Reviews of Eubie Blake National Jazz and Cultural Center
This place is a block away from me. Last year, I attended an amazing Kwanzaa event on the fifth day (Nia) hosted by the Tendea Family. My mom, whose birthday falls on the first day of Kwanzaa, came from out of town and enjoyed the entire program. My daughter did as well. Great rental space and museum.
We were here for a sofar concert, and it was awesome. Highly recommend this place, a small, up close and personal venue.
In the late 1960’s due to a lack of attention being given to cultural arts, the Neighborhood Parents Club (NPC) took on the task of forming an after school arts program. As a direct result of these efforts, the NPC at Baltimore’s Dunbar High School received support for the arts through a demonstration project funded by the Baltimore City Model Cities Agency. The initial grassroots effort, then, evolved into six cultural arts centers around the city.
Model Cites subsequently merged with Baltimore’s Community Action Agency in the mid-seventies to become the Urban Services Agency.
The focus of these centers was performing arts (dance, theater, band, voice, and instrument) and visual arts (painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture). In 1978, a seventh center was opened, establishing Gallery 409 (at 409 N Charles Street) as the Urban Services Agency’s premier cultural arts center.
Simultaneously, conversations were being held with Eubie and Marion Blake in an attempt to bring significant pieces of the Eubie Blake collection to his birth place of Baltimore. Agreements were reached and the title for the original permanent collection was given by Mrs. Blake, to the Maryland Historical Society while a portion of the original collection was housed at Gallery 409. The premier Urban Services gallery was renamed as the Eubie Blake Cultural Arts Center in 1983.
In 1993, a fire destroyed the Gallery 409 facility. Additionally, in 1993, a corporation was formed to support the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center, Inc. As a result, the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center was housed at 34 Market Place at the Brokerage (now the Power Plant Live!). The pieces of the permanent Eubie Blake collection were taken into care by the Maryland Historical Society.
In 2000, the city of Baltimore transferred title of an historical property at 847 N. Howard Street to the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center. Initial renovations were started using public city, state, and private funding. Full scale efforts continue to prepare the building to reclaim the Center’s portion of the Blake collection and to once again be the premier locale for cultural arts in Baltimore.
Having come full cycle, the Board, Staff and Community of the Eubie Blake Cultural Center are returning to the original and fundamental vision of those mothers from Dunbar High School and moving beyond by establishing not only programs for young people but also exciting and expansive programs--activities, events and performances--for adults and seniors.
Stopped in here with a friend and learned a lot about Eubie Blake and his impact on Baltimore. Really cool spot to visit if you're exploring Mount Vernon, lots of different items on display, and friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Nice Art exhibition. It was my first time there and im excited to go back for another event in the future
Never been here before tonight. Very nice space. Staff were friendly. The freaking floors as you walk and the front door slamming was a bit of a distraction to the reading I was there to hear. Otherwise very nice. I look forward to attending other events here and learning more about this place.
Such an amazing place to learn about America's music. Beautiful facilities and great staff!
Had a great experience I attended an event as a vendor that they were hosting. Nice place. You definitely can learn a lot about history.
The Eubie just figured prominently in the 28 July 2019 Shops at Antique Row Street Fest, offering vendor space and a music stage. Along with Dear Globe Coffee at 827 N Howard St., a good sized throng of antiques, food, music and coffee aficionados showed up and had a great time.
What a treasure of a place. If you're interested in music this is a place you must visit. They host activities, events and even dance classes there. I was most impressed by the "living room" on the first floor with pictures from Blake's life and work.
Had a wonderful time with my friend doing African dance. Place is nice clean and spacious. I will definitely return to prefect my skills.
Awesome 😎👍🏼 staff was very informative and welcoming. I felt at home. The exhibits definitely awaken my spirits and soul. I left there with great cultural and artistic inspirations. Thank you for great experience! …
Building full of fun events and night life! Check out their events calendar!!
Fascinating little place to see in an under-trafficked part of Baltimore. They host a lot of events but there's a couple small exhibits that make a stop worthwhile even if there's nothing special happening.
Great event the vibe and music was Dope..I just wish they had a better food selection ..and the food was on one floor not involved with the other vendors.. but I enjoyed myself ..Black culture is so dope
Go see "Paintings,Collages and Drawings" by Eugene R. Coles, brilliant works of art by a master.
The venue is very intimate. Great for wedding. The indoor and outside space is great. The parking lot that backs the outdoor space is not ideal for a romantic setting but... it's in the middle of the city.
I love the upstairs dance class area too
Check out their website for events and activities. I have taken (flash mob or dance attack) dance classes here for Batimore Artscape Festival. When they were younger my children where in plays here for their art classes in elementary/middle schools. A family friend hosted a Mother's Day Jazz & Dinner event here a few years backs. And my son goings here for the African Dance classes. Some of the people from this location travel to DC for their African Dance classes and to the park during the warmer whether when my son has time to host his classes.
This facility has many uses including advocacy. So call them up if you are ready to support the Fine Arts, support a humanitarian cause or host your own event. They are usually busy doing something throughout the year. Remember they still have COVID-19 restrictions in place as a precaution. I just realized that it has been over fifteen years since I first started going to this location with my oldest children and I am still going here with my two youngest children. Smiles.
A fabulous venue for the Arts in Baltimore!
All of my experiences have been great. I have been there to see exhibits, shows and a cabaret. Mr Burton, the executive director manages the center extremely well. There is always something exciting and engaging there. It is a must visit on a regular basis.
Love it. Great People. It has a great Gallery that features different Artists. Great space to have any type of events from Birthday Parties to Weddings. It's Wonderful. A great Music Program and home of Muse 360 and Rayn Fall Dance Program.
Walking into the Cultural Arts Center, you are transformed back to the era of Black Baltimore jazz in which Eubie Blake and Noble Sisel reigned supreme. I was there for Kwanzaa celebration hosted by Tendea. Great space to host an event!
An iconic Baltimore events venue as a living tribute to jazz composer, Eubie Blake. This four story historic building consists of full-time art gallery, dance studio, event space and performance spaces for live entertainment. You can catch live music every 1st Friday evening, comedy and live music every 1st Saturday evening. A gem of cultural enrichment in Baltimore.

This was my first time to really just visit the museum and chill. Loved the the local art and culture. Hidden gem for sure.
Nice cozy spot. There is a bunch of events that they do and I believe that you can't rent it out also. It wouldn't be for hundreds of people, but I do think they have an upstairs space as well. Check it out and sign up for the events calendar of you ever go.
Awesome energy and cool people.
Great site for Baltimore arts events & community affairs gathering.only issue is parking..best way to commute is Uber or Lyft..parking is limited & there are other restaurants & lounges in area that have events that will utilize parking availability
The "Be Free Friday" event held on the last Friday of the month is what led me here, and having found it, I'm certain I'll be back. There was so much I didn't get to see, but each floor of the bldg (4 total) had something going on. That said there is a wealth of cultural exploration to be had here...
I went here to help my aunt celebrate her 50 birthday party and the ambience was really nice and it was just enough room for everyone . I’m
Not sure if the food is catered by them for events but it was so delicious
