Reviews of RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley
David Theoret
Birmingham Alabama has a lot of options for golfers, both residents, and visitors. There are nearly 40 public, private and municipal courses within a 20-mile radius of downtown Birmingham, including the infamous Shoal Creek Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus which has hosted a couple of PGA Championships, as well as several courses accessible to the public. Arguably, none are as fine as Ross Bridge and the two championship courses at Oxmoor Valley.
Ross Bridge and Oxmoor Valley are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the largest golf course construction project ever attempted. The trail was the brainchild of Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama whose “build it and they will come” mentality paid off.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to play several of the RTJ Trail courses and ultimately my goal is to play them all. I found The Ridge Course at Oxmoor Valley to be a lot more of a challenge than I thought it would be, mainly because all of the greens were extremely elevated. The starter told us that if your range finder tells you to hit a 7-iron, it’s probably a good idea to hit a 6! After my approach shot into the first green came up a little short, I too was a believer!
Oxmoor Valley offers 54 holes of golf with two championship courses (Ridge and Valley) and a Short Course. It’s built on mining land that was once owned by U.S. Steel and the holes are sculpted from the peaks and valleys that make up the Appalachian Mountains. As you play your way around the courses, you’ll encounter over 200 feet of elevation changes, scenic forests, and several creeks that you may or may not know are there.
The Ridge Course features roller coaster-like fairways, lots of tree-lined holes, elevated greens, and over 200 feet of elevation changes. Uneven lies are the norm out here. It’s one of the most photographed courses on the entire RTJ Trail and boasts some of the most thrilling par 5s in the state. Case in point, the Par 5 3rd hole, which is considered by many to be the course’s signature hole. It’s the second of back-to-back par 5s, and it’s best to put the last hole out of your mind before teeing off! Number 3 plays 506 yards from the White Tees and is handicapped the hardest hole on the outward side. There’s water between the tee and green but it probably won’t come into play until your second shot. Tee off from an elevated tee box and favor the right side of the fairway. Do the same thing with your layup shot but by all means, keep it in the fairway. That will leave an uphill approach shot into a green with an outcropping of rock. Be warned that the green is not as deep as it looks.
Eighteen is an impressive par 5 and is ranked the hardest hole on the golf course. At 543 yards from the White tees, not many players will reach it in two. If they do, they should probably have been playing from the longer tees! Your aiming point is the chimney on the clubhouse. As is often the case on the Ridge course, there are steep drop-offs from the edge of the fairway. Playing your layup shot right of the 150-yard marker will give the best angle into the green which is protected front and right by bunkers.
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail offers some incredible Stay & Play packages. The Renaissance Ross Bridge offers golfers the chance to relax in the style and comfort associated with the Renaissance Hotel group. Each room and suite is equipped with elegant furnishings, luxurious bedding, and a private balcony that offers astonishing views of Alabama’s hilly countryside. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, dinner, or something in between, you have several dining venues on the property to choose from including Brock's, The Clubhouse Restaurant, and JT's Lounge. Other hotel amenities include a 24-hour fitness center and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. There is also a full-service spa to help you rejuvenate after tackling those monster links.

This course was absolutely in great shape. Nice course to play for all skill levels. We were a 4-some that played 18 holes in 4 hours teeing off at 7am. It was very hit and the course ranger brought around cold wet towels, which was very nice. $106.00 for 18 holes/cart. Will play again when back in the area to visit my son, who lives very close by.
Marc Hernandez
Staff is very friendly and both courses have beautiful and challenging elevation changes. Short course is fun too. The scenery is really beautiful. Greens could be a little better, but might’ve just been due to the timing of my visit.
Ryan VanSickle
I've played both courses here several times. Currently the conditions are not great. Greens are long, fringes are overcome with thick and tall grass, fairways not cut, etc. Much better value at other courses around the city.
Jamie Stahler
Beautiful golf club. They have two courses here to choose from. Normal pricing for 18 with a cart is around $70-80 but you can get twighlight rates toward the end of the day in the $20-30 range. The greens are large, forgiving and well maintained. The staff is friendly and the club is simple but classy. One of the guys on staff driving around stopped to give me a cold towel and a glass of icewater which was a nice touch. I plan to return. Great experience.
Cory Windorff
The course was unbelievably beautiful, but the yardages were tough to play and all the greens are elevated or crowned. There must have been a heavy rain recently because a lot of the ground was squishy and soft. Played the ridge course, glad to check out valley.
Matt Bein
Very good course, fairways were in very good condition. There needs to be signals on holes longer than the eye can see to point towards advancement. Several times we needed to drive ahead for clarity of playing. The tee times are rough, partnered with a couple of new players was stressful and we had to break away from he group. Altogether a great place, no so great price for the course for a busy weekend of play. However it is a very nice course.
neil bailey
Great the whole way through if you're a golf nut like I am. Played in December and from orange it's long because there is no roll. Anyone complaining isn't someone I'd play with. I'll be back soon.
Emelle Ramzee
We had a great round of golf. The day was beautiful. The fairways were in great shape. The greens were fast. Of course, I've never heard anyone say RTJ greens are easy!
UPDATE: I hate to lower my rating, but I'm sure RTJ can quickly remedy my first two issues.
(1) Beverage cart personnel shouldn't be allowed to smoke (and maybe they aren't) while working and interacting with golfers on the course.
(2) Water coolers run dry on hot days. They are aware this happens. Offering cold towels on the course is nice, but not an adequate solution.
(3) The golf carts are usually very clean and well-maintained. They have a USB port, but no GPS. :(
On the positive side, the Trail Card is great bargain!
Stephen Early
Really great course. The clubhouse staff is super friendly. The food is also pretty good as well. The course is always in great condition as well. Even the par 3, which at a lot of golf courses is not kept up as well as the full length course, is super nice here. The driving range is always in great condition as well, and even has turf pads to use on days where the grass is too wet.
David Blair
Played both courses the Valley course has new greens that roll like a pool table alittle firm, in perfect shape
Bob Sellers
Just wow! What a layout and experience this golf course was when we played it. The views and elevations were outstanding combined with the course conditions.
Il-Gyu Cho
Beautiful course, very difficult. Probably best if you are an experienced golfer.
John-Paul Morgante
A nice layout and a friendly staff. I played in December and the course still played well.
Scott Katstra
Cool layout. Lots of elevation changes. Driver intensive course. Greens were slow, but they just aerated a little while ago. Rough was still dormant, so alot of brown grass. Greens are huge. Not sure its worth $105, but I'd play it again in the summer just to see it fully green.
Johnny Mills
Great time playing RTJ Golf Trail Oxymoor Valley Ridge & Valley courses. The courses are in excellent shape & the service is top notch.
Billy Focia
Fun time. Course is very good. Anticipate about a 5 hrs round. Crowded most days
Gary Hosking
Great course to play at all levels. Weather was not best do we stopped after 9 and had a great lunch. Great service in value and facilities.
Michael Nurse
We played both course. They were shutting down the Valley course to replant the greens - nice track otherwise and will be better with the new greens. Ridge course is very challenging as every shot is on an angle seemingly. Picturesque and worth the play. Nice clubhouse/pro shop and staff was very pleasant and welcoming.
Charles Jones
A little wet from previous night's rains, but greens were still firm and fast. Great practice round for my tournament this weekend.
gary pasko
The course and facilities were outstanding. The Lakes Course (Links closed for renovation) was one of the top courses I played on the RTJ Trail. All the staff were very friendly and lunch at the club house pretty good, although I've had better. Definitely a course to play.
James Moak
We played the Valley Course and it's in great shape. Ate lunch at the bar inside and the food was good as well.
Chris shattuck
Amazing course! Tough of course. Tight..but oh so fun. A must play! Yes thats my birdie on the 150 yard backside par3.
Neal Fondren
I love this place. Many like the Ridge, but, personally-I prefer the Valley. I can't wait to play it when it reopens. Don't discount the Short Course. But be warned. This ain' no pitch n putt. It's legit. Staff is always great. Kid named Mason went out of his way to accommodate. Took me back to the car, which was a good thing, since I'd just showered and it was pretty hot that day. They need to replicate Mason.
Jack steiner
Nice courses. The par 3 course is top notch. You spend the extra money and play Ross bridge.
Eric Wilks
We traveled from out of state, in early April, just to get on the RTJ Trail. Even before we left, I had some question for the pro shop and they were extremely helpful. Then we got there an hour before our tee time, and they were, again, great. The carts have USB chargers, so if you use an app on your phone for distance, you won't run out of juice on the course (make sure to pack your own cord).
The Ridge is a beautiful course that winds through woods. There are only houses a couple of the holes, so it is a peaceful place to play. The course is challenging, but not punishing even if you don't hit the fairway. There was a big storm the night before, so the greens were a little slow (a couple in our foursome played the par 3 before the rain and they were running very fast). I can't wait to get back.
The only thing that wasn't great was the driving range. It wasn't level. However, since it's early season I won't ding them for that.
Jim Palkovic
Not up to RTJ Standards on the Ridge course. Played Ross Bridge day before and it was a 5 out of 5. Recommend you try Valley or go elsewhere.
Shawn Rees
WOW what a course! This was my first time playing an RTJ COURSE and it was definitely an experience! Beautiful scenery and prestige course layout...
david stocks
Excellent facilities beautiful piece of land, can't wait to visit again during golf season.
Ronnie Lynn
Awesome golf course. Two 18 holes courses, The Ridge and Valley. They have an 18 hole par 3 course as well. All 3 are in great condition, greens and fairways. The driving range is always in great condition as well. Friendly staff and food is great also. Been playing here for years and will continue to be back 🏌️♂️ …
suntaree wainwright
This is my family home course. We always have great experience here. Everybody who works there is friendly, helpful, and professional. Also, golf academy is great. It offers junior and adult classes all year round. My golf game improves after taking lessons from the Academy.
tom pruitt
I can tell you.... My game was horrible, the course was in ok shape(weather) , and it was a great day to be with my brothers.
But the best part of our day was the professionalism and patience of the marshalls. They had so much to overcome. A couple of rain delays, golfers who wanted to do what THEY wanted to do rather than follow the safety precautions, and the marshalls kept their calm in spite of the obstacles. Even the cart ambassadors did good to keep the outside area organized.
I was impressed with the leadership and hospitality. Thank you!
Rod P
Definitely a nice golf course, hilly and very challenging. Nice views almost seems like you're playing a mountain course and was a lot of fun. The only thing that sucked was having to pay for range balls after the money I'd spent to pay to play, I expect that out of a $30 round public course. Cart attendants very professional but the dude in the golf shop who checked us in needs to leave the ego at the door he wasn't too receptive.
John Brand
This is an excellent golf facility with 36 holes and a 18 short course. I didn't get to play the short course but the ridge course was excellent. Ive never seen a place that has both bent grass greens and bermuda greens. The valley course was not as good in my opinion but maybe that was because they had punched the greens about two week prior and they were not in prime condition. However I would recommend both these courses to anyone.
Kevin Bogenreif
Nice staff, but course is “tired” and you can tell the money is being spent elsewhere on RTJ. Clubhouse bathroom and lockers were very tired and frankly dirty. No towels or soap in bathroom. Would rank this lowest of the RTJ courses and facilities, really cool layout though and with TLC and some capital improvements would be a really great spot! Go down the road to Ross Bridge instead
Andy Weninger
Very challenging course. A lot of up and down. I played after rain and had to keep to the cart path which involved alot of walking, so be prepared.
Chris Mc
$104 to play this past Saturday. I love the place but it is not $104 value. This was without a trail card or getting a trail card as part of the price. Was told the card could only be used on weekdays so 3 of our 4 did not buy one. First time I've ever heard this.
Greens are in very good condition. The fairways are good. A few tee boxes were dead. I'll be back as I have played there for years, but 3 new guys came with me. They will not be back for that price/condition
Cherita King
Beautiful, well maintained courses. Friendly staff.
Rab Stewart
Taking lessons from Thompson golf academy is a great experience . The instructors are professional and helpful. It’s very laid back. They improved my game tremendously and did it quickly.
Jacob Lewis
Great course. The best fairways I have seen this Spring. Greens had nice bent grass and rolled smoothly. Tee boxes well manicured. The course is very hilly and many times you will have odd lies in the fairway. Very picturesque course. Driving range is big and pretty. For the price of $90, I will give it 4 star but easily could be 5 star.
Mike Converse
Liked layout of courses but disappointed that they were in process of killing the greens to redo them on one course and didn't let us know to possibly switch location. The pro or whomever we talked to after was cool to give us credit for the round that we were able to use in pro shop.
Donald Walton
I played the Ridge at 0700 today Friday 10/23/20. The course was in great shape. The workers were very friendly and respectful. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Jim Thompson
Great golf. Really like the driving range. Buy a trail card. Great discount. Pays for itself pretty quickly. The PAR 3 is awesome. Good place to work on your short game.
Rhett Fast
Really enjoyed the Valley course. Traveled from out of town just to play this and Ross Bridge. Truthfully, this course was in much better condition than Ross Bridge when we visited the first of October. A lot less worn out. There’s two holes where it’s high elevation changes, but otherwise it’s flat and in the valley. Kind of forgettable layout, but still a lot of fun for the money.
Mike Aurilio
I have really enjoyed playing all of the courses here, they are in great shape any time of year. Between the 2 full courses, the par 3 short course and practice areas, you can easily find time to play and practice or both! The staff is beyond friendly, very knowledgeable and always helpful.
Ben White
Very challenging courses. We played the Ridge. Despite the heat, the Bentgrass greens were true and rolling well. The Valley Course has Bermuda greens. Also an 18 hole short course (par 3's). Staff was friendly, lots of water (to drink) on course. Beverage carts were also running continuously.
AJ Bouie II
Excellent course, along with a great staff! We'll definitely return again.
F&K Finch
Wonderful courses and very professional and helpful staff.
Lisa Getts-Folsom
Nice facility. Good food.
David Crutcher
We had just enough time to play the "short" course, an 18 hole executive. Greens in great shape, but very undulating and fast, you will have some there putts. Highly recommend, it was great fun.
golfump
Very nice course that is part of the trail. One of the few semi-private/public courses in Birmingham. 36 regular holes with18 hole short course (par 3)that is one of the best around. Only negative would be the valley course (18 long course) Does not come back to the club house after the 9th.
Olivia Affuso
Cool spot especially if you are into golf! If not, nice bar with craft beer awaits you.
dan09031
We played course today paid $$$$ which was to munch based on all the courses we have played, pace of play was slow, some greens had issues. Playing muscle shoals and than this course big difference.. But overall was fun to play...
Ralph Anderson
Nice golf course. But, the facilities are a bit run down. Staff were very nice and attentive. Good experience. Course is about be closed for a needed revamp.
Russ Bartlett
Ridge course: The layout had a lot of elevation change and was scenic. Fun course to play.
Adam S.
My friend and I came in from out of town and played 54 holes in two days. This place is amazing! Some very challenging holes and beautiful views. All the staff was extremely helpful and polite.
Noah Taylor
Played the Valley course for the twilight rate of 33 bucks with a cart. Course is in excellent condition and is a fun, challenging, and fair layout. Will definitely be back to try the Ridge course.
Alice Iten
We played the Ridge course. Lots of elevation changes. Not an easy course but great lay out.
Mario Artecona
Valley course was in pristine conditions. Fast and true greens. Very friendly and attentive staff. Great time. Gorgeous setting. Great value.
Randy Wilkerson
Played in April 2014. Greens were in great shape; bunkers a little rough due to heavy rains a day or two before. Love to play this course as long as it's not cart path only.
Dan Konietzko
We played the valley course. It's in fantastic shape. The greens are quick. It's a little pricey. But that might be because I am spoiled by Florida prices.
Suzanne Lenaerts (Where2Golf)
Here at Oxmoor Valley on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, 36-holes of sumptuous championship golf await. The Valley, rated 4-1/2 stars, is an out-and-back layout that starts with a plunging descent down to the Shannon valley floor, via an excellent, slightly dog-legging par-4 and a fiercely bunkered par-3. With not a stick of real estate in sight, the Valley course offers a great opportunity to immerse yourself in a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging layout, while journeying through this pleasantly wooded, creekside setting. The 18th brings you back to the clubhouse, with some picturesque views onto neighbouring woods and hills.
Willie D
This a very beautiful course, challenging and convenient to the city. I would love to be able to play it everyday. The greens were smooth and fast at least 11 on the stempmeter.
Jordan Boston
Great experience last weekend, so we’re coming back for more. Braden was a big help getting our tee times set up. Looking forward to it again!
David Davenport
Beautiful
Jim Nardecchia
Great venue...excellent golf courses and golf staff!
Valentino pinckney
Very good Service. Course in great shape. Greens fast , tricky. but fair. Love the course.
MaryAnn Blair (Elegant Lady Sewing)
If the greens had been in better shape it would have been 5 star. They had some vandalism on the greens with a 4 wheeler & irresponsible young man this spring. More than unfortunate, criminal.
John Walling
Superb service, beautifully maintained courses , with such friendly people everywhere.. great price too !!
john placey
Nice golf courses 2, 18 hole and 1, 18 hole par 3, nice driving range part of the Robert Trent Jones golf trail ⛳️
Rory Williams
Great course- greets are a little fast, but beautiful and amazing staff.
Joshua Johnsey
Courses are a great value. Although the Ridge plays too much on side hill lies.... but the online reservation tool is a very lackluster and errors out to frequently.....
Mike Nash
I've played all the RTJ courses. Ross Bridge was definitely the best. Views are spectacular. Course was in great shape. I'll definitely go back.
Jeremy Blalock
Great course...you better know how to handle ROCK hard greens.

New greens on the Valley course are hard and fast but in very good shape.
Tolly Walker
Great golf courses, tee's, fairways, and greens are in great shape, not to mention the great staff, It was a joy to play there.

Brian Janis
Got a great deal on golf and a room for the weekend. This place is beautiful and then some. A little pricey on some items, but this aint no Holiday inn Express.

Jason Norris
Played Ridge course: Nice layout in good shape
Tony Young
Great golf course but water on the carts would be nice since it is so hot.
Tray Rasco
Bent grass and perfectly manicured. The ridge is arguably the most difficult course I have played. You will want to bring extra balls and your A game.
Pete Horton
Challenging course with great views, the "trail"'is one of Alabama's unique assets (another is Barber Motorsports) that are mostly known by enthusiasts and missed by many.
Jerry Boatman
Great course, though greens recently aerated (normal maint.) Wise to have an RTJ Trail Card.
John Amosa
Awesome courses, beautiful weather and perfect place to play golf
Scott Steinbach
Fun layout with some challenging holes. The clubhouse is magnificent! Food and beverage was pretty slow though.
Jeremy Schultz
Been coming here since 2005. Great course(s) on one of my favorite RTJ Trail stops.
Derek Weaver
Played the par 3 course. It is challenging and extremely well kept! Had a great time!

Nice course but way over priced for what it is. There are nicer courses in the Bham area that I would choose over this one that are priced better.
