Reviews of Baltimore Museum of Art
A really nice afternoon, it’s free, and a really diverse selection with excellent periodic new exhibits. Feature exhibits generally have admission fees but deals for teachers, kids and the elderly. There’s a lovely sculpture garden and Gertrude’s is in the museum with great food and drinks. I was $15 for this exhibit and my wife, a teacher, was $5.
Tons of different genres, and a beautiful building all on its own, this is a must-see in Baltimore. It's completely free, and the paid parking there is fairly cheap compared to other downtown parking lots. The layout is a little confusing and weird, but otherwise a wonderful place to visit! Due to the pandemic, we reserved a time slot in advance, and the check in process was very quick and easy. Word to the wise, if you want to eat at their restaurant, definitely make reservations. We did not, and when we tried to go there after our museum tour, they were all booked up. But otherwise, it was a great visit.
We absolutely loved our visit to the Baltimore Art Museum. As out of town visitors, we chose to spend extra to see the Joan Mitchell exhibit and we were very glad we did. Additionally, the Guarding the Art exhibit was a definite highlight. I love that BMA values the contributions of their security guards. If we live locally, we would definitely become members, especially as the museum is free to the community. I wish the Portland Art Museum would follow suit.
Went to the Baltimore Museum of Art to see the Joan Mitchell exhibit (here until August 14, 2022). It was fantastic! My partner and I did an audio tour through our phones.
Admission for students was $5. They ask you when you walk in if you have a reservation (we did not), but when we went on a Saturday morning it wasn’t necessary. Just in case, however, I’d recommend looking into making a reservation.. You really don’t want to miss this exhibit!
I wondered around the exquisite exhibits in awe. What a jewel that it’s free! Parking is paid. 9 bucks not bad! They were having a Joan Mitchell exhibit which my friend enjoyed immensely. Lunch, a book or just photography amusement. the courtyard is perfect.John Waters will have an exhibition here beginning in November 2022.
Loved this museum. There were so many cool things to see here. I would love to come back here again and see some of the sections I didn't have time to see
Great pieces of work in different genres. Well organized layout. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Beautiful bookstore. Superb Matisse collection alone made it worth the trip. Mostly free with a couple of reasonably priced paid exhibitions.
As an art lover, definitely consider this museum as a must see for anyone with a passion in the arts. Thoroughly enjoyed the hours I spent here each time I've visited.
Splendid. I was super happy with Salman Toor exhibit @ Baltimore Museum of Art. This hidden gem museum displays an amazing variety of beautiful Art. I plan to visit again for John waters collection next month. Please don’t forget to have a nice meal at Gertrude’s at the lobby garden. Kiss, Olan
I could spend hours here. There are art pieces from different genres. Being a keen lover and admirer of Art, I feel this is one of the best places to visit in Baltimore.
Art is always beautiful 🤩
Free for visitors 🥰
Lovely experience… even though I didn’t get to explore everything in there 😊
Hadn't visited BMA in many years. Was impressed with the current exhibits (Contemporary Art and especially Guarding the Art - selections made by and with notes on each work by security guards), the layout of the Cone Collection, and the works on the first floor. I had forgotten about the large collection of mosaics from 5th century Turkey. It was chilly and rainy, but the weather didn't stop me from taking a few photos of the sculpture garden.
This is my second time visiting, and it was great. They did a great job enforcing social distancing. The exhibition were great. I will definitely be going back.
Welcoming and relaxing environment, friendly staff, something for everyone. Even the staircase architecture is beautiful:)
Wonderful exhibits. A great experience and way to spend a Sunday.
A spectacular collection, the crown jewel is the Cone Collection, an extensive and vibrant collection of modern art acquired by Claribel and Etta Cone during the height of the Impressionist movement. Over 600 works by Matisse are the centerpiece, and the BMA does a great job of rotating the pieces on display at any given time. Current galleries are limited due to COVID-19, but they also have a fantastic collection of African art, and a lovely sculpture garden anchored by a piece by Alexander Calder.
One hour tour will not cut it, the range of art exhibits from women artists based in Georgia, LA, Houston and in the heart of Baltimore; pieces from local Baltimore up and coming artists too to 13th century European oil paintings. Will be going back. Also requires online reservations.
So awesome be sure to schedule your free trip online before heading out. Such an amazing place and the new installation is just spectacular it's like being in a fabric rainbow. Great way to spend a few hrs.
My first time here. It was a spectacular time.
Beautiful museum with a tremendous amount of history and culture. Will return to see the gardens on the outside. A bit too hot today!
Home to European paintings, Modern art and Artifacts from Oceanic, Asian, African and South American regions. Paid parking lot. Restaurants are nearby.
One of the best places in the beautiful city of Baltimore that you must see
I had a wonderful time, at the BMA, in 2022. The only drawback was that time ran out. The purpose of my visit was primarily to experience Omar Ba's U.S. premier. However, I enjoyed seeing the works of several other artists, at the Legacies of the Great Migration exhibit. I look forward to returning, again.
What a great place. Friendly staff, beautiful painting, sculptures, masks, furniture from the 1700-1800s. They even have an Asian and an African section. Parking is decent, not outstanding but they have a few spots close by. 3 levels and it’s all FREE! Worth a visit for some at some point in your life. Take a date fellas, surprisingly good date for your lady friend. She will be impressed. I’ve posted 460+ photos to my review as well for anyone curious of what they have to offer.
The Baltimore Museum of Art was a quaint but no less beautiful art museum. There were various different artists and styles to appreciate, as well as immersive opportunities for young children. Located on the grounds of Johns Hopkins University, this museum is a great place to take the family.
I appreciate their online reservation system and scheduling to reopen safely! While some exhibits are closed right now, if you’re not too far, the trip will definitely be worth it! Had a ton of interesting exhibits and some that were just fun!
I love going to Museums. I love art and the stories behind the art. Baltimore has alot to offer and the Baltimore Museum of Art is just one of the many great things to see and do.
The museum is beautiful!! I love that it's free and the artwork is beautiful. There are many great works from Monet to michalangelo and the likes. Its fun to walk around and really soak in the art. It's a great place to take the family. There are tons of events happening as well each week.
Grand collection of Matisse and great variety of works
The Museum is really great. Its free to enter and has great art, well displayed. The staff is friendly and helpful. There are a number of temporary exhibitions going on, most of then are free as well. Along with artworks the place also has a lot of uniquely designed furniture, so you can get interior decor ideas too! There is an area for kids where they can do art, all materials provided. You can watch short movies and documentaries too. The Museum shop has some vintage products, rare brands of skincare and food and much more! The sculptor garden just outside is nice too, you can sit there, bring your pet for a walk or just click pictures. The nearby restaurant-Gertrude’s is where you can fine dine. It is a beautifully decorated restaurant.
We ❤️ the BMA! Anytime we have friends or family visiting, it’s a must-see on our Baltimore experiences list. You could spend hours in here admiring the world’s largest collection of Matisse, the highlighting of local artists, or the ancient artifacts. Not to mention, it’s FREE!
This is a beautiful museum. I was very surprised to find there was no admission fee when I arrived. There is a diverse collection of art including tapestry, sculpture, African art, Asian pieces, contemporary, European and American art. It was well laid out. There is a great restaurant and seating is available in the outdoor sculpture garden for dining. Pleasant way to spend the day.
Hands down one of the best museums on the East Coast!
Fantastic museum with great permanent exhibits and rotating special exhibits. On my visit the John Waters special exhibit was presented. Great museum space laid out with large rooms and plenty of space to roam. A nice venue located near John Hopkins University. Museum personnel are very friendly and make sure to visit the bookstore.
A spectacular place to see different objects, artifacts and beautiful artwork. This is a very educational and fun place to spend a few hours.Enjoy your visit, bring the family but be respectful of others. The staff was very kind, informative and very helpful.
Great museum with lots of interesting exhibits! I especially enjoyed their collection of contemporary art. This is a well-maintained and considerably large museum, and admission is free. More interactiveness would have been a nice touch, but other than that, this is a good place to spend an hour or two. I would definitely recommend visiting if you’re looking for something to do in the area.
Love this museum. We hadn't been in a few months, and it looks like a different place in parts. Really cool new exhibits complimenting a strong base collection. I have always loved the Asian and African collections and the Cone collection galleries. Outdoor displays and gardens make for a lovely walk on a warm day. Photos are some of the newer exhibits since my last visit. Highly recommended. Free admission.
Such a amazing place, restaurant is wonderful and the products of the store are unique! About the art, you need to go and see in person, I soent 5 hours but I’d like to spent more time!
I had visited the succession of nature exhibit in December but didn’t get good pictures and decided to go again.
So happy I returned. They had new African American artist and it really was as if I visited a new museum.
The museum was quiet both times I went. The staff is nice at the reception desk. You can tell they enjoy art. I was provided some recommendations of museums to visit when I travel to New York. Museums are free for the most part and I’m always advising me to go explore art!!!
What an amazing and diverse gallery- a complete diamond in the rough. My family and I were totally surprised at seeing this overflowing and varied display of art from renowned international historical and contempory artists, and it's free (apart from a few of the special exhibits)! Definitely check out BMA if you want to stop by a great museum outside the hustle of DC.
Loved the size of this museum. Tons to see without it being so large you cannot see it all. Activities in place for children. Nice gift shop. Easy to find and park.
Beautifully maintain. They have security in almost every area. If you are a lover of art or not you will enjoy the display. With it being so close to uni they are plenty of eating spots, walking paths around. We parked for free 3blocks away.
Incredible destination-worthy museum. It's free, except for special exhibitions, but the permanent gallery is worth revisits alone. Convenient parking for only $7, so we barely got wet in the rain, which are the best days for gorgeous museums. Whether you are into old masters, rennaissance, impressionists, modern, contemporary, ancient African & Asian, today's social justice artists, local legends, etc... Something for everyone!
I always enjoy going here. Very welcoming and knowledgeable staff. The exhibits have changed since I last visit so nice to see new things
Its free! The thing is, only the first floor is open. Don’t have any idea what happed on the 2nd and 3rd floor. But still you can enjoy the place!
The impressionist art was great on the second floor. I'm not a fan of more contemporary pieces. There is a wide variety of artwork for all interests.
Very friendly staffs and so many great art pieces available
Must visit this place
we randomly stopped here during our visit to Baltimore for my lovely girlfriend's birthday. We enjoyed ourselves very much. Especially enjoyed the contemporary section. The staff was very informative, friendly and helpful
Enjoyed the Art in the museum. Loved the exhibits they had on display as well. Would have liked to seen a Basquiat, Keith Haring or Warhol peice in the Museum.
Went with our French class to see the African art exhibit. Wonderful! This museum is a gem, and it's amazing that visitors can go there for free ( except for special exhibits). Makes it more doable for families, for example, who might want to just visit a few gallery areas at a time and don't have to feel obligated to visit the whole museum due to large entrance fee. So much beautiful art and architecture. Don't forget to go out to the sculpture garden!
Great place for seeing art and even though we had a little one and it's such a quiet space, no one made us feel unwelcome because of it. We are at the restaurant on site, which was ok. The gardens are a nice feature outside and we loved the sculptures.
Most of the staff are super nice except this one guy in the American modern art section who is almost following and staring at us all the way just because we have a walking toddler! Wouldn’t mind some sympathy for parents like us which makes us really uncomfortable!
This place is beautiful. Don't take pictures God for it you get caught lol I had a woman follow me around the whole time telling me.i.cpuldnt photograph anything then I talked to the main Desk and was told it was fine just no flash which I hadn't used at all. There is a very kind gentleman there who I assume was a security officer and is very knowledgeable about the art. He even told me about the art challenge they do every year where you basically enter a piece in and there's two prizes to win. I felt in my element there and bought a few beautiful pieces for my home! Probably overpriced for what it was but hey it gave me put happiness to be there.
Loved all the special exhibits, especially the John Waters photography. Nice African Art and Asian Art Collections. Very lovely restaurant, as well, with very good food.
admission is free except for special exhibits. storage lockers are also free and easy to use. Exhibits are definitely interesting.
Baltimore is very lucky to have such an amazing collection from the Cone Sisters. Mattise, Monet, Picasso, Renior.... Among other. No fee to enter but you can donate.
Great museum! Spent most of the day here. I really enjoyed looking at the large Matisse collection. The building itself has such an eclectic design. I highly recommend this museum if you’re in the area.
Really enjoyed the different kinds of art displayed here and the descriptions/background histories. Very educational place, highly recommend.
Great opening night. Culture, Diversity. Really well done. If you are in the DMV or live in vicinity, please support and go see.
Amazing selection!
In our own backyard - who knew! 😮
Manet
Monet
Degas
Picasso
Pollock
O'Keeffe
Matisse
Fantastic music! Great diversity of quality art; well exhibited. Highly recommend a visit…
Great selection of African, Asian, American, European, and modern art. Many pieces by famous artists such as Èlisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Vincent Van Gogh, among others.
Wow we are still amazed by the vast collection of paintings in this museum. We were especially impressed by Omar Ba’s contemporary exhibition.
There are pieces from all types of genres. Being an art lover and admirer of painting, I feel this is one of the best places to visit in Baltimore.
Beautiful collection across a wide range of art. Gertrude's (the cafe on the ground floor) is delightful. Lovely gift shop with many fun things. The museum asks a few covid screening questions when you enter currently. Was not crowded on a Saturday, free admission. Staff are extremely helpful and pleasant, museum is of course spotlessly clean.
Truly one of the best parts of Charles Village and the best museum in Baltimore. Not only is this a FREE museum, but it’s a free museum with a huge, amazing collection. The BMA is a beautiful building aside from the art, and the sculpture garden next door is also beautiful. The BMA features one of the largest Matisse collections in the world, alongside a comprehensive collection featuring everything from ancient art to contemporary exhibits. In addition to the permanent collection, there are always really interesting (and often relevant political/social) special exhibits. Definitely need to stop by here if you’re in Baltimore!!
Love that Baltimore has key museums so that you can chill and expand your knowledge and art. When the Baltimore Art Museum has concerts, very intimate and sound quality is amazing. Haven't tried the food or drinks BUT from the looks on the customers face lets you know you will not be disappointed.
A lovelt collection. It kinda reminds me of the british musuems on a smaller. i love to come here on a rainy day when the crowds are low. sometimes you have the galleries to yourself.
Beautiful museum! So much to see and learn. New exhibits ever so often ‼️
The BMA is always a rewarding experience. The collection covers ancient to contemporary art. The temporary exhibits keep the Museum “fresh”. The decorative collection includes many signature Baltimore craftsmen and styles. There is Asian, African, European art, all in a very accessible format. I almost forgot to mention the incredible Cone Collection which includes many Matisses and his contemporaries....and so much more!
They have a nice collection but there are some photographs on display I would have liked a sign to warn me before I walked around the corner with my daughter. Nudity in a painted form is different and expected at an art museum. Nudity in photos is not for everyone and I just feel like a sign to let us know is a small thing to ask.
I love it! It’s great because it has a perfect size! Also they have paintings by Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, Miró… and it’s free!!!
Cool museum with lots of exhibits. The art was interesting.
We attended a family art class. The kids loved it. We're going back next Sunday. We also visited the African and Asian exhibits. The staff was extremely friendly.
It’s a great gallery with a broad range of art both modern and classic,it’s always relatively quiet which enhances the experience.Theres also a cool sculpture garden
Had a blast with my kids here on Sunday for FREE, arts and crafts. We will definitely be going back, my husband also wants to join in on our next vist.
My only complaint is that much of the building is currently under renovation. It seems like they have multiple wings which are waiting for exhibits.
I really enjoyed the variety. It's not often you get to see a Matisse down the hall from a modern piece of Nigerian art.
I'd say the best exhibit is the George A Lucas collection.
Wonderful museum for all ages. A few notable artworks by Botticelli and Degas. Decent collection of Asian, African, American and European works. Rotating exhibitions and sculpture garden are nice as well. The best part is it's free admission!
Beautiful museum with a lot to see. The locally donated work is great and the contemporary art is interesting. I enjoyed walking through and seeing the different exhibits.
So much to see, such a beautiful museum. Staff are very nice. Check it out dude!
Absolutely gorgeous and the staff is so nice. I do not reccomend bringing very little kids, but over a toddler should be fine!
Fantastic collection and free to boot. Parking is hard to come by but it's in a good area and safe to walk in. There's a restaurant inside that's slightly expensive. Has art from every movement and time period
amazing museum, free , and incredible large collection of many types of arts.
This is a really great museum. Not so large one feels lost, and the exhibitions are interesting and change pretty frequently Brunch is pretty good there too. Well worth the membership.
Really great museum, some of the transitions I thought were a bit od together but overall a great collection of art.
Great Migration exhibit is excellent. Not to miss.
Lots of strange artwork. Not bad per se, just strange.
The only thing I can possibly say is, do not miss this museum. It is one of the best I have ever seen!
Beautiful museum with a diverse collection of artwork including Matisse, Miro, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Warhol and others. Best of all, admission is free.
Lovely museum with a fascinating collection and sculpture garden. Impressive but expensive restaurant too.
Baltimore Museum of Art I went there on an outing with power of Recovery Center I had a nice time looking at all the Arts all the pictures of the old picture pictures from centuries ago I'm at how ancestors
I came primarily to see the Mark Bradford exhibit, but ended up spending a considerable amount of time visiting other areas of this large and very interesting gallery. I was very surprised to see Edgar Degas’ “Little Ballerina” sculpture there as I thought there was only one in the National Gallery of Art. Well, that is the original one in DC, but I learned there are 28 copies. I would love to visit BMA again soon and spend more time.
(I originally wrote this review a couple of years ago, but just made a minor edit.
A charming small museum with a great collection. It was a pleasure to enjoy every piece. The Restaurant is very good.
The Pros: The Baltimore Museum of Art is so lovely, awesome and amazing in every way. It's free to enter and has vast art collections. I appreciated the fact that everyone must wear a mask in the museum. This helped me to feel safe. I really appreciated seeing Joan Mitchell's works of art/exhibition today. I learned so much about her life and her work.
The Cons: I've frequented an inordinate amount of museums across the country, and the world, but I noticed that this museum had "a lot" of museum security guards - like several to a room. I understand the need to be sure that the work of art is protected, but it would be really nice that the guards not be seen walking back and forth so much. When I visit other art museums, it feels like the guards remain in one place and do not obstruct the view of the visitors or seem intrusive. They should simply exist to monitor the work of art, or help a visitor when requested.
My only other disappointment is that I felt light-headed at one point during my visit and wanted to get a small snack or bite to eat. I was not able to find a snack anywhere. I went to Gertrude's and as previously referenced in a prior review, it felt like the employees were racist/arrogant. I was literally, looked down at by the staff as well as ignored instead of greeted when approaching the host stand. I understand that Gertrude's is a separate entity of the museum, but, if other reviewers/visitors are commenting on this topic, why isn't something done to ensure a more equitable restaurant is in the museum, one that respects all races and backgrounds. It appears this issue is the result of not just one employee, but the "culture" of this restaurant - two employees looked at me and partner and went on to ignore our presence.
In light of this, I think at the least, it would be really nice if BMA sold even a small simple snack in the gift shop for times such as these.
Was a great experience and I learned alot. I really enjoyed the interactive exhibits and the exhibition they had a children's art from middle and high school. I will definitely return during the summer months.
Best to Go online to see all “they” offer because they change events pretty frequently. Clean environment
Such a great museum filled with works from all areas of the globe. If you want to see everything, make sure to budget 2 hours for your trip. It's worth the visit.
I love art and have visited this museum. I am a piece of performance art called The Human Garbage Man. I am inspired by abstract surrealism and neogore aesthetics. I want to perform in your museum asap.
We stumbled on this when we had a little time before our flight and were delighted to discover a rich Matisse collection. Pleasant museum, nicely curated, worth it to spend a little time. The gift shop is nice, too, typical museum fare.
Beautiful museum & impressive collection!
Considering that this is a nice museum and admission is free, I give it five stars. I enjoyed the art that was on display. The only thing they need to do to make for a better visitor experience is to improve the map that they provide. I had to ask two different employees to orient me even with the map in hand. Parking is $9 in their parking lot or you can park for 2 hours for just a dollar on the street in front of the museum. When you leave, be sure to visit the sculpture garden which is just on the left as you walk out.
Very interesting place. Clean, nicely laid out. Parking is horrible
The after hours event caterer The H3irloom Food Group at the Sinclair is amazing
a great place to find inspiration, and it’s FREE!!!
Awesome time at the BMA, the John Waters exhibits are outrageous.
Fun exhibits to check out and better yet its free admission! Cafe is great for brunch!
Not huge but good collection. Especially liked the sculpture garden!
Amazing exhibit in the lobby area that epitomizes why I love the BMA
This museum is amazing. Please do yourself a favor and get a membership!
Cory loved the museum. He had a great time! The staff was friendly, and very helpful.
The facility is great, and the exhibits are top notch. I especially liked and highly recommend viewing the Cone collection. Really nice exhibit with a broad range of art and artists. On the negative side, their mask policy is illogical and unnecessary…
The Baltimore Museum of Art is stunning, progressive, and a hidden gem in a city yearning for more access to the arts.
This is a great museum. Like many museums, especially it seems in the former slave states, it is reckoning with the history of its collection much more than museums in the North East (I have not seen any public effort in NYC, except for the Brooklyn and Bronx Museums). What is interesting is that they have engaged the public in the conversation about acquisitions, prices, values of art that may have before taken place behind closed doors. They are showing the public how museums collect and why. Worth a visit.
Asian Art African Art a lot of interesting pictures of different periods.
An amazing collection 💛 must visit place and entry is free. …
Beautiful, vibrant museum. So many imaginative paintings by Matisse. Note that as of now, January 2022, they are still very adamant about proper mask wearing. Be prepared.
Absolutely beautiful. So many amazing works of art. Efficient layout and very informative.
It was very nice a little difficult to navigate but nice! Some of the exhibits we're a bit subjective and difficult to understand.
First, I love that there is free admission. Accessibility matters. Second, the pieces are beautiful. I got a couple of postcards from the gift shop that featured some of the artwork seen in the museum. The only critique I have, and it's possible that I might have missed it, but I would have loved to see more artwork by Black artists. I would definitely visit again. I'm inspired to check out all of the museums we have in Houston.
My visit was very enjoyable. The staff was very professional and friendly. The exhibits and the museum are immersive to the point that you could lose track of time. I will definitely be coming back.
Went to Baltimore Museum of Art for the first time to see the John Waters exhibit. The Museum was very nice and I look forward to a return visit to see the other exhibits.
I am not an art person at all but i wanted to visit this highly rated museum. It was very nice. Very spacious and clean. A good selection of various type of art from paintings to furniture to silver to sculptures. It was enjoyable and spent about 1.5 hours walking around. There is a sculpture garden next the the museum building.
It's been several years since my last visit to this well curated palace of art. Too much for just one visit. Will have to return soon. Thousands of years of culture too much to take in. Cafe and sculpture gardens worth a separate short visit.
Thus family and out of town guest. is a great place.
This museum has a special place in my heart. First of all, general admission is free! There are a bunch of different types of exhibits and the entire focus isn’t just on European paintings, like some museums tend to be. The BMA has a lot of Matisse pieces. The Museum also engaged the community a lot. It’s walking distance from Saint Paul St, which has a bunch of places to eat. And it’s also just really pretty!
You do have to pay for certain special exhibitions, but not seeing those exhibitions won’t ruin your experience.
The gift shop also has a lot of cool knickknacks and niche gifts. I just love the BMA. It’s great to go on the weekend with a small group of friends.
Spectacular FREE museum with a surprisingly deep collection of well known masters (Picasso, Monet, Pollock, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, O'Keefe, Matisse, etc). We are here for COVID times so had to reserve our FREE tickets, paid $9 (no time limit) to park right in front of the museum (lot was almost full at 2PM on a weekday and the ticket dispenser doesn't appear to stop issuing tickets when it is full as people were waiting for spots to open). Staff inquired about current health and whether we had been in contact with anyone having COVID in last 14-days and mandatory masks which everyone was following. We spent a solid 2-hours and walked through every open room/ collection at a moderate pace. Good mix of modern and historical art and nicely laid out and organized. A great collection and an amazing benefit for our city to have such a great museum available for FREE. It is located right beside the campus of Johns Hopkins University, so upon leaving, take a little stroll (20 minutes) up through the college, back through the sculpture garden, and then back to your car.
Awesome free museum with lots to see
Sculpture garden so overlooked. Interesting pieces in a beautiful setting
I took my children here for a few hours. 8 and 6 years old. It was a great experience and they enjoyed the art. We'll be back!
I haven't been to the BMA in a while and decided to visit. The covid protocols were excellent and made me comfortable with having pre set appointments for visits. I notice several new exhibits but wish that more information or docents available for the contemporary wing. I always enjoy a great Saturday with beautiful artwork. Issa vibe!
Always have an enjoyable experience here with the kids. Museum is free, parking at their lot costs money but you could probably find free street parking if you looked hard enough. The collections they have are pretty great, but I wish they had newer installations more often. Last time we went the sculpture garden was closed even though it looked really well kept and vibrant.
Fun activities for the kids and a great experience for the family!
Even though a good portion of the exhibits are closed, it was still a wonderful visit. Plus it's free! All in all, it's the kind of place I look forward to visiting over and over again. There's so much to see and do, all paired with relatively small crowds.
We were dining in Gertrude 's restaurant, located inside the museum. We cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Food preparation, service and atmosphere are all very good. The prices are especially good. Wheelchair access is good. We were able to get a parking space for handicapped, but more spaces are needed.
This is my place!!! I love a good museum. The collections are nice and relative. Sometimes they have events/shows for adults and family Sunday's. Now let's talk about Gertrude's. The owner truly displays Maryland cuisine. It doesn't matter what you order because it's all tasty. I particularly enjoy the Sunday brunch with the jazz trio. Nothing like a nice meal and a stroll through the museum.
The largest collection of Henri Matisse I've ever seen! And contemporary exhibitions are always astonishing too!
Always an entertaining experience to walk through the halls of this museum. Interesting people, too! Collections are worth visiting more than once, special events for members are fun. Recommended: Get a membership! It's affordable and pays off within the first couple of events.
Home to many Matisse paintings and sculptures. I couldn't believe it was free thanks to a generous grant. Incredible building, well maintained and staffed. Lovely outdoor sculpture garden. Didn't have time to dine at Gertrude's, but hoping to next visit.
Was invited to the study room to closely inspect some old photographs. It was a great experience and there was also an exhibition from one of the faculty members of my school there. It's a very clean and nice looking museum with many pieces of art by famous artists. It's great for students and families, not to mention it's free for everyone!
This is a wonderful place to introduce children to art. They showcase a smattering of artwork in each period but what we liked the best for my grandsons was the touchable art. Beautiful gardens too if you need a place to let the kiddos get some air and exercise.
The John Waters exhibit was simply Divine!
My favorite Museum in Baltimore!! Love it!! Everyone should go!! Free and wonderful!!
One of my favorite places. I took my girls here for Free Thursdays years ago and now I get to experience it with my grandchildren Also there was a major local exhibit that honor diversity inclusiveness and a better representation of our social dynamics. Lastly lived the children's art work so many budding new artist.
Joan Mitchell good stuff.
It's a nice museum but not family friendly. My 3 year old was quite well behaved and we were still stalked by the attendants for the majority of our visit. The contemporary wing is really the only place we felt welcome.
I’m not really adding much to say this place is a treasure. But I must mention the sculpture garden is a genuine place of serene beauty
If you are in Baltimore and love art, this is the museum to visit. It's free and it'll take up a good amount of your day to see everything. The staff are very helpful and give awesome suggestions on which exhibits to see. There's something here for everyone to enjoy.
Very nice art museum with representation of world culturez. Very informative
FREE! Great collection kid friendly
Employees are nice and responsible. Animals looked well taken care of. Price for food and water was out of this world. 5 buck for can of water. Aint no one got money for that
We came for the joan mitchell show and stayed to see the rest of the museum. Saw some amazing stuff on the contemporary art wing.
Beautiful art from many periods of history, helpful staff, and great exhibitions.
Gertrude's brunch is fantastic. Service was top notch. Food was delicious. I had the ahhmazing French toast, husband had Tillman island eggs Benedict... perfectly and delicately fried oysters with poached eggs. A stroll through the museum tops off a fabulous brunch
For a free museum, you wouldn't expect a world class collection. But a world class collection this museum has, with the art of many famous artists displayed. The building and setting are lovely as well. This is a great place to being kids to teach them the progression of art throughout history because the size of the museum is manageable and you can see the stylistic innovations as you move from room to room.
Excellent exhibits and really well laid out. The gift shop had some amazing little gifts. I purchased a great bookmark for a friend and a Ruth Bader Ginsberg T shirt and some neat socks for my daughter.
The Asian Art and African Art exhibits were closed, and they were working on the American Art collection when we visited. But the Cone Sister's collection and the European Art collection are worth a visit, since admission is FREE. We went to Gertrude's afterwards for a nice meal on the Sculpture Garden, a pretty setting as the sun went down. We will return to see the other collections as soon as we hear they're open.
It was ok. Going to art museums is just boring to look at in general to me. I only went here because my friend wanted to go here. There was parking from what I seen but you had to pay so I just parked on the street. Some of the artwork was just a bit ridiculous to me but I guess its because I'm not into it much. This is a good thing to do to kill off time though If you have nothing else to do. And it was free to go in but they do have donation bins.
Joan Mitchell exhibit fabulous. Book store unexpectedly great!
Great Museum with different era's art collection. Good place to explore.
Every Sunday (except last Sunday of the month) they have a Free Family Sunday Art workshop for kids & teenagers. Parents- Grandparents are welcome to that workshop. Instructors are very generous & helpful to everyone.
Loved that museum!!!!!
The new installation is epic. I loved the reminder of my childhood in the 70's and 80's
My wife and I were visiting Baltimore and decided to visit BMA. I’ve been there as a child so it was nice to see it grow and change over time. I knew it was a free museum which when I arrived being told I needed to pay $15 threw me off. It wasn’t until I was approached by the coordinator of the special exhibit, the Asian inspired event, did I realize that the museum is still free to the public. Please speak to the woman at the front desk about being a bit more hospitable and more engaging when it comes to answering questions. I enjoyed the exhibit but likely would have paid for it had I known what I was being charged for!
A class A museum worth the price of admission. A number of different exhibits. A wonderful way to spend the day. Dining facilities on site meant we didn't have to leave the site to eat and take a break. Wear comfortable shoes!
Parking is confusing and troublesome. Street parking at meters is available, and they do have museum parking lots but the signs will direct you to past those and into their overflow in the Johns Hopkins university garage. Galleries were only partially open post-covid. I needed my jacket in some galleries but was lightheaded from the heat in others. Most art on display is 17th century and newer, so if that’s what you enjoy, you’ll love the exhibits. I did not. Security and associates were very kind and helpful. Overall it was not a bad experience, but I wish I hadn’t planned it into my trip considering the other things that could have take it’s place.
Beautiful building. We loved walking around and seeing all the artwork. All for free! The staff is very friendly and the building is kept clean. I absolutley loved the gift shop. And if you are here you must eat at Gertrudes! We had brunch there and the pancakes and french toast were soooo good !!
FREE art museum. Great place.
This will probably be a pretty nice museum once reconstruction is finished, but for now be aware that everything will be just a little more complicated than you might expect, especially if you are bringing a young child (the bathrooms are upstairs past the bag check, so diaper changes get to be a bit of a trick of asking permission). The collection is nice, but not phenomenal on the scale of art museums.
I love this museum. Unfortunately one of the security (tall thin blond male) was very rude to me and my daughters. Apparently, he redirected me from being in the impressionist room taking pictures and scolded my youngest daughter who is 8 for being to close to the picture frame. My oldest daughter said he was following us around. I don't mind redirection, however he was nasty. Just completely rude. And then I noticed he kept staring at us. I should have gotten his name but I just wanted to get out of there after that. Otherwise it was a great experience.
This museum has a wonderful collection of art. I attended their free tour on Wednesday & the tour guide gave a good overview, but ended up spending the whole hour in their "Home" exhibit which was a great exhibit. Their website was helpful & has very clear instructions on how to get there using public transportation. They also have a decent size sculpture garden that is so relaxing to walk through.
Always a great museum to visit. The Cone Collection is a worrh of visit in itself. This year they are solely dedicated to accessioning female artists. A great need. I feel their American Art collection from the Civil War to WWII lacks a curatorial focus. Too much of a sampler.
Exquisite displays of impressionist and modern art. Nice for a short visit, great for an all day art adventure. Special exhibits that are free for Baltimore City residents. A Charm City must see. Free general admission.
Great museum, world class collections, magnificent galleries, courts and spaces. Fabulous and large Henri Matisse collection. Among the most beautiful sculpture gardens anywhere, stunning pieces. Galleries made from entire reassembled historic rooms from historic properties, houses. Astounding original plaster work and designs!
One of the highlights of our visit to Baltimore - holds its own with a stunning Matisse collection unlike any I’ve seen so far in the world, thanks to the Cone sisters. Wonderfully curated with informative placards and free admission is wonderful.
I enjoyed my visit here so much. There's so much to see but my favorites were their collections of paintings as well as the ancient mosaics. Wow. We had a great day here - highly recommended it. There's a diverse range of art and just really enjoyable
Delightful treat for the eyes and ears. I've always enjoyed the exhibitions and they vary displays enough that a monthly visit will offer something new!
Plus, the restaurant serves delicious food.
The Lenore Staff LOVES strolling over to the BMA to peruse. What a treasure it is to have such a phenomenal collection so close to us!! We are always gathering up materials to give to our residents and tours so that we can show off the stunning arts our city plays host to.
We would recommend a trip here any day to see the truly unique and stunning collection they have curated. Plus, they have free family art workshops on Sundays. How cool is that??
This museum doesn't hold a very extensive collection but they do have a few areas of strength (e.g. Henri Matisse, Antioch mosaics) and locally themed exhibits; protective glasses on some of its paintings could be annoying if you want to take pictures; no extended hours during the week; no café but there is a restaurant on-site. Overall a positive visiting experience and I felt welcome; would probably rate it higher if I'm more into modern and contemporary art.
Haven't been here for over a year. My wife is an artist so comes more often with artist friends. I'm more of a Philistine. The cafe is very nice and very busy. Suggest going there on arrival to make a reservation. Then plan the visit to accommodate the meal So, I assume that my priorities are clear now.
Great and affordable place to spend some quality time with the family.
Lovely building full of amazing art collections. The Cone Collection is exquisite. The staff are friendly and helpful here. The gift shop has a great selection of unique gift items
Free admission to incredible variety and quality of historic, contemporary and modern collections. Participating exhibits. Indoor and out. Fabulous variety of engaging books, games, cards, etc. in gift shop. Gertrude's Cafe-server Monique.
Most of the artwork was beautiful. I still don't know why naked people are considered Art. 1 room was entirely like that so it was not friendly for my children. Also there was a section with headphones downstairs my daughter was listening to. When I put them on was talking about fertility goddesses and the like. Shouldn't be there for folk of various religions. It was offensive to me
I am not a fan of art but I was astonished at what came once I entered the building. Since, looking at the building, from outside, you will not guess that it is full of surprises. I really liked the Asian art section and sculpture garden. A must visit for all the art lovers out there. And to add cherry at the top there is no entry fee.
Went on a date with my girlfriend, great collection of art. Very clean, great security. The layout is a little wonky, felt like we were walking in circles to see every exhibit. Free general admission, only pay to see private exhibits
I was impressed by the art collection from the most notorious artists of the the last centuries.
They have some very good examples of artwork from many different time periods. Really enjoyed walking through the exhibits. They also had some more current art which involved videos and performance art. One area labeled "mature content" had many things going on with the artists, but I walked away with a feeling that life is absurd, and maybe that was their point. Another video exhibit was more of a commentary on life in the US right now, and comparing it to revolutionary times. For me, that was more engaging, and I enjoyed hearing this artist's perspective. Definitely would recommend this to others, and I applaud the Museum for embracing new media for art.
Great community museum. Main collection is free to visit. Special exhibits often require a fee. Restaurant is very good. Nice collection of artwork from past two millennia from across the globe
I took my six year old niece on a Sunday afternoon so we could enjoy touring the museum prior to participating in the Sunday afternoon kids' activity. The facilitators in the kids' room were great at sparking the imaginations of the children who participated the day we visited. My niece loved the entire experience. The Cone Sisters' Collection is my favorite exhibit at the BMA.
This is one of the most diverse museums I have been to. They literally have art that spans from 3rd century mosaics to extremely recent new media installations and it's wild. The curators did the Asian and African art exhibits justice by elevating them to their rightful status as high art among western art. I need to go again and again and again just to absorb all the information available there.
The Baltimore Museum of Art is a wonderful, historic asset in the Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore City. It houses an internationally renowned collection of 19th century, modern, and contemporary art. It also runs different featured shows. They advertise this to the public. General admission is free, but admission to featured displays can have a separate admission fee.
The last feature, which I believe ended a few days ago, was on African American abstract art. Interesting and thought provoking.
The museum houses Gertrude's, an upscale restaurant. There's a sculpture garden, where jazz concerts are held during the summer months amid the 33 sculptures adorning the grounds. Tickets are a little pricey, but it's a very unique experience.
They offer many outreach programs to Baltimore neighborhoods. My daughter often takes my granddaughter there to do art related activities with other children.
If you've never been to the BMA, it's worth a trip. If you have been, it's probably already on your list of things to do.
An excellent collection of paintings, from early impressionist to modern art, there's bound to be plenty you'll like. It hasn't many famous masterpieces, but plenty of masterpieces nonetheless. It isn't too overwhelmingly large either. Just right.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The information posted in the exhibition area provided helpful information for people with different levels of appreciation for arts from those periods. The display for the Cone sisters’ house was a wonderful touch.
Matisse is my favorite, and BMA has the best and significant collection of his work. I felt so lucky to be in the same room as the Blue Nude, and I absolutely love their Cone Collection! It was everything that I hoped for and more. Perfect Museum if you love Matisse!
The free family event was a real treat. Well organized, educational and enjoyed by all of our family that included a four year old, her parents and grandparents. Quite an accomplishment. The little one didn't want to leave!
It was a delightful day at the museum. Lunch at Gertrude's was very tasty. The server was friendly and efficient. The only negative comment concerns the location of our table. The reservation was made about one and one half weeks in advance. A table by a window was requested which we were given, but it was located right by the door used by the servers to access the outdoor dining area. As a result, there was constant traffic near the table, which we found to be very disturbing.
A good representation of Matisse's work. Some pieces of George Braque and Miro. It also houses traditional Americana furnishings, fine art and landscape and of course European works as well. Overall I would say it's fairly good and the best part is that admission is free!
The John water's exhibit! !! What a thrill to experience. The issue was prices in the gift shop. Very high even for a museum. ... had a nice lunch at the restaurant. So happy to be able to see an artist's work from Baltimore in the local museum!
Fantastic! Interesting collection of art and artifacts. Enjoyed sitting and relaxing outside at the water garden (art). Has a conviently located cafe with nearby parking. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They willingly offered help with the interactive exhibits.
Even though it is free year-round, I would highly recommend even IF there was an admission fee. The museum has incredible pieces and exhibitions. There's PLENTY to see and a huge variety!
Inclusive, educstional, ever-changing, and beautifully maintained. Sidenote: if you have kids and are looking for a great free Sunday activity do not hesitate to participate in the free family Sunday from 2-5pm in the first floor art studio. The staff is friendly and inviting and does a great job facilitating creativity!!
Good place to be for a day. Exhibits change often so each visit you see something new. Admission is free but parking isn't but it's not expensive at all. Lovely exhibits and a nice quiet atmosphere.
A real surprise. I have always stayed in Baltimore and gone into DC to see the big museums, but this fine collection is right here and free. Excellent collection of early modern pieces and lots of variety. Near good restaurants and easy to make it a part of a walking tour.
My family and I love the BMA. Always wonderful staff. The lockers and coat check are free. The free exhibits are great. I do feel the pay exhibits are a bit expensive for how small they are.
One of my favorite places wen I went to Baltimore..
I had a birthday lunch at Gertrude's yesterday. We loved our waiter, Jeffrey, who was attentive and courteous. The food was delicious. The restaurant was busy but finally quieted. Loved the lights.
Such a beautiful collection ranging from Asian to French. Easy to get lost for a cpl of hours.
The Baltimore Museum of Art is free & is located next to Johns Hopkins University. Please allow at least 4 hours just to see only your favorite sections. Just one block east you will find dozens of good restaurants in case you wish to break your viewing experience with a nice meal. Check the museum website for hours & parking locations & options ( usually $7 for the day ). Have fun. Some special options for children -- ask at the front desk.
Went for first time a few weeks ago. Did not know what to expect. It is a small Museum. But it has some interesting works there. The parking was great, there is street parking that is pretty cheap. But they also have a lot that is either 5 or $7.
Really enjoyed the John Waters Exhibit which closes in early Jan 2019. Impressive collection of Matisse paintings and sculptures. Free admission but special exhibits may have an admission fee.
The featured installations are always great!! I usually donate something everytime, so you literally can't beat the price (free). And the gift store and restaurant are AMAZING ♡
Enjoyed the diverse art. They also had a good collection of African art.
Really incredibly amazing place. We had a great time. I hadn't been here since 1991 and was so excited to bring my kids here. We saw some amazing art and learned a lot about art and history. We can not wait to come back!
Mostly modern art with some classical stuff in one room that seems oddly placed. Museum is free but if you park on site there's a fee. Nice to go once if you're not particularly interested in modern art, just to see it.
Very nice museum! Well kept, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a spectacular collection! Gertrude's restaurant inside is an awesome place to eat. Their breads are wonderful!
Great collection of Matisse with some surprise VanGough, Picasso, and Rodin sculptures. Not crowded like DC museums so you can really be with the pieces and take time without people bumping into you.
What a lovely museum to visit. Went for the Slavery, The Prison Industrial Complex photography exhibit and was just blown away. Ended up exploring other parts of the museum. Would absolutely recommend this as a to do for anyone.
The museum engages you from the historic and classical through the modern into the contemporary. The sculpture garden is a place worth your time. The sunlight marks the seasons as much as the sculpture touches the psyche.
John Waters Exhibit was amazing. Best part. Free to members.
Love this place. So easy to get lost in time.
Great restaurant, great art garden. Free handicap parking at side entrance.
For a free museum, 5 stars. The BMA typically has interesting exhibits and they change several times throughout the year, so it keeps the museum from becoming irrelevant to the city and the college students next door. Most recently, there was an exhibit of art done by K-12 students from Baltimore County (and City, I assume, but I don't remember specifically) Public Schools which was fun to spend time in and appreciate the talent of younger people.
We didn't go to the museum we went to Getrude's. I had a salad I loved the grilled chicken. I also enjoyed my cocktail as well. We sat at the bar but did walk the garden to look at the sculptures on display. I didn't want to sit on the patio though it did look nice. I prefer to eat away from outdoor pests like gnats and flies not to say they had any. I will probably be back again.
I love this museum and it's free except for special exhibits. The Generations: A history of black art exhibit is a must see. Will definitely come back for visits when I'm back in Baltimore.
Went to see the special Matisse exhibit. It was very well done. I'm a member, so it's free to me.
Along with The Walters, one of the shining jewels of Baltimore. Free, except for certain special exhibits, and a little bit of something for everyone. Make sure to explore all the nooks and crannies, and if you haven't been in awhile, check it out again: they change the exhibits up more often than I've come to expect from museums. And check out Gertrude's the attached restaurant! Fantastic food overlooking the BMA's sculpture garden.
Beautiful museum & restaurant!
The collection is world class, with an amazing core bequeathed from Baltimore's golden age. The restaurant, Gertrude's, is excellent. One can easily spend a day here, with great pleasure.
I am a bit spoiled. This is a NICE museum. It is a good place for someone to start their museum experience. I felt like it was a sampler. Clean, not crowded when we were there. The layout is a tad confusing (ie: what flow should we take). Not a world class museum, but some world class artifacts.
During the turn of COVID-19, so the Cone Collection is still closed 😢, we'll be back though. The sculpture garden is beautiful and I especially liked the African Art collection. …
This museum recently reopened after a multimillion dollar renovation that completely overhauled the main lobby area, the giftshop, the Contemporary wing and even reopened a historic entrance that was closed for decades.
This museum has a wide range of artworks in both medium and artists ranging from paintings and textiles to sculptures and video, from Mattise and Renoir to more modern artists such as Andy Warhol and Franz West.
What's so awesome about this museum is it has completely free admission, some temporary exhibitions may require an additional fee to enter and view but the permanent collection is free to view.
Great museum with a wide variety of art. Art from Asia, Africa and elsewhere as well as a lot of American and European art. Paintings, sculpture, silver, furniture and more. Don't miss the Tiffany trophy for the Preakness, Rodin's The Thinker, amazing mosaics from the 6th century and much more.
Really amazing collection of Matisse here. Plus a lot of the other French masters. The museum restaurant is excellent whether you're looking for a sandwich for lunch or fine dining.
The John Waters show is worth the visit. He exhibited as a fine artist in the most recent Venice Biennale and his work here shows why he was selected.
This is more than the Waters show. The Cone sisters wing shows a depth of collecting reflective of the wealth of the city.
Easy to get to on the Purple route of the Charm City Connector, the free Baltimore bus system.
Had brunch at Gertrude's with family on a Sunday. Great food and service. After brunch went over to check out Adorned exhibit and Africa art. Had a lovely time.
I attended a wedding for my husband's great niece. It was a nice evening. The food, lighting, candles and atmosphere lend a unique quality to a memorable night.
A stunning gem for Baltimore, an absolute must visit and something to be cherished and supported. Thematically featuring work from predominantly 17th century to today along with notable African, Asian and modern art exhibits, the BMA excels where the Walters with it's mostly ancient to 19th century art somewhat stops (though the Walter's collection continues to also diversify, modernize and enchant through their expanded ceramics) making the two free institutions entirely complementary to each other and perfect unofficial siblings.
While the traditional galleries of American and English paintings, furniture and preserved historic rooms in the original wing of the BMA building are beautiful and worth seeing on their own the BMA has been, from my last visit, integrating modern installments to the galleries juxtaposing the traditional images and pieces with modern ones along with relevant commentary. It's fresh and surprising and helps create new discussions for pieces that could be considered staid.
As always since it's debut the Cone Collection is a beating heart in the complex showcasing a stunning cache of Post Impressionist masterpieces particularly those of Matisse, which are always surprising to know they reside in our own backyard and free to approach and explore.
The modern wing of the museum too continues to astound, perhaps more than ever, and it's expansion into solo artist, multimedia, and photography exhibits snaking throughout the entire museum bring even additional variety and surprises for the guest, having to walk through one exhibit to get to another in some locations.
Adding still the walkable sculpture gardens and the availability of Gertrude's (if you can get a seat) a fabulous modern American restaurant and decadent brunchtime royalty make the BMA an entirely self sufficient space for an entire day of reflection, enrichment and maybe a bit of self indulgence. Please come and soak it all in.
Beautiful artwork, very well themed and placed. Even down to classic furniture from different time periods. Wish I had more time when I went.
Fabulous sculpture show of works by African-American Jack Whitten. Had he spent more time in New York instead of a small village in Greece, he would have been far better recognized. His show now moves to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. I hope it will be as well-received as it was here. A fabulously talented painter as well. He deserves much more attention...
A world class collection that is free to enter, rarely crowded, and staffed by helpful art students willing to answer questions. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Bmore!
I enjoyed my experience! Would definitely go again. It would be nice if the security guards are more nicer and has a friendly approach but overall, my experience was nice. Learned some interesting things that one day I went.
I visited the restaurant Gertrude's within the musuem. The meal was great. My entire party was satisfied. The musuem I havent visited in a while. I've brought my kids several times because it is free. It's a very boring art musuem. The outdoor garden provides a place for kids to run but that's not why you take them. 4 stars for restaurant. 3 stars for musuem.
Great, free museum. The Cone Collection is particularly outstanding, given the world-class collection of Matisse paintings. The building is beautiful, and the temporary exhibits are often very interesting.
Took our students here today for a quick field trip. We focused on the African American artists primarily. Our docent, Helene, was very knowledgable and patient with our kids (day before last day of school!). Sooo much cool stuff to check out! Our kids we're actually bummed we only had an hour to spend here. Next time!
There is so much to see here, from masterpieces by Picasso, to contemporary installations, to antiquities. There are historical range was impressive, and the galleries were manageable without becoming too fatigued.
A great place to take young children to experience. My grandchild visited for the first time today. She enjoyed it so much that she is looking forward to her next visit. Oh, she wants to bring me along, too. Lol
The spacing and labeling of art works in this museum is superb. I spent one hour in a group with a very knowledgeable docent taking us through the "American" collection, with a primary emphasis on Tiffany. It was time extremely well-spent. I knew little to nothing about Tiffany's work, and came away captivated and enlightened.
The collection is quite diverse, but well-labelled and beautifully hung. Like many museums with a long heritage, it's easy to get lost, but that's part of the journey, a wrong turn may bring you to a collection you didn't even know you'd be interested in.
Top of my "must see list" were 4 paintings by Hudson River artists which I have admired in books for years, and there they were, well lit, carefully hung, succintly labeled and intelligently described! And presented in a way that one's thought process could easily move from the Hudson River in the 19th Century to Tiffany in the same era. Worth a trip from New York.
Admission is free, and so is the Circulator to get there. And be careful how you approach the museum, you may get captivated by the sculptures you pass through on the way and not get inside!
As regional-class art museums go, this place is pretty fantastic. You walk in without paying, or going through any forced song-and-dance about “donating”; they have a lovely Bruce Nauman neon sculpture topping off a sorta-kinda-Brutalist addition to the primary neoclassical columns-and-wings structure; if you visit during an appropriately temperate month, they have a superlative sculpture garden with a Miró and many other treats permanently ensconced therein; fans of Dan Flavin, Jenny Holzer, Ed Ruscha, and Olafur Ellasson [sp?] won't leave disappointed… I could go on, but why spoil it? Worth the trip.
The bma is one of my favorite museums. They have just a little bit of everything! However their speciality is definitely modern and contemporary art. They continually have new exhibits and are really trying to make a better museum and collection. I always have a good time at the bma. I always see something new and different and interesting. We are so lucky to have such a fantastic museum in Baltimore and even luckier that it's free!!
Even when they have shows and exhibits you have to purchase, they often have ways to get around paying like a pay what you want day.
They have loads of lectures from contemporary artists and activists, usually free of charge.
The staff is really wonderful, especially the security officers.
I love the bma so much.
Really impressive exhibits and good discounts for students and seniors. I couldn't believe how many well-known artists they had, it was a very pleasant surprise.
A favorite... Great art, lovely sculpture garden, fabulous restaurant located within. Elegant but comfortable feel. Relatively easy to park. Always a good go-to option.
Incredibly nice collection curated sensibly and respectfully. Lovely restaurant. The gift shop offers a wide selection of goods across many price points.
The Cone Collection! If you like impressionist art, fauvism, etc. you have to see this collection. Their contemporary collection is a bit small and doesn't include many women artists. They also have a lot of Christian, especially Catholic works from medieval and Renaissance.
My family had a great time exploring and learning. Plus I came here for a college assignment and got an 'A' for my grade. Lots of people should come and show their families the treasures of American history here at the Baltimore Museum of Art
Loved this place! takes about 2-3 hours for a casual look around
Love this place. So glad there's free art for all to enjoy. New exhibits come and go, so I visit often!
1st, Big ups to the BMA for being the one of the few museum in Baltimore that offers free general admission. If your visiting Charm City or a local its definitely worth a visit. The special exhibits are always thought provoking and visually stimulating. Art After Hours is always a good time too. Here checking out "Generation A History of Black Abstract Art". Free99 all weekend. Follow @slplanning on Instagram for more pics, videos, freebies, foodie finds, and things to do.
Beautiful artwork and the landscaping outside is lovely. One of the delights of BMofA is Gertrude's. Highly reccomend having one meal here. Everything is amazing.
Amazing collection of Henri Matisse from the Cone sisters collection and other works. Free to the public too. Nice gift shop and restaurant, though pricey.
Great for all ages, kids have a supervised art room and the exhibits are top notch. Small but definitely worth the trip and it's free.
Very clean and organized. Free for everyone!!! Constant rotation of exhibits. No dull moments. Art well kept and restored. Wonderful school enviroment.
Absolutely beautiful collection in a beautiful building. Friendly and helpful staff. The Monsters and Myths exhibit is amazing! Definitely check it out!
Amazing collection that included some of the greatest artists in the world...a short visit turned into many enjoyable hours. I admit that some of the film art was not my cup of tea but there is something for everyone..
Awesome place to visit beautiful art gallery
Was my first time absolutely loved it it was a beautiful place. There is so much in this city that I have not experienced first hand. There is a lot of history in this building. Love it looking forward to going back!
It is so pretty and Beautiful art pieces many different cultures. It was really beautiful and I enjoyed it with my family parking was decent and free year around.#Very historic.
Outstanding collections on top of the Cone Collections.
The renovation is a success.
The fact the museum is free should be better advertised; I know students from JHU who are not even aware.
The free gated scenic sculpture nature walk park to the right of the museum is closed every Monday and Tuesday, otherwise it's opened year around from 11am to dusk. 🐛🦋🐞🐝🌲🌿🍃🌱🍂🍁🌾🗿⛲️🌌🏙 …
My son, several friends and I attended the members' special lecture about the Crossing Borders prints exhibit and delicious brunch as well as the exhibit itself. The lecturer was stupendous--many of us thought she was one of the best we have heard. She is a genuine expert in her field.
We not only learned a great deal about the Mexican artists of the period, but a good deal about the history during which several of artists painted. The important role of art in cultures was underscored with the terrific slides the speaker showed to underscore the points she made.
Many thanks to the BMA for this fine event!
Nancy and Peter Mickelsen
Love this free space! What a gem with the permanent exhibit from the Cohn sisters collection. John waters retrospective was okay- expected more but they are trying to be a little edgy at least.
Fantastic and free museum! Their current special exhibit on Monsters and Myths (have to pay) was great. Recommend if you’re ever in town.
Lovely museum. Lots of what looked like construction when we went. Restaurant and bar were good but the bar wasn't clean. We had a very nice day there.
Gorgeous architecture on the outside, biggest collection of Matisse, phenomenal restaurant attached, gift shop that is more shop than gift (in a good way) and consistently interesting exhibits. It's also free!
I love this place. There is so much variety. Something for any culture or walk of life. It's free too! I visited for almost a whole day and still feel the need to return soon.
Only saw the John Waters exhibit after hours but will be back to check it all out.
ETA incredible collection of Matisse which really merits a visit all by itself.
A truly wonderful art museum!
Beautiful Quanyin statue is always a pleasure to see✌🏾 …
One of my favorite places to spend an afternoon. I dont make it there nearly enough. And it's free outside of the special exhibits. What more could you ask for?!
Truly engaging exhibits with tons of information about collections as well as each piece. I had no idea Baltimore influenced so much art in Europe with the big names I've always heard. Matisse, Van Gogh, Picasso, Dega! I loved getting to know the personalities of the Cone sisters by their chosen decor and found it fascinating to see a true replication of their apartment in how they portrayed the pieces as opposed to how museum curators display the collection. I was also amazed at my full immersion into the Succession of Nature, a traveling exhibit that is inspired by toxic waste. It reminded me a great deal of Baltimore Trash Wheel project and it's great purpose. BMA truly brings Baltimore art to life.
Much smaller than the Met and Lacks the variety.
'Small, but representative, French Impressionist section and second level Dutch Masters rooms. Worth an hour and a half to two.
Easily the best art museum I've been to. The John Waters display was absolutely stunning and I'm do happy I got the chance to see it.
Free admission, free arts and crafts for families from 2 to 5 on Sundays. We always go there on Sunday, it's a great way to end your week.
The art displays are out of this world. It is also a another alternative for a museum in the city. I went to a presentation today about the arabbers from Baltimore City and their legacy. It was very informative as well as fantastic.
A weird yet strangely fun experience. Some of the "art" is odd and the $8-an-hour security guards monitor visitors, as if everyone came to steal or vandalize something. And the parking sucks.
The BMA was very nice. The exhibits were very interesting. It's a nice place to visit to learn about all aspects of art and art history.
Great exhibits and guest-friendly layout. Good place for those who might not be at experts as well as for those with an expertise. Fun and educational activities for individuals and families.
Under rearrangement at the moment but the Faberge and Lalique objects alone are worth the visit. Also some interesting small Roding sculptures. With a visit or two.
This museum deserves 10 stars, not only 5. The entrance is free and I was in town just for a few days, so I decided to visit it without getting previous information. I was welcomed by a smiling girl who gave me the map and told me where to start from. There are 4 main halls near the entrance, with furniture, objects, pottery, and art from the American history. There is a great Georgia O'Keefe in the last room to the right. The quilts collection is original and emotional, in some ways.
After the exhibitions in the main hall, there are some hallways showing antique mosaics on their walls, coming from Syria. The wonder stands in the next rooms: paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir, Sysley, Gaugin, Raffaello, Botticelli, Severini, Miro'; a statue by Giacometti and another one by Degas among others.
This is a wonderful place to visit.
Beautiful space. Fantastic art collection, I was pleasantly surprised. Very helpful staff. Unobtrusive security. A real class act. A must see.
Despite the necessary Covid restrictions, I greatly enjoyd my time here. All if the staff were very kind, helpful and detrmined to make sure everyone had a smooth visit.
Such a nice museum and you can't beat the price (free!) to see works by some of the best know artists in the world.
Baltimore at it's best. Great collections. Free and always a current exibit. Gertrude's restaurant is fantastic too. Wonderful Museum Store. .
Cool way to spend the day!
We love the bma. The permanent and rotating exhibits are an absolute gem of the city. Art after dark is also a must see/do.
Nice collection of various works however most paintings are all mounted under glass. I don't feel this is a good way to display hung art.
Excellent contemporary and modern art exhibits, plus the famous "Cone Collection" (including masterworks by Picasso and Matisse) and a delightful modern sculpture garden make the BMA one of the best museums in Baltimore. While you are there, make time to have brunch, lunch, or dinner at the museum restaurant: Gertrude's at the BMA. There, you can enjoy a delicious (and affordable) meal crafted by John Shields, world-renowned expert on cuisine of the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland. Great art and great food are what keep me coming back to the BMA. 🙂
The BMA is a treasure trove of art from all eras and locations. Standouts in the collection stem largely from the Cone Sisters of Bolton Hill Baltimore, who had the good fortune to be in Paris in the heyday of impressionism. Their large collection forms the core of one of the finest batches of Matisse to be found anywhere, including France. Don't neglect the other galleries, however, including art of Asia and Africa, and a slew of 17th and 18th century works. Sculpture and mosaics from Greece and Rome up to Moore and Giacometti, and an outdoor sculpture garden complete the picture. The Museum cafe is Gertrudes, one of Baltimore's fine dining experiences.
The Cone Sisters collection - advised and promoted by Gertrude Stein is simply one of the most spectacular collections of early modern painting in the world - and the rest of the collection is surprisingly great. Sunday brunch in the restaurant was a highlight.
We spent well over an hour in the wonderful, beautiful, eclectic sculpture garden. Will be back to do the inside another day. Parking was easy and convenient.
I love the Baltimore Museum of Art because it has a diverse collection of beautiful contemporary art. Also, this museum has wonderful public programs and visiting art exhibitions.
First time visitor- traveled from Staten Island, NY to see the Matisse/Diebenkorn exhibit- simply thrilled to see the juxtaposition of these artists works- a wonderful, thought-provoking exhibit- then I discovered 3 more rooms with 20 works by Matisse- the Africa and Asia collection was also excellent, especially the masks- I love this museum and will be back
Nice array of art - however, it is fairly noisy with all the tours passing through, and it is swarming with security. Constantly makes you feel surveiled/threatened.
A beautiful museum that has a lot of classical as well as modern art to view. The sculpture garden is one of my favorites when the weather is warm.
forward thinking decision on doing 'Make it Now' survey of asking the people what they want in art. more museos should also open up their vaults and minds, art needs to stay relevant, bring on the avant garde!
Won 2 jazz concert tickets (from WHFC-FM jazz radio station based on campus at Harford Community College) to see one of my favorite male jazz vocalists: Kurt Elling in concert at the Baltimore Museum of Art in April 2018. Five star rating for all aspects of the visit.
This is a nice space to walk around. We had really nice weather the day we went and we walked around the sculptures before going into the museum. I could come back just for this.
Great place to visit, impressive art and lots to see. Make a day of it on a Sunday starting with brunch at Gertrude's attached to the Baltimore Museum of Art.
I love this museum; it is becoming incredibly progressive!
BMA gets props for its awesome renovation that gets us coming up the front steps, through the FRONT DOOR (not the side, which was like coming in through the servants entrance), and into the beautiful central room again. The whole experience is transformed by this change. You come into a classical, light-filled area. Mind you, no one ever spent much space in this room under the old configuration but now you want to sit on the benches on the side and relax or people watch. The first room to the right is the re-hung American galleries which I would never go into before, but they look great and showcase the role of Baltimore in art and commerce in a grander time. This is also true of the re-hung Maryland Room to the left where the art is displayed as it would have been in the 1800s. It's a little odd to have formal portraits on the north side and the representations of the changes in art on the south side happening at the same time, but once you wrap your head around it, it's kind of brilliant. That's all we saw this visit, but the contemporary galleries (where we usually spend our time) are always good and thought-provoking and the Cone collection is great for people who like Impressionists and early Modern.
Beautiful. Very kid friendly but also a great place to visit for some alone time.
I love this art museum.
Beautiful and lovely! The most amazing and one of a kind books, jewelry, magnets, and assorted items for babies to adults.
I just love this place. I bring everyone here as often as possible. Who doesn't love food and art? Plus, the best dog park is directly across the street!
Very nice museum! And not crowded at all so u can have enough time to appreciate the art!
I always enjoy taking out-of-town visitors to the BMA. It's pleasant and not overwhelmingly large. I particularly like taking visitors through the Cohn Collection, and then having lunch at Gertrude's.
Very clean and claming atmosphere. Wounderful exhibits and an all around great time. Loving in the 80s was great up untill early April I think the 12th.
I can’t believe this place is free. If you’re a baltimore resident and haven’t been here you NEED to check it out. I’m not a big fan of art but this place still impresses me!
An excellent collection of art ranging from 19th century to modern contemporary art. Fine Collection of Matisse Rodin Seurat Gainsborough Etc. Amazing Antioch mosaics.
We had so much fun visiting the museum. Learning valuable history while admiring different cultures and their crafts and art.
Awesome loads of educational and beautiful art. I cannot wait for the new exhibit. Keep up the good work.
The freaking art was super cool. Here is a pic of some of the art.
Quite a few galleries were closed but normally this is a great museum. I did a scavenger hunt here and it made it very interesting to wander around the museum!
One of my favorite places to visit when I’m Baltimore. Excellent art. The majority is closed for renovations, but we enjoyed our time.
This museum has a lot of beautiful artwork. The black art that's here is beautiful and creative. The only thing I despise is art taken from. Africa. Give it back lol.
I love the Warhol exhibit here. The architecture of the building is pretty nice too which makes exploring all the rooms a lot of fun
Grate place to see some Matice art. Focuses more on modern art. They change exhibits every few months so there is always something interesting there.
It's free! Tickets must be reserved online 1 hour beforehand.
Wonderful free museum! Plenty of places to explore both indoor and outdoors. Limited parking available. Also can have events there too!
It's free unlike Baltimore visionary art museum and has good art they also allow different types of people and I don't see that in a lot of places
Been going here for more than a decade- great collection and the sculpture garden is also lovely.
Went to see my niece's school project and ran into the free Sunday Workshop! We didn't have time to stop and do the project but will be back to try one out soon.
A great art and historic museum with great exhibits and beautiful to browse about. The price is fantastic (free) and that indeed is not bad at all.
Great for a full day--you can enjoy all of it and not feel overwhelmed. Loved the calm sculpture garden.
I had an awesome day exlporing the exhibits. The staff was welcoming. I really appreciated the variety of exhibits.
Really nice for being free. A few good paintings and sculptures. And overall, worth visiting if you live in the area.
Really liked it. Wish more of the Cone sisters' legacy was viewable and also applaud the effort to be more inclusive! Worth the visit and more!
Great art wonderful pieces. The way art is being gobbled up by the super rich the art that was left to the museum is spectacular.
An incredible collection of incredible art
One of Baltimore’s gems. A wide variety of artistic treasures from around the world. Wonderful programming for families and cultural events to enjoy.
Magnificent
See the Cone Sisters' collection
Well presented, good collection, only occasionally did the environmental fans obtrude their noise. The Walters, by comparison, needs a huge redo, noise is horrible.
This is a gem of Baltimore. It's free to get in for most exhibits, and I love that I can just stop by for an hour when I'm having a stressful day. Don't miss the Antioch Mosaics.
For a free museum this place rocks! See Monet, Picasso, and Warhol all in one place. This is a great place to spend an afternoon.
Fabulous collection of classical and modern art, and it's free! They also have a great gift shop, garden and cafe.
Great museum! Well rounded collection, free admission, and friendly staff. Great time.
The famous is mixed so delightfully with the amateur. This is not about brand names but rather art.
Totally worth every... Sundays are free.
Scavenger Hunt Success at the BMA!
This was a free entrance museum. Very interesting arts, I also loved the outside structure. Took many pictures.
The Matisse/Diebenkorn show was one of the best exhibitions I've been to in recent years and overall the BMA has a great collection
Wonderful free local museum. A must see if you are interested in painting and sculpture.
Love the art after dark events and they have great exhibits.. family art on sundays and they even put me on the fall events calendar lol.
Great varied selection with new exhibits all the time and it's free so it's pretty hard to beat. Well worth an afternoon
Pretty impressive collection. Special exhibition cost $15 extra but main museum is still free.
Go as often as you can! It's free!
Great exhibit on abstract Black artists. Amazing show worth seeing and only there for another week.
Went to see the African American abstract art exhibition. Wonderful. Quite meticulous details that pulled you in. Go see
Nice little Museum with a cool sculpture garden and a pretty good Matisse collection. Not busy and relaxed place to view art.
The BMA is the perfect size. There is enought breadth to appeal to everyone's interests, but it is not so large as to be overwhelmed like at the National Gallery or the Met.
Love the fact this is a free museum and so much to see. Had dinner at Gertrude's which was delicious.
Favorite museum in Baltimore for contemporary art. Enjoyed some nice old African art when I was there last as well.
Beautiful museum. Much more art than I thought would be there. Warhol, Picasso, Matisse and more. I was pleasantly surprised
I liked the fact that it was free and I was able to enjoy most of the artwork and parking was the only complaint I have but they have to make money somehow
I loved the Range of exhibitions as well as the food in the restaurant and the gift shop was very nice. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
For the citizens of The Great State of Maryland, This is Our Wonderful Must see Sites which will make you proud!!!!! BMA Lets Go👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 …
The Generations exhibition is a great way of celebrating new artists. BMA does a nice job of mixing it up.
Great exhibitions and for the price of free it is a great place to spend time with family or even on a date. Definitely check it out.
Great visit, great to have precautions in place, and can't wait to go back!
The John Waters exhibit is must-see for anyone from Baltimore. His ribald humor and artistry are displayed in force.
Nice museum with impressive impressionist collection
Gertrude's. Excellent food; excellent customer service. Made a simple grilled cheese sandwich taste like a delicacy!!
I am a lover of museums history all sorts of Art this place is just awesome I really enjoyed it
We are not art experts but we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Beautiful and peaceful facility - and it's free!
Great museum. Very nice restaurant and gift shop where one can find unusual gifts.
Only visited outdoor sculpture garden because of time constraints. Loved it. Eclectic collection beautiful and unexpected.
Beautiful museum with a lot to exhibit. Definitely keep your eyes out for the Art After Hours events!
That was a Blast the museum has a lot of cool stuff
The BMA dates back to 1907 and is a beautiful museum. The BMA features contemporary and historic art!
Great museum. Wonderfully curated. Pleasant, accessable, parking. Just a pleasure to visit.
It was nice and educational lots to learn from but museums are not my pleasure.
Great collection of Impressionist art, good contemporary collection, good collection of African and Asian art hidden in the basement, the BMA is free and open to the public.
Interesting collection (loved "Women Behaving Badly"!)
And did I mention free admission?
Wonderful free museum, spent 2 hours there and did not see half the exhibits.
What a great place. Friendly staff, beautiful painting, sculptures, masks, furniture from the 1700-1800s.
Visited the Cone Collection and the African-American abstract art exhibit. Both are worth seeing.
Try the vegan crab cakes! They're made from zucchini. Our server was amazing too! Thanks
Always have great exhibits. Also it’s FREE ! Donates are welcomed as well.
One of my favorite places to visit and the restaurant that is connected to it has awesome food as well and great servers and a beautiful layout
The displays were really fantastic but there was a homeless man smoking in the textile display..
Took visitors who have lived in NY; they were very impressed
Loved it! Great opportunity to introduce children to art and give them the opportunity to read/learn new things
Beautiful building. Free lockers. The Matisse/Diebenkorn exhibit was very well done.
The BMA is a beautiful place to visit. Over been dozens of times. I always have a long visit and great experience.
