If you're at all interested by industrial history, Sloss Furnace is a great place to go. I recommend go to visitors center first, get the self-guided tour map and start walking. You'll understand better how the iron-making process works a bit better. Each stop on the tour has signs with more details. Small gift shop with crafted metal curios, T-shirts, books hats, and also bathrooms at the visitor center.

I love this place since I first visited about 15 years ago. Change happens but overall I like it even more now. It is safer, cleaner, and the self guided tour is to the point. Yes, I know a lot more anecdotes and explored a lot more places but this is a well presented industrial museum. Go, bring your camera and imagine the heat, noise, and toil.

My family was pleasantly surprised with this visit. The visitor's center was clean, bright, and full of helpful history. The young lady at the front desk was helpful and even recommended other things to do in the area. We did the self-guided tour, which was interesting and a lot of fun. I wouldn't take young kids here. My college-age sons found it fascinating.

What a fascinating find! My friend heard good things and booked a Friday morning tour for us. We were running late driving north and couldn’t cross the railroad tracks because a train was just chilling in front of us (apparently that happens a lot) so we called and were directed to go over a nearby bridge. Slight detour so budget a few extra minutes in case! Our tour guide Ty was really knowledgeable and engaging, with great energy. He answered all our questions and took us through the history of industry in Birmingham, and how Sloss cranked out pig iron in its heydays. Touched on environmental, social and racial issues as well, which gave a lot of depth to our tour. Afterwards we were free to explore the area, which apparently makes it one of 3 sites like this in the world to offer such an intimate experience (other 2 in Mexico and Germany). The facilities are well kept and the history well preserved. You can tell the staff really care about the work they do. The small exhibit in the building is worth checking out too if you wanted to see a video of the old machines in action. Walking around the grounds does something to you—the machines, the stories, the process. Makes you wonder who the people were behind the back-breaking labor and the profits. Leaves much to the imagination and provokes you to think. I highly recommend everyone get a chance to experience this tour if they’re in the city. You’ll learn something new you never expected to learn.

Awesome experience at one of Americas iron furnaces. I was really impressed with the amount of areas you can walk through and get to see so much of the grounds. Definitely a must go if you are in the area. Plan to spend at leave 1.5 hours here and when you are done stop in at Back Forty for drinks and food for excellent dusk views of the furnaces.

Great place to visit and bring a family, not very ADA friendly, but parts can be seen by wheelchair. Wear good closed toe shoes, boots are preferred. If visiting after a rain, parts could be closed for flooding. Stay to the path at all times. The museum is a must see.

I grew up in central Alabama, so I’d certainly heard of Sloss Furnaces but I had only recently visited. I took three of my children (12, 15, 17) and we all loved it! Plenty to explore, great photo opportunities, and lots to read and learn.

Definitely on the creepy side. I would not bring small children, combo of getting bored plus too much chance of something happening if they take off (steep and slippery stairs, ladders that shouldn't be climbed, etc). Very cool metal arts area. Engineers will nerd out. If you like the creepy vibe, add to it by first looking up some podcasts and/or ghost hunter type videos about the area.

This place is like urban exploration without trespassing. If you like old industrial stuff, you'll love this place. Parking was free. You can go inside any of the unlocked buildings, but they smell strong of old dust. This may bother those with allergies.

Really interesting stop with a free self guided tour through the ironworks. Lots of info along the way on the process and people in the plant. There's a few exhibits and an intro film in the visitor center as well.

There’s really nothing to compare this place to… it’s just incredible, haunting, beautiful, and so very different than anywhere else. You absolutely need to visit it and take your time really exploring it

You gotta visit this place if you're in Birmingham. An old furnace - very rustic and industrial looking. Entry is free, you have to check-in and you get a small brochure to guide you through the place. It starts off with a small exhibit with knick-knacks, then goes through the main parts of the furnace. There's little tidbits of history all over the place. It is also very picturesque. Would definitely recommend to visit it!

This is a very good primary metals historical site. To me, it's absolutely amazing to see the technology that was in use in the late 1800's. The process of making iron is fascinating and the scale of the manufacturing facility is stunning.

If you like big industrial stuff, then you'll dig it here. Tons to see, and a nice little walking tour with a handy map they give out at the front visitor's center. They also let local blacksmiths use the site for creative purposes, so on a good day there are sparks flying around, stuff being hammered, the smell of woodsmoke, etc. If you have kids, keep them close, because there are a LOT of places that should be covered up, but aren't. Watch your step!

This is an absolute epic place for music and other events. It has a deep history rooted in Birmingham and it shows, but how they have figured how to make it into something so special is really where the magic is at. Can't wait to go back to Furnace Fest again.

Cool place with interesting history. We have been to the summer beer festival here multiple times and always enjoyed the shaded areas and the water display out in the grassy area. There is signage around the property explaining the history and some of the structures. Parking can be tricky during events, bring cash.

Went on a self guided tour and it was amazing. Walking around and seeing all the old industrial machinery was fascinating. You much watch where you go and your footing and understand that this place is an old furnace and the support have rusted through in some spots. Amazing for photography, so many amazing spots in here.

Such a cool landmark. I knew I would enjoy it and our guide Ty made it a fantastic experience. The furnaces have a looming presence and you can really imagine the back-breaking work that took place when the workers did twelve hour shifts, seven days a week. I plan to go back and learn a lot more about this place.

Just attended Furnace Fest for the first time this weekend (flying in from Chicago) and was so amazed at the Sloss Furnaces grounds! What a perfect place, the sheer scale was incredible. A group of us were talking about how cool it is that the fest is here as we would have never learned about Sloss or even consider visiting Birmingham were it not for this fest - and now have the genuine curiosity and desire to explore more and come again. As for the grounds themselves, I love the mix of natural with industrial and enjoyed reading the history.

This is really a cool place to go look around, even when they are not technically open. People have heard the word “Ironworks”. Until you’ve seen one up close, you will never truly u sweat and that word. It’s a breathtakingly beautiful landscape of metal and machinery that makes you feel small.

Only online appointment is available at the moment due to the pandemic. Vital history of industrialization is so real and monumental right in the eyes of the visitors. It is certainly a good location to study the importance of Birmingham's industrial revolution.

It's a great place to explore and go back in history. There's a self guided tour of the notable buildings, and many others are open to explore. Many of the places look just as they did when the plant opened, making for a great place to visit history.

This place is amazing. What a cool view into such an interesting industry that is historic for many reasons to the U.S. and Birmingham especially. I left no stone unturned on my visit and could have spent many hours there. The frequent passing of trains really ups the ambiance, and is a place I won't hesitate to visit again should I be back in Birmingham.

This place is so cool. Bored one day, I decided to ride down and check the place out yet. It was fairly quiet, so I poked around on the bicycle throughout the whole thing. I'm sure it would be inappropriate if it were busy, but I road all over the park and would hop off to explore the books and crannies of the place. It was a good history lesson and offers fun exploring opportunities. It's a photographers dream land.

If it is it is by the hopes and dreams of the men and women that worked here. This place is hard cold steel and old rusty machinery. This place built stuff. Blood was spilled here. Owners became rich here. Men died here. Remember that as you are buying your hotdog after the tour.

Great example of industrial american history! There are not many if any opportunities like this to walk through a raw industrial site and places like this were the foundation of the industrial United States. If your in the area then stop by. It's free (donations welcome) and you can walk through in 30 to 45 minutes. I wouldn't bring little little ones but 12+ seems ok. Its not dangerous but theres a lot of metal and unsupervised children could get hurt. It's a self guided tour and there are plaques with info on the iron process and there is a small museum with more detail on Sloss.

I wasn't sure what to expect here, especially since we only had time for the self-guided tour. I'm pleased to say we enjoyed our time here and am so glad we got to visit. There is a lot you can't climb, but there's still plenty to see. Fun place for adults, kids, and photographers! Make sure you take cash for the gift shop!

They have done a great job keeping up with the facility. It’s really amazing to walk around and see the development of industry and have an appreciation for the hard labor that was once done. They have a great informative brochure they give out that helps guide and inform you through the facility. There are stairs to see certain pets but you don’t have to go there- besides them it’s a nice flat walking path. Definitely a must see if you’re into history and how things work.

Nice place that was saved from demolition and made into a great place for learning about the history of the in industry that made Birmingham what it is now.... the visitor center has a short video that informs you about the history of the place and how it has been transformed through the years,,, is a self guided tour or you can have a guide but it will show the immensity of the place and one only can imagine how dangerous it was to work there, the machinery and the furnaces are colossal and according to the posted signs it was a 24hr operation, you can wander around admiring closely all the machinery, from fans to steam turbines, conveyors, electric generators, power distribution panels etc, etc. They say is haunted, but in the dark corridors I crossed path with an older lady that offered to take my picture for me, it was an odd place to find a frail lady..... Enjoy your visit and learning experience

GO SEE SLOSS FURNACES!!! We weren't expecting this stop to be one of our family's most favorite stops on our road trip. My husband and I are history buffs and we thought this would be a good "kill an hour" stop on our way back home from our road trip. After 2 hours, we had to almost drag our children (ages 9 and 7) away due to the late hour. It's hard to imagine how an abandoned furnace could be so interesting but I will endeavor to communicate how it captured our attention. For those who like history or learning about the background of something, this place definitely is a vast well of information. We enjoyed learning about the role Birmingham played in the iron industry nationally and even internationally. We also enjoyed learning about how iron was produced. For those who enjoy getting to experience history in a hands-on manner, this place also checks that off the list. This vast property is almost entirely open for exploration. There are sections of the factory that are gated off for safety reasons (usually at a certain point on some stairs when it gets high off the ground), but my curious children never once complained or felt constricted by availability to explore. They (and my husband and I too!) loved getting to touch, climb, and walk around a place with such incredible history. We loved how they have not tried to shine this place up or restore it to "its glory days." Rather, they have worked to keep it safe but present it in its abandoned state. It gave it a very cool, unique vibe. We loved going in the old engine room with the original panels and levers still there and getting to even push the levers up and down. For those who want to just check out a cool, artsy environment, there are plenty of wonderful photos just waiting to happen as you can see. To this day, my children still tell others about the cool furnaces they got to go see. It is a wonderful learning experience that allows a lot of hands-on opportunities which is great for the kids. Also, it's totally free. No charge. Just a donation if you want. :)

If you have the chance to check out this national historic landmark, I can't recommend this treasure enough. You can almost feel the energy of all those workers from decades ago still on site. If you're a photographer, there are so many shapes and patinas for you to shoot, it's almost overwhelming. The folks at the front counter inside were so friendly and helpful and the lady in the gift shop is a true gem and made us love Sloss even more. You can do a self-guided tour, they have metal artists working on site that you can watch create, there are an abundance of classes for kids or adults & an art gallery where you can purchase metal artworks. Wear comfy shoes. The place is frickin cool!

We were disappointed in Sloss. The video is nice to show people and walking around is cool but we felt there was SO much more that could have been done with the space. Walkways didn't really get you everywhere and there weren't a ton of good, updated signs that's told you what you were looking at. Building some nice, elevated walkways so you can see more, and adding some fun interactive options would be a great way to engage people more.

Really fun place to check out! It was interesting to learn the significance Sloss Furnaces played in the history of the city. You can spend hours wandering around the area. I didn't know much about it, but it was a gorgeous day for pictures, and it's free so why not. What a massive structure. We didn't take the tour, but we watched the movie and walked all over. It was very interesting and could be educational for the kiddies, but keep an eye on them because there are something things the little ones could get into.

If you're an architectural, engineering, metallurgical or railroad nerd, plan for at least 2 hours here. It is a self guided tour with plaques along the way (and a brief program guide). However there are tons of things to see and figure out!!

Very educational and immersive experience walking through all the nooks and crannies of the factory and reading the detailed plaques along the way. Reminds us of how this country was built and who built it. When in Birmingham, this is a MUST visit. Also, it's free!

The Educator workshop was mind-blowing and emotional at the same time. The history of the company and its role during and after Reconstruction touched on the hard history of the conditions for blacks in the South. Touring the relics of the furnaces and imagining the conditions for workers during the Industrial Revolution was heartbreaking. Appreciate that much of the truth is not being sugarcoated or glossed over too much for the experience to be effective. So many ways my instruction of the Turn of the Century will be enhanced. Truly an experience I will NEVER forget and will always think about.

Went to the World Games Breaking Finals in the casting shed at Sloss and it was not set up very well; sight-lines were non-existent for more than half of the room (because TWG built a giant camera stand that cut the room off and blocked almost all views). I've been to many events at Sloss and the space is not known for great acoustics or sightlines (or air conditioning) ... that's fine and it's part of the charm ... but this was worse than normal on all fronts. Not sure if blame falls on Sloss or TWG--this was early on in TWG's week and I'm sure it was a learning process for everyone.

This sounds like a sleeper but it's an outstanding site to visit. Come on a blue sky day and in the later afternoon sun (careful, they close at 4!), and the site lights up in hues of orange snd rust. It's a photographer's dream and an engineer's heaven! Come in good weather as most is outside.

Very cool place. If you're into history, or industrial manufacturing its definitely worth a day trip to see. Birmingham is a cool city and you can easily make a day of it, or one of a few stops on a weekend getaway. Especially if you're into photography. You can spend anywhere from 90min - five hours learning and taking pictures. If you're local and have no interest in history or manufacturing its still a very cool place to walk for 30 minutes to an hour, and its free.

I've lived in the Birmingham area most of my life- So, I know a lot of the history behind its foundation- A visit to Sloss Furnace was a great way for my 11 year old to learn Birmingham's role in the steel industry- It is a very interesting site with a lot of great history, and out tour guide was excellent with children-

A surprisingly well put together tour path through the large, quiet former iron refinery. Really cool to see the whole processing system with informative tour stops. There is a guided tour available but we were able to self-guide without any issues. Also looks like a great place for school tours with a variety of hands-on experiences available. Highly recommend!

I went for the art show on Saturday Apr. 23 2022. It was very nice except the weather is brutal. It is warm and hot.. But there were pretty crowd on that day. Admission is pretty expensive as well as art pieces. But we took one piece which we can afford back home.

Sloss furnace hosted several great events for the World Games 2022. Break Dancing was held inside the cavernous industrial production building of the old Sloss Furnaces. The floors are sloped and provide a stadium-like tier for spectators. The surrounding grounds are very inviting with big shady trees and old construction equipment on display. Food Trucks were on hand for TWG events with several great choices.

My wife & I are haunted house junkies. So far this season we have been to 10 haunted houses. 4 in the Atlanta area and 6 in Alabama. These include: Netherworld, Nightmare's Gate, Paranoia, Folklore, Atrox Factory, Hellbilly Hollow, Hollis Haunted Chicken House, Insanitarium, Nightmare 3008, & here. This is my review on Sloss Furnace. . Sloss Furnace “Understaffed & similar to previous years” (6.5 out of 10) (Wednesday night) Total time on site: 64 minutes…Total time in Haunts: Trail- 11 minutes, Main Haunt- 19 minutes, The Thing- 5 minutes . We have gone to Sloss Furnace almost every season for the past several years and every year we go I feel the same way about the place….its big, it’s cool, it's over rated, it’s too similar to the prior year and understaffed. We arrived at Sloss Furnace around 9:50 pm on Wednesday night October 25th. We paid for 2 extreme scream tickets and tickets for “The Thing”. So in total, we spend $78 for tickets at Sloss. . We started with the haunted trail which is pretty similar to how it is every year. The monsters were spread out decently, but there could have been more. We entered a pallet wood maze, but there were no monsters in the maze, just a singing cowboy on top of the structure who made us moo like cows as he sung old McDonald so that he would guide us through the maze. We played along and it was mildly amusing and we found our way out of the maze within a few minutes once he started guiding the group. When we exited the maze we were in a large open area that had three zombies chase us. We then continued to the big slide that they have every year and then continued through the “fun house” area which is also the same every year. . Next, we went to the main haunt and it was pretty similar to how it has been in previous years. The only exception being that we were prime targets for the monsters with our glowing necklaces. As soon as we walked in a monster grabbed us and took us to a bathtub and smeared dirty water on our faces. As we continued we noticed that the monsters were spread out more than what would be considered ideal. We were touched several times and swarmed by multiple monsters a few times. We got to a big open room that was setup specifically for the “extreme scream” people. They put me in “Stocks” which forced me to let go of the wife’s hand and there was a guy waiting around the corner for that to happen so he could grab my wife. He put her in a chair, put a chain around her neck, and then chained her arms to the chair. As that was happening the guy that put me in the stocks took me over to a tilted table and told me to get up on it (he couldn’t lift me onto it). Then he and another monster worked together to chain my arms down and then they got on top of me, forced my mouth open, and acted like they were going to vomit in my mouth. My wife was able to quickly get out of her chains while both monsters were preoccupied with me. She was then able to enjoy watching them “torture” me. We then continued through the haunt with minimal touching from monsters after that point. We then entered their 3D section of the haunt which was the same as it always is. There was not a single monster in the 3D section (until the very end)….the closest thing to a monster was a fake sword sitting in a corner. At the very end, as we exited a woman grabbed my wife and pulled her out of the haunt. . Overall our experience at Sloss had me feeling underwhelmed & disappointed. I think that feeling is a mix between several things: It’s our 10th haunted attraction this year with so many good ones to compare to; it was during the week and they were understaffed as usual; it was so similar to previous years, we weren’t touched/harassed as much as we felt was deserved for the extra price, and the total price we paid was too much for the experience we received. It’s good enough to go to, but with so many other good options in the Birmingham area, I can’t recommend it over most of the other haunts.

Incredible historic place to visit. A living history of the steel industry in Birmingham Alabama. A replicate of a steel mill as it existed until it's closure in the late 1960's. We visited as part of an art show. We watched a demonstration blast furnish create molten steel and watched it pour into a cast. Very educational for a family and children. A must visit if you are in Birmingham.

Take some time here, it's well worth 2 or 3 hours. My wife and I did the self-guided tour using the written guide pamphlet that leads you from place to place. We left with a thorough understanding of this amazing facility. We're glad people fought to save this piece of history.

The overall concept of industrialism has very few monuments. The Sloss Furnace is one of the few historical monuments left that can be visited. I really enjoyed this free attraction. While I personally would give the monument 5 stars, I think some of the stops on the tour may have been a little too technical.

Due to covid, it's a self guided tour by appointment only. We were there on a weekday so that wasn't an issue. Friendly, helpful staff and we'll maintained. I'm from out of state and never knew there was iron production in Alabama. There wouldn't be a Birmingham except for the rich deposits of iron ore, coal and limestone in the area. This is a great preservation of time and technique long gone.

The is a great park - the majority of the exhibits are outside so be aware of the weather, but you get to tour a full size steel production factory from 100 years ago! Even for those less interested industrially, it's awe-inspiring to see the size and learn about the people who made the place operate.

I visit is the unique site while I was in Birmingham. Unfortunately I got there when they were about to close I had 30 minutes to go through the site. There's a lot of history here I recommend watching the movie before you walk through the place. I hear they also do haunted tours during Halloween season. Next time I come back, I will have to bring my camera and ensure that I get there so I have a lot of time to go through the property. It was interesting seeing all of the things there and stuff that was made.

What a great place for a family-friendly day trip! The free historical self-guided tour of the furnace was super interesting and I really enjoyed getting to explore the place on my own. Just a word of advice, though. Make sure you visit no less than a few days after a heavy rain as certain areas are closed at times due to flooding.

My school used the meeting area for a professional development day for us as a change of scenery from where we normally meet. Sloss is usually closed on Mondays, but they graciously welcomed us with open arms at this event. The rich history that Sloss offers is 2nd to none and the curator did an excellent job speaking about it during her introduction. I can tell she is very passionate about preserving its legacy. The grounds were very serene, despite the trains that were close by in the area. I liked the small waterfall area. I would love to go back to embark on the tour that was offered but due to time constraints we were not able to partake in. Thank you Sloss for being such hospitable hosts and for providing such a unique backdrop for our workshop.

A really interesting historical place to visit. Most of it is not wheelchair accessible. But it is free and really puts it's historical presence in perspective. Well worth doing if you're in the area. There's a free movie which lasts about 15 minutes available when you first get there. Is that a self-guided tour off of a map, which is a bit confusing oh, and the direction you should travel for the tour is quite unclear. If you don't mind kind of roaming around and figuring out where you are, the things that you see are quite interesting.

I wish more sections were accessible but there’s still a lot to see and learn. It's free! When you get there, you can get a brochure that walks you through a self-guided tour. Some areas were roped off even though the brochure told you to go into them, which wasn't ideal, but overall, this was a unique, interesting, and free experience. One of my favorite things I did in Birmingham. Great spot for pictures. Also, there were plenty of people around on a Saturday, so it wasn't excessively creepy.

This is an amazing self guided stop in time. The facility is massive, awesome, I believe parts are wheelchair accessible, others are not. Such a cool place! Visited for the first time during the 2018 Sloss Music Festival. The grounds are beautiful and there is still a functioning metalsmithing workshop. I was fortunate enough to get night access, when the whole place just transforms into something entirely different.

Sign in at the visitors center first, then skip the movie (full of feelings and not a lot of facts) and read the details on the place between the bathrooms to the left of the sign in desk . Then walk about the place. You can easily spend an hour if you take the time to really look at everything. Recommend good walking around shoes (no high heels ladies!) as there is a lot of ground gravel and grates to cover. BTW this is free!

I seriously never would have considered visiting the Sloss Furnace but will now take all our visitors there. It is a perfectly preserved industrial furnace facility that allows you to walk around almost all the sections. Photographers will love the lighting and striking industrial sight lines. The welcome center is informative and well laid out. If you have time, visit the sculpture school located on the property and take a lesson in iron forging.

The old furnace and buildings are pretty neat, signage could be better explaining the history of the sight. If you’re planning on seeing the sights, plan to spend no more than 1 1/2 hours. However, it’s a great place to picnic, bring a hammock, and generally enjoy the day.

We spent over an hour walking through the rusting boilers and furnaces of Sloss. It was making pig iron only 40 years ago and now it is a great place to see how the Industrial Revolution really was. Hard work. Tough conditions. Great products. There's a video and gift shop in the visitors center. For sale are iron curiosities made by artisans who make form into something cool. We saw iron peanuts for sale that look and feel like the real thing. Visitor center closes by 4 on most days so plan ahead. Note: there are active train tracks on the road leading to the entry gate. Sometimes, the freight trains take a long time so know how to reverse course and go a different way if you feel stuck at the railroad crossing.

My dad and I did the self-guided tour and had a really nice time learning about some of the historic aspects of the early American steel industry. The trip is quick and shouldn't take more than an hour and a half at most. I highly recommend it.

SO MUCH FUN! We were here during Halloween for the "Fright Furnace," and we really enjoyed it this time. The wait was long (about 1½ hrs), but we didn't mind it. The outdoor spook trail was lots of fun as well. If you're looking for a scary thing to do during Halloween, def go here. They put a lot of time into it. Sloss is also a cool destination to go to as a museum or for education. It's really neat to see how the furnaces operated during their time. ✔️

The Sloss Furnaces is another Birmingham landmark that is historic, easy to find and, best of all, it's free! All you need to do is sign in once you get there and you're free to go on a self-guided tour that lets you get remarkably close to all the machinery that powered this massive complex. There's also a video in the theater, restaurant gift shop on site. Parking can be touch but not off putting. The site is so massive you can spend a whole afternoon exploring. It's a must-visit spot in Birmingham.

Went to Sloss fest for the second year. Had such an awesome time. Not only for the music but Sloss has such a rich history and you see it all around you there. They do this amazing iron pouring "show" and tell you all about how it's done and what everything is. Planning a trip there with the kids on a regular weekday. Can't wait.

This has been a family favorite for some years now and it's definitely worth the spook if you're up for it. Come in a festive mood as there's a lot going on, especially on the weekends and I'd recommend getting tickets in advance as ticket lines can be long as well as the line to get into the attraction. They have a pretty good food truck selling the usual carnival foods such as nachos, sausages, pizza, hot dogs, cotton candy, caramel apples and the like. With small children I'd definitely recommend going earlier in the evening, like right around dusk.

A few years ago we were in town for a Keith Urban concert, and having time to kill before the event we decided to visit this park. As we explored the ruins we ran across what looked like props for a haunted house. Our immediate thought was "this place is super creepy during the day just on its' own, I bet it would be an incredible haunted house!" We would not be disappointed. We came back in October and began what has been a three year tradition (so far). All the people we have brought with us agree, "best haunted house ever". Although I do wish they would bring the Tesla Coil they had going the first two years. We will be back every year.

This was just an incredible opportunity to see and feel the might of the South. The magic behind "The Magic City" starts here. When you see the machinery, the boilers, the electrical turbines, and the grounds you are transported to the might of American ingenuity. This is a 100% self service tour. You are given a map of the location with descriptions of the layout and history behind it. TIP: See the movie in the welcome center BEFORE walking around the place. Takes 15 minutes, but worth the history presented.

Really, just quite amazing! You can feel the past as you walk under the massive towers, then down in the tunnels where the workers would stand and dump bins of coal all day. Down to the intricate detail of tiny piping intertwined through every inch of this historical site.

Now i like old mechanical stuff and this place is a goldmine. It is a self guided tour and not well marked , but kinda fun trying to figure out what everything is. The cool factor comes from the fact that it's located in a haunted factory that was in an episode of ghost adventures. I was passing through for the night on my way back to SC. I thought that it would be cool to check out, but unfortunately the best thing about it was the furnace itself. The haunted trails themselves were disappointingly cheesy. The line for the furnace trail absolutely sucked, as there was no air movement and they have these tents along the way that you stand in that almost overheat or suffocate you.

This is a great place to visit even if you are just passing through Birmingham. This is not your typical museum setting where you cant touch anything and have to look through glass or railings to see. There is a self guided tour through the entire steel plant and it is as if you are visiting by yourself and have the whole place to yourself. You can go up stairwells and explore this abandoned facility. Birmingham has really done will with this.

It is convenient to downtown Birmingham and displays a great deal of the machinery in the iron smelting process. It offers an excellent education on how the area progressed after the Civil War

TripAdvisor informed us about Sloss Furnaces, and we’re glad we went. We enjoy factory tours, and this is a self-guided one, of an abandoned pig iron factory. Although no longer a working factory, and looking quite derelict, it’s really interesting to visit, as they have done a great job to safely guide you around, explaining how the plant worked for over 90 years. Only thing that could improve the experience would be a tour guide to answer questions, or some animations to show how things worked.

The place is really haunted. My wife and I have been going to Sloss Furnaces for our anniversary during the Halloween attraction for the past 5 years. A couple of years ago, my wife saw a man in the tunnel behind us, but she said he was there one second and gone the next. Last October we went to Sloss, and when we decided to go home our battery was dead on our car. That was the only time our car has ever failed to crank. Creepy place, but lots of fun.

We were at the annual Gumbo Cool Off to benefit Episcopal Place. It was a really fun event with lots of great gumbo. Out team from Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Vestavia won the first place Spirit Award as well as the judges choice award for best specialty gumbo.It was smoked turkey and sausage gumbo and it was awesome. We also had lots of bread pudding with a bourbon caramel sauce. Sloss Furnace is the perfect size for this event and their security did a great job with traffic before and after loading up.

The one and only reason I do not give this five stars is when we went it was ten minutes before it opened and I walked in the lobby to sign in (not realizing it wasn't open yet) to see a woman who said "we aren't actually open yet". So I asked if I could proactively sign myself and guests in on the sheet since it was right there in front of me, and she said "sure". After that I went right outside the lobby where a small pond was (right in front of the entry to the park). We were there for a matter of seconds before a young security employee came to us and said "didn't she tell you we aren't open yet?". I replied "yes". He said "so you think you can do whatever you want?". We were all taken back by the tone of voice and demeaning approach he took so simply ask us to wait in our cars or the parking lot for a couple minutes before the park officially opened. We had a little chat with him and as it turns out it was fine for us to wait outside the lobby for the park to open- his concern was that we would enter the park while a cleanup/maintenance crew was still working. We completely understood this as it was a safety issue. What we didn't appreciate was the way he initiated his interaction with such aggression and disrespect. Extremely unprofessional when he could have simply said "please do not enter the park before 10:00 so that the crew can finish up their duties without worrying about civilians. The park is beautiful and well taken care of though. Highly recommended and worth a trip. Sloss managers- might want to have a chat with security personnel about being tactful and polite to customers.

If you like haunted places, go here. This place is for sure very haunted. The second you walk in you can feel how haunted it is. A couple friends and i walked around in there and we had one of those ghost things where it tells you what the ghost was saying. We didn't really think it would work. It was a joke. We started asking questions because it kept saying random stuff about fire and glass and stuff and it didn't respond so we started naming the people on our tour guide and we went through about ten and said "Clyde love" and it goes "love. Love. Love" so we flipped out and turned it off because we were scared. We were taking picture and all of us were pretty shaken alread and we saw this dude standing beside one of the furnaces and their little 5 year old sister started crying and so we were all very freaked out and trying to act like we weren't. Both of our moms decided we should go into this tunnel and all of us did not want to because we decided this place was haunted and a dark tunnel was the very last place we wanted to go. Well they started walking in and we were little and thought that it would safer to stick together and when we walked in, one of the little girls started screaming and we turned around and in this tunnel and the same dude in jeans and a white shirt with ash and stuff on his face turns around and we were all 12 and crying and trying to get out but our moms thought we were crazy so we finally ran out and when we were in the gift shop my mom decided she saw and ghost and went to the car. My friend lilly, my sister Gracie, and i followed her out and she was running so we started running and she locked herself in the car and we looked in the reflection and this different dude with a brown hat and polo and darker brown overalls was standing there and she had locked the doors so we were freaking out and the rest of the people ran out and they started talking about how they saw this dude walking down the stairs. Ask anyone who's been there. It's haunted.

Cool piece of local history. My daughter dubbed it "The Mechanical Gardens" because it sounds like "botanical gardens" and because "all the tubes and stuff keep growing up out of the ground like plants." I've taken a forging class here, I know they do blacksmithing, and I've been to several different events onsite. It's cool that the Rotary Trail and Jones Valley Trail can get you to Sloss from downtown too (by foot/bike/etc.), not to mention that Back Forty Brewing is right next door now too. Check it out.

When my wife and I visited Sloss Furnace in April, we liked the museum and explanations of the iron making process on the grounds but we were put off by an artistic presentation about abuse of women internationally. The exhibit just didn't fit in with the surroundings. It was a cause looking for attention but it could have found better outlet than an old iron furnace!

Sloss Furnaces is a very unique place and you can feel the history as you wander around under its rusty pipes. Former mayor Larry Langford called it an eyesore and wanted it torn down. Well, he's in jail now and the buildings are still there... It is usually very quiet and a little spooky, especially inside the blower hall. It used to be that you could climb on top of the machines and even to the very top of furnace #2, but they seem to have closed off those stairs and ladders, which is a shame. It's a great place to take pictures.

Could be biased because I worked in the steel industry, but this place is awesome. Great historical location that has a foundry onsite! The muller is actually still there, after all these years. Tuyeres are gone, but you can still tell how it operated. There's informational stands across the park, a new visitors' center with free tours (please donate!!!), the team keeps it clean, and there are clean bathrooms. Love that this is a music venue, weddings happen here (been to one at Sloss), and haunted house. Glad to see this fundamental structure that made Birmingham is still here entertaining us and of historical value. Please make it a point to come here at least once while in town!

It's where my Dad worked as a crane operator when it was U.S. Pipe. I remember many stories he told. My brother's son's Celebration of Life was held there in auditorium. There were over 300 friends and family members for Dr. Joshua Hodge who published a history book before his death. He became an Alabama author and historian.

Definitely a must see if you visit Birmingham! Sloss Furnaces tells the story of the economic development of Birmingham. So many interesting facts about the furnace and the people who worked there. As I was walking through and reading the displays, I couldnt help but think about the working conditions there. I read of several industrial accidents and unfortunately lives lost. Went there for Halloween, it was okay considering I got in free. My only complaint is about all the smokers. They either need to have a designated smoking area, or a smoke-free night.

Very interesting place. The host as the visitor center was very knowledgeable and friendly. Walking around the furnace you get a very great sense of history. Definitely worth a visit.

I give it a 8 out of 10. I'm a furry from Minnesota, came to Alabama for the girl friend to visit her home state and wanted to check out a haunt, i used to work at a haunt back in minnesota, anyway... I wasn't scared, that was a bummer, I didn't know anything about the 10 dollar neon light necklesses, other wise I would've bought on one in a heart beat. I loved the sewer part of the maze, I'm a huge fan of sewers and vampire houses, put them together, and I'm home.anyway. I would recommend this haunt AND the extreme neckless. We were gonna go again knowing this is our ONLY weekend in Alabama. It would've been 30 bucks each to do that. Uhmm.....excuse my french.... HELL NO. Not only cause of the money. I felt ignored when the kids before us had necklessess and the attention. Anyway, hope my comment helps you. I'm foxx from Minnesota, worked at valleyscare and dead end hayride..... Have a nice day.

Fun place to visit as a kid. Cool tour of the place with lots of history. They also have a great haunted house every year. Would recommend if you wanted to know some more history about Birmingham.

Four stars for just being able to shoot pictures from the parking lot. Would probably be 5 stars if we had the time to enter. If you are a photographer, this is like shooting fish in a barrel.

After working in the aluminum industry for many years, it was nostalgic to visit this factory. I could imaging the workers pulling slag from the furnace, the loud noises and sparks flying. It's very somber now, a relic, very sobering to see it idle after so much history.

Really neat. There furnaces were available and accessible for disabled viewers. The visitors' centre had the history of the furnaces along with a few pieces of art.

Amazing place! They let you roam around and experience it for yourself. Very cool part of history.

Great site that lets you get up close to large machines that where used to produce steel. There are plaques that describe the process and the people. It was windy, and some dust was blown into our eyes, so be prepared for that.

Cool place to go take pictures. If you bring your own photographer, they charge you a fee - I think it is only like $10 or something.

They have scheduled open hours. Place is surrounded by a fence. If it’s not “open,” you’ll only get a view from the road. It’s a cool place.
