Reviews of Boise Art Museum
Mary Roberts
An exceptional small museum. Clearly their staff is thoughtfully and strategically displaying the collection along contemporary and meaningful themes. The mostly regional artworks are outstanding examples, the installation is superior - spaced and considered. Oddly for 2022, they forbid photos of any kind- even those taken with a Cell phone. Thus, casual sharing any useful visual is impossible. This policy could be revisited to increase publicity and visitation. So- imagine a really lovely small museum and go there!
Britta McNish
Great exhibit! The neon lights and paint by numbers is a fun one! The interactive candy exhibit is fun too! Thank you for offering a free day once a month! It really helps our family to experience fine art!
Nancy Champagne
Amazingly diverse collection of art, including many artists I've never heard of. There is a very moving and in depth grouping of the works of Stephen Towns, a very talented artist who depicts the history of slavery and African American people. I learned a lot, and was truly amazed at the depth and breadth of art.
Paul Hartl
Wonderful exhibit featuring Dutch-American artist Willem Volkersz's fascinating neon tubes and paint-by-numbers paintings. Many other interesting American artists' works. Lovely space, highly recommended!
Kosta Milojevic
Small but very nice art museum at the park near Boise River Greenbelt. Galleries are up to date with some new themes every time we go there.
Heath Family
Beautiful gallery, interesting and varied types of artwork....would recommend! The female impressionists paintings from the Smithsonian are lovely.

This art museum is absolutely worth it for the price - and you might even learn something! It’s a small museum, I spent maybe 45 minutes there. I loved their exhibit covering the Great Basin, especially the photographs. They have a large collection of Native American arts - all donated from a couple that collected it.
They do not allow backpacks, but they do have free lockers (maybe 12?) for you to use. If it’s busy, you may need to plan ahead. You have to reserve your tickets (online) at least two hours in advance due to covid. When I checked in, they had a sign that kept track of how many people were in the building. There were only a handful of other people while I was there.
They do have a hands-on kids art area, but it is currently empty due to covid.

Some of the work was compelling with a story to tell. I was a bit surprised to see nothing from about 60 centuries of art. I was also a bit surprised at photos not being allowed. Most museums in the world now have no problem with that. The galleries also seemed rather dark and I wonder why the skylights have been painted over.
Judith Hurlock
Collections were not my personal taste, but definitely worth seeing. Special exhibition was a very pleasant surprise. It featured a home town (Balto) artist, Stephen Towns, & his work is AMAZING! Nice museum store & shout out to the friendly & helpful security officers too.
Katy Strojny
I was a bit underwhelmed. For the price, it's easily still worth a visit, but I felt like there was limited variety in the artistic mediums on display. Also, there was an abundance of still life artwork and that has never been my favorite.
Todd Maguire
This small museum has an excellent collection of art. The sculpture garden is also particularly appealing. The Stephen Towns exhibit is awesome.
Cassie
Very cute museum and a good way to pass the time. The art is more modern so if you're not into that kinda thing you might not like it. There seems to be a lot of activities for younger children.
Bernadette Wesolowski
I haven't been in a ton of museums in my life but I've been in a few. I enjoy the BAM because they rotate exhibits along with permanent collections but within those permanent collections they do rotate new pieces in. Their newest and biggest exhibit by far is the The World Stage: Contemporary Art from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. I really really like this exhibit! There are some cool pieces and a vast variety of media. I think everyone would be able to enjoy this exhibit no matter who you are or whether you like art or not. There is something for everyone to enjoy! They have a special experience here just for kids as well. Admission is not expensive and if you want something fun and different to do in an afternoon then check out the Boise Art Museum!
Rickie Meeuwsen
Convenient downtown location right across the street from the library. I visited on a first Thursday of the month with free admission by donation special.
I was fascinated by the actual are from real types of people with odd art media
Sandra S
Really enjoyed this museum! No photography allowed, was a little disappointing. Entrance fee was very reasonable.
Elliott Hoopes
4 out of 5. The art is very fun to look at. However, some of it is a little bit boring, to be honest... The current installation by he Black artist is incredible (although I suppose that will become obsolete in the future, as it's a temporary instillation) and very informative. Pretty cool place to visit, overall. I wish, however, that there were more types of at than just paintings and sculptures and stuff.
Lisa Davis
A great 2 hour visit on a whim. Some great pieces of mixed media art and lots of other gems!
Ian Elliott
This place is a hidden gem of Boise. For all the great pieces here it was a crime how sparse the guests were, which to me made for a more perfect experience. If you even kind of like art. I can't recommend this place enough.
Tanner Paladino
A great stop in Boise! Wide range of art, and some really great pieces!
Issa Maalouf
Maybe I shouldn't go there because it us not my type of art! There are some beautiful sculptures and photos that are beautiful! Besides it is weird that you are not allowed to take photos. I have been to many art museums and it was allowed to take photos! It is recommended for contemporary art lovers. Very friendly staff!
Christian Dahlström
I love visiting once every few months to soak in the changing art.
I am a BAM member, so visits are free. It is worth support the local museum.
Sarah Gibson
Not very impressed with many of the exhibits. It also had Cuban art, some of which was promoting communism and others against it. The kids area was ok.
Deb Kubik
Beautiful building. Art was a bit depressing. Installation of candy on the floor was extremely weak art.
When I go into an art museum, I want to be inspire. I want to see beauty.
Tired of art politics.
Cameron Skaggs
Really great art museum in downtown Boise. Frequently updated exhibitions always keep the visit interesting and fresh! All rooms are well curated including information about the pieces and artists. Informative staff are always kind and willing to offer additional facts about the pieces! Would highly recommend!
Talmage Walters
Cool art but also why was half of it from Canada more local art plz 😁😁😁 …
Ashley Orehek-Rossi
I enjoyed wandering the galleries. I especially loved the mindfulness interactive exhibit currently on display. Very close to the downtown.
Susan H
Take your time and really look around, there is beautiful artwork here, and some has such a soulful meaning. We enjoyed ourselves very much. The artwork is changed often enough that you get to look at different items with a good frequency.
Kyle W
Lovely gallery at an surprisingly low price. There are a variety of artistic styles and cultural commentary that I didn’t expect to see represented. They don’t like you to take photos and will remind you of that if they catch you in the act, but oddly I never saw a sign prohibiting photography. Just keep this in mind if you plan on visiting.
Allison Reed
The Boise Art Museum (or BAM as they nicknamed it) has SO MANY exhibits, we almost needed to come back another day. The art was amazing, thought-provoking, & made me feel so much. They had pieces from Andy Warhol and the painter of Barack Obama’s portrait (his name is Kehinde Wiley if you’re wondering) if you needed to know how great this museum is. It’s definitely worth the trip. The only reason it is four stars instead of five is because it was a blazing hot day, the museum itself was still pretty hot, & I would have loved a bottle of water. However, the gift shop didn’t sell any, and the water fountains were closed for safety purposes. I do understand that it likely wouldn’t be safe for the art. However, if there was someway to make it safe for the art & allow people to have drinks, that would really make it a top notch museum. It took about three to four hours to get through. So it is MORE than worth the price of the ticket. I highly recommend it!
Conor Kennedy
This place stacks up to similar museums in other bigger cities. The variety of medium and topic is unbelievable, imho. So many surprises here, and this is coming from someone who doesnt know a heck of a lot about art. They should really, really revisit the no photography rule, because I would bump this place to people from back home and show them some of the reasons they should check this out for themselves.
Sally Mitchell
BAM is such a gem. I am always thrilled and impressed with the quality of art BAM's curators bring to Boise. I can thank BAM for introducing me to one of my now-favorite contemporary artists, Kehinde Wiley, at their 2013 exhibition of his work (you can see one of his works at the current show, The World Stage, along with works by Warhol, Basquiat, & many others). My kids love the museum as well because exhibits are engaging, but it's small enough to not overwhelm them (and they loved the now-defunct playroom when they were small). Additionally, I appreciate the fact that the entry fee is so reasonable--especially for students. It's clear that BAM wants kids to visit and to enjoy art. I absolutely love that!
Caitlin St. Pierre
Love how big this place is. Lots of things to see so definitely worth the money. They change the exhibits up enough where you can keep going back and not get bored.
Antonio Barata
Not a large museum, but with interesting rotating and permanent exhibits. Noce place to get your art fix while in Boise. We enjoyed the art, the cool, the quiet. Recommended.
Lacey Bennion
Visiting the museum was wonderful! It's wonderful to see appreciation of artists, both native and world-renowned, celebrated in such a beautiful museum. I especially love the children's exhibit; it's lots of fun to play with light, color, and shapes. Would definitely recommend to art lovers young and old!
Mina Hoskins
Awesome museum, I love the room setup, and they always have great local works in. The exhibit was exquisite, Stephanie Wilde has such an ornate style. I especially loved the Corporate Death and Plaque series. There's a special place in my heart for long compositions. Thanks so much for providing an amazing experience to the community, BAM!
Annie O
Lovely smaller art museum. I loved the Indigenous sculpture and pottery exhibit- the storyteller sculptures melted my heart. Staff was friendly and informative. The Picasso in there is also breathtaking.
Annie Venters
Great variety of exhibits. Could have spent more than the 1.5hrs that we did.
Diane Solinger
I was pleasantly surprised by both the permanent collection and in particular by the exhibition. Well done, Boise!
Dawn Burke
I always always love this place! I think the price of admission went down. My aunt and I were both in for 10 bucks total. Maybe because it was during the week. The shows are always great. Even if I don't like one, there is plenty more to look at. I can't walk or stand much so really appreciate the placement of benches and the opportunity to look at videos. And the gift shop! So much fun stuff to look at!
Sara Busick
It was my first time here, and I really enjoyed it. You can get through the whole thing in a out an hour, and we visited with some out-of-town guests. They also appreciated it!
Michelle Platts
Amazing staff! Beautiful location. Even bought a few items from the gift shop this time. So wonderful to experience this location before walking around the Art in the park outside that day.
Felisa Steadman
We liked the variety of styles, mediums, interpretations, and the brief explanations. My friend and I took our two 10 year olds for a Cub Scouting requirement. 60 minutes was perfect.
Taylor Grindell
This place has been around for as long as I can remember. I used to visit it a lot as a child during school trips. Now, it is sorta nostalgic. I ride my bike past here every morning on my way to work and it always brings a smile to my face.
Derek Davidson
BAM! It's just an exciting onomatopoeia and its the name of a museum. I had a private guided tour when I last went, and there was a girl that banged on the glass of the sex ornaments and my guide politely asked her to stop which was the most amazing thing ever because if I was the guide I would've picked the the kid up with a wedgie all the way out the door and into traffic. Also. The statues need more googly eyes.
Lollipop Swamp
Came here for my anniversary with my girlfriend. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We got a student discount for being in school. Our favorite exhibit was the donuts one near the garden. My girlfriend even got a donut necklace to remember our visit!
5/5
Kristina Fuller
Small, but sweet. I'm 7 months pregnant and loved the portable chairs hanging on the walls throughout the museum.
Matt Prien
What can I say about BAM that you don't already know. Well first Thursdays are awesome. Basically it's donation day. So if you have the day off it's a great way to spend a few hours. It's close to Julia Davis Park so you can make a day out of BAM and a picnic or even go to the zoo. We just park and explore. I love how the change exhibits often. My wife and I try to go every 3 months. You don't have to be a college dork to enjoy art but it doesn't matter at BAM. Everyone is welcome... It's one of the few places where the rich and poor mix.
Jeremy Wheeler
Good for what it is and i like that they integrate the Boise St faculty art work. Curator does a good job at exhibiting a variety of styles in a fairly small museum. Friendly staff as well.
Amy Storms
I especially enjoyed the high school art and the donut exhibit.
Jarl Carl
Clean, wide variety of art displays
Jon Murphy
I brought my niece and nephew to "Boise Art Museum" and they enjoyed their tour as much as I did. The price is just right for all the things that we saw, read and experienced.
Jerome Frazer
This is a very high quality museum. Every time I am in Boise I make a point to visit BAM. They have consistently outstanding special exhibits and a lovely permanent collection. The staff is very friendly and informative, and there are discounted rates for children, students and seniors. BAM is definitely an enrichment for the city of Boise.
Tabatha Pemberton
Well kept, interesting exhibits. Not usually our thing to do but it was a fun little experience out of our norm! They have a whole section guarded towards kids as well which I thought was neat.
Timothy Lillie
A nice little museum in a great location. Some construction, early 2018. Update: still small but that's ok. Young kids need attention but can come.
Carla Weller
It was more of an independent exhibit than an art museum. I have seen more art at galleries. I was disappointed. I am from Chicago and I guess I am used to more.
Leane
Lots of interesting pieces of art to look at and experience. It's not a big city huge art gallery, but it offers a wide variety in it's displays.
mj w
Great collection. I really enjoyed myself and there was staff everywhere to answer questions. I would have given it 5 stars, but they do have the worst bike rack in all of Ada County. Please BAM get a better rack . Thank you
Sariah The Snail
I went with two of my friends and saw all of the exhibits, including the current Impressionists one. I really enjoyed it and will be Googling certain artists to learn more about them!
Christie Carroll
A Boise institution that deserves a visit! Affectionately known as BAM, the museum nestled in Julia Davis Park is a great stop on a tour of Boise. Whether you're a local or a visitor, the art installations are always different and thought-provoking. I just checked out the Adonna Khare exhibit and was blown away by her talent. There have been several really wonderful shows that have made me wish I had visual artistic skill over the years. On the small side for a museum, but I prefer BAM over places you must devote hours upon hours exploring. It's just enough art to engage without making your eyes cross. Plus, they have a quaint museum shop with a lot of great local and national artsy findings!
Eagle Eye Chuck
They have a great variety of art from all over the place. Some of the art is of types I've never seen before which was a very great treat.
Marleine Tutor
We visited this museum on a recent trip out west. So impressive. I have to learn more about the contemporary artists whose work was on exhibition. It inspired me to learn out of my box.

Being in this gallery almost made me forget what a horriable state I'm in right now... Well for the wilderness, it's great art, keep up the good work, maybe art can break the bigot hold on that state

We enjoyed getting an impression of impressionism, exploring the dualities of perception on a cosmic scale, where the singularities of Oneness prevail.

Awesome small museum that takes about 45 minutes to stroll through, cost was $6. Some very creative works by living artists were included.

The Boise Art Museum is a wonderful and enriching experience for all to enjoy, that being said parents need to be absolutely aware that some pieces in the museum are off limits to be touched and small unbehaved children must be watched like a hawk, if you wish to let your children run around then please take them to the discovery center down the road.
Sam Finnell
Beautiful new exhibit is being shown! Definitely stop by if you can!
