Reviews of The Claw at USF
This review relates to the condition of the public driving range. The grass area for the USF is understandably in good condition; however, the public hitting "turf" area was in poor condition to say the least. The course itself appeared in good shape and is a true value at the price. The main pro shop remains closed post-COVID so be prepared to find the "pro shop" in a shipping container on the edge of the parking lot.
Yea, it's tun down but the course is still just fine. The cart paths are clear and the staff are helpful when needed. It's a very budget friendly and fun option.
Really enjoyed this course, well maintained and fun to play on! The girl working in the pro shop was very professional and helpful, will definitely be coming back soon!
Greens were in really good shape. Love this track so much, I hope they attend to the tee boxes and fairways next as they were in tough shape. No clubhouse to cool off so makes it a very hot day in the summer. I called a few days before to book a tee time and the company they use would only let me book if I fully pre-paid beforehand. What a ridiculous policy that needs to go. This course is nowhere near nice enough to demand pre-payment. I called the pro shop directly and they booked me without any sort of pre-payment so confused as to why their home office or whatever you want to call it would not take my tee time.
Nice course if you really can’t get out of the USF area, but for a similar price there are better tampa courses. golf carts need an overhaul, and entire course needs a facelift. Still a beautiful place to spend a sunny Sunday golfing 🏌️♂️ …
The course is getting back to the way it use to be, well at least the greens are. I have not played the claw since last year and I was pleasantly surprised. I doubt that this course will ever reach back to its full potential, but for now it works just right for me. I spent 20yrs in the military, so them not having a decent rest room is not a negative. Having to change our cart twice most definitely is. The carts are in rough shape and have seen better days.
For about $40, this is a nice course. The greens are near perfect. Yes, the rest of the course is not in fantastic shape and could use some love, but again, near perfect greens and around $40 on a weekend. That's 5 stars in my book.
I challenging course with some very interesting holes. In some disrepair, but the staff was very friendly and had a great atmosphere.
After reading some of the recent reviews I was worried after booking, but I don't know what some of the other people were talking about. The greens and fairways are in better shape than Rocky, Roger's and Northdale. And the carts were in good shape. A great course overall.
So I play here maybe about once or twice a week for about a year and half. They have done a ton of work and definitely turned it around. They plan on putting more work into it. This course has a ton of potential!
It is a pretty place. I don't play golf so I can't say anything about that. The staff was nice to me.
Could use a little grounds keeping work done on a few holes and greens. Friendly staff had a nice round.
I’ve been taking classes at The Claw with Nate for 3 months now. I was able to improve a lot, he has been pretty helpful and a overall great teacher to help me improve my game. 100% recommend his classes!
Course isn’t in the best shape but the new grounds keepers are doing an amazing job bringing it back to life! An come on $40 at 7 am on the weekends you can’t beat it!
The "home field" course for USF fans. Could use some love but the price is right, the people are friendly and laid back, and usually not slammed pack.
Usf xc race. To hot to run. 84 sum humid but they did it.
Long time classic golf course, with alot of history, under new mgmt, and trying to get your business back, text message specials, The Claw is tough track, especially if you are not straight.
I'm standing on Hole #4 tee, still waiting. Clubhouse attendant said no one when I asked if anyone was before or after me, and mentioned it's a hodge-podge. 50min to get through 3 holes and wait, it makes me wonder if I should stop and ask for a rain check.
Can I have a part-time job as a starter?
I’ve been to the claw over many times over the last couple years. I went today again for probably the 15th time and first time in 6 months and was in the best condition out of all the times. The greens were perfectly cut with no holes, no super long grass in the rough, staff and maintenance clearly have been upgraded. Always a great time at a great price but for $22 18 holes and a cart for student fee it doesn’t get better than that. Good work y’all
It has 18 holes...that's good. Its a good course, if they'd put a little money into it. About half The greens aren't in very good shape, the clubhouse is "condemned", black mold if I'm not mistaken is what he said and apparently it's been like that for a while. They're running the course from basically a small trailer in the parking lot because of the clubhouse being closed.
Fairways and greens in great shape. Anything around the greens or fairways are nearly unplayable. Multiple holes where trees need to be trimmed/taken down. Course punishes good golf shots on multiple occasions. Very friendly staff none the less, great value.
The Claw golf course is a challenging course with several demanding tree lined dogleg holes, elevated greens, and reacheable par 5's. Well managed and courteous staff, hello Dave and Hunter! Greens always in excellent shape and rolling well. It is the perfect layout to walk as holes run contiguous to one another. Prices are resonable and their are annual memberships for regulars. Go Bulls!!
Fun course to play on! Recommend going around 2pm when pieces get a little cheaper. There's not really a pro shop right now as the building as close down but they're working on fixing that, and that also means the main restrooms are a trailer too. But for a good round of golf on a challenging course this is a good pick.
Good course as far as conditions go. Tough but not terrible. Greens were OK. Really need to rebuild the clubhouse. Price is reasonable.
I golf there about once a month. It's not the best kept course in the area but it's cheap so I keep going back there. The greens are in decent shape. The golf carts last the whole 18 holes. A few changing holes and a free easy ones. Overall, it's an average golf course. If the greens are in better shape, I would give it a 5 start rating. If you sign up for there text or email subscription, they will send you special deals. I get about 3 text per week from them.
This is just my initial review of the place. Only visiting the driving range. Not too bad, driving range hitting area was a little rough but not a surprise as most public driving ranges are about in that shape. They have a large hitting net to trap balls which is a nice touch. My one gripe would be the practice putting green can only be used by the golf team which is a shame there’s not a practice putting green for the public. Really need to work on my putting. My best guess is that people using in the past didn’t treat it properly so they had to ban the public. Probably won’t go back because of this and I’ll try to find somewhere to work on putting but overall can’t call it too bad of an experience. If I ever play the course I’ll update my review based on that. Go bulls!
Course good and fair, lots of water but only thing that took from it is they have connex trailers for the club house and portable bathrooms. Main 2 buildings are condemned and not usable. Usf has money so use some and rebuild so the college golfers have a great home course!
No driving range. No food. There is a cart girl. Price is right. Pro shop is a storage container. Building s have been condemned.
I’ve no knowledge of the current economic, financial, or political issues with regards to The Claw, but the current condition of certain elements of the course and its facilities are heartbreaking to this alum. I only hope there is an effort already underway to restore USF’s course to its former glory and make improvements commensurate with the rest of our excellent Tampa campus.
The course itself offers one of Tampa’s finest game-management challenges, rewarding well-executed risks, patience, and accuracy. Add that to its natural beauty for a winning combination. Most of the critical elements of the course remain is serviceable condition. Tee boxes, fairways, greens and bunkers were in good shape. Grounds adjacent the cart paths need help in places. Typical municipal condition, priced appropriately. Other than the primary concerns, the only nitpicks were the cart area’s restroom cleanliness/function (it wasn’t) and running into an unyielding sixsome! at the 14th.
Huge thanks to Carl for modifying our tee time at the last minute due to weather, and to Dave for making our round a smooth+positive experience under challenging conditions. Top marks.
Love this course! It was my home course while I attended the University of South Florida. And since I live nearby, I still try to play there regularly. The course is very well maintained and is relatively challenging. Given the price point, it's a great place to play. There is never a shortage of wildlife either.
Love the course even though it chews my game up. Greens are super fast. Nothing sticks unless it comes straight down. Fairways and rest if course is pretty shabby. Pro shop is now in a trailer in the parking lot. Bathroom is a porta potty trailer. Cart barn should be condemned.
Great greens great price , especially for Vets. Little rough around some of the greens play as ground under erpair. And enjoy
Very interesting. The greens were the very same as they were in December
There is very little grass and some sort of black stuff. With no grass, the putts kept going and going. We will try it again
I love playing the Claw because I am surrounded by what nature has to offer and it's a peaceful environment, and it doesn't have houses everywhere so I am not in somebody's backyard. Great course to learn how to play, although it has a lot of narrow holes and water so bring extra balls.
Enjoyed the layout. Very challenging yet rewarding
Very fun golf course at an affordable price. The fairways were a bit rough but definitely don't effect the round. I thought there would be several irritating students since it's based near USF but that actually wasn't the case.
First time visit, conversation with the Pro Shop manager, (Carl) made me feel right at home. He informed me of some things that are happening during my time in the area. I recommend and will return hopefully every time I visit the area.
Course playing well, greens rolling true. Great value!! My Alma mater has a really nice track! Very challenging course.
Course is challenging. Course rating from the farthest tees is 71/72. The greens and tee boxes will have dry spots here and there throughout the course. Overall I like the course for the price and condition and challenge. Worst part about it is that I always get low battery carts which die on me 4-5 holes into the game. This has happened a couple times. Other bad things have to deal with the wait the course can build up towards the end of the day, especially with everyone coming in for cheap prices after 4/5 pm-- people will start to jump around the course to play as many open holes as they can it slows down the overall play. Wish the starters had better control of this, never see them checking the course throughout the day.
Good tight course at USF. Challenging narrow course with a good layout. Greens were in good shape and rolled quick. Fairways were well maintained and the claw was challenging as usual. Staff was friendly although there was no cart service. Good course at a good rate.
This is an excellent course. Very well maintained, beautiful landscape, friendly staff. Don't listen to the bad reviews - go out and try it for yourself. I liked it so much that I bought a membership after my first round. Have fun!
I was very disappointed in the club house and grille. Buildings are condemned and the pro shop is a temporary building in the parking lot. The course is in decent shape. Greens are very fast. Ashamed tha USF let it get in this shape.
This place is kind of a dump, the fence is dilapidated, termite infested and falling apart in more than one spot. Supposed to be the "prestigious" USF golf team location. Hah. If it's so prestigious, why can't they afford new fence?
Edit 2019: I lived across from here for 3 years, so naturally they got a new fence the month we moved into our new condo xD new fence does look really good.
Good price. Greens were ok, a few were better than others almost perfect. They are small and elevated (that old early 1900s style). Very affordable and even more so thru golf now website/app.
The green fees and food/beer prices are decent, the shape of the course was very average. What kills me is the pace of play. I'm a very average golfer, low 90s is a solid round. I found it impossible to develop a rhythm.
The course is relatively well maintained for the money. It's challenging and long overall I like playing the course. It's greens and fairways are really eaten up on some portions and during the dry seasons the course is in worse condition. Practice range is mostly for short game.
Ya know what, lot of times in golf you get what you pay for. This is a nice enough course for the money and challenging enough for most. Not the best but far from the worst course I have played and good for the money you pay to play it. I will play it again for sure.
Great course for the price. Some of the fairways were flooded on the back nine. Go early as I have played here 3 times and twice have had the sprinklers shorten my round.
Affordable, approachable. I go here just for fun with friends who want to learn. Chill place to hang out during the winter. For the price you can't complain about anything, it literally is a practice area. I actually like the carefree and friendly atmosphere.
Play here at least once every winter when I am down in Tampa. Great value, great service. Tee boxes are always a bit below par, so to speak, but the course is in fantastic shape! Highly recommend.
I love USF but the golf course is in pretty sad shape. Greens are dry and dead and fairways are sparse and bare in places. The bunkers are surprisingly some of the best around.
Course is always in good condition. Driving range needs some help. It's more sand than grass, and range balls are weighted so don't go expecting to figure out club distances.
You get what you pay for.. Staff were halpful anp pleasant enough, the bunkers and greens were in good condition however the fairways and tees weren't in great shape the general cleanliness of the facilities could also do with a clean
Greens were decent. Fairways below average. Teeboxes below average. Rough was weeds. Not in very good condition.
Great course, cant wait for the greens to not have the bad dirt spots in them!
The course was indecent shape. We got on right away and the price was very fair.
Usually a great price, especially if you book online. It can be challenging with some of the narrow fairways. Be prepared to spot some large gators on the course!
My favorite place in the world. Tough, narrow, lots of fun. Lots of Wild Things 2. Greens are a little raggedy compared to what they have been but otherwise great place
Tight little track, great irons usage, very few straight fairways, good value, greens decent, I made a couple 20+ footers!, will return!
Played the course today and it was in great shape. John and the staff were very courteous . I will be returning soon.
Challenging layout but could be because I'm terrible at golf! Loved playing here. If you don't mind skipping a few holes the 5pm and later prices are the best.
Place is decent especially for the price. Most of the time we can get in at 15-20 bucks a head. Course isn't bad at all like I said, for the price.
Not bad. Some patchy greens, a few patchy tee boxes, but a fun course that's tighter than most. Worth the price.
Fairways are a bit wider than many people say. As with many Florida courses, they could use some cooling fans around the course to help golfers during the summer heat.
Very good and challenging course. Only issue is they constantly over book the course with long waits on each hole
Pretty decent course for the price, a few of the holes had some pretty serious water issue and a few rough spots but overall I enjoyed playing here
Course is in tough/rough shape. Needs some reconfiguring and maintenance to make a better course for the buck !
The Claw was good, buildings going through renovations so no food, shop, or restaurant.
5/4/22 Some of the fairways are in really good shape. Now they need to work on the tee boxes.
Under a lot of maintenence currently but still a nice course!! Can't wait to go back!
Very nice course! Need ice for your beer though.
The course is in great shape. For the price you can't beat it. I would strongly recommend this course.
Good course and good value but a bit more difficult than you would expect. and holes that used to have water don't any longer.
Slow pace. Ok conditions. No clubhouse right now. Great staff.
Played today, course was tough but was in good shape. Carl was great ,really had a nice time. Thanks.
When it's good, it's good. But when it's bad, ooooh boy is it bad (conditions). Most shots out of the rough end up being like hitting off concrete, sand, or mud.
The greens are fairly nice here. No clubhouse is an issue. And where are the bathrooms located?
Great Track....Lots of Challenge Holes....Greens Are Rolling.....
Cheap tee times. The course is challenging, but beautiful. Can be crowded, but a solid full length course.
I usually take a round of golf in at this course once a year when I visit Florida it's a nice little place next to the college I wouldn't say it's the best course I played but I like the challenge that it offers not always in the best of shape but you got to figure it is what it is when the revenue is distributive across the golf course so that area gets cheated and maintenance is one of them
Lots of wild life turkeys, geese gator. Course was very demanding greens not in the best shape.
Good price for 18, but I've played here a lot and never seen the course in "great" shape.
Tough course. They do a good job maintaining it on a very limited budget. Don't come here and expect a country club but do come here with your A game.
Good value and a fun course! I always enjoy playing here.
The greens were good with only a few spots. Everything else was great.
Amazing experience. Great natural landscapes and wildlife. Amazing value as well. Loved this place.
You get what you pay for in the course be maintained...still one of the toughest in the area for all skillsets
Fair to moderate conditions, good Value, good Pace, fair price, especially on a Holiday weekend during Snowbird Season
Great, & for $25, conditions, service & great layout. Go Play It!
Over booked and with no pro shop, no bar as well--at least charge less when these are the conditions.
Fast greens. Very enjoyable course.
Nice course design well located in the midst of the campus, maintanance allows for improvement
Greens were in great shape. Staff was friendly and welcoming.
A great value and challenging course for all levels of play.
See the course daily and always seems in good condition. keep it up.
GO USF BULLS
Wasn't crowded, most greens were in good shape
Great price but facilities could use some sprucing up.
Staff was very courteous and helpful when I bought the gift card.
Narrow fairways and it has a tendency for soppy fairways due to an abundance of water features and poor drainage
Student friendly. But if it rains, you'll be playing in swamp and mosquitoes
Friendly Staff- the course was challenging enough but not in great shape.
Tough course, narrow with lots of trouble and a 20mph wind doesn't help. A real challenge.
Good golf course for the price. Challenging layout.
Course and laid to close. You will be dodging golf balls from other holes.
Just stopped by this afternoon.
Very excited to play very soon.
OUTSTANDING. Went out in 30 on the front (9)
Awesome but how would you expect me to play this one?
Solid College Track...Greens in good shape
Nice course layout. Greens rough for this time of year.
Could be in better shape but for the price its a must.
Greens are in great shape right now.
Fair test of golf.nice and friendly staff
Must play..!!price is ridiculously low for a golf course like this.
Could be a very nice course. Just needs some TLC
Great course for the price. Lots of wildlife
Staff were so polite and accomodating
If you keep it in the fairway you'll be fine.
Need to fix the driving range. A hassle to hit practice balls.
Great value, in need of some tlc. Really challenging.
Low priced golf and in decent condition
Great affordable golf course
Course is old and not well maintained.
Nice par3,4 stroke course!
Public golf course at affordable rates
Great course. Friendly staff.
Greens are in good shape.
Greens are great! Challenging course

Nice course
It’s a fun place to play for a reasonable price. Just wish they’d actually build the new club house or at least. Has a beautiful layout for a club house. Definitely recommend playing there at least once!
