Reviews of Pelham Bay and Split Rock Golf Courses
Vin B
Played Split Rock for the first time this year and found the course to be a little rough. Some of the tee boxes and fairways were not well kept. However the greens were all in pretty good shape. The course is actually pretty challenging and i do enjoy playing here. Gave it a (3) for the overall condition which could be much better. It is a NYC public course so you get what you pay for. It's also very convenient if you live in the Bronx or lower Westchester.
Franjez
The bacon, egg & cheese sandwich is delicious. If i had to complain i’d say the sandwich would’ve been better if the roll was toasted. I played split rock, 18 narrow holes with a golf cart.
Kerrie-Ann Peters
The praise that follows not only on behalf of the customer but echos much of what the guests of our event had to say. Split Rock golf Club handled my family, guests and business matters with professionalism and the genuine goal of making sure that your event is what you need it to be. From walk through, communication, transactions to set up and complete execution. The staff as a whole worked to make sure that each point was as smooth as possible. I appreciate that there was staff at every turn was readily available and willing to assist with any request. The venue is beautiful and enough space to fit a big party comfortably. Thank you for making this event memorable!

The course is good. The golf cart needs to be upgraded. Be sure to spray mosquito repellent before starting. There will be more mosquitoes than you think.
Cedric Spothelfer
This course is a lot of fun, and while I understand the frustration over conditions sometimes, the layout and pace of play is generally pretty great for a busy NYC golf course.
My biggest gripe is the winter pricing. The green fees do NOT change despite shoddy conditions, worse weather, and overall less golfers. That is the biggest complaint, and why I simply won't play here in the winter. Save your $ for the summer months and check out the other city courses that offer steep discounts over their summer rates.
Derrick Dawkins
Both courses in great shape, both greens are very nice and good speed. With the small groundskeeper I'm impressed. Lots of Turkey and wild like on the courses.
david knox
Been playing Pelham Bay early morning with the sunrise often this summer. The conditions of the course are pristine! Especially the greens!!! Despite us busy New Yorkers being in too much of a hurry to clean a ball mark (ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF THE COURSE PEOPLE), the greens are beautiful and roll true. They've been out doing maintenance on every occasion I have played and it shows guys. Keep up the good work! Also, shout out to Andrew and Frankie in the proshop for being not only awake, but at also at work at 5am!

Played Pelham 3 times now and had an amazing experience all 3 times! The layout is beginner friendly and the course is well maintained. There are some mosquitos, but it isn’t too bad on Pelham. Played for the first time with my boyfriend a couple weeks ago and the ranger Tommy was extremely friendly and kind to us (literally the best customer service we’ve ever received at a golf course). Booked through GolfNow the 2nd time we played and was automatically scheduled on Split Rock. We didn’t know that we couldn’t choose the course when booking through GolfNow. However, the starter was very kind and allowed us to play on Pelham instead! Absolutely love this course and the people who work there! Will be back soon!
Paul Turner
Very good 36 holes of golf. Pelham Bay is the better of the two courses. Less noise from 95, much fewer meat eating mosquitoes and less searching for balls when compared with Split Rock. But the pace of play on both courses is pathetic, Bronx golfers are incapable of playing at a reasonable pace. The club needs to space the tee times further apart to compensate for incompetent golfers who don't understand golf.

Course is okay - but beware of the mosquitoes or they will ruin the fun! If you are going during the summer make sure you buy some bug spray at the pro shop - and also spray on your back (the mosquitoes will get you through the shirt)… we went during the week and there was no food (other than just some snacks offered at the pro shop) - could get water and Gatorade there though.

This place is truly a hidden gem! The place was beautiful indoors and outdoors. Super clean and well kept. The bridal suite was amazing and i loved the chilled wine and snacks they set up for me. Amazing! The service was great. The best part was the price- super reasonable!! John and his team did a great job. Despite the no-shows, our wedding was perfect! I had a great time and the food!!!!! wasss amazing!!!! yes! lol needless to say i definitely recommend this place to anyone :)

John, Al, and the rest of the team at Split Rock made our wedding dreams come true. They were thorough, very communicative, and made sure to cover every last detail so that everything ran smoothly on the day of the wedding. John was great at answering all of my questions and meeting with me on numerous occasions to discuss details. He was also great at being available for our vendor for music to go over logistics for electric/ speakers, etc. My husband and I got married on May 28th, 2022, with a brunch daytime wedding. We had planned to have our ceremony by Split Rock’s beautiful gazebo. However, due to an impending thunderstorm, we moved our ceremony indoors in the tent. (Our gameplan was set in stone from the previous day for the weather, and it was great to feel like there was the Plan A and Plan B with the timings). Honestly- with the photos, it looked just as beautiful, if not more beautiful with the florals inside the pavilion. The beautiful clear siding of the pavilion gave us an indoor/outdoor feel, so we enjoyed the view of the nature, but were able to stay safe and cool in the air conditioning inside. In fact, I think the ceremony felt even more intimate, unique, and special this way given the way our guests were seated. My husband and I were in awe at how everything looked even better than we anticipated with the décor. Al, our event coordinator was so meticulous and was great at keeping on top of the schedule, while also being flexible with my or my husband’s “go ahead” for changes. As a very anxious person in general, Al really made me feel at complete ease during the day. I wasn’t worried about a thing. He was like a ninja,- I mean that in the best sense- he was making everything happen flawlessly in the background, so that my husband and I could just ENJOY the day. Kristen and Mariah were my bridal attendants, and they were the absolute BEST. They made me feel so comfortable, and were so good at anticipating my needs. Most of all, I felt that they genuinely cared that I was having the best time… My husband and I are just so happy in choosing this place as our venue!

I had my H.S senior prom here last week in their catering house. To say their golf course is nice and clean as well as a beautiful place to take pictures and to celebrate special occasions. 😃😃😃😃 …

Retirement party: The entire planning process was easy . John was very helpful
The party was great, the staff was very attentive. Food excellent. The guest were all very happy. We all had a wonderful time
Casey Bird
Some of the best public golf in the metro area. Great layout and conditions on both courses. Don't forget bug spray if you're playing Split Rock.
Kapsy
Pelham is the easier of the 2 courses. Split Rock is a well designed, challenging par 70. The problem with Split Rock is that it's full of nasty critters that bit and suck blood. We're talking flying bugs and mites. Horrible! I wish they'd spray the rough regularly. A day on and I'm still suffering from the bites! ....and I hope that I haven't contracted the dreaded Lime Disease!! I will not be playing Split Rock until they assure me that the course has been sprayed regularly. The reason for my low rating is essentially this. No complaints about the course design & the hoapitality.
Daniel Klein
Long time golfer here
Played Pelham Bay and really enjoyed the course. It was a five hour round, but you’ve got to expect that at most municipal courses at this point. I’m a walker so I don’t mind
The layout is really nice here. Open, yet still challenging. Greens were also in really good shape — rolled true and maybe a tad slow…again, to be expected.
I didn’t have any problems with mosquitos while I was out there.
Probably my favorite course I’ve played in the city so far. And I’ve played about half a dozen
Michael Z
Course is in good shape. Has some challenging greens with tiers and slopes. Better player etiquette would help, no one rakes the bunkers it appears and sometimes you run into very slow play. But over-all very good for an NyC establishment
Rashida R
Food was not good very bland, the parking lot was pitch black and had to walk up the hill in the dark which was unsafe
William Banks
I would have never thought I would ever write a google review in my life. But I just want to let everyone know that while this is definitely a beautiful course, the mosquito problem at Split Rock is absolutely absurd. On my mother I have 30 bites after playing a round there. The entire time I was swatting them away from me. Everything else about this course is laudable. Until the mosquito problem is addressed stay away from split rock. Play the Pelham course.
Mark Elias
We played on Pelham on 8/20 and found the course to be in fairly good shape except for the sand traps. We had no issues with mosquitos. The starters had everything well organized and we went out at exactly the reserved time. There was even a cart going around the course selling drinks and snacks
Joe Labatt
Hey, lots of bad reviews here. Just played Split Rock. No mosquitoes and above average conditions. Some of the traps were very poorly maintained. Seriously tough par 4s from start to finish. Beautiful old world design. Very solid and good experience overall. I recommend this course for people that don’t necessarily need every course they play to be Shinnecock Hills.
Joanne Agruso
Bridal shower for around 80 people. Beautiful location, wonderful service.
Perry Zelinger
Played Pelham GC October 7th and no mosquitos in sight. I was very pleasantly surprised by this course after seeing a lot of 1 star reviews, but this was the nicest public course I played in the NYC area this season, and for only $35 for 18 including cart. Fairways are wide and forgiving, the course is not too challenging but the layout is fun and varied, and greens in great condition.
Gordon Thompson
Played Split Rock, and the mosquitoes were unbearable. Started on 10 and the back wasn't to bad, mosquito wise but when we played the front it was absolutely horrible. By the time we got to 4th hole, every shot I took I had about 2-3 mosquitoes biting me. Ruined my round and we called it quits after the 5th hole. We also went through half a bottle of mosquito repellent and it still didn't seem to work. Besides the mosquitoes the course was in ok shape, greens were rolling pretty nice but do NOT hit the ball in the rough or you are going to have at least 20-30 mosquitoes swarming you.
Andris V.
Bunker rakes are back! Yay! Haven't seen those, anywhere, since COVID hit. About time.
Pelham Bay is in good shape, although the poor drainage means that when it rains hard there will be puddles for days, and if selfish golfers insist on driving their carts through the mud then fairways will be patchy. But the grounds crew is doing some great things here.
Giovanna M
The party room is very nice. They also had a nice layout and let the people customize things other venues don’t really offer or make you outsource. I only have been there once for a party so far but if any other event comes up here I would definitely look forward to it and if we need to book a larger sized event they’d definitely be on our list of choices.
John T
Pelham Bay is great fun.
Course was in great shape.
Reasonable cost.
Nice layout.
Can challenge all handicappers.
Split Rock might be a little too much for high handicappers, but will give all lots to talk about.
Facilities only available at turn.
Mark Michon (Mark J, Dutter)
Played there last Saturday and the course was in great shape. Not terribly difficult many long and challenging holes. I can't wait to go back and play again.
michael mullahey
Golf course is challenging and in good shape. Greens are a bit on the slow side.DO NOT FORGET THE MOSQUITO REPELLENT ! Especially if you put the ball anywhere near the tree line.
Patrick Cox
Good - course is fine. Lady bartender is the absolute worst. Constantly complaining and just flat out rude.
Allyson Kiss
Played this course on a beautiful Friday afternoon. It was a nice course don't understand why a lot of people gave the course a bad review. The greens need work. At times there were tire marks and a lot of sand filled divots the size of a city pot hole. For the price I don't feel it was that bad. The pace of play was fast even though the group in front of us were walking and we rode on carts. There were times when we caught up to the group at the par 3 but didn't have to wait a long time for them to play the hole and move on. I've played at multiple course and the pace of play was horrible. But the course was well worth the money.
A K (NYCPerformanceTennis)
Great courses, Split Rock is the toughest and most fun! Pelham Bay is easy and most crowded because of the ease. Weekday deal comes with a round of golf, a meal, 2-drinks AND the cart for about 45$--best deal in NYC-area! On average, with my experience of playing at this course, never have I averaged more than 5-hrs—even starting on prime time on weekdays (can’t say the same about weekends since I haven’t played weekends on this course).
Amanda Astey
I am not a golfer, so I can't speak to the golf course, but the space as a whole is beautiful. I went to a wedding here and we were impressed with how well everything was set up and how pretty a backdrop the golf course made for the ceremony. For the dinner and reception we had a beautiful tent with christmas lights. It was a really nice way to keep the entire event going easily.
Cristian 07
The best public golf course behind trump in the city.
Janis Kwan
Went there for a party. Venue was very clean. Wait staff was very helpful. Food was good. Food is still good. Really enjoyed the appetizers.
EJ Sepp
Worked here as a kid and it was always one of the nicest public courses in the city. Actually this is two courses: Pelham AND Split Rock, Split Rock being the nicer of the two. Good for novices and those with patience as the greens get crowded, especially in the warmer months.
Tamika Francis
I had my wedding and reception here August 2016. This place is absolutely perfect!!! The staff caters to your every need and they are beyond professional. The surroundings are perfect for pictures, it's private so you don't have to worry about safety or random people hanging around. Compared to other venues, it's really reasonable. This place is a hidden gem. I highly recommend to anyone who's looking for an outside venue for their event. Ask for John!!
AJ Lise
Just played split rock earlier in the week. Course was in decent shape. However, in the years I have played here, I have never seen the mosquito problem as bad as it was this time. You CANNOT play here without bug spray. Period.
Danielle Russo
We just had our engagement party over this past weekend and WOW what an amazing time!! The food was delicious, the staff was great!! They made sure we had everything we needed. Jessica and Tori were so amazing!
Fiona Lutchman
My wedding was September 8th 2018 at Pelham Split Rock and couldn’t be more pleased! John, the event manager was absolutely amazing! First off, this venue is not a typical reception venue which is why we chose it in the first place, we wanted to give our guests a different experience than the normal catering hall and host a complete outdoor reception. Split Rock allowed us to execute this vision perfectly!
First off, the venue is completely yours for your entire event, for us, John ensured we had the entire day reserved for ourselves and our design team! We utilized all the spaces and our guests loved it! There was flexibility for them to move around indoors and outdoors, we had our beautiful outdoor dance floor, cigar rollers and even a food truck pulled up right to our dance floor! John ensured that everything we asked for was executed, he went above and beyond to customize our food, desserts and experience! Where else can you go and ask to change a menu completely and be met with “ok, sure we can do that for you”.
Speaking of the food it was delicious and plentiful, our guests had nothing but compliments on everything that was being served, from the cocktail hour to the specialty desserts from Conti’s who also did my wedding cake which was incredible and delicious! We met with the chef beforehand at a private tasting and he worked with us on all of our selections, he was also so delightful and pleasant! The drinks were also on point and I never had an empty glass thanks to John, he was always watching my glass and ready with a refill at the drop of a hat. This venue is so flexible and open minded, they are willing to work with your budget and offer you an all-inclusive package that really is a good bang for your buck.
On top of all of this, we took a risk on an outdoor reception and unfortunately were met with a little drizzle just as the reception was about to start, I must say John worked his butt off to reformat our outdoor setup inside and then back outside when it stopped raining! I honestly don't’ know how this would have played out without him.
Overall, if you’re looking for a unique experience, with a great staff and food, this is the place to be! I would do it all over again (minus) the rain!
Thank you John and Split Rock!!!!!!
Roland Fesel
I played split rock Fathers day. The play was slow but not terrible. The threesome in front of us was playing from the blues. One of their players couldn't get off the tee box and should have been playing the red or at least the whites. The ranger would not even talk to them. I find this at most city course and don't know what he rangers do except get to play free.
The course is in good shape. I remember playing both these courses before Guliani put the irrigation in and they were dogs. They need to work on the areas off the first cut. You get better value playing daily fee courses out east but you also have to drive an hour both ways so it's a trade off.
If it wasn't for the toll bridge, I'd play them more often.
stephen calcutti
I have played here many times . This course has seen better times. The faraway grass in places looks like it never saw water. Poorly repaired spots . Wonder what has happened ? Maybe need to replace the head grounds man.
Bob Maresca
thought it was well maintained and service was excellent . yes there was a wait - I had a 9:00 tee time Saturday- yes there were 2-3 foursomes on the tee - I teed off @ 9 :30 - but it was a beautiful day sandwiched between the rain ,cold temps and Father's Day -looked like everybody and their mother was trying to get out there- I think the pro shop did a great job getting everybody out there - I had a great day although I would have liked to have played better
Jack Chau
experience was fine. booked a 7:08 tee time expecting what would be a 4hr round but the start was backed up already! course was well maintained, some greens felt more like fairway but overall good. there was however quite a bit of litter which on many occasions were mistaken for balls!
Genny Salvatore
The course isn’t a far car ride away if you’re coming from the city. The prices are reasonable and you get a free beer and lunch with every round. Weekends can sometimes get a little busy in the summer.
Jose Diaz
Loved everything! It's safe to say that Julissa is very creating and truly passionate about her work. The details seem very delicate and perfectly put together. I would definitively recommend her to anyone who's planning an important event. Excellent job Julissa!
Suzanne Lenaerts (Where2Golf)
The Pelham Bay Golf Course and adjoining Split Rock, are two of the six courses owned by New York City and operated by American Golf. The usually higher rated Split Rock layout is a well-regarded golf course, which combines a good layout with several attractive holes and features. This tree-lined parkland layout will test most facets of your game, and should provide a round with plenty of enjoyable golfing challenges. Worth visiting if you are in the area.
Mark Nealon
Played 5/30/18. Had a tee time for Pelham but the starter told us there was an outing going on out on the course?? I guess we were supposed to squeeze in somewhere in the middle of the outing. I don't get it!? We went to Split Rock and tried there. Got out ok. The course itself is decent enough but the mosquitos were already out in force!
Nicholas Ricci
The staff in the pro shop and grill areas was extremely pleasant and professional. My group had an 8:12 tee time on Sunday at Split Rock and we waited about 25 minutes to tee off. The course seemed in good shape. The rough wasn't too much of a penalty helping facilitate play.
My only objections to this challenging course are twofold- one for the green keepers and one for the players. For the greenskeepers, the putting surfaces are extremely slow- you have to really hammer putts of any length. The biggest issue for the course is the discourteous and unprofessional habits of many who play there. Based on the condition of the traps, both fairway and greenside, it's clear that most players cannot be bothered raking them out. The worst habit is the failure of players to repair ball marks on the green. Every green was littered with ball marks making putting a chore. I'm sure this is a challenge for the greenkeeping staff. Perhaps a few signs around the course might embarass these idiots into changing their destructive habits, as I'm sure they're the first to complain about how the "staff" doesn't take care of the course!
Ed Simek
We have been playing Split rock forever and thus seen it evolve from typical NYC "Muni" to a attractive public golf facility. Our experience yesterday was really special.
For some reason while there were about 4 foursomes lined up at Pelham's first tee Split Rock was deserted. My friend and I went out at 10 am as a twosome with a cart and finished in 3 1/2 hours!
Course condition was excellent. Traps were freshly raked, fairways cut and greens rolling smooth and true. Once out in the back nine you'd swear you were at a Westchester County private club.Only complaint from a hacker like me was the fairly high rough.Guess this is a result of all the rain we've had recently.
The real bummer at Split is the loss of magnificent tree next to ninth green which was a victim of Sandy. I'm told it was well over 200 years old and a Bronx icon.
Mohibul Anik
The park is very crowded and people would often get naked in this park. People also tend to play loud music in the park.
The naked people isn't a issue tho. Cuz 2/3 they were hot, or I was drunk.
anngie Merchant
Where do I begin? John and Jessica went above and beyond for my welcome baby shower. I was in a jam where my original venue fell thru. I was freaking out, with just a few days till my event, they were able to accommodate me. They were very detailed, patient and hands on. John made sure to call in on facetime while he was on holiday, to make sure everything was good to go. Jessica was there bright and early overseeing the staff, which were all amazing as well. The bartender Johnathan was so down to earth and his drinks were on point. The set up, environment and food were amazing. The kitchen staff out did themselves, my guest are still raving about how delicious the food was. You can tell it was fresh and not frozen like some places. I can go on forever about Splitrock, it was an awesome experience. We were treated like royalty. I can't wait to have future events at Splitrock.
Mike Connors
An excellent day. Course is in great shape and challenging.
18 holes in just under 4 hours. Super deal for greens fees, cart and lunch. Ask when you sign in.
Ronald Martinez
Nothing but phenomenal. My wife and I got married this past Saturday, the entire ceremony and reception was seamless and absolutely remarkable. The food was great, the décor was great, but the most important thing for me was the SERVICE. John Bracca Director of Events, Edwin Maitre D, and Julissa were spectacular hosts!!! And gave us a great service to the wedding party and guests!!! THANK YOU!!! WE WILL DEFINITELY RECCOMMEND!!!
Matthew Ricks
I'm not sure why everyone rated this facility Poor-Fair. I think that people are forgetting that this is a NYC muni course. If you can play any NYC muni in under 5 hours, consider it a blessing. Actually, if you can play MOST public courses in 5 hours or under it's a great day.
It's a basic rule of golf that as the day progresses, the course gets more packed so if you want to play faster make the effort play earlier. Also stop acting like this is the Masters or US Open and play ready golf. Have your club selection ready to go when it's your turn and read your putt while the other members of your group are hitting.
Split Rock is by far the nicest NYC muni course. It's challenging enough to test the better golfer, but not too tough to over penalize off target shots. Overall, it's a fantastic value and definitely worth a try.
Pelham Bay is not as nice, but is still a fun course to play, especially for those golfers who may spray the ball a bit. Pelham Bay is kept open all winter, hence it's generally in worse condition to start the season. Again, keep in mind this is a NYC muni course, if you expect conditions worthy of a country club...join an actual country club!
Vasquezrock Park
Who is work outside he was really strange person we bought 4 players and 2 guests so, we brought 3 carts. But he was block the way without asked to club house. There is good course. But he was make ruined us that day.
rick sullivan
I'm a golf nut. I play 2 or 3 times per week. I've played pretty much every course in the tri-state area and I'll tell you... If you live in Manhattan there isn't a better course you can play at a more reasonable rate. Is it Bethpage? No. But it also doesn't take 6 hours to play and it's 23 minutes from downtown without traffic. The tee boxes are best up and the bunkers can be better... But for $40 with a cart???!!! There's nothing around to contend with Split Rock. Period.
Indra Limbu
Great place to play and the course is in great condition
Lissette Veras
I had my wedding at Split Rock and it was an amazing place! The wedding package, accomodation, the crew, the food was beyond amazing. They include two assitants for me and one male assistant for my husband! We had a blast!
John T
The Pelham course is in good shape except for the green on 14th which has always been a problem, and having only blue flags makes it hard to to know pin position if you don’t have a laser scope or superhero vision. Left me with a lot of longer than normal putts, not too fun but should be an easy fix with DIFFERENT COLORED FLAGS.
One thing that could make this course worth it....FLIP THE FRONT AND THE BACK. The 18th would be 9 and have great access to get food and drinks, and the par 5 9th would be a great finishing hole with the club house in the back ground.
Flip the front and back and I would play and recommend this course always, but for now...meh
Fred Pfaff
The new crew at Pelham/Split Rock are getting it right!
In years past, even when the courses were at their best, the establishment warranted a 0 on a 1-10 for all aspects of customer service.
Now, my experience ranges from 9-10.
Starters went from surly to welcoming and amusing. Pro shop desk went from fumbling to ordered, helpful and upbeat. Example 1: Couple of Saturdays ago, I called up at noon and asked how things looked at 2pm for a single. Got the report: tee sheet wide open, but "playing about 5 hours now, should be 4 by the time you get here." It was indeed. Example 2: Showed up for a sunup round booked online at Pelham two Thursdays ago, and the course had just been punched and sanded. Shop had already moved us to Split, and told some folks who insisted on Pelham, "You're not going to be able to putt the greens, so are you sure?"
Excellent.
Realize, this is a municipal facility rivaled only by Bethpage for the number of rounds/course that are played annually. So you're going to get all kinds of folks on the courses. And, like all public-access courses in the tri-state area, a high percentage of them should not be allowed on until they have lessons in speeding play, raking bunkers, replacing divots and repairing ball marks.
As a result, you're going to see tee boxes in need of critical help (particularly forward tees). But you will find greens in good, sometimes excellent, condition. And you're likely to say what my friend Jim did on his first morning at Split Rock: "Wow, this is really NYC's hidden gem."
Again, two thumbs up for the new crew. They've made Pelham/Split Rock a viable option, not a compromise.
Kevin Khederian
My favorite public county course plus an amazing golfers special, played a round a few weeks ago was open and course was surprisingly in pretty good shape for the time of year
Steve Halper
Pelham course was in bad shape. Bunkers and fairways in particular. Greens were decent. Of course operations impacted by COVID but they should note it on the website when booking.
Thomas Rivera
Great place to golf on weekdays, weekends can get pack need to show up early for tee time. Great price, comes with a meal and two drinks. Cant beat it, food is great too.
Joseph de Matteo
I attended a wedding there. Wonderful service. Couple told me that everything went off without a hitch. They were pleased. As a guest, I loved it.
Jorge Melendez
Rarely get out on time, never any water on the course and there is only one cart girl for two courses. It's a shame cause the course is in pretty good shape.
David Ng
SplitRock is the hardest golf course in NYC. Most of the par4 plays long...you can definitely score well on the par 5s. Your Driver must stay in Fairway to score...
Don Maclennan
Nice course, very forgiving.
Mosquitoes are horrible. Saw one player walk off the course. Spray well with OFF, I was fine.
John Krochak
Public course that's in great shape , be prepared for a 4 hour round though. Cart girl friendly and always out there
