Reviews of Vermont Historical Society Museum
This is a neat little museum in the capital city of Vermont! The displays cover virtually every topic in the state of Vermont's history. Some of the displays are setup with kids in mind. Many of the displays are well researched and have much reading material with them. Excellent artifacts and visuals in the museum. You could easily spend an hour or more in here. Price for entry is only $7. Definitely worth a visit.
Compact, engaging full history of Vermont and the events and folks that shaped our present day life. Touch and see on one level. Kid friendly, quiet and approachable, roll/walk-through exhibits. Nice way to enlighten, for $7 admission. Small gift shop has something relevant at every price point too; books, posters, toys, and more. On-street parking right out front, right next to the Capital.
I really enjoyed this great little museum. Only one more floor but plenty to see and do. Definitely worth the 7 dollars
If you love American history, this is a good place to visit. I do, and I found the information about Vermont very well presented and interesting. This is not the most innovate museum, and some might find it dry. But it is worth a visit to soak up a little Vermont history. We stopped during a two week foliage tour and we were glad we did. The staff was helpful and informative.
There was a lot of very interesting information in this museum that I never knew and might not have learned otherwise. $7 adult entry and reasonable hours including some weekend hours. I love visiting historical museums and this was a good one.
We got in for free during an event day offering free admission which was really great for us. We travel full time so paying for tons of museums and outings can add up. It’s a small museum but decently done. I do wonder if there could be a little more local vermont history or more detailed history Added around. Some was more broad and general stuff that most anyone would know. Sure sheep and cows and such were used for farming. But I would have liked a little more in depth history on things and how things were done in vermont compared to other states. How roads were carved and built in and through/around the mountains. History of covered bridges, maple farms, quarries etc. but I also admit I was a bit rushed on a time crunch before closing so it is possible I rushed pass some of these things without realizing.
Overall it was a nice museum and laid out in a horseshoe so it was easy to walk through. But this is a huge building. It would be nice to have more floors of history to explore. Looking at the pricing it seems fairly priced for what is here. $7 an adult, $5 kids and seniors and under 6 free, $20 for families.
I also bought some nice postcards in the giftshop.
Really loved going here! This museum took a different creative direction than most museums. They built prop buildings from an earlier Era of Vermont history so when you go inside these prop homes, mills, etc you truly get transported 100, 150+ years ago and get a real feel of what it was like to be in those times and get a better understanding of what life was like in Vermont decades ago. Also very affordable to anyone wanting to go.
Nice small museum. It will be great to see that even this museum dosen't charge any visitor fee like other Museums in US.
Very informative, well designed and laid out. Good progression from very early times to present day. Good use of the story telling booth. Very engaging, especially for kids!
Rich in history and intriguing.
Small museum but very cool to learn about the history and culture of Vermont.
Great place to visit. Nice set up and easy to follow.
Staff were phenomenal.
Fun place
I never knew it existed. This place is amazing! Hands on exhibits for kids...I wish I knew about it years ago! Such a cool place!!!
Don’t just splice this into a full day. Take it all in and you’ll get more easy-viewing state history than anyone gets in grade school. Oh, and yes great for kids but there’s a lot of info here; adults will want twice as much time and need to plan a leisurely additional visit.
This museum had been around since the building was rebuilt in the 1970's.
A great small Vermont themed museum. A must see if you live in the Montpelier area or visiting from out of the region.
Thoughtful and enjoyable exhibits.
Take your whole family, they are kid friendly.
Many exhibits that you may find in a larger museum.

Excellent experience! Well thought out and put together.
Nice visit to add along with a tour of the state house.
Nice little museum next to the Capitol building. Hits the high points of the State's history. They are very proud of their contribution to the war between the states. Seemed a little light on the other wars fought nearby. It's worth a stop.
Great museum!
Small, but really well done museum describing Vermont history from the time of early human settlement to the present day. I found the section on colonial and early American history especially interesting, especially given the complicated and often strained relationship that Vermonters have had with New York, New Hampshire, and the Crown. Takes about an hour to go through and it is well worth the time and money.
Great interactive walk through Vermont history. Brings it to life with tons of informative materials along the way. Perfect for older children and adults. You can spend some time here, but also walk through quickly for an overview. The staff is friendly, patient, and helpful.
Delightful, professionally prepared, family friendly museum. Inexpensive admission.
Some interactive, child friendly displays. If you are a tourist- highly recommended.
Handicapped access!
If membership was less expensive, I would join as an out of state supporter. Do not miss this museum & Montpelier.
Thoughtful and interesting historical displays. Lots of historical artifacts arranged in relevant groups to illustrate Vermont's rich heritage: colonial settlers, land disputes between Grant's and Yorkers, native American heritage, wars, industrialization, railroads, everyday life and art... and much more. Wish we left enough time to visit more than just the first floor.
We decided to stop in here on the suggestion of the visitor center in Montpelier while on our family vacation. We were staying close by and I wanted my children to see the capital of Vermont so we drove over to check it out. We have 7 kids so it can be a handful when going to places like museums. This ended up being one of their highlights of the trip, they actually kept asking to go back the next 3 days of the vacation instead of visiting other places. The interactive and hands on exhibits were amazing. The kids wanted to just stay and play all afternoon. I learned a lot about the state myself and I know they did as well. I would highly recommend stopping in especially if you have young children.
We decided to visit this museum on a whim after visiting the statehouse and I’m so glad we did. All three generations in my family enjoyed this museum. There were activities for all ages and it was easy to walk through, including chairs for resting in almost every room.
Decent local history museum with interesting artifacts and exhibitions, especially on the native Abenaki people who lived in the area before the arrival of the Europeans. The exhibitions point to the progressive beginnings and leanings of the state, something that I can tell is a source of local pride. The collection is not vast so a visit should not last more than an hour.
They have an affiliated museum in the nearby city of Barre. The lady at the reception was nice enough to give us free passes to that other museum, which we also visited as it was very close to our hotel.
A superb museum.dedicated to the history of Vermont. As visitor to Vermont we learned alot of the history of this state. The exhibits take.you from pre colonial times to the present.
To anyone who who is a history buff, or just wants to learn more about Vermont, I highly recommend this beautiful little Museum. My boyfriend Dave and I stopped by on a rainy day during our vacation. My family has a rich history in the Waterbury area and my great great Grandfather Joseph O Freeman walked from Waterbury Center to Pennsylvania to fight in the Civil War. His survival, and my very existence, was all due to him being honorably discharged because of an injury sustained by a ricocheting piece of metal shrapnel, likely from a cannonball. According to my Grandmother, who just passed away at 96, he believed his efforts would help abolish slavery. The museum is so well laid out as it takes you step by step through each page in Vermont History...one can't help but get drawn in. As I walked through I recalled other stories my Grandmother had shared over the years. I felt as if I was walking through my own history as well.
While educational, it lacks the crafted stories coupled with relevant artifacts that make a good museum great. Instead, it has questionably historic items tangentially related to each other and their accompanying fun-facts. Even their placards raise concerns of their authenticity in multiple locations!
However, it's remarkably balenced in it's retellings. The stories on display here call into question the good and bad of Vermont's history. The surprising nuggets of info here make it a worthwhile visit to a history interested tourist.
(Make sure to read some of the notes left in the telegram exhibit. Schools come by often and have their kids write adorable letters to their future ancestors!)
We went on the fourth of July this year... and it was Great! Shockingly good collection, informative.. even hard hitting local history of kkk and slabwry issues... a beautifully displayed exhibit of Abanaki regalia and crafts etc. Gorgeous Catamounts. Antique Furnishings pottery woodworking and History fit for the entire family! A must see.
Big part of Vermont history telled in a beautiful museum...
This small museum packs a lot of history. Engaging display about Vermont's story from the Abenakis through the present.
If you want to learn the history of Vermont, that's the place to go. Lots of very interesting infos about the early years of the state and how was the life back in the 18th-19th century in Vermont. The staff is very kind and helpful. Higly recommand!
If you enjoy history and artifacts, timelines and and stories of stallworth people, then this is a must stop when you visit Montpelier VT.
I highly recommend for all people not just history lovers. Fun and interactive exhibits for adults and children!
My wife and I spent two hours here and were really impressed with the exhibits, the detailed information that was presented, and the staff. Spend a few bucks and squeeze some more information into your melon.
A fair collection of artifacts used to describe Vermont's history.
During the summer, the museum hosts free outdoor live music on Thursdays. Check museum website for exact schedule.
I love this place! It's great for kids and adults!
Great place to lean about Vermont History.
Very small but very informative museum. We learned a lot about the states history!
I'll be honest: it'd be interesting to a history buff or a serious student of Vermont miscellanea, but I wouldn't take a group of schoolkids there, let alone kids who've been riding around in the back of the car on a vacation.
The folks here are extra nice, answered all questions. Check out local artisans here. Wood turned bowls and ornaments. Free parking and close to downtown.
Happened upon this museum. Really enjoyed the varied displays and presentations. Informative. Plan on a couple hours to take it all in.
Nice coverage of the history of the state
Nice place with a ton of Vermont history. Set up very user friendly to walk through. People were knowledgeable and friendly
Lots of great exhibits, I learned so much about Vermont history
As a tourist from another city I found this museum to be a fun and informative snapshot of what makes Vermont a great state to visit.
It's good for the grown ups or older kids but for my 3 and 7 year old sons there wasn't as many engaging exhibits as I had remembered from when I was young
Great presentation of Vermont history
What a fine way to learn the history of this great state. The museum is a a charming and complete experience.
The hands on articles: like telegraph mach., animal skins, seeing the realistic murals, thnx
Lots of information. Take at least an hour to visit. The best feature is that it is not self glorifying. Nicely done.
Good exhibit that I maybe visited a little too fast. Pricing is decent might worth visiting when in town.
For $7.00 something for everyone. Half hour tour. Last Mtn Lion shot in VT on display
