead altars. The museum is small but the art is beautiful; an affirmation of Mexican, Latino, and Hispanic identity by capturing history and cultural experience. I especially love the exhibits that champion the working-class experience. Lovely place to visit! Great activities throughout the year!
Michaela Washington
Loved the museum and the Dia de Los muertos exhibit. It's a free museum but please donate. Lot of history and culture shared here. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
J Rodas
Cool little spot for art. There's a pretty dark section that I didn't like but maybe I just didn't get the big picture behind that specific art. Over all a good place to visit. One of the staff members got a little snappy on us because weren't wearing our backpacks in front of us.....but everyone else was friendly.
Norma Real-Carmona
Great exhibit. Friendly staff. Beautiful art. Check it out you will not be disappointed and while in the neighborhood check out one of the local restaurants for some Mexican fare.
Amaranth Sander
Absolutely amazing museum! We didn’t have time to see every single piece, but what we saw was so great. We went to the Frida Kahlo photo exhibit and it was so well curated. I also really enjoyed the Ruben Aguirre collection. I would love to go back and explore all of it.
Miguel Angel
As a member I've enjoyed different events throughout the year including holiday market. Check their calendar of events or stop by to enjoy the galleries. They recently added a parking lot next to the museum and it is inexpensive. They also have a store so you can take some items home, from t-shirts to products for your home, posters, mugs and more.
Stop by during Day of the Death to learn more about it.
Melissa
I have a better appreciation for Mexican and Chicano history, culture, and art after visiting the National Museum of Mexican Art. I like that the exhibits did not shy away from political activism and self-critique. A great mix of "older" and modern art.
Sy Guzman
Love! I came here to pass a Saturday afternoon and had a positive experience! It was FREE to enter the museum, the staff was courteous and answered my questions about the art work on display. The museum gift shop was beautiful and worth a look!
Thanks for reading my review!
¡Viva Mexico!
Teresita Pineda
The museum was beautiful. The artwork was inspiring.
Vanessa Silva
Smallish museum...only about 4 rooms. But, the art in the rooms is spaced out so it still seems small in terms of what's inside. I went through in about 30 minutes but it seems like there are tours which I might see about next time. The gift shop seems like there's more in there than in the whole museum.
Orest Schur
This is definitely one of the best museums I ever visited. It is free, not sure about parking, I parked around the corner. So there is a great Frida Kahlo photos exposition. The regular exposition is very impressive.
Jose Cardenas
Great place to kill some time or to spend hours. A lot of wonderful/meaningful art with detailed descriptions. Right next to a beautiful neighborhood with a few murals on the side of houses.
Spiro
Very beautiful. Fascinating permanent exhibits. A very rich history, explained well in the signage. Also Day of the Dead ofrendas were moving and beautiful.
James Cure
Nice staff and very nice museum.
Vittorio Carli
One of the best places to visit in the Pilsen/Little Village area. I have been going there for decades and the overall highlight was probably the Remedios Varo exhibit. The museum is fairly small but the art and events are uniformly high quality. The customers are interesting too; I once met a bunch of steam punks there and got some good photos of them. Some of my old friends or acquaintances like the late Carlos Cortez and Nicole Maraquin have pieces there which are worth seeing.
Rebeca Salas
As a Mexican American, I found this museum amazingly representative of our community. It has both older, more typical art and newer, local, social-justice-oriented art. Loved it! I've gone twice and will definitely go back when I get the chance.
Stephanie Sanchez
Absolutely love this museum!!! So much history to see through art; as well as current dillemas (within the neighborhood) are very well expressed. Every piece is beautiful and meaningful!
Erin Myover
Absolutely breathtaking and provocative art. The collections are very diverse in scope and a feast for the eyes. I learned so much about Mexican art history and contemporary art!
Jocelyn Lopez
Every year I like to come and visit the museum. I like bringing the kids to enjoy the alters that are displayed every year during the month of October. The museum it’s self is not very large but they have plenty of things for you to see. Make sure you pay a visit to there gift shop they have a lot of cool stuff to look at and best of all the museum is free with a suggested donation.
Patricia Holloway
This museum is absolutely fabulous! A wonderful place to take your art class, Spanish class or both! I think kids of all ages would love it.
Mohannad
A cute and small museum, full of interesting and lively pieces. It was really nice to know it is free and open to the public. They have a special exhibit with Francesco Toledo which was beautiful, unique, and wonderful. It was nice to see the transition of art style through history, giving you a true feel for Mexican art.
Maria Rojas
Tucked away in a wonderful neighborhood with so much history it is free to the public. Enjoy the exhibits and then the local food.
Oleg P
The museum is not very big, but worth the visit! Very interesting collection of latin american art, specifically modern art. In addition, there is huge mural wall anong the 16yh street, 2 blocks away from the museum.
Gabriela Brizuela
Free museum. Wonderful permanent collections. Rotating collections are always amazing. The store is beautiful. Lots of cool events.
Stef Casiano
This place is pretty cool and definitely illustrates the Mexican history and culture of the people both in Mexico and Chicago. Some exhibit rooms were unavailable to be visited within the facility.
Priya T
What a little gem! I learnt so much about the beautiful culture and history. Definitely a must-do! Parking on site. Nearby restaurants are great for lunch as well. Worth spending immersive time.
Jacqueline Araujo
Great festival, very organized. Colorful family oriented. Music & dance. Very happy day celebrating Dia de los Muertos
Nelson Grihalde
Amazing little museum tucked away in an up and coming neighborhood known for its ethnic latino cuisine and amazing murals.
Jay Sekora
Very welcoming and informative. Some of the art is spectacular, and all of it is fascinating. The space itself harmonizes well with the exhibits. Plan on a morning or an afternoon there — it's not huge, but it's very rewarding.
Mike Walker
Went as a chaperone for my daughter's class field trip a few years ago. It was an amazing experience. The exhibits were so interesting, I had a hard time paying attention to the kids. We are planning to go back soon.
Michelle
Great array of art. Careful in the gift shop
Andrew Brickell
This little gem is well worth a visit, the collection is small but fascinating.
Kate Truscello
This place is truly a gem. I went to visit during Día de los Muertos and the ofrendas and artwork were moving, informative, and stunning. I cannot wait to go back and visit many times to see other art installations. A must see for visitors and residents alike!

A wonderful gem in the city. A perfect place to wile away an afternoon and enjoy exhibits. A perfect size so you do not get tired and rush thru. Bonus its free. Also a nice museum shop inside. Street parking can be found but be careful of permit parking only areas.
Marlon M
Very cool exhibits with art from a range of different artists. My favorite was the tricked out lawn mower. Tis the season for Dia de los muertos or day of the dead. I learned a bunch about the custom and how it is celebrated. Very clean museum and the best part is that it is free admission!
Rebecca Corona
I always love coming here and seeing the wonderful and powerful artwork! I highly recommend coming in and check it out.
Kennda Burt
If you haven't gone recently, this is a great time to go. They have a never before seen exhibit of Frido Kahlo photography, and it's amazing.

Orestis Papaioannou
Probably my favorite art museum in Chicago! Stunning art, and a decent sized collection for a free museum. Worth checking out!
Angie Bello
Beautiful showcase of Mexican artistry and culture. Great finds in the gift shop.
Elizabeth Crisostomo
I love this place! I would like to remind people who come visit to have the same respect as when they go to other museums. I’ve seen too many patrons think this is their home, trying to eat and drink in here and think that they can have their children run around freely and have free child care especially White folks. Please be mindful of your privilege cause it really shows. Especially as this is a cultural space so have the same decency. Please respect the staff and workers as it is their job to take care of the art and the facilities. Don’t be touching stuff don’t be taking pics in areas your aren’t supposed to. If you have a backpack put it on your front because again this is a MUSEUM and could bump the art. It’s such a gift and privilege to have access to a space like this, especially cause it’s free to everyone! So please support their efforts, events and be RESPECTFUL.
Scott Otis
Super cool museum that you can really get familiar with over an afternoon.
Jason Venegas
Great place for events. The go-to place for those wanting a "Latino" learning experience and a chance to donate and give to the organization.
chandkilla
Covid hours are not regular hours. Make sure not to walk in with only 10minutes to view the gallery. The permanent exhibit has a lot of classic pieces 😍
William (JR) Lacey IV
Was great to learn more about Mexican culture through art. Learned some stories behind some works that I've never seen before.
Bob Zuley
I enjoy my frequent visits to the museum but especially for the Dia De Los Muertos exhibits.

Meg Leah
I loved going to this museum. It was very informative. But I had a tour guide as well. I loved the art as well.
Bon Weber
Lovely museum with good overview of Mexican art. Free of charge. Would prefer a little less Frida Kahlo and a bit more variety as Mexico has more to offer than Kahlo...
victoria hernandez

I was pleasantly surprised. It doesnt look to big from the outside but it opens up really well inside. There's couple of different galleries showcasing Mexican art and culture. It's a mix of Mexican,Mexican American art prices. Everything from classic to modern art.
Spencer Nord
This museum is really a must see if you live in Chicago. The fact that it is free and all that you learn when you are there, it is definitely worth it. I was really a fan of their Dia de los Muertos exhibit and particularly enjoyed the portion on immigration. It states facts that need to be stated and portrays so much through the art of the subject. Please go!
Harald Ringbauer
Great museum that offers several exhibits that dive into Mexican culture. Some great pieces of art there!
Angeli S
Wow! Amazing place and it’s FREE! In addition to the amazing museum, the Pilsen neighborhood is also a work of art.

This museum is great about the Mexica believes and traditions. Bring family and friends to remember our traditions. It will help to pass over the upcoming generations the belives and traditions as our ancestors did for us, who had lived in this land and continent for thousands and thousands of years.
Annie Racicot-Snyder

You have until 8/7 to see the Frieda Kahlo Photograph Exhibit, it's a fascinating experience. Although the museum is free to all, donations are helpful and welcomed. Don't forget to stop by the gift shop.
Chris
Cool place to visit, but the staff circling around while you are trying to read information on the art is annoying. Relax I am not going to take anything or do anything to the art.
John Martine
Not my first visit. I was there for the Frieda Kahlo photo exhibit. The museum us well designed and it's free.
sterling williams
Very Breath taking displays of cultural art work.

Simply amazing. This FREE Museum showcases artworks dating back centuries from the Aztec, Mixtec and other cultures to the contemporary artists of today. While the Museum is small its contents are culturally rich.

Ladies bathroom sinks water pressure shoots all over sink & person! Clean & good customer service. Went to Selena Tribute. Bar was pitiful. One margarita flavor 😒 Put snacks around, balloons to play with, fun party stuff …
Thomas O'Brien
I've seen museums around the world and to me this is one of the best. Some stunning artwork. And it really drives home the importance of Mexican American and Mexican art. A great attraction in the wonderful Pilsen neighborhood.
Devon Holmes
There is so much meaningful art exhibits here that range from children's works to works of really well known artists. You will not be bored walking through the three sections of different kinds of art and you also learn something, I certainly did. Will visit again!
Elston Flowers
If you are interested in Mexican-american culture and art, you need to visit this museum.
Andres Pinto
Best free museum in Chicago and honestly one of the best art museums I've seen. Very small collection but seriously beautiful. I was amazed at the talent on display here and loved the detailed descriptions on the artists and on each peice. I learned so much. I plan to return any time I want to take someone on a creative date or when family from out of town is here to visit. I will tell everyone I can about this museum

Matt Nottling
Absolutely awesome! Galleries are very well laid out and easy to work through. Narratives explaining the pieces are in English and Spanish. Plan an hour or two to work through the museum. Admission is free and worth the friendly donation.

Rhiannon Simmons
Incredible permanent collection, and the special exhibition was brilliant, thought provoking and educational. Would recommend for anyone
Alex
Small museum with a cool giftshop. I really enjoyed the art galleries.
Lex Pachi
This place is very underrated. I highly recommend coming here at least yearly. They have some great pieces with a lot of hidden meaning. They also have many programs they host here which makes them such a good host.
Kathleen Mathews
Fabulous free museum with a uniquely Chicago/Mexico approach to art.
It requires masks which made me feel safe. No more than 10 people were allowed in their marvelous gift shop, another wonderful safety feature.
I am a member because I value their mission so much.
Sandra Perez
Small but full. The only bad part is parking but there is public transportation available so there's that. Gift shop is amazing.
Vince Baca
This was truly my favorite part of my trip to Chicago from a Chicano from the San Francisco bay area little village and Pilsen riding my divy down w18th was being home.... To see our people In other cities then California or the southwest is awesome.... I felt the same way when I was in Atlanta
Isaiah Perez
Very Nice museum! Tons of really amazing pieces that I enjoyed with the family

Robin Stone
Nice museum!! And it's free.
Anthony C.
A little out of the way from downtown, but a very nice museum. Probably spent about 45 minutes to see everything. And a very well stocked gift shop. Thanks!
S B
Great exhibitions, lots to see, very interesting and friendly staff.
Silvia Ortiz Gómez
A fascinating museum with incredibly-well selected pieces that tell the stories of immigration, mestizaje, colonization, pride, and conflict of the Mexican, Chicanx, and Mexican-American experience. It's vibrant, challenging, and great. One of the coolest museums I've ever been to and the fact it's free just says a lot about this place's commitment to share great artists and stories with everyone.
Lucy Wagendorf
Large selection of art. There was a group of kids with a guide giving an amazing amount of information about the artist and their work. Don't pass this one up. There is a parking lot but you have to pay the meter box.
Jim Arnold
This place has a nice collection of mexican art. A lot of pieces are focused on identity, history, and culture.
The focus on social justice was interesting, however I was surprised there was not more content on current conditions in Mexico and here in the US.
The Anxious Mom
Amazing gallery with a lot of wonderful history and information. I learned so much
Atlas Quest
I was able to learn more about the Latino community and about my Hispanic background. All around a fantastic experience for all ages and a great spot for a first date.
Ronnie Vanna
Every year we go to see the dia de los muertos, this particular Sunday it was extremely busy, isn't very spacious, so the capacity for the galleries to get crowded happens extremely fast, with the fact that we are still not out of this pandemic I would have much appreciated if there were limited capacities within them use at a certain time. Beyond that the staff is extremely helpful extremely patient and the museum always provides some of the best cultural art that you can see in the city.
Lance Hassan
Here for a fund raiser, great space, wonderful exhibits.
Michael Lancaster
It is a small Museum in the Pilsen area they need to advertise more and have more interactive displays for the children you know. The Major display of the museum was that of the work of Frida Kohala.
Tommy Schuberth
one of the best museums in the city, easily. go here instead of going to the art institute, I promise you’ll have a more fulfilling experience and meet some cool people
George Proano
Awesome place to visit and admire the art.
Douglas Capps
This is a great museum! We were in Chicago to see the Frida Exhibit, so we decided to see some more Mexican Art. This museum has a great collection. Lots of diverse art from different time periods.
The gift shop is excellent as well. Go to the 5 Rabanitos Restaurant a few blocks away while in area. Easy walk from museum. Great food. The chicken tamal was super delicious!
Richard Bell
I couldn't really hear out guide but this place is always beautiful.
Laura Collins
This is a really interesting museum and it’s wonderful that admission is free as well! We got a sneak peek of the Tectonic Recognitions and Frida Kahlo Photo Exhibits and they are both fantastic!
Polina Pleshak
I loved this museum! Very colorful art!
Juana Ruiz
Omg!!!! Sooo much fun. Selena tribute! I visited the museum but not for an AMAZING show!! Thank you XOXO
Love Drag!
LUIS FLORES
Get down here as often as we can. Free. But would gladly pay to enter for the exhibits.
eric riordan
Great experience. A bit small but free. Loved the Frida pictures exhibit
Clinton Isham
Was kind of disappointed because the lighting was very poor and I had to keep bending down just to look at some of the pieces. Love the museum and everything in it but improvements are in much needed
Maribelle Gomez
Great museum, available to everyone, free admission
Cameron Colby
Do yourself a favor and go here! From downtown it's a quick ride on the Pink line and a casual stroll through the eclectic and beautiful mural-filled streets of Pilsen. Admission is free. Bonus if you go during late October to early December to see the Dìa de los muertos ofrendas!
gloria dominguez
The National Museum is beautiful, and free to the public. It is surrounded by a spacious park, filled with the laughter and joy of children. The street vendors and local shops and restaurants seal the deal for me!
Jillian Eichel
This museum of Mexican Art is the kind of place that makes you want to be a chicano/a. Walking through the exhibit spaces I feel awed, humbled, and drawn to do nothing but appreciate, love, learn from, and be inspired by the mexican and chicano culture. The pieces are brilliant, intelligent, educatory, and inspiring.
Hector Perez
Great art and free. Kind of small and some of the rooms felt like they were too big to have just a few items. Wish the gift shop wasn't so dang pricy. Lots of cool stuff to want to purchase but dang that much for an ornament?
papayoga
Great experience to know Mexicans in the US more.
melissarad
Lots of artwork, I wasnt able to get through in the hour our group had. Make sure to give yourself more time. Cool stuff in the gift shop too, but you'd better have a lot of money with you.
Just attended their Day of the Dead exhibit and had the pleasure of a guided tour with some High School art students and fellow instructors. I was very impressed and the tour guide packed in a ton of information that was mostly new to me. Make sure you check it out!
Kinsey Major
Smaller than expected but great use of space!

Great place to visit to enjoy Mexican art and culture. Galleries are laid out with a good flowing manner. Special exhibits rotate frequently. Gift shop is very good. Nice variety of special events and activities. Members enjoy good benefits. I visit about every other month.
Mary Lemmer
Wonderful museum with fantastic exhibits!
Ayiana Ramirez
It's a beautiful museum that discusses and shows the beauty and story of Mexican culture. Came here on a field trip and had a tour guide walk us though the art. It's very colorful, the exhibits are eye catching, and you'll leave with a little bit more knowledge. Just know that you're not allowed food or drink inside, for obvious reasons.
Holly Moore
I really love this little museum that lies in the heart of Pilsen. They have great exhibits on both contemporary issues as well as Mexican traditional and cultural folk art. They also had a great section on old religious art and statues. The gift shop is another plus where you can purchase many great items. The staff is very friendly and helpful; however, parking around the area is limited as it is in a residential neighborhood of Pilsen. Fortunately, it is close to the 18th Street Pink Line, and for me, within walking distance. I highly recommend this little gem, though for the time being, it is closed due to the pandemic.
Daniela Cohen-Dawson
Great place to see, free entry. Make a nice donation and enjoy :)
Maryann Miceli
The is one of my favorite museums in Chicago. The display of art is absolutely outstanding. All the exhibits are well curated, culturally educating, colourful and beautiful. The museum is free and it's easy to find parking with-in walking distant.
JoAnn Mendoza
NATIONAL MEXICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM
From my old Childhood Neighborhood.
Love This Museum, cause it reveals our culture, our history in itself of how our culture is still surviving under the same old prejudices since the beginning of our lives. It also teaches us we have come a long way, Yet we still have a lot more to fight for EQUALITY! It SHOW us of our Courage to KEEP TRYING CAUSE, SI SE PUEDE!
Kishoree Keislar
Really cool museum, skewed much more modern that I was expecting. Good gift shop and a bunch of restaurants on the other side of the park make it a good weekend activity before grabbing lunch or dinner.
Yeasir Alve
If you want to learn about Mexican culture, you must visit
Jordan Alcantar
I've been coming to this museum since I was a kid. Helps me to connect to my Chicana heritage growing up in Chicago. Very cute museum and great gift shop.
Jazmin Montoya
This is my favorite place in Chicago. I just feel at home. I particularly enjoy the different programs the museum offers. As well as the collections, of course. I have seen the permanent collection countless times but visit it every chance I get. A must see is the Day of the Dead exhibit along w the festivities for the occassion. It is a great way to learn about this holiday.
Clara Gingerich
One of the best museums I've been to. The galleries told a compelling story that the art pieces illustrated. It's not too big, just 4 galleries total, but I feel like I learned so much about Mexican identities and the Mexican American experience.
María Rodriguez
Peaceful....amazing art work and polite staff.
Bill Rastello
Great museum. Admission is free! The quality of the art is great. You can easily spend a few hours here. Been here a few times and I always enjoy it. The gift shop is worth stopping by as they have a lot of unique Mexican artwork.
Jack Chumley
Wonderful and with a dad/tad of attitude from the moms
Katie O'Neill
The museum is amazing, something different event time I visit. I was lucky enough to see the Dia de la Muertos exhibit, it was so touching, with specific connections to Chicago.
Arteee DG
There was a wide variety of art! I had a great time reading all the explanations and just truly immersing myself in the art. Really felt more connected to my culture. The gift shop had a lot of museum paraphernalia but also a bunch of things made by local artists.
Calygirl
Its a small museum with free admission. They have 4-5 exhibit's to see. You can spend between 3-4 hrs here if you really want to read and see all the art which is very beautiful. They have a small gift shop. My husband and I loved it.
Derek Dang
A cool museum in a historical neighborhood. The art here was very engaging, politically-charged, and educational. I particularly liked how the exhibits were able to explain the history of Latin@s in the Chicago area. A bit on the small side, but admission is free. Worth a visit.
Kendall Myers
The galleries are always a great display of art. Went recently and loved all the stuff about ofrendas and day of the dead. Didn't remember it having that last time I was here years back, so think they do it around this time of year. Also had a gallery on the gentrification of the area. It is free, which is amazing. The gift shop always has lovely things to buy and spend my money on instead.
Claudia Espiritu
Small museum but interesting to visit and its free
Kaytee Walker
Such an awesome and interesting museum! I loved the artwork and gift shop there. Staff was also very knowledgeable on the history of some of the pieces.
KiD C.
A museum fit for a lover of modern art galleries. One of the best museums in Chicago. Donation-based too! Which means you can take your kids to get cultured for free. The art is... just amazing. An amazing collection. Some historical, some period pieces, some very modern pieces, some just plain great high art.
Shomik Das
This is a fairly small museum in the area and is typically free for locals. There isn't a very large collection here, but if you want to spend some time looking at Mexican art, it is not a bad place to spend an hour or two (if you take your time). Given that it is free, you can't go wrong visiting and just seeing the different pieces available
M Eli6
Wish they displayed more exhibits as I know for sure there is plenty of space inside (constant shut down or rented out signs). My favorite time to come here is when they have the day of the dead altars set up. I always buy something from the gift shop to give more. They desperately need their own parking lot. There is a large space (grass area) next to the museum being improperly used for park district staff nearby, as its not an actual parking lot & its damaging the grass from vehicles being parked there. The museum should seriously invest in making it into a parking lot & charging to park since the grass looks horrible & parking nearby the museum is such a hassle.
Melissa jager
So well curated! Loved the mix of modern and ancient art. The placards were bilingual and informative. Highly recommend this!
Alms G
The art collection is impressive. Old artist and new. I've also been here for fundraiser and the banquet hall is small but cozy. They have a stage which I love because no matter where you sit or stand you are always engage in the presentations or entertainment.
Julia Moss
Beautiful and free! This museum covered a lot of bases showing ancient and contemporary art. Themes exhibits and interactive stations. I love the gift shop too. They host wonderful events as well.
Berenice Martinez
So worth it! My kids enjoyed it so much and its free admission! U can contribute a donation of any size u like but if u cant its totally ok. Its really educational and the staff is super nice! They totally talked to us and made our tour even nicer. Totally recommend it.
Polly Anywhere
Surprised how good this museum quality is!! It’s even free. I caught Frida’s photograph exhibit by accident. So fabulous!!
Melissa Sanchez
This place was awesome! I loved the gallery -- very cool and unique! Quite a spacious atmosphere to the museum. There are plenty of foods to eat nearby -- mostly mexican. It is also near the Harrison Park (the museum is right down from the park). Also check out their glass display cases -- beautiful things are displayed as well. They also have a fantastic gift store inside too.
Lucas Vargas
Amazing art, I now feel more in touch with my culture.
Nick Wong
Great ethnic museum that is also always free (But do consider making a donation when you visit)! A great way to spend a day while learning about another culture as they always have interesting exhibits and pieces inside that changes throughout the year. Also makes a nice day date spot if you're into Hispanic culture, art, identities, and society. Very easy to get to via public transit and street parking is probably easy to spot since it's in a residential area.
Ali Rasband
Absolutely loved it. Beautiful Dia del Los muertos exhibit and the displayed sugar skulls were so detailed. Rich history and lovely visit to experience the culture a little. Beautiful gift shop also, the kids on the field trip during our visit were thrilled and buying up all the sugar skulls, it was awesome.
Rob Wilson
The Frida Kahlo Exhibit was A-mazing and I love this museum and it's Free and awesome has great exhibits
Jesusa Vela
This is a must for all that appreciate the beauty of history and art. Gift shop is full of amazing items for all ages.
Tony Guerrero
Fantastic experience with beautiful a hidden gem in the middle of Pilsen
gad shady
At the beginning I wasn't comfortable with all these skulls and death exhibition. Those people love death and married mummies. But I found some interesting stuff from mixing old and new Mexican art. I loved some of the exhibitions which represent natural facts. It is also free for admission.
Snow
Beautiful culture and lots of art to view
Daniel Fogel
This place is super cool. I was there for the Day of the Dead exhibit and found the variations of displays from various regions of Mexico to be super interesting. Our guide was well versed in the various regions and was able to add information on not just "what" but also "why" things were done in certain ways. Recommended.
Barbara Leach
Great little museum, great art,.very nice gift shop
Inez Suen
For a free museum...this is amazing. I don’t understand why they don’t charge. They should. It’s a fun museum and much bigger on the inside than it appears. The exhibits are relevant and thoughtful and targeted towards the community. The gift shop is also awesome with varying price point and gifts and souvenirs for all ages.
Saleh Kigozi
This is a beautiful muesium I felt the tour a bit rushed and quick but I expect that because of how new it is. I took stunning pictures of the art and myself with my friends because of the great lighting. There is some good Mexican Styled food vendors outside every now and then so it's great place to be.
Manuel Colón
Hands down one of my favorite Museums in the city. And it's free! All the time, every time! There may be special events or programs that charge, but the museum's permanent collection and two rotating rooms are always free to the public (open to donations of course). You can also rent the space their event space if you're looking for a swank venue. They also have a shop that sells pieces related to the art on exhibit. The history of the space is really great too, hope more people get to enjoy this museum like I do!
C.M. Benson
Great place to spend an hour or two. Museum is broken into several exhibits. Interesting art. Favourite exhibit was the room on the gentrification of the Pilsen Neighbourhood. I had no idea of the 'gentrification grey' color/concept but saw it everywhere after I saw it there.
Janelle Perez Martinez
One of my favorite places to go to in Pilsen. I love their exhibits and the best part is that it’s free to the public ! However, they suggest a donation at the time of checking in at the front desk, but it is not required. I recommend giving a small donation or supporting their gift shop to ensure that the museum continues to stay free to the public, as any little contribution helps. Also, I recommend following their Facebook page as they always have amazing community events held there !
Izzy Kent
This place is truly beautiful 😍 I love coming here! …
Craig Willford
Great museum! Learned a lot of interesting history.
Rosa Hernandez
Beautiful expo for day of the dead celebration
Liz zzz

Li no Mioni
An extremely valuable gem as a museum, as a reminder of the importance of Mexican art and of the Mexican presence in Chicago and in the US. Don't miss it!
YaLan Yang
Good place to learn Mexican art, culture, and history.
Judi Stoker
It was very busy on the Day of the Dead, but the exhibits were beautiful and diverse. The facility is well equipped and maintained. There's also a little restaurant just up and across the street that I also recommend. Enjoy.
R Val
Always amazing art displays and events all showcasing Latin culture as well as art from local artists, easily or of my favorite museums to visit in the city!! And it’s free!!
Ana Barraza
Loved this and the museum store is great too. The fact that it free is icing on the cake
Jerome Patrick Shannon II
If it's free, it's for me.
In all seriousness, this is a wonderful albeit small museum in Pilsen. I end up here every year with my school and the staff, the exhibits, the gift shop is all always a great experience for all of us.
This museum does a fantastic job capturing Latino culture through various rotating exhibits that often feature local artists. Looking for a fun day on a budget? Head to Pilsen, enjoy lunch at any of the amazing local restaurants and then pal around the museum for a bit.
Colette Armstrong
This place was amazing! A hidden gem! Truly some amazing art. Even though it's not that big, there's a lot to appreciate about this place. Plus it's free! I highly recommend this museum. :)
Brienne Diebolt-Brown (YogaGuerrillas)
This museum is ahhhhmazing! The curation of artists - including the visiting collections - is top notch. Some of the art is political ... how could it not be? And, some is just downright stunning and inspired. Highly recommend. We made the trip from Wisconsin, and it was worth the drive. The gift shop is the BOMB too!
fidel castro
Lots to learn about the Mexican culture love it
Nicholas Flamel
This is one of the greatest museums in Chicago, not a lot of people know about it. Not a lot of people even go to it, this country needs to educate itself on Mexican art and culture. Some of the best art I have ever seen in my life, some of the only art to affect me emotionally.
Sabrina Fugh
It's a small museum, but very rich in culture and History. Loved Rocio Caballero exhibition!
Veronica Avila
Small but very artistic and beautiful.
Crystal Lee
Well kept and informative. Free admission! Right now its the Frida Khalo exhibit
Kay C
This is one is the free places in Chicago that is a must see. You can spend an hour in the gift shop alone. The exhibits are powerful. The staff can be a little standoffish and tend to hover, so please don't touch anything.
Shavar Babb
Great art but not quite as big as I would've liked. The museum is separated into 2 separate wings with a fairly small collection. We went through the place in about 30 mins.
Brooke Hutchison
This is a great museum that is tucked away in Pilsen like a hidden treasure. If you're visiting Chicago it's a little bit of a trip out there, but their exhibitions are well executed a worth getting out to see. Hop on the Pink Line and it'll take you within 2 blocks on the museum - so easy!
I loved their Day of the Dead exhibit last year and look forward to seeing what they'll do to celebrate it this year. Oh, and did I mention it's FREE?!
J.
The Day of the Dead exhibit is ah-mazing. Wonderful pieces of art. There isn't a fee to enter but drop a few bucks in donation boxes. Parking wasn't too bad. A great place to add to your 'Must See" Chicago list.
Juan L
This is a wonderful museum and community organization. Admission is free to get in. The museum host and sponsors so many great events and artist. It is located in Pilsen, a wonderful Chicago neighborhood that has many Mexican restaurants and stores. All of this and many beautiful murals are within walking distance from the museum.
Claudia Lenore
Had a great experience here! The exhibits were beautiful and interesting. Admissions are free as well. The place is not usually crowded unless is on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead. Around the time of Halloween). The staff are bilingual, friendly and very informative.
Danny G
Great place to learn about Mexican culture.
Tom
One of the best Mexican heritage museums in the United States, despite it's small size. The permanent collection is nice, but temporary exhibits make the museum truly exceptional. The museum is closely connected to local Mexican community events, which makes it more than just a relic from the past.
Stephen Poore
How could you ever give this place anything less than five stars? They have an incredible collection of Central American art. I'm blown away with the scope and diversity of voices that they display in their galleries. The staff is super knowledgeable, and I learned a lot about Mexican history. I have to admit, before coming I knew very little of the historical significance of Mexican culture--I was ignorant--but, I left feeling a little more aware of our neighbors story and loved taking the opportunity to admire the art. Gosh this place was awesome, maybe one of the most underrated museums in Chicago.
Antonio Vazquez
One of my fav places of all time. If you're Mexican/Chicano, do yourself a favor and visit this place. Free admission and the art is absolutely amazing. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Well, maybe the gift shop could stand to be a little more affordable for little trinkets.
Brock Friedman
Went as a chaperone on my kids field trip. The art is beautiful and very evocative. Most of it speaks for itself in conveying the many facets of the Mexican experience particularly in regards to the relationship between our two countries. Currently the exhibit for Day of the Dead is on display and it's both moving and educational as well as eye opening. I would give it one more star if they had a room for kids/visitors to eat in as the facilities are limited and you need to go somewhere else for that. On the other hand, they have multiple bathrooms so it was ideal for a school outing. I am not Mexican but I feel I might want to return in a year and see what new exhibitions are on display:)
Alex Schwartz
Probably one of the best free museums I have been to. Truly a gem of Pilsen. They make it not only about Mexican-American art but also the neighborhood. The Chicago connection makes all the difference. All on top of a quality collection.
rob fischer
This is a great museum. Interesting Frida Kahlo photography exhibit.
Betsy Thompson
Very cool space! I was here for a #GoogleCityExperts event and loved the Dead of the Dead exhibit! Great art, chill atmosphere, FREE, and an amazing gift shop that I can't wait to go back and check out. It's definitely worth the trip to Pilsen to check out.
Pistolera 773
Nice museum, and love the different events they host throughout the year.
Deborah Soehlig
Always an interesting and beautiful place to visit. The Frida photo exhibit is a must see!!
Zulhaj Choudhury
I never knew this place existed till we had some friends take us. It is absolutely amazing and a must visit for everyone. The room discussing gentrification and the neighborhood of Pilson gives a perspective that I feel everyone should experience.
Ricky Tang
Permanent exhibit of Mexican American identity encompasses a wide variety of artworks across different era--do not miss. Set aside about two hours for it. Other exhibits take about another hour or two. Free admission. Totally worth the time. Thank you!
Margarita Vazquez
Beautiful! I have never been disappointed. I take my mom about 4 times a year. My favorite time to go is around El Dia de Los Muertos. The absolute best gift shop ever! Ask when the exhibits change so you can keep going. Take cash cuz the elote man stays out front!
Maria R
Beautiful place. Love the art it truly gives you a glimpse of our culture. It is small and I wish it were bigger because there is much more that could be presented. Overall great place.
A Vera
Interesting exhibition for the day of the dead.
(Celebrated 1 -2 November) is on display now.
Well worth a visit.
Miss Becca
The art was enjoyable but the building was confusing to navigate. Local street vendors selling authentic mexican food out front was a perfect ending to our visit. I would suggest capitalizing on that market a little better by providing outdoor seating.
Danielle Dubois
Its free so that is awesome. Some nice exhibits but also some weird ones. Overall a cool place to check out in pilsner. They do make you check your bag at the front before entering.
Bryan Robert
It's a very interesting museum with an exciting collection of work.
Gabriela Figueroa
Free Méxican museum, lots of Mexican history and art work. The gift shop is a must. Friendly staff.
Also there are lots of wall art in the surrounding neighborhoods
J F
This place is a cultural gem. Its permanent collection is impressive and features both well-known and lesser-known Chicago-based Mexican and Mexican-American artists, and its special exhibits are always well thought-out and beautifully curated. It's also a beautiful space and is located in the heart of Pilsen, which is an added plus.
Di
It's a small museum full of history and lots of culture. Kiddos enjoyed it! Free admission, however donations are appreciated!
Robert Merz
Nice museum to spend an hour or two in viewing some very interesting art in a comfortable facilty. Lots of good places to eat at afterwards within walking distance and it is free to visit with a nice gift shop to pick up some beautiful art pieces aftr your tour.
Srikanth Viswanatha
Small yet so much to offer. Some beautiful paintings and excellent art work. There was also an exhibition about a large mural done locally by artists at a school.
Must visit.
Mari Mar
It's FREE!! Such a pretty museum, rotating exhibits, so there's always something new. All the descriptions are in English and Spanish. Definitely a good place to go on a date, or family outing. The gift shop is tooo cute!
Eduardo Estevez
Although the building is somewhat small, the art pieces within have infinite meaning and profound beauty. The day of the dead exhibit was extremely interesting and educational as well.
Jacqueline S
On the smaller side but they still have plenty of works. Beautifully displayed and maintained. Loved their gift shop as well- plenty of cool gifts and cute trinkets.
R. ES
Amazing Museum. Really fortune to have this place exist in Chicago. The quality of art work and exhibits that this place is able to bring in is like no other museum in Chicago and probably one of the best I've seen throughout other u.s. states. Please do yourself a huge favor and visit this museum. Experience true deep rooted Chicago, Mexican, Latinx culture in the heart of Chicago. Support this place!
Jane Reynolds
Lovely, well maintained museum and gift shop with beautiful exhibits and extraordinary pieces of traditional and contemporary Mexican art. And it is free to enjoy. Of course donations are appreciated.
Christopher Aleman
Amazing FREE Museum open to the public everyday! A must see at anytime of the year but especially during October when the museum celebrates the day of the dead. You will see alters made by local artist that speak to societal injustices but also to personal traumas. Its a wonderful place to be exposed to mexican culture.
Flo Perez
Free entrance every si gle day they are open. The art work is beautiful and inspiring. You don't have to be Mexican to enjoy this museum, but if you are, this is a must go to for further understanding of your roots.
Kyle Pickard
A free museum just outside of the city center with some amazing and powerful exhibits. There were prices that here historical and cultural, though all were beautiful and powerful. It is a 5 minute walk from the pink line's Damen stop.
Keaton Belle
This museum was amazing and I can't wait to take my class on field trip there
Rafael Maldonado
We spent about an hour visiting the museum. It contains some very interesting Mexican artifacts, paintings and photographs. Also memorabilia about the Chicano struggles in the USA and Mexican migrations to the Midwest. Then we walked around the neighborhood and ate @ the 5 Rabanitos restaurant which offers an excellent ceviche.
Amy Wilschke
Kind of off the beaten path but worth the trip for some great Mexican art. The Dia de los Muertos exhibit was great! And the museum is small so you can get through it easily and then head to a nearby taco joint! They also have a great space for private parties, so keep this unique venue in mind!
Andres de Loera-Brust
Small but thorough, amazing museum of Mexican art and culture
Daphne Porat
Very nice artwork. Worth a visit.
Be aware that they don't like you bringing backpacks into the exhibits, but purses are ok.
Sabra Letaief
Absolutely love this place. Beautiful art, a very unique gift shop, and entry is free. Harrison park is connected so you can also enjoy that as well.
Joshua Gann
I would definitely recommend coming here. Even with admission being free, it's well worth your time to get the tour of their gallery. It's immersive and showcases what Mexican culture is like. I already want to go back and see their other galleries.

It's ok but their display doesn't really represent the Hispanic Mexican history. They can get past the "day of the dead ".
Davin Auble
Amazing, beautiful art with rich culture!! Do NOT miss out on this experience. Plus, free!
Asmar M
A must visit! Informative about Mexican culture in general and how the culture impacted Chicago in particular.

This is the best free museum I've ever been to. Actually, I enjoyed it more than most museums I've paid to get into.
It's fairly large with different galleries showcasing art movements throughout the years in which to roam around. My least favorite was the street art gallery, but that's my problem.
And when you're done there is a paleta man (at least when I went) outside selling churritos. What more could you want?!
Rhiannon Chavez
Went for the Frisa Kahlo exhibit, found rich art culture.
Jose Gonzalez
Learned a lot about our culture and it's roots.
Joel Estrada
Excelent pices of mexican art
claudia castillo
Great place to visit. Enjoyed all the art work.
Becka M
Really great museum. If you need some color in your day, visit here. Such beautiful pieces covering different time periods and topics. And a great gift shop!!
Vanessa Mendiola
This place is quite a gem! One piece of art that stood out was one that displayed immigration on a dollar bill, it was completely creative! The place is small, but admission is free and so I would say, if you would like to explore some culture, this is the place to be.
Bryan Sandoval
Enjoyed, after many false starts I finally made it over to visit. While small and nondescript location that you can drive by like I did. The works are small compared to bigger locations. But you get a sense of struggle that show is their gallery. Lots of different art some makes you think some makes smile. I plan on coming again looking forward to what new things they bring
Ervin Eliud
Always look forward to 'El Dia de Los Muertos' Exhibit. Many displays of art from local and latin american artists. Always free entry. They also do special events. The gift shop has an amazing collection of traditional mexican decor.
D Pham
Very small museum, but brimming with talented pieces. I went during the Dia de Los Muertos exhibits, and the skeleton artwork were amazing. I took me a while to walk through, and I left with many favorite pieces in my mind. I would come back to Pilsen and visit them again in a very near future. Can't wait to see what that would bring.
Phillipe P.
Free!! Small enough to enjoy quickly and big enough to stay a while.
AlfredoSauce
I'd recommend this if you want to learn a bit about Mexican culture and quite a bit of Mexican art!

Definitely worth a visit!

This is a beautiful, community space. It's also free (though I recommend a donation)! They highlight local artists all the time, which is always great to see. Highly recommend this Pilsen spot!
Jesse Quintanilla
The Mexican Art Museum is a great place to go. Children get to there about other culture and art. some are made in Mexico or in the U.S. It's a fun place to go there. Plus they also have a big gift shop.
Ethan Cohen
Lovely little museum in Pilsen. A lot of the pieces have social justice themes, and they work in a good amount of Chicago history too.
And admission is free, which is nice.
Randall Jamrok
This is a nice museum with thought-provoking art. I enjoyed the Cesar Chavez and Carlos Cortez history and artworks. The place is well-kept with interesting exhibits. A highly-prized cultural asset!
Neal O (1959Chicagoan)
Amazing although small permanent collection. Extremely diverse use of materials as well as subject matter. Our personal favorite was an enormous piece made entirely of miniscule beads. The very definition of labor of love. The Worm was spectacular as well. Bonus: I am now a complete person thanks to the Mexican wrestler mask I scored at the gift.
Ian Smith-Dahl
There's always something interesting at this smaller museum. I try to go at least once a year and have yet to be disappointed. It's a little hard to go with my small kids; they don't have anything by way of a kids' area or more kid friendly exhibit space.
Samuel Elder
A very low-key, yet powerful museum. Always free admission, but it has the quality of museums that charge a much higher entrance fee. Absolutely must-see if you live in the city.
Kyle Kosmider
Enchantment.
Gary Sporer
Great stop near the El in Pilsen district. Ask for an explanation of the giant beadwork mural in the second room. Did I mention, free admission. Great Latin eats in the area also. Interesting gift shop.

I found this museum completely riveting. The art, the staff, the special event. Everyone was very accommodating and informative. Incredible exhibits both contemporary and historical with insights into the overlap of both.
Rosa Lopez
I really like a lot I think it's very interested and what they have to see around but I think they need more I know it's also a little hard because it's just buy donations because Hispanic culture is rich and very big I know a little bit hard to cover it all but I come from the same culture and there's nice turn your more about it I haven't had a chance to learn I own culture it was very nice and very interesting for me what I learned When I visit I would advise anyone they have the opportunity to visit to do so thank you

I've been here 3 times over about 10 years and it's always fun. Great art, rotating exhibits, and it's free. If you're in Pilsen, Czech it out
Jonathan Murphy
Wonderful small museum of Mexican art with changing display of great mainly modern Mexican pieces. Located in the heart of a traditional Hispanic neighbourhood, a few minutes metro ride from downtown.
Jess Mean
Head down to Pilsen for a stunning collection of Mexican art from the 1800s to today. I especially love the seasonal Day of the Dead collection that celebrates the art of Jose Guadalupe Posada and the uniquely Mexican holiday. Parking is plentiful and it's also a quick walk from two Pink Line stops.
Hassan Mohamed
Has a great collection of art and exhibits, and it's free
Braids By Jackie

Rhonda Robinett
Beautiful Museum. The best time to get acquainted is October- the Dia De Los Muertes exhibit. They also have people come from Mexico and make sugar skulls- which are fun, and you learn a lot about the symbols behind the holiday.
J Burger
This is a must visit treasure in Chicago. It is run through the Chicago Park District and is free. There are timely exhibits from local, national and international artists as well as staples such as Dia de Los Muertos. The Museum hosts a range of events with politicians to local activists and wonderful music. We saw Sones de Mexico and danced the night away.
Luz Zambrano
Amazing art and beautiful museum
Gen Shearer-McBride
Fantastic museum. A beautiful space with great exhibitions and lovely staff. And a great gift shop! The woman at the front desk also gave us a recommendation for a nearby restaurant that was great.
Jayaram Uparna

Jessica Ruiz
Incredible. Don't let its diminutive size fool you. Really great art to see here, amazing honestly, and then visit the gift shop for neat things to take home.
Alicia Rodriguez
The Cesar Cavez area was amazing! I'm from California and knowing that he is remembered for his work so far from the area he lived in is inspiring! I would love to see some inclusion on Dolores Huerta who also was a great leader for the campesinos.
Johnny Flores
A blessing to visit!
Alex Espinoza
This place was free admission. I would have to say this place was amazing. The art was so beautiful and i would say the artist extremely talented. We will for sure be back.

A gem of a museum with interesting history and the full beauty and depth of Mexican visual arts in display, along with the cultural events inspiring the artists. Cute museum store, too.
Syntax Zombie
Absolutely beautiful collection! I learned a lot about Mexican art and history.
Sabina Kajtezovic
This museum is located in Pilsen neighborhood and celebrates Mexican culture. The entrance is free, with plenty of free street parking available. Really, nothing to stop you from coming here.
The Day of the Dead exhibit featured works of artist inspired by Posada as well as few small pieces by Posada himself. Despite being small, the exhibit is very meaningful and you'll find yourself pondering the meaning of life as you inspect each piece. Some are very touching, like the one called 'Soldiers coming home' by Carlos Gomez.
This museum features one of the most unique shops I've ever seen, I would almost call it a boutique: Tzintzuntzán - Place of the Hummingbird, exhibition unto itself where you can also find some unique art available for purchase as well as sugar-skull inspired pieces.
Ryan Baker
Excellent museum with a fascinating collection of art and an excellent gift shop.
Maria Miranda
It's a great place that offer Mexican culture. The only thing that they have to do , is to watch and be more specific on their time in their calendar. They got me confused by writing 6 p.m. on a time for a play, when in fact the play was to start at 7 p.m. 6 p.m. was when the doors opened.
chris lietz
Checked out the Jorge Posada Day of the Dead exhibit. Small, but well put together. Could have used more background information. Nice facility, great deal since it is normally free.
