Reviews of B&O Railroad Museum
Rich Johnson
It was interesting with a tour guide. No coat for this. Several retired guys happy to tell you about it. I am not a train collector, but I like history and machinery. Lots of displays. Several things you can get in. Kids would really enjoy. Teenagers are 50/50. Recommend by someone that had 2 teens and they really enjoyed it. It is very close to the baseball and football stadium. Safe & free parking inside the gate. Discounts for teens, kids and seniors. Would have liked a few more videos or audio.
Victoria King
Highly recommended for families with small children. I took my two toddlers and they enjoyed themselves.
While there were many displays that were off limits, I appreciated the inclusion of trains that we could enter and view. The small reading/train set nook for toddlers and young kids is a nice addition. There is also a small playground outside where kids can burn off energy. There's also a replica train set of the Maryland train system but it wasn't running when we visited. I was probably more disappointed than the kids, though!
The 20-minute train ride wasn't the most exciting, but it's a memorable experience for the little ones. The differences between "first class" and "coach" are negligible - if you're looking to save, go with coach.
In all, this is a great museum and learning experience for the entire family. It'll take about an hour to 1.5 hours to take it all in. Enjoy!

All the kids love the scale model city with working trains and I have to admit we loved it too. Finding all the details were fun and kept my toddler transfixed for 20 mins (which is a long time).
There’s a small trains set as well as a small play area outside for kids.
The old trains are pretty cool to see and walking through them transported us back to those days and even though some of the trains were musty, it added to the authenticity of how old they were.
Staff were helpful and the cafe is small but has hot dogs, snacks and pretzels and lots of drink options.
Randomly they have an old jug with a deer park water label that made me Google how long they’ve been around…
Also there’s plenty of parking.
Diamond Perry
It's definitely a place for kids. The history of it all is for the parents. The reason I give it four stars is because the train ride isn't worth it. The price nor the ride itself. The ride is very short and because it's located in Baltimore, it's nothing awe-inspiring. Other than that, it's a great museum, even let's u walk through a train or two. I didn't go to the Cafe so I don't know what they serve. 4 stars definitely.

Lots of fun for kids! We came here with my young kids and my in laws. The historical information was interesting for the older family members, and there was plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied. They had several wooden table trains to play with, books to read, outdoor playground and model train with buttons to push. The staff were all friendly and helpful! The museum is clean and well maintained, and was nicely decorated for the holidays. I would give another star but the price is a little steep, I think the train ride should at least be included.
Justin Rogers-Cooper
Been here a few times, and there’s always something new to explore. The most recent time was for their holiday “polar express” train ride, which was loads of fun. Train enthusiasts of all ages will certainly get a kick out of it, and the museum should appeal to those with an interest in railroads and the role of Baltimore in that storied history. The amazing display of well-kept, actual locomotives and passenger cars from all eras is a sincere treat, particularly in the roundhouse. The staff were friendly. Anyone passing through Baltimore should have a go!

This is an amazing train museum. They have many historic trains. They also have signs that give great information. There are museum staff that walk around the museum that can answer questions. The old trains inside of the museum are beautifully restored. They also have many trains outside. I highly recommend for any train lover.

A lot can be said when you the kids are having fun at a museum. 😱. And my kids did and want to return in the spring so we can ride the train. We came on discount day and was able to stack discounts so my family 7 was able to get in for $33. There is soooo much information and several trips are needed to acquire the information. My experience with the staff was pleasant. We ate outside and parking was available. I am not fond of the gender neutral public bathrooms is my only dislike.
jaaz182
Static displays of collection are very good; some very nicely preserved steam locomotives, occasionally, special visits by operational heritage units. I would have to say tho, the $30 Thomas day excursion other than being worthwhile as a donation to the museum, is perhaps better spent on a regular train ride on Marc train.
Deborah Griffieth
Any train enthusiast will enjoy the opportunity to see so. many. actual. trains. up close and in person! Expecting a more typical "exhibits and scale models" museum, I was wowed by all the actual train cars from engine to caboose and everything in between... a smaller "scale model" portion, the real stars of the show are in the parking lot, back yard, and the impressive round house. We all enjoyed, from ages 3 through 45, and planned the two hours before it closed, but could have used two more. Definitely would like to go back!
Shonda Salami
We enjoyed visiting the B&O museum. We went during a weekend event with a Thomas the train. The kids were able to ride on a train and there were staffers on each car to engage the kids with games and fun activities. It probably lasted for 10 minutes or so but for some kids that was their first train ride. The other parts of the museum were great as well. There is a lot to see and the kids are fascinated with trains and the various parts of the trains. Definitely a great place for younger and older kids.
Matt Grantz
The roundhouse that forms the centerpiece of the museum is beautiful. The historic equipment inside the roundhouse is well displayed with information boards nearby. The equipment displayed in the separate shop part of the museum is awesome, though lacking in information like the rest of the museum.
The outdoor displays were also nice, though they could've also used more information displays.
4 stars because we had to spend time dodging professional photographers doing photoshoots and they were setting up for some kind of event later that night that made the end of the visit feel somewhat rushed.
Laura Renee
If you're in Baltimore area, don't sleep on this museum! So much to see and learn about! Getting to stand in front of and even inside some of these historical pieces was so cool. Definitely a great value and overall experience!

Not gonna lie, I dont care much about trains, the only reason I went here was due to a family member we brought on a trip who loves them.
I figured it would be a 10 minute walk around a few trains and ended up being pleasantly surprised to find several large areas full of trains, models, carriages etc and you can even walk around some of the carriages and play with the train dials and levers.
The best part is the information about the underground railways and learning about the dark times in usa history that should never be forgotten.
Nick Cotsaris
A lot of trains to see here, all are restored and you are able to get on most. You are able to pay a little extra to ride a train for about 20 minutes and stop at the police horse stable to pet the horses. I don’t recommend paying for the first class seats unless you are interested in seeing how the conductor operates the train from the rear.
They have a place to get food but, it’s more like hotdogs of a hot plate, chips and soda. I recommend eating before or after.
There is a small shop to purchase items at the front door but, they don’t have much verity.
Over all a nice place to go.
Haram Chun
Even if you're not a train enthusiast, this is a great local museum where you can kill some time and learn the history of B&O railroad. As some mentioned here, the train ride isn't worth the money & time or necessary to have a better experience. Overall, a great museum!
Judy Clavin
A wonderful excursion for young (exploring the railroad cars) and old (relive history), a place to see various eras of trains and remain awed by the visuals and detail explanations. We visited on a holiday weekday and so the Roundhouse was decorated in festive cheer plus children activity tables to keep them entertained and busy.
Rolf Shmidt
This is one hell of a museum; the restored roundhouse looks truly amazing. This is the best museum of Baltimore for sure. The 1926 steam turbine electric locomotive Hudson is my personal favorite...a steam locomotive that still looks futuristic now. The scale mode of Baltimore is also quite entertaining.
Shelley Oliver
It was A day out with Thomas and it was pretty crowded. It was on a very Hot Sunday afternoon. The train ride was air-conditioned and the staff were very friendly. The ride could have been longer but the kids loved it.
Jennyfer Cordova
The museum is very nice. They have about 3 trains you can get on to see the inside. They also have a 25 min train ride that Unfortunately we missed. It’s one at 11am and 1pm. Definitely going back for this train ride.
T S
The Polar Express was a great experience for kiddos, especially if they like the film. But for us, the train museum itself was really interesting! The "North Pole" and all the Christmas stuff was just bonus icing on the cake for our little guy.
Chad Koerner
A must see for anyone! The engineering involved in the roof alone is amazing. Has to be one of the biggest collection's of train relic's around. Take your whole family!
Vicki Beacham
I was totally amazed by this place. I almost never take pictures anywhere, but I couldn't stop taking them there. So much history. So many amazing exhibits. Loved it!
Kathryn Hashem
A really enjoyable museum for both train fans and history buffs! So much to see, so many juicy tidbits of information. The only mildly disappointing, but not surprising, aspect is how not scenic the excursion was!
Ben Kahn
Great museum. Be sure to take the short train ride. Just the $3 trip is fine. No need to tide 1st class and pay more.
Amanda Weissman
So much fun! We went during Day Out with Thomas and it wasn't overly crowded and my son loved to explore the trains. Loved the diversity and inclusion from the bathrooms to the nursery mother's space to the handicap accessibility.
Z Mengal
Took my son to this museum as he is obsessed with trains! We drove almost 2hrs and it was totally worth it. Tickets are cheaper and reasonable than most other entertainment places for kids.
We missed the train ride as they said there are only 2 rides a day. Cafe was closed(opens only on weekends). But overall my son had a blast and he did not want to leave the place.
Jurassic Coaster Nerd
Large museum with a lot to look at. Some displays could use some maintenance, but they are doing as good as they can for their size.
Some of items they have on display up are last of their kind or one of a kind. Lots of cool history.
Kevin Green
Awesome train museum. We loved it as did our 4 yr old grandson. Good for all ages.
tracy watson
Found this by chance. A fantastic hidden gem!! From precursors to the train, to the latest rail technology. Well researched historical context. A number have partially open cars with period details, such as China, that show and tell what it was like to travel through the ages! Kids of all agesand history buffs will love it!
Olga Collins
We loved the exhibits. Wonderful place to visit with children. You can actually see the engines from various time periods. You can also get inside some train cars or spend some time in the repair shop. Highly recommend.
Nicholas Miles
i just learned that the Baltimore and Ohio railroad 🚞 was the first public, commercial railroad in America! now, i know how johns hopkins had enough $$$ to create the johns hopkins university and hospital! anywho, the museum is definitely worth a visit! i even became a member! the trains and their histories are wonderful. i can’t wait until they release the new exhibit about the ties between the train and the underground railroad.
Steve Kurtz
I had visited the B&O Railroad Museum before the collapse of the Roundhouse. It was nice to see the clearance car restored. The wonderful locomotives in The Roundhouse are spectacular. I would not recommend trying to bring a dog into the museum. My Sheltie was refused because of a policy that it's not explained anywhere.
Greg Michalek
Bring your walking shoes. Plan on the whole 10 to 4 period to savor the history of the iron horse, and the role it played in shaping the United Stated we have today.
Steve Hanson
A very nice special (temporary) exhibit on the Underground Railroad, lots of historic railroad equipment, things for kids to do. Worth a visit!
Ryan
Cool museum for the train lover. Lots to view. A bit expensive as compared to other museums. Easy parking.
Cloressa Orr
Wonderful Railroad Museum! Loved the miniatures and all the trains. Lots of history here.
Zainab S. Rhazi
Well worth the visit. Get the annual pass if you have kids and plan on going more than a couple of times over the span of a year.
Cassandra Bokknight
I loved historical places. We both had family members that worked for the railroad so it was pretty amazing to see all this history I have too may to post. It's a must see if you visit Baltimore, Maryland
Brian King
First class railroad museum. Gorgeous round house with the history of coal powered steam locomotives from the toy-like Tom Thumb engine of 1835+- to the bodacious monster engine ( The Allegheny ) that pulled hopper cars with thousands of tons of coal over the Appalachian mountains at 15 mph to power business and industry. Finally you'll see the first diesel engine and some beautiful streamlined late coal era passenger train engines. The placards are nicely done to tell their stories. The museum staff is sprinkled all over. These friendly folks are dyed in the wool railroad buffs. They answered our questions and told us cool stories. If you are into the technology that made the industrial revolution possible well this is a special place for. A gem.
Keke Smith
Nice exhibit and I learned some things! $20 seemed pretty steep, but you can't seem to go anywhere in Baltimore cheap, but that $20 dpes include parking so.... Lots of nice trains to see with character and charm. I did not ride the train so can't speak for it.
Michelle
We love to come here, especially my 3 year old. There are so many fun things for kids to do, see, and explore. Staff are always nice and friendly. Try to go on a day when you can go on the train ride (it doesn't run every day the museum is open). We have visited here 10+ times and it's still the place my son most often requests to visit.
Michael Landelius
Loved the roundhouse! Many early steam engines to see. Need to go back to see the car storage building! The train ride was fun, especially when you get to stop at the horse stables and learn about the police horses.
AndyEppich5712
Wonderful museum and activity center for kids. Our family couldn’t of asked for a better experience!
phil jannotti
Had a fantastic day there. Plenty to see for young & old. You can even take a ride if you are so inclined.
Erin Meye
The Roundhouse is fascinating and always fun at Christmas.
We went to the Polar Express Train ride.
Maybe 3 stars for that experience. When we were engaged, it was good. Unfortunately for a 1 1/2 to 2 hour event, you are held captive...waiting, waiting, waiting, with hundreds of antsy, restless children with nothing to occupy them. The reading of the story is kind of lost in the train with all the noise of the kids, very restless by this time. The "ride" itself is lame because the windows are covered by very thick screening, to prevent you from seeing the trash and other things that exist in the area. But that also prevents you from seeing that the train is even moving. You can feel the movement, but you REALLY have to stretch your imagination.
I think the B&O museum is just collecting money and gliding by with the bare minimum effort. They truly need to hire someone who is THEATRE oriented and CHILDREN oriented and experienced to shape this into the wonderful fun that it has the potential to be.
It's certainly not that now. There shouldn't be so much idle time for the price that is charged.
Jeff Rich
Bucket list item , wonderful experience.
I was not disappointed. CSX transportation employees get free admission.
Michael Tavener
Man this place is great. It's even better if you love trains and are 4. It was Thomas the tank engine day so they had us come in through a back building that I had never been in... Huuuuuuuge, gorgeous steam engines that my son could even play in! It was awesome! If your kid loves trains, or heck even you kind of sort of enjoy trains, you should check this place out.
Igor Grigoryev
The biggest collection trains and cars. For trains lovers, for museums lovers, and for fun time lovers. Take a ride Choo-Choo
Shauna N
Our family of four enjoyed the visit. There were exhibits inside, including a miniature town with a moving train. My daughters really enjoyed going into the actual trains that were outside. The trains showed the history of railways and had things to look at and\or touch. Good place for adults and children.
Jutty Pike
Dude. So cool. Genuinely a unique experience and completely worth a trip. The old guy volunteers are amazing. I’d love to sit down and have a beer with some of those guys and they can talk about whatever they want. I’ll just sit and hear some stories. I learned a lot and my kids get to look at trains. What more do you need in life?
A. Joyce
Great museum. The collection of trains, though not large, is awesome nonetheless. They also have a room of model trains and old clocks. The staff are friendly. I really enjoyed it. A lot of history.
Abigail Eisley
One of the only museums open M/Tu in Baltimore! Great place for kids. We took my dad to visit, and were able to apply what we paid to an annual pass. It pays for itself if we visit one more time! Great deal, and a fun place to visit and roam.
Luke Ulrich
The museum and ride were great!! So much to see and do that all three of our kids of greatly varying ages found parts they enjoyed. Our entrance was very rocky as we did not know that it was a safety day on the train ride and that we would need closed toed shoes. We made it clear that it would be a hassle and difficult to get the shoes for our daughter who was greatly looking forward to the ride. But the desk attendant would not even sell us a ticket and only gave us one time option. We made the ride, barely, only to board directly after a family in strap sandals. Then we find out there is a second ride later in the day. VERY frustrating. The bathrooms are gender neutral but no modification from the old bathrooms has been done, so there are still cracks on the stall doors that allow you to see into the stalls. I felt very awkward sending my daughter into a bathroom that anyone could enter and the privacy was not complete privacy.
Anand Rao
Amazing museum, friendly staff, so much to see, just the roundhouse can take a visitor an hour. There's so much insight to be learned about the crucial contributions of the Railroad - labor unions, strikes, pension, time zone. Many exhibits, including a very cool miniature train model set chugging slung a scale model sized city of Baltimore. I'd go there again, after subscribing to the yearly membership.
Juani S
Great place for children of all ages. Really hope the city cleans the surrounding neighborhood because you would never know the amazing place is even there. Nevertheless, B&O Railroad Museum is a must see if your visiting Baltimore. Very nice!!
Debra Webb
Great place! I take my kids here all the time! We always have fun!
Michael Smith
Loved every bit of this museum!!
They have such a nice collection of trains from different ages and tell an amazing story of each one.
Worth the money and time to go here!
Would definitely come again!
Leticia Reed
I visited the B&O Railroad this evening. It’s opened on Thursdays from 4-7, May-September. Everything they sell is local and/or fresh. It’s a great way to support local communities who work hard to make a living! ❤️
Bruce Kaplan
A great place for a day trip! You can appreciate the role of the railroads in our country's history. Activities for all ages. Take the train ride...it's short but worth the $3.
Andrew Smith
Great museum. Tons of adult and children exhibits. Lots of history here. Everyone will learn something. Parking is free and abundant. It appears to be in a safe part of town, at least during the day. Small gift shop.
Christopher Lang
A must see for anyone visiting Baltimore. There's so much history here, and seeing all the different types of trains is incredible. The rotunda is really neat from an architectural standpoint, and there's lots of different rooms that you can learn more about the B&O's impact on the railroad industry.
Bren Steele
My 4 and 5yr old loved it especially when they got to ride on Thomas. My 9 and 11yr old loved walking through the trains especially the one with the model train display.
Maria And Sam
**Before reading you should know that my ticket price was only $1 due to my visit occurring on Labor Day**
The B&O museum is a fantastic museum that is filled with awesome locomotives from the railroads history. Would highly recommend for any locomotive fan to take a visit while you're in Baltimore!
Scott Mahar
Loved it! Can't wait to come back next time!
Monne Davis
Gorgeous place to hold events. Visiting the museum and gift shop are a great family activity.
Michelle Mosher
Lots of history here! Great displays and a ton of information!
Janna Ellis (Weyrcat)
Really great Railroad museum. We came on a special event day (to see Thomas the Tank Engine) so we didn't get to see half the museum; there's so much to see! The roundhouse is amazing!!
Esther Martin
The museum was clean and will maintained! The staff was SUPER friendly and kind. They had a lot of trains to see. The roundhouse is beautiful! There was a kids section with toy trains, books, and games. 3/4 of the kids rides outside were shut down some with the outdoor model train garden. We took the 25 minute train ride. The ride itself was nice and fun for our kids who have not been on a train before. The view from that train ride was not what i was expecting. It was not scenic at all. Overall it was a nice visit!
Sweetest Suite Cake Company
It was fun and education. The staff was professional, friendly and very helpful. The museum was clean and well maintained. It is family friendly, ample parking, and the onsite cafe was nice for a quick bite to eat.
Kira Yeary
Took my 2 girls at the end of Sept and had a great time. They are 2 & 4. We were able to completely social distance because of Covid concerns even though it was a Saturday. My girls especially loved the rides outside. Highly recommend. Plenty of space for a stroller, benches and picnic tables for lunches outside while there with kids. We really enjoyed ourselves.
Zachary Coyle
We did the polar express and the event was great. The museum was wonderful as well.
Phil Detweiler
I'm not a train expert but have a casual interest in things like this and have been to several other railroad museums including those in Scranton and in Strasburg. This location has a tremendous amount of rolling stock and all of it is organized in a way that promotes learning and interest. Was a pleasant 20-minute walk from the inner harbor hotel where we stayed and I would definitely recommend if you're interested in this sort of thing.
Michael Borgos
Rode on the Polar Express for Christmasthis year, 2022. My 3 year old son loved it! The waiters were full of enery for the show. The hot chocolate was cold and that was only disappointment. Great family time though
William K Bolan - CapitolDistrictRailfan96
The money I paid to go into the museum is very well worth it and I got my worth. What I received was a newfound love and greater education on the history of the b&o and the b&o's rolling stock and other locomotives/rolling stock in their collection. Its something about that museum that I just cannot stay away from it, and that is a good thing the way I see it! Okay maybe I obsess but so what. I'm going to join the mission of the B&O Railroad Museum to help keep the history alive and tell the stories!
Mike Plowcha
A really unique experience to see early US railroad locomotives inside a beautiful functioning roundhouse. Can't wait to go back and see even more of it, as there are multiple buildings and many sections of track to go through.
Ted B
We come to the Railroad during the reciprocity with the Maryland Zoo in January and February. Trains are just plain fun! The train ride now stops at the Baltimore Police Mounted unit stables.... and the horses are awesome!
Keep up the great work B&O!
David Gold
Plentiful insite parking. Trains everywhere. 22 bay roundhouse.
4th visit. Don't plan to spend less than 3 hours to see it all. Model layout inside a passenger car is nice.
Onsite snack bar and dining area is lame.... bring your own. Surrounding area is somewhat unsafe.
Staff is very friendly.
1 mile train ride is weak... do it... but there's no history or commentary... missed opportunity.
Scott Macdonald
Love the railroad museum going back to childhood. Every kid should visit, where manufacturing meets technology 19th century. They need your support, be a member? I am!!! Parking is fenced in. During normal working hours the parking lot is adequate for visitors. Big events you might be on the street out front! Update December 2022
Shame museum appears to forget
Goal should be to make more customers into members.
Ending of Breakfast with Santa mistake. Opportunity to make new members lost.I went to zoo instead and have not renewed my annual membership yet. I have had for decades! Big donors should ask for detailed results of fund raising.
I saw one new exhibit that appeared more toward federal funding than organic fund raising.
The all genders bathrooms are not liked by users. I ASKED while in bathroom!
Wish museum well but hopefully they take close look at themselves!
Jock McClees
Wonderful museum. Even though we are past the age of trains, they are still impressive. Baltimore and this museum were the beginning of trains in the US. The round house where trains were turned around is a magnificent building. There are train engines here from the very earliest days when it looked like a boiler on a cart. The earliest passenger cars look more like converted stage coaches. There are a number of trains from the Civil War era and more.
You can also take a ride on an old train if you schedule it. Kids will love that and also being able to go on the old trains. Some you can walk through and others you can only look at.
Ask them to tell you the story about when half the roof collapsed when we had 4 feet of snow a few years back. The place looks better than ever. The staff is wonderful and is very knowledgeable.
They held an art competition for local artists to paint the trains and some picturesque train stations in the area. Some of the photos reflect that.
Billy Fenyes
I definitely recommend the B&O Railroad Museum. Took the family today. (2 year old and a baby in a stroller) There are so many trains and there is so much space to run around that my 2 year old didn't know what to do with himself. Just being able to look at the massive engines was awesome but you could go in some of them as well.
There's also a lot of model trains set up everywhere, kids creation station, carousel and an outdoor play area with picnic tables.
Staff was friendly and the museum is clean and easy to navigate, even with a stroller.
Dacia Balch
Standing next and looking up at giant engines humbles everyone. Diverse displays from multiple perspectives offers engagement for guests - especially the curious. Highly recommend!
Trevin Charity
Really nice museum with many high quality and well maintained displays. Adding on to your ticket for the train ride is cool and worth it as well. First class tickets will get you in a more comfortable car with a snack and beverage, but it's $10 versus $3 for a ride in the regular car. Overall, the museum is definitely worth a visit!
Kelsey Barrion
Great museum with so many different types of locomotives and cars. It's really amazing to see all of the ones that have been restored and kept, as well as the historic Roundhouse. I wish they had a few more activities for kids, but there's really a ton of things to see. My son loves the HO scale displays, and the outdoor model trains.
Megan Daughtrey
We were in the area for a quick family getaway and found this. I'm so glad we did! My son has autism and is obsessed with trains. The price was fair and train ride was awesome. Just wish it was longer but we were still happy with it. Next time we are back in the area we will definitely go back!
Chris Denton
Nice little museum to check out. A lot of locomotives to see and train cars. Extremely hot in the buildings when I visited in the summer. But still well worth the trip to check it out while I was visiting Washington DC
Lance Mintle
Very cool place to look at many trains. We got her close to closing time so had to hurry but could have easily sent another hour here.
Stephanie Account
Wow! We honestly did this on a whim. How lucky we are! We walked into their New Year's celebration which was lovely. Even without that, the wealth of information, trains cars to touch and be in and the snack area that sold local beer was well worth the visit. Beautiful museum, wonderful trip!
Keli
This place was amazing and had great history stories to go along with it. They have plenty of trains to view and even trains that you can walk on. A nice kids play area. We also went on a train ride and the conductors were great. I was shocked to see how clean their restrooms are and that they have a nursing station set aside for nursing mothers. Great experience and we will definitely be back.
Kelsey Fabiani
Took our train obsessed son here last week and he was in heaven and I was amazed at how beautiful the inside of the roundhouse was. Everything was immaculate, informative, and welcoming. They give you a cool paper for your child to find stamps around the museum and get a small prize at the end. Tons of kids activities indoors, play area outside with carousel. We had a really nice time.
Nicole Taylor
We had so much fun!! Between the trains, being able to get on most of them and explore and the train history museum with the history of clocks and communication we were never bored. There's plenty to do inside and outside as well. Perfect family day
Justice Moh
Might be the only place you can see such a variety of real trains used in the US. You can go in and touch many aspects but certain parts of the trains are sectioned off for preservstion.
B&O museum has 1 of 2 surviving Allegheny (1940s). The most powerful American trains ever built. They also have 1 of 3 surviving "bride coach(s)" from 1830s.
It's got a nice Roundhouse. It's a massive space which let's you see the progression of trains in US specifically those part of the B&O line history, from early horse drawn on rail cars and subsequent evolution throughout the years.
Model train and clock sections are smaller but worth stopping to better understand locomotive history. There's even a fun model train city built inside a train car!
It's notable they included the history of segregation on the rails and civil rights era changes. Their collection includes a Pullman Porter uniform worn by the all black kitchen staff.
The Cafe is rather limited as is the gift shop. But, those aren't the reasons you would go to the museum.
They do have sections for younger preschool, kindergarten age kids to play in a smaller indoor space to keep them busy. They also have a birthday party car!
I would be fun to have the Cafe in an actual Cafe car of one of the trains, but they don't.

The cost to see the antique trains was quite fun. Interesting for Adults and Children. Lived walking the yard seeing so many different types of trains over the centuries.
roody morales
B & O is a gem in Baltimore. Great rail museum with an impressive roundhouse with an excellent collection of steam engines, a few diesel engins too. A good place to learn about our bygone infrastructure and the evolution of rail art and technology.
Jenna Fitz
Beautiful museum. We have gone several times for their polar express and ride with Thomas. My kids love it and there is so much to do. They have many old trains for the kids to explore as well as a kids section. They always have different events going on. If you love trains this place is a must see!
George Johnson
Very cool history to be found here!!! John was my personal tour guide!! Thank you sir!!! I also met Craig the conductor and JJ who helped out with the Pumpkin patch train ride!!!
Khristine Shifflett
Loved it for the polar express it was very family friendly with lots of fun
Patty Rhee
The B&O Railroad Museum is awesome. It's fun and interactive. They have things to do and see for all ages. The train ride was awesome as well. The staff is great, they're friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place. I'm not sure if there is a place to eat inside, but I do know there are snacks and beverages served on the train, a gift shop, and a good amount of bathrooms as well.
Ed Kapuscinski
One of the best railroad museums in the country. It has a very significant and well curated collection and provides great interpretation around it.
Plus they have the only currently restored operable Conrail locomotive in the world.
Kristen Bishel Browne
We had a wonderful visit to the B&O Train Museum. We are Maryland Zoo members, so we used the reciprocal special for this month to visit the train museum for free! My son will be 2 next month and he loved the toddler play area and the carousel ride! We are looking forward to future visits!
Jenne Holmes
Plan on spending the day, take the tours and learn more about trains than you ever wanted to know. ( I mean that in a good way.) Loved my 5 hours there today explore the gilded age of train travel.
Arun
Lots of fun things to do with the kids. Kids loved seeing the different trains and also it was fascinating for adults to see the old trains and carriages and how we have evolved from these huge machines to tiny sleek machines. Loved the Allegheny engine and how massive it was. Lots of activities for the kids to explore about trains too. There was a short train ride too that the kids loved it.
t b
Comprehensive collection in a beautiful building, and a great piece of US history. BUT, too much 'look' and not enough 'touch'. If you aren't a knowledgable train aficionado then the main displays are sorely lacking in context and information, and it all just blurs together. The $2 train ride (only once per day) is worth the cost, but appears to have last been cleaned in the steam-engine era. Smithsonian model train collection, dining car history, and B&O historical information all well done. Free parking onsite.
Bowen Butler (The Whitaker Review)
Be sure to be there by 3pm or a tour is not possible. However, you can still check out the wide range of rail cars and engines outside the museum. There are a couple centuries of cars represented and from a couple different lines B&O, C&O, Maryland and Phillidelphia.
It looks as though the cars are traded out from time to time in order for others to be seen.
Bernie Huang
My son’s favorite museum! A rich and informative collection of the history. We were lucky to visit the museum to join the turntable show and had a lot of fun. They should definitely put more turntable show on their schedule, that’s not something you will normally see in other places.
Matthew M
Great layout with a very impressive main building. The one-mile train track is a slow and easy guided tour - sit on the right-side (related to the direction you first travel) of the train for the best view.
Brian Lawson
I had a great time bringing family on a cold Saturday.
We learned a lot. Great for celebrating Black history month, too.
Lyle Stanford
The B&O Railroad Museum has a treasure trove of railroad history. Their collection is immense and in wonderful restored condition. You could spend hours there looking at every locomotive. It's amazing how well they've restored everything, even after the roundhouse roof collapse. Great experience all around!
santhosh kumar
Good place for train lovers. Learnt about history of trains. Has a very small gift shop. They can earn revenue if they had more items.
Gibs
Anyone who has any interest in the history of railroads will love this place. We took a ride on the first tracks placed in the US!
David Sliwinski
I've loved the B&O museum since I was a child and still love being a member! Although very disappointed in no train club displays this year
James P
An interesting museum, specifically enjoyed the steam trains and "futuristic" trains of the 1940's. Lots to see and do, especially for children. Highly recommend paying this place a visit.
Ian Peters
Definitely a very cool museum to visit if you're interested in railroads/trains, especially steam engines. They have a large collection of steam engines throughout the museum to check out and see the evolution of these engineering marvels. The museum also does a great job detailing the history of railroads and society, particularly surrounding the Civil War and World War I (it should be noted that they are doing a special exhibition on WWI now).
Just as a side note, if you are more interested in diesel/electric engines (as I am), I think the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania may be a better fit...but I still would recommend checking out the B&O Museum. I easily spent 3 hours here and it was a great experience.
Makayla Diehl
Definitely loved seeing all of the history behind all of the different things they had , I just feel like 20 per adult is a lot considering it really isn’t that much to look at I definitely thought for the price there was going to be more to see.
Jaycee Campbell
This place was amazing. Went here for an event outside, but couldn't resist looking at everything on the inside. The trains and history is just amazing.
Michael “Mike” Huber
Went for the S scale train garden on Sat and Sun. Met some good people and joined the club that did the display that weekend. Tree in the center of the round house was nice so I snapped a couple shots. Kids were having fun seeing all the trains, pointing and running about in the open space of the round house.
James valentine
Amazing so well put together, take the train ride first class, grandkids and myself so enjoyed it there
WmSc0tt Cunn1ngham
Friendly staff very nicely curated trains and other memorabilia. Especially moving displays about the underground railroad.
B Boidy
Look for coupons online, but at Christmas time this is one of Baltimore’s best and affordable attractions. The holiday trains and $6 rides with Santa make adults and kids feel the spirit of the season. The roundhouse has been beautifully restored and highlights Baltimore’s railroad history. PARKING ONSITE TOO!
Anthony Powiliatis
I didn't have many expectations going in but I actually enjoyed this museum way more than I thought I would. The train ride was fun too although it was short and there wasn't a whole lot to see. After this visit, I think I'm totally into trains now...
Rich F
Nice place, full of history! The staff was pleasant and helpful. Train ride was around 15 to 20 minutes and there is the kiddie playground for the little ones to enjoy.
Elizabeth Bowers
I like when they have events for children to enjoy and have fun, but i don't like the prices, specially for people on disability, or social sercurity, social services. See we have bills to pay, if u don't have a lot of money it's hard. Plus i feel if you pay for an events the rides should be free, for children under like 10 yrs old, . I also feel that you shouldn't have to pay extra for the train ride, but other then that, they have some of the most amazing employees, like Patty Mills, Travis Harry, Ms. Irene, Mr. Imaganation man. And other voleenteers, plus the ladies in the cafe, Ms. Linda and her crew. They work for a nice cratering company. One of my neighbors works part time for them. I hope you will take the experience, and go there with your children they even have activities for all children at heart. They have atory time, during Thomas the train they have a activity tent with tattoos, macroni necklace, ride toys tent, bubbles area, sometimes pet zoo, u can buy pit beef, or ham, pretzels, and other good foods, they have a Thomas the train buying center, then they have polor express, they have Christmas events, the pictures are of my grandchildren and my best friend 's great niece, & nephew. This day my granddaughternwas not feeling to good, ahe sleep most of thw time. But she enjoyed it when she was awake. They love going during the aummer events. They also have amazing birthday partys there to. So i want tomsay thank you B&O railroad, i alao want to thank you for letting me help out there during the thomas events, just to see the smile on the children faces, they joy they have, plus when they are crying you help to put a smile on thier faces and help their parents. Thank you from Elizabeth ( jeannie ) Bowers, Brooklyn & Jj, plus this year i will bring my other grandchildren so they can experience the fun, joy of the railroad, my youngeat grandaon loves exploring. And my oldeat granddaughter is in the grade to learn about our history.
Chelsea Bussey
It was closed today on the inside, but the guard was nice enough to still let us look at the trains. I had no idea that the 1976 Freedom Train was here. My dad lived in New Orleans was 17 when he go a job traveling around the country. He had lost all his photos during Katrina.
Elizabeth Fowler
Great family friendly place to take the kids or just visit, lots of interesting collections full of fascinating history!
J Sheridan McClees
Who doesn't love trains? The museum is a fun place with a lot of great information about the history of trains. They have some of the earliest trains built in the us. One is the Tom Thumb which is tiny. Some of the early railroad cars they have look more like a stage coach than a train car. There is a lot of in about trains during the Civil War period. You can go on a number of trains. The engine in one of the pictures was used in the movie the Wild Wild West with Will Smith. At times you can also take a train ride on an old train.
Smart Kitty
I enjoyed learning about the different trains there very good customer service clean bathrooms.
Missie Mills Lopez
Beautiful museum, and super kid-friendly! We attended a birthday party today and were really impressed with everything. There’s a kids playground outside, small carousel ride, and large indoor section that’s just for little kids. They really thought out the kids area- there are train tables, Legos, a coloring area, a well-stocked bookshelf, mini train house, and more. My children played happily there, and we would have stayed longer except it was just so darn hot. We will return when it’s cold outside. The birthday party included a train ride that the kids loved. Great experience. The bathrooms in the main building had a chair and changing table outside of the handicap stall, and a step stool by the sink. So kid friendly!!
Amanda Fry
Iconic museum and site in Baltimore. Rich in history, interactive exhibits, 100% fun and intrigue for everyone. It brings the history of the railway in America to life.
Ilex Weaver
Came here on a whim due to my other plans with a friend falling through, was extremely glad I did. This place just freaking rocks; tons of trains, lots of chances to actually board a good chunk of them, great deal of history. Can't wait to check out out again.
Seth Setiadha
I enjoyed visiting the museum, love the trains
Nick Weimer
Super cool museum all about trains.
Alanna Graham
It's nice museum to bring you're children, if they like to do sensory activities or simply just want to play with the toy trains. However, not a fan of the gender neutral bathrooms.
D Henley
Great museum for a train lover. Sometimes they have Thomas the Tank Engine shows, which are always a blast. The surrounding neighborhood isn't the best, but the museum is surrounded by a fence. There is a little store on site, where you can buy souvenirs.
All in all, a nice experience for us.
Eris Knox
Great museum, the round house is beautiful and filled with a wide array of various rail cars and locomotives.
Edward Cotton
Im coming back the first Tuesday of the month to pay half price to take the inside tour. $18 to look at trains in the building when I can look at trains for free in the parking lot is a bit much.
Charles Pratt Jr
Me & My Family Had So Much Fun!!!!!
Jayson B
Local history, and the roundhouse contains an amazing assortment of steam and early electric trains from small to giant in great condition.
R Luky
Very nice place for kids and adults. Sadly the train was not operating from Feb to March.
Nicholas Rebbert
Family friendly and plenty to do and see. My three year old son loved it!
Nicole Searfoss
Always loved going to the B&O. Haven't been in years, finally had a grandbaby and went back. It was just as I remembered! The only thing I was uncomfortable with this time was the gender neutral bathrooms. I think it would be fine if it was one stall, but it is both bathrooms that were originally Male and female. It made me feel uncomfortable, but I guess this is something we all need to adjust to.
micheal fabrizio
Go back in time. Extremely knowledgeable staff . Kids at the front welcome the guests and visitors. History Looms All Around Every Engine Car and Caboose $@?#
Michael Humes
This is a hidden gem in Baltimore! Its really cool if you like history or mechanical stuff! Took me 8 years to get here but it was very much worth it!
Ray Buckley
Great place for getting about the history of trains. There were a lot of interactive exhibits. Lots of fun for children, but entertaining for adults too! Accommodating staff, don't forget to ask questions. These people know everything about trains.
Deb G
Our 6 and 5 year olds loved it. There's a fabulous children's section and outdoor rides.
Aravind Thyagarajan
Excellent museum! They have really taken utmost care to preserve all the artifacts
Kimberly Delson
It was a great experience coming here during my visit and getting to learn a little history and view the trains.
Suellen Dawson
If you like trains, you must go. An amazing find a very close to Camden Yards, but I recommend driving. There is ample parking
Z
A little expensive at $20 a head but a little boys dream come true. Having a 3 year old really brought the magic of a train station to life for him. My son walked in an was speechless. It was perfect for the 15 degree weekend we had. They offered free admission for the furloughed employees which I thought was very nice indeed. They have plenty of onsite parking which I was surprised of since it was in downtown Baltimore. I was also surprised at how much history was available around the B&O rail road as well as the information for kids and adults alike. There was plenty to keep all ages entertained and even 4 or 5 wooden train tables set up in a kids area where the kids could play with Thomas the train sets. Needless to say, if you need something to do this is definitely a must if you have a toddler into trains. Worth every penny for sure. It was beautiful!
Heleen Raes
This is a great museum for every train fan, they have a lot of authentic locomotives and train carts that are preserved wonderfully. The signs are very informative as well and the staff is happy to help. It is quite expensive though, $20 for an adults and not a lot of discounts.
Samuel Chambers
Even big boys (men) love this place/ Conveniently located downtown, with ample on-site free parking. Displays both on the outside and inside of a beautifully maintained roundhouse with turntable. Paid train ride is a real hit, particularly with children. Food available on site.
T B
The B&O Railroad Museum is on the oldest commercial track in the country and the largest collection of rolling stock. If that weren’t enough to geek out on, it has tons of activities for those less fan-boy about trains.
Parking is plentiful and free. Facilities are clean and unisex (kinda weird at first, but you get used to it).
Donald Smead
One of the Best Museums I've been to. Loved seeing the history and huge Train engines.
Benjamin Brown
We came here cause my daughter loves trains, and this is the perfect place for that. Not only can you see trains, but there's a ton of interaction available as well as education. And they have special events, such as the visit of Thomas the Tank Engine, which was a very fun event. I highly recommend this museum for any age
andrew harte
Great train museum, lots of train cars, model trains etc, can even take a ride on the train...I didnt have time to do that
Nick Van Wagenen
We went on veterans day so it was free but even if I had to pay the $20 for admission it was well worth it
Zhuohong Xie
We went here for the Day out with Thomas. This is an event that features the Thomas the train engine and ride, photo, bouncing castle, crafting, and little train ride etc., Along with the regular train exhibit shown at the B&O Museum. Our children are not that into trains but still had some fun onsite. The gift store featuring Thomas the train (separate from the main museum store) was excellent. There were many Thomas items. The highlight is that our purchase - Thomas water bottle was dropped on the floor the next day, and the store was willing to ship a new one to our address. Thanks and definitely a nice customer service!
Evelyn Moore
Great museum. Lots of equipment. You can go into several of the cars. Nice little train ride available for additional $3! And they stop so you can meet the mounted police horses. Definitely recommend for young & old.
MB Umucspring2016
Love this place! Thomas the train was a great outting for the kids. Great local history on how locomotives shaped America.
H David Pollock
Ride the train, see the police horses, check out all the different trains from different times and wear a mask!
Seriously good place to bring a family.
Susan Spann
Took our grandsons who were visiting from Wisconsin. They really wanted to do the train ride. Because there were school tours, we couldn't. They should let you know on the website that if there are tours, the public can't ride the trains. We would have gone a different day. They need more active attractions for the kids.
Roudy Neree
Awesome experience with my family. We enjoyed B&O Railroad Museum in Charm City! Choo-choo!!!!! All Aboard to West Baltimore! Peace and Love!!!!
Margaret Buxton
We took our 3 grandchildren ages 5, 8, and 10. The museum was beautifully decorated for Christmas. There were plenty of photo opportunities. The kids enjoyed making ornaments and exploring the train exhibits in 2 buildings. We had a wonderful time! This one visit was worth the grandparent membership fee.
Natalie L
Brought the kiddos here since it was free in February with our zoo membership. It was really cool. Lots of interactive areas and places to explore. There are multiple trains you can go inside. The outside looks nice too, but it was cold and rainy so we didn't go out there. My kids also loved the indoor merry go round. I enjoyed my self alot here and would consider taking out of town guests here.
Ian Deller
Great museum! It tells interesting historical stories about the local area as well as the nation. Has hands on exhibits for the kids.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
Make sure to explore the outside areas too. There's model train setups as well as more modern trains to see.
Parking was easy and convenient in their dedicated secured parking lot.
Jason Goodling
If your a history buff then it will be nice. But its amazing to see the detail in the old trains you don't see that anymore
Monique Gainer
This place is so worth the price. It has exhibits to touch and you can even take a short train ride out to the 1 mile stone. *Bring your EBT Card, if you have one for a family discount*
Camera Person
Very good place to take out of towners or family, and the trains are beautiful.
Jennifer Hartis
We went on Sensory Sunday with our autistic son. The staff was very patient, friendly and understanding of keeping the noise at a minimum. We will definitely be back for the next Sensory Sunday in August. It was a great, welcoming program.
Zaydet Tlatenchi
My son loves trains! So this was a this was a great experience for him. There was so much history on trains. We will definitely visit again.
Debbie Trencher
So many trains to see! A group of us (all adults) spent an easy 3 hours there. Definitely recommend it. You get to board old trains too.
Kris
This place is amazing. The roundhouse is stunning and the collection they have is incredibly diverse and well maintained. Train ride was fun.
Tracy
Amazing museum! Loved seeing the trains and stage coaches. The walk thru trains were the best! I would have given 5 stars but a few things weren't operational, including the train garden. The onsight parking was free and plentiful!
Sandra Hyland
Beautiful trains with excellent descriptions of each one. You can get up close and see the workmanship change with each new technology.
Alicia Kauffman
Well worth the money. The round house has a lot of locomotives to check out. The model train display is also very cool. It is of the city of Baltimore. We took a free tour and were able to learn a lot of fun details.
Psalm51_Ten
This was my second time visiting the B&O Railroad Museum with my toddler. The first time was for A Day Out with Thomas. This time was for the Polar Express. Both events were great, but this last event was magical. They really brought one of our favorite Christmas movies to life. The attention to detail and the great customer service was greatly appreciated. We have considered making it an annual tradition. Thank you for such a special time! Highly recommended.
Amanda Lazon
Brought my mom & young son (3) he absolutely loves trains! They have a area for younger children, it's pretty nice. You can also go & look inside some of the trains which is really interesting.
Yash Mathur
Fun when there was Thomas the tank engine event. My son had fun riding Thomas train. Not sure if it is as fun independent of the event or not. The cost of museum entry is for $20.00.
Bob Adams Jr.
Polar Express experience at the railroad museum was a fun train ride with cookies at hot chocolate
Alexis Schmidt
Very nice place to visit. Plenty of exhibits and tons of activities to sate young and old visitors. Also I was so pleased to see that they have gender neutral bathrooms.
Jen Lu
Super fun place. We had a holiday party there. The staff were wonderful and had some fun things like a carousel and crafts for kids!
Danny Rodriguez
Very interesting and fun for the kids, well worth the visit, free parking at the museum.
Aaron Wilson
A nice surprise in Baltimore. We were looking for something extra to do and ran across this museum. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours. Being able to see some of the locomotives up close was amazing!
Linith Paltrow
The museum is well cared for with great exhibits. The different trains are really cool to see. There are the huge indoor areas and plenty to do outside. There is a cafe with hot dogs, pretzels and snack style food. There is a playground area for the kids outside. There were 2 stations for activities for children with great staff. There is a book area and train table with toy trains for the kids to play. We rode the train which was decked out for the holidays and it was a blast! Definitely will be going back and I highly recommend it. There is private parking for museum guests that is free.
Hector José Medina Gómez
We're members. That tells you how much we enjoy the museum.
Not every institution in the US can claim to host such an array of artifacts that contributed so greatly to the REAL "building of America".
In many ways B&O (and later the succeeding companies that now form CSX) have been the "locomotives" (pun intended) for driving the making of our culture.
Yes this museum is mostly dedicated to the "Steel, Iron & Wood" that is left over from those times, but it's a good starting point for youngsters and adults alike to probe further into how America has built its national identity, how society has changed, and how modern human values and rights have evolved in our psyche.
Last weekend B&O celebrated its 195 anniversary.
If you have the chance don't miss, and do support, this museum.
Margaret Carte
Fun place to visit!
Lawrence Daniels
A true gem whether you're a train fan or just a casual visitor. The array of engines from the earliest steam driven to the modern diesels is jaw-dropping. Since the rail system played a key role in the development of our country, anyone interested in American history will find hours of pleasure walking among and climbing on the mammoth locomotives on display. Displays are very kid friendly.
William Grigsby
We had a grand time bringing my grandson to have a day out with Thomas. The steam engines are beyond beautiful and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Tom Wimsatt
If you like trains and history, this is the place to go in Baltimore. Steeped in the history of the beginning of railroading in America, this is a great place to start an adventure. It would take more than a day to fully explore this place. Come when the trains are running and get a view of the first miles of rail laid in the country.
Events tend to be geared for the younger set but there are plenty of things to see and do for adults. Thomas the Tank Engine visits tend to be mobbed; so, plan accordingly.
Rachel R
My four year old is a huge fan. Wasn’t too crowded but masking was only so so, especially on the train ride.
Dave Bresser
Great experience. We took our 18-month old here and he loved it too.
Andie Smith
Can we say such a wonderful christmas experiene. A++
Benjamin Jancewicz
The B&O railroad museum was expertly paste, in my opinion.
When you enter the building in the morning, there’s just enough time to browse around the gift shop, enter the miniatures section, and as you are getting towards the section with the time table, you were then led out into the round house.
Browsing around the round house takes almost exactly the amount of time that you would need before the train ride starts.
The train ride is a welcome reprieve right in the middle of the museum tour, and then it is off to the outdoor section of the museum, complete with other miniatures and things for kids to do.
Once that is done, you can visit the walk-through cars off to the left, and the storage room stuffed with engines.
I highly recommend going on a Saturday morning, spending a good portion of the morning and early afternoon there, and then going to get a late lunch. It’s a wonderful experience.
They also have a program where parents with a SNAP or EBT card are able to get tickets for a drastically reduced price. Parents who are poor and struggling to make ends meet, should not be denied museums.
James Kenner
If you are a railfan you will really appreciate this museum. Great locomotives and nice tidbits of history throughout. Do wish the gift shop had a little bit more stuff but that's no problem
Senquasia Coleman
Lots of educational train exhibits. Loved the model railroad on the inside of the building. Wish the model tracks outside were working. My son was amazed at the Chessie System and the gift shop.
Ez Bmore
Love this place the cathedral ceilings are breathtaking trains awesome customer service unbelievable everybody had a smile and was pleasant and eager to help
Simon Reid
Tons of fun for all the family, I have never been a train guy but my son is, some of those machines are massive!
Yasmin Rosa
I was so excited to come to this museum during my travels, but it did not impress. It’s fairly small for the crazy expensive price
Merritt Dworkin
Loved all of the history and they have an AWESOME new Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 3-7 with grab and go foods, fresh produce, etc. Win!!
Lillian Cabel Pfister
Took our 3 year old here and he lost his mind!!! Very kid friendly, great staff, plenty of things to do.
Tiffany Edwards
My son and I visited for their annual Thomas and Friends exhibition and train ride. Absolute 5 stars!!!! ❤❤❤
Igor Shteynbuk
We've been going to the B&O Railroad Museum since my son was a baby. We love it.
Laura Lucito
My dad loves trains so when he came for a visit I couldn't help but to take him. He loved it. He turned into a kid again. Thank you
Tibor Handra
If in Baltimore, visit this museum!! Beautiful history, pleasant train drive with snacks, great employees. Walk down the memory lane of the American train!
Sneha H S
The museum has models of trains from across the years that help learn how the railways developed. Indoor, older models and outdoor, newer models made a great collection. The miniature models and galleries were stunning!
Emery Jakab
Great museum with a large collection of trains both indoor and outdoor.
Franklin H. Alden Jr.
$20 is a bit pricey, but if you're a railroad buff, this is a must visit museum. The roundhouse contains a world class collection of locomotive engines, and the rail yard sits at the actual birthplace of American Railroad history.
Stephen Young
Railroad lovers must see. On site food place has basic snacks and drinks. Can be a day long trip with family. Locals have bday parties there.
Elyse Horvath
It’s always fun to come here especially if you love trains! It’s a bit on the pricey side even the membership options are a bit much or else I’d go more often they Offer train rides as well
Sonsiray Newton
My son and grandson enjoyed themselves, I enjoyed watching them explore and do things together.
Rod Hobbs
A great tour of the restoration of no. 51 diesel Electric locomotive built in 1937. The restorer who ran the tour was very knowledgeable and was open to many questions.
Mark Brackett
Came with our granddaughter to ride the Polar Express! Great time.
khia Swearinger
Great Railroad Museum full of alot of awesome events throughout year.
Kate Long
Great museum, my two year old especially loved it. Probably would skip the train ride, although he enjoyed that as well. There were some interesting details but it took longer than it needed to and the rest of the museum was more interesting.
Scott A
I'm not a big train person, but this place is pretty cool. Great exhibits that tie in history of the U.S. along with trains. Plan at least a couple hours to see everything.
Brooks B
Loved all the beautiful trains here! The mile long train ride and stop to put horses was great. Planning to go back to see more!
Ashleigh Alonso-Rodriguez
Great place for a train lover. We even got to ride on the train. We went as a feildtrip and the kids loved it.
Michael Stanford
Great place to take your kids. Lots to see and do.
Eric Cataldi
Beautiful trains that all ages will enjoy. All different decades of trains to explore. Came here during the Thomas the train event. Make sure to eat before or wait till after, can be expensive.
Aaron Simms
Love museums and trains so you know I'm going to like this place. No nicely pit together exhibits. I was able to learn somethings about railroads. Definitely worth a visit. Kids may enjoy it too.
Eric Simms
The B&O Railroad Museum is a fun place for adults and kids, whether you're a true train aficionado or just have a passing interest in them.
The museum is open six hours a day, and I estimate you'd need at least two full days to really appreciate everything the museum has to offer. It's well worth the $20 adult price, and I look forward to returning.
G Saba (Emerald)
We’ve been visiting here occasionally for some years now. This place is fantastic! Definitely recommend their Sensory Sundays!!
Ms. B
My nephew had his 5th birthday party here and we had an amazing time. I was immersed in the photos of women who shaped the B&O Railroad during WWII. I definitely recommend this excellent museum. This is an excellent opportunity to educate students during any birthday party, holiday celebration or event.
Carlos del Valle
A marvel of and a monument to the Industrial Age; a must-see full of awe-inspiring machinery, history, and nostalgia.
Susan C
The B&O Railroad Museum hold the oldest and most comprehensive American railroad collections in the world. The museum is a living history of men, women and trains and inventions that shaped our lives. The museum makes history fun and engaging.
Chandra Sanchez
I enjoyed the train ride, overall great experience very educational.
L O
Support this museum. A lot a great equipment, but it they need funds to refurbish them. Only problem is they don’t have enough space to display everything they have. Difficult to take pictures of the equipment outside. The museum itself was clean and the staff great. I would highly recommend this museum for the true railroad enthusiast.
Melody Church
We had so much fun going here their wizard and witches set up for Halloween was great!
ViktorCharlie 15
Best railroad museum I've been to, there are engines you can get in and get a real feel on how the working conditions were. Awesome to see some of the engines that I was in love with as a child. Definitely suggest this, there is a lot there even for the non railroad enthusiasts.
Zale Tabakman
Got to love it.
Lots to see and direct.
We went on a weekday and it was really quiet. We took a 5 year old, surprisingly it wasn't as much fun as I would have expected. It was a little too overwhelming I think. Too many trains. I think 8 would be better. But there were lots for him to like.
Kyle Stentiford
Amazing place for kids, train enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates history.
Wyatt
Took my kids here before an Orioles game a few years back. It's an excellent museum, and if you love trains you will not be disappointed. Truly an amazing experience.
Michael innamorato
Was actually so much more fun and awesome then I thought it would be, you get to stand in super old trains and walk inside
Lisa Smith
This is a place where you can gain a lot history! Great art exhibits!
DJ Reimel
Very cool and informative, slightly lack luster and zero ac. Except in the gift shop.
Nikhil Patel
great train museum, has a really cool roundhouse with trains from the old days .. our 3 year old loved the model train going thru the little city .. there is also a train ride (extra money) but wouldn’t recommend it because the only cool thing to see were the police horses up close and personal.
Darlene Carrigan
Love the B&O. We drive by it 5 days a week. And each day my grandson asks can we go? He loves the car with the train garden in it. There's a refrigeratored one that's also pretty awesome on a hot day. One car has a story or video usually playing. They had a carousel but when we went August 23 it wasn't there. The train ride looked like it was closed up for the winter. Was really surprised and disappointed. I'd say because of covid but we went at the end of June and they were both running. There was only us and a guy with his daughter there. They sat both kids apart on the rides. The person running the rides was following safety guidelines. It's never crowded. Which is a plus. You can take your time and look and read.
Christa Gagliano
Not only is this a great museum, but the staff here is awesome- knowledgeable, friendly and a pleasure to talk to. Take the train ride and pay a few bucks extra for the first class option. It’s an unexpected treat.
Stefan Svilich
Great adventure. My daughter has a bit of a engineering bent and loved it. The only reason I don’t give it five stars is that the neighborhood is a bit sporting. On my first trip, a Baltimore SWAT team performed a no-knock entry on a house about two blocks away from the museum as I was driving in. Park in the secure areas. Get out before the sun goes down and it will be a great family adventure.
Walt Nicholson
This is a must for the train fanatics in your life. The museum houses a massive selection of both old and relatively new trains. The highlight is the Roundhouse and the selection of steam locomotives. But, additionally there are a couple of amazing miniature train exhibits at the car barn has some of the most amazing engines around.
Harmony Carter
A day out with Thomas was a lot of fun for all my kids. The thomas ride was pretty lame but only because you couldn't here the story and the train itself was pretty dirty. The scenery on the ride wasn't too great either. The museum was beautiful though and had really gorgeous restorations of the trains.
jermaine pickett
The Thomas the train event was great! All of the old trains and museum history is great too for train and history lovers
Michael Gelman
Fantastic place if you like trains and history. Makes sure you take the time to go through all the exhibits in the shop building and built into the train cars on Platform 1. Cafe is minimal but friendly
steve lovett
Great if you like trains. Great for kids. And a train ride.
James V
There's so many new exhibits and there's more to come in the future... There's always something to learn when visiting the B&O Railroad museum...it's a good place to take the kids and also a good experience for the adults too...
Robert Price
I can only give it a 3, because a special event on that day meant that we couldn't see the museum. They did let us tour the yard though. It was pretty neat.
Tanay Adenwala
Absolutely amazing and beautiful place. Learned a lot about the whole revolution of rail engines. They have nice little play areas for kids as well.
Renee Benner
The kid in me was overjoyed to have this experience. Amazing historians have preserved these gems and generously put them on display with access to the fine details. We had a pleasant time with extremely nice guides and people on site. 100% recommended visit!
George Whitfield
One of the best railway museums out there. Will definitely visit again
Alicia Lee
As a train lover and the parent of an even bigger train lover, visiting the B&O RRM is always a grand time. Great events, properly curated exhibits and careful staff and attention to ask the details and preservation. The true fun place for everyone of any age.
Randolph Roig
This is a wonderful museum and is not just for railroad enthusiasts. Allow at least 2 hours and know that there is an opportunity for a train ride around noon.
Colin Hubbard
My second time at the B&O Railroad Museum. This place doesn't disappoint. It's interesting at every corner. The history of the railroad in Maryland is presented beautifully and entertainingly. Fun location for children and adults. If you are in a hurry, you can do most of the exhibits in a little over an hour. If you are interested in seeing everything, make sure you arrive with at least 2 hours to spare.
Earl D. Karper, Sr.
Very nice museum with a lot of history that you can see, touch, and feel. The retake BAD past is it is SO EXPENSIVE to get in. I grew up in the area and I spent MANY hours there - The B&O Railroad felt that history belonged to the people and charge $0.00 FREE to get in. When the Chessie System took over, they started charging. Now the Smithsonian has turned it into a cash cow. BOO!!!
Miss Mrs
It was absolutely wonderful. They have it nicely done up for Christmas. The different varieties on trains and wagons were amazing. Can't wait to bring my grandson back.
Mahgrefteh
Took my kids to B and O yesterday. They had a great time. Staff were very nice and helpful. Very patient and informative for my son's hundreds of questions. We tried to get there by 1 to go on train ride. We came to late so missed it. @ the end kids had a great time anyway. It's a nice local non expensive day trip.
George Stephens (Gettinpaid)
If you love trains you owe it to yourself to go here, while you're at it take the whole family 👪
Diane Cowell
Excellent place to visit and have an event. The pavilion is spacious and everyone will definitely have a wonderful time.
Henry Awad
Awesome place to take kids of all ages that love trains. The museum has a good amount of historic trains from the first railroad line in the US. Make sure to visit both buildings, the outdoor train display including the one in the parking lot. Plan a trip during mid-day to catch a ride on the train (separate tickets which are available on a first come first serve basis).
karla balch-reno
Such a wonderful place to visit. My nephew loves trains and has always enjoyed coming here. The kids area with the train tables is always fun for him. He also loves the model trains (one is outside and another is inside one of the train cars). The volunteers here are wonderful and very helpful and informative. Such a fabulous place to visit and I'm sure we will be back.
C W
Great Museum and very reasonably priced admission.
Bklyn-55
One of the best locomotive museum's in existence. You will learn everything from the early boiler machines to the sleek modern 1920's-80's engines. Absolutely fantastic curating, displays, and explanations. Highly recommended.
City High
Great museum! Great variety of different trains and my kids (10 and 3) loved children's area. It was worth the money and time spent. It was really interesting to learn about the different purposes of the trains they had and the history behind them. Overall, we all had an awesome time, we were the about 2 hours. I highly recommend the museum.
Karin Sorenson
Very clean and well cared for train museum. Our group felt safe and comfortable on the property. Wonderful display of engines and cars, lots of history. Kids were very engaged. Wish the price was reduced a bit during the off-season, we did not get a train ride (mid March). Would definitely go back, a fun experience and learned a lot.
Sara Cummings
Went to the day out with Thomas yesterday and my son loved it! We will definitely be back to explore all the great trains. One thing I absolutely did not like was the bathroom situation. I'm sorry but a place geared towards kids should have seperate bathrooms and a family one. I don't want to go into a bathroom like this and I am certainly not going to take my son in. I instead opted to use the porta pot. Hated it but definitely felt more comfortable since it was just me and my son in there. Please change this feature!
Jennifer Brocato
I love this place. My grandson is currently into trains and he enjoys himself each time we go. I bought a membership for two people (which happens to be a tax deductible donation!), and includes two months to the zoo for free! They have events every month to keep it interesting, and last Friday we rode Thomas the train. It's an enjoyable place to go with a little person. The parking is both ample and free. There is an outdoor playground, and they offer food for sale. You can even hold a birthday party or event there.
Kelli Malan Eimer
We spend so much time here! The train table is a huge draw for our young boy. Our membership has more than paid off.
Jonathan Collum
I've been here a few times and I can comfortably say it is one of the premier railway museums on the east coast if not nationally. They don't have a crazy amount of rolling stock but the pieces they and in particular those inside either the roundhouse or the north maintenance building have been beautifully restored. The none rail car exhibits are fantastic as well. The price of admission is pretty high but it certainly helps keep the buildings and exhibits all in great condition compared to some smaller places. One of the coolest features is a hand powered turn table in the middle of the roundhouse. Definitely worth a visit.
jeremiah quinn
Very cool place. Lots of trains to check out.
Jackie Hanson
Did not go inside because I needed some information for a geocaching tour, but i enjoyed my quick trip here! Sufficient history outside and I'm assuming there is a plethora inside as well!
Jessie Dickinson
We were there for the whole day on Saturday, so 10-4, and still wished that we had more time there. It was a great time, with super informative volunteers in the North Car Repair Shop and the Conductor in First Class on the train ride. Every member of the staff we encountered was friendly. The park was clean, the displays well organized, and a wonderful variety of train cars and memorabilia, and equipment on display. The signs were well thought out and very informative. A beautiful display and buildings. Great job!
luis Roman
The excitement in one picture for a toddler!
Brandon West
Great experience for families and kids. Highly recommend!
Greg Hall
The B&O is a great place and a lot of fun. My boys live being able to go inside old steam engines and pretend to drive them. There's a lot to see, both inside and outside.
Wayne Gordon
Amazing close-up look at burgeoning technology of the 19th and 20th century. Makes me wish we had a functional rail system. Any train buff should make a visit.
Sunil Dalal
Great exhibits worth noting in good shape. The 1.5 mile ride was exciting.
Grandchildren loved the experience. The most. Model train exhibits added to the fun.
Robert Graul
Excellent! Half a day can be spent there. I learned a lot.
Hector Chavez
Im in my late 40s and had allot of fun looking at the History of the B&O locomotive trains that were cleverly lined up in a row in the shape of a circle inside a beautiful building. Took lots of pictures. Train ride is 10 bucks for first class passengers in wich you sit in semi comfortable seats and get a bag of chips plus a drink. Regular seats is nearly 4 dollars a person no snacks or drinks but I think the seating is better to look out the windows. Train ride lasts nearly 20 minutes and only goes forward and backwards for a total distance of one mile. Never rode in a train car before so I thought it was fun. Kids will have fun so I recommend you bring your children. Train ride started at 1pm on a Sunday. Not sure about other times and days. Do not come to Baltimore on Easter Sunday. All the nice restaurants are closed on this day.
Toni Coleman
Exciting experience for adults and children. Senior volunteer guides were available to answer questions about the trains and stage coaches on display.
Tom Fenton
Great museum. Shame about the usual Baltimore traffic! There is free parking but the lot is on the small side and you are pretty far into Baltimore.
Brianna Green
It was an awesome experience for my 4 yr old she loved it
Jeremy Ginovsky
Good for the kids 👍 had a short train ride. Had a real life trained conductor engineer and train crew. I heard the radio transmissions as I am a railroader. Was impressed my son had a great time as well especially with Thomas pulling the train ride. Recommend for kids around 3 or above that can walk on their own enough to get around on the trains and see what's what
Michelle Daramy
This is a great museum. I became a member this year. I love the set up, the roundhouse, the trains, the outdoor play area, the educational information, the toddler play area... it’s easy to spend over an hour at this museum and want to stay longer. From the historical information, to collecting stamps to the train ride, there are several creative ways for children (and adults) to engage at this museum. Great museum.
Alan Kolski
Wow! Have always wanted to go, but never got around to it. I was surprised how much there is to see and how many railway locomotives and other rolling stock are there. I WILL be going back again to see more. So much to learn. And the train ride, while short, was enjoyable.
Devin Nowlin
Loved the museum... it is a must see if you are wanting to learn about the history of the railroad in America and how it shaped the country.
A C
This is a lot more fun and interesting than one may expect when making plans. We've gone a couple of times with the sun if engaging the kids. However, I think the adults in the group enjoy it even more. Insightful historical information, cool trains you can climb in and a playground outside all await. Free parking!
Jonathan Baker
Free parking and great setup for walking around to see the Maine trains. I spent about an hour walking around after a business trip in the area.
Arthur Sanders
It was a walk back in railroad history.
I highly recommend!!
Tonja D
Just got a second year of the membership. We get the family and friends pass because it’s a fun place to bring our friends and family from out of town when they come to visit! It’s great for all ages from toddler to seniors. ♥️ so much history and varying displays, plus the neat play area, train rides, the scavenger hunt thing (which they’re changing now), outdoor activities. we’ve been here as a family so many times and we aren’t bored yet. There so much to read and see, we’ve been taking it in bite size pieces each time we visit... and we always discover something new that we hadn’t really seen before, with each trip we make!
Emily Noonan Place
Day out with Thomas event was awesome for any 5 yo who loves the show- get there early and take a pic as you board.
Gabriel Luis
Super detailed museum about one of the first railroads of America. Perfect for kids and adults as well.
Cindy Poteet
Attended a wedding reception at the museum. It was beautiful!!
RANJIT G NAIR
Must visit while in Baltimore. Good for kids and adults alike.
Robert Poirier
Did the Polar Express ride was fun! Staff was awesome and very friendly!
Adam Cotton
Came for the polar express event. The initial skit was okay (the actor playing the dad didn’t know his lines lol) the test was very well executed. Highly recommend
Yury Herrera
We actually came for the Thomas the train event and had a blast! The museum was really nice and interactive there was alot to do for the kids. We brought ours, ages 1,2,&5. They all had so much fun and were sad to leave.
David Hardy
A fun experience with some great history on trains and the railway system through the years!
Mara C
Interesting history, quick hour or two.
Joshua Skelton
I really enjoy taking my 6 and 4 year old to B&O. It's a great way to spend time together as a family and learn a little about history. The reciprocal Zoo membership during January and February is a life and money saver. Highly recommend this for families and anyone interested in trains. But be sure to explore all the exhibits or you might miss the best ones hidden in the back.
Phoenix Batson
My 9 year old is crazy about trains, so I knew we had to visit while we were in Baltimore. He was completely thrilled. And the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Eddie Kang
This is a beautiful place hidden in Baltimore where a lot of people think it's bad city to visit. The Museum is not too far from downtown area to its east. However if you go a little farther to its west it can be a quite different scene. The museum has done a great job to display quite a few various locomotives from the past. It would be a nice place for the kids to learn our train and transportation development history.
Bonnie McCubbin
Thoroughly engaging for kids (toddlers and up) and adults. There's something for everyone. My kid loves the train tables to play, climbing in and out of the trains, and the space to run. And free parking is s bonus too! Last summer we did the reading program they offered and received a free train book.
William Marquardt
It is a very well maintained and beautiful facility. The people who are there to answer all questions were very knowledgeable about the content of the museum and answered all questions. It was a very enjoyable day.
Nina Bankova
I like it better in the spring. During the January-February time frame it felt neglected/overused (specifically the kids play area) and this is when we came the most in search for indoor activities. Also, there is a lot more to the museum than the main area with the turn table and my three years old loves these other places, too. The train ride is fun for the kids but the cars feel very dated (to adults at least). My son is in the 'all-about-trains' stage, so we will keep our membership at least one more year. It is well worth the money.
Jon Velapoldi
We all love this place. Large engines in your face, under a covered restored period roundhouse. Interesting chronology from early days of rail through the golden age of steam. The workshop has some beautiful streamlined engines and coaches that harken back to the golden age of rail. Very knowledgeable staff are always willing to help with questions, no matter how inane I may have. We've been annual members for the last 4 years in a row and plan on continuing.
I've always enjoyed the historical perspective of how the railway shaped and was shaped by events of the time.
David Chen
Unique museum with ample parking. My young kids, mother in law, and I all enjoyed the visit.
messafredo caranbriel
Loved it except the fact that they only had a vending machine for snacks. We thought there was food in the museum, it was late when we realized it was only open during weekends. :( But still the exhibits are amazing. My son spent the bulk of his time playing in the caboose.
Bryan Beyer
Great museum. Conveniently located in Baltimore, about ten minutes from downtown, with free on-site parking. The centerpiece of the museum is the historic roundhouse with beautifully restored steam locomotives and various rail cars. A number of kid-friendly exhibits, plenty of space to walk around. There are more rail cars you can walk through outside, including one with a massive HO-scale model setup, and there is a separate building that lets you sit in the cans of some of the largest steam locomotives ever built. The train excursion is great, but definitely not a necessity--plenty to do otherwise.
Connie Green
We took some friends visiting us from UK to this superb museum for their first visit. Due to time constraints (only 3 hours), we guys were unable to see the entire roundhouse exhibit: the evolution of steam locomotives. We did read all of the signs, and the explanations are very good for introducing the subject. The explanations related to the US Civil War were particularly noteworthy, and helped us both to greatly understand the importance of the B&O Railroad during that conflict. This part of the exhibit consumed most of our time, but it was very much worthwhile. The special exhibit on World War I railroaders is also excellent, but we only had enough time to quickly glance at it. Our wives, however, thought it was also superb. We saw many fathers present with their kids for fathers' day, and it appeared that all ages enjoyed the experience. We also enjoyed the gift shop, but didn't have the time to buy anything since they were in the process of closing for the day.
Mitishi
The customer service here was absolutely amazing. My husband and I were meeting our son's godparents at the Thomas the Train event today and were given excellent guidance with purchasing a ticket and even walked over to the gift shop. When my son's hat blew off, Claude retrieved it for him as we walked back to the entrance. We had to leave to get lunch while we waited for the other party. Upon our return, Jordan was helpful with making sure we found our friends and as a woman walked by, her baby dropped it's pacifier. Jordan returned it to the mom with a smile. It's important to highlight how much time and patience was given by Claude and Jordan because if it weren't for them, the day would have been a mess trying to figure out everything that my friends and I planned poorly.
The museum itself is impressive. The Thomas event was full of families and fun activities for everyone. Great experience!
David ACE Livingston
Great Museum! Great ride on The Polar Express
Megan Plant
The museum itself was very cool. We went for the polar express train ride and it is overpriced for what it is. We had fun but I spent over $200 for a family of 4.... the hot cocoa was nice, cookies a little hard, and an impatient santa that told me 3 times to "hurry" as I'm scrambling to get a photo of him with my kids. All in all, it was enjoyable but I wouldn't do it again
Fred Kurzweil
Absolutely wonderful. Great for the railroad fan. They have so many displays, and so much to do. They offer roundhouse doors and on certain days they actually bring a train in there. The parking can be somewhat rough but you can always take a cab, a lift, or a Uber. I would highly recommend to any railroad fan that this is a must-see.
C Sands
Great train museum! Accessibility exists for wheelchairs and strollers with ramps and automatic doors. Volunteers and staff are very knowledgeable about trains and are fun to swap stories with. Children 12 and under can pick up a "passport" at the front desk or gift shop to stamp at 10 locations around the museum. No strollers allowed on train ride.
Dawn Sabella
Worth the trip , especially if you love trains and/or history. Lots of unique information about the importance of trains throughout the growth of our country and even WWI and WWII. Don't be shy about talking to the volunteers there, they carry their own wealth of knowledge. We went as a party of 3 adults and spent the better part (or more) of 3hours.
Charae Thorpe
Attended the Thomas Tank Engine and Friends event with my children 4 and 2 and it was an absolute smash! they loved everything and I do feel like they learned a little bit about the history of railroads 😊 show me a gym in a highlight of the city I would recommend for sure! …
K Se
One of my favorite childhood places and an all around excellent museum. Love the feeling of nostalgia I get when walking through these doors. Beautiful museum, kind energy & wooden whistles that sound like a train when you blow on them as a souvenir! Great time for more attentive kids but fun for all. 🚂 …
Patrick S
Went for the Day out with Thomas event so they were a little packed. The exhibits are in good condition and there is plenty of space to roam. The children's area offers a number of activities to engage them as well as a scavenger hunt to complete. Favorite parts were walking through multiple trains and getting to interact with the engine cars.
Audrey Sainte
Great place to take kids, especially if they are railroad enthusiasts. I wish more trains were available to explore. The childrens' train rides are also closed for repair.
Benita L
This is a great place to visit. It was special to me after having played Monopoly for 30+ years and finally getting to see the property that I have purchased many times. I took one star because the restrooms are not separated. Sharing the bathroom with unknown men is a no for me and my daughters.
Jimmy B
Good and friendly.
A bit expensive (low value of our curancy).
Happy to look att the Allegheny, i now seen them both 😍 …
Kianna Richardson
Great place for kids who love trains!! Our son is 3 1/2 years old and he thorough enjoyed himself at the Day Out with Thomas and Friends!! There was so much for him to do!! He talked about it for days following the event! I would highly recommend this place!!
Allison Scott Berkheimer
We love it here and have a membership everyone who works there is super friendly, the kids area is great and of course the big trains are fascinating if you are into that! We did the north shop this time and my daughter loved sitting in the engine turning wheels and levers!
Derek Palmer
Great museum, I visit very often. Check out the new model railroad gallery they have! It's based on the city of Baltimore.
Tim Shank
Well worth the time for any rail history fan.
Blu Schultz
Beautiful place for a wedding!
Elizabeth Williams
We were there for a special event, Thomas the tank engine train ride... but we had full access to the museum. There were a lot of interactive displays. Lots of fun for children, but definitely interesting for adults too!
Faith Adeyemo
My son had safe fun. The Christmas decorations are beautiful.
Annie S
This is a must for kids, especially ones obsessed with trains! It gets crowded at special events, like in December, but it's worth a wait. For warmer times there is a small playground and a kid train outside. Have been here three times and have always left with the sense that we still haven't explored all. A special shout-out to the museum staff - I lost my hat in the museum, they found it and when I couldn't make it to Baltimore to pick it up, they actually mailed it to me! Thanks again, you are the best!
Jock McClees
Actually went to a business meeting there and not the museum. Went through the museum to get to it and spent some time on the way out. Haven't been there since my kids were small and since the roof collapsed when we had 4 feet of snow a few years back. They have done a great job restoring the place and there are a number of really interesting railroad engines and cars. Fun place to visit
L Reviewer
A well-kept museum that would be treasured by any railroad enthusiast. The kids there also seemed to enjoy themselves. For the adult wanting to check out another museum in the area with a passing interest in trains, the $20 ticket price may not be worth it. Perhaps the most entertaining exhibit one would find is watching the confusion at the all gender bathrooms. My wife and I each went into the “wrong” bathroom by accident as many others did. This led to averted eyes in the lobby outside, open gawks by some when entering, and embarrassing side comments from those leaving. It was clear that one bathroom lent itself to women and one to men as one restroom had a nursing area and the other urinals, but in order to understand this before entering, one had to spend some time looking closely at the “urinal” or “no urinal” picture/small wording sign underneath the larger printed ALL GENDER sign. Suffice to say, though the restrooms were open gender both in the signage and the patrons inside each room, from the awkward and surprised looks on many patrons who had thought they had “chosen” correctly, many would have preferred a to choice gender specific facilities. Just put a MEN and WOMEN sign up and let everybody keep what is in their pants to themselves, a doctor, or consenting adult.

Awesome place for kids. Very educational
Mr. MJ
Biggest Train Museum I've ever seen. Much more bigger than the Ogden Union Station museum.
Larry Beldner
Incredible! Huge collection of rail stock. Plenty of other lines as well as B&O, with wonderful pieces from the history of railways. Beautiful HO layout with multiple finely detailed working scenes with railyard, town, farms, all represented in a rail car!
Outside was a c.+50' square layout with 4 or 5 engines and cars moving past water features, tunnels, hills and detailed buildings. They have several Mikado engines, the heaviest, longest ever. The guides love and know their stock, reeling off facts and statistics. Also, totally ready for birthday parties, any age! Yes. It's good!
M MacFarland
A must for train enthusiasts. Less interesting since limited hands-on for those who are not spell bound by train engines.
Incredible number of well perserved engines. Lots to look at and basic information about each one. Unfortunately only a few are open to explore. Not a lot of activities for smaller children. A must for train enthusiasts.
The train ride is pretty short and doesn't go anywhere interesting.
Brandon Cunningham
Interesting and fun. Really detailed and a lot of reading, but fun if you like old trains.
Junxiao Shi
Unlike other rail museums, this museum has full size rail cars, in addition to miniature models. Some civil war era rail cars are arranged in a "roundhouse" building, with placards explaining their history.
Don't miss the rail cars in the parking lot. Some of them carried famous people such as President Lincoln. Visiting the parking lot portion is free.
They also offer a 1-mile train ride on the first mile of B&O Railroad. The ride is narrated, but there isn't much new information, and the old MARC train is in poor condition. I do not recommend this train ride.
Devon the Divine Solar Child
I enjoyed learning the history about the trains. The trains have awesome design . This is a great place to bring your family.
Melissa Cannon
Very great train museum with a large roundhouse full of trains. Big enough indoor section you could enjoy a day here in the winter. Tons of kids sections for lots of kid entertainment. There is a scavenger hunt you can pick up at the front desk and even turn in for a small prize at then end. There are also model train layouts my kids love. There are several trains you can go in and pretend to drive. One occasionally smokes and my kids actually think they are driving it!
Jonathan Fisher
The place has a lot going for it, but a few things missing. Definitely bring your own food; their frier is pretty much the only method of cooking at their pathetic cafe. They use old commuter cars to demo the first mile of rail around, which is cool, but easy to miss. The train collections have a few very large pieces that show how much power is in steam trains, and a few unique elements of history. For the toddlers, the play area is fairly large with lots of toys, at least for when there aren't a lot of toddlers (kids that small are just learning to share). We visited on a day they were demonstrating the turntable in the roundhouse. That was something to see: a single person rotating a whole train car by manpower!
Gail Miccio
An extraordinary experience! This museum has many hands-on displays, restored train cars, and engines. It is an appropriate destination for all ages!
David Tazartes
An amazing collection of old and very well-preserved steam trains dating as far back as 1830s. Ridiculously awesome famous trains in the Card Shop: the Hudson 490, and an Allegheny you can actually climb in. Kids' area with train tables. Beautiful setting in an old roundhouse. Train ride of appropriate length for easily bored children.
Allison Kingsland
Lots of fun things for the kids to do! We love coming on the first Tuesday of the month for Thrifty Tuesday! The staff are very helpful and willing to show us around, the kids can collect stamps from the 10 stamping stations, and get a free prize on their way out! I've also been here without kids for holiday events and it's a really lovely venue for work parties, etc!
Elaine S
My kids had fun riding the train and learning about the first railroad in America. We went during the Christmas time and The Museum was well decorated and lots of activities for kids. There were lots of train models.
Abe Byrd
Big place, lots to do and look at, lots of trains! My train-loving 2yo loved it!
Richard North Jr
My apologies, it turns out my GPS made me think that I had visited this place when in fact I had just been in the train station. So these five stars, while unearned personally, are based on reviews I read and guilt for leaving a relatively bad review because I had thought I had visited the museum and I actually only had a we've through a gift shop.
. Sorry about that, please visit the Railroad Museum everyone, the piano railroad was a very important part of American History Maryland history and so on. I'm very glad that it's there
Frank H
An avid interest in trains and recent history makes this museum worth the $20 per adult fee. They do give active duty military discounts which includes family. Very interesting museum with lots to explore. Make sure to check out the repair car shop located in a separate building. The surrounding neighborhood is sketchy but parking is gated and free!
Christyn Wallace
Experience was amazing. Went with a 2 year old and a 5 year old and they were both equally entertained, as were the adults. You MUST do the train ride, it was worth it. Didnt like that the 1st class tickets were, "white"...bruh, of all the colors to choose from!
Joe Ricci
More expensive than I thought it would be. The inside cars are fascinating, and come with much information so you can understand what they did and how they worked. Segregated cars were noted and you could see the difference in upholstery and even lighting. Interactive exhibits in other cars. The model trains were set up great. Outside you got to walk in some of the old cars and there were additional exhibits, and finally in the big building many locomotives spanning over a hundred plus years.
A. L. S.
This place was great and very fascinating. So much history and you can climb into some of these very old trains and sit where generations of old have sat. It's very cool.
Caroline Barstow
So well laid out! Great for adults and kids!
Rob Dickinson, MD
Truly a magnificent museum for train buffs and everyone else. Well maintained and has a short ride on a restored 1950's passenger train. The kids will love it!
Johnny Wen
We had no idea this place existed. My 3yo son absolutely loved looking at all the trains in the roundhouse and out front in the parking lot. We went during the Thomas the Train event where they had extra events outside and the carousal was free to ride. Look for the model train setup outside in the back area, and the wooden train tables that the kids can play with inside the roundhouse.

Amazing history and a great representation of Baltimore rail history. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves trains.

My father and I had a wonderful time. Great set-ups, hands-on exhibitions, and very friendly staff who were willing to help us and answer our questions. Other than the heat and the closed cafe, our time here will be something we will never forget.

Great museum for the train enthusiast. All life-sized trains and a few are open to browse the inside. For a few extra dollars you can ride a train. Don't miss the model trains and the other building with even more trains! If you go in the warm weather you'll probably get to see the model trains running outside. Birthday party bookings available. Free parking.

It is a big museum with lots of trains, indoor exp and outdoor playground. there is train ride for about 1 mile, and there is train birthday party. They even have cookie taste, very very kids friendly.

Informative and entertaining. Great displays and friendly staff.

Polar Express. The experience was great for the kids. A little pricey for what it was, especially with COVID-19 restrictions about not being able to enjoy beverages and cookies aboard.
Casey Tilley
Active duty gets in for free. They have a play place for kids. It's well kept and full of history. Would definitely recommend to the highest if you ever visit Baltimore just like I did.

This was the coolest museum! Amazing history of rail, from horse drawn carriages to hulking steam locomotives and sleek streamlined diesel electric engines. Plenty of things for kids and adults to see, touch and even ride.
Christopher Martin
It's an awesome fun filled experience for all ages. Lots of historic locomotives, the food is great, and to top it off a great ride on Thomas the train.

I have had one of the Greatest Christmas parties I have ever went to. John's Hopkins had their famous Christmas parties there. My wife is a nurse there at the hospital. The decorations were the best. The atmosphere was festive and Grand. Music was fanominal. The caterer was one of the best. We have ever had the privilege to experience. The steak and sea food was on point. The DJ had us all out on the floor dancing. The service was top notch!
As for the museum during regular business hours. Are one of Baltimore's legendary places of history. Great for a day trip with family and or friends. Also top notch for school trips. A great place for ever generation. Totally fun to learn and explore.. you know if it were not for the rail road. We would not have an American Standard Time, and time zones.
Before the rail road each town in America. Set their own time by the town time clocks. And each town were all a little different. For the trains to run on time by the schedule. They came up with the American Standard Time Zones.
Soooo. .. Thank You Rail Roads for the right times!

Great place to take the kids or if you are a railroad buff. We took our class of pre k , kindergarten and first graders for a train ride. They got to explore in the roundhouse and nearby buildings. It was educational as well as fun.
Heather Davis
This place was great! They have so many different types of trains and miniture train sets and villages. You can also take a short ride one which is usually fun for the kids but may not be as exciting for the adults but still worth the money

This is a great place for any train lovers, including those with little kids! Every space is huge so we felt safe being there given coronavirus. We went on a Friday afternoon and it was almost empty!
Christopher Stoddard
Absolutely loved this museum. Wish we had more time to explore. We were there for two hours; could easily have spent half a day there. Also, the staff were super kind and helpful. Highly recommended.

Our 6 year old is obsessed with trains and we love attending the special events like Day Out with Thomas. There is a great kid area with multiple wooden Thomas sets and coloring activities. However, the regular exhibits, which seem geared more for adults, hold very little interest for either of our kids.
James Bancroft
Amazing collection of locomotives including those from the earliest days which I can look at all day. A tour of the workshop was given at 1pm. Parking is free but the surrounding streets look a little less than affluent although it didn't look unsafe.
Catherine Del valle
My kids love the museum and they learn something new in every visit.
Tom Edwards
A unique place! Lots of interesting locomotives, both old and new. They really cater to young kids as they have toys for them and lots of engines the kids can touch and play with the controls.

We went for the Tommy the Train trip. That was disappointing. I am a big time Smithsonian supporter, but a 20 minute train ride after a 40 minute standing in line waiting scene doesn't work for me... Especially with a 2 year old and 1 year old in tow. The balance of the museum is excellent. Do the museum... Skip Tommy.... The kids who are into the Tommy characters series will get nothing from the "ride".... They can see Tommy and some of his "friends" parked at the station and get just as much joy without all the cramming in line and waiting... The train trip is a2. The museum is a 5+

This is a great train museum! My kids loved it, especially the train ride and model trains setups located throughout the museum. The gift shop was well stocked and reasonably priced.

Very cool. Lots of exhibits. Impressive roundhouse. Friendly, knowledgeable docents. Kids would love the exhibits and indoor and outdoor play areas. Neat looking giftshop, but it closed early. Tuesdays are half price admission, but on Thurs thru Sun you can take a short ride for an extra fee. Museum admission required in order to ride the train. Easy, free, secure parking. Recommended!

Awesome place in the heart of the old Irish neighborhood of Baltimore. There is parking contrary to reports of not finding any, you just have to look (lock your doors). Wish I would have took more pictures, will definitely go again an update the review.
Tendai Rukobo
Lots of trains that you can get in and see. Fun activities for kids.

Great place to visit however, if I had one criticism is the prices for kids were the same as the adults. We took our two Grand kids ages 2 and 4 which we paid over $100. These prices will deter larger families from coming out which in the long run this Musem will miss out on much needed dollars.
Zack Goldman
Great museum if you love trains and I love trains!
Jody May
Impressive collection of locomotives from early steam to late 20th century diesel electric. The collections are incredibly well-preserved and the museum allows visitors to explore them freely. Not just for kids and train enthusiasts, the museum will appeal to anyone who appreciates industrial innovation and American history. We were in Baltimore for a convention and visited the museum in the morning, which is a short (and safe) walk from the harbor up Pratt Street. Yes, this is the B&O Railroad from the popular board game. Were enjoyed our visit!
Scott Ellis
Amazing museum. Any fan of American history, and the role trains played, will want to visit. It's a large museum and its not obvious at first that there is an outside area and secondary building. I'd recommend a minimum of two hours here.

So much history to learn including history behind how time zones came to be

Really cool place that's otherwise not mentioned in any travel guides for Baltimore. Restored old trains and they let you enter these trains and take a look around. It was recently renovated too. Tour guide is super nice and knows a lot about the place.
