My family had an amazing time at this location. The customer service was incredible. The ice cream was very good as well. The only thing to beware of is that the cookie n cream has a lot of cookies. It's not your ordinary serving. However, I would highly recommend this location. Go check it out!

Nice ice cream shop with a variety of flavors. The only 3 flavors they consistently have is vanilla, chocolate and cookies and creme, the rest of the flavors are seasonal and always changing. The staff are very friendly and prices are reasonable at $3.75 for one scoop in a cup.

Haven't been in an ice cream shop for around two years (you know why) so the aroma on entering took me back a step! Got two scoops, one goat milk strawberry, and one vanilla bean. Very good.

I will say the staff was great! Icecream is pretty much my top favorite food group sooo I feel like I am in my lane here. I got the half flight which is three small scoops. I chose coffee and cookies, oatmeal crème pie, and peanut butter cup. The peanut butter cups were huge pieces that were hard to enjoy. I would have preferred that they were cut or smashed into smaller pieces so the entire experience had the cups in each bite. It was more like vanilla Icecream with massive Squares of Pb cups thrown in. The cookie and coffee was ok. I’m not sure what kind of cookies were mixed in but they had a sticky/caramel type of texture. The oatmeal cream pie was probably my favorite but I feel like it was missing something. My husband got the big scoop sundae and was disappointed that the brownie was “ hard as a rock.” He thought that it was going to break his spoon every time he took a bite. I think it would be helpful to warm the brownie first. Also the big scoop sundae is about $15 bucks I think. 15 dollars should get ya a fresh brownie! There were some pre made icecream sandwiches that looked great!

Oh my word. The banana split is heavenly. Every bite is a dream. They brulee the banana!!! My husband got a single scoop on a homemade brownie with coffee whipped cream, chocolate syrup, butterscotch syrup, an amazing candy-thing on it, and a cherry. A bit expensive, but great for a splurge!

Return visit - current set of flavors are fantastic! I did the 3x half scoop option to try different flavors. They also have kids sizes, which is smart! The blackberry-lemon was amazing! I would continue to recommend Big Spoon, my favorite ice cream shop around.

This place is like a hidden treasure! So original, truly one of a kind. I guarantee you that you will not find any other place with a menu like this and the flavors of ice cream are of their own recipe. Toppings for the ice cream, also their own recipe. It's all truly elegant but so DELICIOUS!!!! I love it! It's a little pricey but it's totally worth it!

Enjoyed my trip here and will be returning. I got a pint of the brown butter pecan. It was such a unique flavor. Both me and my partner love butter pecan ice cream. One of the few things we have in common. But opposites attract. He didn’t quite enjoy it. He said it tasted like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. However that was my favorite cereal growing up so I got the whole pint to myself. 😂

We love going to big spoon! They are so inclusive because they offer dairy free and gluten free options. They have such a wide array of flavors (many of which have texture to them, which I LOVE), and they get so creative with them. Also, they decorate their shops so well and seem to really care about their employees! I go here every time I get the chance, and there is no reason not to love their ice cream!

My favorite ice cream place ever. I don't even want ice cream from grocery stores or anywhere else anymore. If you wonder why it may be $10/pint, once you taste it, it is absolutely worth ever penny. Fresh, delicious, great customer service, and inventive flavors that are so unique. It's worth the 1 hour drive from my home to Birmingham just for this ice cream!

I didn't know that this little hidden gem (Big Spoon Creamy) even existed. Great little ice cream shop in Avondale. You got to google it to find it.😏 It's sitting back in the cut right off 6th Avenue. They have a lot of "very different" kinds of favors. It's not your average vanilla and chocolate kind of ice cream shop. They have special flavors like Goat Cheese Fig🥴🥴, peach buttermilk 😝 and Vairhona Dark Chocolate❤!! I test tasted a couple of favors, but ended up going with Lemon Passion Fruit Chiffon. In fact, I've been there twice and both times I got the same favor. I guess I'll switch up the next time, as I am a true lover of the lemon favor!😏😏😏 The waffle cone is made of vanilla. It taste soooo good!👍👐👐 The prices are reasonable, not too high. If you haven't tried them, do so. You won't be disappointed! 👍😁💯❤ Besides, it's HOT🔥🔥🔥 outside, that's an good enough reason to have ice cream!! 🍨🍧🍦

okay, the ice cream here is just amazing but i had to review because my friends and i live in tuscaloosa and are never in town, and decided to stop by right before closing… we felt so bad but it was literally the best service i have ever received anywhere. maddie is by far the kindest most customer oriented person i have met in the service industry. i can’t say i would be that nice at 9:55pm so she absolutely deserves all the praise!

O-M-G! This place is where is at! We were passing by and stop here for some ice cream and thank God we did! The place is super nice and cozy. The outdoor area is great too! But we did not come here for that, how about the ice cream? AMAZING. we tried two, coffee and cookies & cream with a vanilla waffle cone. Can't wait to try more since there were both great. If you are around, please do yourself a favor and stop here! See the pictures for more detail.

We had to stop in here while driving through Alabama, only because I saw the creme brulee banana split. It was worth the stop. Although I had a helping of apple pies 30 minutes earlier, I had to make room for the bana split. Freshly made vanilla bean ice cream that you could tell it was made from scratch with no additives. The Fresh Mint Ice Cream is also a winner. They used actual mint as if they pureed it in the ice cream itself. The ice cream is light and refreshing. I'm so glad we got a chance to stop in here.

Being lactose intolerant with a food sensitivity to dairy, I rarely eat ice cream. Big Spoon Creamery was the best and no regrets afterwards! We loved this place more Jeni’s so if you’re debating which one to go to then come to Big Spoon Creamery! There is no indoor seating area BUT! The outdoor seating area right outside is worth sitting and eating your ice cream. The GPS lead me nearby with a street over from the building. I would warn anyone ahead of time and not familiar with the area to look at the map first before getting into the car and following the GPS.

This is the best ice cream you’re going to get within a 500 radius, if not more. The owners have worked in the best restaurants in town, and now have their own place to experiment and create truly great ice cream! Every flavor (which changes every month—except for chocolate and vanilla) uses the best ingredients available. I’ve even been in the kitchen briefly, and seen how they infuse flavors into the cream with smoke! My personal favorite ice cream on this planet is Big Spoon’s coffee ice cream and coffee almond toffee ice cream. It’s perfect, but just know it may not be available since the flavors change!

What a great little ice-cream shop in an arts-centric building. Their flavors are quite creative while being rich and flavorful. I had the lemon mint sorbet and it was perfect — light, bright, and refreshing. It’s a little space, so plan on eating outside. But they have a nice space outside with some seating.

Never a bad experience here. The staff are unbelievably, consistently friendly, and the ice cream is always fantastic. Tried my very first hand at the Big Spoon sundae (photo evidence to follow) after an initial Little Spoon ask and then idea-swap. Verdict: male egos are sometimes a terrible thing - didn't get anywhere *near* finishing that thing; and, despite my not having what it took to bring down the Big Spoon, the struggle was absolutely delicious from start to inglorious finish, and totally worth it. Absolutely love this shop - looking forward to a lot more visits soon and especially during the warmer days ahead! 👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼👌🏼🍦

We were immediately greeted upon entering by a cheerful young lady. This ice cream spot was featured on a best ice cream in your state article I came across so I made it a point to visit. We were allowed to sample a few flavors and when I tasted three that I had to have she recommended the flight. My favorite was the goat cheese fig and hubby’s favorite was the magic city and the beach bonfire. One thing I will say is that with the smaller size scoops you can miss out on some of the goodies mixed in. My sample spoon had some of the potato chip and cookie dough but our scoop was missing those. Either way if you can’t decide what you want try a flight! You won’t be disappointed :)

We're from out of town and wanted to try the banana split we read about in the reviews. I guess we are banana split "purist" and didn't realize it until we had this "style" of banana split. It has a unique flavor but nothing like a true banana split. The ice cream was vanilla and to me just "okay" vanilla. Certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone that loves classic banana split.

Super cute over cream shop! When I went on a Saturday, there was a market happening, and people were selling vintage items. It was amazing!! The shop is cute, and they have a lot of different flavors. The waffle cones are delicious!! I tried the London fog ice cream and the dark chocolate, which were both incredible! My boyfriend had the mint chocolate chip and loved it!

First, the customer service here is fantastic. They are always so incredibly friendly. You are able to try any of their flavors before making a decision. Second, you can go around the corner in the building to watch how they make their delicious ice cream and sammies. They have a cute outdoor area that kids can play or you can just hang out. The perfect spot for a date night. We stood in a seemingly long line but it moved quickly and Im grateful we weren’t discouraged by all the people. When I came to Birmingham, this was the first ice cream place I went to, and it has continued to be my favorite. I highly recommend the Little Spoon sundae - it’s made with the most decadent ingredients (like Octane coffee whipped cream). My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Big Spoon is awesome. Hands down the best dessert place in Birmingham. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream is by far the best flavor, so it's a must on a first visit. The Flight is a great option to try a bunch of flavors and share with your friends, or eat it all yourself. The vanilla bean is amazing, and so is the honeysuckle blackberry. The goat cheese strawberry is also surprisingly good! Anyways, I'm about to pass out in a sugar coma, but check this place out!

Crazy, ever-changing varieties of ice cream. I tried the brambleberry, the cookies and cream, and the chocolate. They cones were delicious and sweet, and the ice cream was creamy and flavorful. You can get a sample of whatever flavor you’d like. The staff are super friendly and helpful, and keep the line moving without rushing anyone. There is plenty of seating outside, as well as cornhole for anyone that wants to stick around and hangout after they finish their dessert.

Big Spoon is a blessing and a curse, in a wonderful way; once you have their ice cream, no other will measure up. The way the flavors of their ice creams are so well integrated into the textures is sheer perfection and how they manage to keep coming up with new flavors seasonally is baffling. I am a bit partial, having a severe sweet tooth, but their ice cream and desserts are the best Birmingham has to offer, if you want to enjoy one small scoop or go for The Big Spoon (sundae).

Big Spoon Creamery is so good! My wife and I have visited both locations on Birmingham! We don't buy ice cream often, but we do when we travel to Birmingham. Our favorite flavor combination is "Magic City." It is soooo satisfying and delicious! Sorry, I don't have picture of it.

This place is absolutely phenomenal. The two employees that were working that day, (only saw two. there may have been other employees working I just didn't see them haha) May 4th of this year, were fantastic! Greeted us as soon as we walked in, were extremely helpful with whatever questions we asked them, and my triple scoop of the Valhrona Dark Chocolate was absolutely amazing. I will absolutely be visiting again soon to try their other flavors but maybe not get as much as I did previous lol. Regardless though I highly recommend trying them out. You will absolutely NOT be disappointed! And try that dark chocolate. MAN that was some good stuff!

I don’t typically write reviews unless something is exceptionally BAD, or exceptionally GOOD. I went here on a whim from 3h away and I only have one thing to say… This ice cream is the best ice cream I’ve ever had…IN MY LIFE. Period. End of story. Dramatic, I know, but it truly was amazing the flavor that they delivered in such a simple, no nonsense kind of way. All the ladies there were very nice and very helpful. To add, this place definitely checked all the boxes for me: simple, “hole in the wall”, mom and pop, clean and friendly place. I’d most DEFINITELY travel for this again.

I had gotten a banana split to end my dining experience for the night. They had ran out of sugar to Brule the banana. I don't mind at all and can only dream of how much better it would taste with a Brule banana. The fruit chunks tasted so good on the homemade tasting vanilla ice cream. The dining area, though not covered, was very Instagram worthy. Service was amazing and quick even with the child ball team that came in after me. Next time I'm in Birmingham for a special occasion, I am getting Big Spoon Creamery!

Very modern interior. The young ladies who served us were really friendly. One of them was new, so the other one was training her. I visited because it was next door to Sons Doughnuts. There were two vegan options. I don't remember the name of the flavor I had, but it tasted like strawberries, and had fudge with something else that gave it a crunch. It was delicious! Had the consistency of a creamy ice cream.

On our wedding day, the cake looked perfect and tasted great. They delivered on time and allowed us to rent a cake stand as well.

A hidden gem in the Magic City. The ice cream is absolutely incredible, and the staff are always super friendly. The banana splits and watermelon sorbet are absolutely addictive. Definitely worth a visit if you need a sweet treat after a long day or a great dessert after a nice dinner.

All ingredients in the ice cream as well as the ice cream itself is made in house. It is delightfully smooth and the flavours are well thought out. Big Spoon is EXCEPTIONAL when everything falls into place. I love the seasonally changing menu. When you get a fresh, well-formed waffle cone and the right ice cream flavor, the experience cannot be beat. Unfortunately, that’s only about 70% of the time I go. I was just so impressed with Big Spoon when it first opened for about a year or so, but more recently I have had inconsistent waffle cone freshness, or the ice cream drips out the bottom like any other cone. If I order an ice cream flavor with bits (fruits, brownie, cake, etc), I never get quite as many yummy bites with bits as I hope. It’s still great ice cream though.

First time visiting today. It wont be my last. I had the buttermilk corn cookie ice creamofmybob......I don't know how to explain it. I'm a country boy raised on a farm grew up with cornbread. So anything that reminds me of home is a plus. It is a treat really nice flavor. It really did taste like my kin folks ice cream. This is my 3 3rd time 1in Homewood and 2x @ The Avondale location. I tried the key lime and it was worth every penny I spent on it. And I got a pint of the Blueberry Cobbler flavor and it’s was Great !!! They were making the waffle cones fresh right were the customers can view. They have Great customers service and clean.. By far my number 1 favorite ice cream on Earth. The fresh mint chip blew my mind. I love that it's locally sourced and seasonal. Also, the flavors are both familiar and surprisingly creative. They nail the classics and take them beyond what you'd expect. Then they can turn around and make a vegan ice cream that the most hardcore dairy purist would love.

This place's success is certainly built on it's reputation and not it's out of the way location. We were here on a Wednesday night at 8:40pm (for my birthday) and there was a line! My husband tried to be disenchanted but he failed, especially after seeing the menu and then trying the very creative flavors. The staff was engaging and super friendly which I really didn't expect since another crowd of 20+ showed up after we did. Owners please know this and appreciate these folks because they make your business. We tried the salted chocolate (I think was what it was called) and hubs had Snack Mix. They were over the top for deliciousness! So very creamy. Probably the best ice cream I've ever had. Can't wait to go back!

I had ordered chiffon strawberry ice cream cake. She was nice to make the cake ready for pick up on Sunday at 10:00 AM. They open at 12:00. My guests loved it. The cake was moist and spongy. Strawberry ice cream was very light and creamy and not too sweet. I also bought fresh mint ice cream too, another winner. This was my 3rd time that I have ordered ice cream cake and definitely won’t be the last time. Great taste with right amount of sweetness!

Great ice cream and great customer service. My great grandmother really wanted a certain flavor that they did not have on display. It's a seasonal item for them that they had not released yet. The employees were kind enough to go to the back and get some for her that they had made that morning. Simple and decadent. You'll know you're in the right place when the first waft of fresh baked waffle cones hits you. I enjoy the simple vanilla bean in a waffle cone here. They have other great items, but don't get too attached as the menu does change a little here. Vanilla is always a staple. There is no better in Birmingham than Big Spoon and the owners are just as sweet as the products they make. Their origin story is inspiring and makes them perfect candidates for #birminghamdreamers ! I love that they follow the seasons and highlight each one with unique and interesting flavors. My favorites from the past have been too numerous to count but my current go-to is the Goat Cheese & Fig. PS. I would love to see them highlight some honey in a recipe like "Hot as Honey" from Ample Hills in NY or "Honey Almond" from Leopolds in Savannah.

Artisan ice cream at it's best. I was a fan of the food truck but the brick and mortar location is such a fantastic place to get a great scoop of locally sourced and made ice cream. I love the ice cream sandwiches but now they boast malts, shakes, sundaes and fizzies with an assortment of topping. So I have been slacking in my reviews recently but felt compelled to acknowledge the staff at Big Spoon in Avondale. It was 10:25 almost 30 minutes after they had closed when my wife and I pull up for a tasty treat. Realizing almost immediately when I stepped foot out of the car that they were closed, the signage and hours posted on the door reconfirming my suspicion, when all of a sudden the two women working inside unlock the door and ask us if we needed help. They mentioned that the Sammys are still available and they had not closed down the register yet. My wife sitting disappointed in the front seat was jarred by my knocking on the back window and we scored ourselves some delicious ice cream sammys! In the day and age of “we’re closed” and “come back when we’re" open style customer service, these women were gracious and exemplified the highest levels of customer service. Came in to a very long line (uncharacteristically long) and as always, there is the sign that says “just need pints or sammies? skip the line”. we were there to order 3 sammies and 2 pints as we were taking the treats to a gathering. The attendant behind the counter informed us that she would have to make one of the pints as they did not have it pre-made and would have to bring it to us, which is totally fine. We paid and took a seat inside the room. She then proceeded to serve the entirety of the line that was there, including 6 parties who came in after us. A member of my party actually got into the line to re-order because the wait did not line up with the expectation we were given. We finally asked how much longer and we’re told “i’m so sorry, i forgot!” I recognize that the store was very busy, but if you post signage you do not follow it doesn’t serve the experience very well. **UPDATE** After writing and posting the review, while waiting, the associate did fill our order – she included an extra pint and an extra Sammie because of our wait and her mistake. Thanks for owning a mistake, and going a step above to make it right. as always, everything was delicious.
