Best Custard I have ever tasted! This shop is so adorable! They not only sell custard, but they also sell donuts and homemade cookies, among a whole lot of other goodies!

Good ice cream! They only have the standard ice cream flavors but lots of topping selections and great sundaes and milkshakes! You’re able to get donuts inside here too from Just Fine Donuts. There are a few benches outside to sit on, however, Del Rey is a cute neighborhood to walk around in with some ice cream.

This review is strictly for the baked goods—which are amazing!! They dish out some pretty good Vegan donuts (you wouldn’t be able to tell they were vegan, trust me). The non-vegan donuts are great too, but the best item they sell is their Apple Fritters (insert drool face). These sell out pretty quickly over the weekend so get there early if you want one or three! They get pretty busy during the weekend and weeknights as most people I think come for their ice cream which I hear is pretty good. And for the furry customers, they even make ice cream cups for pups. If you’re in the Del Ray area, I highly suggest you swing by the DG and treat yourself!

As a Midwest transplant, I miss Culver’s as much as the next midwesterner. This place fills the custard shaped hole in my heart. Delicious custard, a flavor of the day that gives me the glee of waiting for the Culver’s flavor of the day, and amazing sundaes! I even love the Sprecher’s root beer that reminds me of home ♡ Even heard some women in line reminiscing about the fairy wands they used to get here when they were little. truly a gem of Del Ray!!

It’s just delicious. I’ve stuck to the frozen custard and it’s really exceptional. Creamy deliciousness that is obviously made with love (& high quantity ingredients) it’s the middle of winter and I’m still craving this stuff enough to go out and pick up a weekly supply. Totally worth it every time

The custard was mediocre and really confused that you can only get sprinkles (and other toppings) in a cup…what type of rule is that?!? Cookies were also meh. Overall, really disappointed for all the hype it gets. Not worth a second visit.

I usually only visit this place once a year due to the Art On The Avenue festival but when I do, it's always a treat. (See what I did there?) The custard ice creams are so smooth, they truly feel like silk on the tongue. I always order the large chocolate custard with the waffle cone. They also sell cookies, gourmet marshmallows, and premium sodas. The prices are reasonable and they have a jukebox so that you can play tunes while enjoying your ice cream.

-Del Ray must do -fav flavor is peppermint stick -puppy loves the puppy pops The famous Del Ray frozen custard--what else can you say...there’s a reason the line often stretches to the back of the store (or outside down the block for 2021). My family always checks the flavor of the day for our favorites. My personal favorite is peppermint stick, but there are always creative flavor combinations, and of course the tried and true vanilla and chocolate custard, and always a nice selection of cool sorbet combinations like “lemon lavender”. Dog owners love that they can get something for the dog too, ours loves the pumpkin flavored puppy pop!

This was the perfect place for us to stop after a hot day walking around Old Town. Their selection of flavors features tried and true favorites and some more eclectic ideas. The custard is wonderfully creamy, and very delicious. Everyone walked away satisfied. The staff were very friendly, the prices were reasonable, and the store was clean and well maintained. The vibe is great, and fits in well in the neighborhood. I highly recommend stopping in when you're in the mood for a sweet frozen treat.

Amazing custard, which is a big compliment from a Missouri mid-westerner like me. Daily flavors (vanilla and chocolate) along with rotating specialty flavors that change every 2 days. Check out the flavor forecast before you go! There are also ice cream sandwiches, pup-sicles for your four legged pals, sorbet, and a daily vegan option. They are great. Full stop. Now with donuts!!!

I've been visiting the Dairy Godmother for almost 20 years. Their frozen custard is top notch. It is super creamy with just the right flavor. I recommend sticking with the vanilla or chocolate. I have never had a flavor of the day that made me want more. The sundaes make me want more. My favorite is the Door County, which is frozen custard topped with marshmallow sauce and sour cherries. The cherries are just tart enough to offset the sweetness of the marshmallow and custard. Tin roof sundae is also a good choice. You can never go wrong with peanuts and chocolate. As great as the custard is, don't overlook the baked goods. Parties are the butteriest oatmeal cookies you've ever tasted, with a wonderful caramel taste. You'll be happy that you got one with your custard, or 6 to go. My dog 🐶 loves the puppy pops. Then again, he will eat almost anything. But I feel good giving him these treats with just three ingredients. If there is a line here, it moves quickly, and it is well worth the wait. The staff is efficient, friendly and helpful.

Come here for the basics! They feature vanilla custard, chocolate custard and one rotating flavor. When I visited, that flavor was Butter Pecan. I sampled it and the chocolate. I really liked both. I asked if the brownie in the brownie sundae was served warm - unfortunately not. I'm really not much for a cold brownie, so I decided to pass on that. Instead, I just got one scoop of chocolate and one of butter pecan with a couple toppings - maybe M&M's and hot fudge? I can't quite remember because it wasn't anything special. I felt like the options of toppings weren't too exciting. Over all, this custard was enough to satisfy me......temporarily. I really prefer a bigger/crazier menu when it's time to have an ice cream party.

Dairy Godmother is hands down some of the best frozen custard I've had. I frequently go out of my way to have dessert here. Highly recommended! Word of caution, there is always a line!

The staff was lukewarm to my appearance in the shop. I'm not sure if it was due to the volume of patrons entering and exiting the shop. I had planned on ordering the banana split, but no butter pecan ice cream and no syrup . I ordered the vanilla with pecans and chocolate. I forgot it's original name. The shop is quaint in a pleasant environment. I was hoping for a more enjoyable experience.

Just moved to the neighborhood and walked over for some donuts. Not only were the donuts out of the world but they were so patient and kind. Took the time to explain the differences of the donuts to my son, gave us recommendations around the neighborhood and truly seemed to care about our family and our experience. Even after the recent changes the custard remains delicious! I like the sundaes and milkshakes. My son loves the pops. (He does wish there was always some sort of chocolate flavor in the case -- too many fruit choices some days.) The cobbler is always amazing. Sometimes the service could be better (aka SMILE!) but overall many good experiences here.

Unique and tasty treats, only point of criticism is just that currently your hours are just really inconducive to Summertime in general. I can’t believe you guys won’t stretch it to even 9:30pm. One might finish dining around 9:00 or 9:30pm (or even 10pm) on a Friday/Saturday night only to find the doors closed 5 minutes too soon.

Flavor of the day custard (muddy sneakers) tasted great and was silky smooth. Also had a lemon ginger sandwich bar that was hard to taste the lemon custard which also a bit grainy/icy on the edges. Overall, I recommend the fresh custard options.

What a dream! What a treat! To find Midwest-style custard, done right, on the East Coast! Everything here is delicious. They have a "Treat of the Day," which is usually a homemade dessert like peach cobbler, with custard on top. I highly recommend trying that.

This place is a wonderful Del Ray institution that you have to visit if you're in Alexandria. The frozen custard is incredibly good and comes in chocolate, vanilla, or the flavor of the day. They also have really yummy fruit cobbler in season, and a nice selection of cookies.

I was in the area and decided to stop by for a treat around 8:30pm. With the attitude the girl behind the register gave me, you'd think I had come in at 8:59! You're still open for 30 more minutes, relax! I had never been before, so I wanted to look over the menu. Instead of saying "take your time" she stared me down the whole time and made me feel rushed, so I just went with the plain chocolate custard. Always a safe bet, right? I wasn't impressed. Maybe my expectations were too high, as I've only seen great reviews of this place, but I wish I'd spent that $4 elsewhere. I love ice cream/custard/froyo, and generally when I eat it, I'm thinking "wow, this is delicious...I hope it never ends!" The custard here didn't leave me feeling anything...it was rather bland. The feeling was more so like, "let me just hurry up and eat this and get it over with."

So glad they decided to stay open. This is our favorite ice cream place around. They only have 3 flavors of custard, vanilla, chocolate, and a rotating flavor of the day. They also have sorbet, but the custard is the way to go. So creamy. There can be long lines on the weekends.

Popular ice cream continues to be dished out here in quaint Del Ray. Having almost closed a few years ago, many relieved patrons still pile in to get their frosty treats. Another patron, former President Obama came here in 2009, adding to the local fame. Although a lack of customers will never be a problem, their ice cream sometimes is. The custard (vanilla, chocolate, and special flavor) melts incredibly fast even on cool nights. Quality suffers a bit from the lack of creaminess, exhibiting more of a milky texture. A saving grace is the homemade baked treat, ranging from apple crisps to blueberry pies. The delicious flavors are present but not where you might expect.

This custard is so good. This is a neighborhood haunt that is easily one of my best loved - sweet parts of Alexandria. If you haven't been here, don't wait...go today. My favorite is Dusty Road (your choice of custard flavor, hot fudge, topped with malt powder and whipped cream.

This place serves rich frozen custard (NOT ice cream!) and frozen sorbets. They always have chocolate and vanilla, and then add a flavor of the day for custard, and the sorbet flavors always vary. So it's always nice to go and see what is there. The sorbet flavors are fresh and natural and always creative. Raspberry is a staple, but branch out and try some of the unusual ones. You won't be disappointed.

The custard was good, not great. The specialties were meh. Custard with plain rice crispies (not a rice crispies treat, you know, the one with the melted marshmallows and sugar and deliciousness) doesn't really "Wow" me. It's surprising how popular this place is. Maybe because it's in a trendy neighborhood? I don't know, but unless I'm at my friend's house down the street, there really isn't anything special to bring me back.

Squirrel dog treats and frozen custard for the doggies as well. Home made ice cream cakes that are seasonal, had family from out of town for Thanksgiving giving do we mixed it up that year with Thanksgiving themed/flavored ice cream pies..love this place you will too!

My girlfriend and I just left here and it was wonderful. We had Sundays, the ice cream tasted homemade along with the whipped cream and the hot fudge was actually hot!!! Lol. I know that sounds odd but I find that in most places its simply luke warm. The atmosphere was family and child derived but I must include that both small sundays were a bit pricey $10.50. I am from NYC and to me that just seemed a little much given the area but everything else was great.

Tough to compete with custard giants like Pop's and the other joint on King Street in Old Town. However, Dairy Godmother makes up for all around offerings with depth of flavors. Every day (or two), they offer a brand new featured flavor, and you can see which flavors are coming up on their monthly website calendar. So if you're a freak for maple walnut (like me) you know how many days in advance you need to work out to balance out that pint you're planning to buy. Also make sure to grab a six pack of the craft brewed root beer on sale here. Nothing better than a custard root beer float!

Walking here from the Braddock Road metro is the most rewarding mile walk ever. Minus one star because their shortbread cookies aren't my favorite, and trying to keep the powdered sugar (that tops the cookies) off my clothes is 100x more difficult and annoying than trying to keep melted custard off my clothes. Don’t bother ordering the banana split. They say it has strawberries and pineapple but the strawberries aren’t fresh and the pineapple is non existent. In addition, the whip cream is canned and the while thing isn’t even attractive plus the bananas are green and there are no cherries. Come On Dairy Godmother you are failing your cool style here.
