Reviews of Arlington Antebellum Home & Gardens
A beautiful and historic home that predates Birmingham. You start off with a 13 min. video that talks about the various owners, structural changes, and history of the home. It's a self guided tour. The home is filled to the brim with period accurate furnishings, musical instruments, clothing, and brick-a-brac. The separate kitchen and grounds were also great. The staff working on 6/22 were so kind and welcoming!!!
I had such a fantastic time exploring Arlington Antebellum Home and Garden! It’s definitely not the largest or most extravagant estate I’ve been to, but it’s worth seeing if you’re planning a trip to Birmingham or live there.
All the staff I interacted with were phenomenal, and I had such a great time talking to a volunteer gardener when I visited.
Overall, nine out of ten because the location is really bad. It’s in a run down neighborhood, and I didn’t feel super safe once I left the gates.
Note:
-You’ll spend about an hour here including the 20 minute video.
-Tickets are $5 for an adult and $3 for students.
-If you collect postcards they have some for sale that aren’t on display.
Great experience touring Arlington House. The furnishings are very opulent and give a good idea of what life was like back then. The guides and staff were very friendly and helpful.
A must see when touring Birmingham. Learn the history of the Arlington. Toured the property. It is very beautiful with manicured lawns. It is a step back in time and worthy of a visit to " the Julep Shop"! Family friendly event and definitely puts the mentally of Birmingham into perspective.
LOVED this museum! It’s small but full of history and love. The employees are amazing and knowledgeable. The grounds, gardens and house is beautiful!
Beautiful home definitely worth a visit. Go when a docent is available - so much history in one home! Belinda was very knowledgable and kind.
First time here for the luncheon put on by Mrs. Shelia Tyson for A&M and State game classic weekend. The atmosphere was charged, the host was gracious, the food was delicious with DJ bad Butch was popping. I had a great time. Will recommend this facility to family and friends
This is a must see for history lovers. The property has been well taken care of. I was greeted by 2 nice and lovely workers who exhibited great love and appreciation for this property. It costs $5 to get in, but it’s well worth it.
Beautiful Antebellum Home! The building, interior & exterior and history make it a great place to visit! I look forward to returning and doing an investigation in the home! A friend and I got numerous responses using the rem-pod tonight, but we were only able to investigate approx 15 minutes because we were there for another event.
Attended a Southern Girls Mystery Dinner. Totally enjoyed the meal and the entertainment!
This place was awesome!! Came from California but didn't realize they were closed. The staff was so incredibly nice and accommodating that they let us tour it anyways. Definitely recommend coming here and the house itself is just gorgeous
Another of Birminghams treasures! A photographers dream, i stayed for hours photoing everything in sight! Staff was very friendly. It was really like stepping back in time. The grounds are well kept. I have loved in Birmingham all my life and had never been, now I'm sure Ill go back to do more photos! Pretty sure there are some good ghost stories about this place too!
The Arlington House was a very interesting thing to see. I went on a day trip with a group of about 20 on a charter bus. We had pre-arranged our trip so we did not have to wait at all to see it. The house also had an unattached kitchen and a carriage house. There were six acres with lots of gardens. Because we went in December only the kitchen Gardens had a lot in them. And I think we actually ate greens in our lunch there. They had a very good film to watch before entering the house. It went through the history of the house. Then we were escorted into the front hall of the house and our escort left us. I wish she had stayed to answer questions. The rooms were roped off to protect the contents but you could clearly see everything in the room. There were little cards here in there pointing out some of the more interesting items. They had cut out a section of the floor and the adjacent wall and then glassed over the cutouts so we could see how the house was put together. Our tour included a lovely lunch prepared on site and served to us. Since this was a day trip our price was all inclusive and I don't know exactly how much of it was paid to see the house. Be sure to see the kitchen house if you go and find out why the path from the house to the kitchen is called the whistling walk.
I attended an evening Christmas mystery dinner. Arlington was decorated beautifully. It was my first time going to Arlington. It has been well preserved.
Great historic home. Interesting tour. Knowledgeable staff and friendly
Beautiful. Mentioned the contributionds of African American enslaved people including the highly skilled crafts people. Talk to your kids be fore you go and after. The history isn't pretty but the place is a fascinating gem.
Staff very friendly price reasonable for tour of home. Could use some painting and maybe self guided headphones to explain a little definitely a place to visit for a weekend get away and something to do.Just see a lot of possibilities for the place.
I have lived in Birmingham for almost 30 years and have never known Arlington was in our city! I absolutely love History and I took my boys to see this beautiful home. We were very fortunate to have met our Docent Belinda Dennis. She was so informative and honestly was one of the best historians I’ve ever heard. She made our visit special and when we left I truly felt I had stepped back in time and learned more about Birmingham and it’s past. My family and I will definitely be back to enjoy other events at Arlington!
As an african american the antebellum era is often a painful reminder of a bitter past . I feel like for people of color; it's also a testament of how far we've come & how we're growing. It's proof that Dr. Kings dream has become a reality, not just for people of color but for all God's children. We now can sit at the table of brotherhood with love in our hearts & respect for our difference. I received a warm southern hospitality welcome from chef Matthew Murphy & director Toby Richards, I had a great time! I ate good food, picked pecans & herbs. I walked the 6 acres! Amazing experience in the middle of covid. I would encourage anyone to visit. Experience the past of arlington, leave & become part of the dream dr king talked about. Let's uplift & support each other. There's only one family, the human family! ❤️💖🥰😷
Beautiful home . Self guided tour . No staff interaction.
Took the family during spring break. Weather was nice. The home and grounds are wonderfully keep up. The hosts are great! I got a membership to visit again. There are many events throughout the year.
Nice self tour of the house. Interesting facts.
It was interesting I wasn't they are very long but when I was there they had a choir singing on the front steps I don't know if it was a fluke or if they do that on a regular basis but it was nice I only put four stars because I wasn't there very long
I've been wanting to visit the Arlington Plantation for quite awhile and their Christmas event seemed like the perfect time. The entire experience was charming and we felt as though we were stepping back in time. They offered their historical home tours complete with 4 southern belles in hoop skirts and bonnets, cookies and refreshments, and photo opportunities with Santa. The waived admission this weekend and admission was by donation, but the house was decorated top to bottom and we had a great day. Definitely will be back!
Really interesting place to visit. Built in the 1840s it's actually older than Birmingham by about 30 years. It was a plantation back in the day but is now museum run by the city. It sits on 6 acres of well maintained law and gardens. They also host parties there. Worth the five bucks admission, I think it's 3.00 for kids. Worth a look
Very nice walk through history. Enjoyed the conversation with the lady who took care of the garden. It was beautiful!
It was a very nice art exhibit. All different kinds of art. They served finger food and different drinks and wine.
The home is very well decorated. We had an experienced tour guide who was very pleasant.
If only this style of home was still readily available on today's market.
So cool! I was surprised that plantations are so small but it was like stepping back in time. I loved the history of it and it was easy to see that the staff love the property as well.
Neat enough but most of the information came from a video before the self guided tour of the house. I was expecting a bit more out of the tour.
Great historic location. I wish the gardens were presented better. Not a lot to see.
Our work staff had a day away there. The antebellum home was nicely appointed, and I can say that we had what was easily one of the best five meals I have had in the last year. Cornish hen, Johnny cake with a spinach and cream sauce, and creme brulee cheesecake... Very much looking forward to a return trip with a lunch.
I've been here twice, once with a tour guide and once without. The tone of the tour itself is an interesting look into how Southerners like to romanticize our not-so-pretty past and the antebellum way of life. The tour guide was a sweet Southern white lady who euphemistically referred to the black slaves who worked here as "servants" as she described the residents and their lifestyle. Ha. They were definitely enslaved people, not servants in 1845/50.
If you have never been to Arlington for one of their Thursday lunches or Evening dinners, put this on your things to do in Birmingham list. Their in-house chef creates unique three-course meals for each event. The food is delicious, the company delightful, and the staff is dedicated. To top it all off, the price is reasonable and includes a tour of the historic antebellum home. Better all around experience than any other restaurant in the area.
The Arlington Antebellum home and gardens are beautiful! It's quick and self-guided.
We went for the Mardi Gras Murder Mystery hosted by The Southern Ghost Girls. It was so much fun, from the murder mystery to doing an actual paranormal investigation. It was a great night and I had some strange experiences. You should check out a paranormal investigation with The Southern Ghost Girls. They're very knowledgeable and so kind and friendly.
Valentines Day Diner was excellent. Live music from local singer/song writer Jahnah Camille set the mood for all couples in attendance. Chef prepared an amazing 4 course meal. The home, its gardens, the food, the hospitality and the music made for a perfect evening.
Beautiful house and grounds especially in juxtaposition with the surrounding neighborhood. Really stimulates the imagination to see what the area would have been like in the 1800s. Descriptions of the rooms were well written and the grounds looks great even after last year's drought.
Went here for the 107.7 lunch. Lunch was a pimento cheese burger and baked beans. It was okay. The table and table cloths were bottom shelf basic. I have never went to a formal lunch with such limited food selection and basic set up.
Was pretty good. It was a bit empty and couldn't get a close look at a lot so seemed like they had less than they do. Not a lot of details about a lot of the displays but the ones that had info were very interesting. Overall, don't regret going but probably wouldn't be upset had we skipped it.
Took daughters senior pic there so beautiful helpful and friendly staff
Ms Mattie was an AMAZING tour guide with lots of knowledge about the history of Arlington. The house was a must see. But Ms Mattie is a must meet!
Very nice home and grounds and well maintained gardens. The tour is self guided but includes descriptive brochure. Will worthwhile if this sort of thing interests you.
It was a trip to see how the South was for white people.
I am from NYC born 1956.
My parents may have experance the cruelty of a people that stole every thing from Native Amarican and Black people.
The food was good. The tour was hart breaking!
Was great, but didn't get enough time to receive information on the location. Have to go back and get a little bit more.
Went here for a jazz concert, which was awesome! It was outdoors and unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. However, the grounds were well kept and clean.
The Arlington is picturesque and historical land mark in Birmingham. The staff enjoys sharing it's history and introducing guests to the home. Events are held throughout the year providing opportunities and entertainment.
A beautiful Antebellum home from the 1870's that has been beautifully well preserved. The grounds are beautifully sculptured and well kept.
I attended Jazz in the park and was very pleased with the atmosphere. Needed just a bit more lighting as the concert moved into the second phase(8pm-9pm).
Beautiful but in kind of a sketchy part of Birmingham.
Beautiful place, friendly staff, and lots of history. A must see if you like historical places!
I love this old house. People running it are sincere and pleasant. Wonderful piece of history that I enjoy sharing with vistors to Bham.....that being said...flaking paint and rotting wood on the house breaks my heart.
A beautiful antebellum home tucked away in the suburbs of Birmingham Al. A gorgeous home built in the greek revival style complete with furnishings from the post civil war era.
Beautiful historic home. Staff was very friendly and held a lot of wisdom about the history of the property.
I enjoyed visiting here with my family, it was great to see and learn about the history.
Nice place in a rough area of town. Self tour and not a lot to see but if you like history it's worth it.
Take a trip back in time. Loved it!
It's a nice park with nice grass and shade. When had a great time at jazz in the 6 a few Sunday's ago.
There were staff members present throughout our visit that interacted with us and ensured we were having an enjoyable time.
I played there all the time when I was younger , late 1960searly 70s l loved picking pecans.
We had so much fun with the Southern Ghost Girls doing the ghost hunt/paranormal investigation here!
Worth the challenge to find amidst industrial park. $5 admission for self guided tour. Super friendly staff.
I work security so I'm assigned to various posts. I have worked security off and on for over 40 years. I live at 1528 Cooper Hill RD Apt F, Irondale, AL,35210.
Beautifully maintained house and gardens! Friendly staff. Enjoyed today's visit!

Great tour and food! GiGi welcomed us and ensured that everything went smoothly.
Jazz in the park and I like it alot. The only problem was the grass could have been cut.
Attended jazz in the park there, it was very nice scenery for the venue.
First time and it was delightful! The food was delicious and a special atmosphere.
Oldest home in Birmingham. Step back into history!
Nice place to visit. Interesting history.
Last Plantation house of the Birmingham area. Volunteer couldn't tell us anything. We were handed a pamphlet.

A beautiful historic location, lovely meal and enthusiastic staff/presenters made it easy for all of the attendees to revel in our period themed costumes and enjoy playing our parts. I missed the BYOB memo, but a lovely lady at my table shared her wine with me. The ghost tour was interesting and engaging also!
