Reviews of Rose City Golf Course
I have enjoyed playing this golf course in tournaments and with my brother who lives close by. It's not fancy or difficult, but has lots of charm. Just a great time, every time! The clubhouse exterior architecture is beautiful and speaks to its past glory. I highly recommend this course for any level of golfer. FOLLOW ME for more thoughtful recommendations as I travel the world 🌎
Had an enjoyable scramble here. Beautiful old course with just enough challenges. Fairways and greens were in GREAT shape for September! Turkey and swiss sandwich at the little restaurant is one of the BEST I've ever had. Everything was fresh and delicious and thick deli cut turkey.
Hello all, I wanted to share these photos of this city municipal course.
There are only a few places where you can truly enjoy the game and enjoy a community spirit as well as service where anyone who likes to play and feel welcomed can play. Many can complain about pace of play but what is rewarding about Rose City is they care about growth of the game as well as the hcp players who frequent their course. Play here and enjoy the game as it is to played by all you may share it with on any given day.
I came from Seattle and will make this a track to play as well as others i enjoy.
I moved to Portland as a 3 times a year golfer at best with zero rounds over the previous 3 years. Moving to this neighborhood and driving through the golf course really made me want to get back into golf. Purchased a used set at goodwill and made my way to “The Rose”! HJ was one of the first people I met in the clubhouse and after a few rounds he pretty much remembered me by name! This golf course is one of the most beautiful park setting courses in the city! Challenging but approachable playing here and it never gets old! 20 bunkers on the course and fairly narrow fairways with tons of trees of all variety’s! I’ve met so many great folks from all walks of life and recommend this place for all skill levels!
Nice public course at a reasonable cost. Not overly long but has some challenging holes
Rose City's a good run when it's kept up, you can drive a cart all year long anywhere here. One of my favorite City courses.
During Covid we agree required to wear masks inside. All employees were cheerful and complying with the state mandated rule. This didnt story thier cheerful attitudes though. The greens were well maintained with some great dog legged holes.
Epic course, but if you are behind a group of 4, please slow your self a bit and let them play without bugging them. P.s we only payed $21
This is a very beautiful course even if you don't play golf it is a very nice place to go to just sit and watch the view they have nice park benches at the top of the hill right off the street. you can park get out and look ,that easy take some bread for the birds.
Golf course is in great shape. Hard working grounds crew were doing a great job.
Played the course 3/18. Course was in good shape, and the greens were better than I expected with all the rain we've had. However, someone decided to change the green on the 9th hole. It's under construction, and from what I can tell was a poor decision. It was a great challenging finish hole to the first nine holes, now its not.
Course is in great shape! I always enjoy playing here! It’s a fun layout and definitely worth the money!
Great course from the olden days and still today in perfect shape. The clubhouse however.....
I absolutely love this golf course. The vibe, the quality, the people, the course, the food! It's all so good and it keeps me coming back. The front nine is definitely my favorite. And don't forget to stop by the clubhouse and order some food from the Rose City grill. It's always hit the mark and tasted so good.
Tough course. Elevated greens with narrow fairways. A real challenge for shot shapers.
The half-mile trail and natural area along the north edge of the golf course is a good place to take a jog, walk the dog, sit on a log...
It was a beautiful day to be out and although the course was really busy it moved a long very nicely. I was surprised that on a busy Saturday there wasn't either a Marshall or a beverage cart out on the course.
Pros: Easy walk, ok layout.
Cons: replacement green on 2 holes. One of them is a par 3 and they shortened it up to 80 yards severely downhill, just not a fun hole to play. Fairways weren't trimmed well and the greens looked like they've been mowed a week ago.
Overall this course needs a little love and it could be a great course. For now the city courses aren't really worth the money.
Very wet day. Greens were in decent shape. Can't wait till we get some sun. Good staff.
Really nice golf course grounds. Very well taken care of.
The Pro Shop staff needs to retire. With the younger crowds looking to start golfing, you really need to put customer friendly, cool people behind the counter. I’ve been there three times now and the staff just seems crusty.
If you just go in and get out of the pro shop as fast as you can, you will enjoy the golf, for sure.
If I could give any advice, I would say, find engaging Pro Shop staff.
The golf course is in decent shape and it is challenging, which I liked. However, the food was horrible. I've never had such low quality food at a golf club. The hot dogs were $5.00 and they were like jerky, yuk!! Also they don't have a food and drink cart driving thru the course, which most other courses have. Plus they don't have a driving range there to warm up. All in all, the course is pretty nice, but for all the negatives I mentioned previously, I'm giving it a 3 star.
Great course! A great mix of long par 5's and technical par 3's. Many holes are different - you are going to experience more links style holes with sloping fairways meanwhile dealing with other holes that force you to avoid trees or fairway bunkers. The back is my favorite; 5, 5, 3, then two technical par 4's, 3,5, 4, 4. Fun course and well maintained, and MUCH cheaper than other choices in the area.
Well maintained muni golf course.
Beautiful course, friendly people, affordable rentals, and did I mention the course was beautiful?
Beautiful day for golf and to start the 2022 season! Well maintained course and enjoying the views!
Decent course, with very little oversight. I am a muni course golfer with not super high expectations when I play a course like Rose City, but will likely not return after our experience this round. Not only did we see a shirtless man golfing, we also ended up playing behind a group of 5. Would expect to see stuff like this from a par 3 or maybe an executive course, but not Rose City.
Nice park. Usually free of any litter and no graffiti. I park sometimes to get my work done on my laptop since its a convenient location for me and them head out a couple of hours or so later. T-Mobile data speeds in excess of 100mbits/sec down and 50 up on the side closest to the main park. No complaints here. Beware of dogs not on leashes despite signs requiring them to be on leashes.
Decent course to play on, play is relaxed and comfortable while the hole layout is well positioned for both long and short par fielding.
One of my favorite city courses !
I liked it he course didn't shoot the best but that's not there fault. The only problem is they wouldn't turn the heat down, lol J/K had a blast
Great place for a good, quick, quiet breakfast. The menu is basic breakfast fare, nicely done, with no table service. Just keep an eye out for golf cart drivers who won't slow down for pedestrians.
Decent course to play, but needs some updating. You can tell it's been around the block. Equipment at golf courses is normally higher then at stores, but running double mark up seemed pretty extreme
Neighborhood golf I live by here and play here most often. Hank is the best. I also like the people at the course and the people I meet there. Course is in good condition.
I take my lessons here from Tom Hinton. He is a great coach. He taught me how to play after 40 years of chopping weeds. The course is fine. I grew up not far from here so it will always be special.
I love this course. It is very well manicured for a municipal course. There are a few challenges on some holes just enough to keep you on your game but not so much as to cause struggles
I grew up playing this Portland muni. It's an old school golf course with tree lined fairways and minimal sand or water hazards. I love the greens here. For me, the greens are some of the best you will find at a public course.
Portland has one of the finest Muni golf course systems in the country, and this is an example of one of the better courses in its stable. Rose City may be out in the hood (my hood, to be exact) but it's an oasis of green in the gulch. Well-tended fairways, interesting layout, enough challenges to make it fun, and plenty of trees for me to whack my ball into. Fees here are relatively inexpensive for what's usually an expensive game, and twilight action is a steal.
I play this course regularly but it is a handful for the average weekend golfer. Although you can make some mistakes on the course and still get away with a reasonable score, it will punish you if you lose focus for any period of time. There is a premium for getting off the tee well and for approaches / chipping that limit the guesswork on the greens.
It does have some shorter par 5's and you may find yourself putting for eagle with two decent accurate shots. Putting and making are generally two very different things on this course, however. The greens are difficult to read and can be very quick.
There's a fair amount of elevation change as well, so walking the 18 is a great work out.
All of that may be either a plus or a minus for you. On the definitive plus side is its location and its availability. My theory is that the level of difficulty sends many people to Glendoveer, which keeps this more open.
Rose City Golf Course was a home away from home for my father Bob (Robert) Butz. Any time of year and in any weather. I remember painting red spots on golf balls for snowy days. My father pulled his clubs and I remember riding on the bag. I gave 5 stars for him and less than for me.
I miss my dad!
It's got a heck of a public restroom in the park adjacent to the golf course.
Emphasis on the word "public"
As in "open to just ANYONE"
As in...accessible to you, me.... And every unique and special snowflake-of-a-human doing the"Im-about-to-pee-my-pants" shuffle all across this lovely yuppies paradise of a neighborhood.
Emphasis on the word(s) "boringly better than you"....I mean, emphasis on the word "yuppie"
You can't rent pull cart.
Signs aren't very clear to go from one hole to the other.
They have so many mature trees. I end up at the bottom of many trees which you can't fly the next shot.
Great golf course. Especially for someone like me that isn't very good at golf. Nice mix of holes, hills and water.
Great winter golf... course drains well, allows carts virtually every day of the year and greens are exceptional in the winter.. The irrigation system leaves something to be desired for summer golf but ultimately the course plays well year round and seldom are players faced with 5 hour or more rounds because of slow play... Good buy for the money and a large active mens club is available
What a fun and challenging course. If they took better care of it, I would put it up there with some of the better tracks in the Portland area. No driving range is a negative.
I like the course. The guy in the pro shop seems to always be in a bad mood and has terrible customer service skills. Whenever I call to book a tee time he comes off short, annoyed and slightly rude.
Light rain does not scare avoid players away from this historic course. Pro Shop and Grill are welcoming friends before and after their experiences on the course.
It was a 90° day but playing in the shade was pleasant. Rose City rolls the ball long at this time of the season. Greens were still soft and true.
Rose city is always a nice course to play! If you can keep it straight you can get good scores!
Fun, challenging, and about a 4 hour 20 minute round. Course is in good shape. Traps have sand and greens are firm.
Best condition the plane has been in years. Good job.
Very pleased with the course. Fairway mowed and green in very good condition. Staff pleasant and helpful to players new to the course
Always enjoy playing this old school public muni..mature trees line fairways and position is premium on the drive.the greens were in good shape and rolling nice .
I golf here quite often. They have good up keeping and the best 19th in town
Very nice golf course with some great holes on it. Staff is friendly and the course is well maintained.
Beautiful course in the middle of the city
They respected social distancing, which is unfortunately our new norm. Open for business, swing a stick, have some fun and rock the course! 😁 …
Love this course! Been golfing here for years. Fairly flat but lots of challenges
The golf course has come a long way! Fairways and greens were good.
Great city golf course. Friendly holes with a more challenging back 9, good place for beginners
Always a good day at Hank's place got my first hole in one on 15 and my partner almost did it today, little hot at 102 but enjoyed it
Very fun course. Played all 18 and had a blast here.
One of the best area muni's. Great driving course. Minimal hazards and well built greens.
We went to the golf park to sled and it's amazing. There are several different hills to choose from and we had a lot of fun.
Book a tee time before 8am Monday thru Thursday it is affordable and not as busy as the weekend.
Our Ladies League enjoy playing there!!
Really beautiful, lots of trees. Can be muddy in spots.
Course is fairly well maintained and the staff are friendly. Not too difficult to play, but there are lots of hills!
Awesome day of golf well kept greens and very reasonably priced even with a cart
Great place to go for a walk. Found lots of little white balls laying around. Staff was rude when we turned them in at the concession stand
Not too crowded, and the course was in pretty good shape for as cold as it was.
Great prices, good customer service, course is great for the mid level golfer.
Tough track for a city course, although not as difficult as Eastmoreland. Well maintained and generally moves around pretty well. I play it regularly.
Only played 9 holes here but wasn't that impressed. Fairways are not that decent. Greens were ok though.
Fun and affordable golf course in Portland. Not a ton of sand or water hazards. Easy to navigate.
Great golf course in Portland area with nice rain drainage to keep the course dry compared to other courses in Winter
Great old style golf course! Well maintained for a busy public course.
10/4/17 Course is not in the best shape. Also they just sanded and aerated the greens. Worst clubhouse ever.
Very nice looking course. There are a lot of trees that come into play here so hit ‘em straight
Course is in great shape. Lots of roll in the fairways and greens can be alittle tricky.
Too many trees. Fun and challenging though.
Love this course but the rates for what you get have become a little pricey...for now 4 stars
A pleasant Golf Course to play and the restaurant Maybe a bit slow but the food is good
Awesome! Great course. Greens were fine.
Great public course, reasonable prices. Beautiful setting
Decent course. Maybe a little boring. Tough greens. Expect slow play as the rangers are non existent
I love this golf course well kept. Price is decent
People working there very nice. Beautiful course.
Wonderful shape this year, greens were great, horrible pin placement.😁 …
Nice course not overcrowded close to some good eats and not much traffic
Great day for golf with the boys! Kitchen staff is AMAZING!!!!!!
Golf was good but it was very expensive compared to other golf courses
I really like the walking trail around the golf course.....and lots of parking.
Decent municipal course. It was a rainy round, but we still enjoyed it.
Best rates in town
A really nice spot to stroll through on rainy weekends.
Im not a real golfer, but i thought it was a rather nice course
Fairways and greens in very good shape. Aeration being done starting next week.
Nice easy going golf course. Perfect for a duffer like me
Well maintained course, enjoyed the surrounding area, challenging course.
Took 3 hours to play 9 holes... I know that's not the course's fault
Convenient location and fairly challenging. Sure could use a marshal to speed up the slow play.
Good but the tough course that gets much tougher with the wind that funnels through it
Fun and challenging golf course with beautiful setting.
Great golf course friendly knowledgable staff great food
Great old golf course well maintained friendly service
It was not a fun experience, there is no driving range. FML LMAO
Really wet, but everywhere is wet this year. Greens are in great shape. Friendly staff.
Relaxed atmosphere and The people there are the best. I cannot say enough good things about them.
Nice place to visit. Family friendly golf.
great course small cost no driving range
How many years will it take until you open the 18th green?
Kinda my last resort. Course isn't the best and it isn't always taken care of
Good course to get your golf legs back for the season.
It isn't a great course but it is a great value.
Well maintained, not 5 star by any means
A classic municipal course. It's a fun and easy course.
Affordable, fun, and open course just outside of downtown.
Great little track and close in reasonable prices.
Great muni course. Fun and affordable.
Great place to jog
Great shape greens are smooth
This golf cart course is definitely up to par
Some of the best chicken wings and fries in town
