Reviews of Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium
Audrey P
The Fairbanks Museum is something you have to experience to fully appreciate. With that being said, it's a haven celebrating science, nature, and culture. The collection is priceless, from the carefully positioned birds of Vermont to the beautifully woven Abanaki baskets. There is obvious care and consideration put into every single piece displayed in this museum. I live in Burlington and don't mind taking the beautiful 1.5 hour drive to Saint Johnsbury just to see this museum. The wildflowers of Vermont display, the butterfly garden, and the planetarium are all parts of this museum worth enjoying and visiting. I hope this special place is celebrated for many more years to come. Definitely worth a visit!

The building is just as interesting as the many exhibits in this museum! We loved looking at and reading everything and our 3 year old had a blast in the kids science area.
Brendon Velletri
They pack a lot of information into that building, my daughter had a blast. Very interesting, very fun, and very interactive for the little ones

This was a very fun experience! They have so many different animals on display for you to view and learn about. Upon arrival you get handed this divice and you enter in the codes displayed by the animals. It explains a bit about them and you get to hear the sounds they make.
Entry cost $12. But if you want to see a movie in the planetarium it costs $7. Total fee was $19.
The planetarium shows a film on the round dome ceiling. I suggest sitting towards the back you get a better view.
On the balcony level there are displays about history and geography.
I will definitely return!!!

It's something to do if you're in the area. Was a little confused as to what the theme of the museum was. I felt the $12 admission and $7 planetarium fee was a little much for what you get. That being said the front desk attendants were extremely nice and welcoming.

Beautifully preserved natural history museum with some awe-inspiring items.
The entire place is a great exhibit showing the history of museums and taxidermy as well.
Nico Samneil Salado
It is worth the bucks if you are into science and history. It is great they also showcase different cultures from the east. The assistive device is helpful to get the story while walking and observing. The place is also calming to the eyes. We learned a lot on this trip. Carpark is on the side. Not much people in the afternoon.
Christina DeStephanis
This place is gorgeous. From the extensive collection of taxidermy, to the incredible architecture, to the fun and unexpected planetarium show, the Fairbanks is a gem. We went once and it surely wasn’t enough, can’t wait to go back and bring visitors with us. My toddler was a little antsy, but between the animals and the science area, my kid had a great time.
Scott Anderson
A MUST visit. Great place to take the kids. Lots of interactive displays to entertain them for hours. The pieces in the original museum were very interesting. The highlight of the visit was the planetarium. The presentation was very compelling and the presenter was very enthusiastic and passionate.
Daniel Middleton
Visited here as a side trip while staying near Lake Willoughby. Although it is not a very large museum, my kids and I spent about 2.5 hours. Large selection of taxidermy. They have a nice section of interactive hands-on displays. We also visited the planetarium. The man that did the presentation was very entertaining.
Rob Horn
The Fairbanks Museum far exceeded my expectations. The images of the museum don't do justice to the displays. There are many interesting areas of the museum and their collection is impressive. There is a hands on area for the kids and the planetarium show shouldn't be missed. The host of the show Bobby was entertaining and insightful. Overall my family had a terrific experience.
Nanny D
we had a blast, but the five star rating was earned because of the teenage docent, Seamus. They were SO sweet with our six year old- making crafts with them in the butterfly house area was the highlight of our visit. Stay awesome, Seamus!!
Jay Spence
This place is awesome! In the summer there are outside exhibits and activities. All year round, there is an extensive indoor collection of animals, and hands on exhibits. If you live locally, admission is free, making it a great place to take kids frequently.
Dr. Chad Johnson
The kids loved it here. The planetarium was great. There were so many exhibits and things to check out, they could have spent...a whole day here.
Christian DeVries
Lots to see and read. Some kid experiments and things to play with. Also some dinosaur and fossil stuff that my 7 year old loved. I would've given it 5 stars, but not as kid friendly as possible. Beautiful butterfly exhibit.
Samot Nagaf
What a cool place! There are so many interesting exhibits throughout the museum. The dioramas are incredibly well made and informative. The ticket price for adults is $12, which is well worth it. The planetarium has some amazing videos to view as well for $7. There is an entire section for kids as well as some outdoor exhibits. The architecture of the building itself is worth the visit. This place is a hidden gem in Vermont and worth the drive to quaint St. Johnsbury.

This was out first visit here today and unfortunately we left feeling like we were mistreated by the staff. Museum is overall nice and lots of interactive science projects for the kids, 4 and 13 years old. We went up to the planetarium room to wait for a movie to play and the door was locked. We went down At 1:15 to ask the lady at the check in desk what time the dinosaur movie played that my 4yr old was super excited about. We waited nearby until close to 1:30. Of course being 4 my son asked to use the bathroom on our way to the movie.( which he did directly in front of the lady and she watched the whole situation play out) We came out at 1:33, minutes later, and as we walk by to go upstairs the lady said” I am sorry but they lock the planetarium doors at 1:35 so you will not be able to get in.” She seemed to get pleasure from this and didnt say anything when My son immediately started crying and asking why we couldn’t go see the movie. We had to leave disappointed and felt like this could have been prevented.
Hanna Kirby
Visiting is a must when in the area. The staff was very friendly and happily willing to answer any question. Very cool and amazing collection!
Susan Henderson-Utis
Small but wonderful. We arrived just in time for the 1:30 planetarium show, and the docent was kind enough to let us in first and pay after the show (so we wouldn't miss the beginning). My elementary-age kids, husband and I had a great time exploring the museum and butterfly garden. This museum had something for all of us, and we ultimately left happy and more enthused about natural history. A super outing for 3 hours!
Tess O'Brien
We love it here! Hadn’t been in a long time but it still has its magic! We loved going in the Planetarium to see the film and they even did a short talk on the night sky before the film started which is really cool to see inside the dome!
Brittney
Great place to bring young children. It has tons of interesting exhibits.
Esther Paris
My husband and I spent several hours here enjoying the place tremendously. I learned lots of new things. Lots & lots & lots of birds, so if you have ornithophobia or taxidermiphobia then skip it. The exhibits are from all over the world, from the Arctic to Australia.
Nichole Link
Absolutely love this building the architecture is a beautiful very old home and awesome planetarium found a Groupon code and got it for a very cheap price to see both the planetarium and the museum the outside surrounding buildings are also a beautiful site. Highly recommend for anyone. Great restaurant options centrally located to the museum.
Larry Krainson
Very informative museum, good planetarium, fun butterfly house. A good way to spend a few hours.

My family and i loved this museum. Not very big but tons of stuff to learn about!. I will be coming back another time because my kids loved it so much as did i. It wasnt very expensive. Its very beautiful inside. Its nestled in the cutest town.
Kyle Minns
I have been to museums all over the country, this is one of my top five favorets. It is small but it packs alot in...
Jaime DeVita
Great museum space with so much to look at and learn. Hands-on exhibits and live looks at butterflies and bees. The planetarium show was excellent, we went to the one with the live host who was professional yet entertaining, who didn’t overwhelm us with information but went deep enough into explanations that it taught this amateur stargazer new things. Very pleased with this visit! Will probably plan a trip to return if I have the time!
Rebecca Waggoner
A fairly small, but wonderfully eclectic museum in a historic building. They've retained much of the buildings original features, making the architecture just as fascinating as the exhibits. The planetarium is newly remodeled and very interesting. Something for everyone, a bit of this and a bit of that. Staff is enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. They take obvious pride in their museum.
Mia McDonald
Amazing. I got to view all the curiosities as the kids played near enough for me to keep watch. Lovely displays and classic fun.
Mia McDonald
My kids and I spent HOURS here. There was so much to do and see in such a nice-size space. I was able to view a photography exhibit and read every caption because the kids were so engrossed in the activities, and I could see them the whole time. We ate lunch at a picnic table in the lovely backyard, then looked at butterflies in the butterfly enclosure. Not done yet! We went to the planetarium for a show and returned a few day later to do it all over again. We all loved it.
Aaron Thurston
Echoing many 5 star reviews. Awesome and we’ll worth the cost. Hidden gem. Surprising composition for a seemingly small building. Very kid friendly. Our 2 1/2yo son had a great time. We had a blast!
Mike Caputo
Been here 4 times since first my first vacation to Vermont in 2011! Great presentations of the sky! Planetariums are fun to go to!
Susan Peters Russell
This museum is free for local residents and moderately priced for anyone from out of town. Interesting exhibits, fun gift shop, and a planetarium at certain times of the year. There are special programs in the summer that are geared for children and a play space out back but is often filled with interesting exhibits or animals.
D R
Such a great museum, my favorite VT museum so far. Beautiful, fascinating, with so much packed into a smallish space. They really go out of their way to give you a lot for your admission. Great staff as well.
Adrian Bell
A wonderful museum with an assortment of natural history and space science. Includes a live bee hive display, butterfly garden, and planetarium shows. Would definitely go again. Around $12 for an adult and $8 dollars for students and kids not from the area.
J. Simone Posner
Nice diverse selection of industrial, scientific & natural phenomena under one roof!
Nathan Perry
Nice place, well maintained, in spite of looking quite old. Friendly staff. Very cool exhibits including stuffed bears, birds, and other mammals. Also includes quite a few insects.
Powdered Toastman
I went there this summer and it was amazing. They had a whole section for you to experiment with different Hong things. I also liked their butterfly house because the butterflies had a large enclosure with many plants. The planetarium was great and I learned stuff about the night sky.
Darren Overby
At first I thought $9 for a small town museum was a bit expensive. Boy was I wrong. The museum is small but it's world class. They have managed to acquire priceless amazing exhibits from all over the world. Part science, part history, part archeology, part nature this museum has it all with a small town friendly feel.
Trajan Spillane
It's a beautiful museum! A bit on the small side, sure, but really good nonetheless. Check out the butterfly house and planetarium!
Amanda Lavallee
Seeing lots of dead animals can be very educational. And some of them even talk to you! (If you use the audio device) We laughed, we cried, we pretended to be butterflies.
E Skrupz
We came a few minutes late to the planetarium show and we were the only people there but the guy did the show anyways! I’m so happy he did because we got such a personal great experience in the planetarium. Very funny and informative. I’ll be looking for the North Star!
James Araujo
Impressive assortment of taxidermied mammals, reptiles, and birds on the main hall. A separate section features interactive science experiments fun for kids and adults. The second floor of their main hall features a varied collection of cultural pieces.
Oliver Ames
This is the #1 Natural History museum in Vermont. Everyone is dedicated to what they do, the displays are fantastic, and the planetarium show is well worth the extra few dollars. Great for kids and adults alike.
Nathaniel Todd
I have been to Fairbanks many times throughout my childhood and have very fond memories. A nice, informative, engaging museum. Of course, the planetarium is also fantastic.
Mr. Moyet
I bring my child here often. So much to explore. Only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars is the planetarium does not do too many viewings throughout the day.
Alex Bienko
Awesome history and natural museum that rivals some in major cities with its collection.
Michael Wong
Two floors, $9 dollar ticket, roughly 45 mins visit. It's average, maybe when the annex addition it will be better.
Garth Leach
The Fairbanks Museum is home to a fine collection of natural history, as well as the state's only planetarium. There is is always something new to see and the building itself is amazing.
Jonny D
Not easily stroller accessable, especially to the 2nd level. Kids enjoyed the hands-on area (even this big kid). Not all displays had information displayed.
Heather Kenyon-Haff
Great little museum with eclectic collection. New exhibits just unveiled. Recommended although quite small.
Ken Shainker
Nice experience, worth a visit. Reasonably priced.

(Translation) The building is unique in itself and worth seeing! There are several interesting specimens, but the place lacks a bit of lighting and we quickly go around. $12/adult and $8/children.

Le bâtiment est unique en soi et vaut le détour! Il y a plusieurs spécimens intéressants, mais l'endroit manque un peu d'éclairage et on y fait rapidement le tour. 12$/adulte et 8$/enfants.

(Translation) For children there is plenty of laboratory testing area. 5 years and over. The planetarium is fantastic. Sky video and great guide on site. It s not grandiose, but it s very entertaining. Allow 1h30 to do the tour + 30 minutes of video in the planetarium.

(Translation) Splendid museum having preserved a deliciously outdated museography reflecting at best what could be the passion of a traveler collector passionate about nature and cultures at the end of the 19 th century. A very nice discovery. Above all, do not change the presentation.
