Reviews of Charwood Golf Club
I love this golf course, what I consider my home course. When I first came out here early 2022 it wasn’t as busy as it is now, which is a good thing for the club, but this past weekend I didn’t get to finish 2 18 hole rounds that started at around 2:00 . I think part of the problem is people can just come in and jump in and get a round but it’s unfair for people like me who call/ or book the tee time online…
Still. Love the course esp in the spring/summer, great employees, great prices.
Good experience, course was in good shape and much improved from what I remember a number of years ago. Need a better job of managing tee times and golf decorum. Guy in the group in front of us was in flip-flops and played half the round with no shirt.
Charwood has become one of our "go to " courses in the Columbia, SC area. It's not a long course but, the course does not give up any holes.
You cannot just go there and overpower the course.
Hitting your ball to locations is a must.
The greens are tight, true, fast and have plenty of levels ... a 3 putt is always in play :).
Fun course. We'll keep coming back. Recommend everyone give "The Wood" a try.
Nice course with a really good layout. Not a lot of water hazards and the fairways were in good condition. The greens were in pretty rough shape but they acknowledged this when we were checking in (and one of the greens had been vandalized but they were working to fix it). All in all a really nice place to play
Play here regularly since it’s close to the house The course has a good lay out and some of the greens are challenging I’m pretty sure that’s golf
I feel it’s in good shape most of the time and love the fact that it’s a laid back environment I will definitely continue to play/support Charwood
I was actually going to get a membership at oak hills and from reviews and photos I didn't think this course would have any challenges but was wrong. This course exceeded my expectations by a lot. It really is a nice course as far as challenge and beauty of the surrounding area. There are a couple greens that need attention and some spots on a couple of fairways that need some love. Don't let that stop you from playing this course is really nice. I voluntarily paired up with someone and there were two groups of 4 in front of us of course they didn't let us play through but it only took 3 hours to play 18 which is very very good. Excellent pace of play. I'm buying a membership, to bad the all inclusive is capped out but family membership including the driving range is only 95a month which is insane up north it's easily 250 to 300 a month. Nice course I will be playing a lot.i will say as a member I am disappointed that they do not enforce rules and golf etiquette. They also don't have water every few holes which every other single course provides for it's customers. They have the stand for coolers to get water but no water at All. It gets hot in South Carolina it would be nice to have water if needed. Also there are spots on the fairways and greens that need fixed. It would be nice to see grass instead of sand
It had been years since I played here. In fact I hadn’t played the course since the redesign. It is certainly challenging. The course is in great shape and the staff was very nice.
Fantastic older golf course for the area. I play here often. No complaints. Evan Miller is an excellent employee.
Mason was great to work with. We came in and he was able to fit us in really fast. Clubhouse was great.
They had just sanded the greens so the putting was difficult. The course is in good shape and I am impressed with the progress y'all have made. I will be back. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Hidden gem.
Charwood has seemed to turn a corner after they reduced their number of holes to 18, from 27. Their greens are heavily improved from what I remembered years ago, and their fairways are also on the up and up. It would be nice to see some of their larger dirt areas, become grass, but for the price, it's definitely fair.
Nice course and good bang for your buck. Pretty challenging as well. Will definitely plan to come back.
Five years ago I played Charwood and told myself "never again". Yesterday, 31 July 2021, my buddy made a tee time there so I went.
I was pleasantly surprised. Other than a few rough greens in the early holes, the course held it's own very well.
Returned 20 July 2022. Played 18 holes. This course is a good one. I play golf 3 to 5 times a week and won’t hesitate to return to “The Wood”. Recommend you give it a chance as well.
Returned 26 July 2022. Played the front twice (it’s a very busy day). No complaints about the slow play. Just a lot of golfers, which is a testimonial for the course. Course is definitely in good shape. I don’t recall a blemish in any green. Go, play the course. You’ll enjoy it.
Returned 18 August 2022. A definite course to play in the Columbia, SC area.
Course is in great condition right now abs rates are pretty good. Only bad thing is, past two times I’ve played here, I’ve waited 5 minutes between every shot. I played 9 holes by myself and it took me 2 hours and some change. Absolutely ridiculous how badly spaced out each time slot is.
Beautiful golf course this time of year. Great prices and course was still in really good shape for mid November!!!
We started playing here a little over a year ago and they have done SO much work on the course. We love playing here. Staff are always so great and super friendly. This is our go-to course for a weekend round.
Excellent staff. Very polite and friendly. Very Very fair price for 18 holes. Fairways are in excellent condition and so are the bunkers. The greens are good a few are a little rough but they are replacing them in July. All around experience was exceptional. Will ay at this course all the time from now on.
Pretty decent course. Great for beginners and good value. Great chipping practice and putting areas.
Update: only course with 5 minute gaps between Tee times, Disappointed with new management, no money was put into the actual course over the past year the course has actually gotten worse every time I’ve played. I’m a member and last time I played as single and my girlfriend rode I got charged 10$ for her to ride. Turning into a money grab, as soon as my years over I’ll never be back.
We play Charwood with relative frequency. The one question we cannot understand is why there are single tee markers on each tee. USGA rules require 2 markers on each tee box. Seems like a really easy fix.
This review is based purely on potential. The layout and new things they are doing with the waste areas on the back nine make this a course to look forward to playing in the summer. But, in the winter the greens had zero grass, you were literally putting on painted dirt. As you would imagine, the ball does not stop on dirt. At one point my buddy and I agreed to call every ball on a green a two putt. With improved greens, this could be a 4 or 5 star course but right now I wouldn't pay more than $25 for it and it is 3 stars.
Played with my two sons Thanksgiving weekend. While a bit crowded, we progressed on a consistent basis and found the course and greens to be in good shape and challenging. Interesting use of the sandy soil in this part of the state. Staff is friendly and accommodating, equipment was in good shape, and the value is notable. We will be back to visit again.
Only reason it's not five stars is because of the pace of play on the turn. A group had left the clubhouse and just jumped in front of myself and another group which really slowed things down on the back nine. Other than that, the course was great. The driving range, while simple, is great for its intended use. They also have a great little area to chip from, out of the sand and short cut, near the 1st hole tee box. Putting green was also nice. For the price, it was well worth it and I would definitely go back again.
Nice golf course. Greens were in fantastic shape.
Course has improved tremendously. Greens were in fantastic shape. The fairways were well groomed. The only thing Charwood needs to do now is have a mini grader dress the sand cart paths occasionally, and get rid of the broken asphalt cart paths.
My group of three retired Soldiers enjoyed our round. I am a person who appreciates customer service and the staff far exceeded my expectation. The pro shop staff were very professional and went out of their way to provide exceptional service. The course was in very good condition. The greens were excellent, in great shape. I would definitely recommend this course and will play again.
I play occasionally in the area and bounce between a few courses. Charwood is constantly in great condition and a great value for the area. If I played more regularly, I would be buying a membership.
I try to get out once a week. For the price, this club is a deal. Both greens and fairways are improving nicely. Thanks to the recent deluge of rain and aerated fairways it should be exceptional in the coming months. From time to time I have been stuck behind people playing very slowly, not the course's fault - just golfers not adhering to proper gold etiquette.
Great staff and the course drains better than any in the area. Par 5 number 4 hole, the front green is near impossible hahah. The greens are always in great shape. Cool stuff being done with the waste areas too. Give it a go if you haven't already. Thanks Charwood!
Charwood is now an 18 hole course instead of 27 holes. It was early in the season and the greens were light on grass which made them much faster than normal but they still rolled true. Staff was friendly and helpful. Price was very affordable including the bucket of balls I hit at the driving range. Snack bar served up chili dogs and had other hot option as well as cold cut sandwiches. Enjoyable golf outing.
You sort of get what you pay for. Extremely inconsistent greens with very little grass. Fairways are not ideal but are acceptable in spots. Local rules allow you to improve your lie if that says anything about what you can expect. Okay if you are looking for a cheap place to play.
Course is in great shape. I always enjoy playing at Charwood and have been driving from Orangeburg for over 20 years to play there. Charwood is my home course. However, some of the greens are so slick, due to lack of grass, that the ball will not stop on a downhill or sideways putt. Whoever places the holes puts them in the worst possible place (usually right where the downslope is at its highest) making it impossible to stop the ball unless you hole the putt. Your next putt is a 15 or 20 foot putt. It is like playing on a trick putt putt course.
Course was a nice challenge. Played pretty well considering all the rain from the day before. Since they've combined 2 of the 9s, it would be nice if they labeled the course (red, white, etc.) to make it easier to find holes on your GPS. For example, the back 9 is the entire red course and hole 6 on the front is the white course.
Great for 1 somes, are beginners. Hard to lose a ball, but still easy on and off. Very nice and great deals after 5pm. They do charge a little to much for greens fees for morning golf and I think the white 9 is off limits. Needs work.
My husband signed up for the Millennial Membership, and we were so impressed that a club resort would offer such a cool deal. We told all of our friends and recommended your club to everyone. There was some miscommunication in the contract that was brought to our attention after the first couple of months, but they resolved the issue. We have enjoyed playing on this course for over 20 years, and will continue to come here.
Greens are fabulous...best ever. Course has seen some landscaping designed to improve growth & playability. 1st time back in 6-8 months very impressed & fees are really good too👍 …
Lovely course, with well maintained and manicured greens. Felt very welcome in the family oriented atmosphere. Staff was very friendly and just made the whole golfing experience great! Can’t wait to go back.
Honestly this is the best deal for golf in the Midlands. I paid less than $30 for 18, cart and it was on the weekend! Course was well laid out and the staff was more than friendly. I will definitely be back!
Charwood has a friendly and helpul staff that makes a person feel welcome. The membership rates are sensational and they are constantly improving the golf course. The course is good for both those who like to walk and those who use a cart.
Course is in great shape, employees that work there are top notch - you won't pay an arm and a leg but you will enjoy yourself as well as the course. I've been playing this course for about 3 years now and this is the best I've ever seen it.
Played on Sinday, July 11, 2021. Greens have been replaced and are great. It was a very fun round. This is my new favorite course.
For $15(weekday afternoon rate) this track is the best deal in Columbia if you want something cheap, low traffic, but decent course. Course is not long by any means, but in decent shape albeit some of the greens have some bare spots. The only real complaint I may have is their limited ball selection in the pro shop.(Hint, please offer some of the more popular balls like Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x). The staff is very friendly with a down home feel to it.
I like golf. You like golf. Charwood is suitable for great golf. Hit the golf ball. Find your ball. Hit it again. It is more fun than painting.
Plus, it's a really great course.
Really impresssed with the conditions of the course. Dealing with last winter and the harsh weather Charwood has recovered better than most due to the pride and hard work put in by the staff. Those who think this is the old Charwood are mistaken and should go play and decide for yourself. Great Staff, super value and exciting to see improvements on a daily basis.
Not the best golf course around but a lot of fun
I love Charwood. It's in good shape, it's friendly to golfers of all levels, it's very affordable and everyone treats you nice. Plus, Ryan in the golf shop is very nice and they have great hotdogs. I really enjoy playing at Charwood.
Had a great time at charwood. Greens were great staff was awesome. We had a break in between the first 9 and back 9 so we got some food from the grill and it was great as well. I will definitely be returning to play some more.
Had a pleasant experience, great customer service, great rates, loved the courses well maintained, quick Tee booking. Will definitely be back.
The course is in good shape considering the time of year. The entire staff, including the grill are all friendly. We will keep Charwood on our play rotation.
CGC is much improved since the last time I played there, which was about 2 years ago. Fairways and greens are in good shape. Pace of play was good. I will definitely play there again!
Greens are some of the best in area. Need to remind players to repair divots. Like the way your heading with the landscaping. Always a pleasure dealing with the staff. Keep up the good work.
My group plays early on Thursdays and it is always a pleasure to check in with Ms. Amanda- always helpful, smiling, pleasant ,professional and efficient !!! She and the other folks who help us "check in" are always pleasant!!! Thanks. We love playing Charwood!
I played on Friday after a few week off and found everything fine as always. I enjoyed my hot dog and drink from Phil's grill during 9 hole break. I'd drive a few extra miles for a snack from the grill.
I also played this Tuesday, 27 Feb., and witnessed Ryan do a great job of
starting a large number of golfers one after the other and don't remember anyone complaining. Rock and his gang has done a good job on the course after the cold days we had this winter.
Keep up the good work I will, as long as the LORD sees fit. continue to hit the ball down Charwoods fairways, and sometimes more than often in the woods.
fairways
First time here. Course starts out flat but adds hills later. Greens small but in good condition, some fairways thin. Good value, friendly staff. I'll be back
Really enjoyed my experience at charwood golf course. From the staff, fairways, all the way to the greens. Course is looking great and would 10/10 recommend to my friends!!
Golf course is in really good shape right now. The greens especially!Played one of my best rounds as a result! Thank you!
Friendly staff at Charwood. The fairways were nice and the greens are coming back. I played both Saturday and Sunday and really enjoyed the course. I will be back often.
Great course with excellent greens! Also very affordable especially with their twiligiht special or $20 after 2:30. The staff is also very friendly and makes you feel at home.
Great rates and overall a fun round of golf with nice greens. Some fairways are all sand but most are open and a fairly open course.
Course is in great shape. I have not played there in about 5 years, and the changes they have made are beautiful. I love the new look.
We enjoyed playing at Charwood yesterday. The staff is always so pleasant and the course looked good. I will be back!
I love coming here, very enjoyable course. The course is in great shape and atmosphere is very laid back. Music on the range and practice areas is a plus too!
Great day of golf with family and friends. Staff was extremely helpful, chicken salad sandwich was very tasty and the course if in good shape.
Great course, tee boxes for every level of golfer. Best value in the midlands, complimented by an extremely friendly staff!
Love the layout. Greens are improved and still improving, I love playing here. Great course for the price.
Fun layout on this course. They really care about the golfers here. Fun place to catch around and you can tell they appreciate you playing there.
Excellent course for the cost. $20 with a cart twilight rate. Not the most challenging track but great quality for the price.
Staff was great! As well as the prices! Great course for beginners took father and brother who never play they enjoyed themselves.
Front 9 greens were more sand than green. Back nine was in pretty good shape. Course is old and feels tired.
Awesome layout and challenging! Difficult to lose a ball with this course. Great price! Can't wait for my next Round.
My first time playing the course. Tee markers were difficult to locate. Apparently course was being repaired. Dirt piles in the fairways.
Under some construction, needs a little grass & asphalt. The course has been upgraded very nicely over the past 5 years. Thanks!
Decent golf course. The greens were not in the best of shape and there is not much in the way of cart paths, but it was still a good time.
The course is great. They have made a lot of improvements and continue to make more as time goes on. Best value for my money.
Husband loves it. People very nice.
We had a Gf8 time , well treated , enjoyed the course , challenging, nice staff.
Course is in good shape. Greens are nice. Definitely becoming a great course to play.
They went through a rough patch with the greens. Things are getting better now. Staff is always good.
Great course I had my first hole in one on hole Number 3 on Aug.2 2020 will be back.
The course is really coming around. Some of the best greens in the state. Fun to play. nice people.
Several of the greens were in need of repair, sandy, bumpy. Fairways in decent condition. Back nine in better condition than front nine.
Went with a large group. The course isnt bad, but you need 4 wheel drive to cart around.
They were aerating the fairways while we were there which made it difficult. The holes that weren't being aerated were in pretty good shape.
The course is in really nice shape. Make sure to try one of their cheeseburgers after your round.
Greens are tougher to putt than they look. Good course overall
Staff was the biggest plus above all here. Lady at the Pro shop gave excellent Service! As well as Chris in the diner. Thank You!
Golf there all the time love the course and the staff. Very laid back and enjoyable course.
First time playing there they welcome me with open arms
THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO PLAY THE GREENS ARE GOOD AS ANY IN TOWN A LOT OF OLD GUYS PLAY A LITTLE SLOW BUT THIS IS A BETTER COURSE IN THE COLUMBIA AREA.
Very nice greens, friendly staff, affordable 😁😁 …
👍 If looking at course value this is it. Greens are very good and improving. Recommended to go and play. …
Great golf course with a great staff. Would recommend going and enjoying the golf and grill.
Greens are in great shape. They are adding topsoil to many fairway.
Best public golf course in Columbia, SC. Affordable rates and friendly staff.
Good challenge without being too difficult. The food in the clubhouse was yummy too!
Like the course. The greens need some attention right now but not too bad for this time of the year.
Wonderful round of golf
Since Charwood has become an 18-hole course, the improvements are abundantly noticeable.
Course was completely full. Didn't get to play. This is a good thing!!!
This course is well kept up and maintenance. Staff doing a jam up.job
