Reviews of Hot Cakes Ballard
Kallen Tu
We got the smores hotcake and shared it between 4 people. The staff were super friendly and even let us try the smokey chocolate (which we went with the dark instead).
For the size of the hot cake, it's quite pricey (being around $16 total).
It was tasty though and came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a pool of chocolate syrup. The molten cake was gooey and satisfied our chocolate craving.
Alex Maloney
Tried the Dark Decadence, Lemon Tart, Drunken Sailor Milkshake, and Coconut Cream Molten cake. I think the lemon tart (which was perfection) and dark decadence were my top favorite! The coconut ice cream was also fantastic. Can’t wait to bring friends here. Customer service was great and the ambience was so quaint!

What an amazing place to grab dessert here in Ballard! Great vibes, rich chocolate cake, definitely recommend trying one of the molten lava cake options, we got the seasonal cherry almond molten cake which was utterly delicious!! You can also never go wrong with the classic flavor if you don’t feel like experimenting too much. They’ve a wide variety of drinks, although I miss having their butter beer which is off the menu recently.

Hotspot for all your sweet cravings. This place is always busy and there’s always a queue to order. The atmosphere is good, menu is not too big but just enough to make you want many items. They have both hot and cold desserts. Tried when I had friends coking from out of town we got lavender and chocolate molten cake with vanilla icecream. It was yummy! Definitely a must go if you love desserts. Finding parking is a bit tricky because it’s a busy area.

I really appreciate when places do gluten free. GF desserts are really hard to come by and this experience was so fabulously indulgent I immediately enjoyed a 45 minute crash on the couch.
YeJi An
We loved the atmosphere and the cake was super rich and delicious! Got one dark decadence to eat in and one to go! Slightly pricey but worth the $$.

Need to visit this if you are visiting seattle. Gewy chocolate with vegan ice cream is my favorite, those caramel crumbles on top takes it to a whole new different level. Tried couple of different ones Dark decadence was a bit bitter (not a dark chocolate fan). Smokey s'mores with regular chocolate is another favorite they have option for this to make it with Smokey chocolates, you can try these chocolates On counter. Again it was too Smokey so opted for regular chocolate. Love the concept so definitely will visit again next time.

The chocolate cake and the ice cream are so so. I feel for a small lava cake and a single scoop of ice cream + the vibes, it’s certainly the right price to pay for a tourist or instagram worthy evening.
It’s a busy area, and tables are long shared ones inside with some outdoor seating as well.
Aishwarya
I really loved this place! Celebrated my birthday with a small dark decadence! They even gave me a cute little candle to make a wish 🍰✨❤️
The decor and the vibe with the little candles on the table is absolutely cute! …
Inna Zakharchenko
Delicious molten cakes and great selection for chocolate drinks. Lovely place to hang out. Has indoor and outdoor seating, you also need to bus your table.
Archit Patel
I am vegetarian and I loved gooey brownie. It doesn’t have eggs in it too. Not too sweet and a perfect savory for your sweet tooth!
Phil
What is not to love?!
Gooey, warm, and rich chocolate molten cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
They have different variations, such a s’mores (pictures), which was delicious.
Also on the menu: chocolate cake, creme burlee, espresso beverages, cookies, and affogato.
The only tricky part can be getting a table, especially Friday and weekend evenings.
romer moyano
I had the Dark Decadence and Americano coffee and it's delicious. My wife enjoyed her strawberry Hibiscus Margarita as well!
sonakshi agarwal
This is our favorite dessert place in Seattle.
Their molten lava cake with ice cream is amazing.
This time we tried the vegan sandwich. It was perfect with chips for the kid. It was crisp on top and soft from inside. The filling was smooth and just yummy. For a family who doesn’t eat egg this place has good tasty options.
They have outside seating for a big group as well. Must try place.
Joseph Lee
Aesthetic place with awesome desserts. The molten cakes are hot and fresh. Pair that with a scoop of ice cream, it can’t get better than that.
Sumedha k
Can’t get enough of this place. I haven’t taken so many of my friends and none have been disappointed. In fact they loved it! It’s a must try for anyone who has a sweet tooth

We'll, you see. The nights started like any other. It was finally my weekend and I was looking to wind down. It was my friends birthday, we were going out a place called "Hot Cakes". "What is this place?" I asked. Well...I was about to find out. The setting is warm and cozy which was welcome on this cold night. I ordered a cup of hot chocolate, from the first sip I was taken on a spiritual journey. I snuck a bite of my friends dark decadence and I experienced emotions I didn't know existed. If you ever need a moment to get away and experience taste the marrow of life, this is the place to be, my friend.
MaddiezMunchies
Tried their pumpkin spice cake and it was delicious! If you love fall flavors definitely try it!
Stuti Khurana
Very cute and warm place! A must try dessert place if you are in Ballard area in Seattle 😃 …
Kyler Hutch
Great selection of desserts. Organic and tasty! Molten Lava cakes look amazing. A good place to satisfy your sweet craving without breaking the bank!
Alan K.
Delicious! The smoked chocolate chips were amazing. Has the s'mores and the brownie. Both were great. Vegan ice cream was too coconut-y.
Michelly Calzadilla
We wanted to try this place for some time and finally got to recently and it was nice! We ordered "Dark Decadence" and a Cappuccino. The cake was rich and gooey, with a nice touch of crunch and caramel in the ice cream. The overall portions were quite small however. The Cappuccino was decent after some sugar, which isn't something I normally add. Together it was $17.50 - pricey for the small portion and mediocre Cappuccino with a pinch of sugar redemption. The ambience was nice, we were able to sit in the window and people (and dog) watch on Ballard Ave. The music selection was... interesting. It was some R&B mix with Marvin Gaye and Gnarls Barkley "Forget You" (except explicit) which kinda ruined the romantic mood. Nice spot to visit overall.
Alex Nguyen
Came to the spot for dessert after not trying it for about four years! I’ve always liked this place especially their hotcakes rather than their ice cream. The hotcakes was absolutely hot which was a good thing, it didn’t burn my tongue or anything but the chocolate was melting and it was basically like lava LOL which went so well with the ice cream. Super good quality. We did get a table and my only complaint was the service as we asked to dine in yet they gave us a to go order :(.
Austin Hendler
I don't hand out 5 star reviews like hotcakes, but for Hot Cakes I think I might have to.
The war homemade cookie with creamy vanilla ice cream and dark chocolate chunks with caramel drizzle was delicious. Couldn't be better.
The "butter beer" is an interesting beverage that is definitely worth a try is you like ginger. It has a subtle (not overpowering) ginger kick, with caramel and sweet undertones. Something you don't expect to be good but it is. Also worth a try.
Cozy and warm ambiance and decor.
They have a unique menu with a bunch of good stuff, as well as alcohol infused snacks and beverages. Need to start trying some of the other stuff they've got, definitely some gems on the menu.
Cool area to window shop and poke around too.
Prices were a little on the high end for what it is, but for a chic spot with some unique things on the menu. The price is forgivable and is a warm little place to keep the night going and grab a sweet treat.
Definitely would recommend, the reviews are justified.
Mohammed Rangwala
Nice cozy place, tends to get crowded on weekend nights but you can generally find a place to sit if you wait for sometime. Their Dark Decadence is to die for! They have some monthly special flavors as well, the orange hazelnut was excellent!
Ruchika Kabra
Most decadent molten chocolate cake I have ever had! I can go on n on about it. Perfect ooyi gooyi texture, not too sweet not too bitter dark chocolate, with perfect pairing of icecream and crumbles. It's hard to eat it all by yourself as it is too rich, so better to have a sharing partner. The grilled cheese with caramelized onions is also great! Crispy on outside multi grain bread and melted cheese inside, served with potato chips. I was so full that I didn't get a chance to taste their coffee, my friend did and she loved it. Will come back for that beautiful cake.
Megha Agarwal
Ice cream was nice; didn’t like the hot cake a lot, ordered the decadent hot cake with ice cream, the burnt caramel taste wasn’t nice! Little overpriced too for the quantity.
Brandon Keenan
Delicious dessert spot. It was crowded on a Thursday night for good reason. The molten cakes are delicious. We got the hazelnut one and the dark decadence one. Both were superb and the vanilla ice cream provided s good contrast to the rich chocolate flavors. The creme brûlée was per our friend “pretty good” but was left without a remainder on the plate.
Jenny
Visiting Ballard for the first time and stumbled upon this chocolate cafe. Large indoor space for shared seating, as well as outdoor. Even though this place is busy, it still felt cozy and comfortable. Warm lighting, festive decor, and delicious chocolate coffee and desserts.
Michael Powell
What an amazing spot to grab dessert. Love that they have indoor and outdoor options with a space heater and covered. Had the Bread Pudding and think that is one of the most delicious things I have had in my lifetime. What a treat!
Asif Ahmed
Great vibe. Great location even though finding parking is challenging. The coffee was good. The cake was really good, very sweet and rich.
Navin Sadarangani
Walked by and bumped into this place by chance. We were told by one of the guys standing in line that this was one of the best places for desserts in Seattle, at least in the area of Ballard. Hence we decided to try it coz who wouldn't want to be spoiled by lava cakes right. We tried the Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Molten Cake which was pretty good with homemade Nutella in the centre and the flavour of the month - coconut cream lava cake - which was unique and delicious too. Overall we quite liked it but the prices seem a bit over the top. For the price they charge for the portion size, I don't think I'd venture there again. But yes, good to try it once for sure. Their milkshakes and coffee looked good too.
Sheraz Malik
The original location and I have been coming here for many years. Open late and amazing hot cakes and bread pudding topped with ice cream.
Caspian Larson
Very yummy! Got dessert to-go but the containers were both: compostable, and perfect for keeping the molten chocolate hot! A bit on the pricier side but definitely worth it
Palvali Teja
Best milk shakes in Seattle. Period. Must visit place for chocolate lovers.
Jordan Lee
Got the dark decadence molten cake. I say that the portion to price ratio is a bit wack, but nonetheless, it was delicious. You have to eat it quick or the ice cream will melt and that's just not fun.
There was supposedly caramel in it, but I didn't really taste it. Nice dark chocolate flavor though.
Felie Hempfling
We typically come to Hot Cakes when we have a special occasion or friends/family in town. It doesn't disappoint, I love getting the chocolate and ice cream dish, it's simple but there's just something about it that makes it so amazing, perhaps it's the caramel I'm not sure but it's so good! Portion size is great as I'm able to share it with my girls. They do offer a non dairy ice cream option which we typically opt to get. The s'mores cookie features smoked chocolate chips, which takes some getting used to but worth a try.
Ryan W
I pray I never have to specify my last meal, but if I do, you know these will be on there. Just get the dark decadence hot cake, and melt into heaven (or whatever you want to call it).
Anna Szatkowski
Hot Cakes is that food I'll crave when I'm back home on the east coast and my sweet tooth gets a craving. Enough said. One week in Seattle and I went three times. I've tried the dark chocolate, gooey brownie, and PB. Prefer dark chocolate - all delicious.
tetiana danylchenko
I love Hot Cakes, when I think Ballard, I think Hot Cakes. I am a regular at this place be it a cup of latte or a dark chocolate molten cake, yummy. The service is amazing and I personally love the cozy atmosphere here, little candle lights...Hot Cakes is a perfect place for a cozy hangout and a sweet craving
Eliza Beth
The food and atmosphere were great, but the prices were a bit high. The "molten" doesnt necessarily mean "hot" or even warm, just as an FYI. The s'mores was heavenly and very rich.
Prateek Sharma
Delicious desserts. Get the Dark Decadent if you're not sure what to get. That's the de facto default order. One order would serve two people unless you're too much into desserts.
Alexander Romanov
We have been to hotcakes at least 20 times and it is always consistently delicious. The prices are outrageously high but that's just Seattle for you. The place can get really crowded and super noisy so it's better to come early. During our international travels we used hotcakes as the gold standard of chocolate molten lava cake.
Kalyanashis Chakraborty
Love this place. Weekends be prepared to wait in a queue. Very good Vegan option. Street parking can be a little challenge as there are lot of restaurants around and busy. Even their cake mix is available yo buy. Cool people and comfortable environment. Must try out.
Bryan Nagy
We ordered a few coffees and lava cakes. The cakes were very tasty. You likely don't need one to yourself. Loved the ice cream on the side.
The inside of the cafe is very natural with a push to the environment. Very organized recycling.
Seth T
Delicious desert place. They have molten chocolate cakes, ice cream, and assorted other items.i absolutely love the cookies! This place always draws a crowd so be prepared to queue but it's well worth it.
Andy Weedin
As dusk began to grab hold of the evening, the restaurant staff placed hand-lit candles on the long, antique table. We shared a delicious, warm chocolate lava cake with the perfect portion of coconut ice cream. It was so yummy, I only wish the serving was bigger.
Luke Icenhower
One of the best creme brûlée’s in town! And a hot chocolate ganache cake that was very delicious too. Staff was friendly and the vibe on the outdoor deck was perfect for a date night.
Ruchika Batra
Warm cookies with ice creams a must try.
Christy Luk
The signature chocolate cake was way too sweet. I thought it was just me, but I see that everyone who order that also have leftover chocolate lava cake, so it confirm that it is way tooo sweet.
On the other hand crem brulee was way better, very balance taste.
Half self serve place, so cant ask for too much in terms of service.
Michael Bardwell
Went with a group of friends and were able to find seating for 8 around 10pm on a Saturday (not all together, but close) Everyone got sweets while I enjoyed a carmalized onion grilled cheese. Hot the spot! Washes it down with a local Fremont beer. What you'd expect to pay in Ballard.
Narine Harut
It's a small place, long lines but it was going kind of fast, crowded and noizy, we ordered 3 different desserts , I liked my creme Brule, it was good, rhubarb cake was good too, but chocolate cake was too chocolaty, overwhelming.
Kevin
Best dessert place in Seattle. The hot cakes are the obvious best menu option (and worth the price), but their milkshakes at also super thick and tasty!
Isaac Haseley
When I first moved to Seattle, Baskin Robbins had somewhat of a monopoly on the dessert scene. Treats were $2 and ingredient lists were unreadable. It was a simpler time.
The last ten years have produced a dessert renaissance in Seattle, and nowhere is this more true than in my neighborhood of choice, the boutique-dessert capitol of Capitol Hill.
There’s Molly Moon’s, Salt & Straw, Cupcake Royale, Kurt Farm Shop, Cinnaholic, Hello Robin, Sugar Plum, Menchie’s, Nouveau, R & M, Frankie & Jo’s, and Crumble & Flake. That’s more ampersands than I’m comfortable typing, and it doesn’t even include the shops that didn’t make it.
Or Hot Cakes. In a crowded Seattle field, nothing screams #treatyoself like this gem. It’s molten cakes paired with ice creams, smoked chocolate and boozy shakes, homemade s’mores and cookie sundaes. It’s expensive and celebratory and it’s the best dessert around.
Pro tips:
- Sample the smoked chocolate chips at the retail counter before buying because the taste is unique and dividing.
- Don’t miss the Butterbeer, a warm and heavenly creamy cocktail that tastes almost nothing like you’d expect.
- Skip the crowds! Visit Sunday through Thursday when the lines are shorter and you don’t have to play vulture to snag a table.
Abhash Kumar Singh
NW drinking chocolate and molten cake were amazing.
momo
Words can't explain the decadent flavors at hot cakes. The menu is simple, 6 hot chocolate cakes to choose from. The Dark Decadence and Smores was out favorite. It's crispy on the outside, soft and oozing of chocolate with each bite. Take home a Smores bar, I swear you won't ever forget this experience.
Morgane
Okay so you gotta try their warm cookie with vanilla ice cream okay? The place was great even if a bit too small so it gets really warm really quickly so no need to tell you that the warm cookie didn’t help. But the food was really good even if a bit expensive
Aprajita Yadav
What a treat in the cold winter weather! It is a little pricy (~$15 for a cake) but all the ingredients are high quality. I don’t know if it’s just the experience of having ice cream with a molten lava cake - but their ice cream tastes delicious!
It can get quite busy but the tables tend to turn over quickly and the staff do their best to wipe them down in between.
Jacob Espy
Holy chocolate heaven.
Slightly overpriced, but unmatched. This little cafe has a tiny menu, big prices and everything your molten, chocolate-baked, fluffy, gooey heart could ever need.
And they won't hear you when you say the cake, drizzled with caramel and served with a side of vanilla ice cream is too sweet. -There's no such thing.
If you need something to cut the sweet, like I did, get an espresso. It worked wonders on the sugar's after-effects too.
Marie Harang
Delicious decadent hot molten cake. Top fresh tasty ingredients, and some real thought put into the balance of flavors. I made it my birthday cake this year, and my husband and I absolutely devoured it. The sweet girl working the counter even gave me a candle to blow out. I think I'll make this a yearly tradition.
Sarah Ruth Moore
What a great place to check out, even early morning. Who says you can't have icecream in your coffee before you eat "real" food?! The staff was super friendly and the hot chocolate was a great way to start my day.
CKV
We haven’t gotten our food yet, I am so excited :D
Maggi I.
A very happening place until midnight. A place where the tooth faery will not stop you from visiting to fulfill your sweets craving. The decadent chocolate hot cake with vanilla ice cream was tastefully described on their menu and presented to us to be easily consumed. It was warm, delectable, and delicious. I highly recommend at any time of the day before midnight 😉
David Markley
What a phenomenal way to end a great evening in Ballard! We had their Dark Drinking Chocolate, a glass of milk, and Blood Orange & Nib Panna Cotta. Everything was perfectly prepared and exceptionally tasty. Okay, the milk was just milk, but it paired perfectly with the drinking chocolate. The panna cotta was not too sweet that made it perfect to enjoy together. After an evening at a local pub, this was a great find.
Andre Sevigny
Must try molten lava cakes. Great way to relax after a stroll through Ballard. Dark Decadence cake was delicious.
melissa a
Service is always great the place is cute and quaint. Who doesn't love melted chocolate with the option of boozing it up. The seating gets a little dicey on busy days so get it to go if it's nice out, or use the fridge option to cook it at home and use as much ice cream as you want. We had the smoked chocolate s'mores lava cake. Oh man it was so good and a good enough size to share with another person, also grab a cup of joe and wait for your pretty flower on top to come out (breve art)
Tanay Dutt
Great desserts and fun ambience, however prices are too high and queues are too long. Desserts are incredibly rich, so share between two! A glass of milk is recommended if having the molten cakes. Overall felt like it was more of a one-time-thing.
Shivani Wanjara
EVERY TIME I visit Seattle I have to make stop here..they make the best cake and ice-cream. I do visit them in the morning time , nights can have quite a wait. The molten cake can be rich if you are not used to super sweet stuff..but get one share it, you will not regret it.pair it with nice warm coffee and its a dream. also love the ambiance <3
Caitlin Stone
Hot Cakes is still as good as I remember it being several years ago, and as busy. The service was friendly even though they were swamped. The hot cake of the month (lemon verbena crème frâiche in the center, and ice cream with raspberry jam and lemon verbena meringues) was excellent for a summer variant on such a decadent treat. I hadn't realized just how many drink, snack, and non-hot cake dessert options there are here now, so I'll definitely have to stop in more often. I also love the commitment to local in the sourcing of the ingredients.
Laura Stamp
Absolutely delicious! The smokey chocolate really made the s'mores molten cake and the creme brulee is divine. Love the gluten free options. Chill + relaxing atmosphere.
Van H
If you have a sweet tooth, you've come to the right place. I think each item can be shared between two people because it might be TOO rich for one [normal] person. I got the vegan dark chocolate (not my first choice, but it was recommended to me), and it was delicious. Very warm vibe here.
Pineapple Industries
Wonderful and high-quality desserts! Great option for sweets in Seattle.
Da Greek
Great place. Good locally sourced products. My wife love the crème brûlée and I had to track the bourbon bread putting. Both were excellent. Things run about $10-$12 per person. Portions are very generous and can easily be shared by two people except for the crème brûlée. The chocolate bourbon bread putting could’ve easily been shared with two people and satisfy both. The dessert drinks are excellent and even the desert drinks with booze are good too.
Flaviyan Jerome
Cozy little place. Crowded all the time their creme brulee and seasonal Pistachio cake are amazing. I found the dark decadence to be overwhelmingly sweet. Have the gingersnap milk, soothing..
Krista Hodges
They have a tasty Butterbeer recipe and the molten cakes... H-holy cow they're mouthwatering. 😍 Just go, you'll be happy you did no matter what kind of dessert person you are. …
K Martin
Presentation, and environment was on point!
This establishment serves molten dishes, cake, cookies, ice cream and milkshakes.
The caramel sauces they have here are very creative but we did not like any of them. We tried the Sage, campfire, juniper berry, vegan, and scotch whiskey caramels.
Husband and I tried the warmed peanut butter cookie with ice cream and caramel on top and it was the best tasting dessert I've ever had. So many flavors and very sweet. With that said, I think next time I come here me and the husband will split it into 4ths because afterwards we felt so sick from all of the sugar. This is definitely not a place for those who want to indulge here regularly. So delicious, but so bad for your health. Really wish that they would cut down on the sugar. I've never felt so sick from sugar before. Whatever caramel that was on top of our ice cream was fanatic.
Our daughter had the peanut butter cup molten lava, hers came with ice cream and caramel on the side, she loved that but she did not like the molten. The husband and I also tried the molten and did not like it either.
The person who helped us said that the most ordered things there are the warm cookie with ice cream and the double chocolate molten. Maybe we didn't like the peanut butter cup molten because of the caramel. I think next time if we come back and want to try a molten, we will try the double chocolate one. Will definitely be back for a cookie with ice cream a couple times a year.
Vicki Ho
$13 + tax + tip for a little lava cake plus scoop of ice cream is way overpriced. The cake was also too sweet to even finish the whole thing.
Little Byte
What isn't there to like about chocolate cake, ice cream and cocktails!? Wish there was more seating, but it would take away from the cozy atmosphere. They even have a great retail area with sweatshirts, take home mixes and other great gift ideas. A perfect pit stop after the beach. A true gem.
Matt Woywod
The vegan strawberry milkshake was thicc & juicy 🤤 …
Jia Lei
Awesome desserts and super friendly staff. Really really good chocolate cake and chocolate chunk cookies!
B Surana
Delicious desserts . Quick service.
Tyler Nguyen
Overview:
This dessert shop is one of my favorites! I thoroughly enjoy coming here at night after dinner. The shops are usually crowded at night so getting a seat can sometimes be tricky. The shops are clean, menus are large, and the staff has always been very friendly with me.
Food:
So many choices that all sound really good! One of their most popular items is the warm cookie with vanilla ice cream on top, you can't go wrong with it. I also enjoy many other items such as the brownie or even the ice cream shakes. With every dessert, I also get a mocha coffee which tastes rich compared to your average mochas at other shops. In the end, I highly recommend it!
Lydia LaManna
Delicious chocolate molten cake, $12-14 options plus cookie options, worth a stop after dinner, charming ambiance
Christian Hernández
Molten cakes are really good. The chocolate they use tastes awesome. And the presentation is impeccable.
Trevor Sanders
Best dessert I ever had. 100% worth cheating on your diet. Visit this place or you'll forever regret missing out.
Maggie Olson
YUMMMM!! Must stop here!! Hot fresh cakes with a side of ice cream! So tasty and a great treat after dinner.
Tiphoni Iacolucci
Vegan and loving it! Cashew milk latte, Frankie and Jos vegan Icecream, dry caramel and vegan molten hotcake. Don't even miss the dairy, just amazing.
Conley Leung
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
support great local business!
I have ordered s’mores to go, it still tastes like I used to have it in the store
Liam Grist
Perfect 10pm date spot. Awesome whiskey milkshake (drunken sailor). Sugar rush has been real. Might pass out before I lay it down.
Baby “Baby” Claypool
Food is over priced to be served in paper cups. Employees are nice and the food is good but frankly to bus your table that is a shared table and be served 13 dollar cakes in paper cups is silly. Not worth the price tag
Jeremy Hawkins
I haven't been here in a while, but I just went back today and it's really the absolute perfect place to go at the end of a nice Sunday walking around. The cakes are like the scientifically designed perfect portion for a little treat and you wind up savoring it and taking your time with it, and if you want to go all out and have something indulgent their big cookie with ice cream and caramel has you covered.
Jackson Bean
Amazing hot cakes and they come with some ice cream. A kinda pricey but totally worth it, would recommend the s’mores hot cake. Great gluten dairy free options
Tyler Rohrbach
AMAZING spot to cure a sweet tooth craving. The entire menu is amazing and they serve alcohol to boot! Worth trying the menu
Jonas Abrahamsen
Good and heavy brownie cake which is still soft / uncooked inside! Love it. Ice cream is average but fits for the cake.
Albert Aydin
I wanted to rate this 1000 but that wasn't an option. Delicious cakes that are rich with chocolate and flavors and unicorns. I need more in my life
Mahdi Heidarizad
Molten chocolate cake was great. It was a bit over cooked but still so good. Ice cream was good too.
Elbert Perez
Yummy gooey hot cakes. I got the dark chocolate cake but the hazelnut is the better option because of the balance of flavor and sweetness
Pranav Bachu
The cold-smoked chocolate is very weird. My friends and I didn’t like it but the rest of it was fantastic.
Mindy S
Vegan molten chocolate cake with vegan ice cream made with cashews and burnt Carmel sauce. Perfect amount to share with your love! $12
Rohana Tooth
It was a fun experience, beautiful presentation, but found the dessert to be a bit underwhelming for the price (~$16 for one shared between 2 people)
From the mouth-watering descriptions to the long line, there was a lot of build up for something I wouldn't buy again. We appreciated the locally sourced ingredients and the attention to detail in the atmosphere. However, I'd go somewhere else for my sweet tooth
Shambhavi Balasubramanian
Recommend the dark decadence molten lava cake. Pretty busy day place and limited seating but definitely worth the wait.
Dan H
If you're looking for decadent cookies and treats, you HAVE to check out Hot Cakes.
Picked up the warm peanut butter cookie with candied peanuts and ice cream...TOTES delish 😍
My wife got the smoky s'mores and I enjoyed that one more than the peanut butter.
The outside seating is very inviting and relaxing.
Also, BUS YOUR OWN TABLES 🙏🏽
Tassia Bezdeka
This was delicious, no question there. Really glad the cashier clarified about the Smores hot cake being made with smoked chocolate and having a sample... That flavor isn't for us!
Mark Morgan
Very tasty and the staff was friendly. Note that there is not a lot of room so you have to wait outside if full
Vy N.
Spectacular experience every time. I come probably on a weekly basis. I blame my sweet tooth and unfaltering love for chocolate, which this place never fails to satisfy with their extensive menu of shakes, molten lava cake, cookies, and other goodies. They also have savory items & cocktails. 10/10 would recommend (which is also the price of their signature dish, the Dark Decadence cake). Good ambience. Can get busy, and you’ll see why. Service is always friendly & attentive.
Garrett King
Great desserts, pricey but makes sense for the quality and location!
Hailey Oppelt
Oh man everything here is SO RICH. Honestly, too rich. If you’re into that, go for it, but just know what you’re signing up for. I can’t eat more than 1/3 of the molten chocolate cake thing without getting sick.
Kim Ray
Yummy vanilla ice cream and great vibes

Finally went to Hot Cakes last night with a friend of mine. I know everyone is talking about the deserts; and the boozy milkshake was good. However the vegan grilled cheese with caramelized onions was incredible! Full of flavor and the onions were grilled to caramelized perfection. Even if you're not vegan, don't let that deter you from trying a really well-made grilled cheese. I'm dairy sensitive, so I'm trying different versions of vegan dairy alternative items. This was definitely a hit.😊
The Drunken Sailor Milkshake was good. It was really super thick and the added whiskey was extremely subtle. For my taste, I would have liked to taste more of the whiskey; for more of a peanut butter and whiskey fusion. If you like the taste of alcohol, I would suggest asking them to pour a little more in with the milkshake.

Extremely busy, flooded with students. Good joint for a late-night chocolate binge.
Derrek “Ajay” Lee
Everything tasted great and they have an interesting selection of chocolates.
Leslie Dymond
I ordered a birthday cake for my husband here and the experience was amazing from start to finish. Every staff member is so kind and welcoming and helpful. The food is worth every penny and skillfully crafted. This is a must if you are visiting or have friends or family come into town. The menu rotates with the seasons so you always have something new to look forward to as well as reliable standbys. Can't express enough how much I love this place!
Boby Kay
Very friendly staff. Cheerful and witty. Made my bad day amazing. Thanks.
B D
Delicious! Don't think about it just roll thru. U won't regret it.
Tom O'Neill
Definitely worth a try. The cakes are tasty and rich enough that you probably want to share one with at least one other person. IMO the drinking chocolates are trying too hard to be different (herbs, fir oil, etc.) and the side flavors overwhelm the chocolate. I wonder if they'd be able to make one with just dark chocolate and a little of their excellent caramel. The drinking caramel has a great caramel flavor but is really sweet.
Michelle
I loved it! It is dog friendly and the people who work here are great too. They have a ton of different options. I also liked that you could order milk here because some of the lava cakes were really really REALLY sweet. They have a lot of alcoholic beverages as well as teas and non alcoholic drinks as well. I would recommend it to locals and visitors
Hans Fritz
This place is awesome. The desserts are ridiculously good - decadent to the max - but balanced and creative. The drinks are delicious as well! This is the place to come if you’re trying to curb a sweet tooth or experience artfully constructed desserts from locally sourced ingredients. If you haven’t been before, welcome to your new vice.
Russ Lacuata
Visiting family member in Seattle and my niece took me here for dessert. Amazing dessert spot. Their take of a molten lava cake is addictive. The caramel and chocolate flavor could not be more perfect. The ice cream provides a great balance from the chocolate. Its pricey but so worth it.
Mariah Belgrod
Walking up to Hot Cakes was a rush of adrenaline! The warm welcoming aesthetic only grew greater upon opening the door to smell rich, mouthwatering chocolate! The menu selection was well placed on a wall chalkboard and described to know exactly what you are getting. It was not very busy inside, so we were greeted by friendly staff. I decided on the original Dark Decedance and my SO got a Butterbeer. It was estimated to be 10-15 minutes wait (because everything is fresh), but my hot cake came out in less than 10 and was there and ready to eat. For the richness level, I felt as if it were well portioned for 1-2 people to share between the cake and ice cream served alongside. If you're used to a lava cake with more cake then molten, this will be a different experience as I'd say the ratio is 70% lava and 30% cake (which I loved). The Butterbeer is not to be missed too, served room temp with every Potterhead's dreams coming true. With your choice of sparkling wine, or local favorite Rachel's Ginger Beer. See you soon for late night cravings!

It was crowded, with the line to order food pouring out on to the street, so you know it's good. We ordered almost everything off the menu to sample and it was all delicious. My favorites were the chocolate pannini and the chocolate pudding but the menu changes regularly so I'm sure each visit would be a new experience. A new favorite dessert spot!
Joshua Osiris
This place is awesome. I super loved the decor - it's very PNW. Very much brick/wood/chalkboard vibe. They make the lava cakes on the spot and they've got some amazing menu choices. They still get 5 stars but I do wish there was more than two beers on the menu. (they have plenty of wine and alcohol shakes to choose from granted)
10/10 will do again.
Yasir A
Wow 🤩 my favorite cake and ic cream ever, great service and fast, friendly 👍🏻💯 …
Allie Welsh
Yeah. It's small. It's Ballard. If you want to enjoy the amazing desserts this place offers, you are going to have to wait for a bit. Seriously, anything on the menu is good. The space is adorable. If boozy milkshakes are on the menu, do yourself a favor and get one. Life changing. Visionary.
Farrah Khan
Amazing dessert spot! They take the ordinary molten lava and make it new again. The caramel is addictive and the chocolate flavor could not be more perfect. It is a bit pricey but worth the cost - you don't get the quality of cakes like this elsewhere (I'm a New Yorker, so I can attest to that!)
Jennilee
Known for their Molten Cakes with Boozy Shakes and Floats!
My favorite on the menu would be their Peanut Butter Cake with a chunk of surprise in the middle. It is enough to share if you're coming after dinner, but if you're feeling greedy...order one for yourself!
The cake comes out in a piping hot mason jar and a scoop of ice cream on the side with sprinkles of peanut and peanut butter. Really amazing and really rich!
Hot Cakes accept card and cash. If you use your card for payment, they will automatically ask for a tip, which is a little awkward. I always do custom tip because I don't believe in tipping until the end of my meals for the full experience.
The decor is warm and rustic.
Huge Cookies are also available here with a punch card to get a free cookie in the future, yum!
Quick Facts:
-you will be expected to clean after yourself
-self serve water
-one restroom available
-dog bowl (water) available
-outside benches
Overall, a great place to stop by for your chocolate craving! Get there before 10PM
Chocolate goo, goo, goodness!!!
Brian Deal
This was the perfect end to the night, after my wife and I explored the Ballard beer scene. We sat at the bar for a good view of the behind the scenes buzz. The restaurant has a hip feel, and the molten hot cakes were heavenly.
My wife had the s'mores cake, which was extra neat because we were able to watch them toast the marshmallow and the ice cream was perfect to pair with each bite.
I enjoyed peanut butter cup cake. The molten chocolate cake also came with delicious vanilla ice cream and peanut butter fudge. Overall it was a great place to end the night.
Keith Bachman
Fun little place to get a fresh baked dessert, ice cream, and cappuccino. Super nice staff, interesting minimal decor, and the dessert was quite nice.
Isaiah Huntington
I have gone there at least half a dozen times and every time I do I am reminded of how incredible it is. Definitely not super cheep, anywhere from 10-12 dollars for a hot cake but I never eat one alone. They are so rich and come with a scoop of ice cream, so I recommend splitting it with someone else. Couldn't recommend this more!
Drew Dowling
Very pricey, but good food. I got the PB Cup lava cake and it was good, but I would try something different if I went back. I was in from out of town, but wouldn't return mainly because I didn't think the food was good enough to justify spending that much on it. Basically one semi large scoop of ice cream and a small lava cake. I split it with my wife and was content after, but could have easily eaten it on my own, but I'm a big dessert person.
Lizanne Venneri
I don't know that there is anything I've tried here that I don't like. The cakes are rich and balanced nicely with a scoop of cold ice cream and their bread pudding is simply amazing; the perfect balance of crispy, caramelized topping, hot, sweet center and creamy ice-cream to round it out. The only challenge here is the size of the cafe and when it's busy, you have to be willing to stand and/or wait a bit.
Sean Freund
Very tasty. I ordered something slightly off menu and the staff accommodated my request and it was delicious! My milk shake was great, I tried some cookie and it was gooey and good. It's a chill place to sit and grab some wi-fi. I'd recommend it
Jeffrey Pooley
Excellent dessert experience. I say experience because this wasn't just a place to grab something sweet. We got the peanut butter molten chocolate cake and the smores milkshake. The molten cake was the best I've ever had--the peanut butter was sweet and flavorful and the cake was a warm mess of chocolatey goo that paired well with the ice cream. The shake was really interesting, featuring their "smoked" chocolate, it literally tasted like a smore with burnt marshmallows. The shake was an experience I'm glad I had but would probably not order again.
Jo Brill
Delicious and offering many GF and V options. Efficient ordering and fun outdoor seating. Glad it fit into our 96 hours in Seattle-land!
Autumn Lafferty
Holy HOT damn. Hot cakes was superb. I was happy to find that they had a vegan option of their chocolate hot cake served with non dairy ice cream. A cozy and vibrant atmosphere dedicated specifically to delicious desserts? Yes please!
Ana Gabriela Espino
Loved the desserts and the place! Super cute!
Nathaniel Wickham
Amazing! One of my favorite dessert shops in Seattle. I often bring visitors here after a dinner out in Ballard.
It can be crowded, so either plan to go during non-peak hours or expect to wait in line.
All of the cakes are good. If you’ve been before and had some of the cakes, try something from the seasonal menu—it’s changed quarterly.
Selena Chu
Small and cozy space. Must try s’mores hot cocoa and peanut butter cup! My favs!
Aurelio Rodriguez
Perfect dessert place after a lackluster experience at La Carta de Oaxaca. I had a smores cookie and split a peanut butter chocolate hot cake with my wife as well. Great COVID precautions in place as well as attentive service.
Yulia “YK” Korotkova
Your Uber Eats menu doesn't match your actual menu. Otherwise a great place for a little treat:)
Edit: it matches now, thank you!
Danielle Marie Strand
Walk the talk? Yes, they do. From sustainable, organic, humane local food sources to the sturdy, reusable dishes and bench/bar seating, Hot Cakes is clearly all about community. (Don't worry introverts: there are a few single tables -- though probably you're better off wandering through the neighborhood of you don't want to be surrounded.) Oh, and did I mention their food? Good grief. Best chocolate creations and housemade vanilla icecream I've had since... grandma's Christmas fudge. Seriously. Are they a bit swanky about it? Yes. You'll find smoked this and delicately caramelized that -- and it will be completely worth it. Staff are sensitive to this and will inform you of unexpected flavors, along with tastings, to ensure your satisfaction. Go there for a date, or to treat yourself. You'll thank me.
Shaughney R
A bit pricier than other sweet shops but you get what you pay for. Inventive creativity dominates the sweet offerings. Butterbeer to warm the soul was my personal menu highlight, but one cannot go without mentioning the jar of smoked chocolate chips at the counter, staff friendliness or array of lava cakes. A+
Katherine Czaplicki
I always enjoy my experience at Hot Cakes! Great desserts and boozy milkshakes. The desserts are quite pricey, but totally worth it. Just remember to order milk to go with your molten cake.
Danielle du Preez
The vegan hot cake was probably the best thing I have ever eaten.
Christine Elzey
If you dislike cake, or chocolate, or molten lava baked goods, you may not like it here. If not, though, there is a very good chance you will be happy at this place. Yes, a little small, and the point of the cake is to get it hot from the oven and eat immediately, so staying for a table is extra desirable if you feel like waiting. If you have the time to spare, I definitely don't see why not!
Preston Stell
What a fun place! The desserts are so good and it is a nice area to just walk around. I had a shake that had single malt scotch in it. It doesn't get much better than treats like these! Go as soon as you can!
Amanda P
A delicious store that offers a variety of cakes and ice cream, to include vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and soy free ice cream and a chocolate hot cake. The line will be long, even at 9 pm, but it is worth it. so enjoy the vibe, the service, and the food. Heck they even have boozy milkshakes with a vegan option.
Alyssa Tate
The cakes are really great & I enjoy the local aspects of the ingredients used. The price tag is a little on the high side for the portion size, but as a novelty dessert place I am not surprised. A unique idea in a market dominated by frozen desserts. Really great on a cold, wet Seattle night!
Taufik B
Yummy..... they made their own nutella very delicious and all ingredients are organic
Tyler Rohrbach
My favorite sweet spot! Such amazing sweat treats and boozie smoothies....nothing better
Joe Hicks
Cakes are good to great. Milkshakes are very good. Grilled cheese is not worth it. Whole menu is expensive. Lots of hipsters and "beautiful people" who are a bit unfriendly. Loud music. Slow service. Long wait times. I can understand that the last three are part of their brand, but the structure of the kitchen is inefficient. Examples of inefficiency are bartenders who don't know how to make drinks and multiple people handling an order (if you have only one till, you should have one primary order taker). The wait for food and the lack of tables makes it so that you are pressured by new, unserved customers to quickly finish your food while other unserved customers awkwardly wait in a crowded and poorly managed space. Another tip: changing the pre-packaged food display area (which has low sales but still could offer a few of the most profitable things) so as to add more seats as well as having the staff be more effective so that food wait times are a little less would probably have a more dramatic effect on customer turnover and customer experience than they think. They can still have a high end and mindful experience while being operationally smooth.
Elliot Miller
So tasty! A bit pricey, but it's due to superior quality. Everything we got challenged my taste buds in the best way. All the utensils/dishes were washable/compostable. I appreciate an environmentally conscious shop.
The machta ice cream crust. Wow
Austin Graff
Hot Cakes is a cool spot in Ballard with amazing dessert. It's very slick looking with several tables and bar seating for you to enjoy your dessert. We ordered the peanut butter molten cake and a chocolate chip cookie. Both came with ice cream and both were very rich and amazing. If you are coming from dinner, one dessert should be enough for two people.
Warning: They have free samples of smoked chocolate chips. Do not try it. It is NASTY!
Karina García
I love this places. The one in Capitol Hill is my go to for writing while having a nice coffee and sandwich. They have great sweet treats. The molten chocolate cake is their speciality. The only thing I don’t like about them is that they only have sugar or a syrup to add to the coffee and tea. It would be great if they could have some stevia alternative. Otherwise I would give them the 5 stars
g sat
Their Dark Decadence is to die for. Just like be this place. We visit this place quite frequently and have always gotten great food and service. Would rate them 10 stars if I could. We have also tried few of their drinks, and loved them too. But nothing beats their Dark Decadence, totally worth the 15 minute bake time.
Matt Zaharias
The seasonal desserts are really good. And of course... the deep, dark chocolate lava cakes from which Hot Cakes draws its namesake.
Can be extremely busy, especially with tourists. Great spot to sit down and slowly enjoy a perfect decadence when it is calmer.
Karl Bessey
Just steer clear of the s'mores cookie or anything the could suggest smoke. It will taste like bacon and is overpowering and will linger despite all the brushing and mouthwash. Otherwise I always enjoy my visits here. It's a good spot for a sweet end to an evening with a sweet person.
Gaurav Jindal
Loved the hot chocolate cakes. Worth the wait to find a spot inside ! They get you these hot cakes which are best enjoyed with the ice cream sides which come along the cake. I believe they bake the cake fresh for you. Price for these cakes was $11 ish as of writing this review.
Cocktail, beer and other beverages like tea and coffee available too . Will come again.
Ruth Dowling
The cakes were a little overpriced for how tiny they were but super rich and delicious! I don't recommend the smoked chocolate unless you really like liquid smoke. We got the Nutella and the peanut butter cakes to share with 4 and it was the perfect amount!
Tooba Shaikh
Decadence at its best. Love their cakes and shake. Meringue cookies and cookies and milk. Very hearty and rich. Something unique that they have are smoked chocolate chips. I wish they had a non alcoholic version of the butter beer.
Randy Collins
Popular place. The service was quite slow, and our vegan molten chocolate was very undercooked. It had only the thinnest skin of cake and the rest was liquid. I didn't realize that this was due to it being undercooked until someone else complained and had theirs taken back and properly cooked, so there was a correct ratio of cake to molten chocolate. Too late for me, as I had already eaten the hot liquid. For the $12 that they charge, their cooks should be trained to cook them perfect every time.
Joe Costello
Got the s'mores molten lava cake and the creme brulee - both delicious with the latter among my faves ever!
Ivy Thompson
Really delicious, and this is coming from someone who isn’t that into chocolate. I had the s’mores cake and appreciated the combination of flavors. The cake was a little Smokey which was nice, and the ice cream + chocolate + marshmallow was all really lovely.
Lucy Hewes
Woah there. I’m not a dessert person, but the dark decadence is INSANE! I would recommend sharing though as it’s so rich, but if you love desserts you’ll probably be okay ^_^ has the seasonal roasted ‘mallow milk too which went with the dish perfectly!
tess
Very good molten lava cakes! Also try the rhubarb pudding. That was awesome. The shop is always crowded. Every time we go here, there's a line outside and the place is packed. Not enough tables and chairs. The business seems to be doing fairly well. Time to look for a bigger place? A little bit expensive too. For the price, I wish the cakes a bit bigger.
Katie Yamada
It's tiny, hard to find seating and the line is always out the door. But if you've got a sweet tooth you should probably stop by and give this place a shot. Obviously they're famous for their molten chocolate cakes, they also have butter beer and boozy milkshakes!
Demi Marsh
Omg so so good! Had the s’mores molten cake and amaze balls!!!! Also the hot chocolate is like drinking a delicious milk chocolate bar!!! Rich and yum!
Jon Klem
Definitely a treat-yo-self kinda place. It's small, and there's always a crowd, so invite a stranger to share a table and indulge in one of their specialty cakes. All their ingredients are high quality, and the desserts are made with a lot of care.
Stephen Kwo
Right when you walk in, you'll feel that things are done right. From the menu to the attitude of the people that work there. Sure things are not perfect but things are thought out.
After the excitement of figuring out how you're going to gain a few pounds, you're hit with the stress of figuring out where to sit. Amazingly you'll realize that everyone will get seated by the time your food is ready.
The chocolate molten cakes are a bit too sweet for me but you can't go to Disneyland and complain that everyone is too friendly.
Philip Dawsey
Amazing molton chocolate cake with rich ice cream and caramel sauce! These are really hard to make and they do it perfectly to order so it takes 15 min to get once you order. The smoky milk shake is also soooo good and insanely rich but if you get one thing, do the cake.
The grilled cheese is only ok so definitely recommend dessert. Just do it!
Alexander King
After waiting in line for nearly 30 minutes, we were able to order our Cakes. We ordered their standard dark chocolate cake and their S'mores cake. The dark chocolate was delicious and the S'mores was kind of gross. Their smoked caramel sauce just tasted burnt... Other than ordering the s'mores, it was great time! It is a great place for underage people to feel like their are in a bar scene without actually being at a bar!
Vidura Stich
Superbly amazing environment, very comfy and inviting setting. The dark chocolate drink was out of this world.
Jesse Winters
This is my kind of dessert! I love the variety of choices, and I've loved everything I've tried from the molten chocolate cake to the s'mores to the chocolate chip cookie. Be prepared for a wait if you come by late at night on a weekend.
CJ Rocks
Meh. Molten cake and ice cream is good . s'mores tastes like the campfire more than marshmallows etc. Group agreed it satisfied our sweet tooth and was fun to say we tried once but don't foresee an urge or craving to go back. Cute ambiance and coffee was good.
Melissa Y
Love the cake in a jar concept, but at $7.50, this tiny cake is a bit steep. The hubs and I shared the house specialty, the 'Dark Decadence,' and in 4 bites total, we were done. It comes out piping hot, as each cake is baked to order. Though I enjoyed my cake and ice cream, for the price, I just expect to get more.
John Russell
If you happen to find a parking spot and a seat make sure you get the chocolate molten cake.
Jonathan Avner
Wow! Excellent dessert and when have a GF person in your crowd, was a win! Couldn’t tell the chocolate chip gf cookie was gf. Would be on the list for a return trip.
Emily Koch
Extremely delicious. Stopped here after eating dinner. Long lines but hey, if the food is good it's worth the wait. They warned us it would be at least a 15 minute wait for our cakes. We ordered to go because there was nowhere to sit... Would be better in a larger place!
Christine Tran
We passed by Hot Cakes after dinner at Ballard Annex Oyster House. Intrigued by the long lines, we decided to check it out.
We shared the dark decadence. The dark decadence is a chocolate molten cake with a side of vanilla ice cream, salted caramel drizzle, and bits of toffee. It was rich and chocolatey. The ice cream was a perfect balance.
-Long line that moves fairly quickly
-bus your table when you're done. all dishes go to the back left area
-self serve water station
Kyle McCausland
If you want dessert this is the place to go. I recommend the creme brulee or chocolate cake, which it's basically an undercooked souffle, delicious. Be sure to try the smoked chocolate chip s on the counter before you order anything Smokey though cause it's pretty potent.
Jeremy Widelitz Cutler
Exactly what it sounds like it's going to be. The cakes are great, not too big so as to make you feel bad about your health routine (though it maybe should). Lots of flavor and nice varieties. The shake selection is also great, but I will say that about anywhere with tasty alcoholic shakes.
Mei Mangalindan
The milk shakes are my favorite...and usually get the salted caramel, but this Basil Mint Cookie was a must try. I tend to bring the caramel jars as tokens from Seattle when I am traveling and visiting friends/family. It tends to be very busy in the evenings, so come during the afternoon before the rush. The staff is very attentive and answer every patrons' questions.
Georgina Sanchez
Absolutely love both Hot Cakes locations! Fresh Minimal ingredient Chocolate Molten Cakes with Vegan options! Love their Boozy milkshakes! Everytime we have visitors we take them to Hot Cakes. The Capitol Hill location has more seating than Ballard but quality is the same.
Lexi Sevigny
Scrumptious lava cakes! Very decadent chocolate pairs perfectly with vanilla ice cream and a little crunch for the perfect dessert anytime!
Jaclyn Nord
So delicious - I suggest sharing, it’s so rich! Gluten free options! Staff is friendly!
James Malcolm
Very tasty and over the top flavor and quality. Way to spendy. 11$ for a small cake and a small scoop of ice cream. Should be 8. 3 buks for a cookie? Come on. Good quality but wint go back because of price.
Pam Hawk
Great chocolate cakes. Plus cocktails and boozy shakes... Who can ask for more on a nice night out... Ok, main meal food goods are all over the neighborhood. But if you want a chocolate end for the night this is the place.
Sarah Quay
Just. Wow.
There are some very explicit things I could say to articulate my feelings for Hot Cakes. Just go there. Experience it for yourself.
The price was high, but the cake is so decadent and rich. My husband and I shared one.
He admitted romantic feelings for the cake.
Beth
Delicious and slightly overpriced lava cakes come with a scoop of vanilla honey ice cream. There are vegan and gluten-free cakes available. Get ready to get cozy at a big table with your fellow patrons at shared tables because this place is packed in the evenings.
Kwang Kim
Meh. They try too hard to be better than others. It's sort of in your face kind of taste. Too many flavors mixed in. Of course it tastes good at the first bite. But after few more bites, it's just way too much. They are open late to attract after dinner customers I guess. I'd rather go to Besalu for some simple pastry.
Spandana Gangisetty
Their chocolate pistachio molten cake is to die for. I wish it was a regular on the menu. Presentation is always impeccable.
Kahla Moonlock
They have butterbeer here and it's so good. I got the s'mores cake and it was delicious. It was pretty busy for 9:30pm on a weekday and warmer inside than I'd prefer, but I'd love to go back and try more things.
Emily Singh
I went while in Seattle on a work trip because of the rave reviews, but honestly was disappointed. I got the chocolate hazelnut molten cake. I was anticipating ooey gooey, fudgy cake with a molten morsel in the center, but what I got was an unimpressive, slightly burned on the top, crust of baked material surrounding a huge volume of melty goo. This thing was at least 95% filling, maaaaybe 5% "cake." Was it Nutella-y and chocolatey and are both of those things delicious? Yes. So was it a terrible experience? No. But I would NOT recommend anyone travel across town for or pay $11 for these cakes.
S Max Reiter
Hot Cakes is my fav! My first to experience was at the Capitol Hill location during March when I was visiting. I was very reluctant to come in because I didn't believe the hype and I didn't know Seattle's bakery scene is amazing! I had the dark decadence molten lava cake, a boozy milkshake and a delicious beer. The second trip I just made I fell in love with the cookies. I want to relocate just so I'm able to get more goods from Hot Cakes.
Murtaza Ghiya
The ambience of the place is great. The selection of items was good and minimal for ease of choosing. Personally felt the place is very expensive.
Lucas Duffey
Smore cake was very rich, but tasty - they use smoked chocolate for an unusual flavor. peanut butter cup molten cake was terrible. Strawberry milkshake was mediocre and extremely overpriced. Super loud music with high bass. Its unique and worth trying at least once. Wifi password: caramel98107
Andrew Moyse
Venture into these hallowed grounds and be glad you did. The NW drinking chocolate is a smokey dark deep cup of amazingness and the boozy shakes always delight. Don't forget to share the creme brulee, even though you won't want to. If you're reading this, cancel whatever plans you had and make dessert at Hot Cakes a new tradition. Seriously.
Andrew Miron
Extremely tasty desserts with high variety. The milkshake was perfectly made, being drinkable but still thick. Will be returning and trying the cookie and ice cream next time.
D A
Great lava cakes. It's the most go to place in Seattle. They love the earth here and gender neutral bathrooms. All organic products including organic Seattle feel. Great cakes and shakes. Hotter than hell in there. The temperature in there is not earth friendly.
Anum Ilyas
Hot cakes is sooooo good. Friendly staff and hot yummy desserts with icecream. I take everyone who visits us there. There peanut butter chocolate cup is delish. And one of my other favorites is their chocolate peanut butter cookie. Yummm!
Nam Nguyen
This is a diabetic chocolate factory. Everything is delicious - but everything is ridiculously sweet. Borderline overly sweet. I've had things from the drinking caramel, to smore desserts, cookies, and molten lava cakes - three bites and i want more but when that sugar high kicks in and you feel almost sick from eating so much - you take one more bite and then regret kicks in. The only saving grace from a diabetic coma is the shot of whole milk you can get on the side to wash the guilt and gluttony down.
Share if you can - get one - get them all if you can't decide. But get it one way or another. They are usually open late too so it's a great place to get some sweets before you try to sleep :)
Bettie Freiberg
Such a awesome place to stop Loved their cakes. I will come back
Britt Coy
Local ladies making wholesome, tasty treats - you can't beat Hot Cakes! The classic, ooey gooey chocolate cakes are soooo delicious, but our daughter also goes nuts for the cookies (served warm), and my husband and I are die-hard fans of the boozy shakes. If you're over in Ballard, you must pop in here!
Andrew Blackham
Hot cakes went from being a pretty good chocolatey explosion in the mouth for $6-7 to the most over-priced two-bite chocolate dessert for $10+. Seattle's minimum wage hike is probably to blame, but I'd be extremely disappointed if I came to hotcakes, spent $10-15, and got an overpriced lava-cake as my dessert. The hot cakes are not bad, but they also aren't a premium to your typical restaurant dessert.
Vickie Chan
Who can say no to some hot and gooey chocolate molten lava cake? The line is out the door but its so worth the wait! This place serves different varieties of chocolate molten lava cakes, along with shakes, coffee, and alcohol. Perfect place to go for dessert!
Brenda Gardner
Really amazing vegan options, everything else looks good too! I had the molten chocolate cake, it's delicious and the vegan caramel ice cream that came with it was a great accompaniment.
Fremont Deli
I love their desserts but they used to serve it a ceramic dish. Why they changed the presentation? If I'm going to pay the same price and have out of a compostable container I will stay home and buy it from the grocery store.
Noelle
Best grilled cheese ever! Lava cake and ice cream is so good that I want to try everything on the menu. My daughter and I love this place!
Rachel Han
Not sure what the hype is all about.
Food: Got the milk chocolate hazelnut molten cake. Had nutella in the middle. Actual cake ratio to nutella was not proportionate (I would say 2:5). Had eaten most of my cake with plenty of nutella in each bite and still had tons of nutella left. At least give me a straw if you're going to give me excess liquid. Don't get me wrong, I love nutella but that proportion did not work. Cake was quite dry - it had the consistency of cake that has been sitting out for a day, unwrapped in the kitchen. Sweetness of the whole thing was just enough. The only thing they probably did right was the citrus crumble that came with the ice cream because we all know that citrus works elegantly with nutella. Vanilla ice cream was just OK - little watery. If you're going to charge me $10 for that whole thing, at least serve the cake properly and not in a environment-friendly cup (the thing you baked it in). Show that you made that cake with pride and present it beautifully in a glass cup or something presentable. If you're going to serve it in that, better have made damn sure that cake was moist.
Service: You pay and sit down. Wait for someone to bring you your order. I sat at the bar because I was alone. I've worked in the food industry before, I know we can get tired so when it's not busy we want to rest. I get it. But don't sit NEXT to a paying customer AT the bar while chatting with your coworkers. Where is the common sense? At least go in the kitchen and socialize if you're going to be THAT loud next to me while I'm trying to enjoy the food I just paid for. Not appropriate at all. If I were the owner of this establishment, I wouldn't allow that. Seats outside the kitchen (except the bar if there is a seat) should always be for paying customers only.
Hormoz Khosravi
Great deserts and nice staff
Melanie Meyer
Decadent, rich, chocolatey yum yums. The fancy lava cake you didn't know about, but need to have.
Keyndra McCormick
Very tasty treats! Good atmosphere, lighting and I liked their additional merchandise you could purchase like chocolate syrups or sweatshirts. We will be coming back!
Bruce Meyers
Amazing dessert. Old fashioned caramel sauce is the best.
Zeuz Olympus
Heaven on earth. If you love chocolate, stop here. You will come back for seconds
Will Scott
Fancy desserts - a nice place to go after dinner with friends, though often crowded. Their 'thing' is a line of custom caramel syrups, which are included in many of the molten-cake and cookie items. They also have coffees, hot chocolates and milkshakes.
Aishanee Wijeratna
Delicious made-to-order lava cakes and other treats! The original darks decadence cake is always a good idea, but the milk chocolate hazelnut is great as well.
Smittyadventures
Vast menu with a diverse group of items from which to chose. Very rich and sugary flavors. I had the amazing grilled chocolate sandwich while my friend enjoyed some other delightful treat.
Drew N
Who ever thought a niche place that only (mostly) served molten lava cake would be so awesome? They also make some pretty unique milkshakes with alcohol as well. Great late night spot as well.
Bachu Sai
Best desert stop in Seattle and Ballard area
vic pugs
Hot lava cakes made to order. The hazel nut milk chocolate was a bit too sweet and the dark decadence was perfect. Order at the front and find your own seating.
Crystal Ellington
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING creme brûlée—which is my favorite dessert ever. Very kitschy, intimate location and super friendly staff. I’ll definitely be back!
Jake Aufderheide
The cookie + ice cream dish is EXCELLENT. Definitely enough to share with another person.
I actually don't recommend the molten cakes... they were pretty meh in comparison.
S BoweRs
Always a treat! Delicious vegan desserts that are incredibly well put together.
Scott Mac
They had an amazing 2 for 1 cookie deal at the end of the night and after we closed the place they gave us like 4 more cookies for free... What kind of demon would I have to br to NOT rate this place 5 stars after that kind of love? One without a soul, that's what kind. Oh, it was ridiculicious, too.
Emily Strom
Lines are usually a couple minutes, but totally worth it! The classic chocolate chip cookie with ice cream is amazing and the whiskey milkshake is delicious! Hard to go wrong here.
April Rodrigues
Excellent! Fresh, local ingredients, and a great dessert spot!
doug
Yes we stood in line at 9 pm on a Thursday night, yes it was worth it! Ok it always has a line and it was $9. But we both were full and it was dang good! Line moved fast and we found a place to sit. Cool area.
ccody martin
Every food this place serves is unbelievable! There molten hot cakes dessert is the best dessert I've ever had!! Very good to bring a date, a little pricey but very worth it.
Bethany Robinson
Delicious and decedent, warm smiles from staff echoed in the toasty cakes. Only request would be a little more seating so it's popularity could be enjoyed a little more comfortably.
Cody Gagnon
Went for a tasty special shake! Nutella brown butter toffee ftw!
V Lopez
Delicious wow! Is inexplicable just go and taste it for your self and you will see...
The parking is kinda difficult, the place is packed on weekends and a bit pricey. But just calm down, don't be cheap take your family out and try it is worth it.
Vanessa Villa
We took our hotcake to-go since the seating inside was taken up. It was hot and molten and the perfect shareable, neatly packed with napkins and utensils.
Estefania Velazquez
By far my favorite dessert place ✨🍦🍫 i love the dark decadence cake + the new outdoor set up looks amazing 🤩 …
Mitch Dore
The atmosphere was outdoorsy with plaid and wood everywhere the desserts were delicious The peanut butter cup ice cream ice cream was absolutely phenomenal the molten cake feed an army of sweet tooth's can feed an army of Sweet tooth. Because it is very rich but compliments the ice cream deliciously.
Sijing Hao
I am definitely a chocolate lover. The molten chocolate cake is just ok. Dont know why it is so famous. But in general, the store is very good for a friends hang out for young people.
Tessa Gomes
Awesome desert place! The molten chocolate cake and boozey milkshakes we're amazing! There isn't a lot of seating so it's better for smaller groups
AppleznBananaz
Cute place for evening dessert. I'm not a big fan of chocolate but what I did like was their icecream with salted caramel and toffee crumbles..soo good!
Emily Ellingsworth
Vegan molten chocolate cake. Literal heaven. So rich. I've never finished it if I ate dinner first. Frozen bake your own cakes also! Yum!
Eric Brooks
Love Hot Cakes, but I do miss the old ceramics that cakes used to be served in. I wish they had more Franky and Jo's options as well (and vice versa).
Christopher Moore
Nice place to have a dessert and drink after dinner. Patrons bus their tables and seat themselves. Loud, crowded, atmosphere during prime weekend hours.
Dane Hillard
We stumbled upon this place after walking around the area our first night visiting. We saw there was a fair wait, but it was worth it. We got a pudding and a s'more cake and enjoyed them both deeply!
George G
The Laphroaig and smoked chocolate milkshake is INSANE and so are the molten chocolate cakes
Giovanna H
VEGAN chocolate molten cake with cashew ice cream was very rich but delicious! Chocolate martini was terrible. Great atmosphere and service. Small venue.
Holden Kundrot
Lava cakes paired with ice cream and they are so good! Get the smoky s'mores one, it's rich and delicious 😋 …
Jonathan Li On Wing
One of the best molten lava cakes that I have. Their butter beer was amazing: smooth, complex flavors, and just the right sweetness.
Marcus “DJMarkymark” McKee
Delicous, mouth watering, melty cakes. Whether your a simple chocolate lover or a chocolate peanut butter consiuer this place is for you. Not to mention a delicious dairy free rhubarb milkshake!
Łukasz Chojnacki
Their cakes are the sweetest things I've ever eaten. We ordered just 2 for the whole family (2+1) and we weren't able to eat everything.
Allen-Paul Templet
Nice but can be very busy
Ryan Dean
The desserts here are rich and delicious. The place is often crowded beyond seating capacity and it's kind of pricey. Still, the dessert is incredible.
Mackenzie “Maq” W
Always love Hot Cakes! I'm not big on chocolate so I stick to the creme brulee and I love it!
Carl
Really tasty, but haven't been there for a while since we get enough sweets at home. Prices are slightly on the high side, but still acceptable for the unique experience.
Yan Chao
The food from this place is pretty good. Been here a couple times and my visit has been good. Recommend to others who like desserts.
Matthieu Torbey
One of the amazing molten chocolate cakes in town
Chad Crummer
Wonderful desserts, boozy cherry milkshake was awesome! Line can be long, and space gets very crowded. It's all in the timing.
Matthew Prall
A great local dessert shop that is a must go to when visiting Ballard. From molten lava cakes to milk shakes, you cannot go wrong with any of their desserts.
Vinay Damodaran
Great for dessert people. Good to share the hot cakes, as they are quite intense. Good for a one time or once in two months visit.
Cyrus Howe
It's places like this that make me miss Seattle. Such yummy lava cakes with ice cream. I wish I could try them all. I make it a point to visit each time I'm in town it's so good.
Chandler Ross
Just an ooeey gooey piece of decadent awesomeness. INCREDIBLE and they give you free post cards! All the deserts I tried brought you right to the line of just being to rich but you found your spoon going back for more and more until it was gone.
tiffy hopper
Busy little shop had a line up all night but we were assured it was worth the wait and i can't say i was disappointed. Had the peanutbutter & chocolate so good and decadent.
Kyla Wheeler
Everything is delicious, but it's the boozy milkshakes that keep me coming back. The extra dark caramel and the Laphroaig & smoked chocolate are my favorites.
Hailey Dangel
Absolutely delicious and they have a ton of vegan and gluten free options!
kinjal shah
One of the favorite dessert places in Seattle. Just love their dark decadence cake. Highly recommended.
Yen Duong
Very crowded yet cozy. They have boozy shakes here as well as variations of the hot molten lava cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Janoo Fernandes
I'm sure the cakes are great here, but I've only had the (spiked) butterbeer and it's probably the most amazing thing I've ever drank!
Elin
A bit overpriced, but their cakes are amazing, so its worth a visit if you are willing to spend 20 dollars for a cake and coffee.
Carrie Jordan
delicious! usually crowded after dinner, but totally worth the wait!
Update- since they changed the recipe of the hotcakes, and to a larger size, I didn't like them as much.
Ethan Barker
Good desserts and shakes really busy on weekends
Jeanette Flygenring
Delicious! Nothing else than delicious. Very filling and heavy though, so we always share one with an extra scoop of ice cream. I'm drooling already thinking about it.
Catherine Williams
Delicious cakes. A little on the expensive side. Also FYI, the dark decadance is very rich. It looks small but two people sharing it will have trouble.
Mary Jane
Holy cow. Brownies and ice cream on crack. Seriously rich flavors and interesting plating! We loved this place! So cute inside and BUSY!
Sydney Gerig
Never had a molten cake like these before. They are incredible. Can be hard to find a seat but people usually clear out pretty quick.
Ivan Lodefink
The hot cakes were amazing! It was a very crowded spot though. Every time i've been here it has been fairly crowded. Also, it is a tad expensive.
Brigida Burks
The desserts here taste is so amazing. Love their menu selection and the prices here are always right!

My favorite little artisan style chocolate-themed dessert place. Their molten dark chocolate hot cakes are fabulously delicious.
Jaywant Subramaniam
This place offers good chocolate molten lava cakes with Vanilla icecream.. there is an open bar too. Service is good and place is busy with good ambience..
Michael Madalina
These deserts are super rich, a bit too rich for my liking to be honest. Relatively expensive for what it is, but that doesn’t drop tons of people from going! It’s always packed!
Sean Cenotto
Great cookies/baked goods. Always worth stopping by after dinner in Ballard! Wish they had more space for seating
Aaron Armstrong
Not my cup of molten chocolate, but my wife and friend were very pleased. I'm not into sweets much, but the place smelled great and was very clean.
Ahsan Farooq
Excellent molten chocolate cakes, cookies and ice cream made to order with high quality ingredients. Limited seating space and pricey.
Joanne Finley
Boozy milkshakes and Harry Potter Butter Beer certainly set this little spot apart from any other cafe/bakery. The salted caramel sauce is a 'must buy'.
Asad Khan
This pak e has so many good things. I have been there several times and almost everything I have tried is amazing. Must recommended for desserts
Sahar
Dark Decadence was great.

Got the ice cream on the warm cookie, it was really delicious. Would definitely recommend as a nice dessert spot!
Ankit Singh
Great selection of desserts and sweets for every taste. Almost always busy and difficult to get a comfortable seating place.
Natalia L
Loved the vegan moltrn lava cake with cashew ice cream. The seating was limited but overall a good vibe.
Steve Jackson
Extremely rich and sweet - great on a cold night. My favorite is actually the vegan dark chocolate, the rest are too sugary for me
Lovella Lidke
I am coming here only because of two reasons, first I love this place, second vegan options. It is so amazing I have such place in Seattle)
Nate Pierce
There should be some sort of regulation on a place like this. I am addicted, and its bad. This is the best little spot for an after dinner date night plus there is chocolate so you can't go wrong.
Nate Rowan
Got the hot chocolate and cookie with ice cream. Both were great. Smoked chocolate is interesting, not amazing, not bad, but different. I enjoyed it.
Nathin Bruns
Everything on the menu is amazing! Limited seating, long lines at night, but worth the wait for a great shake, cookie, or molten cake
Tom Mathews
A must go place for a chocolate lover... It can be crowded a bit in the weekend nights, so be patient and come a with a bit of time to spare... Had the chocolate whiskey cake and loved it... Shakes are also great...
Mo Lockwood
Great cakes but gets busy at night. If you plan on going eat a lighter dinner because the cakes are super rich.
Emma Starr
Best dessert place hands down. Whenever anyone is in town visiting this is always where we take them.
Justin Goodman
The boozy shake are the reason I go here. I have never even ordered a hot cake. Five stars for the shakes!
Shaun Kelley
Get their s'mores cakes. They use a smoked chocolate in them and they are amazing. That said you can't go wrong with anything chocolate on the menu.
Eager Eater
Nice folks but the cakes suffer from too much sugar.
Bharath Sharma
Nice place in downtown Ballard. Bit expensive though.
Gabe P-M
The lady at the counter was very nice and I love the food
Melissa Ellis
Yummy! They have the best dark chocolate molten cakes! Very nice atmosphere.

Kim Peterson
For lactose intolerance, the vegan hot cake is delicious--I actually like it more than the regular cakes.
Sabra Fisher
Amazing. Long line. Raving guests exiting. The smell of smoked chocolate and caramel. Great place for a date. Or order in #Postmates
Jessi
Milkshake was great but crazy expensive for the size it was. It wasn't anything exceptional for the price. Smaller space with friendly people.
Deborah Kady
Great deserts with vegan and GF options. Limited seating because it is popular and often busy.
Victor Escalona
Super delicious. It’s expensive but I don’t mind splurging on lava cake, and it’s not something I eat every day.
Simranjit Sra
Because it's chocolate holy grail and they also have chocolate and whiskey !!!
Randal Ketchem
Fantastic molten chocolate cakes. Pricey, but wonderful. Also had one of the best double short Americano's ever.
Mark
Really expensive for what you get. The cake was baked to the container and the center was a little too gooey. Line is usually out the door, so maybe we missed something.
Bianca Penuelas
Prices were too high for the amount given, the top of my cake was burnt and although there was no line, the ambiance was quite boring/low energy - too low for dessert
Heath Smith
The cake was on point, however the “smoked chocolate” taste so bad, I could not even have my s’mores bar. Me not even having all my chocolate says something.
Alex Judd
This place is great for a late night snack with friends. If you're vegan and craving chocolate go to this place!
Kelly Kawamoto

Peanut butter shake!!
Molten chocolate cakes are good too. Skip the giant s'mores, it was the worst item by far.
Dawn Liang
Chocolate lava cakes with really good ice cream - a delicious dessert. Worth a stop if you're looking for more than just ice cream
Kristen Vogel
The food here is so rich and amazing. 10/10. I go here anytime dessert is an option
Dan Krishman
Delicious. I've said enough.
Mathew Schramm
The food is tasty for those that like dessert. It can get very busy so expect a wait on the weekend.
julie robb
There's a reason why both locations are so crowded! Every desert option on the menu is unique and delicious!
Daniel Mundra
Not bad, the cup they use to put the molten chocolate cake could use a rethink. A small amount of the cake was still on it. Maybe ceramic bowls?
Paul Kondratyev
They sell out of their most popular items. The other stuff is ok... too many "seasonal" items... i miss the blueberry cake
Beki Winchel
One of my favorite butterbeers and a lovely, cozy atmosphere to enjoy a delicious volcano cake or other treat.

Sam Hallway
Amazing and rich hot cakes. The portions seem small but truly you get more than enough!
Isaac Gloor
Pretty good place for a stop, but maybe a little expensive for what you get. The drinks are good, but not as good as the prices would make you hope for.
Nilav Ranpara

y chenna
Absolutely loved the molten lava cake with ice-cream. Really nice place for desserts.
Joseph Achman
There's just so much decadent, sugary, carmelly, chocolately, buttery 'yum' here that I just can't even... Go here, eat, eat some more, and some more, and then undo the top button on your pants and go home happy.
Amy G
Everything was delicious, but unless you want imminent diabetes I suggest you share with a friend or two.

These cakes are super rich, super small and super expensive. Not rally my thing, I have been there once, that is enough for me.
Adrienne EMPCeballos
Love! Great dessert place!
Jas A.
It wasn't what I expected. The cake was very rich and too molten. Honestly, I prefer domino's or chili's molten cake. This was too overpriced and underwhelming.
Joseph Gillette
The strawberry pie crust milkshake is one of the best milkshakes I've ever had.
Jordan Bridges
Fantastic desserts, really busy. Don't plan on getting a place to sit
Moin Shaikh
Great desserts, friendly staff. Only negative is limited seating
