Reviews of The New England Holocaust Memorial
What an incredibly moving Monument. I was overcome with emotion while visiting. The Monument consists of a walkway lined with informative stones and plaques and six glass towers. Each tower is etched with 1,000,000 numbers, each representing one Jewish life lost among the estimated 6,000,000 who died during the Holocaust. The enormity of the tragedy is just overwhelming. Each tower has a heated vent at its base to preserve the glass during colder temperatures. You walk through a pathway through the base of each tower. Looking up you see all of the etching. In addition there are small quotes and stories on the inside of the towers, many of which moved me to tears. It will leave you somber and a bit humbled and sad but I still recommend visiting.
The memorial is somewhat small but very tasteful. I really appreciated that it is set in such a public place and alongside the Freedom Trail. Our tour included it as a special stop even though it is not an official part of the Trail.
It is easy to miss this memorial as it is right along a busy road and a bar street. At first glance it just seems like a small park, but when you walk up to the monuments...
I recommend going here when it is dark, as you walk under the columns, you can look down and it looks like a starry sky, which makes it more surreal when you look up and realize just how many names are etched around each column against the true night sky. A hazy misty rises from the grates as you walk over that can give a more unearthly quality to the memorial.
I went here with my sister who loves history and there are a lot of starling facts on the information stands as you walk along the memorial.
Easy to add this onto a walking exploration of the area including the old state house, Christopher Columbus waterfront park Faneuil hall marketplace and the Paul revere house.
Walking back to our hotel, we happened upon this memorial. Having recently been in Amsterdam and Paris where we learned more about the Holocaust, this memorial was equally humbling and reflective. The six panels contain quotes from survivors who talk about loved ones killed in the six concentration camps. There are millions of numbers etched all the way up the panels. I can only imagine they are the actual numbers that were burned into each captive’s arm. This memorial helps us remember the atrocities.
Such a beautiful and touching memorial. Peaceful, impactful, meaningful quotes, the history - so powerful!
Unbelievably moving. Take your time walking through it, don't let anyone rush you. It is an experience everyone should have.
It is difficult to comprehend what happened to millions of Jews throughout the war. We must all work together to remember and achieve world peace.
This memorial is absolutely incredible. Not only is it a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing structure but it is also so moving and full of history and sentiment. It is such a great place to reflect upon the horrific events that the Holocaust represents but also a great way to honor those who perished during those times. It really serves as a reminder of how humanity plays a role in evil acts when we are complacent with things that happen around us. I really enjoyed reading all the quotes on the monument and I shed a lot of tears during my visit. I strongly recommend a visit to this beautiful memorial.
This is so amazing to see!! Everyone should see it. It's so beautiful. It tells stories of those who were in the Holocaust and what they felt. The horror they saw. It's small but packs a punch. You need to take your time and read the stories. A great part of history. And the best time to see this is in October because they have steam that come up and keeps you warm just like what the poor people felt in them showers. I feel for all them family's and this monument is that awesome to honer them. A must see.
This is a truly powerful and emotional place that highlights the horrific history of the Holocaust. Walking through the glass towers you can't help but feel overwhelmed with sadness and admiration.
These glass towers really stuck with me. They are so simple in design but conveyed such a powerful message. It serves as a reminder of the terrible events that took place and as a warning to never let them happen again. In these trying times, it's more important now than ever to remember and never forget the tragedy of the Holocaust.
The purpose of this museum is to educate future generations, pay homage to the victims, and keep their memory alive. It's a place for reflection and a place to ensure that the world never forgets the atrocities of the Holocaust.
I highly recommend a visit to this memorial, it's an experience that will stay with you for a long time.
It is not easy to find a parking spot around anywhere in Boston, but if you specifically want to visit this open air museum, park anywhere around entrance of North End neighborhood or Quincy Market and walk there.
As I mentioned, open air display, right across Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, in a strip like park, with all kinds of bars and small restaurants right to the side of it.
Make sure you read all the inscriptions and stop by the vents that mock the gas chambers to experience the heartbreak and chills of history, one that repeats itself over and over again.
What a beautiful, moving reminder of what can happen when the world turns a blind eye to hatred and violence. Take your time walking thru and read the quotes from survivors. Some of the lettering on the sidewalk is worn away but most of it is still legible. Beautiful!
Very well-done memorial. The towers with the victims’ numbers going all the way up help to imagine the sheer magnitude of 6 million. Very moving with the quotes from survivors. Took about 10-15 minutes to read the quotes and walk through—definitely worth a visit.
Amongst a thriving and exciting downtown you may get a chance to walk through this memorial. And you absolutely should. It is built to provoke and reflect, and it does exactly that. Spend the time to read the stories and memories, and think about what this all meant and still means to this day. If you have young children then you should take them here and explain to them what this memorial is about. This is a modern Boston treasure not to be missed. It’s anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes to experience this.
Beautiful and masterfully done memorial. I love that's it's right out in the middle of the city like that. Unassuming towers until you walk through, start reading, and realize where you're at. When you start looking at all of the numbers on each tower, it really hits you how massive this event was.
This was a beautifully done memorial. The mist, the glass, the greenery, it was all so very well done. Very moving, clean and sentimental. Within walking distance, literally less than a minute walk from Quincy Market.
Really impactful. Take your time when visiting.
Between Congress and Union Streets, near the Faneuil Hall, you can find the New England Holocaust Memorial. Created by Stanley Saitowitz (1995), this is a touching reminder of the atrocities committed against the Jewish people and other minority groups during the WWII.
Here you will see six class towers which you can walk through on ground level. There is steam rising from the below, which creates a hallowing and somewhat eery effect as you make your way through the towers, reading the many engravings on the walls of each tower as well as on the ground.
During our visit, the autumn fall foliage had began at this memorial and there were considerable yellow leaves on the trees and surrounding ground around the New England Holocaust Memorial, making it quite beautiful to see at this time of year.
Conveniently located alongside the Freedom Trail, this is a very nice memorial that is worth seeing and while sightseeing in this area of Boston.
I’ve never left reviews of attractions but this one is a must if you’re in Boston. Passed by very unintentionally but it stands out enough to make people gather and wonder what it is. Very chilling but beautiful at the same time. Really makes you reflect. It’s built so well and the best memorial I’ve seen.
Very emotional. I had heard the number and never truly grasp the meaning of it until presented with something tangible.
Each pillar is etched, top to bottom, with a number corresponding number of someone who was at the camps.
Right outside, so it is fairly easily to walk through if you have a few minutes. Powerful and beautiful. If you can, just stop by.
5 stars because it is a walk through free memorial. Everyone is respectful, hopefully the visit will help them to gain some knowledge and insight about the terrible atrocities at the concentration camps. To think each tiny number represents a person who died and there are millions of them, is unimaginable.
This was very somber and heavy place to visit. However, the memorial is quite clean and well kept, despite being in downtown Boston. The writings and names are wonderfully done. I definitely recommend visiting this if you're in downtown Boston.
Memorial is well done. The visual of all the numbers etched into the glass walls of the towers and multiple testimonials really hit you hard.
Beautiful and heart wrenching memorial - it breaks your heart to see it but it’s important to never forget. Each tower represents a different extermination camp.
This is a memorial that makes a statement. It was done is quietl and repectfully dignified manner. I cried looking at all of those numbers and the statements made by survivors.
Don’t miss this! Make sure you visit while in Boston.
It is beautiful and leaves one with the lasting impression of the suffering from the Holocaust.
Went here on an art history tour for my class and it was extremely powerful. the towers had made me cry about a total of 6 times, and despite all the life and urban setting, when you go through the towers and youre reading all the texts its almost like the city sounds melt away and youre left with the bare bones of a memorial, teaching you about loss. to remember not only that this happened, but to remember there is always a way to help out and speak up.
Something you can never, ever, ever forget. This is a solid approach to memorializing something that is hard to approach because of all that the holocaust is in history. Sitting just feet from the many examples of the fight for American freedoms, this memorial reminds us of why human freedoms are always worth fighting for regardless of when or where.
Amazing and touching. It was very well made and it really puts in perspective how large of a moment in history the Holocaust really was. This is by far one of the best places in Boston to visit.
Absolutely gut wrenching. The steam through the grates makes it feel more real and really pulls you into the experience.
Gorgeous and moving memorial. Really quite an experience to walk through and think of. I would highly recommend visiting it, moving.
Cool area that stops and make you think about the history of this event. Definitely worth checking out
I'm not sure that I can add anything. It is a very moving moment and for many an eye opener. Very nice architectural concept.
Wow this is an easily overlooked spot in downtown Boston, and I say that just because I sure did overlook it for years. It's a simple open air memorial, more of a public park really, wedged into quite a small space. I'd say plan to give this exhibit at least 30 minutes, but there is no doubt it can be worthy of more depending on the individual and the circumstances. Moving, effective, educational, inspiring...I will be back for more on my next visit to Boston. Highest recommendation.
Very powerful memorial. It's right along the freedom trail so you won't miss it.
You will never be the same after you experience this exhibit. Be aware that you'll want to leave extra time to reflect afterward as the experience is extremely intense.
A chilling experience. Thank you to those heros that fought to end the holocaust. #NeverForget
The glass towers give a sense of hope, yet they are inscribed with prisioner numbers and harrowing quotes of people who suffered. Worth visiting to remember those who died.
Very moving, the numbers on the glass....so many lives lost. The steam coming in from the vents, the significance was almost lost on me. Worth the very small detour from Quincy market
If this was meant to evoke emotions, well it worked. This is a powerful memorial that reminds you of how much of a horror the past was, and why it must stay in the past.
Incredibly touching memorial that is beautifully done. Seeing it at night with the mist rising takes your breath away
It would be wrong of me to try and capture the feeling of this place in mere words. The Numbers...... The Numbers etched into the glass. The stories of the slain. .
Amazing. Beautiful. Sad. Heartbreaking. All in one trip.
Very sobering. Even though the memorial is on a busy, public street the way it is set up allows for concentration and reflection.
All I can say is that this place is very humbling and very moving. A simple walk thru the memorial only takes around 10 minutes but, instead, spend more time here. Look all the way up the glass walls and see those six million numbers, imagining all of those people and what those numbers stood for. The vapor that rises up from the floor, reminding us of the gas chambers, is absolutely chilling. Take the time to read quotes that make it almost impossible not to cry. A quote towards the end, while I can't remember it's exact words, has meaning that I'll never forget. "If we don't stand for each other now, when it comes to your turn, who will stand with you?"
History lesson and a reminder for us to help each other. Stay together or die seperately. Really eerie feeling but a quick spot to look through.
Especially in these polarizing times, the memorial is a poignant reminder of where extremism can lead. The unfathomable array of numbers on the glass and choice saying engraved around the site should both be celebrated and give us all pause. A great place for reflection, somber consideration of self, and rememberance of a time where an entire demographic was targeted for elimination from the human genome.
I thought this was a mister to cool off from the heat when I noticed the numbers... Then as I walked through I realized the sparkles at the bottom represents the ashes of the lost souls. Dang this is a heavy memorial. Highly recommend a visit tho.
Touching. Thoughtful
Well done. Worth the detour. Take the time to read.
Free for all, open all the time.
Worth a visit. Bit of a shame they put it in between two roads but it's still a beautiful memorial.
Gorgeous and touching memorial with powerful quotes as you make your way through.
A phenomenal memorial, anyone giving less than 5 stars is insane. The thought put into it is fantastic, and despite being in the middle of a busy city you still can walk in and be completely in your own world.
No fee to get in, no staff, don't plan on this being more than a 25 minute experience unless you have planned something special. My group only took about 10 minutes to go through but you could take more or less depending on how impacted you are by the memorial.
Heartbreaking. They did a marvelous job describing servivor account.Great job
Touching memorial
Very sad reading the stories In the glass, I recommend taking 10 minutes to read and to find out what the numbers mean.
In some ways more effective than a stand alone museum. I saw many people happen upon it, interrupting their walk through Boston, not knowing what it was until they began reading the stories and tilting their heads up to see the staggering amount of serial numbers displayed. Beautifully done, gets me every time.
Very moving and well thought through memorial.
Whew. Powerful Memorial.
A very simple, yet powerful memorial located right in a very popular area. The plaques at the entrance and along the path all are reminders about what happened during a very dark period of time. Take your time and read everything.
This memorial is one way to keep the memories of these people alive while reminding us that hate is not the answer.
Beautiful memorial to the 6 million who were murdered, just because they were Jewish. It’s quite an emotional experience to see the countless names engraved into the glass, although I think it’s important that people come and stop by to pay their respects.
A really excellent find that was thought provoking and free
I love visiting this at night and walking through the glass towers with the names. The fog rises and the light illuminates the names etched in glass. I recommend pausing to read some of the names and take in the sheer amount of loss that occurred. I think it's a lovely tribute. Just be sure to avoid that area during drinking times on Friday/Saturday. Definitely makes it lose some of its beauty and a different location would have been better than across from a handful of bars.
It's a place to get an insight of what happened during the holocaust. It gives you the names of both the victims and survivors. It highlights stories from some of the survivors. Very beautiful at night but still solemn and sombre inside. Great place to keep the memories, lest we forget. We are all one people.
This memorial is very well designed. Very touching and emotional experience
A great little installation of stories of the Holocaust. A must stop by if you're visiting the Freedom Trail areas.
It is a walk through memorial with the lives of multiple people during the Holocaust Era. Very humbling and eye-opening to view. It provides a remembrance of things that could occur again. The walk can be an emotional journey for some. The glass towers are illuminated if dark. It rained while I was there so I went back a second time.
A very heartfelt memorial with stories of those who survived.
Great place to visit and read some valuable quotes.
Beautiful structure. Strong emotions.
Over 6,000,000 women, men, and children lost their lives by the Nazis. To put this in perspective, that's 2,002 times more than 9/11 (2,996 people). That's like a 9/11 tragedy EVERY DAY for almost 5.5 years!!
Such an emotional memorial. I would highly recommend visiting this. Inscribed on these six glass towers are the millions of Holocaust victims, along with steam rising through all of them. It's a very surreal experience.
Well set up. It's a place that you have to see when in Boston. Really makes you think and has a way of making you remember just how bad it was but a the same time honors all those that went thru such a tragic event. History will repeat itself if we forget and memorials like this help to remember by bringing honor to all those that were sacrificed for no reason.
Heart-breaking and brutal monument, "nice" walk through. Pumping hot air from underneath while reading the memoirs is a thoughtful addition that enriches the experience of the visit.
Emotional experience....
They have steam coming up the group, which if you stand right there makes it hard to breathe. That makes you start to wonder how they suffered so much more than just steam for long periods of time. There are quotes from the survivors of the holocaust, which is from someone's son, daughter, brother, sister, parent of the people that were killed. Gives a sick feeling knowing how the survivors must have felt looking at such gruesome things happening to the ones they love.
If you r in Boston I recommend go there and spent a little time
Nice tribute, worth a visit, though directly across from lots of bars. If you're over at the Boston City Market, swing by for a somewhat unique tribute. The main problem with this, however, is it is directly across the street from lots of bars, so the ambiance is lacking for full reflection.
The design was interesting. Reading the short stories/quotes from survivors was very moving. It's a great place for reflecting on the past, while hoping that nothing like the holocaust ever happens again.
This Holocaust memorial is an absolute must-visit if you are in Boston. It's free & right downtown and very informative. Walk through glass buildings engraved with numbers. Each glass building has steam rising from the ground beneath it so you feel the weight & gravity of remembrance in a very poignant fashion.
Powerful and sobering. A fitting monument to the many who were slaughtered by the hands of pure evil. Very emotional experience to walk through this and remember those that lost so much.
Very touching and highly emotional place to visit in Boston. A must-see for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the horrific things that happened during WWII. This is also a great opportunity to reflect on who we really want to be as humans for the future.
Very nice and well designed.
This exhibit left a lasting impression on me. The horror of it all is overwhelming. I had a friend who stumbled into one of these camps while Hitlers army was retreating. His description was fitting. The exhibit is not a tribute. It is a look into the minds of evil men.
Walked through on August 15th (just after it had been tragically vandalised) and it was beautiful to see all of the *peaceful* anti-hate, pro-equality gatherers in the wake of this. Well worth a visit to anyone living in or around Boston, or those visiting the area - it's a must to preserve this memory so the same will never reoccur.
Poignant to see the 6 towers representing different concentration camps with glass walls filled with serial numbers of the people killed at each one. Plus at the base there's grating on the ground with LED lights underneath and steam eminiating upwards symbolizing the gas chambers.
Steam rises from gratings in the pavement inside the tall vertical square glass shafts, together meant to evoke the gas and incineration chambers in the concentrations camps. The effect is much more powerful in cold, dry weather, when the steam is more visible and envelops you more as you walk through the bases of the shafts.
This memorial doesn't have the overwhelming power of, say, the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial on the Mall in DC, partially because it is squeezed onto a sidewalk that's used to get from the Public Market to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. But, if you're here at a quiet time or you can tune out the distractions, it can be quite powerful, nonetheless.
Solemn and beautiful. A must see for anyone visiting Boston. Located near the freedom trail, it details a period in history we should never forget. And reminds us that if we aren't careful, it can always happen again
Beautiful memorial that is uplifting and heart touching at the same time. The mist gives me the feeling it's Zylon gas coming into the death trap shower room.
You can't help but walk out of this place with a changed outlook on humanity. Had a lump in my throat by the time I finished..
I am so sorry about the damage you have been receiving. I am 74 and was brought up as most people my age to respect other peoples property. I have heard people say the Holocaust never happened. Those people need to spend some time at places like your and at the Holocaust Museum in D.C. I have been there 3 times and still have not made it thru the whole Museum. I have a lot of German in my family and that may be why, but I think everyone I have talked to that have been there say they come away a different person. No matter how noisy it is outside as soon as the door closes you can hear a pen drop. A lot of feeling is in that building. I hope that all this hatred stops toward anyone, but I DO HOPE they quit bothering your memorial and memorials in other locations. If courts just slap there hands it will not help, they need to hit them hard. And yes, I was law enforcement for over 35 years and Undersheriff at Hays, Kansas for many years and Chief at Hill City. That area is over 50% Volga German.
Best Wishes,
Wayne Wilson
This is a powerful and moving monument that shows the actual number of people who were euthanized during the Holocaust in a very simple and not at all pretentious. It's really just rows and rows of numbers on glass, so simple yet so powerful and moving.
Nice tribute but a little disappointed this time around because some of the engraving is hard to read (colored font has faded too much).
A moving memorial, with overwhelming towers containing the numbers of millions of those slain at 6 different concentration camps
The monuments erected are a work of art that makes you aware of what should never happen again to humanity. The numbers on the glass represent a person that died because of one man's hatred. Millions....
An excellent memorial. It's a great reminder to let the people of Boston, as well as everyone else, to not forget what happened in Europe during the war, and to not let history repeat itself.
Breathtaking - Inspiring - Sad - Triumphant - NEVER AGAIN ! Your Faith, Your hair color, your ethnicity, your gender, your job, your family - no one should exclude themselves from seeing and feeling this place. Go, learn, spread Peace.
Its a must see. Its free and never crowded. Its unique and meaningful in its design. I couldn't make it from one side to the other without emotion puring from me. You have to see it to understand
Very emotional display, really puts a visual on what a million is, times six. Six glass towers each inscribed with one million numbers of holocaust victims. A MUST stop on trip to Boston. Be prepared for the emotional experience.
Emotionally depressing that one Nation can be responsible for 6 million deaths if men woman and children. Gratitude towards the people of Boston for erecting this memorial and etching the 6 million numbers on the glass towers.
A really, *really* stunning memorial that shows the human side of an event that can be difficult to take in. It runs right next to the Freedom trail, but you do need to step off the trail to see it.
Open 24 hrs this outdoor installation is a dramatic and powerful testimony to the mass murders of jews and other minorities by the Nazis during the time around WW2. Good place to go if the wait at restaurants at Haymarket or Fanueil hall are long.
Incredibly moving. Unfortunately, most tourist see it a quick pass through and shove you aside as they try to pass.
Make the most of this beautiful memorial
A good place to visit with engraved texts on the floor. The hot gas in the glass buildings was remarkable and made us honor the bravery of those who were killed and those who survived the Holocaust.
Another beautifully maintained property swept and detrashed daily by Clean Corners/Bright hope. A solemnly beautiful oasis amid the bustle of morning commuters.
a great memorial for the holocaust victims. kinda eerie that instead of names they put the number of each of the prisoners that were tattoo'd on their arms. visit on a cold april night, made me really reflect on the place and the people that suffered under the germans during WWII
very eeire atmosphere. the vapot that rises is such a nice simple beautiful touch. really gets to you. reading all the things that happened.
Sobering, beautiful, tragic memorial. Take your time with this one.
This was somber, but amazing. Only reason not 5 stars is I wish they had more explaining what each tower, numbers, steam etc. Maybe a little excerpt on the designer and what everything represented.
This is a remarkable monument along the Freedom Trail to those who died during the genocide of the second World War. Six tall columns etched with the numbers of those murdered. Walking through it is a somber experience with stories and quotes from those who lived and survived it.
Beautiful and meaningful memorial. You can see it from far away and recognize its glass structure. Names are carved in the metal.

Everyone should visit here if they come to boston
It's in the heart of the city & a must visit place. You'll be left with mixed feelings of architecture marvel of the site and of very touched feeling when you read the paragraphs of what happened to innocent people over the decades.
A striking sculpture which features linear glass towers arrayed along Union Street in one of Boston's oldest neighborhoods, adjacent to tourist traps like Union Oyster House and Faneuil Hall. Look closely at the glass and you will see thousands upon thousands, millions really, of tiny numerals etched in. Those are the serial numbers assigned by the Nazis to their victims. It is a haunting effect.
An extremely moving and significant memorial. A sobering experience especially in the light of the world right now. Highly recommend a visit.
Amazing place. You will enjoy.
A really strong memorial in the city of Boston. Emphasizes the impact of the Holocaust, and provides plenty of history on the Jewish community in the early twentieth century
A place for self reflection.
Sobering and powerful.
Beautiful memorial. Definitely walk through it if you're ever in Boston and haven't done so.
I have no words but please visit
Side note: I felt super weirded out by the fact that "the donors" had to be listed at a holocaust memorial...
Not my first visit and even though I don't have a direct link to this horrific tragedy, visiting this memorial always has a profound effect on me.
It's hard to 'like' a holocaust memorial, but this one's pretty effective. It's so effective that it gets vandalised. We should not forget and the endless numbers make clear the horror in a compact way. Tikkun Olam.
Very emotional as you walk through it.
Very heart wrenching.
This is a remarkable memorial for the people who died during Second World War. The numbers written brings tears and very sombrer place. It is near Faneuil hall.
Great design and powerful message. I was very positively surprised that they managed to include other victims of Nazi Germany- such as homosexuals, Romani and Slavic people.
Beautiful and tastefully done memorial of people that were lost during a time that we must NEVER AGAIN allow to happen!
Stunning! Such a nice place of remembrance and honor.
Very moving....such a beautiful tribute to our loved ones lost with crimes against humanity.
This is an amazing place to visit. Makes you really think about our history on this planet. Worth visiting and it should only take 30 minutes at most.
A well done walk-through monument documenting facts and first hand experiences. Very moving!
A very moving tribute to Holocaust victims and survivors, including Jehovah's Witnesses.
Very well done memorial. Highly recommend taking time to pay respect.
Seeing the millions of numbers go up as high as you can see is an incredibly haunting representation of the Holocaust. I think all visitors to Boston should stop here.
Great learning place for any age, powerful messages and quotes, plenty of places to sit down and most of it is in the shade.
A beautiful sculpture carrying on a necessary and tragic legacy.
An interesting walk through one of histories darkest moments. Very chilling to think of all those who suffered and see the numbers in person.
I've seen various memorials but this one was haunting and is one of the few that has stuck with me. Definitely worth seeing.
A very touching tribute!
A beautiful memorial.

Sehenswert!

(Translation) The Holocaust Memorial in Union Street Park. It is lit up at night and is very beautiful, but as the name suggests, the Nazi control numbers of those who lost their lives in the Nazi genocide (Holocaust) are engraved. As you get closer, you can see the numbers, which gives you a solemn feeling. I just pray for the rest of the world, but it seems that the 6 represents the 6 camps. What do Germans think of this? The Holocaust certainly happened, so it can't be helped, but I hope it doesn't lead to blaming the wonderful country of Germany. I don't think it's a good analogy, but I hope people don't hate Japan as a country when it comes to the Korean movement to install comfort women statues (although I'm skeptical about the comfort women themselves). Well, it's not easy for Korean people to understand ( ;∀;)
