Reviews of Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course
Love this course! Such a gem so close to Manhattan and the first public course in the United States! It is just a great city course. Be prepared to wait if it is a weekend, but overall worth it!
It's so beautiful here. You can go golfing, or you can just go for a walk aroud the lake and appreciate the beauty of the Nature.
Been coming to this course since the time I first picked up a golf club. I've had good and bad experiences, but after not playing it in a few seasons, I was as impressed as I've been there. Especially considering we were playing on a random 60° day in February! The renovated first tee box was opened as well as the practice putting green finally! Greens were in as good of condition as I can recall and most importantly, the girl behind the counter at the proshop and the gentleman starter were not just polite they were overly pleasant. Don't know that I've ever encountered that before! Well done VC! Looking forward to returning more often this upcoming season.
Nice place for a walk with family
Great course to visit when you're planning a golf outing. We played 18 holes. Some were challenging but fun nonetheless. Add this course to your schedule and enjoy.
Out of the 5 NYC run courses, this by far is the best. Chris has been doing a fine job managing the course and the staff is helpful and sometimes humorous (a grumpy bunch from time to time). The course plays well and I appreciate the 2 long par 5's (holes 2 and 12). They are my favorite holes on the course. The greens on 7, 12, 13, and 17 are very challenging. I truly enjoy playing a round during the weekdays.
Once they update to electric cars, bring back the cart girls, and repair some awful tee boxes, I will give them 4 Stars. They are not getting 4 star because it's a 4 Star course. This is hardly the case. I would give it 4 stars because, it's an enjoyable round, the staff is okay and I like the clubhouse's atmosphere.
Love this area. I've been in this area for over 48yrs. I'm sure it's a great course relative to New York. One thing that'll never dissappear is it's elitism.other than that, It's a fine institution. The nature surrounding it is ideal for it being in the Bronx. Diamond in the rough, for sure.
Vany is the oldest public golf course in the USA (as per my knowledge). It has historical significance in the realm of manny courses. Sadly it hasn’t made its presence known as other courses like bethpage, winter park golf course in Orlando which is now a historical heritage park. Vany also has the original lockers and the aura inside the club house is vintage. The front 9 misses frequency to rattle up the feeling, but the back starts hitting the soul with fantastic 14 - 18 finishing holes. Even from NY, I was surprise to see Lack of friendliness hovers around the club, it is however boogie Bronx. But was surprise to see Little Attitude enter Vany soul. Times are changing as the young blood enters the game of frustration and missed opportunity. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and city makes its presence known on certain holes, highway running next to fairways. green fairways within concrete jungle. A historic course that needs to be in heritage books since yesterday.
This is the park that I grew up playing cricket. One of my favorite park in the city. I wish the park department never took away two of us pitches. It is unfortunate that they took it away from us. But thanks to the park department for giving us the space and giving us a place to enjoy our weekends. I wish there more bathrooms. Anyways I’m looking forward to next season. Enjoy all three sports in the park!
Best shape I've seen it, in 25 years. Tee boxes still a mess, but fairways were solid and greens were perfect. We also got done in 4hrs which is rare for Vanny.
Beautiful course but marshals on duty must go out onto the course to maintain the normal pace of play of golfers!
Great muni course. Well maintained. Pace of play can get brutal on the weekends, partially bc they roll groups our every 9 minutes but also because the course has loads of beginners. That being said great course for beginners and mid cap guys alike. Staff is great, head pro treats everyone great too.
The course has a bit of a strange layout, which being in NYC I get, but due to the long distances from green to tee boxes, the guy in the club house should have at least suggested renting a cart. The greens were in good shape. Small, but enough undulations to still be a challenge. The course as a whole looks beautiful with a lot of trees lining each hole. The fairways and rough did not have enough grass which resulted in too many balls coming to rest on dirt. The sand traps were in good condition with plenty of sand in them. I'd like to give 3.5 stars but since that's not an option I gave them 4. I also find that the green fees are a bit steep for a public city course. I paid $40 to walk. I'll play here again because it's the closest course to my home in the Bronx, however there is plenty of room for improvement.
It's a love-hate thing with this course. It's close to Manhattan, I know every nook and cranny of this place, on a weekday it moves, given how many rounds are played here... those are all positives. When it's backed up, it's slow going; when the grass refuses to grow in certain spaces, have fun hitting off hard packed bronx dirt; when the wasps and hornets are buzzing around the 4th and 5th holes... run for cover. And the hamburger at the halfway house... avoid ...at all costs and opt for a dog instead. But it's home. And not savagely expensive. And a decent on course beer selection. And it was Babe Ruth's home course too.
I'm puzzled by the high ratings this course is receiving. I feel bad giving less than three starts, but it probably deserves less. Here's why:
-Rangers were moody. Considering lack of signage directing us to the first hole (quite a ways from the clubhouse), at least some form of greeting would have helped. Also found and delivered lost head cover (which someone was currently seeking, it turned out) to one ranger and not even a thank you. Strange.
-Tee boxes and bunkers are hideous. In the bunkers we were literally hitting off dirt. Most tee boxes were overgrown on also dirt.
-Several greens were rough. I'm not being picky--I know I'm on a public course. But for several puts it would have been sheer luck to sink the put, due to dead patches.
-I suspect this course is being mismanaged. We were rained out after 11 holes, and I asked for a partial rain check (it's links style course so you can't get 9 hole rain check). A kind lady in the shop got the manager, and when he came out I thought he was one of the maintenance workers--jeans and a t shirt, and he said "Hey what's up?" When I asked for a rain check he said no. I said that I'd paid 95$ to play 11 holes, and is a partial credit possible? Maybe even free cart for next round, anything? Total refusal. I understand this may be the policy and he is sticking to it, but he was curt and unprofessional, did not even try to find some positive. Not even, "I'm sorry but that's our policy." Just "No I can't do it." Okay...
-Didn't want to spend yet more money but we were hungry. Although it was 1:00, nothing was being made in the rather uncozy grill room area. There were workers there talking with regulars. We stood for a while to ask if burgers or dogs could be made, but after a wait we grabbed a croissant. Still nobody took the cue to come over so we could pay for an overpriced croissant after an overpriced 11 holes.
This has potential to be a great course. Not a bad layout, unique setting, great history. But they need someone who knows a little about course maintenance (one guy was out pulling a huge blower clearing leaves, but there were hardly any leaves--maybe work on renovating some of the bunkers and tee boxes?) and someone who knows how to create a good clubhouse setting and treat their customers with respect. There were a few nice people, for sure, but we left feeling undervalued.
If you're looking for a decent golf experience in the area, Pelham Bay is better.
Great park space in the Bronx, the more commonly used areas are kept in great shape however the trails are seriously in need of some upkeep. There’s so much history in the park that is just neglected. The geese and swans are also not afraid of people and certainly expect you to feed them, kinda like this guy lol
We like going to the pond and watching the swans, ducks and geese. Its nice to walk the path, but I wish they did a better job on maintaining it.
Great public course in nyc. Played a 4 hour round on a Monday w my son. Amir in pro shop was helpful and pleasant. A challenging but fun course.
Fun course to play right in the Bronx. Tee boxes could definitely be in better condition, but the course history and nice greens make you forget about them.
It is a beautiful place to enjoy some quiet time.
Best of the NYC courses. Can get backed up on weekends. Course conditions can vary, as it's heavily used, and there may be a bare spot here and there. Tricky little track as course management definitely comes into play here. Put away your driver and opt for a long iron on some of the shorter par 4s. Avoid the hamburger like the plague at the halfway house and go for a hot dog instead.
Is the course amazing? No it isn’t... but is the history behind the course outstanding... YES!! Oldest public course in the country and in NYC! This is a must! What a gem!
Favorite public course in the five boroughs. Well groomed and challenging.
Beautiful grounds. However should be integrated into the rest of the park a bit more seamlessly.
It was a wedding ceremony. Beautiful place with lot of natural beauty. Park, greenery and water side.
Van Cortlandt Golf Course is located in the North Bronx close to the Yonkers border. It is the oldest public golf course in the USA. Known as "Vanny" by the locals, it is the most easily accessible NYC course to mass transportation. The # 1 train leaves you just a short walk to the course. Over the years many famous people have played at Van Cortlandt. They include Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Joe Lewis and the Three Stooges.
Under new management, Van Cortlandt features seven new greens, new tee boxes, additional cart paths, improved bunkers, and dramatically improved drainage. The cost of these improvements approximates one and a half million dollars. The architect in charge of this renovation is Stephen Kay. This golf course, situated in a park-like setting, is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC without ever having to leave the City.
Great family day fun. Golfing, trails, picnicking and tennis. Catch cricket, softball, and soccer games during spring and summer.
Always therapeutic to walk the trails...
Sit on a bench and breathe...
Workout every way possible...
Enjoy time with family...
Date night... or day...
Birthplace of American public golf but it’s hit or miss as a well trafficked public course in the worlds best city. I’ve played it in great shape and marveled. More recently I’ve played it and left completely disappointed. Easy to get to via 1 train if you don’t have a car but if you have a car, you probably should play a different track with better greens.
My favorite place to play in NYC. It’s in good condition for a municipal course. Some of the holes are harder than they appear.
Antiquated electrical service at the location. Very friendly and professional. Food has literally been subpar and noticeable. I am too kind to give you the rest of my opinion.
Well kept for a historic landmark (1st municipal in USA). I think it had good mix of some wide open holes and challenging slopes, tighter fairways small tough greens. I was not happy with the tee cashier that day as he strongly requested a single payment rather than each. No long wait line and we wanted to pay separately. I say course is a 5 star due to my 1st points but had to knock 1 star because of poor customer service.
The Empire State Trail rolls through this great park. Govidat.com
The staff here is great regarding hospitality and friendliness.
The course itself is not very long but the way it's set up, it can still be a bit of a challenge to the bogey golfer. Longer, straighter hitters may find this course super easy because most approach shots will require a wedge or short iron in.
The course conditions are sub par but considering accessibility, it's an ok track to get some reps in.
The greens may be slower than most public courses in this area but there are a few with some really drastic slopes that can still be a bit of a challenge.
It's a big course with challenges for every level. Hard to play without a cart.
You can walk, used bike, see duck, play golf, running, cross country race, adventure
It's still early in the season and I know it's a public course, but the tee boxes had no markers, aside from some twigs. The greens were either really hard and fast or soft and slow, making putting a frustrating experience. That said, we had a great time out on a beautiful spring day. And I love those crazy last three holes!!
Just a relaxing place to come and sit on a beautiful day and watch the swans and enjoy the breeze.
I had my baby shower here on 11/3/18 and it was truly a wonderful experience. The owner was extremely helpful in guiding us toward the right Set up. He knew I wanted my event on the deck and though it was very windy, he made a few suggestions and made it happen. The staff was very helpful and did their best to make the day go as smooth as possible. They allowed me to set up early and provided me with the chairs, tables, and linens. I was given freedom to decorate however I wanted!! However the deck doesn’t need much decoration, it’s beautiful on its own. It went well with my fall themed shower. I was able to fit 14 round tables each one with 10 people and there was still enough space to dance and play games. I would definitely host another major event here. I loved it!!!
Old nostalgic golf course dates back to 1895. Tee boxes are in bad shape, because of amount of play. But greens are in great shape.
Great Place to learn,
The condition of the course has improved slowly over the last 5 years. The greens have been more consistent. The layout is a bit forced in certain stretches of holes and the crowds can be annoying if you tee off to late on a nice day. Love to take my oldest son there late in the day as the crowds have dissipated by then. Great experience overall
Beautiful spot to watch birds beef with each other. Bring the family, place bets : )
Great public course that's close to the city. You would expect a small golf course in New York City but Van Cortlandt is long and wide open. If you want a nice 18-hole course that isn't expensive within reach from New York City's midtown, then this is the course for you.
Great, laid back atmosphere. They are accommodating and everyone there is very friendly. I shopped around for a regular course and this one stood out far above the rest.
The course is laid out very well. There is a place to grab burgers and hot dogs on the 12th hole. The food is excellent there actually.
The course has a good mix of challenging and easy holes. Certainly not the hardest course I've been to, but definitely the most diverse I have found in the city.
This has become my regular place to play.
I love this course
I love everything from this course (interesting layout, fairway, green, nature and price) but the first tee-box. It seems that they never want to fix or change the plastic one. I have seen it there in at least two years already. Just don't know why.
I really enjoy this course and think its great value for money. The staff is very friendly and easy going, the facilities are pretty good with a pro shop, restaurant, bar, and clean bathrooms. The course itself is not ridiculously over challenging like Ferry Point but it's well kept, nice greens, and there are some difficult holes. I live in the Manhattan so this is a great place because it's easy to reach, you can usually get a full round in within decent time, and it's generally pretty chilled out and quiet.
I really love this place. Since the quarantine I've been going through the trails on a regular basis and STILL I keep finding new trails. Van Courtlandt may not be Beacon or Storm King but this works well for being a local spot. The trails are isolated enough where you really don't hear traffic or other people just nature.
Course is in good shape except for a couple of the tee boxes the first especially. The thing it's missing the most is a warm up area. And if you're looking for a 4 hour round you better come early. It's public golf and there's lots of duffers who have no concept of pace of play.
We took our Grandsons oit Fishing there
There are many trails. Some for running others for cross country but I like the hiking trails. There is a large field that many use for different activities and soccer and baseball fields as well. There is a horse stable on the north end and a pool on the south end. If you like to play golf there is a course in the park as well.
One of the oldest public courses in the country. Could use some TLC, Tee boxes leave more to be desired (especially on 1), green speed can be inconsistent.
History alone makes a round here worth it though. The finishing stretch of 15-18 is sweet to play in the late afternoons.
This park has been a great place my hole life. I have cats that passed away buried there. It was a great place to go with family and friends. Had great BBQ's there. My dad played paddle there for 30+ years. My children were raised there... Well like I was, we frequently went there to play paddle or handball.
We also went to the pool
I've spent many a romantic days in this beautiful park. Many things to do and plenty of places to get lost in the woods. Picnic area , public pool , handball , basketball , baseball, golf ect everywhere around this park a tranquil river when one can fish.
Pleasantly surprised for a public golf course in the Bronx
I went in to inquire about catering and the young man in there was so helpful and kind that I am having some friends stop by during the week for some food
Great place to visit it has a little of everything. Golf course, track, handle ball and tennis courts swimming pool, baseball fields, open fields. Transportation, the number one train, buses, vendors, playgrounds. The Van Cortlandt Museum, Van Cortlandt Cemetery. Trails. Bird watching. It's a great park for its size. Come check it out make yourself a great day.
What a surprisingly nice course! Really really cheap to play during the week. $27 during the week after 3pm with a cart, that's about as good as it gets.
Me and my girl went and the staff was amazingly friendly which can sometimes lack in NYC. While golfing, I looked over and asked my girl, did you almost forget you in NYC? That's what it's like. It's an easy course, not to challenging, and the fairways and roughs seemed to be well groomed.
The tee areas were a bit dingy, and it can be a hassle when you dont use a tee on pars 3's like me. Food prices are standard, and drinks are a bit on the expensive side, not much selection in terms of craft beers, but that's not that big of a deal :)
Overall, it seemed very family friendly, pretty fast play so there was not much waiting. Definitely will golf there as many times as I can. Hope this review helps.
Drive it past the creek to enter the VCGC Ed Hall of Fame
Oldest public golf course in the US.
A Bronx hidden golf gem with a ridiculous history stemming with all sorts of visitors.
Course is kept in the best condition as possible, however divots are all over the place that other golfers do not take care as noted in the etiquette signs and score cards. The staff works their best given the budget and equipment. The course design has it good variety, there are some pesty insects especially on holes 8 thru 11. Sand bunkers need some work. Surrounded by 3 highways, and sectioned off to 4 areas thanks to Robert Moses. Overall a good experience, more of a city golf experience.
Great to visit and play at the oldest public golf course in America. Fair, straight, and gives a decent challenge. Enjoyed several holes with great elevation. Fun!
Best option for Manahattan golfers: Can walk from the 1 train, the course provides opportunity to hit all of your clubs, it might seem short if you're hitting your driver well, but several par fours make more sense to hit a shorter club off the tee.
Kept in reasonable condition, it receives a ton of play so the greens can't be cut too low.
Recommend for any City Golfer.
Best public golf course close to the city. It’s a long course, a lot of fun and beautiful. The back holes are really something.
Course in good shape , bunkers need some attention ( if you land them lol ) staff are friendly and helpful , you pass the drinks stand three times !!!!
Food really good too !!!
Always in great shape, highly recommended.
Love the guys who work here. Place is overcrowded and tee times are scheduled too close together. Just played 14 holes couldn't finish Yahoos jumping from hole to hole, guys hitting 3-4balls per hole no supervision. Gotta be watched better Rangers could do a much better job where this is concerned.
Pretty decent course very close from NYC. It was little too crowded, lack of staff members to ask questions or buy drinks.
Better off bringing your own drinks.
Golf was enjoyable, weather was great, but my wife left a utility wood on our last hole. We cannot believe nobody turned it in! Doesn’t speak well of the Van Cortlandt Golf Course player!
Challenging hilly course, but crowded.
Excellent and friendly starter
Forgot name but stater for over 30 years. Nice guy always smiling pleasure to talk with
From Max madridejos /Philippine gold association
One of the oldest golf courses in the country. A bit drier, with Fairways and greens showing their age. No driving or chipping range. Anyone living in NYC, a concrete jungle, will appreciate having access to this course. Play here quite often.
Honestly I was just passing by and I guess the red light was to long so the guy and the women who runs the cart on a forklift came late to work so she didn't had to advise for the rest of the people how joe biden keeps rambling non sense and gets away with it, but when I do I don't.
Because if you did understand my review, you need to go get your self checked out.
Course is nice but the Manager was rude and swearing at golfers.
Lovely course with lots of trees. The final three holes are a ton of fun to play. Winds its way throughout the Bronx, never losing an urban feel in a secluded environment. Affordable too.
Course in good shape. Played my best round the other day there. Fun course!
Huuuge and great level walking. Tons of forest paths
There along the pedestrian walkway, you will find the test stine columns used to build Grand Central station. Pretty amazing. The Bronx, a happening hub back in the day.
The 4.2 rating which is higher than Forest Park is a little misleading. The fairway and greens are definitely 2 tiers below Bethpage. While we were playing, the course had lawn mowers starting from hole 3 all the way until hole 17. I mean, 1-2 holes I can understand, but having that sound on while you golf is extremely annoying, BUT the MOST important is how am I suppose to alert you that I'm about to hit my ball? The biggest concern is the ball hitting one of those guys. It is beyond me why they would choose to do this in the morning. Also, the mowers seemed to be always ahead of us.
Vanny is a public 18-hole course with a nice mix of hilly and flat holes. According to NYC data, it is the oldest public course in the US with 6,096 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. The course rating is 68.6 and it has a slope rating of 110.
It's located right at the end of the 1 line 242st Street.
For avid golfers: the course isn't well maintained, so be prepared to be on the course for a little longer since it is a slow course. For beginners and for fun: there is no practice range.
Overall, though, for a public course in a public park, it's nice and has some challenging holes.
It's a fun course for any golfer--I'm an average golfer who loves the sport and the course offers great challenges for me. Never a dull moment. No driving range, of course. Mosholu Golf Course, which is right across, has a driving range and a compact 9-hole course which everyone plays the whole 18 and the traffic jams there are horrific--almost like the I-95 in rush hour.
Many good players do play at Vanny, as it is aptly known among locals and they find the course fun as well. The traffic within the course can be tough, but early bird and twilight hours are best (one can finish a round in 3-hrs or less). If you decide to tee off anytime after 10am or noon, expect to play for a good 4-5-hrs. Yes, bring aspirin and your unlimited data plan to fiddle around while waiting to hit between some of these holes.
Decent and (somewhat) helpful staff... Food is ok, but I wouldn't pay for it since the quality is so-so. Go for the brew, as that is still expensive but at least you can't go wrong with it.
A spot for everything!!! Barbecue, pool, tanning, fishing, all sports easy access by bus and train
Beautiful golf course, quiet and enjoyable. Feels like another world.
I love this park! Nice trails and amazing nature around you. Great place for picnic too.
Today was the first day and as you can imagine there were plenty of folks outside enjoying the opportunity to play. Was disappointed at the lack of communication today at the course. Holes 15-18 were closed and a few temporary greens. That wasn't the issue, the fact that there were no signs indicating that specific hole had a temporary green was disappointing.
The golf course could be maintained better, especially for the steep price of play. No same in the cart to repair fairway divots, the tee boxes need seeding and more frequent location rotation.
Nice park, there's a pool, running track, nature center, tennis courts. A pond to fish and on Fridays during the summer there are rowboats for the public on a first come fist served basis.
Oldest muni course in USA. 2 600 YDS PAR 5s..iconic lockerroom with moe, Larry, and curley, sugar ray Robinson, lockers..interesting course all around.
Decent upkeep for a city course. But it's worth playing here just for the history of the course. Nice layout too.
Very traditional and impressive
The best course in NYC. May not be saying much but it's definitely a good escape from the city while still being accessible by the 1 train.
"Vanny" is Great!..it's an old course...not the most picturesque but it certainly deserves respect. Much like Rock Creek in DC, must be accurate or you'll loose many balls. A real player's course!
Good course, great last 4 holes. Good bar
A taste of the good ol' days! Check out the locker rooms from the movie Wallstreet upstairs! It's a public club house dripping with history, and because it's public, you can just drift into the clubhouse and walk around.
Easy to get to from Manhattan, fair price for the round. Don’t expect to race around in 4 hours. Staff needs to work on hospitality...
I always come here to enjoy nature!
My go-to place to decompress and relax. I routinely walk along trails, the track and hang out with friends @ the dog run called Canine Court. Frankly, I love this place.
Beautiful Place to Walk and get fresh air or do some Fishing in the lake with your kids and Family or go Golfing
We enjoyed a good round there. Very friendly and good condition golf course.
Interesting layout.... there are little groups of holes spread out. Fairways are tore up as expected but there is enough grass you could play it so if in the fairway you could move it.
Love it lots of space for golfing historic site been here for decades hidden gem of the Bronx
My go to spot for nature in the city. Waaay better than Central park. not crowded. lots of back woods
Great spot for walking, jogging, soccer, baseball, football, picnicking - outdoor activities. Right by the last stop of the '1' Train, going North from Manhattan.
Lovely and peaceful place ☺
Great bike trail from Bronx to Westchester. No traffic to navigate just bikes and people walking.
I always enjoy Van Cortlandt. The course is long, has nice variety and is affordable. But it's a NYC course so you have to know what to expect, like some beat up greens and some slow play.
Very nice public golf course. Challenging but not overly difficult. Good length. Behave off the tee or pay the price.
Greens were pristine... Course was well maintained especially for this late in the season
Well maintained golf course around the park. Fun holes and friendly staffs.
Very nice experience. Also, saw a Hawk scoop up a squirrel. Squirrel broke free but what a show it was.
Great course. Highly recommend it!
Biggest park in nyc , tracks trails, baseball field nd soccer . There is also horse stables ,swimming pool nd picnic areas
They have great spaces for BBQ and there's a pool as well. A good place to bring the family
Beautiful sprawling parkland course, a few tricky holes but not overly difficult, friendly staff and good food and drink. Would definitely go back!
It's a nice quiet environment, great for families. It has several cricket fields and areas for children to play
Teeing ground bad no grass.... cart fee too expensive. course conditions not bad
It's open, green & having all required facilities of a good park .I really appreciate it's up keeping by its management/staff.
This historic range is America's first public municipal golf course located in New York City's third largest park.
Love it ,play here anytime, nice staff and good golf course
A very peaceful and enjoyable afternoon with my partner and puppy. Nice park with nice people. No rowdies 😊. …
Great shape in November. Love the fall view too.
Nice course for a change of pace. Get an early tee time if you don't want to have a 5 and a 1/2 hour round
Tee house was well equipped. Lots of member's bounces on the course
Good for exercise, walk, play ,is really fun
Beautiful and historic course. I would have added a star if the greens weren't so slow...recently aerated.
Love the pool great place to take kids when on budget 😜 (free) …
Didn't know we had such a beautiful lake, must go again, calm, relaxing just live it
We lave this park is big and it has a lot of activities!
