Reviews of Alaska Aviation Museum
Allison Wright
Super great museum! Absolutely loved the control tower that you can go in and hear ATC. Would have loved to be there when some of the cockpits were open. Also would have liked to know there was a kid play area in the first hangar before walking in there and getting stuck because the six year old wouldn't leave.
DJ A
Nice place for your kids who love airplanes, this place has like 4 sections you can check. At the control tower, you can see airplanes take off and land on the lake.
The place has some nice little toys for the kids, we spent 2 hours here watching planes land and take off, and checking inside some of the airplanes they had in the yard area.
Keith Gammel
Good collection of numerous style of aircraft and how they attributed to Alaska. My kids most enjoyable part was the viewing tower. Watching the planes land and take off with the radio traffic. They also enjoyed tracking the flights on the flight tracker.
A I
This museum is fantastic and efficiently covers a huge amount of Alaskan aviation history. The Alaska airlines 737 was the highlight for me but I also found the in-depth exhibition on the WWII battle for the Aleutian Islands to be super fascinating.
Carl Rytych
This place was great. There are multiple hangers with lots of things to see. Old planes and WWII history. There's also the old traffic control tower you can enter and watch the seaplanes taking off and landing.
Mauricio Molina
What a great place with great displays....is an excellent stop in Anchorage for aviation enthusiasts and public in general,...
Like someone else said, it has a lot of info on the Japanese military presence during WW2 in the area specifically in Attu Island and surrounding area.
Great plane displays and everything is nice tagged and explained, the outside area is great for taki g a walk and have a rest on the Traffic Control Tower where you can see sea planes taking off or coming down.
The hangar was closed for a private event, but even so we had a great time and enjoy the gift shop.
The personnel is very helpful and attentive...
Enjoy this beautiful place
Edward Wright
Every avgeek’s heaven. Really good place. There is even a tower with ATC radio from ANC. Loved it
Karen Richardson
This museum is wonderful! There was quite a bit of information on the Japanese attack on Attu, of which I was completely unaware before. Then our visit was topped with a fabulous tour from Fred, one of the highly knowledgeable and trained volunteers that help with the restoration of aircraft that are displayed here.
Brian Bugg
The Museum was fantastic except for the condition of the F-15.
Jonathan Joles
This museum gives visitors a comprehensive view of Alaska's first aviators as well as the state's involvement in World War II. There are several historical planes and artifacts that are on display and are in great condition. There is an old control tower here where visitors can watch floatplanes take off and land on Fort Hood, the world's busiest floatplane landing area in the world, while listening to live audio feed between pilots and air traffic controllers. They also have on exhibit a recently retired Alaska Airlines 737 that visitors can climb into to see the cockpit and cabin.
Michael S
Terrific museum within walking distance of the Anchorage airport. Fascinating to learn how aviation dramatically altered the development of Alaska. Super friendly staff and randomly caught a shuttle back to the airport!
Terrance Abbott
The price is a bit higher than I would like but with at least 5 building of planes and history to look at it is worth a stop when you have time. It mostly focuses on aviation in Alaska but also talks about the impact of World War II on the state as well.
There are some hands on exhibits for the kids and a documentary to watch so everyone can enjoy their visit. If you make your way out to the restoration hanger be sure to look over the works in progress and talk to the people putting in their time.
Erik Bailey
What an awesome place.
Talked to the curator and he said there original museum burnt down and this is their new location.
This museum is unique in that every plane in the museum has ties to Alaska. Either it started there, crashed there, or somehow touched Alaska, all their planes have some history with this state.
If you are up here, I'd definitely recommend visiting.
Igor
The planes are well kept though the museum is rather small for its status as a statewide one
Peter Bagwell
We came for the Alaska Aviation Festival. In addition to the interesting exhibits, large collection of airplanes and helicopters, there was a lot of activity including flybys of various aircraft. Many of the items are in good condition and there is literally too much to see. We had a great time despite stumbling upon the festival on our vacation.
Somya Sharma
Nice museum overall. Good collection of war artifacts and plane engines. We also really enjoyed watching sea planes land from the tower.
Reason for low rating is that their website claims "Flight simulator including full-immersion, Oculus Rift virtual reality" which was inaccurate and the employees haven't even heard of such a thing.
*Update* - They apologized for the misinformation on their website, promised to update the website and offered credit.
King Sovereign
I'm really surprised at the level of interest that this museum possesses. You can see everything from Helicopters to airplane engines. Virtually everything aerospace is contained in this facility. This facility has a lot to offer the aerospace enthusiast. I recommend checking it out!!!!
Ronald Crutcher
Very nice museum with some realy interesting pieces of history
Noah Hamner
Short and sweet museum, goes into Alaskan history with flight and air lines. Lots of restored planes and some really good information on the battles in the Alaskan islands during world war II. There's a short radio tower for lounging where you can listen to the local radio chatter and get a good view of the lake.
Bruce Marshall
Really nice staff that are not only friendly but very informative. Looking at the planes and learning more WWII history was such a treat.
John Nelson
Spent about an hour and a half here. Small but plenty to see and beautiful views from the tower on Lake Hood. An easy stop on the way to or from the airport.
Sal Campo
Very interesting museum, full of aviation history in Alaska, wonderful!
Sam Wolf
Learned a whole bunch about a war that I didn't even know existed! Great place to get an idea of the rich history of Alaska.
Claire Pawelec
Awesome experience. Very cool to get up close to some of the planes. The small tower was available and we could go in, sit and watch planes land and take off from the water. Staff was great and knowledgeable!
Kyle Eberhart
I didn't even know this was here, but I absolutely loved it. I could have spent more than the 2 hours I was there, but I like airplanes and aviation history.
doug richards
Great displays of early Alaska aviation, guide was very knowledgeable and informative
Dennis Blankenship
great history of the bush pilot.
Jarule.Alaska L.
Great to see Alaska’s Aviation History. Great location, so you can stroll by the lake and go plane Spotting! Try the simulator!
Thunder
Lots of Alaskan Aviation history. You can't separate the two over the last century. Took me two hours plus to see everything, but I like to read as much as I can. I was there in the winter, so didn't get to enjoy the sea base like I would have liked, but still worth the trip.
Desiree Cameron
Thanks for allowing the Cin scouts to enjoy the aviation museum.
F Stein
Great place and a must-see for aviation enthusiasts. Museum not only displays various aircraft but also covers the impact the aircraft had on the development of Alaska. You can easily spend an hour (when the sun is out) sitting on the terrace of the old tower and watch sea planes taking off. Friendliness of the staff really made my day, thanks!
St. Croix
Spectacular. The restored Grumman Goose reminds me of island hoping from St. Croix to St. Thomas. Dwight, the restoration mechanic has a wealth of knowledge and war history. Take some time to sit out on the tower balcony to watch the float planes takeoff and landing.
cross Lock
The staff is frendly, helpfull when needed. The facility is partly under renovations bit still open.
Genevieve H
Highly recommend this place. If you are visiting AK this is a must. It isn't a boring museum like you'd expect, and they have a non-operational tower that overlooks the seaplane base.
Jesse Gill
Great little museum! Entry fee was very reasonable. Contains tons of info about the history of aviation in Alaska. I especially loved the section about the battle of Attu. I never knew about the Japanese invasion of Alaska during WWII, so I really enjoyed learning something new!
L. W.
Interesting museum full of local aviation history. Relatively small, even reading through all exhibits and watching a mini-documentary we spent just over an hour there. Price to get in the door is somewhat high; however, ticket sales help fund plane restoration projects.
Ashley Swartz
A real eye opener and wonderful educational history lesson.
The aviation world in Alaska is quite fascinating.
The planes and jet on display, were fantastic.
A very sad, dark part of history rarely discussed , was also showcased in a very good documentary.
Erinn Stranko
I've been here a couple of times one of those being for the annual Bodega Beer Fest. Super cool place and awesome for an event. Only problem being the bathrooms. They could use some updates and possibly more actual stalls if they are going to throw large events here. As a museum, it's super cool and driving around Lake Hood to see all the planes is a plus.
KK6WGO Rollins
Tower is fun place to watch float planes take off, you can listen to air traffic control.
Museum does a good job telling the story of Japanese invasion and bombing of US during WW II. Yes, Japan did invade US soil, they landed and held two Aleutian islands.
Cam Kay
The Pilgrim 100-B N709Y was built in 1932 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. There were only 10 planes like this produced. The Alaska Aviation Museum houses this plane. This is an excellent Museum to go to for Aviation Historical Information.
Josiah A
Fantastic museum! Even with some parts being closed for COVID it was still well worth it. Wish I had more time to visit-- it could easily take 5+ hours to read everything.
Amy Cummings
Lots of interesting info and artifacts organized into a smallish space. Good photos and info on the Aleutian island involvement in WWII. The kids loved climbing into the tower and looking over the airfield. Some updating taking place as of April '18.
Ryan Edgington
The displays of planes were pretty cool, as was the flight simulator, and my favorite was the "theater room" which plays a documentary on Japan's attack on the Aleutian islands in WWII. However, it seemed the museum mostly featured airlines or pilots who became small business owners. I would've enjoyed more displays on Alaskan WWII pilots, as well as how the Cold War effected aviation (if at all). Instead, the musem seemed to put a lot of attention on the business side of aviation. It may have given a better visual if there was a map showing the locations that our current bush pilots fly to, but maps were lacking as well. I definitely enjoyed parts of the museum, but I probably won't be going back.
Theresa D
Came for the 75th Anniversary commemorating the battle of Attu. Color Guard made an appearance.
Rob P
Definitely the coolest thing in the museum was this 1000 stitch belt.
Jonathan Taylor
Fun museum with interesting aircraft and lots of exhibits on aviation in Alaska.
Terry Davidson
Nice aviation museum of Alaska.
Sarah Sandbak
The perfect wedding location. We originally considered an outdoor wedding, but did not want to risk the Alaskan weather. The museum gave us the best of both worlds. The auditorium was the perfect place for our ceremony and we were able to get some great outdoor shots by the lake, the planes, the totem pole, etc., etc., etc.
Shari is wonderful to work with. We wanted to move some chairs and tables around (a major no-no at some venues) and she didn't even bat an eyelid. They have a great kitchen, complete with overhead door for easy access, which makes set up easier for your caterer.
Overall we had a wonderful experience.
Rob Stapleton
The Merrill Field Tower Cab is a great place for wine tasting or party and to view Lake Hood aviation operations. The hangars are full of history and historic aircraft. This museum is always changing exhibits and rebuilding aircraft to fly, not just to replicate. Not only are the aircraft historic one of the hangars is on the National Registry as the first hangar at Lake Hood the largest Seaplane base in world.
Brian Barnes
Fun history of Alaska Airlines and old planes. We went up to the Merrill tower outside and sat in a chair and enjoyed the float planes coming and going. There is a repeater speaker from the real tower so you can get the feel of the communications required for operations.
Susan Krick
Although I am not a hardcore aviation enthusiast, this was an interesting visit and a great way to spend some time while waiting on a flight out of the ANC airport. The displays were not all in the best shape and they are spread out in various rooms , hangars, and outdoors. The $15 entrance fee was a bit steep, but really it looks like they need the money so I didn't mind paying to support them.
Joseph Principe ll
I had a great tour of Alaska aviation Museum, the tour staff was excellent they had knowledge of all the exhibits and all about Alaska Aviation , If you’re in the area stop by Alaska aviation Museum you will enjoy it it is a great place to take your family and you will learn the history of Alaska aviation
Mike Elizondo
Definitely enjoying everything the museum has to offer. My kids are having a blast. Will be returning again.
D Parker
If your into aviation, stop by & view their displays of vintage aircraft as well as the restoration shop where they are making "magic" with older aircraft. Its convenient, right on the airport grounds in Anchorage, and overlooking the busiest seaplane port in the US.
Jamie Piszczuk
A great museum telling the history of flying in Alaska. So much information! Stories varying from the first flight to the Japanese invasion during WWII to the formation of Alaskan Airlines - great stuff!!
Cindy Zeolla
Interesting. Best part for us was to sit in the tower and watch float planes land and take off.
Rick Benken
Very nice museum about Alaska aviation. Very interesting and well worth the trip. Lots of museum restored planes.
Bradley Peterson
I've always been an airplane lover, and getting the chance to see rare aircraft such as a Grumman Goose, Widgeon, an airworthy Boeing Stearman, watching a Fairchild Pilgrim be restored, and seeing all the dirty and old historic aviation stuff you won't find at many other air museums is very unique. The experience ranks up there with the Seattle Museum of Flight.
Scarlett Marklin
Amazing you get to see planes take off from the water; the gift shop is reasonably priced and you get to visit the old Merrill field control tower placed on site along with an Alaska Airlines 727.

Schönes kleines Museum. Dort wird sehr anschaulich erklärt, welche Insel, vor Alaska, die Japaner eingenommen hatten. Es wird sehr viel Wert auf die Geschichte der Buschflieger gesetzt
