Reviews of Mines Golf Club
Great fun course, tough the first time around because of elevation changes but a really well designed layout. Great deal for a really nice course
One of the BEST courses in GR. And 5 minutes from downtown? Can’t beat it.
Great layout. Greens are in amazing shape. New carts with GPS displays are a nice improvement!
When I lived in Grand Rapids this was my go to golf course. Lots of elevation changes and rolling hills with a good variety of challenge. Pretty well maintained. It can be busy and it's often very slow to play. Not a good place to get a quick game in.
First time playing here in a few years. Course is still in great shape and reasonably priced. Very challenging but also fun. Staff is friendly.
Very cool golf course with lots of elevation change. They have a driving range as well. I find the course to be rather challenging, but I am also a terrible golfer. I only play for the fun of it, and Mines is a very cool, unique, and beautiful course to play.
AMAZING COURSE just played today and the staff was friendly the fairways were excellent and the greens were even better. This is definitely my new favorite course. Super hilly and you shoot down into beautiful valleys on like half the holes. Playing alone meant I had to wait on groups a lot but it wasn't bad considering the amazing views.
Fun course! Very hilly! Ended up with more balls than I started with, which is always a bonus. Ha! Wish they had better signs telling you which direction the next tee is, but overall a very fun after work session!
My favorite course in Grand Rapids! Their driving range is just down the road from the course. A great course so close to downtown GR. This track plays like a northern Michigan course with elevation changes, rolling hills, undulating fairways. Large, fast, difficult greens that roll quick. Nice driving range down the road. WARNING: If you play from the black tees some of the par 4’s are crazy long.
Super nice track. Well conditioned and firm. A really cool routing and challenging golf course in general. Would recommend playing the right set of tees.
Went to the Mines with some buddies while I was in Grand Rapids, and I really loved this course. This was a challenging yet very fun course to play. The different elevations on each hole made it very unique. For me when I first looked at the scorecard I noticed it had some seriously long par 4's which made me a bit nervous since I only hit driver about 225 max, but most of the holes had hills that if you cleared them the ball would roll much farther which helped me out a ton. Pace of play was pretty decent for a Sunday morning. GPS in the cart said we were 18 minutes behind pace when we hit the 17th hole....but I chalk that up to letting a single play thru and stopping at the turn. One really nice thing is that if you do hit a bad shot and have to go looking for your ball, you have a very high chance of finding your ball. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Blue Tee Boxes are clearly used the most but they did a good really job of moving the tee markers around so you were not standing in a million divots. Starter was really kind and gave us some tips...one was consider Bump and Run instead of high flop shots around the greens (Spoiler here was right). Some of the greens were extremely challenging with fun/difficult pin locations...they really tested my ability to read greens and control your distances on putts.
My only thing that I didn't like was how far away the driving range was from the clubhouse, practice green and 1st tee. BUT I understand that you have to work with what land you have. So be aware that if you are not taking a cart & walking and want to hit balls to warm up before, remember that the range is a decent walk away from the clubhouse and 1st Tee. We had carts and got there 60 minutes before and still just got to the tee box right on time.
After the round we had a drink and sat on the patio which overlooks the 9th green. It was a great spot to sit and relax. BTW get a Pulled Pork or Brats post round...very yummy.
I do want to go back and play it again if I am ever in the Grand Rapids area. Great Course.
I am currently a 13.1 and shot 87.
2022: The Mines now has alcohol and food!
About 2016, they remodeled and added a small bar. They have sandwiches, hot dogs and brats. Plus a nice range selection of beer with several “on tap” beers. Well drinks too! They are making some course improvements such as leveling out tee boxes, adding more cart paths and all their carts now have GPS. The course is in great shape. Thanks Mackenzie for asking me to update this review.
P.S. I’m a member and enjoy the friendliness of the staff and chats with the owner!
2014: very nice golf course being so close to the city. Greens were very angelating and several shots you had to place verses trying to hit over them. down side is no alcohol, food or place to sit after a relaxing round of golf. Otherwise well worth the money.
Course was in great shape, carts were clean and I'm good shape. Didn't like the course much, but people played at a good pace, clubhouse staff was friendly and welcoming, and even though it wasn't my favorite course I always enjoy playing golf on a well kept course.
Amazing golf experience. Very complicated greens and the views are so cool. You really do forget you in Grand Rapids on a lot of the holes. Be prepared to score high!
Best golf course in Grand Rapids MI by far and really challenges your game. Fast greens hilly fairways maks you tune your game up really fast ..
This was one of my favorite courses in Grand Rapids for the past few years - a great, challenging layout with fun elevation changes that feels like northern Michigan golf while only minutes from downtown. This year the maintenance of the course has noticeably declined, particularly when it comes to the tee boxes and greens. We played it last night and while the fairways were in great shape, it was difficult to find a spot on most tee boxes that was flat and/or without divots. The greens were also slow and full of ball marks to the point where we were slightly moving our ball on some putts in order to avoid having multiple ball marks in our lines.
Favorite course in GR. Well kept, friendly staff, easy to book, and challenging course.
Beautiful course that is well managed with reasonable rates.
It's a course with a nice layout. Under new management and it is getting really bad. Course is being way overplayed. Greens are beat up. Played there 2 times over the last 2 weeks. Terrible pace of play. First round took 5 hours and the 2nd took over 5 hours. Appears that they are making tee times every 5 minutes and it shows. This used to be my go to golf course but you might as well save your money and go somewhere else now
Nice course. Fun and well kept. But really not a fan of how they will accept your 2 man tee time, then take more reservations and force you into a foursome with strangers
The course is scenic and seemingly true to it's name, incredibly hilly with challenging shots. Hilly to a fault at times, as you absolutely need to understand ball lie to score low. The layout is strange to say the least, with shared paths between several holes. In one instance, driving a cart around a blind corner, someone came flying at us, we thought someone was driving the wrong way, but that is how the shared path works. It also seems they've roped off a lot of the course too, so expect lots of walking back and forth to the cart.
For the reasons above, I feel as though 18+cart is very overpriced considering the courses in the area which are better laid out and don't have you standing on a 20 degree cross slope trying to knock it close.
Very well maintained course. The fairways consist of some steep hills. The greens have hardly any flat spots on them, which makes them challenging.
I'm leaving a late review. I used to live in GR and after living in multiple different locations, I have realized how great this place was. First off the course itself is always in great condition with a great variety of different holes.
However, I really give them 5 stars for their driving range.....I've probably been to over 50 driving ranges and by far this is the best non-country club yuppy driving range I have been to.
This was my first round this year and I was very impressed.
Fairways were in great shape (they are very wide and hittable).
Greens were hard but rolled very nicely-not a spot of damage.
Rough was lush but not too long. The staff was cordial and they have spent extra money to put Covid screens/dividers in some of their carts (if you want one).
I'm looking forward to going back.
Nice course with lots of elevation & well kept greens.
Par 3s - easier, but elevation changes & greens make a bit more challenging.
Par 4s - a few short ones you can drive, but a nice mix of elevation on the others.
Greens - can difficult & fast speed.
Great course located over the old gypsum mines right in the heart of the West side of Grand Rapids.
Wow, what a course. The rolling hills and challenging greens were just what I needed this weekend. The course is in great shape! Make sure you grab a brat at the turn because you're gonna need the extra energy to play through the back 9.
Really fun layout and solid conditioning. Really good value at under $60.
5 star course run by 1 star management. Golfers must be off the course over an hour before sunset, you have to make your tee time days in advance, and they aren’t open 7 days a week. It’s almost like they don’t want you playing here lol. The course itself is nice if you are lucky enough to get a spot.
Course was in great shape! Havent played in a few years but always have a fun time. Relatively friendly course from the gold men's, a good challenge if you want to back up and take on the blue tees.
Well designed course with more elevation than most in the area. Not very long (par 70) but the greens and sand traps are quite tricky. Beautifully maintained. Would definitely recommend!
The name says it all.. built on an old strip mine..if you enjoy crazy sloping fairways, and not very inventive holes, this is the course for you. Plus they charge a premium fee, $65, excessive for the conditions. The greens keeper needs lessons.
This course and I have a very personal relationship. The type of relationship where you love each other but you don't need to spend much time together. I either play very very well or VERY VERY bad. With all of that being said, it is a great course for the money and with the new ownership it has only gotten better.
The course is in great shape. Greens are fast and true for the most part with difficult undulating surfaces on some holes. Bunkers are not great but adequate. The fairways overall are nice with the exception of a few thin spots. Blind shots on a number of holes . All of these factors add up to a very challenging yet playable couse that is tough at times but fair. Highly recommend it...
This is a fantastic golf course that is very well maintained, and is really fun to play. It is honestly hard to believe it is located so close to downtown Grand Rapids. It is not terribly difficult, but a few holes do demand excellent shot execution.
Love this course. Live right around the corner from it and I go to the range at least twice a week if I can. The fairways are tuff the greens rudder. Great course to get your putting game and driving game together. Great staff to nice and friendly. It’s my home Golf Course now.
Great course, but be prepared for uneven lies.
**CLOSED ON SUNDAYS!?!?!?!**
This course easily has the potential to be a 5/5 Star Rated course all year long however I have had nothing but bad service here every time I've played. And half the time I call to make a tee time, nobody answers... not even on Fathers Day last year! Plus I don't think I've ever seen a beverage cart driving around...
Then, one evening round I played during the middle of July, I was the last cart out on the course and the kid working the Pro Shop tried to make me quit 45min before sunset and 3 holes shy of 9 all because I was the last cart... I could totally understand making someone come in AFTER sunset but considering there was easily an hour left of daylight and I paid full price for the round this course loses 2 stars for service.
Overall the course is awesome and in great shape plus fun to play but every single time the service has been horrible which is a huge shame since this course has such great potential, especially when they open their Par 3 course some time in the future. My critiques would be to hire a real Golf Pro to run the Shop and Course vs. the kid that's been there each time I've played the course... :(
We played The Mines course on the 4th of July in gorgeous weather. The course was well-maintained and the greens were well-groomed. The course is very diverse, with parkland holes mixed with tree-lined holes with impossible rough. The par 3s are perhaps the course's finest feature, with massive, sloped greens that can be difficult to hold if you stray off your line.
We played the blue tees, at 6100 yards and a 122 slope. The Mines is a second shot golf course because nearly all of the greens are elevated and contoured. While there may be many benign pin positions, none were obvious when we played. The course is well-trapped, and the traps are deep but fair.
The Mines is a course where you have to pay attention to contour to score well, and club selection is critical. This is not a course that you want to play from above the hole. It is, however, a course which is a great deal of fun. A thoroughly enjoyable round of golf at a moderate price. The club house/pro shop is "modest", but the practice facility is OUTSTANDING.
4.5 stars. Great fun at a good price.
Beautiful and friendly layout. A must play for the Grand Rapids area. Greens were running a little bumpy and slow, but considering Michigan courses recently just opened back up, the course was in amazing shape.
Nice course. Definitely a cart course with all the hills and turns. Driving range is a little akwsrd to get to but hey - with the limited space in downtown Grand Rapids, they did a very fine job in providing all the key elements to a nice course.
Fantastic course. Beautiful hills, nice GPS in the carts. Will play here again!
I just used the driving range. Seemed to be in good condition. The only thing I would improve on would be to identify the yardage on the pin flags.
Beautiful (challenging) course!
This is really a great course with excellent layout and some challenging holes. Beautiful views coupled with well maintained greens and fairways makes this an easy 5 star. Appreciate the fact that they honor Sunday by not being open.
Fun course and in good condition. Friendly staff. One suggestion would be to make a hybrid tee box cause big yardage gap from tips to 1 tee box up.
You would get 5 stars if you were open on Sundays! Great course, but foolish not to be open on one of the busiest golf days of the week! Especially with being closed for most of March and April because of the stay at home orders.
Fun challenging course. Very pretty area. B.O.B . Very friendly staff.
I've had the luck of playing many top rated courses in Michigan and Florida. The Mines was a pleasant shock. Great layout, great price, a short drive from I31. Add a million dollar clubhouse & they could triple the price. Don't understand how someone could rate it under a 4 star.
We've had our work United Way golf tournament here the past several years. Beautiful course, pleasant staff. The do a great job of organizing our very large outing.
Nice course, specially if you like hills!
I really like the layout and location of this course. Well maintained with really nice golf carts. Too bad the current staff is so unfriendly. They need to take classes in customer service.
Course was in good shape given recent weather conditions. Pace of play was excellent until a 9 hole group was inserted in front of us at the turn. No beer was available for purchase.
Being located so close to downtown Grand Rapids I was impressed the course has a natural feel to it. Compared to other courses in the area the elevation changes and sand traps make for a fun course to play.
A bit pricey but good golf. Interesting holes, decent greens. Careful navigating the paths between holes and pay attention to the signs.
It’s a nice course I try to play there when I can.
Even tho there’s a Young guy who work there I think he’s the “PGA pro” there.kinda tall guy.
Every time he see me. He look at me with scorn Maybe because I’m Hispanic. in spring Rate i found out he was charging me more money to walk 9 holes. Sometimes make me feel bad but for the love of the game I Try hard to Ignore those things.
But other then that,nice course!
I really like playing this course. Unique holes and layout. Good senior rate. Good spicy brat at the turn. My only complaint was no one offered to help me putt! 😁 …
Not very long, but the course has enough tricks to it to keep you on your toes. Greens are quick and have a lot of undulations. Thinking persons golf course, I am a big fan.
Grandson had his high school golf there yesterday, some tough holes, but very organized
This course is challenging yet fair. I'm a 15 handicap and this course allows scoring if you get it on the green in regulation. Be careful on the greens as they roll pretty quick with steep undulations.
Great course!! Highly recommend to anybody looking for a nice 18 hole course. The pro shop employees were friendly and helpful. 5 out of 5 stars.
Nice course. Good luck finding a flat spot to hit...hilly, rolling terrain, but that adds to the uniqueness of the course. Don't even think about walking this course!
Challenging and hilly course. Price is reasonable. Greens were in great shape. New clubhouse looks great! Awesome practice facilities as well.
Very nice course,can be challenging.
Course is in good shape, manicured nicely, greens putt true and hold well. One of the better golf courses in Grand Rapids.
Great course, tough greens, large hilly fairways, and best of all seniors $35.
No ball washers! Don't like playing with dirty balls!
The course is amazing. Tough layout, challenging greens, and a ton of fun to play. A must play when in the Grand Rapids area.
Very challenging golf course with a great layout. A lot of elevation changes makes this course fun to play and challenging.
Late fall golf and was very nice. They were still working on keeping the experience as good as possible.
Great course. Good selection of merch. Well managed. Course is hilly and challenging. No water.
Very nice course. Greens are quick and breaks are tough but a fair, nice course. Will play again this summer for sure!
Course was in great shape
, especially since it has been so hot & dry! Fun course to play - like the terrain!
Challenging, fun course! Several tee areas needed lawn repair.
Very challenging. Lots of elevation changes. Greens were slow but overall worth the drive from Muskegon.
Loved the course...has the feel of a northern michigan course. The greens are a little challenging but fair, loved the fairways
Beautiful golf course! Well maintained. Friendly and efficient staff.
Very nice, fairways, greens are good shape. Carts are super clean, gas.
Highly recommend.
Beautiful course but the greens are unfair. Not a flat surface on any. Kills an average golfer.
Good challenge for all skill levels. Lots of elevation change and interesting mix of holes in great condition. Not really walkable
Great course, great value. Lots of elevation changes, staff was friendly and very helpful. I highly recommend it!
It's a unique course with a lot of elevation changes. Greens are in much better shape after significant repair.
Very nice course. Greens are hard to read making it challenging. I will be back for sure.
It a nice course, but not worth the price. At the price they have it set at the course should be in better shape and offer more to the consumer.
Great course, a little above average range and round fees. Not open Sundays and don't serve alcohol.
excellent place for beginners and experts
Good bigger greens, no water hazzards. Good gas carts. Close to town. Limited menu. No alcohol. Closed Sunday.
Really liked this course. Lots of elevation changes and tough greens with huge undulations.
Great course! Hilly but beautiful. Greens in great shape
Nice course but it can be challenging, as there is not a flat piece of ground on the whole course.
The course was amazing very well kept. Small pro shop but if that is what you're looking for go somewhere like maple hill.
$29 senior rate. Can't beat that. Good course, good condition reasonable rates. Wish they served beer.
Great course, fun for all experience levels of golfers.
Great golf course for a fair price.
The course was in great shape. Always a fun and challenging course!
Always have fun playing this course, however greens were in rough shape
Great, challenging course, love all the rolling hills...
Great course, great condition semi reasonably priced, obviously not one that I would walk!
Fun course to play with lots of elevation changes. No booze sold here, but BYOB (no big coolers).
Very good shape, a great challenge for any level golfer
This place is a hidden gem, they do a great job with the course maintenance and the greens in particular are very challenging
Great challenging course with tees for all skill levels. Highly recommend this course to others.
Super fun course with rolling hills and beautiful scenery
Course is in great shape this year and the new club house is really nice!
Friendly staff and course was challenging but fun!
