Reviews of Harvard Art Museums
Excellent medium-size collection covering a lot of ground in a funny haphazard way. You can find threads that bring together the different parts of the museum, and still enjoy the jumps in styles and epochs, geographies, cultures, and media. Highly recommended the museum nights on the last Thursday of the month (free entry, beer and food in the main court--not free but at fair prices--and music). It gets busy, though!
Thank you for making this accessible to all with free admission on Sundays. My daughter and I were visiting Boston from Florida for the weekend and we stayed in the Cambridge area. This was on my daughter’s to do list while here. Our flight was delayed on Sunday, so we were able to spend a good three hours here before heading to the airport. They have a coat check, lockers and a luggage hold which were very convenient! Thank you again.
It’s pressure experience to able back after so long times. Everything was nice and well organized with lovely helpful staff.
I booked my tickets online in advance. When I entered there were ready facemask and hand sanitizers. It was optional to wear it but most of the visitors were wearing it or at least social distance.
The museum has free locks, everywhere possibility to scan QR code for tour information, map, place exhibition. They are having handicap entrance, elevators and they are borrowing walkers, wheelchairs or just mobile seats. So the museum is really open and accessible for everyone.
I am in awe. Never regreting it. The collections are quite impressive, which was kinda unexpected as I wasn't expecting a standard to be as good as other famous museums globally. Grateful to have had this opportunity to visit 🙏🏼
A must-go if you ever go to Cambridge!
The Harvard Art Museums offer a mediocre collection of art in a beautiful environment that could be so much better. Also, if you are not a student or Cambridge resident, you must pay an entrance fee to see the collection and exhibits. I'm only giving them 3 stars because nothing in the collection or exhibits really impressed me. You get to see some nice art, but nothing huge, like the 20' Rothko that hangs in the Harvard Dining Hall where it used to get food and chair dents in it until it was restored and protected behind a plexiglass screen. None of the art is particularly large. If you want to be impressed go to Yale's Art Museums - they are great, much larger than the Harvard museum, AND they are FREE!
Lastly, Harvard claims it has 3 art museums. What it never tells you is that they are simply different collection all in the same museum building. The museum isn't that large and you only need a couple of hours to see it. I found it very disappointing compared to other art venues available in Massachusetts and all of New England. Many with no entry fee.
Highly highly recommend this place. Keep 3-4 hours place to be able to appreciate this place. It is one of the museums with a very diverse and extensive collection of artwork. If you know art you’d know they’ve spent quite a bit money to create this collection.
😎how many times have I been to this place? 3-4
👩🏻summary: not too big not too crowded. One of the museums with a diverse and extensive collection of artwork.
💁🏻♀️would I revisit this place? Yes
Had a great time indulging myself in various types of art. Spent about 2 hours looking around. There are 4 floors, lifts available, but you may go around using the stairs. Different themes every floor.
Lovely museum. Highly recommended researving tickets online. Must show vaccination. Cost can be free if you choose the right times if you're a MA resident or meet orher criteria. Parking pass can be reserved online for $10.
Great university collection. Free admission on Sundays. Free to Harvard ID holders always. There are lockers for coats. The conservation area on the upper floors is cool.
Smaller than expected, and expensive at full price, but plenty of opportunities to save (Cambridge resident, free admission on Sundays, student discounts, etc.). Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, O'Keeffe, and other major artists have work here. Definitely reserve your slot in advance.
Beautiful museum in a great location with some iconic art pieces done. Amazing experience. The staff was kind, their bathrooms were very clean, and it was quiet.
Wonderful museum. Great permanent collection. Wonderfully prepared exhibits. Free Sundays!
Lovely art collection! I went also to a few of their social free monthly event, nice vibe but I think they have potential to grow
Had our wedding reception there, the staff were fantastic. Our guests had private viewing of ground floor artwork.
I really impressed from the large collections of arts from the globe. You can find brief about it just pasted near of the art. On Sunday it is free and free for students.
The art is great. Went on a weekend and there was surprisingly not a lot of people. Didn't see all of the art but what we saw was great!
Finding parking on campus can be painful. But I enjoyed the collection here a lot. It’s free every Sundays what else can you ask for.
Good collection of artifacts and paintings. You need about 4-5 hours there to cover all the exhibitions.
I had no idea just how amazing this place is. It's almost too full of some of the greatest art on the planet. So many of the greats are here.
But what really thrilled me was just how casually chilled this place is. It's the nicest gallery visit I've ever had.
But don't try to do this in fly by visit. You'll regret it. Give it the 4-5 hours minimum that it deserves.
Can't wait to go back.
Renoir, Picasso, Degas, Monet, Klimt, Miro, Sargent there's modern art, sculpture, metal artifacts, clay works ...it goes on and on.
Enjoy it.
I recommend you take life to the top and work your way down for a coffee at the bottom.
Only $20
I can’t believe they have such incredible collections here and 6 floors of arts! Amazing
Beautiful and not too big.
Enough to really enjoy and discover. Not overwhelming like some museums. As an English man I have to commend their tea. We'll made and tasty..
The pigment collection on the top floor is an unexpected joy.
I've been coming here pretty regularly since they reopened a few years ago, and I like it more each and every time. I think their rotating exhibitions are spectacular, the permanent collection galleries are fun to walk through what with all the drawers and other interactive stations (like the magnifying glass above the Sumerian coins on the third floor) and the museum store is my favorite for shopping for gifts.
Amazing collection of art and a great place to visit in Boston. I visited during the Halloween for a Halloween themed costume party, great experience.
Definitely worth taking the time to visit this gem. The well curated exhibits beautifully display works spanning from ancient history through the Impressionists to modern works. We were delighted to see the variety of artists represented.
It’s a good place to spend a whole day or an afternoon. 🥰 …
Beyond expectations. Saw Picasso, Monet and many master's painting displayed here. Very fulfilling experience
The first and only time I've been here was a few years ago on the day that I found out that one of my friends had died. I was able to quietly sit in front of one of these beautiful paintings/ art and process what had happened. I am very grateful that I was able to have that space. I plan on returning someday.
Great selection of art from Harvard's collection. They regularly throw parties for the public inside the museum. Free admission for the public during party nights, but you need to register before hand.
Great place to visit! There are 5 floors but only three with exhibits. It's a very cool place and the cafe has some great drinks too.
Very nice museum with variety of exhibitions! It’s free and open to everyone on Sunday. Don’t forget to bring your vaccination card and ID for entry.
This is a very doable museum if you have an afternoon to spend in Harvard Square. They have a very nice variety of eras and artists represented in the collections. The lobby seating is usually full of people studying instead of cafe patrons but that’s to be expected. The staff is friendly and polite. I’m grateful to have such a lovely art museum nearby!
What a wonderful surprise to spend a few hours at the Harvard art museum. It's a gem you can dip into with zero expectations...and almost certainly come out having encountered a few greats as well as made a few new discoveries. It is, in short, a fabulous pot-pourri.
I was knocked over by the Maurice Wertheim Gallery. Could this be, square foot for square foot, the finest room of impressionists I have ever seen? It just might be, it just might be. Monet Renoir, Van Gogh, Degas...all present with fine, fine examples of their work. The first floor in general is just rife with delights both celebrated and unexpected. The greatness continues with almost all the abstract expressionist represented. You will also certainly discover artists new to you at their very best.
As you drift up it's a little less intense and you can discover rooms full of treasures still but a little less concentrated at your own pace. The museum does pepper more contemporary artists' work throughout. Some of it is alright but it's a real challenge to pull from the present day and hold it up to the past in a way that isn't incongruous. I would challenge the curators to dig a little deeper...are they seeking to find linkages or contrasts?
The general environment of the museum is beautiful and serene, worth a visit in and of itself. The Lucy Cafe is a hidden gem where I enjoyed a cardamom latte and the barista took simply one of my favorite pics of my entire trip.
"The contrast of the light across your face is really incredible...and you lipstick does pick up on the red tulips," she opined of her handiwork. I cannot agree more and how perfectly on-brand for an Art Museum to have excellent photographer baristas!
Such a peaceful and beautiful museum. Has a wide array of art on every floor and a really cool gift shop!
Also, I don't recommend wearing heels since it's very quiet!
The museum is a very accessible art history course with dozens of exceptional art pieces. The staff is very friendly & helpful.
Ran into some trouble with the curatorial plaques… a good example is the one that accompanies a full length George Washington portrait . Here the viewer is led to understand the great dilemma the museum has in displaying a representation of a founding father remembered largely for his “cowardice.” This is not a conclusion most students of American history would draw from even a casual glance at our first President’s accomplishments.
Unbelievably good painting collection for such a small space. Have been there for number of times and will go again. Location is nice too, lively college atmosphere.
Went on a free last Thursday of the month night. Definitely a 5-star experience for a free museum, but not if I had to pay admission. There was a DJ (?) and the music was pretty loud but not a dealbreaker. I had a good time looking at art!
Amazing art collection including impressionists to renaissance. A rich museum in masters (Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, etc), including some interesting constructivist artists (Joaquin Torres Garcia). Plan to spend 3-4 hours to truly enjoy each floors. Café available on main floor as well as free lockers in lieu of coat check.
Amazing!!! Very good collection of Chinese antique,. The best Jade collection outside of China .
And very rare paintings from Dunhuang . Breathtaking.
The museum is not to big compare to Washington national musemu or metropolitan museum of art new York but it has very high end piece .
The Jun ware collection is also the best in quality and quantity outside of China.
If you are in Boston and you are into arts , it is a place that must go .
I can not believe this place is free on Sundays. I enjoyed every step i took inside this museum it was marvelous.
Wide range of exhibits in a cool space. I went on a “Harvard Art Museum by Night” day, which is held on the last Thursday of each month if I am correct.
Great place. If you are in the area worth to stop by and explore the art exhibits. There is an entrance fee of $20 for the general public. Not sure of there is a student or senior discount. They also have lockers to store your items. Museum is a good size but u can get thru in couple of hours depending on how much of an art fan u are !
What an exhibit of art. The diversity from contemporary to digital to artifacts is phenomenal. Must visit especially with the FREE admissions!
Excellent. Spent a happy hour or so here. Caught the end of free Sunday. Great galleries. Didn’t realise so many famous works here. It’s a must see.
Enjoyed free evenings last Thursday of the month
A perfect medium size art museum, plenty of variety, but not too overwhelming. I was able to get through 2 of 3 floors in about an hour and a half.
Just loved our visit there! Can't believe the collections in this place. Amazing works there from Renoir to Van Gogh to Picasso to Matisse..
The new building is absolutely stunning. The Museum itself is a major teaching Museum. It has works from virtually all civilizations throughout history. Some of the paintings are iconic and everyone will recognize them. Others I haven't seen before. This may be a teaching Museum, but it's actually quite large. Make sure you will allot 1 to 3 hours to see it.
a lot of valuable exhibits, but i think the presentation can be made more interesting and the words or prints are really a bit too small to read
Staff here was amazing, especially Abdullah who told us so much about the museum and the different art pieces. He was extremely friendly and knew so much!
The “Renzo Piano Nobile” of renaissance architecture organized by level. The ground floor galleries inside the historic building still seem more comfortable than the new wing.
Wow! The Harvard Art Museum had so many interesting artifacts. Make sure you allow a 2 hour minimum to go through. We were there for about 3 hours. The Harvard University Campus is amazing also.
It has a nice collection of art, mostly from the Renaissance during the time I visited. Free on Sundays for anyone interested.
Loved this museum. Not too many people there. So many incredible works of art. Wow.
Great Master Art Collection!!! I enjoyed a lot
Such an interesting and eclectic place. I've always loved it, visit every time I'm in the city.
A nice Art Museum with a collection across Mediaeval, East Asian, Egyptian, Romanian art.
A plus is that there is a coat room where you can store your belongings freely.
Pricey to get in and pricy to park. But-if you like museums it is a mus see. Plan on 3 hours or more. Cameras welcome. Nice mixture of times and media's .
So amazing! Well worth it and active duty free.
I had no idea they had such a fabulous collection for such a small museum. Free to Cambridge residents too. Amazing find.
Impressive collection but high admission entrance.
80% art museum + 20% art school! A lot of stuff and deliberately arranged. If you like all kinds of paintings and sculptures, 4+ hours would be the estimate spent time. Will never regret visiting this one plus it is free for college students
Cool museum! We were looking forward to its opening! This is a must have if you've visited Boston. Remember: Each Sunday is for free!
What an outrageously fabulous museum. Full of treasures. Cannot go 2 feet without stumbling upon something priceless. As good as any of the big city museums I’ve been to around the world except you don’t have to walk as far to get to the “good stuff” because it’s everywhere. Could spend a lifetime here studying the collection.
Great museum with a small but solid collection ranging from historic to 20th century art.
Great experience, we love Picassos paintings from different stages of his work as well Henry Moors sculptures.
One of the best museums I have ever seen. We visited on Sunday which is free admission. Hope I would have chance to see pros working on the artwork on the very top floor.
Excellent medium-size collection covering a lot of ground in a funny way
It’s worth going if you’re in the area. Adds to the Harvard experience! I’m more into modern art but it’s still interesting.
Did not know Sundays are free til we got there ! Added bonus ! Very nice gallery.
Some of the best private collections in the US are here. Amazing pieces from the most revered artists known and unknown are here. The building is beautiful too. No doubt one of my favorites.
Last Thursday of every month is free entrance from 5-9pm with drinks and in DJ in patio but need to book online, check Facebook events or Eventbrite. Great atmosphere.
Nice Museum, beautiful pieces of art. When we visited it was free, but I don’t think that’s always the case.
If you visiting a Boston you should go and see this place
It’s amazing
A must visit if visiting Harvard. Very Interesting paintings, sculptures, coins, artifacts dating back upto 1000 BCE. Free for Facultly/Staff/Students.
Never visited before and really should have! Some really great art, especially the Impressionist collection
Very great place with a lot of masterpieces to admire. Highly recommended!
Excellent museum designed by Renzo Piano! Atrium is worth a visit!
Nice collection, even better that I had a Harvard student take me so we got in for free. Worth a visit, my favorite section was the East Asian art collection.
Great art collection and a hood mix to hopefully keep all interested / engaged!
Picasso, monet, Manet, degas ... and many many more! amazing collection ! Not too overcrowded and a very well maintained building!
Lots of beautiful fine ate pieces. Just make sure to read the parking signs because the police are really rude.
Awesome newly reopened facility with a world class collection on display. Well run so feels safe throughout yet provides enjoyable comfort for enjoying the varied and really quite incredible collection of historic art. Have your vax card for entry.
Such a wonderfull place to visit. It's well laid out, quiet and had a little bit of everything. Worth the visit and there's plenty of sites to see around Harvard Uni too. Had an easy relaxing day trip.
Free on Sundays. Great museum to spend an afternoon at.
Beautiful museum with a varied and very interesting collection!
Nice museum with an eclectic collection of artifacts from ancient Byzantine to modern US.
Covid vaccination is required. Tickets are $20. Make sure to make a reservation in advance.
You should expect to spend an hour per each of the four exhibition floors.
Always a joy to visit here. Nice mix of old classics, antiquities, and modern art, nicely mounted, well annotated, and perfectly lit. Hard to resist the Monets, Picassos, etc, but I often find the special exhibits on the third floor to be the most interesting.
Great collection of French impressionism, German expressionism, names like Lyonel Feininger, Pablo Picasso, fon Yavlensky, Claude Monet, old masters. The architect of the building is Renzo Piano
Great exhibitions and free entry on Sunday!
Top class museum with a wealth of exhibits, friendly staff and free entry to Cambridge residents. I love it here.
One place you should visit!!!
You shall not be here merely for its collections but for the architecture.
Great collection. Too bad about the Sackler connection. Some sort of statement about what Havard has done to force even greater responsibility would help to encourage more visitors.
Very good collection and free admission on Sundays.
I really liked this museum. The collections and architecture are outstanding. Free for those with student ID’s. In my opinion, this was much better than the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
I didn't have much expectation for a US School Museum since I have travelled Europe a lot, but it was actually very interesting and very likeable!
It is totally worth a visit.
You can see lots of interesting artifacts here
From Egypt to China
actually the best museum cafe atmosphere
Great art pieces beautiful building worthy to visit along with the campus
They have quite a few famous artists. Was bigger than I thought it would be.
What an awesome museum. Now even bigger and better than ever. Worth a trip to Cambridge from anywhere.
The museum is very clean and organized. The selection of art (my wife is interested in art, me...sort of) was varied and interesting, with a large selection of beautiful paintings, sculpture and historical pieces. The security team there is very friendly and helpful....front desk staff not so much but it was one person acting that way and I'm sure there are many other helpful employees here. Still 5 stars as my wife had a wonderful time!
A nice surprise as we went just to find an indoor activity on a cold day. Plan an hour or so in this lovely galley space. Bring your college Id for free admission!
Great place ... worth the visit ...worth the price ... if you show up late towards closing time ask for a 2nd day pass
Very accessible Museum -well laid out. Wonderful Maurice Wertheim collection! Enjoyed it!
The art selection is exquisite. But then they still have the Sackler name on the museum and one of the galleries.
Free on Sundays
Loved all the collections
Unbelievable art collection in a beautiful building. Not to be missed.
Nice museum with lots of artwork and artifacts
Inspiring arts and helpful staff 👌 definitely should check out …
Amazing selection and free on Sundays! The best small museum with a broad variety I have been to. I was so excited to see the Pre Raphaelite room!
An amazing collection. Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and so much more. Truly impressive.
We went on a Sunday so it was free admission. Amazing museum!
Fantastisch museum in a beautiful building. The collection has a bit of everything: from Early Modernism to Ancient China and from Impressionism to Medieval Art. It's large enough to keep you occupied for a while (I stayed 3 hours and saw everything), but not so large that it's overwhelming. Every artwork has a description. The museum cafe is small, but nice.
Fantastic art museum... Comparable to the Museum of Fine Arts. Some outstanding pieces including Monet and stuff. Came here with my Brazilian friend and she loves it too. We had free entrance cause we are students. 5/5 stars would def recommend...
So this museum is pretty huge, way bigger than I had expected because of the multiple levels. They have a wide variety of art do you should definitely be able to find something that you like. The weird thing about this place was that you could get coffee right by the entrance to one of the rooms, but still inside the building, and there are no signs saying that you should not take the drinks into the gallery. So my wife and I were yelled at after a few minutes of being in the gallery. In hindsight it should have been fairly obvious that it's not allowed, but I would definitely suggest signs, especially because of the close proximity of the coffee area to one of the rooms in the gallery.
One of the city's best art museums. Very modern with a great selection of art.
Lovely space, clearly organized, fantastic collection, reasonably priced -- wish the $15 included free or discounted admission to the Natural History Museum also, though. Greatly appreciated the written descriptions of each piece...I found them much more interesting and helpful than those at the Museum of Fine Arts.
Really great art. Small but powerful art collection
Visited here 2016 in November. It's a small museum but with impressive collections. Not only worth exploring Harvard but this is worth a visit. This is inside Harvard University complex. Wheelchair friendly. Welcoming atmosphere with very friendly and helpful staff. There's a washroom here and suitable for all ages especially young children.I was staying in Somerville and walked here which was doable. Worth exploring. Eclectic collection worth exploring.
A well organized museum with art works covering hundreds of years. Good worldwide representation of artworks from nearly all the geographical parts of the world. The artworks on display were of high quality. The ticket is affordable and spaces for relaxation are comfortable.
It’s a bit pricey but they have a wonderful collection. It’s all centered around a courtyard too so it’s very easy to get around
There is an amazing collection of art here. I found each exhibit to be an excellent size and enjoyed the wide variety. Student-led tours are a good way to see, think, and learn about pieces you usually wouldn't spend time looking at or comparing.
One of the best museums in the Greater Boston.
Just one block from my photo studio!
My favorite museum in the greater Boston area. They know what they're doing, and it isn't about making more money. A beautiful space, amazing artwork, well placed and well-presented. Excellent lighting.
Great surprise! Small museum but with great pieces of art that can be visited in a nice and quiet atmosphere (uncommon on big museums noway!). Loved some of the remarkable US artists' works that you can find there. Pitty they charge you for visiting, and not on the cheap side.
Amazon museum for sure! Saw a lot of classic artworks!
You will see bigger collections and more important collections, but you will never see such an eclectic assemblage of fine paintings and sculpture anywhere this side of Paris. This is well worth the effort to go to at least once a year.
The museum was in a convenient location by foot, anywhere in Boston when taking the T. I felt annoyed that there was no monetary break for a veteran-priced ticket. Nonetheless, still worth the admission to go and see all of the riches that the Harvard alumni have donated!
Collection of artwork and information that is fascinating to anyone interested in art and history. Staff was helpful. Lockers are available and free to leave your coat and bag to explore the galleries more comfortably. Facilities including bathrooms were extremely clean.
This is a must see destination while in Boston/Cambridge. Every piece is an important work of art. Cezanne next to Renoir next to Degas next to Manet. It goes on and on. Three museums of different collections housed under one roof. All exquisite, enjoyable, educational and stunning. $15 per adult admission. The gallery attendants are kind and helpful. The cafe is a nice spot for a light lunch or to enjoy a beverage. There is a gift shop, too.
I would describe the permanent exhibits here as a “greatest hits album” of Western art. Beyond that, there are some wonderful specimens of ancient Egyptian, roman, and Chinese sculpture and pottery on display as well. For someone who is tenuously familiar with world art, I recommend starting here.
David Smith. Go see The medals of Dishonor 1938-40
Beautiful museum with a ton of Picassos, Impressionist work, and non Western art work too. You can get in for free if you have a military id. Excellently curated, definitely worth a trip if you're in Cambridge. Their coffee shop has great coffee/snacks.
I loved it. Its harvard, what do you expect. My favorite part was the top level digital exhibit.
Updated review: Surprisingly good museum, has very nice collection. However, one of the guards there was so rude and yelled at us don't touch the glass which we didn't touch at all. Then she stared at us and tried to see if she can catch any other chances. Apparently, this old black woman has been rude and racist toward many people, but never get fired or anything. Also, the admission tags are so easy to lose on clothing. Need to improve their management.
This museum is extraordinary! The collection of work is absolutely stunning both in diversity of culture and time periods. Even if you are not an art afficianado you will be awed by their collection. Absolute must if you're in Boston.
Well-organized exhibits of world-class collections with clear and accessible interpretations. Free to the public during certain periods as well!
I attend a class at Harvard University it was an event for the students in my class
Free exhibit and tours for students, which is super nice. Also have class here on lower floors. Great building!
This reopened recently and it is now a beautiful and powerful museum. You could even sit at a table and study in the lobby for a bit, or read a book. It is nice. I would recommend going twice if you want to see the entire collection. If you're a Harvard student, admission is free, if I remember correctly. Way to go!
I was surprised at the quality and quantity of art here. Beautiful art that includes Picasso, Renoir, Miro, Etc... The museum is free if you live in Cambridge - don't forget to bring proof of residency. It's also free on Saturdays from 10am-noon for Massachusetts residents. Highly recommended. It's a short walk from the T.
Really friendly and young staff who enjoys being there! I got in for free with my international student ID which is fantastic. Only thing I would have appreciated more is a clear starting and ending point or a chronologically laid out itinerary
This is a very good museum. Lots of interesting art from all kinds of periods and places. They have some great guest exhibits too. In addition, the building itself is pretty cool, and the cafe is decent.
Lot of walking, but very diverse art, elevators were slow, kind of pricy for a university museum
Has clean and energetic atmosphere great for a date or go alone for a self care date. :) As someone who knows next to nothing about art I was learning new things left and right. The employees were kind and helpful with all my questions on the pieces. If you have a waterbottle or bag they'll ask you to put it in a locker, no extra charge, just dont loose the key!
The art collection is really good. Monet, Picasso, Pissarro, Van Gogh and Cezanne are some of the major featured artists. The collection is spread over 3 floors and there are lockers to check-in your things. There is also a cafe inside with some tables.
The museum is free for students with an ID.
There is also a very nice collection of Asian items dating back to 10th century or earlier.
Did you know BU students get in to Harvard Art Museums for free? Well they do! This is a great set of museums all packed into basically one building, with many religious pieces and a fantastic array of Persian and Japanese art. A great way to spend a couple hours if you are somehow bored in Cambridge.
Very interesting museum with amazing exhibitions
Although I love the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, this is a very refreshing gem across the Charles River that keeps me coming back for the permanent collection, rotations in the Japanese section, and special exhibitions like the current Bauhaus one. It has a great cafe and beautiful indoor courtyard. Some of my favorite, amazing German Expressionist, delightful paintings are here by Franz Marc and Ludwig Ernst Kirchner. Other highlights include two stunning paintings by Gustave Moreau, one by John LaFarge, and my favorite self portrait of Van Gogh. The more I travel, the more I come back and appreciate this place.
Went to two Erasmus lectures in the auditorium -- a great place to look and listen but not so much for note-taking if you're so inclined. Seats are comfy and legroom ample -- they often screen films here. Parking is free in the Broadway Garage (off Felton St.) when the museum hosts special events!
The Fogg Museum is beautifully designed, with a large central open atrium that transitions from traditional to modern architecture as you move upwards. The collections may not be the largest or most comprehensive of any one genre's or artist's work, but they are wonderfully curated, with much consideration put into the narrative of each grouping. If you're a fan of modern art, I highly recommend visiting the Harvard Museums, and the Fogg in particular -- the contemporary art curator does a great job at ensuring a thought provoking experience!
Must visit place at Harvard University
Free for students (high school and Harvard students alike), tons of really interesting tours led by undergraduates that have done more research on the pieces on their tour than I could ever do, and really famous paintings mixed with super cool contemporary pieces where each gallery is it's own message. What more could you want??
The Bauhaus exhibition for the 100th anniversary of the school is amazing
Van Gogh, Ingres, Picasso, Otto Dix, Greek classical period terracotta pottery, Etruscan art, masterpieces in the most important university museum in the United States. The space was completely remodeled by Renzo Piano. #arthistorian @arthistory
Collections are strong and diverse, but it feels as though pieces are presented to check off boxes in a textbook. The galleries make it all feel a bit sterile. Worth seeing but quite expensive and Harvard isn't really hurting for money
This place is great! So many works of art that you read about in books are right there in front of you. When you see them up close you gain a deeper understanding of why these masterpieces are truly treasures.
I loved the variety and quality of the artwork. It's a smaller exhibition than the known big museums but the quality of the pieces is outstanding which combines for a great experience
Simple small nice museum
Fabulous museum. Great collection of American and European painting. Take a look in the room of buddhas. Quiet spot to watch the outside world go by. Wonderful central court in the Italian style. Look out for the Pre-Raphaelite paintings and see if you can spot the same female model appearing in several of them.
One of the greatest museum of the world. Harvard students guidance is the great idea too
A wonderful sized art museum, with a wide and varies collection. The cafe is fantastic as well. $15 dollars if not a Cambridge resident or without a Harvard ID.
This is a hidden gem; overshadowed by the MFA, this museum has great art.
Modern design with simplicity and good lighting while retaining the buildings classic roots. Excellent, smooth facilities and gracious, kind staff. Exhibits were lovely.
A beautiful museum worth visiting
Great collection. The coinage exhibit is worth your time. Spent a relaxed 2 1/2 hours there. I'll go back.
Just steps away from Harvard Square. Comprised of three Harvard museums. The art collections include approximately 250,000 objects in all media, ranging in date from antiquity to the present and originating in North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
World class collection in Cambridge's oldest little schoolhouse down the road. The new building housing the collection is remarkable in and of itself. There are usually events and tours going on, so be sure to check out the website.
The collection is a lot larger than you'd think, and very diverse. There's everything here from Ancient Egypt to Medieval Japan to Modern Germany. It's also free for students.
World class collection, I’ll visit again!
If you visit Cambridge, you should try to go to Harvard Art Museum.
You can see a wide variety of art objects, historical marks, get an insight into many epochs. Not deep, scientific insight, but a glance at the art as a whole, at its diversity and extent. Art learning is a never ending process, isn't it?
Sick art museum. Lots of Van Goghs, Monets, Picasso, Pollock. Hot tips: make sure your flash isn't accidentally on, don't bring your coffee into the museum, those damn tags fall off in two seconds and they will think you didn't pay.
Unexpectedly big with a strong general collection.
If you have a few hours to explore the Harvard museums, go beyond the obligatory Harvard Yard tour and you will not be disappointed.
Visited Bauhaus exhibit. Would have liked to see even more, especially objects and Design side. But building is nice multiple interesting (smaller) exhibits.
Wonderful place with great exhibits, helpful docents, and an inviting atmosphere. I always feel serene at the Fogg Art Museum. Also, the cafe has great stuff!
Beautiful paintings. Famous painters; works you wouldn't believe belong to a college. Free for boston residents on Sunday before noon if you have a proof of residency.
Not as large and not the same feeling as some of the larger museums, but I like some of the collections. Worths a visit (or several visits).
Beautiful building with an amazing indoor atrium.
Priceless collection , if a bit eclectic. You'll see Picasso's, Monet's and Van Gogh's you recognize.
Wonderful place to see all kinds of art. Good cafe on the main floor. They are always having the most interesting special exhibits.
We love this collection and the terrific cafe. The museum is not too large to enjoy in a long visit. I like the scale of the place.
Amazing museum, its really well curated.
5/5.
Friendly staff. A must indoor activity on the campus. Reservation highly recommended.
Nice place to spend an hour or so. They have limited lockers for coats and bags. They also give children sketch books and a pencil to make notes and drawings.
A nice collection and very relaxing environment. Guards are a bit aggressive but in totally understand. Cuase you are protecting Monet and Picasso.
Thoughtful collection of well curated pieces and helpful descriptions. Medium sized museum so you can pretty much cover the whole thing in one day or less.
Terrific refurbished museum, a complete facadeicide, this noble museum was completely renovated in the last few years. Excellent job, visitor friendly, great displays with lots of explanatory notations
The collection is diverse and interesting.
One of my favorite places to go. Yes they do take reservations to have a gathering here. I highly recommend to visit here. If you have received an invitation to go to this venue, definitely recommend to go here.
Top shelf museum with wide ranging collection under excellent curation. Cafe staff knew more about collection than information desk. Good coffee and pastries btw.
Absolutely beautiful works inside housed by an astounding exterior. There's a coffee shop inside with kind baristas. Perfect morning sitting in the naturally lit atrium sipping coffee.
An extremely impressive collection. Staff needs to educate students (I assume they were Harvard students!) on proper museum decorum. Loud and rude.
Cambridge residents get in for free. Just show ID! Lovely courtyard and pieces. On the smaller side but a had a nice layout and vibe.
Wonderful night
An incredible museum and an absolute must see. Took me around 3 hours to get thrugh 3 of the levels and you feel absolutely immersed in the artworks and expositions.
An enjoyable, relatively small but very compact museum. Not too many visitors, it helps to appreciate the exhibitions. Loved it!
The Harvard Art Museums is part of Harvard University and comprise three museums: the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum. The art collections are particularly good for World History study. The collections cover a vast history of art, ranging from Ancient Greece and Rome, China, the Middle East, as well as great masterpieces from Europe and the Americas. This museum has a few masterpiece such as Woman in the night by famous Spanish painter Joan Miro.
Reopened November 2014.
Awesome renovation work.
Great design of the facility itself and a variety of art pieces from Classic to Modern.
Loved it.
Not quite sure what I expected coming to the art museum when touring Harvard but the caliber of the galleries was overwhelming. Van Gogh, Degas, Matisse Rodin, and plenty more. Highly recommend.
The finished building now contains and beautifully displays the collections of the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and the Sackler. They are all first-rate. I spent half a day there without getting to the second floor.
One if the best kept secrets for Impressionists Paintings!!! I think they have more than the MFA. Just an incredible collection of art.
I was on the tour of the building it was very interesting about it details. Probably go back & to have more time to look at there art collection. Tickets for the art museum is $15 .
FREE for Cambridge residents, and there are great display pieces.
This museum is huge, plan to spend at least a day here !!
Van Gogh, Renoir, Georgia O'Keefe, this place has it all! And The Artifacts! I thought I was at the Met NY, such an amazing collection. It's Harvard, for God's sake, we expect no less.
Small but cool museum - has van Gogh's and Hokusai's works.
Worth a visit. Small but great collection of very fine pieces from many eras and cultures. A little bit of everything.
Beautiful art museum. Please visit and bring your kids!
Very very impressive gallery spaces. Especially after they rehabilitated it.
The restoration of the paintings in particular was outstanding.
Wonderful Art Museum. Has some famous works in it worth seeing. Lots of variety and a great place to spend the afternoon.
Excellent place to go with kids , so many things from Ancient , helpful staff , delicious coffee shop, amazing gift shop , if you go around the street you can find a parking lot, reasonable admission fee, everyone should see
Great museum with a mix of contemporary, modern and ancient works of art. Also free on Saturday morning for residents before 12pm.
A gem. Great collections some nice surprises. And location is terrific.
Nice calm museum
Great evening at the opening of the exhibition; the photography department has organize many fantastic seminar over the last few years.
I didn't make it past the lobby due to extremely high prices. Bummer
Great place to see some wonderful art by very well known artists outside of a major museum. One of my favorite places at Harvard!
Great place, they had live music in the atrium.
A world class museum in a great new Renzo Piano building! And the small Café has great coffee and delicious light plates.
The art is a grand collection of old and new peices.
Having seen Immersive Van Gogh, we had to see the real thing, and it did not disappoint.
Great collection of art for different interests. I've lived in Boston for 10 years. Wish I had visited sooner!
Manageable sized museum with impressively curated collections.
One of the best in town!
A must see while in Cambridge / Boston
The art is breathtaking
From Rembrandt to modern
Perfect size for an afternoon visit
Beautiful museum
Don't miss this one
Newly reopened building: it's beautiful and light and the collection is amazing, especially the modern exhibit. Definitely come here if you're in the area.
I'm an art person, so I may be biased, but they have a wonderful selection from many different countries and time periods. Definitely a place to stop by when visiting Harvard.
Fogg is the other half of art experience in Boston if one likes Impressionists, and it has a collection to match MFA from what I recall three decades or more later. Not to be missed for any art aficionado.
This is a fantastic museum, so much interesting art, from prehistoric pieces all the way through contemporary. I love the art and the atmosphere
Nice place to visit next
Impressive, loads of art to appreciate and green quirky coffee shop to grab a bite. Mosy memorable of my quick Boston visit.
There are wonderful exhibits, you can touch the meteors, and the bee exhibits are extremely well done.
We went on a Sunday when it was free!
Great for events, catered appetizers were so-so, I would eat somewhere else before going next time or have dinner later.
Rich, detailed history, great ambiance, healthy cafe and perfectly located! I would absolutely recommend going, but don't drive there.
Probably one if not the best fine art museum of Boston. An not so well known museum but has an amazing curated collection and is very well pleasant to visit.
A fantastic museum. Well worth a visit as the range of exhibits is breathtaking. Especially the artworks.
Ot worth paying $15 per adult to see the art works. The Washington DC museum of art is so much better.
Great place to visit when you're in the area. Stock to the art though, the cafe is a bit average.
Very nice
Very nice and relaxing place to visit. Diverse yet elegant... not to mention is affordable and won't break the budget.
Very diverse set of exhibits. I was especially drawn to the aboriginal art. Also just a very attractive building.
Amazing curatorial staff and really great food and staff at the café! The exhibitions are always challenging, enlightening, and consistently revolutionary!
Beautiful Museum.
So far so good
Free admission for student
I saw this exhibition on immigration
simple clean and quite.
Incredible amount of important work...Shame about the modern entrance with the scraggly lighting system and the in your face cafe...sets an odd tone...but one has to look past that update error.
Rich & varies collection - Calder, Picasso and a lot more
Wonderful collections. Superb renovation. Cambridge residents are free. Peaceful atrium for coffee.
A small but excellent encyclopedic art museum. Lots of famous paintings are located in it!
Gorgeous museum, especially after the renovations. Many address students(bu, Harvard, probably others get in for free!)
I gave it a 4 because I really like the architecture. The collection is a bit mixed and muddled for my tastes.
One of the best museums in Boston area and free for Mass residents from 10-12 on Saturdays.
Great collection, and not too big so that you can't see it all without rushing.
Amazing!!
Great collection of art, can wander the halls and see some really fancy stuff
Well worth the trip. Take a moment to notice the architectural modernization inside. Gorgeous.
Great facilities and nice selection of curated art from the Greeks, Middle Ages up to American colonial.
The collection is really complete to be a University museum. In the standard of the best art museum in the world.
Amazing place. From contemporary work to historical works and a nice cafe and gift shop all in one place
Many great pieces, layout is thoutful, very reasonably priced, beautiful space. Was thoroughly impressed.

Great place to wall through if you are in the Harvard area. Beautiful building.
A great architectural space holding a great deal of amazing artwork. A true delight.
All kinds of delights and hidden treasures tucked into various corners, all converging on a spectacular atrium/coffee bar.
This is a very nice museum. I would definitely recommend to come visit.
It’s nice place with lot of history behind each piece of art
Obviously well funded with generous patrons, hard to understand why such a wealthy university charges $15 entry fee

Excellent upgrade to the art museums at Harvard. Don't miss them if you are in Cambridge.

A free museum with a great collection. What's not to like?
Spectacular collection. We enjoyed this more than the MFA, in fact.
didn't go in bc it was closing time. But I would have gone in if I came early.
Renzo Piano’s architecture makes this a world-class museum.
Beautiful art from notable artists like Picasso and Van Gogh
A smaller but exquisite collection of art!
Hard to find entrance at first. Exhibit space is small and stuffy, but selection and curation is excellent.
