It all started with a clogged drain line…. I called another company, they came out 4 days later to clear the drain. Luckily this was when we had some cooler temps. I was told the 15 year old unit looked great and we had plenty of time left on it. The next time we ran the unit buckets of water was coming from our back up drain, the drain pan was full of water, and we noticed water spots on our ceiling under the unit in the attic. I called the company that serviced it on a Sunday and they said they couldn’t come until Tuesday, that was not ok with me.
I contacted Guy Smith Heating and Cooling via their website on that Sunday afternoon, hoping for an appointment Monday morning. Katelyn called me within the hour to get more info. She explained that the situation was not good and she said “I think I can help you”, those were the words I needed to hear in that moment. She gathered some info, put me on a brief hold, and came back to say “my tech will be there in 25 minutes.” Amazing customer service on her part! She put me at ease even with a full blown leaking unit and a 4 year old begging for my attention during the call.
Kevin arrives, asks a few questions, explains everything and starts to blow out the drain line (you know the one that was already cleared). This time he didn’t stop until he got it cleared, he was adamant that it wasn’t cleared. He tried again and sure enough a ton of rust came blowing back up the drain pipe all over the unit.
After further inspection and showing us pictures, he noted that the unit was rusting apart. Fixing it would only delay the inevitable replacement. So we started the quote process right there at my kitchen table. He outlined all the options for replacement, explained payment options, scheduling, maintenance, etc. There wasn’t a question I had that he didn’t answer. We ended up purchasing a new unit to replace the one that the other company said was “doing fine.”
The install guys arrived on Friday morning as scheduled. They were professional, clean, personable, prompt, informative, helpful, and every other positive descriptor you could use. They even covered our floors and steps with a canvas type fabric to ensure the amount of dirt tracked through the house was minimal. They were here all day but had little impact on my ability to continue to work from home.
I HIGHLY recommend Guy Smith Heating and Cooling for ANY HVAC need you should have!

David from Guy Smith was awesome. First off not a lot of people work on gas boilers now a days so thrilled to find someone that did, nonetheless on the weekend. He took his time assessing our entire system but was quick to provide a solution. We had heat in 15-20 minutes on a very cold day. Made an appointment to assess a non working heating unit. David showed up on time, called first, and conducted his business in a professional manner. He was friendly and knowledgeable. Explained what he was doing and what components that he was looking at and testing. Then told me what was wrong and how much it would cost to repair. I would recommend that others use, and I would not hesitate to call them in the future!

My a/c system needed to be replaced. I called an air conditioner company (I won’t name) & knew I was not going to use them based on the unprofessional tech & trainee that came out. The invoice they had sent the next day via email was 4 lines long asking for a ridiculous amount of money. I was worried because the weather is getting warmer. Nice and friendly but geez, very very expensive. $350 for first pound coolant and $180 for every pound after that. $360 an hour to find leak. My neighbor charged me $175 for 6 pounds which he did state was cost. Seems like Smith could have better prices. Think they like to push new stuff which I understand but times are difficult. Previous visits were going to charge me $650 for a $20 capacitor and starter. Went on Internet and bought 2 for $35. Then they said they would charge me $250 to change it which is at max a 15 minute job. Need a new system, good as any but will shop around next time for future visit consideration.

I am very impressed with Guy Smith Heating and Cooling. My AC wasn't producing much hot air and there were some pretty cold nights in January and February. Due to my job, I was gone a lot, but when I finally called, their customer service was easy to work with and they were able to send a technician out later that day. I received an automated text with the technicians name and an alert when when he was on his way. Jon Shaffer was a professional through and through. As a hands-on guy with minimal HVAC knowledge, I had tons of questions. He didn't mind me tagging along up in the crawl space and asking him everything I was curious about. He walked me through everything he was checking out. After inspecting both the air handler and the heat pump, we discovered a refrigerant leak and a worn out heating element. Jon took all the time I needed to talk through everything. From how long I plan to live at this house, the expansion plans with an extra room, to family needs and lifestyle. And we discussed all the options, from leak detection, refrigerant filling and equipment repair costs in relation to my foreseen time in this house and taking into consideration the future sale of the property and how old the system would be at the time; as well as total system replacement. We crawled around the other crawl space access and talked out relocating the air handler to get it out of the cramped location it was currently in. We walked around the house discussing the ideal relocation of the heat pump for my house expansion plans. I think we walked through every possible option in preceding forward. All in all, he was here for over 3 hours when the inspection only took him 1/2 hour. The rest was all answering my questions. I ended up deciding to replace the system and am happy with the decisions we settled on.
Thomas Britton and his crew showed up two days later to install the new system. They were polite and went right to work. They laid drop clothes to protect my hardwood floors. They successfully removed the old system and installed the new system in one day and I was enjoying my warm house by nightfall. The installation looks very clean and neat.
Nobody is happy about dropping a lot of money for an unplanned home repair. But having a good experience with a company's customer service and the field technicians makes a world of difference. I am glad I chose Guy Smith Heating and Cooling and will definitely call them in the future when I begin to add the extra room.

I have been a commercial tin knocker for 12 years before joining the military. Apparently the free money from the government wasn't enough, Guy Smith also wanted to snatch money from an 82 year old wheelchair bound senior. It is questionable whether the condenser (outside) and air handler (in attic)both had to be replaced. Nothing has ever been stored in the attic. Nobody ever goes up there. And as a ductman, I know not to walk or step on duct. Seems like more air is coming out of the connections he tied into than what would enter the house. The unit also cycles almost every 9 minutes like clockwork. At least the time I have visited here. I wish I had checked the work sooner but unfortunately not able to. I could not in good conscience leave anyone, much less a wheelchair bound senior with half a55 work. Also they left all the trash in the attic, the pieces of particle ductboard they cut away, the rolls of tape cardboard (looks like white webbing strap, definitely not aluminum to seal the connections), and pieces of piping. I don't understand why they didn't put the wires in a junction box or at a minimum cover with electrical tape, but with all that old attic dust and loose insulation, perhaps they figure an electrical fire would be more efficient to heat the house. I also do not see any signs of new aluminum tape near where the unit was installed, probably why you can feel air leaking out the bottom of it. I guess spending almost $9000 doesn't warrant proper use of sealers and tapes and replacing duct they crush. It definitely didn't cover $3.99 for a roll of electrical tape. I am going to contact the city and show them the wiring and file a BBB complaint for my father. Also, no reason whatsoever for a unit swap to cost that much, maybe before shortages, but this was done summer of 21 before installers started increasing costs. I can still get unit now with higher seer rating and smart thermostat and installed under what was charged.
Edit. After contacting office, they had a tech call. They showed up next day. I asked for owner, but don't think I ever spoke to them. Based on pics and phone conversation with the tech it sounds like the problem was remedied. Also their reps seemed to agree that no excuse for condition of the job, but what would have happened if unnoticed. I have not personally seen the repair, but I do intend to check behind their repair. They have tried to fix it, only time will tell how things will adjust. The 9 minute cycling has reduced a lot. From 0 to 3 star, based on great follow up. Will reassess when I can see final product.

They were professional and showed a great deal of concern with keeping me updated on the installation process. They put down drop cloths when they arrived to keep the carpet and floor cleaned.. So far we are really pleased with the Heating/Air service we have received from Guy Smith. We had the whole system checked out, had an air scrubber installed, and signed up on a maintenance contract. There is always someone available to talk to. After a week with the air scrubber that had an ozone feature, we decided we didn't want the ozone so they removed that part at no extra cost. All the heating/air service people have been friendly and knowledgeable. We recommend their services.

Started gathering quotes; another hvac company recommended I change out my current unit. I called Guy Smith to get a quote for a new system; Blake came out the next day. He'd asked about the current functionality of the system, I told him that the heat pump was not functioning. He took measurements then looked at the heat pump and mentioned that it might still be under warranty, then proceeded to the attic to evaluate current air handler and wrap-up measurements. Subsequently, Blake provided me with an estimate on a reasonably priced replacement unit and also offered to lookup the warranty on my current system even though Guy Smith does not sell the unit in which I have. Within minutes, he confirmed that the system was still under warranty and that they could have a technician out between 4 and 6 that same day, so I confirmed. Kevin the technician showed up by 2:30 to conduct system leak assessment. He'd asked what the system was doing, told him the heat pump was not functioning, it keeps turning on and off in spurts. Kevin hooked-up the gauges to the outdoor unit, asked when the last time I received freon and how much I received; I told him 2 or 3 lbs; he said your unit does not have a leak it was over charged with freon, that's the reason why the unit turned on and off. He went into the attic to look at the air handler then proceed to conduct temperature checks to confirm no degradation existed. Bottom line up front - integrity, professionalism, and technical wherewithal exhibited by both Blake and Kevin won a repeat customer; really appreciate your honesty and customer service, saved me time and money.

Guy Smith Heating and Cooling for the WIN! During the massive heat wave of July 2022 our AC went out without warning Friday evening. I called literally 18 companies (went in order of online results) and was told the same thing over and over "we're going to charge you an arm and a leg to come out, won't promise to fix it, and we can't come out until 10 days from now".
Guy Smith answered the phone on a Saturday morning, was professional and courteous, and dispatched a technician not only the SAME DAY; but, showed up in only FIFTY SEVEN MINUTES! The problem was identified within 10 minutes of arrival, and only 10 more minutes later was the AC back operating with a new Capacitor.
In fact, they were so courteous, knowledgeable, and timely I signed up for their recurring maintenance plan on site. This was the most professional and truly effective AC company i've had the pleasure of dealing with. I will use Guy Smith for years to come! 5 out of 5 stars - truly recommend!

This was my first issue with the AC since I started using this company. Of course it happened after hours and on a Friday. So at 12:40 AM I put a call in since my AC stopped working and I discovered this when I got home from work. Within 10 minutes to my surprise Brian called me back to see what was going on. Would not in good conscience recommend this company. Although the installers did their job, the salesperson was pushy and lied to me. Said my compressor had not been properly registered by the previous installer. I looked in my files and found written confirmation that it HAD! He also told me that if I tried to take time to think about it and get other estimates, I would have to pay him the $400 for the plug he installed in my compressor that DIDN'T WORK! In addition, in researching online, I found I had overpaid for the unit! I hate being taken advantage of. They love to find females living alone so they can do that! Called Guy Smith to check out my furnace for the heating season. Brian was the service tech that came out. while he was on the way the company set me a text giving Brian’s info along with his picture. That’s a helpful touch. He was very nice, friendly and thoroughly knowledgeable. He explained what he was doing as he went along. The first thing he found was the vent pipe had not been properly installed and worked on it to make it proper and safe.
He found the gas valve was not operating properly, he replaced it and the unit worked nicely.
Brian cleaned up the work area after he finished the work.
I plan to use Guy Smith for the semi annual inspections as well as any other HVAC issues.

Great company. Always prompt and honest. They installed out heat pump fee years back and that's still going strong without any issues. Not only that but when they gave us an initial estimate they underbid themselves since our house needed more work done that it was obvious at first. They still honoured the estimate.
When our heat stopped working, I called them and the technicians arrived ahead of schedule. Then they quickly discovered that the issue wasn't with the heat pump but with the electrical box. They referred me to an electrician and didn't charge me for coming out!

I had a wonderful experience with Guy Smith. I had trouble all summer with my AC when it got very hot so I wasn't surprised when our heater stopped working right when it got cold last week. I called Guy Smith instead of going through my home warranty like I did all summer. Best decision ever. They sent out on of their tech's, Brian, who came the same day I called. He found a couple minor things and the heat started coming out hotter again but my air flow was still terrible like it has been since the summer. I was told by several other AC/Heat companies that my duct work just had issues and the intake was too small. Instead of leaving after it started coming out hotter Brian went back into my attic to review the duct work and see why I didn't have a stronger airflow. He found out that there was a media filter installed up there that was basically hidden away. Once he removed it and told the unit not to use it our air flow was fantastic! It has kept up without an issue ever since and air flow is finally there. I will be using Guy Smith and asking for Brian from now on!

I woke up to a cold house; my air handler blower stopped working in the middle of the night. HomeAdvisor directed me to Guy Smith. They came out same day for a diagnostic. My control board stopped sending signals to my blower— my heat worked, it just wasn’t circulating. They were able to do a temporary fix and get my house feeling warm again.
They were able to get the replacement part in quick fashion and replaced it quick.
Luckily everything was still under warranty, so it didn’t cost as much as I was thinking. Both techs were professional. Office personnel I talked to over the phone were very polite.

I have had a maintenance agreement with Guy Smith since around 1991 after I purchased my home and the heating went out due to a broken weld on a heat exchanger. In that time they have replaced or repaired every major part of the system as each has worn out due to age or use as well as completed semi-annual cleanings and inspections. Their prices are fair, they remind you when service is due, they arrive at the scheduled times, do not use high pressure sales, explain what and why a repair is needed, and are courteous and quick. I've never had to suffer through a hot summer or cold winter.

We'd been having problems with a pipe carrying condensation water which for some reason was ran the length of the house. We thought Guy Smith would have to drill a new hole through the bricks out of the garage to drain the condensation. However, the technician suggested a much easier fix, installing a small pump to force the water through the pipe. He was able to get the pump and install it within a couple of hours. We had a new AC unit installed late last spring. It took 3 technicians to come out to ensure the unit was working properly, which it has all summer, thankfully. No complaints there, other then having the inconvenience of multiple trips to ensure the quality of the installation. The main reason for only providing 3 stars is not because of that, but unfortunately, the first technicians laid down the sticky plastic meant for carpets on our hardwood stairs. I appreciate the attempt to keep the area protected, but it seemed they used the wrong stuff. When the job was "completed" the first time (before the next 2 service calls), the protected plastic was lifted, which also stripped the hardwood stairs finish off, leaving a 2-tone look to the stairs. I showed the other techs who came out, who said they would take pics and show the office. I called to address the issue, and spoke with Sunny, as the owner was on vacation at the time. I was not thrilled about his lack of listening to my complaint, and said I'd have to write a negative review if the company was not willing to at least take a look at the issue to come to some type of agreement to have it fixed. He was not happy with me wanting to make a negative review, and said some other unpleasant things, and ended up hanging up on me. Before he did so, I was as patient as I could be, but he insisted this issue was not from the install. I have pictures of the stairs from before and after, and it's very obvious there is a difference, and exactly where the plastic was laid down. I attempted to call numerous times after that to speak to the owner. I left voice messages, that were never returned. I wasn't expecting an overnight fix, but I was hoping the company would at least hear me out, come see the stairs and take ownership of the issue, even going half on getting it resolved. I did not want to make a negative review, especially after the 3rd technician came out, I think his name was John, he was excellent and worked and sweat his butt off to get the unit working properly. I've hesitated for a while to make this review, as I prefer not to, and wanted to see how the unit faired during the hot summer, but this may be the only way to get their attention now. To the owner, Mr. Smith, if you read this, and are willing to come back to the house yourself to assess the damage on the hardwood stairs, I'd REALLY appreciate it, and would be happy to increase my rating. If not, unfortunately, I'd have to say it's not great business, and would not recommend you to friends/family in the future.

Since Februrary 2018, our HVAC unit has not operated properly, the first problem: blower fan needed replacing, then a condensation leak on the outside of the unit concerning the exhaust piping, then the same piping began leaking behind the front panel, the unit's variable speed feature would not operate, then the induction motor needed replacing. Norman serviced the unit, then Brian became involved, and finally Larry performed a detailed analysis resulting in a fully operational unit. These techs were polite, arrived on time and worked diligently to find the source of the unit's problems. Guy Smith also honored their stated and written warranty. For the past 2 days Brian and Larry spent most of those days examining the unit until they were satisfied the unit operated properly. In final, I extend my thanks to Norman, Brian and Larry for spending the time and expertise to bring my HVAC unit back on line and extending the unit's life-time.

Realizing I have a choice among several Heating and AC companies in the Hampton Roads area. I chose Guy Smith H&C, having never dealt with them before, and that selection was based on local reputation.
A new Goodman 2 ton/14 SEER Condenser, gas furnace, coil exchange and air handler was purchased on 9/18/2017 and installed on 9/20/2017. To start, I’m going to say three things. (1) For having a new system for exactly a week now, I have met too many Guy Smith technicians. (2) Technicians Jon (Shaffer), Phil and Gerald; superb help!! (3) Installers C. and M…..not so much.
The buying process with Jon was outstanding, he is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with!
Installers arrived as scheduled, at about 9am and departed at 8:00PM. Way too much time for a small system and installed by supposed seasoned installer and helper. Two hours before they actually left, when my wife asked for an update/possible completion timeframe the lead responded with “another couple of hours, got to rewire a few things here…” This did not instill confidence. They left after showing the completion paperwork to my wife without fully testing/demonstrating that both heating and cooling worked. Of course, as soon as they were out of sight, the system turned on and included a LOUD howling sound of air escaping/whistling out of either the air handler or existing ducting (which had never happened before). She called the company and was told to turn the system off until another tech could come back and inspect.
Phil and Gerald were next to respond. I’ll repeat, they were outstanding, extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with! The air escaping/howling turned out to be a tape leak behind the air handler at the bottom. Not a huge deal, I can understand this happening (but, should have been corrected during the installation). They also took the time to re-tape several areas around the air handler and furnace. IN ADDITION they checked gas pressure and adjusted the high side at the furnace, tested secondary float switch and checked inside and outside for any leaks. They did a full system check knowing that the city would be here to inspect the system in 2 days. What would have been an inspection hit….installing 20 amp breakers at the compressor disconnect when the compressor is rated for 15 amps. Gerald went to the big orange store for a replacement breaker, came back and installed it. Again, a pleasure working with them! I’m hoping that their findings are also feedback to the company and original installers.
What bothers me and needs to be feedback to Guy Smith Co.;
(1.) Eleven and a half (11 ½) hours to install a system in a closet, not an attic.
(2.) At completion, no demonstration. Just sign the paperwork and go
(3.) The air escaping/howling was quite evident. Should have been resolved at that time, they clearly knew/heard it.
(4.) No mention of gas pressure checks/leak checks/safety switch checks
(5.) Over-amperage breaker installed at the compressor disconnect switch. I understand the shop was out of 15amp breakers, ok, so they couldn’t stop somewhere and buy the right size…they knowingly installed the incorrect amperage breakers. I understand the risk is slim with “new” equipment. And, the fact they never mentioned anything about it or that it should be replaced before inspection. They placed my family and house/property at risk.
(6.) This installation was unprofessional in the work ethic of the installers
I’m off my soap box. I have a new system that is now fully operational. Thank you Jon, Phil and Gerald. In the future should service calls be required I will ask for you (3) by name! In my opinion, they are the best review I can give to your company at this time.
