Reviews of Howard Steamboat Museum
Kim Kornegay
My husband chose to visit this inspiring museum for his birthday. We were welcomed by Christian who was very helpful at giving us the 'run down' of how our visit would work. The adult charge for admission was $10/per person and very reasonable for a museum of this caliber. Parking is free, masks are required/requested while you tour. We sat for a short, ten minute introduction movie that gave a great overview of the Howard family and their steamboat business on the Ohio River. When the film was done, Christian asked if we had any questions and then our tour began with Jason. I should mention, you don't have to have a tour guide, there is a brochure that will help you on your own self-guided tour if you wish. But because the museum had no other visitors at the time, Jason spent over an hour with us on a tour of this stunning home. He was extremely knowledgeable about the home, the Victorian Era, the steamboats and the Howard family in an interesting, non putting-off way. After exploring the first two floors of the home with their mouth-dropping woodwork, creaking floors and fancy chandeliers, he invited us to tour the third floor on our own. If you are a homeschooling family with older children (maybe 8 and up), they would enjoy the history, the steamboat replicas, views of the Ohio River, toilets (!) and the grounds. Mrs. Howard was a very forward-thinking woman who knew what she wanted and Mr. Howard seemed glad to give it to her. Such beautiful preservation should be seen and enjoyed by all. Thank you Christian, Seth and Jason for the way your hearts for the Howards come through in the way you make guests feel so welcomed. This home is treasure trove of history and should not be missed. Average time to walk through 1 1/2-2 hours. Small gift shop.

This is the mansion the Steamboat company founder and family built and lived it. The entire home was constructed by the boat builders with intricately hand carved wood. The entire place was built without power tools. The museum gives you all the history of the steamboats but the architecture of the home was the highlight for me. It doesn’t take long, it’s affordable, and well worth it.

Awesome place to visit and not expensive at all. The ground floor is lead by a tour guide while the next floors are self guided. The staff is very knowledgeable, especially because I always end up asking obscure questions, which they knew the answers.
GW McCandless
We very much enjoyed our recent visit to the Howard Steamboat Museum. Several things had been added to the museum since our last visit.
There was an interesting video about the Howard family to see. Also, the museum has opened another floor of the house to visitors. The room where the children sometimes played was especially interesting, and the view from the tower room was very cool.
The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
I would definitely recommend visiting the museum again if you haven't been for a while. The new updates have added a lot.
Stephen Sullivan
I was amazed at how well the historic mansion and museum had been preserved, even in wake of the 1971 fire and ongoing restorations. It may be the habit of many young people to hold a grudge against history, but I think some things about the past were far better than today. People often had real class then.
Helen Benson
This is a must see. The first floor is beautifully restored and tells the story of the family. Upstairs tells about their steamboat manufacturing just across the road on the river. The exhibits did not detract from the enjoyment of the architecture and use of rooms.they were still in business in the 1940s and built landing craft and other small craft for our military.

Great, knowledgeable staff. Tons of family history (last living family member turned home into museum so EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL, not "period correct") as well as river boats built by the family as well as WWII ships. We learned a day late that if you tour the museum after a Belle of Louisville/Mary Miller (part of the Belle cruises) cruise and bring your ticket you get $ off ticket price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Michael Schroeder
This place is great! The workers are all friendly and knowledgeable, the house is beautiful and so well preserved and full of history, and the price was very reasonable. My family will most likely be coming back again some time soon; bringing along relatives that also like this sort of history.
Lauren
What made this so special was that most everything was original to the mansion! There is also more freedom in the tour than in other tours.
William Owens
One of the most beautiful interesting old houses I've ever been in. Not to mention the history of the steamboat. They have models of many up there steamboats they built and the history on each. This place mesmerised me! Great place!
Laura Licht
This is one of the best museums I have visited. The woodwork was exquisite.. Learned so many things. The tour guides were awesome and obviously loved this house and the history.
Amber
I was hoping to see a real steamboat. But this house is designed so beautifully and I loved it anyway. The house has so much history and it was so fascinating to learn about it.
Dan Mackenzie
Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. Incredible architecture. They did a great job capturing history.
Nate Renbarger
Great museum, helpful staff and a lot of interesting pieces. It's a beautiful house.
Jeff Keesling
A great little gem with a knowledgeable staff and some really cool stuff. I'd call it the Howard Steamboat/Fireplace Museum myself. Worth the time to check it out.
J Samm
Fantastic and Informative - the tour was wonderful, the architecture amazing and the price minimal. Definitely recommend
Nurzhan Kassym
Awesome museum. We all loved it. Great history.
Steve Moore
This is one of those places that you will drive past a hundred times and never think to stop. That was me, until today.
There are both self-guided and staff guided tours available, but since there were few people there, I took the guided tour and enjoyed the ability to ask questions and be more engaged in the experience.
Learning a little bit more about the Howard Shipyard and the influence of steamboats in the development of our nation was a fun way to spend part of the afternoon.
Jason was an extremely knowledgeable and professional tour guide.
After you learn about the history of steamboats and the Howard Museum, head across the river for a cruise on the Belle of Louisville.
Anne Boyd
The house is beautiful with so much to see. Filled with history and beautiful architecture. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. Really a wonderful museum. Highly recommend seeing this place if you are in the area!
Syndi Chesser
Fabulous time capsule of late 19th century history along the Ohio River with "host with the most" Travis Vasconcelos!
Kathleen Walker
Very interesting!! Learned a lot! Everyone should go there if near the area!
GK Ramstead
Most well-preserved turn-of-the-century mansion I have ever toured. Stunning craftsmanship!
Walter Koczot
A real look into the past at a residence which remains virtually unchanged from its hayday. The home's connection with the steamboat era is striking. The same techniques used to construct steamboats were used to build this residence. Our tour guide Kadie was extremely knowledgeable and able to provide us with an intimate understanding of the connection between the family, their steamboat business and their employees who built the boats. A hidden gem!
Joy Hitchcock
Lovely, interesting museum. Very nice venue for social events.
Valery Levitt
First off, the house is gorgeous and beautifully furnished. Dorothy, our tour guide, was so sweet and informative. She was so nice and she is from the area and knew the family who once lived in the house. This is definitely worth a visit. It's great for people who love old architecture and/ or steamboat history. It greatly exceeded our expectations!
kim ferguson
Used this place for a graduation party and it was absolutely perfect. Gorgeous venue.
Richard Grassmyer
The Carriage House is a great place for a gathering or special event..workers were attentive..nice overflow space outside for warm weather functions...parking was close by with a minimal walk..
Carlana Miller
Don't let the name fool you...this is home is a timepiece of its era, the Golden Age. It has been beautifully maintained and renovated as needed, with great attention to detail! About 90% of the interior furnishings belonged to the Howard family. Truly a step back in time...not to be missed!!
The model steamboats are also amazing in detail, shed light on the industry that literally built this home.
George Richter
very nice place to go and very interested and to learn about history
Gary D. Drechsel
Outstanding history Steamboat history! Beautiful facilities.
Cary Gayheart
It is a very small, very specific museum. The house it is in is absolutely beautiful and is a time capsule of sorts for the Howard family at the height of their wealth. The second floor is dedicated to boats and the river. It won't take long to go through, we did a self guided tour in a little over an hour.
Logan Rumbaugh
Neat little museum, very nice house with most of the original furnishings. All visits are guided, but $5 for students and kids and $7 for adults, and around a 1.5 hour tour it seems like a very reasonable charge. Better yet, it seems that most visitors go with a personal tour guide not in a group. This is a good way to spend a couple hours, and I would recommend at least doing it once just to check it out.
Heather Trem
Very cool place! Amazing how it was restored after a flood and fire, and most of the furniture is original. The guys are very knowledgeable and are happy to answer any questions you have!
Brad Bamforth
House is incredible. The history of the Howard's and the shipyard is a huge part of Jeffersonville's history and it's always nice to see where the story of where you were raised. The staff was knowledgeable and seemed genuinely happy to answer questions and assist guests.
Queen Scorpio (Sarah W)
Very awesome! Learned a lot about local history that I never knew!
Joseph Roberts
If you love well preserved history then this is for you. Very knowledgeable staff and a very well preserved piece of history from the late 1800's. I highly recommended a visit to this historic work of art. Discounts available for veterans, children and AAA members.
Jake Crib
It was closed when we stopped in, but the beauty of the buildings exterior is remarkable.
This is not a home, it's a magnificent work of art. Would love to have been able to see the inside.
Paul Bridge
Staff was friendly and informative. I am happy we stopped by. There is a lot of information about steamboats. Learned alot.
John Hardaway
The house is beautiful and interesting. The displays of steamboat history are amazing. But our guide for the tour was horrible. We should have taken the self-guided tour that was an option.
Ron Bristow
Very nice visit they are working hard to make it a better experience
Michael Haynes
Great place, lots of items and history about the area, and ship industry of the past to present. Only bad thing is I know alot about it's history and those time periods, and any questions I had for the tour guide, she responded like I was a 4 year old, and felt like she thought I was a moron. All she did during the whole tour is kept repeating the same 3 facts over and over. I think she didn't like that I knew more than her about the place, than she did, and she works there.
Keli Ulferts
It’s a two-for-one: Steamboat museum and historic home tour. 1. All you want to know, and then some, about the steamboat era; 2. Gorgeous Howard family mansion contains many original furnishings. Go! It’s terrific!
Dmitri Gordon
Learned a lot about the history of steamboats and the development of the United States. Guided tour was brief but informative, and no wait! Would recommend to a friend
Alisha Ferguson
We opted for a guided tour and are very glad we did. There’s a lot of history and memories in that house. We would have missed a lot had it not been for our guide. We learned about a lot of the old steamboats and how they were made.
Erich Miller
If you love old mansions, this one is a must see! Woodwork throughout house is absolutely fantastic. Artistic talent that would be hard to recreate. Historical content in house about steamboat industry worth the visit.
Joseph Day
This is a really cool museum. The house is very historic and the steamboat replicas are pretty amazing as well. It's a fair price and we had a good experience here.
Nicole D.
Had our wedding here in 2009, love this place, it has such a rich history and is beautiful as well. With all the upgrades to the carriage house, it's a one stop location for an event!

Good/quaint museum with very knowledgeable staff.
Shelley Kimmel
This landmark museum is a must see for anyone who happens to be visiting out little river town! There is plenty of information posted to give a rich, detailed story of how Jeffersonville was "Born" and how we became a hub and builder for and of barges. Visit during the Chataqua festival for a chance to buy goods from many of our local vendors! It's a beautiful museum, very worth stopping by and taking a tour!
Ed Carpenter
The Carriage House at the Howard Steamboat Museum is an awesome space for just about any event. Beautiful outdoor areas even in the winter and the beams and exposed wood look inside is beautiful.
Bradley Caffee

The Howard is a rare Victorian mansion that still houses many of the original furnishings. It Is a worthy house museum, not only a repository of steamboat memorabilia and technology.
