This place is INCREDIBLE! If you are looking for something interesting to do, you MUST visit the Birds of Vermont Museum. With hundreds of different bird carvings, creatively placed in beautiful habitat displays, this has to be one of the most unique and well-thought out nature museums we have ever visited!!! Most of it was masterfully created by a brilliant artist named Bob Spear, whose insane talent and dedication to birds/conservation will truly blow you away!! We learned so much and stayed for hours.
For winter visits, be sure to email to make a personal appointment. Ours was last minute but we got a response right away because staff is super sweet and accommodating. Big shout out to Kir -- you were so welcoming and we loved talking to you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Bob's art with us. We cant wait to recommend this gem of a place to all our friends!!

What an absolute gem! As we were driving there in our tiny car, we wondered what we were going to find, because the place seemed a bit far from everything else, on a not exactly paved road. It was well worth the trip. Whether you are into bird watching or not, this place is a must-see. Amazing wood carving and you end up having to remind yourself that you are looking at wooden birds, not the real ones. We loved interacting with the people at the museum from the person who greeted and guided us, to the long-term museum member who shared her stories about Bob Spear with us. We also took a short hike on the trail, where there was the healthiest little freshwater pond with frogs and lillies (and apparently a new resident beaver!). There are longer hikes too, but we unfortunately had to hit the road. Highly recommend visiting this lovely natural history and arts museum!

The sculptures in this museum are incredible. The carved birds are amazing. You can tell it was a man's life work and it is impressive! Behind the museum are some of the best walking trails in Vermont. This place is a must go if you're in the backwoods of Vermont.

Large gallery with detailed carvings of birds, great walking trails all around.

Amazing! Part wildlife experience part art museum. This place is great for people who love birds and also for people who don't. The wooden carvings are intricate and well done and super interesting to look at. The bird calls were fun to go through and see which ones I could recognize. They also have hiking trails and extremely helpful staff who is attentive and patient. Loved it here.

Wood carved birds were so beautiful! It was like being next to them up close, since they were so perfectly done. Amazing! Loved the gardens and the treehouse. Staff was very helpful and friendly!

Small but charming museum dedicated to the bird carvings by the founder, Bob Spear. Also nice trails around the museum.

Inside the museum itself is very cute. The wood carvings are incredibly detailed and plaques are very informative. The workshop is really cool - you can see where the original artist actually sat and carved, as well as all the tools he used. The two family bathrooms were very clean. They require that you schedule your visits during the time of covid, but they are very accommodating. Family membership (plus 4 guest passes) is only $50. They provide scavenger hunts for kids and have a really cute shop right inside the front door. They also have nice story trails. We got a membership because there's so much to see and do. Highly recommend 👍🏼

Hidden gem in the woods that I wish we would have found sooner on our trip! Lots of nice trails to explore outside and amazing wooden birds inside. They had a scavenger hunt for my kids which was great and an introductory video we watched about the founder. Very worth your time and the effort to get there. They had a observation window to watch the birds and ground animals outside that my kids quite enjoyed.

This educational experience was more than I could ask for. The wood carvings are so intricate and lifelike, and the staff onsite were extremely kind and knowledgeable. It felt like time slowed down while we were in the museum. We felt at peace, and we left this museum with a stronger sense of conservation for the environment. The drive from Burlington to this museum was a scenic drive that was absolutely worth it with its rolling hills and beautiful homes.

I went here for my birthday with the family. It was nice to see all the wood carving of every kind of bird. It's a great way to add to social science for homeschooling parents.

The Birds of Vermont Museum is an incredible place to bring your family, friends, and even school/recreation groups!!
I run an after school program and have brought groups to visit. They are very child friendly and have fun activities set up for the kids.
The museum has continued to follow Bob Spear's dream of spreading important information about local and migrating birds to the public, which in turn educates us all about these birds and the importance of preserving their natural habitats.
There are multiple trails to hike for bird watching and a lovely gazebo for additional bird watching.
The highlight of the museum to me is seeing Bob's workshop where he studied and crafted these birds and their natural environment.
If you love birds, art, or nature this is a MUST visit spot in VT!!

This is a gem of a museum! There are over 500 accurate wood carvings of birds. There are a few hiking trails to explore. If you are in this part of Vermont you should stop here and support bird conservation.

Had a fantastic time here back in August 2019. The bird carvings are incredible! Very very detailed. Lots of love birds to see in the area and nice trails to hike on all around the museum. It’s well worth the trip out!

This is a smaller museum with countless hand-carved statues of the birds found in Vermont. Really well put together, very educational (and inspiring if you're into wood crafts), and all of the people who work and volunteer there are incredibly friendly! If you're around in May-June I recommend a Sunday morning bird watching walk!

A paradise for nature lovers! The Birds of Vermont Museum features a host of amazingly intricate and lifelike bird carvings completed over many years by Bob Spear whose dedication to conservation through education was obviously unfathomable. This fantastic resource offers a wealth of information about the avian population spending time in the Vermont region, realistic male and female representatives of most species, various bird and nature activities, as well as a woodland sanctuary of many acres available for those who wish to explore. Knowledgeable staff who love helping enthusiastic birders and novices alike round out the mix - it's definitely worth visiting regularly!
Paul Link
Outstanding small museum of both native birds and wood carving. Large collection of hand carved birds as well as the artist's preserved workshop. Worth visiting. Also proximate to the Audubon center and numerous trails.

I went on a day trip here and it was wonderful. Started with a hike on Bob's trail, then had a peaceful lunch in the Tree House and ended with a tour of the museum. It is inspiring to see such creativity and vision. I look forward to returning to do Spear's trail

There were 7 of us. We were greeted right away. Questions answered, background provided, all great information and a lovely place to go. An amazing chronicle with beautiful artwork. Nothing was lacking. The grounds were also beautiful.
Tracy Sherbrook
Fascinating place to spend an hour exploring the bird carvings and the nature trails. Beautiful tucked-away spot. Staff members are kind and informative.

I liked this place because I like all birds. There were a lot of them. The birds were displayed in as natural a setting as possible. Little kids aren't tall enough to see most of the displays. The carving room had some real specimens in drawers.
Dennis Loudon
Interesting. Some of the bird carvings aren't very realistic but give you a good idea of the coloring of the birds. Workshop was very interesting. Nice touch was there buttons at some bird carvings that played the sounds of the bird when pressed. Too hot to walk the trails the day I was there.
Eleanor Woodruff
Spectacular accurate woodcarvings of all the birds in Vermont. Doneby one man. Beautiful museum and outdoor area to have picnic. Trails in woods ,too. Also feeders outside to watch birds. Highly recommend this!!!
Gordon Hatusupy
Awesome place to visit if you are a birdwatcher and also if you are not. I brought my wife and in laws, they really liked the place. There was a lot of activity at the feeder and I managed to photograph a hummingbird that was making circles around the museum!
Micah Mutrux
Well, if you're into birding then you already know all about the museum. If not, then you should come check it out because, 1) there are hundreds of hand-carved birds that are more impressive than you could guess, 2) the story of the fellow who carved them is wonderful and told well, and 3) the expertly guided walks around the maintained trails on the property make it easy to learn about, and appreciate, our birds.
For example, I learned that chickadees are very curious and will follow a group through the woods, and that the male verio sings endlessly so that his mate feels safe sitting on the nest.
This is the kind of place where you can become interested in something totally new, simply because everyone there knows so much and is so excited about it.
Heather Kenyon-Haff
Small and unique museum great for birdwatchers, and hiking, snowshoeing small kid friendly and surprisingly accessible for physically handicapped individuals. No fee for trails but one for museum.
Phil Smithback
It's a weird little place, to be sure, but the carvings are absurdly detailed and the grounds are a lovely place for a little hike. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well.
Kate Fulop
Great quirky museum. The birds are exquisitely carved and there are great well maintained trails all around the center including ones with activities for kids.

For a place thats basically run on donations, this is a little gem of a place. Lots of hand carved bird displays and bird walks on certain mornings with a couple of experts pointing out the sounds and sights of the local critters.
Laura Lane
Interesting collection of carved wood birds displayed in habitat groupings. Trails for birding. Active feeder with indoor viewing!

Discovered Birds of Vermont a few years ago. Friendly people, Bob Spear's bird carvings fill the museum to the rafters and carving classes held a couple of times a year.
