Though the end of a rainbow is likely not indicative of the quality of dessert, the fact a double rainbow appeared to end here on my first visit is certainly enough to have me speculating. Custard is the name of the game here, and they do it right. As a native midwesterner, I hold my custard in high regard. Nielsen's delivers custard of exactly the quality I would expect. The line is always long here, and for good reason. The service is pretty quick and decent, especially for a bunch of teenagers. Prices are fine. Currently drive-thru only. My only gripe is they have clear plastic cups. I'd prefer they go back to something that would better hold up to travel (especially given the drive-thru situation).

This place is my favorite.. Not because the workers are nice. Because they're not. Not because they're fast. Because they're not. Not even because it's really nice. Because it's not that either but, their custard is AMAZING. I always find it worth the wait! There is no seating. There's barely any parking. And I've waited 20 minutes to get my custard after ordering. There's some variety of flavors so you can mix it up. It's worth the price, and I don't think the pricing is too high. So if you're a lover of the frozen treat stop by Nielsons! You won't be disappointed!

The custard is very smooth and creamy. If you get an ad-in flavor, be prepared for the artificial flavoring. I was disappointed with the lemon. It was very artificial and disappointing. It was not mixed in well. Also, the line was ridiculously long and cars were trying to get in line from two different entrances and blocking traffic. The staff just seemed to be in slow motion as we watched them prepare custard for cars ahead of us. Probably won't be going back soon.

This place is the smoothest tastiest ice cream in town. We prefer the custard over the concrete if you're going straight chocolate because it is thicker (not as melty) and cheaper.

My wife loves their pumpkin flavored frozen custard... But it is only available near Halloween time... Me personally I think flavored custard is too sweet and definitely over priced. The staff people are friendly and fun to banter with unless there is a long line. My kids and grandkids also love this frozen treat..

I was unimpressed. When I pulled up there were three workers standing around playing on their phones while the other three really worked. The custard was good but it had that sour taste like the machine hadn't been cleaned in a while. I wanted to love it but I just couldn't.

My father loves this place. I'm not personally a big fan of this style of dessert but it's nice to see my father smile for once. Rather than deal with the emotional distance between us by talking about it I might incite the miniscule nostalgia he has for this establishment and capitalize on the joy he rides away with here. Sure I know that little smirk is not for me but when it only cost me $4.75 to finally feel the warmth of his approval I may be able to sleep just that much better tonight.

My sister asked if I’ve had concrete before with zero context so I said no. She laughed, you need frozen custard in your life! The business was recently vandalized and robbed, which explained the broken glass door and boarded up areas. I wanted bumbleberry but settled on raspberry because they were out of it. This seems to be a fun spot in town. The ice cream is pretty good, nothing extra special in my opinion. The best part about my experience was the awesome employees. They were so kind and personable! I like the simplicity of the menu but still a good amount of options. They mixed up our order and let us keep the extra sundae at no charge. I think it’s a good spot to check out!

I ordered a regular lemon concrete. I got a small Oreo mint. I don't like chocolate but my wife does. Here is to you Nielsen's Frozen Custard worker who knows the correct order in spite of myself. Maybe I will come back some day and get that lemon, ... But then again, I'll probably end up with another Oreo.

I'm not from the area, but plan on relocating so I had to see how the local frozen custard stacked up against that of my hometown. I got a strawberry concrete and it was wonderful! If you get a regular size cup make sure you want a ton of custard, because it's BIG! The staff was super friendly and I was in and out within about 10 min with my delicious treat!

We have been coming here like most for 15+ years And has been for the most part 5/5. However the last 3 times I have been there the quality is not what it used to be. I got the flavor of the day cherry chocolate chip and somehow most of it was vanilla. My wife ordered a concrete with the top portion being lemon berry and everything below it was also vanilla. This is disappointing and hopefully will be corrected. I would have said something during my visit but didn't want to wait in the drive through for another 20 minutes as the inside is closed for covid. Edit: Have come back twice since then and seem to have improved quality.

Best frozen custard around. It's sad this location has lost a few of it's flavors. Yet I will keep going because it is amazing custard. Highly recommend going to their diners in St. George and Bountiful. Update 4/30/22 - I don't know if I've grown out of it or not, but it has lost its charm. I think I'm going to the one in South Jordan and see if it has the same charm. So sad, it's like KFC, they lost their way to the bottom line.

If you have never had it you gotta stop what you're doing and go! Its so creamy soft and just right amount of sweet. Their custard is also super reasonably priced. Just be sure when you to the highland location during busy hours to be prepared to wait. The line can stack up down 33rd south.

This place is one of our family favorites. My friend introduced me to Nielsen's back in college, and now my kids love it too! Frozen custard is much richer and smoother than ice cream. If you've never tried it, you definitely should!

You know it’s good when you’re sitting outside in the snow eating frozen custard! We got the mini with brownie chunks. After they’re mixed in it’s actually more like the bigger cup size. Three of us shared and were very impressed! I hope to get back to that neighborhood and try more flavors.

The only reason they don't get five stars is because the inside and outside of the building is not impressive, but the custard... So amazing. It's the best I've ever had. The coconut concrete is my favorite. They don't have a full menu like other locations, just the Frozen Custard. No burgers or other food. But who cares, I go for the custard. Drive thru window only takes cash the last I knew but inside they do take cards. *update* last time we went through the drive through they took cards.

I'm leaving 5 stars because the icecream is AMAZINNNNG! also, super reasonably priced. I would hate to deter people from stopping by because the icecream alone is worth it! That being said, please train the teenagers who work here. They can be extremely slow, rude, and unprofessional. The icecream is never the same size either lol. A small can be an extra large and an extra large can be an extra small! Lastly, yes, we want napkins.

This is our favorite place to go for a summer treat. Better than ice cream, in my view. Their malted chocolate almond custard, arguably their signature product, is outstanding. The place hops on summer evenings for good reason. The place is a hole in the wall, is staffed by high school kids, and there is not much in the way of seating, but there is a bench out front and some standing tables inside, and that's good enough for a casual summer night outing. There is a drive through, too, and they have pints for take-out.

Five star product, less stars on experience. The complaints are that I'm usually going in the evening when everybody else is there. It's not uncommon to be in line for 30 minutes or more. If I'm in a rush, I just don't go. Second, nearly every time I finally get to older, they are out of something I want. The first issue is not a big problem for me, but it may be good for them to send somebody outside to take more orders. The second issue should be controllable by better planning.

Great custard! A little pricey, but good. Right now there is only a drive thru and people (customers) get mad at you if you didn't know their way of forming a line. So don't drive straight into their parking lot, but come in through the Glass House Parking lot. Clearer traffic pattern instructions on parking and drive thru would be helpful.

Haven’t had the best experiences lately... concretes tend to only have flavors and add-ins mixed to the top half of the concrete. All plain custard on the bottom half. This happened to us the last 3 times we have gone to this location.

My husband and I have driven past this place many times, and finally decided to give it a shot. So glad we did! Their icecream is delicious! I had an oreo mint vanilla concrete and my husband had a cookie dough vanilla concrete. We couldn't decide who's was better! It was super busy when we went and waited quite some time before we were able to order, but the wait was well worth it! We will absolutely be back!

Absolutely delightful. Been looking for a good custard place in Utah, or just a custard place in Utah at all, and finally found one. Delicious. Though, everyone knew about Nielsen's except for me apparently. It was crowded at like 230 on a Saturday, though the wait still was not long. Delicious custard. Fun location, kind of dingy, which is definitely my vibe. Would recommend.

Great little local ice-cream shoppe. Unique taste. Would be a good stop for tourists. Quite busy summer nights, Fridays, Saturdays, and Monday nights. No indoor seating. The machines they use are loud so if you have someone in your party with sensitive ears leave them outside while you order.

Incredible frozen custard. My favorite is the Raspberry Oreo. Ordering tips: Order a mini, but select at last 2 add ins and they'll put it in a regular size cup. No where to sit down inside this specific location but there is a convenient cement bench outside large enough to fit several people.

Great frozen custard, but plan on waiting at least 30 minutes in line. I don't go out of my way to go here anymore because I leave empty-handed 80% of the time...at least 10 times in the past six months. Sorry, I'm not going to wait 15+ minutes unless I'm on a date. The typical wait time is at least that long here.

Best summer dessert! So much better than Culvers, I only wish there were more of them around. They always have chocolate & vanilla but the extra flavor changes daily. You can buy pints of your favorites though. I love the caramel cashew and raspberry, hubby likes the lemon. Oreo is okay too.

Overall 5/5 stars. Delicious frozen custard, extremely popular location during the summer, but great year round. Their concretes are fantastic. Nielsen's is a treat. They've been a fixture in the area for many, many years and for good reason. Their custard is fantastic and always fresh-made. During summer evenings the line can become extremely long, and it has become a tradition of sorts for people to sit and wait for their order, enjoying both the custard and the company.

The best, richest, and thickest frozen custard I have tried! You choose chocolate or vanilla and then a mix-in or two. It's an excellent treat for after work or a weekend time-out. The parking lot is tiny, but you can also park south of the building in another lot.

Real Frozen Custard is a big deal. There are very few places that actually make real Frozen Custard. But when it comes to the best of the best Nielsen's has everyone beat by far. It's become quite a tradition to take the family here every so often. They have lots of awesome flavors. I was quite surprised to find my favorite one is lemon. Hands down the best ice cream in the Salt Lake Valley.

Giving it 4 stars simply because, it was good but it was nothing to Hoot and Holler about. It really reminded me of Culver's and their custard ice cream. I'd give it another shot but I would try something else. What I had was good but I'm not really a big fan of Culver's and that was my main concern with it being custard. But there's tons of other things to try, I'm willing to go back a few times and try something else.

We came by last night for some of the famous concrete and we were so stoked we did! The drive through was super fast and we came on a Saturday night. I got coconut and brownie with a vanilla base. It was like a girl scout samoa cookie! My fiancé got strawberry and oreo with a vanilla base which was so yummy! My stepdad got a chocolate base with peanut butter and it was like a delicious Reece's. Will absolutely be going back!

Delicious frozen custard but the customer service is always a crapshoot due to the type of place it is. I have never been treated poorly, really, but the air of ennui amongst the staff is frequently palpable and occasionally uncomfortable. That said, they are pretty quick and have never messed up one of my orders. Usually busy, but very worth it. I can spend 3 days eating a concrete. 😁

Previously, I had this rated at 5 stars. This place has great custard and has been a family favorite for years. Today was a rather bad experience though. We waited in the drive thru line for over an hour to get 2 simple cones. When we got to the window they let us know that 2 of the machines were broken so they only had vanilla. After the wait we were happy to order that anyway. We placed the order, then the window attendant asked us to pull forward and they would bring it out to us. We waited in that spot for another 15 minutes before anyone came out. And when they did come to the car, it was to ask what we had ordered because he had forgotten. We reminded him we ordered 2 vanilla cones. Another 5 minutes go by and then he came out with two cups of vanilla. We reminded him a third time that we wanted 2 vanilla cones. He goes back in and another few minutes went by. Then when he brought out the cones this time, he put the custard into the weather stripping of the drivers window and said "careful they are a bit melty" and once I tried wiping the custard off my car he asked "oh do you want some napkins?" It was another couple minutes till he had those out to us and we were finally on our way. I understand having busy times, and understand that machines can break once in a while, but this time was just really bad. I might look at trying a different location next time. Over an hour to get 2 cones was way overboard. Management needs to work on this.

Friendly and quick service, fantastic ice cream. Not much more I can ask for. Their mini concretes are basically the size of their regular concretes, so be aware if you can't eat a lot!

Best frozen custard, hands down! No store bought frozen custard ever compares, and neither do frozen custards bought at ice cream shops or restaurants. I've been going here with my family since I was a kid and I feel like I've been spoiled for life because of its' greatness! Ice cream was super yummy but the location is way too small for how many people they get. You have 20 people squeezed into the very small location trying to get ice cream. Which I guess would be a bit fine if people weren’t so stupid and let their ice cream melt on the counter while staff is screaming for them to get their ice cream, but that’s not on them 😂

Amazing Custard! This was my first time and I got the Vanilla and orange concrete. It was so good! The only thing that bothers me is how quickly it melts. It seems that if you don’t eat it really fast it becomes a soupy mess. I will definitely go back and try another concoction!

Got introduced to this place as a kid and still love it. I got their seasonal offering of pumpkin and was not disappointed at all. In fact, it magically disappeared long before I even got home. No words could describe what my family and I tasted. I dont even like ice cream and had never had frozen custard. After we received our frozen treats, my family noticed that I was making "mmmmmm" sounds after every bite. I didnt notice until they told me. Chocolate malt with peanut butter 'concrete' is what I had. Perfection has been achieved. They have very high standards as far as keeping everyone safe from covid, so they have a 15 minute line. Believe me when I say that Nielsen's is worth the wait. Thanks Nielsen's!!!!

This location's custard machine is LOUD. And I don't mean just loud, I mean LOUD! Wow, you can't hear a thing in there and it is almost like your head is being knocked on since there is an odd echo. To be honest, it completely colored my experience with their product because it was wholly unpleasant to walk in. The custard was good and the women on staff were nice (I am concerned that they will have hearing loss), but the environment isn't the best. Just drive through if you can, don't go in.

Nielsen‘s frozen custard has got to be the place best explained as the place to splurge. When you want to go out for a really good ice cream, you go there. These guys are very generous with their mix-ins, and amount of ice cream they put in the cup. There is no surpassing the concretes! Brilliant.

Always a delicious treat for any occasion. The vanilla is great choice. Sometimes they are generous with their portions, other times they're normal portions. It gets very popular in the summer, so expect some longer lines in the drive-up or walk-in.

I have been going to Nielson's most of my life and it is amazing. Concretes are so good with many possible combinations. Can get in half size or full. If getting chocolate ask for the chocolate base instead of syrup. Well worth the calories.

The custard cannot be beat. However, the drive thru is PAINFULLY slow. For the second time now we’ve waited in line for 25-30 min, to make minimal progress. It was getting close to closing time so I went in and ordered, only to see the employees laughing and joking and moving at a snail’s pace. Not one person looked over 17 to provide any type of oversight.

Very delicious. I usually get a concrete (basically a shake) and it’s always delicious. Expect there to be a long wait when it’s hot. They get crowded and don’t always handle a crowd very well, but if you have the time and are in the mood, it’s very good. I would definitely recommend it to people.

Delicious! I visit any time I'm in SLC. I love a DQ blizzard and a Neilsen's concrete is the premium version of it. The custard is creamy and balances perfectly with chunky toppings. Go eat it!

Expect a wait when the place is busy. But the frozen custard is worth it. It was about 14 degrees and they were hopping (we waited 20 minutes in the drive through), so you know the product is excellent.

A classic drive-thru style, custard shop that sells wonderful custard (ice cream). The base flavors, vanilla and chocolate, are simple and don't offer too many variations, but the mix-ins are generous and interesting (albeit localized to the top of a "concrete." They only offer custard and variations on it, so don't expect to be eating any burgers or fries, but you wouldn't have room for them anyway.

We are excited to have a Nielsen's Frozen Custard in our neighborhood. The food is ok, nothing to write home about, but the frozen custard is outstanding. The restaurant is very noisy, very loud, I don't know how the employees keep their hearing without protection. Eat it outside!

When I ordered at the drive up window the teenager taking my order was blasting his music so I had to repeat the order 3 times and then he treated me as if I was the stupid one. Authentic frozen custard is way better than any ice cream, fro yo, dippin dots, or whatever. It's also kinda rare, but Nielsen's has it. They've been doing it right in this store since the early 80s when they used a machine the owner bought that made frozen custard at Coney Island, NY back in the 1940s or 50s. No idea if that original machine is still in use, but Nielsen's is the real deal.

Definitely the best custard in Salt Lake City. I am from wisconsin however and sadly it dosent really compare. Go to Kopps if you are ever in Milwaukee but this will no doubt hold you over until then. The employees are very young but I had no problem. Will return for sure.

The sun was setting on a too warm spring afternoon when I found myself at Nielsen's. The poor guy behind the counter seemed relieved when I asked for a vanilla, since there were large signed extolling their lack of chocolate. I can only imagine the supreme grace of these high schoolers as they faced the onslaught of choco-lovers craving their fix. A dollop of caramel and spiced apple later and I had apple pie a la mode in a cup. 10/10 would slop it down my face and shirt like my inner 3 year old child demands I do.

Even though this location does not have indoor seating, the burgers and subs of other locations, or even a third as much parking as its busy neighboring bars and restaurants require, it is still amazingly popular because of its excellent product combined with the joy of hanging out with others who are cool enough to appreciate a restaurant that apparently puts its income into quality food and cleanliness, completely disregarding typical commercial slickness.
