Reviews of Mountain Gateway Museum
Ronny Kirste
This museum gives insight into living in the mountains in the 19th century. Not crowded and very friendly staff. Plan to stay for 30-60 minutes. It's free.
Macky Kyle
A great little museum and grounds. Our kiddos were able to get a glimpse into how folks lived a hundred plus years ago. There are two cabins on the property to visit and also a museum.
Melody Kristensen
Although small, this was a lovely little stop. It's peaceful and very pretty. I enjoyed the exhibits and the staff was so friendly. They have picnic tables near the creek. Definitely worth a stop.
Veronica Williams
This museum was a local hidden treasure spot! It had so much local Appalachian history for the WNC area. It's a great place for kids to learn about our local history & resources.
Creighton Carroll
Interesting photos with descriptions. Really old houses that were open to visitors got browsing through at your own pace. Staff was knowledgeable about the museum pieces and history. Plenty of books about local history as well as brochures about other local historical sites and general activities
Adam Spencer
It's a really nice place to go and check out some old cabins in the history of the place I'll definitely go back in see more one day when I'm feeling a lot better LOL.

Solo morning in Old Fort at Mountain Gateway Museum
It was a solo trip down to Old Fort, NC to check out Mountain Gateway Museum. The museum has a couple of exhibits called, "A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans" and "Inspiration in the Mountain: Writers & Western North Carolina" that I wanted to see. The exhibits were good. The staff was very kind and helpful.
While not the biggest museum, it was full of charm and style that only be founds in the mountains of western NC. Just like the quaint little town of Old Fort, NC where the museum is located. The museum has a history of its own. It should be visited.

first off they had locals playing mountain songs which made for a nice touch right for the bat. The Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center collects and preserves artifacts and other historical materials relating to the history and heritage of North Carolina in a local, regional, national, and international context. small and pleasing. glad i was there. :)

If you're in Old Fort be sure to stop by Old Fort's Mountain Gateway Museum. Not far off of Interstate 40 and free of charge (donations accepted gladly) plus you get to learn about the town's Appalachian history and its early settlers. Be sure to tour the log cabins on site along with a beautiful creek behind museum. Kiesa is a very gracious and friendly museum host, who shared her knowledge about the area's history with me. Highly recommend stopping on your journey to Asheville and its surrounding areas.

Very cool place!!! We had a picnic out by the creek and loved the historical models. The displays change downstairs. This time we learned all about a photographer who spend his whole life taking photos of mountain families and their way of life. He was an artist as well. He made basket's out of tree.
Alicia Malcomb
There's not a ton of options here in the small town to do on a Late Sunday afternoon. We're in town for the fourth of July holiday weekend and are thankful that it's not crowded. They have an ice cream social tomorrow evening which sounds absolutely adorable for a small town. If we weren't going to be heading home it sounds like a fun thing to do.
Brooks Payne
Very lovely museum with interesting exhibits about the history of Western NC. Definitely a nice place to stop if you are in the area. Free admission.
ncpofolksm
Westernmost State museum in NC...if you are in the area..check it out...nice rotating displays...
Marissa Dulaney
Beautiful place to visit and get a glimpse of what life looked like when everyone lived in cabins. There are some picnic tables and the river right there. If you cross the bridge you can visit the public library.
Jason Jeffords
Super fun stop off for the kids to run around and stretch their legs a bit and see a bit of history.
Joy Molina
We love this place, it is laid back, genuine, and food is amazing!
Candace Henry
This was an interesting stop while hiking in Catawba falls. We went inside a house/cabin that was built in the 1800's and I got to work the weaving machine. Pretty neat. You could spend about 5 minutes here and see everything you need to see. They have 2 cabins, but we only went into one of them.
Susan Hollifield
Very pretty and peaceful place.
Ann Ludington
This was a quick stop. Denise was amazing and I loved exploring the old cabins on site as well as the Vietnam pictures and moonshine still inside.
Mark Haskell
Pretty spot with historic cabins on a stream, but is closed on Mondays and that is when we stopped.

This place was wonderful and so is the people working here
Dillon Beatty
Awesome museum with a friendly staff. It's all free and worth a visit.
Woody Wood
Very well done, just on the small side. Friendly staff. 1 to 1.5 hour's is plenty of time to see/read it all. Don't miss the brewery across the street.
Arre Jay
Nice stop for a rest break or a peaceful place to eat lunch. Staffer seemed friendly but I was not greeted as the other visitors. Maybe she was busy talking to the local that was sitting in a chair....maybe. Wasn't greeted, asked if I had any questions or anything. Fortunately the creek and exhibits were interesting.
Randy Murray
It was good to see this place again after at least 20 years. Two rustic mountain cabins and a museum tell the story of mountain life in NC more than a century ago. Life was hard back then but good.
Donna Tipton
Was beautiful quite and peaceful just days before the flood of 2018
David Moushey
I go when I'm working in town for a lunch break. Sitting by the creek and just relaxing in the shade is a nice break from work. The cabins are cool on the outside, ive looked inside but there isn't a lot signage for context inside them.
Debra Biddix
Personally I liked it they have some interesting artifacts of history from this town (old Fort) and the building itself is lovely inside very nice. Outside, you can have a picnic in front of the river..I think it's nice a family type place
Deborah Grindstaff
Great turn out. Lots of local crafts and canned goods. Soul food vendor was delicious.
Donald Green
I gave it an okay and not a 5 star, because although it's TRUE to the days of old,it lacks luster. meaning it's not vibrant nor appealing to the eye, it's a nice place to just relax and get your mind right ,but what I'm hoping is one of you ambitious architects and home decorators will lean in and bless the place.
Thanks a thousand D.G.
Cindy Grinder

My favorite part, the two cabins on the property. Be sure to read the descriptions about each one. Beautiful outdoor area next to a mountain steam.
Karen Gibbs
My Great Great Grandpa built and lived one of those cabins ( if not both/not sure) he was William Bloomfield Rumfelt.
Duncan Roberts
A nice little museum, but it doesn't have a lot of content. Really appreciated the two cabins that they have and that you can walk through.
Lourens Steger
My wife was part owner of the Steppe cabin. They collectively donated it. At one time, there were 12 family members living in this small cabin.

Part of the NC Museum network it has a real log home inside to show you how small homes were years ago. Also you can find a real still (of course not working) setup and a lot of local history. Part of their train exhibit is over in the old train station so make sure to go there too just a block away. The setting along the creek with two real log cabins on the campus.

Some needs to fix the fence out front and clean up the signs. You could also post the upcoming events and how to get involved.
