If you're a Southsider you probably don't need to be told about this place. But for evertyone else, you should check it out! Yes, it looks like a whole in the wall. Yes, you might even think they are closed based on the exterior, but I assure you the custard is great. Service is quick and portions are huge! Enjoy a frozen treat.

A friend told us about this place for getting frozen custard and I'm so glad she did. It was AMAZING! The staff were quick and friendly! They had a great selection whether you want it in a cup, as a sundae, and many choices for milkshakes! I ordered peach and cookies 'n cream in a cup, got so much more than I expected! Tasted so good! I highly recommend stopping here!

Very friendly service and got my frozen custard fairly quickly. Drive-thru line was pretty long but it was well worth the wait. Got the peanut butter malt shake, premium chocolate twister, and premium strawberry scoops. All of it were amazing! Can't believe it took me this long to check out the place. I highly recommend it!

Definitely a place to go if you like frozen custard. Been in Des Moines for a very long time It is a little known local favorite They have all kinds of frozen custards and toppings. You can mix and put them into. This place is always packed so make sure you get in for an early treat right before or after lunch cuz dinner time is nuts but it's worth it

Update Mar 22: we've been coming here a year and a half and only once have I had a flavor I didn't like. Consistently good and inexpensive. It's our favorite place in town. The custard here is always amazing, the portion sizes are huge, and they are priced fairly. Yes, the building needs some TLC, but the service is always great and the food tops. We come back frequently. It's the closest thing to New York custard and our small town ice cream stands that I've found since leaving Buffalo.

The ice cream here is always so good, no matter whenever I come during any time of the year! The flavors are made fresh for the day and the scoops are generous. It’s a really good ice cream place and I don’t think there’s anything else to top it. There isn’t a lot of people at the place during some days so the wait isn’t long. It may look a bit stranded outside, all that matters is the ice cream. : D

This place has the ambience of an old time Dairy Queen, walk up order window and all. But, they serve frozen custard only, as many flavors as you can imagine. The prices seem a little high at first, but wait until you see the size of the scoops. They're huge! That and the variety of flavors more than justifies the cost. And remember, it's not ice cream; it's custard. Once you've been there, you'll have no problem finding your way back!

Try the Lemon, it's super good! Kiddo loved the German chocolate sundae and my puppy loved the pup cup. This is a staple of the Southside. We drove there, ordered, and got home within 30 min. We live about 3 miles away. Quicker than DQ, just saying. 😅

Stopped on the way home from pitching practice with my daughter and her friend. They were asked to choose between DQ, Wendy's Frosties, and Wendy's ice cream shop in Norwalk. Normally Wendy's in Norwalk is the no-brainer but someone remembered the Classic Frozen Custard on SE 14th. A great choice! I'd forgotten how much fun it was to sit and enjoy an oversized serving of coconut and espresso with the craziness of evening traffic whizzing by. The custard was delicious, the service quick and delightful, and reasonably priced for the four of us. I was pleased to see that a group of 15 or so young families had selected the place for a meet and greet birthday party for one of the kids. I love to see our old haunts becoming new memories for young families. It was a total error on my part to not include Classic Frozen Custard as a choice on our list and one i won't make again. Definitely stopping there again. One note.. this is across the street from the Uhaul that I reviewed last fall... might be worth the read if you can find it.

Lemon is my favorite flavor. The custard is delicious and very creamy, the portions are huge so you'll get your money's worth for sure. The staff are always friendly. The only thing I can complain about is the drive through speaker is very old and hard to communicate with, but they've never messed up our order so props to them.

I sneak here often for the hot fudge sundae or FudgeAnna's. They are the best I've ever eaten. Slightly more expensive than other ice cream places but it's worth it for the taste. And it's not ice cream it's custard. Custard is richer and thicker. Reminds me of homemade ice cream as a kid. This place definitely beats out Culver's custard, too. Try it. You'll be amazed.

Really love this place but was disappointed this last Saturday. We live 25 miles away and stopped in to get a quart of lemon to enjoy at home. Put the container in the freezer still in the bag and when we pulled it out to eat on Monday night, it was to our disappointment that instead of lemon custard we were given carmel cashew. Yuck, do not like this kind at all. No choice but to throw it away. Lesson learned that we need to double check flavor before we leave.

The ice cream was good. They do have walk-up ordering. But the time I went which was in the evening it was only drive-thru. The ice cream is richer than some national brands. I'd recommend this.

First time visiting and will probably be the last..like others have stated it reeks of cigarette smoke, untrained and unprofessional workers, and lack of hygiene protocols. The custard was good but would not describe it as great - I had birthday cake so maybe other flavors are better. But because of the i cleanliness and unprofessionalism, I will not be returning.

Was told I should have asked for a lid ahead of time so that they could give me less custard to accommodate a lid which does not make sense to me.

I love Classic Frozen Custard. They have many different flavors of custard and toppings. Prices are a little high but it also takes less custard to fill you up so you don't need to buy as big of sizes as you would a soft serve ice cream place.

I love this place so much. It's been around forever. It is a walk up or drive thru only but they have plenty of picnic tables under a covered patio. The only other custard place around locally is Culver's. This place is better then that by far. The coconut custard with the almond fudge together is to die for! My son loves the cookies and cream and the yellow cake batter together. The turtle sundae is the best of any place I've ever been. If you haven't been here, you are missing out!

They have a right to be proud of their product. When it's on, it's probably the best in town. When it's not, it's terrible. I've had it both ways. Beware the caramel cashew when they don't get it stirred properly, unless you want the saltiest salted caramel you've ever had: not their finest effort. When the owners are away, you'll get decent servings. If the owners are working, you'll get two smallish scoops in the bottom of a cup for four dollars. And that's what I call being really proud of your product. We used to drive to the SE 14th shop from the Fairgrounds regularly for our custard fix until the nasty drive-up service and poor value for our money drove us away. Ahhh, well – all good things come to an end sometime, and there are lots of places in town to get cool treats.

I like the custard. The staff very dirty. This girl had very long nails and kept sucking the custard out of them. I saw it more then 3 times. Never washed her hands. Only reason I ate my frozen custard was this young boy made mine. I saw him wash his hands and he was very poilte.

The other week my friend, myself and my husband all went to get some because we had never tried it before. It is AMAZING! I got a triple scoop of cinnabun, cookies and cream and new york cheesecake and I was tickled pink. My friend got a cherry shake and my husband got a strawberry pineapple shake. All wonderful!

It was an awesome visit. I live far northside of town, but will make a special trip to get a frozen yogurt pumpkin cone. DELICIOUS!! Junior size is a big helping and under $3. Handy drive thru and very pleasant smiling help. I wait all year for this flavor, but if I'm in this area, I like to stop for other unique flavors. Haven't picked a bad one yet. Comes in cones, cups, pints, quarts... you name it. Always puts a smile on my face and a thrill for my stomach!! You won't be sorry.

Great custard, but it took an HOUR AND A HALF to get to the front of the line! Even with a long line, that's unacceptable. EDIT: Went there again and the wait time was better. The day I went there before posting this review the first time, they only had two people in the kitchen to staff both the standing line and the drive thru. But the wait was still ridiculously long both times.

You have to go to Classic Frozen Custard. I know you've had custard elsewhere, probably Culver's. This is different. It's like comparing Ben and Jerry's to a store brand ice cream, only you'll learn that this is so much better than B&J's. Better hurry, because they do close for winter.

Always a favorite of mine and their hours are great if you have that late night craving. Everyone I've told about this little Southside gem has fallen in love with it. I get their straw-anna: strawberries, bananas, strawberry syrup and custard. So good! Everything else there has been equally amazing. If you're a fan of marshmallows, try their marshmallow malt!

Des Moines' iconic South side custard mainstay is a true jewel of the city. Their rotating flavors feature such delicacies as caramel cashew, lemon, and mango. My personal favorite? Butterscotch.
