Reviews of Select Specialty Hospital - Spectrum Health
I would give you all a 10 if I could! The one thing I would change is that the call light should go the desk and they page it out. The call system now takes a bit for people to get back to you. Understandable because they are busy. I don’t know how you guys are so nice! The attitude is unbelievable. So great!
My husband spent approx. 4 weeks at Select Specialty Hospital recovering from a very serious surgery and major complications/setbacks. Every single staff member, Nursing, PT, Physicians, you name them, are absolutely top notch. My husband was treated like family (they treat everyone that way). When it was time to be discharged, our Case Manager had everything set up so that he was safe at home and ready to take his next steps to full health. I highly recommend and we are so glad to have this type of medical care in our area.
I felt like part of the group. This place is like a family. The nurses and the staff treates me real good. They kept my spirits up. Its a diverse group of people too! Jessica my night nurse was my girl. She took such great care of my wound. She would take the time to talk to me, laugh with me, and cry if I needed it. I also loved Cat and Beth in therapy. Petri was hilarious. And Jason from dialysis was amazing. Shout out to Daryla, Bre da, Dr. Lee, and Dr. Dyke
. Is wish I could take them with me...
I was very insecure about what I was going to encounter about coming here from ICU. My first night nurse really made me feel relaxed and better about me coming here. I didn't understand what this facility was for. We were very confused. Wished someone would have discussed this level of care better. I wouldn't have been so nervous.
Honestly though, every nurse, aid, and respiratory therapist was wonderful! Gary - Speech Pathologist was excellent. Macie, my wound nurse was excellent. Physical Therapy was outstanding. They didn't push me, they knew what I could do and were great at describing the therapy to me. Everyone was great at encouraging me.
This is a transitional unit.
The staff I met are all professional and willing to go above and beyond! Bree from Respiratory was very motivating. I had the intention of only being here 3 days and the team very kindly showed me I needed more help than I thought. It was humbling. I've been independent since I was 12 and this team took the time to respect my dignity and make it a personal experience. Beth from Rehab was easy to click with. She is very friendly to work with. Krishna is so caring! Didn't matter what you needed, she was there for you. I'd say all nurses were caring but Krishna kept me positive.
There were good days. There were bad days. I had great nurses. Night I had someone give me a stuffed puppy to keep me company and it helped me with my PTSD. The staff was really good about my PTSD. I made a lot of friends, they were really attentive to my needs for the most part. My respiratory nurses were awesome. Christian (RT Therapist) and Amber (RN) were really attentive to all of my needs. I can’t comment on the food because I couldn’t eat it. They made sure I got everything I needed.
Most of the staff was caring and compassionate. The respiratory therapist were wonderful and on top of it. Shondrea would always make me smile by saying - Hello Gorgeous. I also liked Mike, Christian, and Tung were the best. Dr. Lee is wonderful! He was always looking out for me and what I needed. Gary, the Sppexh guy is a sweetheat.
My loved one had a great experience here at Select Specialty Hospital. We didn’t really know what to expect coming from the ICU, but the staff were all courteous and helped us through a very difficult time. I appreciated their responsiveness and willingness to listen to our needs. The physicians, nurses, therapy department, everyone was great!
My Mom had a brain hemorrhage and is a patient here and is going thru her recovery phase. The staff have been wonderful in their care of her. The Doctors, Nurses, Physical Therapy, Respiratory and Aides, all have been very accommodating and very eager to answer all questions. A member of my Family is always there, so we are also able to see first hand the care that is given. They specialize in weaning the patient off the Respirator, so I am hoping that we reach that point very soon and can bring Mom back home.
I was annoyed that I had to go to another hospital for care. But it was the best decision I ever made! Everybody here helped me a lot. Physically and mentally there was a lot of good support.
These young kids here get you laughing and it’s good for the soul. I did have to push them a bit to let me push myself.
If I hadn’t come here, I wouldn’t be as far as long as I am. And able to go home today. And let me say that as sick as I’ve been, this has been the most excellent care.
My Father-in-law was taken to the Select Specialty LTC with the goal of weaning him off his tracheotomy vent and begin various rehab's he needed. The facility was very successful and quick with working with him to reach this goal. Rob, the respiratory therapist was outstanding!
We did find a lack of communication and responsiveness from some of the staff at the beginning of the stay. Once we expressed this to those in charge the situation was very quickly rectified thanks to Jim Aldrich and Dr. Simmons. We were set up with regular care conferences and kept abreast of the care plan and we were able to help with the direction of care and become comfortable with the care plan.
Most of the staff were outstanding especially OT, PT, and Gary the speech therapist. We were also very happy with the HD Staff however there was some difficulty in scheduling dialysis to enable the other therapies to be able to schedule appropriately.
The nursing staff was wonderful and Brady, Sarah and nursing assistant Rachel really went over and above for us!
This facility enabled my Father-in-law to successfully take on the next steps at the next facility to continue his recovery.
What can we say! Once we received a call almost immediately after Todd was received into Select Specialty Grand Rapids care from downtown hospital late into the evening, we had confidence that this was going to be a terrific place, and good for our loved one. This showed their great concern for the patient & the family.
Once brother was admitted, and the work began to wean him off the vent & to facilitate his healing... SELECT SPECIALTY's staff, nurses, CNA's, Respiratory Therapists, OT & PT, each performed their jobs to the fullest. Their knowledge & professionalism stood out as the best in the industry.
They did outstanding jobs! They have such professional staff that all deserve a BIG HUG, and a HUGE HIGH FIVE. They know their stuff!
They even worked with our family to let 1 person visit due to Covid restrictions, and due to the nature of our loved one's issues.
I/we would consider them all friends, & can't wait to maybe visit once restrictions are lifted to show our gratitude. Love to all!
Thank you to everyone who helped with my care and rehab. From being weak as a kitten with daily dialysis too being able to go home after 3 weeks, was a blessing. I would like to thank Dr. Simmons and my RN who were instrumental in getting my feeding tubes removed. Also Heather, in physical therapy, who personally came in on her days off to facilitate my ability to go home early. Care was exceptional and I will be always thankful for all the special care givers. God Bless
This section of the Bladget Hospital is isolated from the rest of the general hospital.
There are some great staff members onboard and some very understanding caregivers.
The two doctors Dr. Dyke & Dr. Lee I’ve dealt with are both extraordinary people, they are very understanding and passionate about their jobs and eager to see their patients succeed.
We had a great experience and excellent care has been provided to us,
all of our questions have been answered .... but
it’s everyone’s homework to educate yourself on your loved ones conditions so that you are able to ask the doctors right questions to help you understand everything better.
The physical therapist are greatest always understanding and ready to help to push you with positive attitude further that you knew you are able to.
I would definitely recommend Specialty Hospital to other people and other loved ones.
My son Drew ended up at Select Specialty Hospital to rehab from complications of Aspirating Pneumonia. My son is also disabled physically and mentally. This facility was great in the care that they gave to drew and his treatment. From Respiratory, the nurse's, the aides and the specialist's. They kept us as parents informed and I never once felt uncomfortable with leaving my son in their care. If anyone you know needs to rehab for any sickness, this is the place to go. We were very happy with our experience and for Drew's experience as well.
I have been at the specialty unit for a number of times and my experiences there have been so awesome. The nurses go out there way to take care of the patients and the aides also have empathy towards who they are caring for. There respiratory care unit of people are so incredible they are saving lives. the unit as a whole all work together and couldn't of asked for a better unit to take care of my family member kudos specialty unit keep up the good work .........
I can’t say enough great things about Select Speciality. From the nurses, cnas, RTs, and case managers, everyone is wonderful. Everyone kept me in the loop. My dad was here for a month to recover after being in the icu on life support for respiratory failure. He is leaving the facility tomorrow to continue his recovery with NO vent or trach. Please consider Select for your family and friends. They treated him and I so well.
SIMPLY THE BEST
The exceptional care and compassion shown by the entire staff at Select Speciality Hospital in Grand Rapids has been outstanding and went beyond my expectations.
The individuals I met and spoke with were highly skilled and provided quality care and treatment to my husband during his stay at the facility.
The staff at Select in GR met with the family within the first week to inform us the steps they were going to take to wean my husband off the ventilator and answer any concerns we had about his care. There was a team of over ten people that were responsible for his care each day.
Jim, the CEO at Select in GR said that my husband’s full recovery was their top priority. They would not push him out of the hospital before he was ready.
My husband had been in ICU for over a month at another hospital. He was on a ventilator (life support) and a tracheostomy had been performed to enable him to breathe easier. He was unable to communicate to others and he was losing hope that he would ever recover to his former self.
My prayers were answered when I found Select Speciality in Grand Rapids on the Internet. They were ranked well above the national average for their outcomes or results and had high ratings from other patients.
It was worth the extra thousands of dollars for transportation by ambulance that I had to pay because the insurance company refused to send him to a facility outside a 30 mile radius.
My husband’s room was bright and cheery. The room was neat and clean. Since my husband is susceptible to infections it was a relief that precautions were taken make everything sterile.
His recovery has been a miracle from God. Within a few days of his arrival, my husband was off the ventilator tube and was sitting in a chair.
Imagine my surprise, when I received a phone call from my husband. A device had been put on his trach to enable him to speak. It brought tears to my eyes when I could hear the sound of his voice for the first time in months.
The respiratory therapist was very knowledgeable and explained everything so it was easy to understand. He had a great sense of humor and put us at ease.
After only about a week and a half, I was told my husband had improved so much, he was going to be moved to another floor of the hospital. He has been off the ventilator tube for several days and his trach was going to be removed.
My husband’s attitude has changed dramatically and he realizes how precious life has become I thank all the many family, friends, and complete strangers who have prayed for him and kept him in their thoughts. Don’t forget to say, “I love you” to a special person in your life.
The hospital has a chaplain on staff to meet his spiritual needs.
I would like to thank all the volunteers at Blodgett Hospital who work tirelessly to raise money to help various needs of the hospital..
My sister and I visited a cafe within the hospital that was staffed with all volunteers except the cooks. The food was delicious and reasonable priced. The proceeds that were raised went to various charities within the hospital. The volunteer we spoke with had volunteered at the restaurant for over 38 years.
My husband is now excited about his life and what the future holds for him
We aooreciate the nurses for contually updating us on my husband's progress and their constant care. The CNA's for cheerfully assisting him The entire staff were all very professional and had a smile and a kind word when caring for my husband.
Thank you to the staff for being there for my husband and giving him a new lease on life.
The staff is kind and does their duties willingly.
One thing I appreciate is that the to heart transplant team is here. They have visited me and I know they would be be available if I needed them.
They are pretty adamant about getting you off the ventilator, tracheostomy, and getting me healthier. Dr. Dyke is a nice guy who is very helpful. He's a character!
The staff is very friendly, kind, and courteous. I would recommend this facility if someone need it.
Compassionate. Caring. Dedicated. Highly Skilled. These are just a few words to describe the staff at Select Specialty Hospital. The aides, nurses, therapist and the entire team have provided our mother with a level of care that is second to none. If you or someone you know is in need of care, come to the place you can trust....Select Specialty Hospital!
I would recommend Select Specialty. They cared for my husband for many months. They were amazing, caring and very professional. The physicians, nurses, aids and office workers all deserve 10 stars for the great work they do!
I was almost at the edge of my life and you all pulled me back! It was painful but I needed to come back. I remember being in the Walmart when it hits me how sick I was. I made it home but started to go downhill. I only remember getting poked at my first hospital but that was it.
Christian, my Respiratory Therapist - I call him Alakazam because he's a magician! Hes my first memory after being so sick. I love each and everyone one of the care members here. They put forth their best effort to save me and they did!
Everybody here was so kind and courteous. I didn't get as much therapy as I anticipated. But I was on the high flow so I couldn't tolerate it. You hit the call light and they answer as soon as they can. They really are a team.
My father had been in four neglectful rehabs over this past year.I heard about L tech,The Select Specialty Hosptial - Spectrum Health located on the 5 th floor at Blodgett Hospitial for acute care long term patients. They have been providing the care my dad as needed. They have their own Dr.s an specialists that see the patients. That are good at keeping me informed concerning his treatment. An the staff has been wonderful.I actually can rest knowing hes now got the best care possible.I fear when he has to go back to a nursing home again from my past experiences as they don't have the level of care the patients always need. So please check with your social worker to see if this is an option.
our family has been so blessed to be able to have a loved one cared for at your facility. We know that they are being cared for as if they were caring for their own family member.
They take care of ya! They get you where you are supposed to be. A few people stick out to for great care.
I'd recommend coming here if you can!
I would recommend this place. The nurse were good and listened to me. The respiratory therapist were awesome! Make sure to bring a pillow!

The staff here is excellent. I was worried when I first got here but after the first few days the staff made me feel more comfortable about being here.
