Reviews of McWane Science Center
Alyssa Lee
We love coming to the McWane Science Center! The itty bitty magic city is perfect for my one year old. The center itself is great, especially on a hot day. We also LOVE the new dragon exhibit.
Robert Ball Jr
Absolutely must see if you have any dragon connoisseurs in your family. The 3rd floor is currently mostly a dragon exhibit. Great activities for engagement. The “Wings over Water” iMax documentary is very informative and interesting. The comment about parking are all accurate. It is a tight spot.
Nancy Taylor
The first floor is wonderful for young kids to explore and have a lot of fun. Third floor dragons were absolutely amazing. The aquarium in the basement was a bit disappointing. One of the sharks had a big sore.
Eric Markham
Amazing place!!!! My wife and I took our 8 yr old son who loves science and he thought it was so cool! I'm close to 40 and I loved it.
Paul Young
Informative and fun. Not two words that you use together often. Aquarium in the Basement and three floors on top full of kid friendly activities. It was well worth the drive from Huntsville. One adult and two kids plus parking was around $56. This is great place for kids of all ages.
Sarh Max
The family had a great time. Lots of fun and educational exhibits. My most memorable activity was playing a "guess who" game in the space center. The kids loved the Aquarium and IMAX theater was amazing.
J Hall
We had a great time at McWane today. We came at 10:30, and left for lunch and an orthodontist appt. Then, we came back. We were able to explore all 4 floors before our 2 hour ride back home. My kids were so happy I took them. The staff was great, it wasn't too crowded at 11ish, and by 2:30, it wasn't crowded at all.
joshua allen
Their dragon exhibit was tons of fun for my daughter as well as many of the other interactive and science experiences. One of the best children’s exhibit/museum places we have been and I wish there was something like this where I live.
sean williamson
Family membership is worth it's cost. Lots of fun for toddler(itty-bitty magic city) great rotating exhibits and very friendly staff. As much as it rains in the southeast, being able to audible weekend plans to go here is awesome.
Cory & Valerie
This place was amazing it has to have everything for all ages I had a great time my daughter even more making her happy is my biggest win ever
DL Gelpin
I can’t remember the last time I’d visited this place. It was busy and bustling on a early Saturday afternoon. The staff was cordial and friendly while accommodating customers. The exhibits were pretty cool and informative. Great place to spend an afternoon with the family. The Legos exhibit was my favorite! I love how they incorporated local talent exhibits. Awesome job!
Jon Wieberg
The science museum is an awesome place for a day trip, and the kids loved it. I'm very surprised that it was not busier. It was practically empty.
Our kids loved being able to pet the sting rays and the tiny town.
We had 1 senior, 2 adults, 2 kids, and parking, and it was around $75.
They change features out, so there's something new every few months.
Valerie Walker
Our family came to Birmingham for a weekend trip and had several people tell us to check this place out. It was awesome! We (the adults) had fun and so did our daughter! Highly recommend!

Plenty to do here. There are stairs & an elevator if needed. There is a small food cafe but it closed before I could try it. You will get a token at the counter if you used the parking deck & it's like a dollar off the rate.
Taylor Adams
Brought my nephew here on his recent vacation and he’s finally old enough (9) to really enjoy it. He loved all of the hands-on exhibits and he had a great time learning new science concepts. The LEGO exhibit on the top floor was my favorite attraction. You can build and kind of lego structure you want, and you can also build your own lego car and race it down a giant ramp; it made me feel like a kid again. My only complaint is some of the exhibits were either broken or only partially functioning, and most of the exhibits haven’t changed since my last visit 4 years ago. I also love that they’ve reinforced the mask mandate and have faculty checking for masks on each floor.
Stephanie Bienvenu
Three kids, ages 5, 10, and 12, all enjoyed our afternoon here! Fun and interactive exhibits. Lots of learning. Definitely recommend. We arrive around 1:00 and had gone though everything by 3:30/4:00.
Joey Lodico
It was a very nice place to take kids had a lot of things to do multi level It has some cool sea life
Darius Jackson
Good place, but they really need to clean kids play areas often. Have been twice with 9 month old and neither time, other than closing did anyone clean and sanitize. Our 9 month old, contracted rsv. While cleaning might not fully have prevented the outcome, we'll never know since they don't do any during the playing time.
So for us, we most likely will not be back for a while.
The museum and attractions are fine.
3 stars because it is a nice place.
Jessica
Great for all ages, so much to explore! If you're looking to grab a bite to eat, their cafe has a Bean Sprouts and the food is very flavorful and filling. I ordered the Chickadilla 😋
Lory Honnoll
It was so much fun and for all ages. So many things to do and learn. Will be back for a future visit.
Trina McCall
Kids had a great time in Itty Bitty Magic City.
We were there for feeding time of the sharks and rays. We love new experiences.
Deborah Tidwell
Great fun for whole family! Took the 9and 12 year old grandsons while in Birmingham.
Coty Hall
A very fun experience for the kids. We brought my daughter when she was 3 and again at 5. Much of it was the same but this time some of the exhibits were offline due to COVID I imagine. The exhibits range from toddlers up to young kids but the older kids stuff doesn't entertain the little ones so much. Too much reading. Fun experience, I haven't taken the kiddo to the cinema yet because she is pretty difficult to keep still.
Ebony Woney
My son (4) had such a great time that we visited twice back to back. It was a really great experience not just for him but the whole family.
Shanna Lasko
This science center is so much fun. The kids were so busy and interactive that they did not want to leave. They have so many different areas for the kids to explore and learn. They also have a great gift shop with fun selections. You can fun and educational gifts here.
Rachel McConnell
Take all of my children ages 2-10 years old, at least twice a month. There's always something fun to do. I recommend planning to be there at least a few hours in order for your child to see everything. My kids always enjoy the Itty Bitty Magic City the most!!!
Natasha G
This is a wonderful place! 4 floors of fun and science!
Jenny Cotney
This was our first time here, but not my daughter's. She is 10 and she absolutely loves the McWayne Center. This is the one place she will read and doesn't mind doing so. The hands on experience makes learning fun. The Imax theater was a wonderful experience as well. I only gave it 4 stars because several exhibits were closed. I was disappointed to see this. We had full access and got to watch one movie for $20 each, $15 for kids under 12. No more expensive really than anything else you could do for a day. We will for sure be going back!
Mariessa Theno
My boys 9,5 had a blast. Hubby and and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as well. Our only complaint was that our vehicles will not fit in the parking structure. We'll be back again.
Samuel White
Amazing! Great staff! Go for the membership cause your kids will want to go back!
mtuscaloosa
My kid enjoyed his field trip here. Noticed some of the exhibits didn’t work and the 3rd floor was closed due to an exhibit change. Still was a good time and learning experience.
Melody Owen
We went for the first time as a family. We got there at 10am just as it opened. It does fill up quickly. My son enjoyed the itty bitty city they have for smaller kids. There are different pretend play areas for smaller kids there such as grocery store, diner, car repair shop and so on. My husband and I enjoyed looking at the exhibits. We saw dinosaur fossils of Alabama and birds, insects too. It's easy to move a stroller around. Good markings to find elevators. There are family restrooms which we did have to use to change a diaper. There is an IMAX theater which plays several different movies if interested. You can buy tickets for both IMAX and for the science center. You can buy tickets at the counter or buy online. The shop is cute and has some neat kits, books, toys, t shirts and so on. We weren't able to go pet the sharks and rays they have there, my son was exhausted so we definitely have to go back. There were many people in line for the sharks and rays so you may have to stand in line for awhile. There seems to be things to do for most any age. Enjoy! Go learn some things!
Jamie Russell
Once again the cafe ruins the entire experience. Museum was nice, itty bitty was dirty, but mostly good. But the cafe....closed the kitchen at 2:18. It doesn't close until 3....turning people away at 2:18.... pathetic
Virginia Walker
Very busy on the weekends. I'll be aiming for a weekday next time. Overall a pleasant visit, but because there were SO many people, there were lines for several exhibits and many were askew.
Allen Adderholt
The only thing keeping this visit from being a 5 star was the parking deck. The space between the parked cars and the travel lanes in the deck is not safe for unloading small kids from a vehicle. Several times cars came by our vehicle at a distance a 3 or 4 feet while loading kids into a stroller.
Southern Girl Studios
One of the BEST things to do with kids in this town!! Absolutely worth every penny. I highly recommend buying the combo ticket with a Imax dome theater ticket. It was spectacular!!
Chelsea Rand
Took my 6 year old this weekend! She absolutely loved it..Wide variety of science activities to keep the kids involved and excited. (water, weather, dinosaurs, birds, bugs, etc.) Think we spent about 2.5-3 hrs going through all the exhibits. My fave part were the sting rays which unfortunately the kids can't touch the rays anymore due to COVID-19. On account of COVID-19 modifications, parents should realize this museum requires a TON of touching things.. there are disinfectant wipes throughout the facility but still! We also attended the IMAX film Antarctica in the Laser Dome thing, really nice! Would recommend the whole trip to anybody.
Melissa Alexander Mays
The 3 yr old LOVED it but me & my 80 yr old mom not so much. It would have been much more enjoyable had we had a guide or more detail but with 3 floors of activities to do and see on ur own was more confusion with guest roaming about it was just chaotic. After two& half hours there we started to leave, I was pushing my mom in wheelchair & the 3 yr old was sitting in her lap just as we exited the main entry (still on the walkway)the wheelchair abrubtly came to stop& I hurt my hand(cut my knuckle pretty bad) tryn to keep my mom& 3 yr old safe. Overall it could have been a much more enjoyable outcome if the slides,Zipline & theater would have been open but they were closed for renovations.
Erica White
This will always be a fun time fave for me and my son I recently just went and saw the Black Panther Wakanda Forever in the imax theater (had no idea) they even played movies there but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and energy
Paula Waldrep
McWane science center was great even with some activities closed due to covid. Facility was clean lots of hand sanitizer stations throughout the building. The custodian was there cleaning areas and sanitizing them. I would definitely recommend taking your children there. My girls were 12 and 13 and they had a really good time.
melissa samsel
This place is so fun!! We loved everything and learned so much! I love that it is so interactive, and it allows the kids to engage in experiments!
Maggie Ann
Awesome as always!! Great leave to take a homeschooler!!
Erica Gates
Perfect for families with children of all ages. They have a tiny city for babies and toddlers but they let us bring our 7 year old and 6 year old niece in with our 1 and 4 year old.
s m
Very fun and clean. Didn’t like that they didn’t have the paper things to lay down on the changing table but I used a paper towel and it work just as good.
Tomar Crauswell
This place is amazing! I honestly don't remember when I have had so much fun. Everything is interactive! I played like a kid all day long. Awesome place for a family day but if you don't have children it's just as much fun for adults. They have a bed of nails, dinosaurs, bubbles, lights, an Imax movie just to name a few. There is just too much to list! My favorite was the interactive light screen (pictured below). We really had a great time. Honestly my boyfriend and I played like little kids all day long. I can't wait to go back!
K McClain
Very fun and educational. Will definitely return. My toddler and my teenager loved it. Something for the whole family to enjoy. Pros would be lunch options. Their website shows way more options than what is actually available.
Wendy Cotton
I feel that for the price of admission ($15 per adult, $12 per child,2 and under free) you get your money's worth. They have four floors each dedicated to a different exhibit and hands on experience. They even have a area for the little ones. There is a parking deck ($5). They do have elevators. You can go to the water exhibits. It has different fish tanks and you can also touch baby stingrays and baby sharks. There is so much to see and do. They also have a theater inside. They have a combination price ($20 for adults and $15 for children). The staff does hands on science experiments with the children.
Tina Rowland
Was here on a school field trip. It was great. Lunch provided for the kids was perfect for them. We enjoyed exploring all floors. One thing I loved was when a member of the staff noticed the student I was with was having sensory overload, he asked me if we needed to use the sensory room. I was so excited. He said generally use is for 20 minutes just in case someone else needed it. Door was locked from outside so no one to barge in on us. Lights were adjustable. Pictures below of what is inside. 2 big bean bags, a swing, a water light, and a few other things. Also loved they had family restrooms available for use.
Sarah Shute
This place is so fun for all ages. My 2 and 4 year olds really enjoyed Itty Bitty City on the 2nd floor. It was nice to know that they couldn't escape so I could focus on one child at a time. The other floors seem more geared toward older kids, but there really is something for everyone. It is also a really great price for a place like this. If you haven't been, please go!
Love Freeman
We Loved it! Had so much fun. Was disappointed because we paid for IMax but couldn't watch it because they were overbooked. But exploring was lovely
Deborah Price
Lots of fun things to do ..for grandma and the grand kids..you wont be disappointed..great science place!
Christina Rheaume
Three generations of my family went for a day and everyone from my 18 month old niece to my parents who are in their 70s had a wonderful time! Everything was in working order and the variety of activities and subject matter was top notch. If you’re in the area come spend the day it’s well worth it.
Chelsea Johnston
We had a great experience at McWane Scuence Center. There are a ton of activities for kids, both young and old! There’s an area dedicated for kids 6 and younger. Within that section, there is an area for kids 2 and under. My 11 month old daughter really enjoyed that area, while my 3 year old enjoyed the Itty Bitty section. There’s also a family bathroom within that part of the museum, which is super helpful. I would definitely recommend coming her if you have kids.
FYI: within walking distance from the Hilton Garden Inn / Home2.
Kelly KK Kilgore
Mcwane Science Center takes between 4 n 5 hrs to see it all. Popular time is Fridays. They open at 9am close at 5pm. Things you will see.
Aquarium
They 280seat Imax Dome Theater witch is amazing to view.
Tickets range from $8.00 to $16.00 MY children and myself love it each time we visit. I recommend going if your looking for something different n fun visit the
Mcwane Science Center
Kara Larson
I love science museums and decided to check this one out. While there are plenty of activities for kids -- multiple play areas, interactive exhibits, etc -- I found there was also enough to keep adults entertained too. The touch pool was great, and I particularly enjoyed the museum collection on the 2nd floor. It's obviously a quicker visit as an adult, but it was time well spent. The museum does a good job of covering a broad variety of the sciences, and the fossils are pretty neat.
Dewey Pittman Jr
Enjoyed this visit. Joined my God daughters kindergarten class for a trip and had a ball. Planning to return soon. Love the public parking. So many experiences inside.
Tabatha Reynolds
It was fun but I expected more or maybe different, but we had fun and best theater
Valencia Cheatom-Evans
We enjoyed it. It was my granddaughter Birthday and she ran her down all over and I loved and watched her.
Krystal Montcrieff
I've been to a couple different science centers, but this one blows them all away! There is so much to do, and for all ages. My children had so much fun and have been asking to go back since we left.
Joseph Babitsky
A fun time for kids and kids at heart! A group of friends and I spent a few hours looking around the 4 floors and really enjoyed exploring. We may not have been in the target age range but it was still a blast! I recommend stopping by if you want to spend an afternoon exploring some really cool scientific exhibits.
Jeremy Roselle
Super cool place. Perfect for families. SuperIMAX theatre was amazing. Saw the film about the ocean. Will go back soon. First time visiting. Ran out of time. Tons of space and things to learn about. Never made it to the 2nd and third floors. Very impressed.
The Book Of Abby
We took the summer kids of JEFCOED and they had a blast.
Elizabeth Gary
We really had a great day celebrating Abella's 6th Birthday! The McWane Center is a great STEAM experience with tons of hands on activities for the kiddos! Our girls love learning and the McWane Center allows their creative minds to explore!
Theresa C
This was SUPER fun to go to! Especially if you add the IMAX to your adventure! For me, petting the Sting Ray's and sharks was the best... but my daughter loves the tension bike, and the tornado simulator!
Devin Bateman
This has always been one of my favorite places to go. I had so much fun taking my kids for the first time and the itty bitty area is great for younger children. We had a blast. The price is reasonable to get in. We will be taking more trips here.
Chris Singleton
McWayne Center was excellent with a great price. Lots of fun technology that I as an adult and an 8 year old had so much fun with. The new Dragon exhibit was perfect and even had a clue hunt involved.
Only bad thing was the vending machines didn't all accept cards, and one of the machines only accepted change. Also, $4 bottled drinks....
Megan Case
This place was so much fun and very interesting! I didn't get a lot of pictures because I was having too much fun just enjoying it. Honestly a great place to visit for science lovers of any age.
Sara Leasy
We went for a school field trip. My son keeps asking if we can go back. He loved it there. Thank you for providing an awesome learning environment for kids. Thank you for the elevators; but PLEASE add more BENCHES!
Tiffany Wallace
It was a very fun and interactive learning experience for everyone. There were all sorts of activities for all ages. Some of the staff members could've been a bit friendlier, but other than that, my daughter and I really enjoyed our time there.
James Bentley
Lots of fun and educational! A wonderful place to take the family.
Candice Rutledge
The center is great, but we went for a field trip and there were a couple of other schools that day...so, a few hundred kids running around (some unsupervised) wasn't what I'd call fun. And, we didn't get an option for lunch. It was chicken bites, small bag of plain chips, small pack of gummies, and a small bottle of water...with 0 napkins and 2 little packets of ketchup 😕. They do have an open stingray and shark "petting tank" which was really cool though! I would definitely suggest going on a day when they don't have several schools scheduled to be there.
Kimberly Cole Zemke
WOW!!! All I can say is WOW! Took 3 kiddos there and they LOVED it. Sooooo much to see and do!! Bed of nails, dancing on colors, science experiments, DINOSAURS!, Bird exhibits, huge animatronic dragons!! There was so many things for the kids to do it took over 4 hours. A 3 year old, 5 and a 6 year old were overjoyed! I enjoyed it immensley also. We are ready to go again.
Regina Wright
First visit for these kids. They enjoyed it. All smiles like opening presents. Lots of interaction and hands on.
Francis Herring
We had a great time at the McWane center. Love all the hands on activity's and how each floor is different. They hosted our Christmas party from Mercedes-Benz and done a fantastic job. They had pictures with Santa, Mercedes provided us with full moon food, we made 2 didn't kinds or ornaments, and decorated cookies.
We done the IMAX movie and it was about the pandas. Cute movie but when we talked into the room I started feeling sick...not my cup of tea.
We enjoyed it so much we spent 4 hours there and eager to return.
Tammie Stroud
This was the second time that we went to the McWane Science Center. Last time was really awesome which was two summers ago. This time was around spring break and it seemed like schools were there and there was no supervision with a lot of kids. Our granddaughter's got pushed out of the way or people broke in line while the girls were waiting for something like the driving video game I guess you would call it, etc. This was my husband's first time and he wasn't impressed after I told him how awesome it was with my three nephews and three granddaughters two years ago. LOL, The grandkids still had fun.
Christian Taylor
Really do like this place! Very good family fun for the little ones. Do note unless you have a kid they aren't letting you in!
Ankush Gupta
Perfect place to spend a day with Children (and even without them). If you are with Children, don't forget to visit itty bitty magic city on second floor (the floor with Dinosaurs). Also remember your time in itty bitty magic city is limited to one hour so make the most of it.
Parking is a bit of hassle (on Weekends) so try to visit as early as it opens on Weekend (cost 5$ and you can ask for a token while buying tickets or you can pay with cash or credit cards while driving out)
Bernie Wise
Had such a great day at McWane. The exhibits are always changing, bringing new and exciting things to try each time you visit. A young lady named Alia was working the World of Water exhibit and she was wonderful! So full of fun information!
Lloyd Estes
Been here before and felt like it would be a waste of money to take the kids back...HOWEVER...it was just a awesome as the first time. Seems like you find something new every time, and it's a great chance to teach your kids some things they'll likely never know like how an engine works, soundwaves, and so much more. HIGHLY recommend, and if we lived here or came regularly I'd buy the season passes for our kids in a heartbeat.
Amber Terry
My kids and I enjoyed ourselves on my daughter's field trip. So much to do there! I loved itty bitty city myself!!!
Bri Wright
Great fun for all ages! Exhibits are always changing and the food court has been renovated to have a lot of healthy options! The annual membership is definitely worth it!
A Adams
Great place to bring little ones and older ones alike to learn new things about science, our planet and even some history. Loved it when I was young and my kids love it too!
Amanda G
Such a cool kids museum but also really fun for adults. Admission + imax ticket was SOOOO worth it. After the IMAX we got a bonus surprise finding out they have aquariums in the basement and can pet sharks and stingrays there! 10/10 experience
Manley Whittier
Great place for family and the kids will have a lot of fun interacting with the exhibits.
Jada Thomas
Awesome place to be with the family. The girls loved it. All ages will love the shows and activities.
Hong Li
best place to go for kids; we have been to the Children’s museum at Atlanta/ San Francisco/Houston. This one is our favorite compared that Birmingham is fairly smaller city.
Nancy Owen
I took my son (27 and severely autistic) and his caregivers this past Thursday. I used to take my son a lot ofbthe time to McWane when was younger and easier to manage. We decided that it was time to try again although worried about him having an outburst while there. The guys at the front desk were beyond AWESOME. They recognized the situation immediately and even offered a sensory bag (Kulture City - again AWESOME) and showed me on a map where there were sensory rooms. I didn't know if we should buy the combo pack or not and decided against it. Just before I was planning on leaving my son insisted on doing the IMAX movie. Remember he is a big guy and 27 and I knew there would be a meltdown if we didn't go in and see a movie. The movie was already 10 minutes in. A sweet young lady at the concession stand/desk saw what was about to happen. She suggested I see the front desk (same guys we bought the tickets from) and see if we could buy a ticket although the movie had started. Normally you can't buy a ticket after the movie starts, but seeing the need and my desperation, they did. They understood that my son would not nor could not have waited an hour and a half for the next movie. It ended up being a really great experience. I want thank the staff for the understanding and consideration they showed. It is difficult to take an adult with severe autism out and not feel judged or stared out. We were comfortable the entire time.
Bill L
My kids loved it but I was disappointed because there were several things that didn't work correctly or had missing parts. it doesn't seem like they are investing very much in maintenance.
Steven Mooney
Always a great place to take the family. A lot of the exhibits are very dated and some are simply not functional, but they have some new things to help make up for it. The Itty Bitty Magic City is excellent for younger kids. And the dinosaur exhibit is pretty cool, too.
Melissa Spinks
We enjoyed our visit to McWane Science Center. There were lots of interesting exploratory activities for my 4 year old. I will say that Itty Bitty City could use a major upgrade. Lots of things were worn out and many things didn’t work. Many of the parts for each station were torn up, missing, or unusable. I was saddened by this because the concept is great for Itty Bitty City; It just needs some work.
Marie Paulsen
Excellent for children. Very hands on exhibits, there’s not any “don’t touch” signs anywhere. (Why didn’t they have any cool stuff like this when I was a kid. 😜)
We went during the DNA exhibit and if it’s any reflection of the kinds of exhibits they regularly have, I would say it’s well worth going again and again.
Elisabeth Gross
So much fun! Tons for kids to do, our kids range from 7 -12 and there was something for everyone! The IMAX was really cool, too!
Billy Christmas
3.5 stars. Overall a decent experience. However, for the life of me, I can't understand why there's a large section of the Science Center devoted to dragons and Oriental culture. How are mythical dragons "science"?
Tony Patterson
Came here with the Monroe County Learning Enrichment Class. We had a great time. Very interesting and educational for the students. A+!!!
Jeannie Earley
Amazing fun for all the kids! There is so much to do, and the staff is outstanding! The cafe is extremely expensive, but delicious.
Jenna Leigh Vanmatre
We had such a great time on the field trip with my niece. Very educational and fun!
Reggie Felton
Great hands on experience for kids. Lots of interactive exhibits. Everyone was having a good time there and we had to tear our kids away
Angela Marie
Took the grandbabies and what an incredible memory! From the tornado simulator to the Imax theater and every single thing between was amazing! And my granddaughter who was visiting from WI was absolutely in awe throughout the entire dinosaur experience! She has been enthralled with dinosaurs from an early age and is set on a career in paleontology. At 12 yrs old she is genius level on anything dinosaur and has even caught the attention of a paleo professor in Scotland who offered her a spot there at college time. She would've been quite content in that one area the entire day I believe. Thanks for such a learning, fun family place to the community!
Beth Kent (Miiplayboi)
Such a great place to take not only small children but adults as well. I'm 33 yrs old and you learn some interesting things
David Berkowitz
What a rich and vibrant spot for children and anyone lucky enough to accompany of them. There’s more than enough physical, experiential, and intellectual material to make this an all-day trip; good luck getting your little one out of there in a timely manner.
David Arroyo
It's an amazing place! The kids loved it. They loved it so much they actually cried when we had to leave. I gotta look into the annual membership because it is well worth coming back more than once or twice. There is stuff for all ages. My wife and I divided and conquered. I followed our toddler in the itsy bitsy city while she explored science exhibits with our 1st grader. Overall...amazing!
Jamie Powell
They have some really neat things for the kids to enjoy but the prices of the vending machines, food and drinks are absolutely ridiculous!!
Lachlan Estep
Gorgeous place full of exciting things for kids of all ages to do. The teenage volunteers were wonderful and did science experiments with my kid while we were there. I had as much fun as my six year old did. It definitely took me back to playing at Discovery when I was a child.
Fun for everyone big or small. Take the entire family and haul them all over the building. Everyone is certain to find something they enjoy.
If you don't have fun while here, you're determined to have a bad time.
Joseph Siskey
This place is great for kids. My son and his friends had a great time.
Shir Carson
Awesome place for activating little scientists, explorers and inventor’s minds. Parents have just as much fun too! Nice touch to the Cafe’.
Devin Brianne
We stopped here on our way to Florida with two small kids. The toddler area is fantastic. We loved the summer exhibit on dinosaurs. It's right off the exit, so if you are passing through I would recommend it for sure.
Matt Baber
This place has a good balance for all ages. Plenty of interactive but still education activities for younger children. The floor that details the wild animals of Alabama was particularly interesting. The top floor had some engaging exhibits around the mechanics of automobiles. Great place for STEM learning!
Kimberly Ragsdale
Do much fun! We had a blast! It was our daughter's 18th birthday!

An excellent interactive science museum for all ages. Engaging activities for all skill levels, educational staff and wonderful exhibits. When I visited, kids as young as five were getting to participate in a cow eye dissection! What an awesome experience for young, curious folks! Older kids will also enjoy activities regarding physics, biology, zoology, meteorology, and so much more. It's an incredible museum that is perfect for families in or visiting Birmingham. Be prepared to stay for hours- it's that much fun!
Nicole White
Imax is okay but wish they would get 4DX
Jessica G
I've visited many science museums and McWane is one of my favorites! It has 4 stories of fun, interactive, experiences that are fun for the whole family! You won't regret a visit.

We loved the trip to the Mcwane center! You can make a day trip of it here and get lost in all of the interesting things they have to do. My daughter really enjoyed the new guitar experience that is there now. I would definitely recommend anyone visiting.
Tiffany Bishop
I will never stop loving this place. My nephew (20 months) was finally old enough to enjoy it and boy did he! I'm so glad I got to take him to his first of many trips to McWane.
Mark Carnehl

Great place for kids of all ages! And the annual membership program is a great deal!
Brigette Bridges
We really enjoy this place. I took my twin 10 year old grandsons and my adult autistic son. They all had a blast. The only thing I would change is I wish they had more options in the cafe.
Dave Wilson
Great place to take the kids! Clean and friendly place. A lot of interactive displays. While we were there they had several train tables set up, even one Harry Potter themed....very cool!
Sara M
Lots of fun for all ages. Not all of the exhibits were open/working which was disappointing but overall a great place. Will definitely go again.
Matthew Voke
Good science center for the kids. The itty bitty city had tons of interactive toys/equipment/props for the kids to play with.
Elizabeth Cooper
We really enjoy coming to the McWane Center. My little is still a toddler but there is plenty for him to do, especially in the itty bitty Magic City. That's our favorite part. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because there are a few things here and there that need repair or updating. Other than that we love it.
Deidra Jackson
We had an amazing time visiting here! My son was astonished by everything they had to offer.. (but, hey, he's 9 lol)
Our favorite thing was the Imax Dome Theatre though.. AWESOMESAUCE!! 😍😍
Simply breath taking! …
DeLisa Whittaker
We love any day at Mcwane, but special days like this week's Turkey Science activities addition make it part of our special memories as family during precious time together with our kiddo.
Greg Weaver
Kids had a great time. The sharks and stinks rays didn't want to be petted today.
April Reno
Took my family to the Imax Dome theater to watch Jaws. We had a great time. Wasn't to costly and the staff was awesome.
Andrew Curtis
Some of the things we wanted to do they took away to prepare for a different event, that wasn't ready yet. So we was a lil bummed
Antoinette Smith
My grandchildren really had a blast @ the
McWANE CENTER the atmosphere was awesome. I really enjoyed myself. And I will come again.
Candice Brown
Kids loved the McWane Center and so did it. The kids wefe learning while having fun. Will definilty be going back during the summer break.
DerickandChell Newton
This was an amazing experience. We had a great day as a family with our 4 year old. There are 4 floors of education and excitement. We plan to be back.
Christine LaVear
we live in Missouri stopped in on our way home to break up the drive...#1 Science center I have ever visited it's a magic house, science center, and mini aquarium all in one and worth every penny of there admission price...
Shanda Shelton
The staff here is absolutely wonderful; always available to answer any questions the kids might have. Great place to take the kids for an affordable afternoon activity.
Jackie Joyce
Very educational. Fun for kids and adults. Indoor and outdoor
Emily Grytz
My 5yo just love it even I visit this almost every week..
Vikash Kansal
Great place for kids. Good way for kids to get interested in Science. Always some kind of workshop going on here especially on weekends.
Jan Parks
Grandkids can't wait to go back! We brought a season pass just before the pandemic 😟 but they extended it for us so we'll go as often as we're able! …
Jim Crapia
Always a great mind-opening experience. Be sure to check out the cool model railroad displays running for a limited time
Lele D
It was brilliant, had a blast. There was so much to do and not enough time to everything. Itty Bitty Magic City was awesome, my niece had a wonderful time. I love it and it's definitely a place I will come back too.
Neq H
Loved it! So much to do and your children are learning as they play. Looking forward to going again!!
Raven Peoples
Soo much fun!!
We enjoyed it! Our kiddo is 2.5 and he had a blast! There were age appropriate activities for him and for parents! Parking was reasonable. Prices were fair. I would 100% recommend!
Miranda Wilkes
Such a great place for family fun. We come here about once a month. Itty bitty magic city is SO much fun for little ones kindergarten and below. You can learn all kinds of things here while playing. It’s great when kids are entertained and moms can chill. There’s also an IMAX and yummy popcorn to be had. Love it so much we have had an annual membership for a few years now. There’s also a cafeteria on the main level. Go...you won’t regret it!
Stephen Admire
This was fun... Unfortunately we were driving through so we couldn't stay as long as we wanted.
Benjamin Hunter
Had a fun experience for the whole family. Watched Dr. Strange on Imax and was mesmerized.
TJ McDonald
It's a great place unfortunately some equipment doesn't work because kids have broken a few things but my kids still had a great time!
Joshua Montemayor
Great place to take the kids. Had several different areas to keep the kids entertained the whole day. Wide age range, so will be fun for toddlers to pre teens.
Terrie Bailey
My grandkids still enjoy visiting but their interest has become less over the years. They've all aged out of Itty Bitty Magic city and are getting tired of other permanent exhibits/activities. We will probably take a break from it for awhile.
Buckie Harrison
5 Floors to geek out on. Bring the whole family. It was worth the long drive and it gives you a opportunity for something different to do and its a great science learning experience.
THOMAS FITZPATRICK
My 5 year old granddaughter loves this place. Lots of hands on things to do
Desiree Buchanan
My kids had and blast and the theater is awesome.
Cindy Lee
Wonderful staff. A great place to play learn and try new things. More things than you can do in a day. You can walk and look or role play in the kids store or kitchen.
Karlinda Hernandez
The perfect place to go with your little ones. They can play, have fun and learn.
Sarah Bohannon
We all had a blast!!!!! We had ages 40 to 2! We all found something fun to do!
Molly Waddell
My daughter's class went on a field trip here should I brought all her brothers and sisters with us and we made a day of it so much to do one day is not enough to experience the whole place
Octavia “Eight” Hendricks
Could've been a little more in order but other than that for our first visit ever the children enjoyed theirselves.
Cortney C
We're members. We always have a good time here. We took a mental health day off and went on a weekday morning. We almost had the place to ourselves and the 'big kids' got to have fun too!
Lakendra Ladd
Great atmosphere. Kids can spend hours here with all the interactive stations.
James Faulkner
Looks like it can be alot of fun but our family will call and ask if there is a feld trip scheduled for that day before wr go back again. There were hundreds and hundreds of wild children fighting over everything. It was not a good experience because it was way way too crowded. But without feld trips going on it seems like it would be an enjoyable experience for the family.
Stephanie Sword
Drove from Atlanta for a fun winter break museum, didn’t disappoint, start to finish fun was had
Cherri Simmons
My child loves exploring @ McWane! I really like it too😉 Always a new adventure when we come. Very cool traveling exhibits come through and there's something for every age. If you plan to visit often, get the pass - comes with free parking. …
Chris Bloomfield
Some of the staff was friendly, some not so much. Lots of hands on activities for the kids. I liked the mix of aquarium, dinosaurs, and science.
RA 46
Excellent for kids. Really surprised me. My grandson (3yrs old) loved it.
scott harris
Hadn't been here in years but thought there was more to it. Got IMax tickets for 4:30 because I thought it would take longer to let my son go thru everything. 11/2 hrs we are done and waiting. Cafe closed before 3 and nothing in the area to walk to.
So we are sitting in a vending area drinking $4.00 sodas waiting for movie time.
If this is going to be a stand alone attraction it needs to grow.
Andrew Rolen
The McWane center is awesome! I was worried that my girls (2 and 4) were too young to enjoy the exhibits but they have had a blast. We have made it a point to come here every time that we are in Birmingham. We have now been there 4 times and my girls have been entertained every time (and I have gotten some much-needed down time from fighting, whining, etc). I have always felt like my kids were safe and able to "be free". Every floor is open enough to allow me to keep an eye on them without having to micro-manage thier every move, which makes me happier and makes them happier. The Itty Bitty Magic City has excellent pretend environments (fire trucks, garden, store, restaurant, etc.) for them to play all kinds of make believe and they have a section where the kids can put balls in tubes and they shoot all around the room. My husband and I enjoyed the exhibits too. Great for all ages!
Tanja 1975
Great place, my 4 year old son can't wait to go again...
Amanda Williams
Awesome place for kids & adults! Great Experience! Reasonable prices.
Holly Smith
My two grown sons and I rode the Amtrak train for a day visit in Birmingham. The city is dilapidated but has great architecture and could be so much more! We found this museum and it is really nice. The curator or board who governs this museum have placed a lot of thought, planning of the layout, with a keen sense of what young minds need to from a science museum. It made our trip worth while to visit this little nugget of gold in the middle of Birmingham.
Matthew Standland
I thoroughly enjoyed this place. My wife and I are both scientists and felt like kids in here.
Dan Hughes
This is a nice place but seems to be suffering some as the pandemic drags on. Still a fun place to visit but keep your expectations low. They do have a lot of hands on activities that are fun for grade school to middle school age kids. They have food options now but they are a bit pricey. There are some other options for food near by and you can leave and re-enter. The area is safe-ish during the day. Just your typical downtown in a city stuff like homeless people milling around, etc. I know I'm not really selling it here but it really is worth going to and could definitely use the support right now!
christina carroll
Loved it really great place to take your kids and family
Gwyn Sanders
This place is awesome my son had so much fun learning and playing .exploring new and exciting things.
brooke beaver
We have been here many many times and my girls have always loved it. The main floor is by far a favorite, especially the bubbles. The 2nd floor has a bunch of dinosaurs and a place to dig fossils. It also has itty bitty magic city which is amazing, its geared for ages 5 and under. The 3rd floor can be lackluster at times but, the exhibits do always change. The basement level has stingrays that you can pet which is always a hit. The McWane Science Center is by far one of our favorite places in Birmingham.
Ronald Redd
Great place to take family of all ages. My son and I went, we both had a great time. Lots of room for the young ones to feel free while learning.
Kimberly P. Bates
Very educational. Several features needed attention but overall we enjoyed it
Britt
I have visited once & have very specific tips. This is a fantastic, clean museum with almost every permanent exhibit being fully functional (some parts needed repair, but very minimal). My kids spent over 4 hours here & wanted to return the next day. They stayed so long at some exhibits that we didn't even get to them all. Itty Bitty Magic City was ~90 mins. of our visit, & they would have stayed longer if it weren't closing time!
If you plan to visit here more than once a year, the family membership redeems its cost for our family of 6 in 2 visits!
The McWane parking deck clearance is 6' 8", so be sure your vehicle fits! Our family member's extended-bed pickup couldn't get past the tight turn up the ramp into the deck & had to find other parking.
You can pay for a token to exit the deck when you buy tickets/check in, but you have to make sure to keep up with it while you are there, & if you leave to walk out & eat, etc. Next time I will just pay at the exit.
You get a sticker when you check in. As long as you have these stickers on, you may exit & re-enter for free. I took a photo of my group with their stickers on & a selfie with mine JUST in CASE any of my 5-9 y/os lost theirs. They are very sticky stickers, but I would put them on kids' backs if they might get wet because they can fall off then.
Be prepared with a towel & a change of clothes if your child is going into (age 6 & under) Itty Bitty Magic City area on floor 2. Older siblings ARE allowed in with you. There is a LOT of water play opportunity in this area; they do provide heavy, sleeved aprons for kids. Mine also got wet on floor 1 at the balls floating in water spouts & the bubbles. There is a bathroom by the bubbles area you can rinse your hands off in.
You will get your arm wet if you try to pet the sea life on the lower level, but there's no splashing going on there. My kids didn't get to pet anything, though we tried for ~10 mins. Don't get their hopes up too much. It can be a long wait for them to swim close enough to touch them, & the walls of the tank are so high that little ones have to be lifted up to do it.
No food or drink is allowed into the museum or the allergy-friendly Bean Sprouts restaurant on floor 1. You can, however, exit (keeping your stickers on!) to eat. We visited Pizitz Food Hall across the street.
BE CAREFUL exiting to walk to Pizitz. My 5 y/o almost got run over by a man flying down the sidewalk on a scooter. My son saw the door open when someone pushed the handicap accessibility button, slipped outside onto the sidewalk, & could have run into the street. My heart stopped. It was such a close call. It's not a kid-friendly exit from the museum, AT ALL.
The food is extremely varied at Pizitz, which was fun, but VERY expensive for the quantity, & I HIGHLY recommend asking what the wait time is before you order at any stall, & ordering at the next stall while you are waiting for your first order to be prepared. It may look like there's no wait because no one is standing by the stall, but people order & walk off, AND stalls are filling food delivery service orders. We got there ~1pm. I waited 40 mins for a fried shrimp meal at the Nola Ice stall (~$19), ~12 minutes for one burrito at Unos Tacos (~$13), ~8 minutes for ramen at Pho Pho (~$12), & no wait at Ono Poke for an ahi tuna Poke bowl (~$13). That doesn't include drinks, which I did not buy because we brought water bottles, & doesn't include tips, which every stall asks for electronically. Next time I will eat at Bean Sprouts or bring our own lunch.
There are water fountains at McWane, but we had trouble finding ones that were operational. The ones on floor 3 by the elevators worked for us.
There are lots of bathrooms, so it was easy to get to one. Pick up a map as you enter floor 1 or save screen shots of their online maps on your phone so you can know where the restrooms are in relation to you BEFORE you need to rush to one.
If you found this review helpful, please give it a thumbs up! Thanks!

Had a great time! Things for everyone's interest. A few exhibits were broken but overall a great time.
Big Island Grown Cowgirl
This place was so much fun! So many hands on things to do! For the young and old to enjoy!
Mrs Kai
What a great learning experience!! My husband is a scientist and he enjoyed it more than I date
Jason Hayes
Great place to visit with the family. Very knowledgeable staff and great learning experience.
Ellen Garner
Really cool place! Very interactive.
Kristopher Wise
At least as good as the Orlando Science Center. They have a few of the same exhibits like "What is Nano" and few engineering demos are similar. They have a floor that has a medium size Aquarium of small tanks, touch-a-Ray and the Alabama Watershed. Don't miss the balance bike on the top floor. When we went the traveling exhibit was very cool "Design Zone". IMAX movies are not included (they are in Orlando) If you have a preK kid, you will get to access the best part of the Science Center and probably spend all day there, the itty bitty Magic City Childrens Museum. We were able to get in 5 people for free with our Orlando Science Center Membership but parking was $5 which was still totally worth it.
Samantha Colvin
We went there on a field trip, it is great the only thing I would change is that they have a person for each floor to explain all the things they have for the kids and what they do for science reasons. That would be awesome! Otherwise, love it!
Lori Sharum
Really fun and the staff is friendly and helpful. We enjoyed it and definitely recommend visiting McWane Science Museum.
Brittany Clayton
Fun place for a family outing. Keeps the little ones entertained and the exhibit on the third floor changes keeping things interesting.
Gisell hunt
Alot of fun and educational activities. Would recommend.
Tammy Lee Casey
The 2nd floor was by far the kids favorite go to area.
Tabitha Chadwick
It was fun for my kids. Great experience for them. Me as a parent they need more workers on the floor to keep a eye on things, even the kids i guess since most of the parents cannot do it themselves.
Hoshi Yoshi
Great place for field trips and hands on science. The "genius lab" has local groups come by throughout the year to do demonstrations, such as sheep brain dissections during brain awareness week.
Shedria Petty
McWane has always been a family favorite for us. The staff, the exhibits, the atmosphere is amazing. Even as a former employee, this place is still one of my favorites. Excellent work environment.
Lawrence Cole
Great place for young kids. Could be better. Enjoyed the time with the kids.
Cee Cee Carter
I planned a trip to visit the Science Center on 11 December with my grandkids. The facility was pretty crowded but not claustrophobic. The facility was clean and the exhibits were quite interesting. Parking is $5 per vehicle which was unexpected but manageable.
Heather Rettig
We love McWane! Also the membership honors entrance to several other museums across the country. The membership is worth it if you intend to come multiple times within one year.
Itty bitty city is AMAZING. Your child must be 6 or younger to enter. Older children can join as long as someone in your group is in the 6 and below age range.
A D
Usually a great experience but it seemed a little underwhelming this time. The TMNT experience was okay but it was just okay. Not all the exhibits were working and the train set up for Christmas was really boring. Hope next time is better.
Michael Daniels
Kids had a blast, alot to see and do while learning. Stay for the lightning show and touch the animals always fun.
Kristi Heath
The McWane Science Center is a great place to take a high school biology class on a field trip. Students enjoy the GENEius lab where they get hands on experience with genetics curriculum and biotechnology. The facilitators have great energy and make sure everything goes smoothly.
Iain Hutchison-Hall
Kids had a blast, and definitely slept hard the night after! You'll get your money's worth bc they'll get all of their energy out!
Harlow Heath
Loved this place best things to do and bot much money! My favorite attraction had to be laying on nails. It sounds like it would hurt but it actually feels AMAZING!!
Eric Anderson
If you are vaccinated you are not required to wear a mask (No they dont ask if you have the vaccine). Very very clean plenty of space to move around and the kids will love it. It was about 80$ for 4 adults and 1 kid but it was very worth it. Get there early so you can see everything because it takes a minute. The stingrays and being able to touch them was my son's favorite part. Highly recommend this place to people of all ages.
Marie Hunt
Watched Top Gun Maverick at the IMAX. Awesome movie and a must see! Employees are always very friendly and helpful! Pleasant and clean environment!
Arnab Basu
Good place to spend some time with the kids.. has variety and worth coming back a few times!
Meghean Turner
This place is amazing. It’s well worth the money for everything you get to experience. I loved the learning tables with someone there to teach you something cool and science related. The zip line car was really cool and the kids really enjoyed it. I don’t love the touch tanks because I feel like they aren’t monitored the way they should be and some of the children aren’t touching the animals as gently as they should be. Everything else was amazing and we would definitely go again.
Jaime Gould
Overall good experience they wouldn't let my sons field trip class into 2nd floor itsy bitsy exhibit even though it was on itinerary an they were all under 6 some guy was standing at entrance telling other groups they couldn't enter but other than that imax was amazing experience for all lego land needs more lol
Erica DeJarnett
Perfect for kids of all ages. Fun and educational at the same time. My 3 year old truly had a ball. Lots to see and do.
Nathan Smith
Church trip with the kids ministry. Fun was had by all. Clean facilities.
Naomi Brown
It's always interesting because they change the exhibits often. Don't miss watching a movie in the dome because it's an amazing experience. A family membership is worth the investment.
Carine Martin
It was great! We had such an awesome time.
Yolonda Thames
EXCELLENT place for growing minds!!!
Jen Cuvo
Very fun for all. Went with my just turned 4 year old and almost 8 year old. They both had a great time. Science center has a great mix of play and experiments, special exhibit was really interesting. Water exhibit engaging. We came for the dinosaurs and they were great. Highly recommend this place for a fun afternoon with kids. We spent 3 hours here and that was perfect.
KT The Bartender
Great time but we paid for parking in the ticket line and still had to pay for parking leaving out
Josie Moncada
Always super clean and fun environment for the kids!
Jessica Edmondson
Always a great place to go! We have a yearly membership! It would be nice if there was a time that the 1st-5th could also play in Itty Bitty City!
Kirsten McTernan
3-4 floors of great hands-on science! They also have an area just for toddlers and children under 6!
David Templeton
Great reasonably priced day trip for the family, lots of interesting things & activities, my 2yo & 6yo love going there
Justin Slaughter
This was an amazing museum and much bigger than I anticipated! My 8-year old son really enjoyed it, especially the Lego area.
Martha Varner
We've had a blast before but, right now a lot of the more fun exhibits are closed. They have the Lego exhibit open where kids are running around digging through all the blocks at all the different stations but they can't open the Dino dig? Unless you have very little children (under 8) there just isn't a lot to keep them interested... and my two girls are huge science geeks and are usually easy to please. They even got bored with with lego.
Jeffrey Toro
I had never been, a friend suggested we go together and it was a blast! From meeting Vulcan at the front to seeing the Stingray in the basement and all the way up to the projectors on the top floor this place was so much fun! Exhibits for all ages but this place is VERY well suited for children.
greg van ausdall
Top notch science exhibits an abundance of interactable exhibits to use and see. Bonus was all the aquarium section an you can also pet Sting Ray's! An. IMAX theater too. So much to see for young and old alike. If you are in the area must stop by you won't regret it.
Brad Moffett
Last visited this science center a couple of years ago and found it had decline significantly in term of maintenance of the exhibits. This is still a wonderful place to take kids and to enjoy yourself. But the water section was barely functional among others. I partially blame the pandemic which has clearly affected places like the center that depend upon visitors. Still, there is a lot of deferred repairs that has me concerned over the long term viability of the center. It remains a must see venue if you have children, but I hope they bring there effort back to prior levels.
Holly Seaton
Awesome time with the kids! We had a freakin blast!!😆 …
Aaron Osterbrock
What a wonderful place for kids! Our 4 kids are all 6 & under so they all love the Itty Bitty Magic City. Also, we are ASTC members, which allowed us free entrance. Highly recommend this and becoming a member of an ASTC museum.
Lauren Blackburn
So so so worth buying the membership. We are gonna be here all the time. Itty Bitty Magic City is precious!
Rebecca Mainville
This is worth the money!! We all loved the whole experience!!
Jaideep Honavar
Our kid is in a week long Day Camp there and is thoroughly enjoying it. McWane Science center has always been an awesome place for Children and Adults of all ages for a source of Infotainment. The staff is very attentive and makes sure you have a great experience
James Redden
This place was AWESOME! We took my 13 year old and his brother there for his birthday and we had a blast! The staff was friendly and there was plenty to do, four floors of different things to do. My only complaint is the food and drink pricing. Even the vending machines were charging $3 for a 20oz soda. If you go, bring your own drinks and snacks. Other than that, I cannot recommend this place enough if you have kids of any age. Even as adults, my wife and I had a great time. Loved it!
Michelle Thrasher
One of my family’s favorite places to visit. I love that the exhibits on the 3rd floor change, it keeps visits interesting.
Deshawn Baker
Took the family here and had a blast ! Would recommend grabbing a bite downtown before you go . The IMAX was good and the kids enjoyed their selves. So Thank You!!
Nina Balmer
Great fun for children of all ages.
Carlee Laurent
Love love love this place!! I cannot wait to come back and purchase a membership
Jacob Luna
A great museum for both adults and kids. Many of the exhibits look like they're from the 90s, but the science behind them is still relevant and applied in a fun, interactive way. Definitely worth visiting for an hour or two!
Some of the interactives, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exhibit and anything related to video games, are just out of touch with the times.
The aquariums are very well maintained and have a variety of beautiful fish. There is a massive moray eel that is incredible. McWane also have a touch-tank with stingrays and some other fish, too!
Angela Burton
Love the sharks and sting rays. I have taken my kids here a million times, really want some new stuff
Shaybellene M
I was in town. I originally wanted to visit a civil rights museum. Unfortunately they were closed. McWane's came up in a lot of suggestions. I do love science and the price was great. I spent about 2 and half hours total. I visited all the floors. I don't know if i had a favorite. I enjoyed interacting with all the exhibits. They have signs by the different items so you can see what they do, how to make it work, how it is suppose to happen, and what causes this. It's educational and really fun. I went by myself and enjoyed it. I didn't do the Imax theater so can't speak on that. Even the gift shop wasn't expensive or over priced like most places. If you find yourself in Birmingham with a couple hours to kill this is a great stop.
Tonia Mcpherson
It's a very exciting place to visit and lot's to do.
Justin Rittenhouse
We stopped on our way north from Florida to meet some friends that live in the area, and they suggested this as an activity for all the kids. Their kids are older, while ours are younger, but both families had a great time. Our friends have been here multiple times, so they knew what to expect, but still seemed to really enjoy themselves. Meanwhile, our kids are both in the "five and under" category, so they got into the space for younger kids. It was awesome. The only problem was we weren't prepared for wet kids, so we couldn't let them fully enjoy the space. They still had a blast, though. They also really enjoyed all the hands-on experiments, even if many of those were well beyond their understanding at five and two.
The kids also loved the lower level aquarium. They particularly enjoyed the rays.
And then we found the model trains. I'm fairly sure we spent an entire hour just looking at all the scenes in the various displays.
The older one has repeatedly asked to go back.
Tara Gustin
Definitely worth the money for a seasonal membership. There were displays here and there that were not working and a couple closed from the COVID, but the kids didn't care. Petting the stingrays was a plus for the kids, they kept coming up like they liked the human interaction, was nice to know they aren't miserable.
Susanna Lopez
We went here with my daughter school and had a great time
Jessica Fields
This place is so much fun! I have been on two field trips so far, but would love to go more. It has so much to do. Also, the IMAX is amazing!
Audrey Quinn
The kids had a ball and some new things as well
I just wish the cafeteria would stay open longer.
Madtrucker
Great place to bring your kids.
Patricia C.I.O.
Very good museum! Specially the first floor with all the interactive and challenging machines!! On the basement there are the fish and we get to touch the horn shark and manta ray!! Me and the hubby were feeling like children again!! It was very fun :)
Gary The Snail
Really fun place for kids for most of the place, but as a college student I found it very enjoyable. The first floor is a lot like WonderWorks in Pidgeon Forge. The basement is a small, but nice aquarium. The second floor is a zoology slash paleontology exhibit. The third floor had a lego build area, and some more physics things to mess with like the stuff on the first floor. My favorite part about the whole place was that there was real dinosaur bones on the second floor. Along with very international videos from a real paleontologist to talk about them. There is also a IMAX in the lobby. I did not get experience the IMAX, but you cant really go wrong with that. Overall a very great experience.
Jamie Nevarez
We had a great time. My daughter is 9 and there were a lot of fun things for her to enjoy. Several stations were either not working or closed due to Covid. I would still recommend, but am excited to go again once everything is back open.
hannah westphall
what. a. smorgasbord.
after visiting this 4 level amazing science museum with so much wonderful stuff for kids (and grownups) of all ages it makes it really difficult to go back to my city’s science museum in nashville, knowing how cool it *could* be, but just woefully falls short. this place is amazing. seriously. it’s so much fun.
pro tip: if you have a science museum membership in your town, check to see if it is part of the reciprocal ticket program and get in for free.
Ben Thomas
A great place for the entire family. We had a ball...
Rj
Been coming here for many years. Great place for kids to burn off energy while they learn. Great events too.
Misty Yager
We had a blast. They had elevators for the people that couldn't use the stairs. The kids had a blast
Tracy McClure
Great place! Renewed our grandparents membership.
Ronald Miller
This is a great facility to take your kids and expand their minds
Steven Moore
This is a really interesting, and interactive experience. My kids have loved this place since it opened. Membership is the best deal, easily pays for itself in two visits. With membership you can visit other museums in other states also. Very nice benefit. Membership also gets you free parking, normally $5.00.
Dimika Bozeman
The adventure was super fun as always! And I advise anyone that is in the Birmingham area to go and check it out. Your kids will love the different floors of fun. And for the little ones that are kindergarten age in younger they have the coolest little play City. My son wanted to spend most of his time there but he had to share time with his older sisters. As I said before I recommend this place I know all of you would love it it's a lot of fun. And those of you that have science center memberships you're able to get in either free or for discount depending on the membership you have.
Bean and Bugs Mom
Always a 5 Gold Star review, anytime we visit! Love the museum, the activities, & demonstrations! Lots of family fun!
Pamela Rabiola
We were there with our 20 month old grandson and although we had a great time, there were a lot of activities that were unavailable due to COVID.
Also, since we were there just basically as "observers" (his parents were with us) I feel having to pay for a full price ticket was quite ridiculous.
We still had a wonderful time being with him!
MsAlabama 205
We love the McWane Science Center!!! So much for kids and even adults to do!!!
Antonio Domingo Rodriguez Martin
Amazing place to learn and have a good family time
The Wilder Lives
We had a blast. Our 2-year old and 4-year old absolutely loved it. There was so much for both of them to do, and even my husband and I were running around like big children. The water world in the itty bitty magic city section was the kids favorite part, where as we adults enjoyed all the interactive exhibits on the main floor. You can't go wrong with fun and educational, and this is by far one of the best science centers we have visited! Just wish the bike didn't close 2 hours before the center did, because we put it off thinking we would have time before we left.
Justin Cruz
This was an amazing place to take my kids. The slide had to be the most intersting. Ive been to many science centers and a random slide was not in the cards! Lots of interactive displays on hand, a great and friendly staff. Parking was easy and plentiful. Fun for both kids and adults who were having just as much fun! Great space to move around no crowding. They have noise sensitivity areas for special needs children which was a plus for my son. All in all a wonderful place that i see multiple visits in the future!
Christy Langley
We had a great time, the whole family from the little kids to the big kids had lots of fun!
Eris Steverson
Our boys loved all the hands on activities. Great way to spend a Saturday!
Kevin Taylor
Great place to bring kids. After Covid they have had to limit several attractions but most of it it open. Older kids (5 and older) might understand more but they have things for the younger kids too. Also a good place for science loving adults.
Nick C.
I brought my 4 year old and 2 year old there. They loved it, due to time constraints, were only spent two hours there, and we didn't quite see or play with everything we wanted to. I think three hours would be a reasonable amount of time to explore (assuming your kids are about as young and curious as mine). Most everything is 'hands-on', and I myself enjoyed the experience.
John K
This is a great place for young kids to about 12 years old. There is a huge variety of activities to do with all types of science. The shark petting and stingray petting zoo exhibit was very cool! Every floor has things that everybody will enjoy. The staff is very friendly. The price may be a little steep but our kids thoroughly enjoyed it
Orlando Davis
You can never go wrong going to this place! Kids LOVE IT!
Hannah Filgo
The only part that was even worth going to was the itty bitty room. When we went 8 year olds were running over my one year old and none of the parents were really watching their kids.
Bruce Blackmon
Grandchildren had a great time exploring the displays and exhibits they were tired thankfully
TheFishmanLLC
One of the original cornerstones in the Downtown Birmingham Revitalization process, an excellent Science Center with a little bit of everything for the curious minds of All ages!
Gene Garza
Coolest place in Birmingham for kids and families! We love this place! There are all sorts of things to interact with, play on, and build with - all educational in some way or another. There is a small aquarium section that has a shark & ray petting tank. 3rd floor gets exhibits that are swapped out from time to time. Itty Bitty Magic City has stuff for all young kids, from toy trains and a play grocery/kitchen area, to a fire truck with lights and sounds, to a large climbing play set with a slide and padded climbing areas. It's a great place to let them get some energy out and encourage creativity and imagination. The IMAX dome theater is pretty awesome, too. They'll show educational stuff and occasional big feature films, as well.
Jessica Sabouh
My family loves it here! We became members so we can go anytime and it is more than worth it. We love how they change some of the exhibits every few months so we get to see new things and also really love the "Itty Bitty Magic City" for ages 5 and under. A great place for the while family!
Rusty Humphries
Great place for the kids to play and actually learn something!
Jodi Johnson
We have so much fun every time we visit. My daughter and son absolutely love science, and the Mcwane Center has a lot to do with that!
Meagan Yeager
Always a super delight. Staff and attraction were amazing, like always. Just wished the 2yr old didn't get fussy so we could've stayed longer
Barry Gillott
Fun for kids ...... small ones and big ones
Vellera Cole
My grandchildren and husband had a wonderful time highly recommend.
Meghan Moore
What a wonderful learning environment! We had a lot of fun. My son loves science especially dinosaurs and they had a while floor about dinosaurs. They were many interactive things to do. Make sure you plan to spend most of your day here if you love science like my son does. He refused to be rushed through the center. The staff was amazing too. They went above and beyond to help my 95 year old grandmother as well as give us information before we arrived and even got us in touch with their amazing scientist which can open doors for my son in the future when he's a little older. We will be returning.
Misty Price
Great place for kids to run around, play, & learn. Some exhibits need to be updated or replaced. The science program/class could be swapped out a little. We've seen the same "show" 3 times now. The overnight adventures are a lot of fun. The Harry Potter night was great! My son really enjoyed it.
Kerry Gould
Always a fun place!! The kids love it.
Danielle Lynne
I absolutely loved my trip to McWane Science center!
Kelli Smith
Always so much fun! I do hate that they don’t have the slide anymore. But we still love going.
Moth Man
Very fun for kids of all ages, even those not young enough to understand most science. Has constantly changing exhibits, as well as some that are permanent. Whether an exhibit is there always, or for a short period of time, all exhibits are without a doubt very fun, and understandable by kids of all ages. The IMAX theater Is colossal, and has one of the greatest screens I’ve ever seen in a movie theater. It is over all very clean, and also very fun for everybody!
Jason Foote
Wow! What a fun place for my kids! We were just visiting Birmingham for the day and my four year-old and two-year-old absolutely loved this science Center. so did I to be quite honest! There's something here for everyone. The toddler area was a blast for them and had so many different activities for them to get their hands on and enjoy. They loved the dinosaur bones and birds on display that you can push a button to hear the bird sounds. They also had a great time with the huge multicolored display that you can put your hand or face or body into and make an impression. I'm not sure how else to describe that thing but it's pretty cool.
I wish we had this science center where we live back in Memphis! Would love to go again
Charlie Griffin
Great place to bring kids cause there's a ton of stuff for them to do and see. Makes science interesting and fun. Also has an imax dome theater which is an experience on its own if you've never been to one.
Michelle Abel
Food court is closed! I mean, I get wanting to be safe but masks aren't required so I don't see how closing it helps. I didnt see that anywhere on the website, so I ended up with some hungry kids and had to leave earlier than intended. Also, like another review said, Dino dig is closed as well as the slides in Itty bitty magic city. It was still fun there but the safety policies seem a bit confusing.
Pam Rissler
We had the best time. There is something for everyone. Two grand babies (1&3) enjoyed itty bitty and the grown ups found tons to do as well.
ONLY disappointment was the cost of a bottle of water....fountains closed due to covid no food or drinks allowed ....then you charge $3.50 for water.
Stephanie McFarland
So much fun so unexpected! I was worried our large age range group 4-14 wasn't going to have a lot of interest across the board. However, oldest to youngest was so happy and had so much fun I was dragging them out at closing! The people who work/volunteer there are superior people and make everything so very pleasant!
Chris Manning
We are members and always enjoy stopping in to see what is new.
W.D. Carrington (QDABOOGIE)
I'm such a big kid! I enjoyed myself immensely. It was so engaging, educational and interactive that it took me over 2 hrs. to see and do practically everything. Highly recommended.
Bill Regan (Sailing Wanderer)
Took our toddler here when we spent a few nights in Birmingham on the run from Hurricane Irma in Florida. What a gem this is! I would have been happy enough to go there as an adult, but was great to see the wonder and fun my daughter was having in all the sections.
She especially enjoyed the small aquarium, bubble room, and indoor small kids area. Would frequent if we lived close.
Moira Butler
McWane is seriously our happy place! The exhibits are always great and the staff are the best!
Tabby Wunschel
Awesome and we all had fun 😊, but we shouldn't have to pay to park it's already expensive for everything inside. …
Holly Kirkpatrick
We have a year pass and so worth it .
John Seed
Great place! Tickets and annual pass are very reasonably priced, taking the many hours of fun that you could get by yourself or with family into consideration. My family and kids love this! In fact we recently purchased a pass for spring break and the summer so that we could go whenever!
BamaNett Dunn
We had a absolutely great time on our field trip.
Bevan Shores
Visited with 12 and 13 year old. Both found plenty of activities to participate in. The imax theater was fun. Center was clean and well maintained. We spent 4 hours in the center on a Sunday afternoon. It was not overly crowded, we were able to participate in all activities the group was interested in. Happy to see a family bathroom, entire area was handicap accessible with elevators and spacing between events. We will return.
Adam Thomas
If you have kids, this is a place for you. Took nieces and nephews here while visiting from out of state, and they had a blast. A lot of interactive obstacles both kids and Adults can enjoy. The bad parts were the parking deck and how the city looks a little sketch around the area.
Venus Smith
We had a great time for my daughters 20th birthday. En route, I caught a flat tire. We had purchased tickets for the 1pm movie. I called and spoke with Rick and he said they could let us into another movie time. Upon arriving, I spoke with a lady who looked like security in the main lobby and explained to her the situation and she told me ensuring would be fine and we could do the 215 movie. Toeing the exhibits was pleasurable. We were kind of disappointed that we couldn't touch the stingrays (although understandable) and the water towers weren't going downstairs. Overall we had a wonderful time after not visiting for about 12 years.
Charles W Basden
The best reviewers should really be children or parents. I went with my daughter and her children. The kids loved it. I thought it was a good venue overall and with some good edutainment ideas. However, it is in need of some TLC which is often the case of interactive museum-like places. The prices were a bit high in light of the condition of the displays.
Missy Rogers
I love this place and so does my son! There are so many activities to see and do. The staff are friendly and helpful and besides that, it totally rocks since Science is my thing. I'm an adult and I have fun at this amazing place. We hope to see you again soon but hopefully, next time, it will be with his classmates and teachers. It's an educational experience that everyone needs participate in. If you love Science, I highly recommend the McWane Center.
Gene Brooks
A great place in downtown Birmingham to learn and play. We loved the trains on the third floor and the dinosaurs and animals on the second. Our smallest kids loved the play area designed for them. Good security and fine people, but when it gets time to go, you better be ready! They want to go home and move you out of there!
Art Of Valor
Love this place! So many exhibits for children and adults. I highly recommend taking your children here. A whole lot of fun and also a good educational experience! Friendly and welcoming staff, nice facilities and just so many cool things to see. If you have a profound interest in science, you'll fall in love with this place. Even if you're not so crazy about science, you probably will be before you leave this place! Five stars just isn't enough.
Sara Raymond
Absolutely love this place! My whole family had a blast, we were there for almost 5 hours and there was so much interesting activities, we will definitely be back!
Satira Labib
Nice science museum in downtown Birmingham. My 4 and 6 year old enjoyed there time here (1.5 hours needed). First floor is physics/machines, lower floor has a touch tank for rays and a few fish tanks, 2nd floor has a few dino skeletons, 3rd floor has some Lego activities and artistic science exhibits. Pretty small if you are coming from big city but still nice. Our local museum in NC participates in ASTC which this museum is a part of so our entire family got in free. Overall great experience.
AliciaRæ
Needs to be dusted. People have allergies, LOTS of dust on EVERY exhibit.
Elizabeth B.
Update: I took a star off because quite a few exhibits were broken or missing pieces. They need to keep things in good repair with hundreds of kids playing daily. If not this place will go downhill fast.
Love this place. I also love that there is a special area for toddlers. My boys could spend the whole day in that area alone.
Hannah George
We went with 4 adults and 6 kids on a cold and rainy Saturday. Even though it was busy, there were a TON of activities!! I suggest the lightning show, but also exploring every single level. We had kids ranging from 8 months to 45 years old, and all of them LOVED it!! Plenty of interaction, things for big and small kids, and places to sit and chill.
Hammer Man
Definitely a fun place to take your kids, or even the whole family! I like how they have floors that have constantly changing exhibits! Some of them are really fun! I've never come across a bat exhibit, I will definitely say that. Thank you guys for what you do!
KAREN SAXON
Had our 9 year olds party here. Brian and his team made it special. Thank you for a fun Saturday.
Adam Wilson
Awesome Kids Attraction! They have multiple floors and several thousand square feet of kids activities and interactive science displays. Kids and adults both play together, and will take hours to get through. They have attractions for all ages not just school agreed children. If you have a blank afternoon and energetic kids this is the place to go! They also offer food, snacks, and an I Max theatre you can access with a combo ticket purchase.
Ashley Duncan
Wonderful place for kids or adults. Really makes learning so much fun. Something for everyone.
XxspazzattacxX
I really wish there was more to do at the McWane center. I've been twice and I think I was able to experience everything they have there within an hour it can be fun at times but it's mostly for kids I do wish they had more things to do like their physics area. During covet you aren't allowed to touch their stingrays or small harmless sharks which is kind of a bummer especially for the kids. I would rarely recommend this to people I haven't been to the IMAX but I expect that to be actually really good.
Lara Polk
Awesome!! I really enjoyed meeting up with my grandson for a field trip. he had the best time of his life and I really enjoyed watching him. This is a great place for all ages even the old ones like us.
Marie
Would recommend to any with children, very fun and educational at the same time. Enough activities to keep the children interested in the exhibits.
Ivory Kangah
Nice place to bring visitors....with kids 15 and under. Very interactive., educational and fun
Emmanuel Baako
Really fun museum for kids and parents alike. Had a great time there. Expect to spend at least 4 hours checking out everything. The movies are great and inexpensive for a family experience. There is food on site, you can get pizzas and sandwiches. The exhibits are very interactive as well so expect to be able to do a lot of activities with your young ones. Highly recommend and visit here on a rainy day or to get out of the Sun and enjoy some fun family activity.
Jenzerz Stacy
Second time being here. Once before Covid-19 once after. Absolutely loved it, but noticed a few of the bird recording buttons on the dinosaur floor needed to be fixed. Kids still had a wonderful time.
Melanie Lucus
The kids love this place. Some of the exhibits don't work, but enough do keep them entertained. More interactive than several other science museums I have visited. It's a little pricey unless you have a membership. It is $5 to park. I go once a year in the summer with my niece and nephew.
Christopher Weaver
We've had better experiences than as of late. Enjoy taking my kid to Itty Bitty Magic City , but no fan of paying the regular price when half the stuff in there is broken or out of order. Plus this lego experience they currently have ...I took my child up to an empty 3rd floor with a bunch of tables with a few lego pieces in the middle of each one. Literally not even Mcwane staff members were up there....definitely not worth the price of admission and parking. We won't be going back anytime soon
Amber Byrd
Very handicap friendly! Very hands on! There is something for everybody at every age and of all interests. Even the adults can learn something new while bonding with their kids. It's reasonably priced. Once your in you have access to the whole museum with the exception of the theater. Worth the trip and great air conditioned activity for the whole family!
David H
Took the Family, price was fair and the kids (12 & 2 yo) had a good time and learned a little through play. Would recommend a visit check the centers website for special events. Parking Deck is tight so large trucks or long vehicles may want to find street parking to avoid the tight squeeze. Family will be returning and may need to get a season pass.
Ms. L H.
Spring break was my first time attending here. We spent the entire day here and returned the following day. They do accept military discount which helped. My 5 year daughter loves this place. There's a lot to do here for children. There are 3 floors od fun. My daughter especially loves the kitchen area. I would definitely recommend this place to parents.
Neal Kendrick
We were pleasantly surprised at the variety and depth of the exhibits and activities. All three of my kids (ages 9, 7, 5) loved it. Give yourself at least 3 hours, but 4 would be better. There are decent choices for food if needed.
Amanda Savage
My kids love going. They have some exhibits they keep around and some that change up so you have a slightly different experience each time you go. Great family fun. The shark pool is our favorite part to visit.
Paul (Paulie)
I went with my girlfriend and we still had a blast. The dinosaur section is great and very informative! We tried as much things as we could on the ground floor but it is the most chaotic (the little kids' favorite floor) so we couldn't try everything out. The employees are very hardworking and eager to help. The only reason why I give it four stars and not five is because many displays were not working correctly. I understand that it is hard to maintain the area since crazy kids will try to mess everything up to the best of their abilities but even the basic push the button for a video displays were not working at all.
Phalecia Young (leciathegunner64)
Some of the exhibits were closed and I miss the slide that they used to have. Overall great experience for all ages. Definitely worth the money.
Taylor Madison
Worth the money! A great place for kids and adults. So much to do and learn. Recommend. Great experience gift for all ages! Make sure to get there close to when they open because you will have something to do/explore all the way until they close.
Hank West
I havent been here since I was really little until my girlfriend and I went there for a date recently. It is a lot of fun and a good price for all the neat science demonstrations available to interact with. While it is more kid orientated, I think even most adults will have a good bit of fun here.
Brenna Q
The big slide was closed when we went, so that was a bummer. Otherwise the kids loved it! Their favorite part was the Itty Bitty City. I wish older kids were allowed. Both of my girls were allowed in because my youngest is in Kindergarten... my 10 year old daughter had a blast in there!! She LOVED the Vet Clinic (she wants to be a vet when she is older)
Joshua Armstrong
Always a great experience for the kids, learning and fun great combo.
Heather Alford
We went here for my daughter's field trip and on most I feel like my money wasn't well spent, however this was worth every penny of the admission price. The IMAX was one of the largest I've ever been to, and there are four floors (1-3 and the basement) of learning and activity centers. We were here for three hours and didn't even get to enjoy half of what it had to offer. I'm planning to take the whole family for this. I liked that the activities weren't only geared toward littles but also the older kids can enjoy them as well.
Sabrina burks
It was amazing my toddler and my 7 month old loved it. The itty bitty magic city is great for kids. We loved it too. Great for all ages even the adults. You even get to touch the sharks. They have everything from a little aquarium to a science show. Can't wait to go again. I would suggest eating before going or when you first get there bc the food court closes early and they don't stay stocked, most are self serve except Subway.
Matt F
Can entertain your kids for hours here
Jessica Saylor
My family has been going to McWane for about 3 years and since my child was a baby and we love it. It's such a great place to take your kids to play and learn all kinds of things from blowing bubbles to petting sharks! My child always had a great time and we look forward to going back. Since our child is still under the age of 5 we love taking her to Itty Bitty Magic City where kids get to be kids and learn and play with so many different things like being a chef or firefighter, but she really loves the water area the best. It's a great place and we're so glad Birmingham has it.
Marianne Dacey
Always a fun place to take my kids!
Beverly Sartin
Great time for kids. My 4 year old cried when we had to go. That means she had a fabulous time.
Rachael E
So much fun! Good for all ages though it definitely leans towards the younger children. I took my 13 year old and there was plenty of interest for the both of us. Plus right across the street is an international food hall with some amazing options. Walking distance to lots of things in downtown Birmingham.
Megan Gunter
Ity Bity Magic city is fantastic for my toddler. So hands on and so much variety. Kiddo has a blast and I got to sit back and relax.
Joe Eveland
My family and I love spending the day here. Majority of the displays are interactive encouraging young ones (and some older ones) to learn new things. The McWane Center gave my son the spark to learn about science and now it's all he's interested in. I highly recommend a family day here. Grab lunch in the food court or look for one of the many great local restaurants very close by.
Carson Reddish
Really fun but pictures on the website where not really true they showed stuff that wasn't even there
Paola Romero
Awesome for children under 5 as well.
Anna Lopez
Loved this place! My 1 year old had a ball. The imax was incredible, and all the restrooms were so clean. Absolutely amazing family day ❤ highly recommend
Eric Tillman
Wow! This place blew my mind. My kids and I spent 4 hours in this place and I'm not sure we did everything. We watched a film at the IMAX theatre there and it was amazing. The amount of things that they have to get kids and adults interested in science was impressive. They have a bionic area where you can learn about how science is helping people with disability to get back to somewhat of a normal life. The museum had an area about wildlife and dinosaurs. There's a place in the museum you can lay on a bed of nails. How cool is that? There is a room designed especially for younger children and while we didn't go in, it looked nice. I can't say enough good things about this place but I can tell you that it was worth every penny!
Cynthia Austin
I was Very Pleased with the way I Was Welcomed. The Front Desk person was very Helpful and was very attentive to my reason for today's visit. I was there to leave Flyers from Childcare Resources Head Start Prgram. She Allowed me to leave our information 💁♀️. Thanks So Much!!!!!! …
Clarissa Shelnutt
We love going and seeing all the different things
A A
We had a really nice time at the McWane Science Center. We went on a Sunday after noon with the whole family (mom, dad, and two daughters 11 and 16). We all enjoyed the interactive exhibits and had fun exploring and learning together. We spent about 2 hours inside before visit the gift shop and making our exit. Probably not something to do too often but if you’re looking for a family friendly activity and have never visited would be worth checking it out!
Dage Andrews
The whole family had fun! The kids really had fun playing and learning.
David Chalk
An excellent experience for young children, our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter particularly liked the experience they set up for the six and under children. Parking in downtown Birmingham for only $5. Safe, convenient, and a good time. Military and their families get in free this summer! Highly recommend.
Sheila Hadden
It can be a little difficult to find the way around because there are so many exhibits and so little signage. Went with a group of Pre-K through K. The organized events (classroom activities) were chaotic, but the children seemed to enjoy it. The interactive exhibits are definitely fun for the kids.
Jennifer Andrasko
Clean, lots to see on 4 floors. Very sweet employees.
Natasha Spidle
Awesome place to explore the different areas of science. I am a science teacher and I had just as much fun as my scholars! The IMAX theater/movie was so enlightening. Our lunches were perfect. Field trip quite successful. Now I want to bring my own children asap.
Vernon Herron JR
Kids had fun. Lots of stuff to keep them busy. A few attractions closed currently. Some make sense, others don't. They really need to advertise that there are no restaurants open currently. Food options are popcorn from the movie theater or whatever you can find at the vending machines. And not many quick service restaurants nearby that are open on Sunday in downtown Birmingham.
Adel Bing
Hours of fun, could have spent the whole day there. 2 adults, a 3 year old and 6 year old, and we all had a blast! Imax is well worth the extra to get the combo. Very clean, staff was very friendly!!
Megan Cook
This center offers an amazing hands-on experience for the whole family! My 3 year old daughter and almost 1 son had a blast discovering the many exhibits, as well as the adults in our group. The center offers hours of indoor fun (this is key for summer in AL!), while providing learning opportunities. We're a military family, and the McWane Science Center is a Blue Star Museum, allowing us to enter free of cost during the summer months, which is an added bonus for us! We will definitely be returning!
Kelly Franklin
My fiance and I visited this Museum when we are in town for a holiday party. I was afraid that it would be more geared towards children but we were pleasantly surprised. The whole first floor is Interactive and even adults can have fun with it. They even have a touch tank where you can touch sharks and stingrays. The only downside to the museum is that it was a little dirty but when you have a ton of kids running around interacting with the exhibits that is bound to happen.
Jordan Guinn
We had a wonderful time. We originally planned to go see an IMAX movie, but ended up going through the entire facility.
The staff were super courteous and the exhibits were all very neat to see. Two seven year olds were throughly entertained the entire time.
The IMAX dome is something else. Incredible place to watch a movie. I couldn't recommend it more.
Taylor Neal
If you've never been to the McWane center, it's just a great experience. I personally love the basement area, with the aquariums and such -- but they have so much more. And even if you've gone a hundred times, there's a dozen new things to do. It's great fun for the whole family.
Ambrea M
We visited while they had bus loads of kids there on a field trip. It was crazy chaotic and hard to enjoy everything. Our 3 year old was trampled often. We were surprised at how dusty the birds and some of the displays were. We had a good time. It was worth visiting
Adam Hinely
Excellent place for curious kids and adults alike. Today was the first time I've been since the pandemic and it was great. I don't know about other days, but the crowd was very light n this Sunday.
Susan Hill
So happy McWane is back open after the pandemic! This place is amazing- everyone has their favorite exhibit. I love the IMAX theater and films. The kids love the Waterworld and Dinosaurs. Fun around every corner and on-site covered parking. A great day of family fun!
MAC DUNLAP
great place as always. MAVERICK though is NOT formatted for IMAX. they just stretch it to fit the dome width
Hector Alvarado
Great place for family's friends kids and everybody
Robert Rena
I have taken my kids to a few museums of science and science centers between Boston and Florida. this one by far is our favorite, great pricing, parking and activities for the chidren, i have a 2 year old and a 12 year old. they both had a lot of fun and got to learn some cool stuff, My wife and i also had fun. It was hard to concentrate on the kids with so much interesting stuff all around, Great job guys. hope to be back soon
Tristan B.
Definitely go. There are three floors. The first two floors tend to be the same, but nonetheless it's always exciting to go, no matter how old you are. They change the third floor every month or so. It's very educational if you decide to read the descriptions, but if you're not a reader then it's a thrill regardless.
If you have a family and decide you want to return, I would recommend their membership pass. Gives you free parking and pays for itself in two trips. If you are a solo runner, then it probably wouldn't be worth the investment.
I hope you decide to go and learn all that it has to offer!
Jessaca Martin (JessyJae 228)
We went on Homeschool Day & got a great deal! It was the perfect field trip, except we didn't have to worry about keeping up with buses, or groups, or only doing certain things cause of time limits. We got to enjoy every bit of it, more than once & the kids learned a lot in one day while having so much fun. Highly recommended!!
Chris Brubaker
If you have never been then you don’t know what your missing .. you could spend all day being a big kid and learning things you might not have known.. or you can talk the family and make a day of it
Timothy Flathers
Better-than-average science museum with exhibits outside of the usual staples. Lots of interactivity and a wide range that should offer something for all ages
Nicole S
The new IMAX is phenomenal. This place is great for kids and adults. Fun for all. Love this place. And right now in this pandemic they are doing top notch to keep everyone safe

Awesome place to take the kids!

I'm a science teacher and I loved this place. LOTS of hands-on activities and a great kids' zone. My 3 year old daughter also had a blast. I took videos and pictures to enhance next years' lessons.

Great place for kids. Have been a few times and the kids always have the best time. Lots of different activities and hands on things to do. Love the itty bitty magic city, kids can roam and play and explore all sorts. Love the animals and information to learn about them. Great place to have fun and learn and expand little minds!

Absolutely love this place. We're a family of 7 and decided to go with the family passes. We paid a little over $100 for the whole family to go as much as we want during the year. The shark exhibit is by far our favorite and the fact that they change out the top floor exhibit keeps it fresh. Highly recommend.

Great place to take the kids. Tons of educational toys and exhibits. Itty Bitty Magic city is fun for smaller children. Don't miss the aquatic exhibit downstairs on the basement level. If you're going to go more than twice in a year, it makes sense to get a membership.

I had a wonderful time because it was the first time I had been since right agree it opened. It is a wonderful place to take children one in a while. I was, however, very disappointed with the number of things that were broken. Obviously the management just let's things go as many of the hands on exhibits hasn't been in good working order for quite some time. You would thin with all the money they make it would be in better shape.

This place is always super fun and educational to take kids to. I'm a nanny and I've brought many many kids to play here and will continue to do so. They always love it and I can see their little light bulbs turn on when we go.

Plenty to do, fair price, near parking and food. The McWane Center is a great place for children, especially young children to explore and learn. My daughter LOVES their Kiwanis Club little city play area where she can pretend to be a store clerk, mechanic, firefighter, and short order cook all in a day. It costs me about $50 to park and bring our family of 3 here. Given what all you get it's a reasonable rate I think and I definitely recommend a trip if you've a little one or two.

Great interactive science museum for people of all ages! I highly recommend going to the science workshops/demonstrations that their knowledgeable staff hosts! Jordan and Norman are the best!

Fantastic science museum!! My boys, 8 & 10, absolutely loved visiting here. The first floor has so many hands on activities that they hardly wanted to try the other 2 floors. The 2nd & 3rd floors were not nearly as hands on & exciting, but they still found a few things they enjoyed there. I highly recommend this place for all ages.

This is one of my children's favorite places to visit. Have made several trips here over the years and it's always been worth it. They have several interactive displays and there are loads of scientific excitements for your kids to do. If your kids are into science this place is definately a must.

Awesome place to visit. A must when in Birmingham, especially if you have kids!

So much fun! Tons to do and explore but my kids really loved itty bitty city and the aquarium! We are looking into a membership to go as much as we want.

Overall we had a wonderful time. However, I was disappointed at the cleanliness of the whole place. The bathrooms were not well kept and many of the toys had lots of grim on them. But the kids loved it! And the parents did too!

My girls (ages 3 and 5) loved our visit to the science center! McWane Science Center has so many activities for everyone to enjoy. The activities are engaging, educational, and fun. There are three levels of fun. After going through each center, we were all thoroughly tired...but in a good way. This is a perfect way to spend some time with family doing indoor activities based on science. We will definitely visit the McWane Science center again.

Always love this place. Great fun for kids and adults. A little disappointed that half if 1st floor was closed, but excited to see when it reopens.
