Reviews of Idaho Military History Museum
Absolutely loved this museum! Great place to visit for everyone! Packed full of artifacts from different periods of this countries wars! Especially cool that a lot of the artifacts are centered around Idaho and the men and women who served our nation who hailed from Idaho. Especially loved the tanks and planes they have for viewing. I highly recommend this place to everyone and is great if you're on a budget and want something to do cause it's completely free to check out, so get on down and check it out!
This museum exceed our expectations. The staff was friendly and helpful. The exhibits were more than what we expected. When first arriving we were wow'ed by the tanks on property from the classic Sherman to the huge gun on the Howitzer. There was an impressive displays from every branch of the military and history on almost every major US conflict. Lot's to learn here. Even had 3 vintage jets on site. We recommend this for the entire family.
There's a lot to see in this smallish museum that makes it worth a stop. There's a great outdoor display of planes and military vehicles and the inside has a lot of weaponry and uniforms. My kids loved it. Entry is also free and donations are encouraged.
Great collection of war time memorabilia. Lots of the items have been donated by local veterans and or families of local veterans. Highly recommend for school classes and or grandchildren.
My kids and I love this little gem. Lots of history and the gentleman that works there is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend supporting it.
Very nice, small museum with a variety of displays. Centered on Gowen Field history.
A nice small museum, have some interesting stuff.
This is a really cool collection of military uniforms, weapons, equipment, vehicles, and aircraft. The museum is free to visit and full of informative displays. Definitely worth the visit if you or your kids are into military weaponry and hardware.
Incredible place, such incredible history preserved here. The volunteers and curators are exceptional!
This is a little hidden gem in Boise. Wonderful displays( they have a GAU-8) very clean and a great selection of static displays outside….best of all it’s free….just wish they had an A-10
Great museum with many interesting artifacts from America's wars. Well worth a visit and a great place to visit near the airport.
Nice little detour to take if your out there by boise Airport
Went to visit for memorial weekend. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Easy flow, ton to see, very organized. Free admission, donations are welcomed. Their toys are awesome so buy something while you're there!! Had a great experience.
My kids love going here. Alot for the kids to view and touch. So much history crammed into one space. Everything is kept clean and set up nicely. We enjoy coming here every once in awhile. It's important for children to learn our history and to learn to appreciate and respect the sacrifices made for our country.
Very cool museum. Small but had plenty to look at. Friendly staff. The 3/7 (I think) Marine, Iraq vet working was a great dude.
Tons of cool stuff to see, lots of real equipment, tanks, planes and artifacts. What a great museum that i donated $5 buck for the experience!
This museum has the stories of many Idaho soldiers a log with artifacts from many wars. We had a wonderful time and the curator did a great job!
Nice to see the larger military armament. Good place to stop and visit for a couple of hours.
Cool place. Even has their own chicken for a gate guard 🤣 …
What a great place!!! Take your kids there!!! Great knowledge & information about our military!
Very Interesting!! Artifacts from WW1 through Vietnam, some samples from Both sides of the Conflicts. (Please leave a "Donation" - I would suggest $5 per person[ or more]. )
It's free.... we made a donation but very good ....lots of stuff to look at .... great collection
Neat little museum just out side of Boise Idaho.
Awesome collection inside and out!
Wish I got there sooner but seeing an Abrams that close is good for now, will be back one day!
Our first visit here today. What a great museum and very welcoming staff! Being there are already 226 great reviews, I will address accessibility. I use a mobility scooter. I could easily navigate the entire museum with only one or two tight turns. Otherwise, I could not be more pleased. Most placecards were at great heights so everyone could see them. The air conditioning was working great too. I did not use the bathrooms.
A rooster greated us at the door and that was fun!
Fun, free, and more to see than you would think at first.
This place was wonderful. My husband was a Tanker and I think he dreamed about this place last night. Thank you for making his day being able to see all that nice stuff. Very well put together. Thank you all for what you do.
Wow!!! This place is great! You don't need an I.D. card to get in since it's outside the gates of Gowen Field. It's chock full of Idaho military history, tanks, planes, medals, uniforms, stories and artifacts. Wrap all that goodness up with two amazingly knowledgeable guys, Misha and Eric, and you have a Can't Miss experience. We went through with an 8 and a 10 year old boy, and the guys were really great about answering their questions and explaining things in a kid friendly but not dumbed down manner that the boys loved. Add some cool souvenirs from the gift shop and they couldn't have been happier. Altogether a fantastic place to bring kids and military buffs of all ages!
I had 5 teenage kids that were interested in going to the museum. I planned for about an hour and it was just right for them. I let them wander and explore on their own.. The staff was awesome and took time to answer questions and show those interested some pretty cool history!
Small but full of history. Plenty of items from all wars that the United States has been a part of. The guide was very knowledgeable and nice. They even have a rooster named Private Malarkey that hangs out outside the entrance.
Very interesting, lots of historical items. Good place to spend a couple of days.
The staff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly on our visit. The items displayed were very interesting and covered a wide range of information. We enjoyed the resident rooster and stories of his exploits.
Great collection of militaria and most importantly honors Idaho's veterans. It was clean and well kept, and the museum staff were informative and a pleasure to be around. Definitely worth a visit!
A small but interesting museum. Happy that they have places like this still, hope they get to expand.
Not big, but very good collection both indoor/outdoor, from military weapons to soldiers’ everyday life throughout the history; very friendly staff.
I am not a fan of military staff and I still found it really interesting.
Preserving food and invent safe food containers from starvation. Amazing story
Enjoyed the knowledge these people shared with us
The Idaho military museum was awesome. It is small but has really great potential especially if people keep up the donations. They have display cases from different wars through out time and it was really cool being able to see and read about our history. Both in Idaho and around the world. If you have not been I would highly recommend it. Admission is also free so bring a couple a dollars to donate!
This is a free museum so take cash with you to donate. It was a great place to find out about Idahoans who have seved and they have a lot of historic items.
Exhibits from most of the wars with lots of info on service members and ships, planes and gear used. Super helpful staff and very well kept and clean facility. Friendly rooster, frog and bunnies also.
I personally love machinery and mechanical weaponry. There's something enjoyable about the power and steel of these machines. This is a great time if you like tanks/airplanes. Some little kids don't find it interesting so keep it mind this isn't for everyone.
I really enjoyed looking at the pictures and models of the naval ships. I also really liked being able to get up close and personal with a MIG29 and a F4 Phantom. So cool! Love to see my tax dollars put to good use :)
A small, but very enjoyable museum with free admission. They have a nice display of artifacts from all the armed services and also captured equipment inside, and quite the collection of tanks outside. In addition, they have a F-86, F-4, and MiG-21 on display. One side note is that the museum is at the airport and Air National Guard base and there were A-10s flying around during our visit. Getting in is a little weird. It looks like you are coming up to the gate of the base, but you turn left into the museum parking lot just before the gate.
Amazing museum to see some really cool tanks, planes, and other military things. I highly recommend people visit it and maybe leave a donation.
Some very interesting equipment here! Easily the prettiest is the F-86A Sabre, but all the aircraft are great. Artillery pieces are good, too. Tanks as far back as an M4-A3 Sherman, at least. Well worth the visit!
This is definitely worth the stop. I enjoy learning about the military history of our country and this museum does a good job explaining it. They tie in Idaho into the history which makes it more interesting. I can't believe all of the pieces they have in the collection. They cover the Civil War through the Iraq War. They have small (infantry items) to large (Tanks & Jet Fighters). This is a donation only museum. Please go enjoy and supply a donation.
A very well kept and organized museum with very friendly staff! Highly recommend to anyone interested in war and military memorabilia. It's free admission but leave a donation to keep it going!
Great museum with a lot of cool military equipment with a little explanation on the history of it.
Great collection of war memorabilia.
Great exhibits & staff
This place is cool. Took my kids to check it out. We really enjoyed looking at their collection. They have done a nice job with their displays. Deffinenlty worth going to check out. They have stuff to look inside and out. Very friendly staff.
Mighty fine museum; well worth a diversion from the highway. There are some exhibits I've never seen attempted. There are full cockpit fuselage sections from F-4 and F-16 fighters. Glass cases full of Air Force and Army items abound, down to the most common things you never see space for in museums. Leave an hour to see most of it.
Great little museum covering everything from the Civil War to the Gulf War. There's no charge for admission, but being a little cash for a donation.
Great live display in the parking lot of jets, tanks, cannons, Etc. Haven't been inside yet but will go back on another day. Staff was very helpful.
WWI and WWII displays! Tanks and airplanes and mortar shells...what more could you want? Admission is free, with donations encouraged. They also have a shop with well priced toys and history books.
The outdoor displays are super cool but could be improved if they opened them up during the day to see the inside. I didn't get the chance to go into the museum as it was closed, but the outside was fantastic.
We happened by this museum on our bike trip across the country. We were taking some back roads in Boise and saw the museum. It was Sunday, so it was closed, but there is a bunch of equipment displayed outside. Tanks, artillery, military construction equipment, cannons, jets, jeeps, etc. Mostly US, but there is a MIG as well. It was a great fine and even if you don't get in, enjoy the equipment outside, and it's free!!
It was pretty cool to see a lot of old things that people used and had a while back in time. There's stickers for free. Most of the things are inside but if you want to see planes and tanks those are outside
So much to see, explore and learn history.
This museum has extremely well maintained equipment and items, nice staff, and some really cool stuff to look at. Highly recommend a visit, and I'm quite a history nerd.
Lots of military, all braches. Some nice stories about the ships named after the area, such as USS Idaho or the USS Boise. Spent about an hour and a half checking it all out. It is a free entry museum, only donations.
A great open floor to wander through.
Many different displays having been donated by the Service Member or their family.
It was a real pleasure to walk through and I'm looking forward to going again.
Awesome place can't be better
A wonderful place to see Gowens past, plus many historical items from the past inside and out. They also have a great little gift shop, my kids had a blast!
I loved it. There is so much to see at your own pace. So much to learn and it is great for kids. Friendly knowledgeable staff too!!! Great place to spend a few hours learning.
Great military museum ,lots to see from World War 1 ,WW 2 displays to current military displays, would highly recommend
Highly recommend when you're in Boise Idaho to run over to the Idaho military history museum. They are very knowledgeable people in their artifacts are remarkable.
It's nice for a small museum. However don't go expecting a lot of exhibits and the gift shop is lackluster at best. But it's free admission and for free it's worth it.
Amazing history and fantastic museum from multiple Eras.
Allkinds of tanks and airplanes parked outside to look at. Great photo op. Museum is donation only. Great opportunity for all, including kids. Try on a helmet

Looks really nice and well maintained aswell as they care about the community going to schools with some of the machinery aswell as other places
Incredible collection inside and out; friendly & knowledgeable volunteers, spotless clean (including restrooms)but only open 12-4 Tue- Sat.
Great amount of military memorabilia inside and outside the museum. Knowledgeable staff with free entry.
Cool displays and a nice amount of vehicles to look at but don't expect to spend more than two hours here. Very small.
Interesting and educational display of military and wartime artifacts from the civil war through the Iran and Iraq wars. There is a large amount of information and didplays from world war II.
Amazing history about Idaho and it's military history. Would highly recommend locals to go. Out of staters will enjoy it as well.
