Reviews of Billings Farm & Museum
We visited this farm on a week day and it was little crowded. the farm is very well maintained. Ticket for one adult costs 17$. They have well maintained Restrooms at the visitor center. They have ample of parking which is complementary.
What to expect?
Few events like milking cow, info on sheep's and able to pet them. You can see small animal barn, horses stables, sheep barns. They do have cafe inside we liked the pumpkin ice-cream.
This is set on a beautiful piece of land. The museum is very well done with interesting displays and plenty of information to accompany the displays. You can also go to the barn to see the cows. Another smaller area has the small animals and the horses are outside. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and their young. We had a fun and interesting visit. Definitely recommend.
I absolutely loved my visit here! The cows were so sweet, the farm was really pretty and there were a lot of interesting and educational things to do. We went during the Harvest Festival, and Billings Farm did a great job organizing it, and making it interactive and fun. I'll definitely be coming back at some point.
So much informative interactive fun with the Jersey cows . Arrived @ milking time , lovely host walked us thru the process ,girls milking told us 7 min to milk cow by machine, 1/2 hr by hand!Sanitize hands is a must and able to pet sweet calves was educating experience. Grounds are gorgeous, goats are Baaing all along fence following your steps.Gift shop inside was decorated , festive, staff friendly. This is a must stop for city adults and esp with kids !Had so much fun with staff , animals, soaking farms ambience and sweeping views.
Loved this farm. Though I live in a rural area with lots of farms, I thought this place was very interesting and cows were so cute.
Maps of the place are available and there is lots of panels to tell you what you can visit.
Cows are used to the public and you can pet them.
Bought some cheddar as well and it tasted good.
A fantastic place to learn about Woodstock and three very prominent figures in its history. The free 30 minute video in the museum is absolutely worth it and the miles of trails and mansion grounds across the street are beautiful.
You can pay for access to the museum and the mansions or take advantage of all the free offerings (including free first flour viewings of the mansion on weekends).
Loved the cows!!! Came here Saturday, October 15 with my family. My 3 year old loves a spanish cow nursery song and when she saw the cows she started to sing! We parked across the main farm parking and went to a nearby pen and a herd came to us. They thought we were going to feed them. The cows were very friendly and curious and stayed near us for a good amount of time. This became my 3 year olds highlight of our Vermont trip! I highly recommend coming to Billings Farm to feed cows and other livestock and see farm life!
The museum has a lot of exhibits perfect for children. There is a bathroom and water filling station. There is a park ranger who is very helpful. The trails nearby are easy to moderate and well marked.
This is such a cute place for a half day trip. We went there on a break during our ski trip and spend a few hours there. The stuff are so nice and informative. The animals are cute and the history there is interesting. I highly recomand this place. Very close to the ski area.
Love the idea of history, museums, and animals combined! Perfect setting, along with beautifully represented. Everyone was super nice and informative.
THANKS FOR A GREAT TIME ❤️
Working farm with ancient history of super wealthy taking and giving back in philanthropy, and conservation, cows and sheep to visit. You can walk through the home which is interesting. It starts with a 15 minute film which was professionally done. Overall good but a little pricey.
Charming working farm with lots of activities for kids. The goats were wonderful. Be sure to wear "farm friendly" shoes & comfy clothing, nothing fancy! Homemade products for sale, a museum, very helpful & friendly staff. A very enjoyable way to spend the day with family.
There’s so much history to The Farm manager’s 1800’s house. The guide is absolutely a gem who so passionately asked and answered questions. Love how she brings herself to do it on every tour.
Nice place to visit with kids! Plenty of parking. You can cover museum that will take you back in time, Farm with Animals, Apple trees, etc. anyone can spend about 2+hrs here. There is shop inside to buy ice creams, coffee, donuts … few kids activities as well. No complaints 👍🏻
Wonderful place to show you how farm works. Everything maintained clean and professional, including Cow, goat, sheep, horse, variety of plants. I especially like the farm museum within the visitor center, which exhibited how farmers worked 200 years ago. The short documentary film, "A Place in the Land", is shown daily at the visitor center. It introduced the story of George Perkins Marsh, Frederick Billings, and Laurance Rockefeller, who were successive residents of the estate, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
Staff was extra friendly and knowledgeable, and the exhibits were varied, so they kept me engaged. They gave info on the people, land, industries, etc. The video at the start was very well done ( I've seen a lot of museum videos, and most are terrible. But this is an award-winning documentary). And they also have hands-on demonstrations, a dairy bar with snacks, a really good gift shop, and lots of great scenery to admire.
The farm is so nice. It’s great to walk around and see all of the animals. There is also a little cafe
Somewhat disappointed in that the gardens were not as big as last time we visited. However, the museum upstairs in the main entrance building is a great display of farming tools etc of the past. And the cows are always great
Fun place for the autumn season! Pumpkin ice cream, apple cider donuts, BBQ, and fun arts and crafts.
Super cool, the pics in the review just scratch the surface of what they have to offer. You could use a whole day to participate in the activities and learn about the beautiful livestock and grounds.
Wow! Exceeded our expectations! We anticipated that we would just be seeing a working farm with some demonstrations about farm life. We were wrong. Yes, it is that but so much more. What was also impressive was the history that occurred on this site and the huge impact on the future of forestry and agriculture. The totally restored buildings for beautiful but also works of ingenuity showcasing state of the art technology for its time. The museum was extremely well furnished and up to date with high quality exhibits throughout. Again, it greatly exceeded our expectations. While we were there, they even had demonstrations of some of the crafts associated with the historical period. We were able to see the creation / making of felt and creating finished felt products. Also for demonstration was a loom for making fabric. While we didn't sample any of it, on the premise is a creamery wear people can buy ice cream and creamery goods made from the milk of the Jersey cows on this organic farm. I highly recommend this for people of all ages from age to to 99 (although centenarians would also find the Billings farm and museum interesting also 😉).
Loved it.. So much to see. Toured the old managers home. Was able to see a variety of farm animals.
Staff was knowledgeable and nice.
Very clean
We got really close to the cows and goats - we were able to pet them, and the sunflowers were gorgeous. A beautiful property and it was fascinating to learn about the history of the area.
What a sweet stroll through history. The Jersey cows are gorgeous! Make sure to pick up some cheese in the gift shop.
We was there two days ago. Beautiful weather. Very beautiful leaves here
Spectacular farm and museum. They had a tour through the restored farm house from 1890 that fascinating. Loved it!
Beautiful farm experience. Hands on interaction with day to day farm operations and the animals.
Totally work a visit if you're in Woodstock! The farm was so educational and full of history.
If you love cows, you'll LOVE this place. I'm sure there's so much more museum-wise but I was very content just being up close and petting all the cows, even the babies! It's also a beautiful place to walk around.
I went to this farm with my friends Lutie and Lydia to see a quilt show competition. The quilts were amazing, but we didn't see much of the farm. I was intrigued by the Mansion and the cows that I saw. This just means that I need to visit again. I voted the quilt below as my favourite because it was done by hand.
An amazing place with great history and amazing collection of assorted industrial machinery and tools.
The farm has a lot to offer and places to explore. Wonderful for kids, a first date, or even a comfortable scenic walk. Close to the town of Woodstock, you could technically walk to the location, and it’s a beautiful walk too.
The farm has everything from cows, sheep, horses, and chickens. There is a wide range of animals to watch, and interact with. The staff is kind and helpful. Again, I love bringing my kids here. Also, check out the ice cream, it’s delicious.
This is not a place you can just come to once. I feel you need to visit a few times to take everything in. There are subtle details, from the rock walls, and landscaping that pop out over time, the landscape here ever changing as well. We come about once a month.
Once you are ready, go into town and grab a bite to eat, or visit a bookstore. Again, the walk is beautiful.
We brought a 2.5 year old who loved it (we did as well). Every step of the way we found fun little areas to explore. Also, the staff was generous and friendly with their time and expertise. We got some root beer floats and cider donuts. The donuts didn’t taste very fresh, but the floats were amazing.
Such a cool place! We went for Christmas at the farm and got a sleigh ride as well as to make a mini mince pie and dip our own candle. Got to pet cows and goats as well! So fun and very awesome to learn the history
Just a delightful time and I only had an hour.
The ice cream is delicious. The history of the home and butter making...fantastic.
An absolutely delightful experience. Extremely Covid friendly. The staff could not be nicer or more accommodating and genuinely want you to have the best time. Cool and interesting museum as well as interactive farm where you can pet the animals. Nice little gift shop with cheeses, honey, etc. Overall a really nice time for all ages.
Wonderful guides and cool tours - everyone was passionate and willing to explain and answer questions. It’s equally cool for kids and adults. The cows are very cool & the calves are so cute!
A fantastic place, the staff were friendly and very knowledgeable, their mission is really admirable. Love the cows, sunflower garden and managers house. Can't wait to go back to see the rest!
Very nice. Pastoral. Fantastic exhibits. Children would ❤️ love it here. The cows 🐄 love to be petted and spoken to. Glad we went. …
Just perfect. The cows were big soft sweeties, the sheep couldn't care less about you but the staff are so invested and knowledgeable. All the historical aspects were great to see.
Great museum walk though. Meet some animals around. Very friendly staff with lots of information to share. A must place to stop and tour around the farm.
Great place to bring kids to see a farm at work. Also, explained the history of the area and the stewardship of the families that lived there. It is a beautiful farm.
What a wonderful visit! A bit pricey but well worth it considering all of the animals, demonstrations and tours you can take. Definitely a fan favorite with the kids. The town itself is very cute and seems like you can sort of park and walk.
Outstanding working farm/museum
My family had a wonderful visit to this working farm/museum. Every person we interacted with at the farm was informative and hospitable -- from the person who sold us our tickets to the people in the dairy to the people working in the house. I particularly liked how the wagon ride is INCLUDED in admission.
We had a great time, loved the gift shop, and learned quite a bit about late 19th century cutting edge technology.
Interesting glimpse into the history of this farm. We really enjoyed exploring on our own and taking time to learn some of the history from the various guides, which were all very friendly and knowledgeable.
Great that it's still a working farm and wish we had got more of the butter cheese which is amazing!
It's definitely a good time, but I wouldn't go too out of your way to visit, especially during covid times - a few of the main attractions are closed right now
Father's Day special, dad's free admission.
Fun time making ice cream and meeting the farm animals. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
We had a great time today visiting the farm for Copeland's 2nd birthday. His only suggestion is to show more tractors. Lol!
This is a gorgeous place, and the walk down to the river is well worth it. I learned thibgs about butter making and squash I never knew. Friendly and helpful staff
Maple Sundae was soooo good and if you stayed at Woodstock, free pass to go to it. Overall great experience, loved the sunflowers!
A must see spot within the state. Animals are very well maintained and live very well. The added educational segments are well put together.
Clean, well run, knowledgeable staff, good variety of farm animals, great farm museum, loved the sunflower maze. Good for kids of all ages, and adults.
We stopped there after a few days in Stowe to see the sunflower garden. Really worth the stop, enjoyed the history and workings of the farm.
Adorable local farm. I love their events and experiences! I visit frequently.
Enjoyed everything we participated in. The topper was seeing a calf being born. Perfect experience for a (facebook- Simple Earthy Family) traveling full-time.
Great place to visit! Lots of animals. Very educational.
I loved it! I got slobbered on by baby cows, what could be better!
So much fun petting/seeing all the cows and other animals. Affordable admission
So worth it!
We had a lot of fun this weekend. My son loved all the animals. The farm house is beautiful! I feel like there really wasn’t as much to the farm as I expected but our experience was pleasant. There is some construction currently.
Great experience! Really neat to learn about the Jersey cows and the history of the farm.
If you are a Triple A member or military be sure to tell them when purchasing tickets to enter.
Excellent family entertainment. Beautiful farm. Great hiking trails. Well informed docents!
Great place to take the kids plus they have all sorts of other stuff going on all the time,
One of our favorite parts was petting the sheep! But we loved being to see up close all the cows, calf's, horses, pigs, goats and chickens!
Loved the museum, but in our 1 and 1/4 hour time allowance did not get to farm.
The baby cows were absolutely adorable
Great outing for kids, interesting history for adults. Unfortunately the cafe server wasn't friendly and made us want to leave early.
So we were a little worried by the $16 admission fee, but by the end of the museum tour, the barn and cow tour, the milking demonstration and the farm managers house tour, we certainly felt as though we got our money's worth and then some. The museum is a walk through history of dairy farming in Vermont and was very detailed and well presented. The farm managers home was also well maintained and the presenters were very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend for history seekers and kids alike.
My son and I stopped by and I was a little disappointed that they weren't more handicapped friendly. So we just visited the gift shop and left. That's why I'm only giving it 4 stars and I don't have photos.
It looks really cool though. I would highly recommend it for families, especially for kids 12 and under. They have a lot of fun activities and the gift shop has really cool things in it.
Loved visiting Billings Farm! Perfect mix of museum and actually seeing the farm animals. Staff are knowledgeable and kind, always willing to answer questions and clearly passionate about their work. Very kid-friendly but also entertaining for adults. Great history included. It's nice how close it is to Woodstock so very convenient if you're staying there. Also right next to the start of the Mount Tom hiking trail. I especially enjoyed seeing the newborn cows! Very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!
What a fun way to check out the rich history of Woodstock. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and informative. Loved checking out the newborn cows. Plus getting to see the history of the farm was really cool. They do such a good job of displaying the history in an informative and interactive way. My wife and I will be back when our little one is older
Great exhibit / video telling you the history of the farm. Tons of beautiful spaces to explore a and walk around, meeting the different farm animals. They have dairy cows, sheep, horses, and chickens. Try the cheddar from their gift-shop, you won't be disappointed!
We had a great time here on our drive back to Boston. The staff there are helpful and friendly. They had a newborn (within a few hours!).
Wonderful place to explore for both adults and kids!
Great experience, learned about conservationism and industrial-era farming, especially in Vermont. Wonderful staff! Christiana (sorry if I spelled that wrong!) was amazingly helpful. She made my entire experience worthwhile.
Beautiful scenery. Cute animals. Lots of Historic information. What's not to like? My guy and I even enjoyed some donuts and cider in the sunny fall weather overlooking the grazing pastures. A great stop on the way to our next home away from home.
We went on a group tour to this place. It was during thier anniversary celebration.
They had music, food, activities, and even some old time baseball. It was a fun afternoon.
Very cute animals and historical land. Staff is very informative.
16$ for an adult admission which I thought was pricey. Beautiful farm with friendly cows. Children and adults alike will have fun here.
Really awesome farm experience with a well preserved museum of precious artifacts from the early days of American farming. Great plays for kids! They have lots of animals, horses, goats, cows. Great way to spend a few hours in VT!
Pricey but had a great time. Loved the calves. So cute.
Great place. Staff is friendly and informative. Loved petting the cows and goats.
Beautiful place to visit ❤️
Great for kids. It's a special place, but personally I feel the entry fee is excessive.
A great visit - the hands on experiences with animals were great and the displays were very kid friendly. We enjoyed seeing the calves, the cows, the goats, the chickens and the sheep. The girls loved the house and the laminated sheets that gave them details about certain parts. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. We right along a picnic lunch to eat - lots of picnic tables. Tons of trash cans on site and a water refill station was available. We definitely recommend this as a stop for families in the area!
What a wonderful, historic place. Very accessible, and beautiful...even in the rain.
I went with my grandchildren ages 6 and 8. We all had a wonderful day. They were able to pet the animals, see a 1 day old calf, let the older calf lick them, and run around with some other kids. The finishing touch was the ice cream cones made from the farms own ice cream.
Woodstock Vermont is worth visiting just to see Billings Farm. The most beautiful Jersey Cows you have ever seen.. not just my opinion, literally the cows are show cows and win competitions. The cows have been breed from a long line of elite Jersey Cows that go back over 100 years to the Rockefeller! Weather you are 6 or 60 you will enjoy this farm/ museum.
Lovely staff. Educational.
Such a wonderful experience. So clean and absolutely loved the sunflower garden
It's a gorgeous farm, but way over priced. There isn't much to do farm wise. No picking of any kind and regular farm animals you can see for free at many other farms. The main attraction is the museum, which is very nice but mostly for adults.
Came 1h to closing and the staff graciously gave us discounted tickets. We got what we were looking for - fresh ice cream and milk. The pepperoni was really good as well. We didnt complete the entire tour but still enjoyed it.
Pack a lunch, but save some room for ice cream! Enjoy the history of farming, while petting the next generation of prize winning Jersey cows.
A great day with the family!
Very beautiful land such a great place to take a family.
Nice place to spend a day, the museum is really interesting, the buter cheese is really good. They have around 40 cows that you can see even when they are milking. Really nice. And of course don't forget the ice cream, really good.
Great place to visit for an intergenerational group. Kids will love the cows and other farm animals. Adults will appreciate the well-organized exhibits and learn a lot about the agrarian roots of Vermont life 100-150 years ago. Well worth a 3 hour visit.
I always have a blast walking around Billing's farm. They put on highly informative exhibits around the year so nothing ever gets old. I love to just hang out and pet the animals.
The best icecream, and I really enjoyed the tour off the place, loved the 4 day old calf.
Great historical farm experience.
AMAZING PLACE, a true gem of a find, very informative, and you MUST check out the Farm managers house ... It's ahead of it's time
What an amazing place 🙂 I say magical 🎄 …
This place is really cool. I love that they actually care for these animals that are on their property. They allow you to pet them and as hundreds of questions..lol. Thank you for not getting annoyed with me. Milking the heifers is at 3:30 we were a little early but stick around to watch how they do it. All the animals of the property actually have names 💜it
So beautiful! The staff are helpful, informative and friendly. The sunflower garden is amazingly unique. The cows are well cared for, it is an incredible farm. There is nothing not to like. The hike afterwards made for a perfect day!!
What a wonderfully pleasant and educational place! Enjoy the gardens, animals, and exhibits. Things change seasonally, of course (we adored the Sunflower House and quilt exhibit at our last visit), but there's always something interesting to see. The staff is very knowledgeable if you have any questions, and they're doing a great job of taking precautions around COVID-19. Worth a trip, for sure!
The animals were well cared for; the staff were friendly; the farm in general was very well cared for.
Can't comment specifically on the museum. We went there to use the hiking trails which were nice and good for any level of hiking. If your looking for a traditional hiking trail with difficulty, then you would not be happy with these. Beautiful views.
Cool place- admission is kind of expensive for what it is - went for wassil weekend with our infant and they offered food items for sale but we were required to eat them outside as it was raining and turning into slushy snow - no ya les or blocked
Off area to make feeding an infant and 30 degree rainy/snow weather easy. Events that were special for the weekend ie: candle dipping was a nightmare and they protocol in place due to covid made the process take forever and involved walking around a table several times that everyone doing the activity was getting motion sickness. Not very accommodating of strollers. Covid policies were extreme even for those who were vaxxed which really ruined our ability to enjoy the fame
To its fullest. Ie: being able to eat our snacks indoors and not get wet with our baby. Being able to breath in a place were we had to lug strollers up stairs and curbs due to wearing a mask and overall causing the facility to be more crowded as no one wanted to get wet but there were only 12 people allowed to
Candle dip. Maybe we will try again in the summer but do not go in the winter especially in a pandemic if you want to enjoy yourself if you have a little ones in strollers forget it because the accessibility of the whole place was a nightmare my spouse child and I ended up being cold, wet, tired and irritable after and it ruined our trip as that was what we were most looking forward to (a trip to Billings)
1890's creamery and farm. Nice museum, animals, delicious local ice cream, well informed guides.
Wonderful day out combining this museum with the neighboring national park. Highlights were petting baby cows, lovely museum with history of the farm and the farm managers house. The farm managers house featured early indoor plumbing was very neat to see.
C'mon ... Does this place really require another review? Everyone knows that this is a world class experience. No matter how often one goes, there is always something new and exciting. A family can easily spend an entire day there. A stroll through the parking lot to or from your vehicle proves by the variety of license plates that the place is sought from far and wide.
Beautifully restored home, nice gardens and gorgeous setting. The cheese wasn't great though.
Great working farm to visit. The free cheese samples were delicious! It was really cool to see the baby goats and lambs that were only a few months old. A must visit especially to see the sheep herding demonstrations.
A must see! There is so much to do and learn about at Billings Farm. My husband and I went on a whim and it did not disappoint! We walked through the barns, gardens, museum, and farm Manager's home ( which was restored to it's original design). Had ice cream, cheese, and crackers afterwards in their picnic area. Can't wait to being our son back with us next time! Greateta place for an inexpensive family trip!
Live nearby, but this was our first trip. Excellent. Museum exhibits are very well done and interactive. Yummy ice cream. Loved the gardens...especially the sunflowers.
Love the place and fun to visit with the family.
Drove bus load of students here. They had good time. Limited parking for the bus on site.
Back to 1890's, a spectacular, immaculate working farm, with a great ice cream stand, I recommend the strawberry!
Wonderful place with many animals, educational information, and friendly employees! Highly recommended if you have kiddos who enjoy farm animals!
Enjoyed displays and history of the farm.
Got to pet cows! Got to see great gardens and meadows! Did I mention the fabulous ice cream and cheese?? Awesome! Don't miss this gem...a "hidden" in plain sight treasure on Woodstock, VT. Don't miss this great spot!
If you are looking for a variety of light to moderate hiking trails, with several nice viewpoints and a beautiful pond, this is it.
Most trails are wide and graded with good footing, but if so inclined, check out Precipice trail for some more rugged terrain.
This is an incredible place. Meet animals, pet cows, and just explore an incredible farm.
Very beautiful working farm with a remarkable history. Well worth the trip.
Such a peaceful retreat for anyone that loves nature. History, animals, gardens and chocolate milk. What’s not to love
My daughter who is 3 loved everything, seeing the cows petting the calves. Take the kids it's worth it
Beautiful place!!
Really nice place to bring the kids to see the and pet animals but over priced. Specially for a place that was founded by a very rich family.
It's okay, pretty scenery, dairy bar, the buildings with authentic period pieces, farm animals (you can only pet the cattle in one of the barns), there were tables of interactive items with people giving talks. Museum upstairs in main building and gift shop. Nothing exciting, been to better farm / farmers museums in other places. Note: you can get your passport stamp here for your National Park book since park across street is closed for Covid.
Nice if you have never been on a farm before. Pricey and underwhelming for a local. Not much to do for kids, it'd be nice if they would take a cue from Shelburne farms and put in some play spaces. Not a place I'd probably visit again and not a place I'd go out of my way to visit but worth a stop if you are in the area. Nice staff.
A great place to learn about life on the farm in the early 1900s and a great way to get up close to cows\horses\sheep etc
Great historic park. Amazing farm and friendly animals. Nice trails and hikes.
My best friend and I visited VT in October. We walked from our hotel to Billings Farm. It was such an enjoyable, scenic walk. Our visit to the museum and farm left us so impressed. The museum was Smithsonian quality! And we so enjoyed sitting outside with charcuterie and homemade ice cream. Everything was delicious. We then walked around and visited all the animals. The heifer experience was out favorite. Interacting with animals is so pure.
We returned home and both agreed that the day we visited Billings Farm was a day that will remain in our memories for years to come.
A few months after returning home, I got the itch for some VT products but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I contacted the farm and they went above and beyond to get me what I was wanting! They even included a personalized letter in the shipment. I was so moved! I hope to one day return to the farm and relive that beautiful day. Special thanks to Jen Flaster and and Maplewood Orchards!
Fun exhibits in some beautiful spaces. Great place for families but also enough there to entertain adults. The caretaker’s house was also very fun and interesting!
Working farm within a valley great views of fall foliage
Warm friendly staff and SAFE AND CLEAN facilities. Bathrooms were immaculate and cleaned between my 2 bathroom visits! Beautiful indoor facilities. Amazing grounds. Well cared for animals. LONG history. A gem. Beautiful mointains
Beautiful and peaceful place to visit!
Beautiful place nice employees
This working farm and museum location was so lovely, fun, and educational. In a very "close-up and personal" fashion, we saw a dairy farm and cow nursery operation as it was in small farms before heavy automation... and were highly captivated. Though far from our first farm tour, this one felt more intimate. We were so well informed by all the guides and were fortunate enough to have one highly knowledgeable guy covering multiple areas with us (thanks, Greg -- we totally enjoyed you!).
The story beyond the farm operations that is so important to learn is how the 3 distinct men and their families invigorated early capabilities for Vermont that built industries but also helped shift enterprises to work with conservation and sustainability at its core. Marsh was the initial visionary who established the farm and built something special from the start. Billings then developed conservation and technology advances to spur sustainable growth. Finally Rockefeller came along later to preserve the present and then gift the story and work for the future to all of us for many years to come. The story is richly layered and laid out well in their 30 minute film in the visitor center. So, was it fun to pet baby and mama cows, goats, and sheep ... absolutely! Did we enjoy learning more about the making of cheese and butter ... we did! And the farm house where you can (lightly!) touch an era long gone was great. But we also came away with much more, including wanting to learn/do more for conservation. We hope you enjoy and learn as well!
This is a small farm family owned with years of incredible history. We really enjoyed the cow milking show and found the staff so helpful and friendly. We had an amazing time, we did this with our 3 and 1 year old and they plus the Adults all loved it!
It's a cute place. If you like history, and getting up and close with some animals this is a great place. Also the cheapest place in the area I found to get the Billings cheese. This cheese is 12/10 cheddar, and they have samples for you to try. The 29 minute video is worth the wait, it is genuinely an interesting story.
Nice place with plenty to see. Each building had an employee that elaborated on its history and welcomed questions. If you grew up near farms then you won't care much for the cows, maybe the horses though. I was bored with the history, but it is a museum. They have a small gift shop and had complimentary apple cider.
The quilt exhibition was enjoyable, although we disagreed with the jurors’ choices. The sunflower house, the main reason for our visit, was great - who knew there are so many different kinds of sunflower? We concluded our visit with delicious ice cream at the dairy bar.
All animals are healthy and happy. I got to pet baby cows and goats. What's not to love!? Plus their ice cream is delicious.
Experience farmer's daily life.
I love it . it was alot of walking but it was wonderful
Wwry nice place , especially if you come with kids. You can see cows and milking process. Check the schedule before your visit, this place is not working every day..
Visited Billings Farm on a Sunday afternoon in August. The grounds are beautifully kept and you get to interact up close with the animals. We pet dairy cows, draft horses, and a dwarf goat! Staff was friendly and informative. Would absolutely recommend for adults and children alike.
Great place to visit.
It was a rainy day when we went so perhaps the facility was not at it’s best. This is both a museum and a working dairy farm. The exhibits are good but not as nicely done as we’ve seen lately. The staff were adequate but with the exception of Cyndy and Greg in the Cow Barn were not exceptional. Still, worth a stop.
Billings Farm is a beautiful place to spend the day! The grounds are amazing and the farm animals are so fun to see. They often have interesting and educational events going on - I was lucky enough to go during a Sheep Sheering & Herding weekend and watching the Border Collies working was the best!
Clean, open, pleasant, friendly, a bit underwhelming. Sunflower house was nice but not big. Walking path was peaceful but basically a loop around a field, though it did have River access which was nice.
Amazing farm and a must-see in Woodstock. The staff is all incredibly friendly, the museum was AWESOME and the food/snack bar was great. Perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Fun filled day.
A great place to see old and new farming techniques. The museum is really well done. The movie explaining the property is top notch. Go down to the barn about 3 pm and watch the award winning jersey cow get milked.
Beautiful place to learn about the rural lifestyle
This place is beautiful and well done. The barns are very clean and the kids can pet baby cows.( Sooo frickin cute) Very nice place to take the family. Before you're done for the day, stop in the gift shop and buy the large blocks of cheese, all 3 flavors, or you WILL regret it as I do. Small blocks don't last long. I guess ill just have to go back.
Amazing place. Cows are top notch. Really makes you never want to eat beef or drink dairy again. God bless those beautiful animals.
Great exhibits and information about farming.
'dem cows got some BiiiiiiG udders!! Good for a wee stroll and the staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. 3 adults in my group but would be a great place for younger kids.
Very kid friendly, staff there to answer any questions the grandchildren had. Lots of animals. Wonderful area for a picnic. We go there quite often.
Staff was very friendly, grounds are beautifully kept, and displays were informative and neat
Beautiful working dairy farm where you can stroll the grounds, tour a museum, and pet the Jersey cows. Fun with kids or adults.
What a wonderful treasure! For adults and especially kids.
Wonderful peek into how the super rich lived when modern appliances did not exist. We got the winter tour, along with a horse drawn sleigh ride and a tour of the house and stables. The most memorable part of the experience was seeing young calves in the barn, so much like baby deer. This place and its grounds are a national historical park so that must be worth something as well.
This place is awesome and was fun for the whole family. Easily a day trip and probably worth going back if you live near.
Our family LOVES Billings Farm. It is great fun for all ages. The sleigh rides in the winter, the wagon rides in the summer, the baby animals in the spring. The staff is lovely! There are lots of great activities for kids. The old house is great to tour. The scenery is awesome. Make a day of it and visit The Worthy Burger in Quechee for lunch afterwards!
Billings Farm and Museum is a delightful, don't miss kind of place located close to Woodstock, Vermont. Most importantly, it is a working dairy farm, much of which is smoke free, where you can witness the many aspects of life on the farm and the cows, chickens and horses. A real treat is the 1890 farm hose, fully furnished as it was back then and mostly open to the public. You will also be treated to an oversized, and unbelievably delicious, home-made ice cream cone in one of several flavors. The Vermont Farm Life exhibits are extensive and intriguing and this city person amazing things that I had never thought of. There are films to see and audios to see all in magnificent Vermont surroundings. There is a lovely walking path and the expected gift shop. If you live within 100 or so miles of Billings Farm, it is a worthwhile day trip. If you are just passing through the area, I encourage you to add it to your itinerary.
Family friendly activity in the Woodstock area. Kids and adults will enjoy meeting jersey dairy cows, gorgeous 1 ton muscular Belgian horses, and calves in the nursery. You can get up close and personal -- petting the animals, watching the milking process. They give free samples of the cheese and also had hot apple cider on the day we went. It was a great activity for the non skiers in our group.
Beautiful place!!
This is an important museum with respect to the history of agriculture in North America. It is desperately undersold. The advertising should make much more of its importance and how interesting the place is. We went by accident, thinking that it was a petting zoo for children and were delighted to find how interesting it was.
Our family was there September 14th, 2019. All 8 of us had a wonderful day. We saw many antique farming items. The farm was clean and family (children) friendly. The staff was amazing!!! Thank you!!!
Billings farm was very interesting place to visit. I enjoyed everything about the Farm. But we were disappointed about not able to see the cows . Other than that. The Billings farm was excellent.
Beautiful farm and animals!
Was a beautiful afternoon filled with lots of informative commentary provided by knowledgeable docents as well as lots of farm animals. It was lovely to stroll around the grounds and finish the afternoon with ice cream!
Super nice and helpful guides. We didn't go into the farms but walked the carriage trails that were well groomed and easy. I wore inappropriate footwear for the walk and I had no problems walking the trails.
If you happen to be driving through vermont and are close by, it is worth stopping here. Very cool and well kept up farm with lots of animals for everyone. The kids love it and it’s a beautiful place for some pictures.
Really cool operating farm and museum in the beautiful green hills of Vermont. It seems to be a great stop for all ages and interests. We loved visiting the livestock and restored farmhouse. This is a must see spot if you’re in central Vermont for a few days.
Amazingly beautiful. Eorking farm of Jersey cows. A tribute to the life and times of great men and their families establishing and preserving life as it was years ago. Educating generations of visitors to understand the importance of land preservation, historical preservation, agricultural preservation.
Enjoyed petting cows, baby calves and goats amoung picturesque fall hillsides.
Great pleace for entire family and all cultures:)
Arrive so you can do the movie approximately every 30 minutes at the entry or the rest won't make sense. Make a reservation once you arrive for the mansion, tour the visitor center, the barn and make the Farm House and Mansion fit in after the movie. Allow 1 hour for the Farm House. Didn't have time to do Mansion, but I'd allow an hour. Very interesting.
Had an awesome time in the late Summer here. Highlights include feeding apples to Goats, petting baby cows, amazing fresh ice cream, great cheese samples, an awesome sunflower maze, and more!!!!
Love! Love! Love! 🥰
I love animals & history 😁
So if you're like me - go for it - really!
It's absolutely beautiful 💜
I will recommend 👌🏾 ❤️ the cheese 🧀 smoke cheddar and the maple 🍁 ice cream 🍦 from their cows.
Absolutely beautiful farm and homestead. Fun place for children with plenty of opportunities to see animals, a farm, and grab some ice cream.
Amazing place for the whole family. All sorts of educational programs, lots to see on how people farmed and lived in the 17th century and of course all the cows and animals to visit.
We had a fantastic family adventure at Billings Farm today: feeding calves and baby goats, learning about old farming practices, and even a pickup game of baseball with 1860's rules!
Amazing place with a beautiful sunflower maze.
Awesome and serene place, especially if you have kids, they are going to love to see the animals
I grew up in the country side and did not quite get why I would pay $20 per person to see a few cows and horses. Yes, they have cheese tasting and small demos, but nothing too special.
On the other hand, the Billings Rockefeller park next door is prime trail running ground.
Excellent experience for the whole family.I am 80 and enjoyed everything .
My daughter and 2 grandchildren were with me .Happy time.Staff outstanding.
Absolutely beautiful farm! Very inspirational place for those of us that have experienced and enjoy learning about simpler times in life. You will not find any lazy people around here.
We love Billings Farm!! You can get up close to the animals, see history relived and travel back in time. All in a beautiful setting! Perfect family outing!
Great place for kids. My son loves feeding the baby cows. Great people working there.
Great family place to visit. The kids will love the close farm animal encounters.
Appreciated the free film in a nice theater in the lobby showing the fascinating history of the farm and the story of the first owner, Marsh, who wrote the first book in America about preserving the ecology of nature around human development. Also the story of the Billings and Rockefellers coming to Woodstock and creating thoughtful landscapes and resorts.
Pretty cool place in history. Had to pay to go downstairs and see The Fallout Shelter. In the 1960s Cold War. Pretty interesting it was only like 10 bucks so that wasn't too bad.
This was such a beautiful place. Very friendly staff.
I had the privilege to be in a wedding this past fall at this wonderful location.Everything from the moment we arrived took ourbreath away, it's very well managed, the architecture is traditional Vermont with amazing moder wood visual interior, the animals friendly and needles to say beautiful. If your looking for an amazing experience for a wedding in Vermont or an unforgettable destination with family this place will reach anyone's expectations.
Lot to explore. Take your time, don't rush through. Venture out and take a dip in the river.
Well maintained facilities. Super nice staff.
Great place to purchase maple syrup and the tour is good
I would have tried the cheese except I am lactose intolerant, and could not determine if it was extra sharp and aged at the time = best to be safe
WONDERFUL visit, I wish we had more time to visit. A great place to take children. NICE STAFF!
Great place to bring kids
We really enjoyed our time at the Billings Farm and Museum. We were greeted by much more than we were expecting. We will visit again.
Enjoyed it very much. Great place to visit. Staff is warm and very friendly.
Very inspiring to these people who care the earth, for the next generations.
Every time we go back we see something else that we overlooked the previous times. We love comming here!!!
As a member of the museum, I am always surprised at how the staff keep the farm interesting. I love every visit (even during winter).
Amazing for animal and history lovers
Nice place to visit with kids. Variety of animals to see and they usually have some kind of events or demonstrations scheduled. Ample parking and interesting mansion across the street.
We enjoyed our time there.
Wonderful place for kids. My 15 year old son did not want to leave. He was pushing aside 5 year olds to pet the baby goats...not really but he probably wanted to.
.
It wasnt what I was expecting. I follow them on Facebook and it looked like a great place to visit with fun things to do. It was expensive to get into and I felt like I wanted my money. They didn't have much going on that was fun for all ages.
Had the best time during sheep week! Fun for all ages - learned so much and had a great time!
Really cool place to bring the family. So much to see and the ice cream is so good.
Fabulous place for families to visit! Working farm. Knowledgeable staff. Lots of educational activities for all ages! A must see!!
We love this farm and museum. It brings back the real Vermont to my wife who was brought up nearby on farm. So great we come often and are members.
Very nice place to take children very cute museum good icecream and lots of cute farm animals
If you visit this neat like farm, DO NOT LEAVE without trying their cheese. It is hands down the best cheddar I have had anywhere!
I have been here at least twice and it's awesome! I saw the Tractor event in 2014! I will be back as this is one of a few top spots for me to see in Vermont!
Great spot for family outing.
Really cool place for kids, but I am not sure if it is wroth the current price tag.
Great place! Beautiful scenery and can pet calves and see how butter is made. Everyone is really friendly.
Beautiful grounds to explore. Dairy bar offers chips, ice cream, cheese, and tea during COVID-19.
Wonderful day at a great place. The lessons on quilting and historic butter churning were enlightening. The Maple Walnut Ice Cream was special.
The farm is amazing. The exhibits are beautifully arranged. Support our heritage sites
Excellent place to visit if you ,travel to Vermont. Place to learn about agriculture, actual working farm! Great for the whole family.
I loved seeing all the baby animal but I really wish the baby's got to stay with there mom for more then they do now or then but it was still fun..
This place is well worth the money to get in. It gives a very good historical account of the area and the conversation done to improve VT.
Great for kids with barns to tour and animals to see, ice cream shop on the summer. Check the hours and website to make sure they are open.
Beautiful example of farming and land management.
Great place to learn about farm life and technology advances that put Billings on the map. Also in the quaint town of Woodstock with its great rural atmosphere and restaurants. Like being in Europe.
A nice farm to visit but was hoping for more interaction with staff and animals. Most of it is self guided. A little pricey.
Love the baby calves!!! So cute ..got great pictures of my kids and the farm animals
Also take horse sleigh ride..its great

I love that Billings is a continuously running farm. There is always something to do. The kids loved the sunflower maze and surprisingly the cheese making demo.

Awesome place, great local history. Perfect for families of all age and sizes
Wonderful farm and history. Make sure to watch the film they have playing in a loop in the theater.
Save your $. It's a couple cows, goats and chickens you can get close up to. Not worth $25 a pop at all. It should be "donations accepted" for what is offered.
Pretty farm but not a great place to visit in late October. Most things were closed for the season.
Love cows, love sheep, love horses it’s a great experience coupled with the national historic park across the street.
A working dairy farm with wide grazing fields in a picturesque Vermont valley. Run well by the National Park Service.
Really interesting history of the farm and the region. A most enjoyable visit.
