I love this place. I never knew rocks could be so interesting. My kids always wanted to go and every time we do I see something new. Meteorites, fossils, salt lamps, spheres of pure copper. I give my kids a budget (say, $9 or $13) and they always find a neat selection of new things to get.

Have actually been going here for several years, Intermittently, but the experience has always been fun. I enjoy making things from scratch and sometimes I need a rare fossil or polished cabuchon or a unusual mineral deposit to complete the project. This place has all of those things in spades, Gigantic collection of rare Earth materials, gemstones, jewelry, beads, tools, you name it. I am making a mirror for a friend, these folks able to find me a nice variety of Amethyst, carnelian, rose quartz and rainbow moonstone For me to install upon the frame. This place can be a little expensive, but they have the goods if you have an idea of which are looking for and the money to spend. Probably one of the few places you are going to see dinosaur and Saber toothed tiger fossils outside of the field museum. Great place!

This is a great store! Picked up a juvenile cave bear jaw with some cave bear teeth. It was a very smooth experience. Owner is very knowledgeable and was great to talk to. Will definitely be coming back here. Hopefully they’ll have some more cat fossils in the near future.

the staff were super friendly and polite ! The guy cashier is the sweetest! complimented me and my friends outfits:) prices are super good, much cheaper than other places. Lots of .90 cents agate and stones , .50 cent tumbles . You can fill a little bag for only 2.95. Great deal I got 15 tumbles for that price ! Regular tumbles are priced well too! 1.50-3.50 for many stones which is very reasonable. Fluorite necklace was about $10.00, fair pricing ! pleasant experience will be back soon 😊

Great store for jewelry that doesn't look like you bought it at the mall. Fossils. Crystals. Amber. Strings of semi-precious stones which you can buy as is, or have made into necklaces. My wife bought a silver and turquoise ring for $65, made by a Native American craftswoman. A fossil museum in the basement will entertain children while you shop. There are meter parking lots on this block of Main Street and nearby.

I absolutely love this place. Coming here is always an event because I end up looking around for at least an hour. The free museum in the basement is a densely packed collection of top quality fossils. The store upstairs has a massive quantity of unique, fine quality jewelry. It ranges from affordable to astronomical. The real gem for me are the fossils and mineral samples. I can always find something special to add to my collection. This time I was able to pick up a surprisingly affordable fossil whale vertebrae and a beautifully prepared sheet of ammonites suitable for wall hanging.

Dave's has been the best rock shop EVER for at least 40 years. The variety of stones and gems, both set and loose, is unparalelled. The prices for already set stones are a bit high but the prices for unset items are quite reasonable. If we are visiting the Chicago area we always stop at Dave's!

Oh my God. What James and Suzanna have done with place! Its like a museum! Oh wait, there is a museum in the basement! There is a complete fossilized skeleton of a cave bear down there, along with other, rather large specimens of Otherworldly animals! I purposely did not post pictures of the inside as I would love for you to visit the shop in person! So there! That's my review!!!!!

A cross between a museum and shop. I can spend hours here. There's literally something for every budget and personality. You can buy a shiny stone for 50 cents or a unique decorative crystal or fossil that belongs in a museum for thousands! If you visit Evanston it's worth stopping in.

I went in today with my bestfriend in the afternoon. This is the second time I’ve come into the shop and both experiences were amazing. All the staff are friendly and casual, and give you time and space to wander and choose crystals etc. This is the largest crystal/fossil shop I’ve personally come across, and it has something for everyone. The person who checked my items out this time was very polite and patient as well as generous. I can say that this is probably the best crystal shop I’ve been to (: There is also a mini museum downstairs, full off fossils, dino bones, and insects in amber. Beautiful experience!

So blessed to have such an excellent gem and mineral shop in our community! They always have high quality items and they have information about the origin of their products readily available. The prices are really reasonable as well. Since crystals have become more popular, many places have started charging exorbitant prices, but Dave's hasn't followed this trend. This keeps rock collecting accessible for everyone, which I totally respect. The staff is really nice and helpful. They take the time to package your items nicely and will include information cards if you request it. They also have an excellent free fossil museum in the basement. You can easily spend a couple of hours here and I frequently do. I can't say enough good things about Dave's. If you love crystals, fossils and gemstones, you really need to visit Dave's immediately!

This place was extremely cool. The amount of interesting things to look at was a nice surprise. A great collection of fossils is free to view in the basement. If you are looking for an interesting gift this would be the place to visit. I will personally be returning at some point to purchase a couple of items to display in my home. There is something appealing and mysterious about owning something that has been around 490 million years, and will likely be around long after I have become dust. The prices also seemed reasonable for smaller items, although there are some very expensive specimens on display. Definitely worth a stop to check out.

the stones you buy from Dave's Rock shop are high quality and low cost. It's one of my favorite places to go but I tend to end up buying so much that I didn't mean to purchase. That's usually because they have the books you can use for free that help you navigate to selection and a knowledgeable staff that offers support. Best part is alllllll the stones you get to choose from. I think that there are lot of imitation places out there selling expensive (yet fake) stones but this isn't one. I highly recommend them.

There's such a large selection of stones, minerals and fossils to choose from it was hard to find a place to start. The staff was extremely helpful in suggesting particular stones for certain purposes. They have A TON of different stone beads and bead styles that it's like a crafters paradise. There is jewelry and other gifts as well! The library of geology and fossil books as well as the large fossil museum in the basement are terrific. What a gem(stone)! Wandered in here the other day, mostly to see what the place was about. I'm not a rock person, so I probably can't say much to the variety and quality of their specimens, but as a lay person, I can say that they had some really beautiful rocks and fossils at what seemed to be quite reasonable prices. They had some really large geodes / crystal pieces that would make a terrific focal point for an elegant home or upscale office. Between a friend and I, we managed to spend about $180 before leaving, only $6 of that being on the milk-chocolate "rocks". I think the pieces I got were great. The staff was more than happy to show us different items around the shop and to explain some of the fascinating colors and patterns we saw. I'd happily recommend this place to a friend.

They have a museum with dinosaur bones in their basement! I could end the review right now, as that's sufficient reason to go *anywhere*. I've been going here since I was a little kid who liked collecting interestingly shaped and colored rocks, and still stop in now and then. They have a nice variety of minerals, precious stones, and even some fossils and insects in amber from around the world. There's also a few books on mineralogy for kids and adults. There's also some crystal healing books for the New Age set, but you can ignore these and still learn something and have a good time looking at pretty rocks. Great place to take kids for an outing.

I've been to over 20 rock shops and Dave's is the single best rock shop I've been to so far. Some of the pieces are 1/3 the price I've seen at much lower quality rock shops. Which was a surprise since Evanston is a higher class area.

I remember coming to this place as a kid, and the man working the cashier taught me quite a bit about both sales tax and geology! Today, I've got dozens of mineral and fossil specimens because he sparked that in me. Unfortunately, today's workers at Dave's are different- peddling all of this "New Age" crystal healing quackery. I get it- you guys have to pay the bills- but whenever I walk in nowadays, I leave with a bitter taste on my tongue knowing that I am supporting misinformation instead of appreciation of Earth's treasures.
