Reviews of Babe Zaharias Golf Course
My husband and his friends enjoyed golfing at the Babe! The food at the causal dining area is also very good. The Cuban sandwich was delish and everything tasted very fresh.
Decent old layout with character. Conditions were on point for time of year as the overseeded tees, fairways and greens had some contrast to the course. It's a fun GC with old charm.!
Another beautiful day at the Babe Zaharia Golf Course. Perfect weather with blue sky, sunshine and fresh air. Spring has come early with nice, green and great shape for golfers. Staffs were very nice and friendly. They always have some special price for golfers and classes. The golf club also offers several food and drinks with affordable price but very tasty. My favorite was special burger and fries, so delicious, I couldn’t find anywhere else has these crunchy fries. I also love the chicken wings, so good. Every Wednesday night and Friday they have special price, I believe $4-5 for burger and beer. The rest of the week would have other specials. Even though you don’t play golf, you still do can enjoy to have food & drinks here and hangout with locals.
As far as a muni course goes it’s solid. Short but in pretty decent shape, pretty good reno on the bar/pro shop so looks like they are trying to keep it up and even improve it.
Really enjoyed my round. Fairways and greens were in great shape. Will play again after the holidays!
Great place to go good food ask for Rhojan when you in there he is the best excellent customer service perfect to go with friends and family excellent golf course
Very fun and well laid out. Very friendly staff and pleasant location.
I've been here quite a few times and the course was in good shape considering the lack of rain we are having. The Golf Pro and team in the afternoon were fantastic and very helpful. The lady who was watching the front desk when we first arrived in the morning was borderline rude and started our round on an unhappy note. Luckily everyone else we saw and worked with was extremely kind and friendly.
An old course that's in pretty good shape. Fair amount of water, narrow fairways & traps make for a challenging course. The grill has great d fashioned hamburgers to top it off.
The Babe is probably the nicest course ive played in a long time!
The fairways and greens are in great shape!
You should be proud of your grounds staff!
Let's face it. There just isn't a lot of great public golf courses in Tampa. Sure you can find some good courses outside of the city but other than being able to play one of the private courses in the city limits, it's slim pickings for us city golfers. However, the Babe is probably the best public course you'll find in Tampa. The fairways & greens have been consistently in good shape every time I've visited. What really makes the course unique is that it's not built in a "planned golf community". Most of the holes are separated from the others and the fairways are pretty wide open. You can definitely travel to better courses outside of the city but if you live in the area, there's no better place to play.
Editing this review and deducting one star due to a large amount of fire ant mounds throughout the course and even on some tee boxes. For those unfamiliar with fire ants and what their mounds look like, do yourself a favor and Google it. You DO NOT want to put your foot or any body part in a fire ant mound. To course personal, please do something about this for the safety of your patrons.
This is still a sweet Golf Course. The greens are in decent shape most of the time, and it's fairly narrow. If you're not hitting the ball well, naturally you won't score well here. But if you're hitting your driver well, you'll have about 12 wedges in your hands into the greens. Watch out for number 16, because you need to stay down the left side, or you need to hit it to 90 just to reach the clearing for the dog leg LOL
If i were to have played only the front nine, I would have certainly had a less positive review. The course is in significantly better condition on the back than front. That being said, you can't beat the price for an afternoon round of 18. The clubhouse area is undergoing a bit of construction as of this writing, but there are a few refreshments available. Oddly, there also wasn't anyone (that I encountered at least) providing drinks etc on the course. A few of the holes had coolers with cold water which helped on a warm day.
The course weaves through a residential area and has some interesting sand and water hazards (most of which I found myself hitting out of). As previously noted, the rough on the front 9 is precisely that, and pretty much impossible to hit from without endangering your clubs. If you are a fairway golfer, you should be fine, otherwise, you will find you are moving your ball 10-15 yards closer to the fairway just to have a relatively safe place to hit from.
On a positive note, golfers played quickly; we never had to wait long to tee off. A round of 18 took about 3 1/2 hours. The golf carts are electric; smooth and quiet. We liked these a lot. I think the overall rating listed (4.2) might be a little high for the winter months, but the price is right and "a bad day golfing is still better than a good day at work".
Played this course with my dad for fathers day and we had a great time. The fairways weren't in the best condition, but the greens rode well and were very readable. The price was just north of $50 for two. I feel that price is definitely steeper than what it SHOULD be due to the condition of the fairways, but we had a great time and the staff were all very friendly.
I'll come back when there's a special or the fairway condition improves. Definitely a historic course with a lot of meaning to the golfing community here in Tampa. It's a pretty difficult course too, make sure you bring your SW. ;)
A nice historic course. Greens were a little slow but in good condition. Tips play just over 6000 but there are some tough holes. Nice staff and senior discounts on Tuesday and Thursday. Great course for the money.
Very, very nice people. Course is good. Straight forward, though definitely not straight. Makes good use of the available land by mixing dogleg and tight straight aways. Bunkers were in good shape and fair ways were good. Greens were firm but, cut long enough to make them a bit slower on putts (though fast on chips). Rough is spotty and there is a lot of deadpan. Very, very affordable. Good value and playing a course once owned by the Babe is a great experience. Please play.
Great place for beginning golfers and some intermediately skilled players. Advance players should not go. The reasoning for that is the course is SHORT. I have never played from the back tees before but after the second hole it was needed. I would be 60 yards to the pin using my 5 wood . Now that being said I did also use clubs I normally do not get to 4hybrid and 5 hybrid . Course is well kept and they have all day happy hour
Great place to play golf. My family was down from Wisconsin a few weeks ago and everyone in the club house went out of their way to make them feel welcome. We had lunch before we played and they thought the burgers and beer were perfect for a before round meal. It is especially a good thing that they have rangers on the course that try their best to keep the play at a good pace. Other courses do not have rangers and if you get a slowsome before you, there is not a lot you can do.
My grandsons high school had their cross country track meet here. Very nice place
My "hometown" course, even though my wife and I live in south Tampa. I've played the Babe at least 100 times over the past 20 years, and while the greens are always a bit slower than some courses, I always enjoy being out there. It feels like home, and Paul and his staff are the best. While I may never shoot in the 50's like Woody Austin did there once, I'm still counting on shooting par or better there someday!
good staff. most are friendly.. some are not when your early to your tee time and your getting rushed then turn her head telling someone right next to you some people just don't get it. i told her I'm standing right here I'm early. she shakes her head.. other than that course is awesome
Babe Zaharias is very well maintained... moreso than some semi-private courses I've seen. Tees, fairways, and greens all have great drainage. Fees are reasonable and course can be walked.
The greens are in fair condition and yes the boxes are a bit small . The staff here needs much improvement. The marshal's tend to badger you while your attempting to enjoy a golf game with friends which were paid for . I woke up and traveled 45 minutes to play this course only to get badgered and mistreated by their staff. I will not go back to this course or recommend this course ever. I am submitting a formal complaint to the city of Tampa which seems to govern them .
** Update ***
Since the above post we have returned to Babe Zaharias Golf Course and we really enjoy this course .. This course is very enjoyable and the course is well cared for. There are challenges throughout this course that will make you play your A- game. The Management here is great and very attentive to the needs and concerns of their patrons. We consider this our home course and will continue to go there for along time to come . Great Job to the Staff of The Babe Zaharias Golf Club ;-)
Good course, pace of play has always been good, rough is a little beat up
All in all, for the dry time of the Year, the Babe is in pretty good shape. The greens are all consistent and roll the same.
City owned golf course. Lower prices to golf.informal club house has burgers,& beer Friday evenings drinks & neighbors get together. 2nd Tuesday of the month 6:30- 8:00 Forest Hills neighborhood greet & neighborhood meeting, free to attend
For a novice golfer in early 40s who has little golfing experience but plenty of professional business and worldly knowledge, this course is perfect. The course is middle of the field on challenge from what I have witnessed but the tee boxes are pristine and placed well, the fairways nice and wide (still not shank proof!) and the greens are in great shape. You can tell that the staff takes great pride in this public city course (one of 3 in the Tampa Sports system that are subsidized) and are always super friendly with a very well equipped pro shop and bar/grill clubhouse. One big plus is the location and neighborhood (Forest Hills) as it is very accessible without being hidden in some elitist, stuffy HOA or gated community. The cost is slso in line with being a tremendous value at twilight and super twilight (under 20 for 18 holes with cart) to being mid of the road at peak times. Overall, Babe is a fun, traditional vintage course with a calming, established and slightly elegant feel to it that draws you in the more you experience its offerings. This course is definitely a hidden gem in which I find myself appreciating its subtleties and magic the more often I play. Now go get some!
Track was in good shape. Good prices to take a novice golfer too. My fav of the munis.
Decent course for senior rate. Greens were in good shape. Nice range of doglegs and par 3. Will play again season.
Played the Babe Nov 10, 2019 with my son. Course is in excellent shape. Had a great time. Best golf value in Tampa. Thanks.
Always a nice cheap course greens roll nice just the rough is a lil long so will lose alot of balls if u go off fair ways
Good course was alot of fun. Big greens, good for beginner to intermediate golfers. 3 star rating only because the staff was a bit off. Called in a to book our slot a day prior and checked in about 30 minutes prior to tee time the day of (usual for me) to hit chipping/putting practice on the sude to warm up. During check in was told we can’t just step right up and hit. Was a bit confused seeing how i was under the impression we hit when our tee time is? Usually how it goes. I said ok, but thought was a bit weird and made a few comments to my friend who suggested maybe people just show up and hit whenever which is why the asssociate mentioned (which i also thought was weird because as far as i know where ever i play people generally follow the tee time schedule) moving on. My friend went in to get a hot dog so i waited in the cart for a minute. I brought food but forgot a napkin so went in to get one. Was only in there for about 2 minutes to come back out to our cart being moved about 20 yards away from clubhouse facing first tee. I asked a gentleman who i noticed had been sitting in his cart the whole time if he had happen to see who moved our cart. He said yea, one of the groundskeepers just did, then proceeded to point to the employee. I later approached the employee who told me “no problem, no problem” well yea, no problem because there is nothing missing from our cart(we both had phones, friend had wallet). But i saw him drive by while i was sitting in my cart he could have just asked me to move it seeing as how there was no sign that said no parking. He agreed with everything i said and there were no problems. I would just rather no one touch my belongings especially when we weren’t in a spot we weren’t supposed to be, and i was gone no more than 3 minutes tops. Overall fun day, good course. Finished in under 4 hours which is good for a sunday. But possibly expect to be treated like it’s your grandma’s place who has a her house set up a certain way in her head which you are unaware of. And also, take the cart in front! Of the line. My other friend showed up and tried to take a cart in the back (would have just put it in reverse like anywhere else lol) and the desk associate literally ran out to tell him to take the cart in the front. Just stand to be possibly be corrected like its Grandmas!
Wow...a public course in the TSA group..this one is the best.Price is fair but the is well maintained. The pace for a Sunday afternoon was wide open.SURPRISINGLY!! Definitely recommend this course to a fellow golfer.
I'm a novice golfer and this is a great place to cut your teeth. It's clean, the staff is curtius and the carts are in top shape. Now if I could only hit par.
While there are a couple courses closer to my house in Tampa, I've always considered The Babe my home course. The staff is super friendly, the price is right, and it's never so crowded that you're waiting to play each hole. Bring your a-game to the 3 finishing holes. I've been 3 under par with 3 holes remaining at the Babe, and never shot par!
Best place I have every lived in Florida. I am from Georgia and I am use to living we're there all not a lot of people are cars. We found that living in a quite place. BABE ZAHARA golf course. The lot are nice and big, your neighbor' s are all friendly and nice. Will do anything to help another. I LOVE IT HERE. I hope nothing will change and I be able to live here until GOD calls me home. JUST AS IT IS. THANK YOU. R. DUEFRANE
Short golf course but nice as it requires skills to hit straight on most holes & fair amount of draws & fades. If you do not have a straight shot game, this course will out beat you...
Really liked the course. Easy and it's definitely set up for bad players being most dog legs go from left to right, but still a good track.
The Babe Zaharias Golf Course is a very nice, old style and well maintained golf course.
Beautiful day. Course was in the best shape it's been in quite some time. Best round of the year dint hurt either. 79 from the tips.
Very hit & miss... The course has some fun holes, but the last time I went the fairways were in such bad shape that it was frustrating to play there.
Very friendly public course.Excellent tees and greens. Great value. 6020 yds, 116 slope, par 70.
Enjoyed the course, women friendly. Staff friendly. Many of the bunkers I was in had white fluffy sand, the others was the brown kind.
I loved this course. Great layout and lots of variation from hole to hole. Dont know what normal prices are lije but was cheap when i went compared to others in my area
Great course in historic Forest Hills. Also, club house has some of the best drink specials and great burger and fries. Love this place.
Played it many times though the years.

Very good muni golf course. Greens good and some fairways tight but remains a gem of Tampa.
Got rained out. But played 4 holes and course and greens are in great shape. Will be back!
Not a bad public golf course. Not very long, most can play it from the tips.
I live 80 yards drown the 5 par 12th fairway on the right. If you slice bad I get your ball. I have two five gallon water jugs full and working on # 3. I have been here 28 years.
They are really working on the course and it's getting in better better shape every week.
First time playing here staff was very nice. The cafe looked great but service was slow to get drinks course was fun

Love this short course for the price it is great. It does have some challenging holes.
Very nice course first time played very pleased, good greens, fare price. Will be playing again.

Nice round of golf
Been golfing all around the Tampa area and this might be my favorite. Very short but still challenging with very well thought out holes and greens. Shot my career low here and it was a beautiful day and course. Great green conditions as well, will definitely be back. Oh and the red headed lady at the front was very friendly and even gave me the whole run down on the course, it’s layout and history before the round. Very solid course.
A public golf course where I was briefly employed in late 1970s. During tropical storms, the area was frequently flooded. Advances in storm water management have perhaps solved this issue.
